Abstract:BACKGROUND:The number of global hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) survivors is increasing rapidly. Survivors encounter many challenges, but studies regarding survivorship experiences in China are scarce.OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to explore the survivorship experiences of Chinese patients with hematological cancers after HSCT and to describe the impact of HSCT on the survivors' lives.METHODS:Descriptive qualitative research was used. Purposive sampling was used to recruit HSCT survivors who were treated in a teaching hospital in Zhejiang Province from June 2021 to June 2022. Audio-recorded semistructured interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed via conventional content analysis.RESULTS:Fifteen HSCT survivors aged 18 to 59 years participated in this study. Four themes and 11 subthemes emerged: (1) transplant being harder than you thought (body function impaired, forced to modify diet, disturbed by survivorship uncertainty), (2) difficulty blending into circles (limited activity space, suffering from discrimination), (3) adjusting value judgment (health being a top priority, contributing to family as much as possible, feeling worthless), and (4) still being the lucky one (recovered better than others, genuine relationships acquired, self-improvement achieved).CONCLUSION:This study offers insight into subjective survivorship experiences of patients with hematological cancers post-HSCT within a Chinese sociocultural context and presents changed perceptions of HSCT, life alterations, adjusted value judgments, and positive self-evaluation since treatment.IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE:Nurses can provide person-centered survivorship care based on the understanding of survivorship experiences of Chinese HSCT survivors. Intervention programs and informational materials should be developed to address difficulties encountered by Chinese HSCT survivors.

Abstract:Objectives: Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) profoundly impacts the physical, psychological, and social aspects of parents' lives. Thus, this study aimed to explore the experiences of parents living with a child with cancer who undergoes HSCT. Methods: This qualitative study involved 20 parents of children with cancer who were undergoing HSCT at a referral hospital in Iran. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants from February 2023 to November 2023. In-depth semi-structured interviews, featuring open-ended questions, were utilized for data collection. Data analysis was performed using conventional content analysis. Results: Data analysis revealed two main themes. "Surrounded by hardships" and "Self-actualization." The first theme encompassed participants' experiences of facing difficulties in life after being aware of their child's need for HSCT. This theme consisted of four categories: "uncertainty about the child's future," "exhaustion from the child's treatment process," "worrying about the healthy child(ren)," and "helplessness." The second theme "self-actualization" included with two categories: "transformation in life's philosophy" and "acquisition of new capabilities." These categories highlighted the positive outcomes experienced by the participants following their child's HSCT. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the importance of healthcare providers being attuned to parents' experiences throughout their child's HSCT trajectory. It is crucial for healthcare providers to encourage parents to articulate their concerns and feelings and seek support from healthcare providers, family, and friends. The development of psychological support services in healthcare settings can facilitate tailored interventions to alleviate parents' difficulties.

Parents' experiences of donation to their child before kidney transplantation: A qualitative study

Abstract:Aim and objectives: To explore parents' experiences of donation to their child before kidney transplantation. Background: Transplantation is the treatment of choice for paediatric patients with end-stage renal disease. Living donor kidney transplantation has shown a higher long-term transplant survival compared to deceased donor transplantation and entails a more controllable process, with shorter waiting time. Besides complex care and treatment of their child, parents must reflect on the prospects of being a donor for their child. However, little is known about the parent donor and parent caregiver perspective. Design: A qualitative exploratory study taking a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Method: The study was conducted in a Danish university hospital. Interviews were conducted with the parents of seven children, aged between 5-15 years, with end-stage renal disease in the period before kidney transplantation. Data were analysed with inspiration from Ricoeur's theory of interpretation on three levels: naïve reading, structural analysis and critical interpretation and discussion. Results: The decision about donation was experienced as a matter of course and commitment. There were preferences for a kidney from a living donor, including the hope of being accepted as a donor. Being refused as a donor revealed feelings of powerlessness. However, transformation was performed into having a new role providing care and comfort to the child during the transplant process. Asking family and friends about donation could feel like crossing a line. Conclusion: The prospect of donating to one's child had an impact on the well-being of the entire family. Parents were in a vulnerable situation and in need of support, regarding both living and deceased donation. Waiting time included hopeful thoughts and reflections on a new caregiver role for the child during transplantation. Relevance to clinical practice: Health professionals' attention, engagement and dialogue are essential in order to gain extensive and varied knowledge about the individual parent's experiences and the well-being of the entire family to provide care and support before, during and after the donation and transplantation process.

Abstract:p73, a recently identified gene, maps to chromosome region 1p36.3, which is frequently deleted in a variety of solid tumors. Although the gene shares sequence and functional homologies with p53, its suppressor function has not been proven. We investigated for the first time the genetic and expression status of the p73 gene and analyzed its flanking microsatellite loci on chromosome 1p36.3 in 67 primary oral and laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas to determine their association with these tumors. Our results reveal two missense mutations at codons 469 and 477 and a silent mutation at codon 349 in the C-terminal domain. Site-directed mutagenesis of p73 cDNA with these mutations and a p21 transactivation assay failed to show any significant functional consequences of these mutations. Microsatellite analysis of the flanking loci of p73 in region 1p36 showed overall alterations (loss of heterozygosity and instability) frequency of 39%, 16% at the proximal marker and 46% at the distal markers. Of the 21 cases for which we did protein expression analyses, 11 tumors had a >2-fold variation compared with matching histologically normal mucosa. Our study shows that: (i) intragenic alterations in this gene are rare and lack functional significance; (ii) its variable expression argues against a tumor suppressor function; (iii) this gene plays a minor role in head and neck squamous carcinoma; (iv) a distal site to this gene on 1p36 may harbor another suppressor gene.
Mothers' responses during the child's stem cell transplantation: pilot study

Abstract:Purpose: Examine the relationships between the mothers' anxiety and depressive symptomatology and resources (problem-solving orientation and style, coping, and social support) during their child's stem cell transplantation (SCT). Method: A prospective correlation design was used. A convenience sample of 23 mothers completed State-Anxiety Inventory, Center of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised, and Stress Support Scale at the child's admission and 10 days after the stem cells infusion. Findings: Significant relationships were found between mothers' negative problem-solving orientation and emotional responses, coping and depressive symptomatology, and between social support and emotional responses but in an inverse direction. Conclusion: Health care professionals need to increase their understanding of mothers' stress responses during the SCT. These responses may affect the mother/child interactions and the mother's ability to provide childcare. A psychosocial intervention that includes these resources may assist the mothers during their child's SCT.

The dual role - as both parent and medical caregiver - gives rise to fatigue, stress, and emotional pain. Parental and family functioning are critically important to a child's disease course, development and well-being. Objective: To explore the experiences and perspectives of mothers and fathers of children with a kidney transplant. Design: An explorative study using a qualitative method. Participants: Twelve parents (seven mothers and five fathers) of seven children with a kidney transplant. Approach: A qualitative exploratory study taking a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Method: Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted. The data were analysed using Ricoeur's theory of narrative and interpretation on three levels: naïve reading, structural analysis, and critical interpretation and discussion. Findings: Four themes were generated: Kidney transplantation as a turning point, the importance of a close collaboration with health care professionals, being the child's voice, and managing the dual role as a parent, and medical caregiver in everyday life. Conclusion: Child kidney transplantation led to a transformation in the child, on the physical, mental, and social levels; however, the child was still in need of special attention and support. Problems with the kidney graft functioning resulted in frustration and disappointment in parents. Teamwork between a child's parents became evident, in coping with the dual role as a parent and medical caregiver. Parents aimed to maintain a clear structure related to medication and disease-related treatment. A close and trustful relationship and collaboration with health care professionals were significant and included listening to the voice of the child.

There are, however, still a number of challenges in addition to the parental role. The magnitude of intensive parental caregiving and support required by children with a kidney transplant could be disruptive to family relationships and dynamics. Objective: To explore the experiences of family relationships and dynamics among parents of a child with a kidney transplant. Design: An explorative study using a qualitative method. Participants: Twelve parents (seven mothers and five fathers) of seven children with a kidney transplant were included. Approach: A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was applied. Method: Semistructured, individual interviews were conducted. The data were analysed using Ricoeur's theory of interpretation on three levels: naïve reading, structural analysis and critical interpretation and discussion. Findings: Three themes were generated: Emotions during ups and downs in everyday life; Balancing different needs among children; and Opportunities and having consideration in the family. Conclusion: Relationships between parents that are based on mutual emotional support are significant and essential during periods of severe illness in a child. Parents who are alone or emotionally marked by their child's disease history feel vulnerable and struggle to overcome challenges. Different health situations among siblings lead to challenges in bringing up the children and emotional dilemmas among parents that impact family dynamics. Resilience in parents is a shifting phenomenon that can influence how they deal with family relationships and dynamics.
Parental experiences and coping strategies when caring for a child receiving paediatric palliative care: a qualitative study

Abstract:Parenting and providing extensive care to a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening disease while being aware of the future loss of the child are among the most stressful parental experiences. Due to technical and medical improvements, children are living longer and are increasingly cared for at home. To align healthcare professionals' support with the needs of parents, a clear understanding of prominent experiences and main coping strategies of parents caring for a child in need of palliative care is needed. An interpretative qualitative study using thematic analysis was performed. Single or repeated interviews were undertaken with 42 parents of 24 children with malignant or non-malignant diseases receiving palliative care. Prominent reported parental experiences were daily anxiety of child loss, confrontation with loss and related grief, ambiguity towards uncertainty, preservation of a meaningful relationship with their child, tension regarding end-of-life decisions and engagement with professionals. Four closely related coping strategies were identified: suppressing emotions by keeping the loss of their child at bay, seeking support, taking control to arrange optimal childcare and adapting to and accepting the ongoing change(s).Conclusion: Parents need healthcare professionals who understand and carefully handle their worries, losses, parent-child relationship and coping strategies. What is Known: • In paediatric palliative care, parents have a daunting task in fulfilling all caregiving tasks while striving for control of their child's symptoms, a life worth living and a family balance. What is New: • Prominent experiences were: continuous management of anxiety of child loss, feelings of uncertainty, tension with end-of-life decision making and engagement with professionals. Parents experienced unique significance to their child, reinforcing a meaningful parent-child relationship. • Relevant coping strategies were: suppressing emotions, seeking support, taking control to arrange optimal care and adapting to the ongoing changes. • To provide tailored support, professionals need to understand parents' perceptions, relationship with their child and coping strategies.

Abstract:Neutral endopeptidase (neprilysin; EC 3.4.24.11) is present in the brush border membrane, for example in the bile ducts. We investigated serum neprilysin activity and its correlation with cholestatic markers in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Sera of 39 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (37 females, 2 males, mean age 45 years, range 24-71 years) were investigated. Twenty-seven healthy volunteer subjects served as control. Serum neprilysin activity was measured by a sensitive microplate-based continuous monitoring kinetic assay. Succinyl-alanyl-alanyl-phenyl-alanyl-4- nitroanilide was used as substrate. For statistical analysis Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA by ranks and Mann-Whitney U test were used. The neprilysin activities were significantly higher in stages III (mean 13.2 +/- SD 10.8 U/l) and IV (21.8 +/- 17.5) than in the control subjects (2.4 +/- 2.9, p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in neprilysin activity between the patients with stages I and II, or between stage I + II (2.88 +/- 3.0) and the control. Positive correlation was found between the activity of neprilysin and serum bilirubin, alkaline-phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl-transferase (p < 0.005 for each). In this study we confirmed that serum neprilysin activity is elevated in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis at advanced stages and the elevation correlated with the cholestatic markers. The increased neprilysin activity seems to be an indicator for the severity and progression of the disease.
Hoping for a normal life: Decision-making on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation by patients with a hemoglobinopathy and their caregivers

Abstract:Background: To provide insight into the perspectives of children and young adults with transfusion-dependent thalassemia and sickle cell disease and their caregivers regarding the decision for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Procedure: A qualitative longitudinal multicenter study. Data collection consisted of 40 audio-recorded conversations between physicians and families and 77 interviews with patients and/or caregivers related to 27 unique cases, collected at different time points throughout the decision-making process. Results: Conversations and interviews revealed "hoping for a normal life" as an overarching theme, consisting of four main topics: (i) "Building a frame of reference" refers to a process where patients or families try to obtain comprehensive information on HSCT and translate this to their situation to decide. (ii) "Balancing between loss and benefit" reports the process of considering the advantages and disadvantages of continuing with supportive care to treat their disease versus choosing HSCT. (iii) "Experiencing the impact of HSCT" describes the impactfull experience of the HSCT period by those who chose HSCT. (iv) "Balancing again" refers to reflecting on the decision made. Conclusions: The hope for a normal life guided the decision-making process, described as a constant balance between the impact of the disease and HSCT. A structured approach to explore patients' and caregivers' perspectives on HSCT decision-making is needed, where specifically discussing the impact of the disease and hope for a normal life need to be integrated in the process.
Experiences of Parents and Solid Organ-transplanted Adolescents: A Qualitative Framework Analysis through Focus Groups. The TransplantKIDS Mental Health Project

Abstract:Background Solid organ transplantation is the optimal treatment for children and adolescents with end-stage organ failure. However, the biopsychosocial challenges faced jointly by the various types of solid organ recipients have received little attention from a multidimensional and qualitative approach in paediatric populations. This is the first study based on focus groups to identify the unmet care needs perceived by transplanted adolescents and parents throughout the pre-, peri-, and post-surgical phases of various types of solid organ transplantation. Methods Two focus groups were conducted with five adolescent transplant recipients and five parents, respectively, at the Children's Hospital of La Paz University Hospital in Spain. The focus groups followed a biopsychosocial theoretical framework and used a semi-structured moderating guide. Participants were asked open-ended questions about aspects of healthcare that they would have liked to change or improve, followed by specific questions about biomedical, psychological, and social aspects that were not spontaneously addressed. The sessions were conducted using a video call, audio-recorded, and automatically transcribed. Thematic framework analysis was used to examine the data, involving familiarisation, identifying a thematic framework, indexing, charting, mapping, and interpretating. Results The findings revealed several unmet care needs, highlighting the importance of addressing social and psychological aspects of care throughout the transplantation process. Key issues common to both informant groups were inconveniences regarding the distance to the hospital and long waiting times for outpatient hospital visits, as well as the importance of peer support, humanised interaction with healthcare personnel, and mental health care during the whole process. Conclusions These findings will inform the design of future multifaceted prehabilitation interventions to prepare patients and parents for solid organ transplantation. This study highlights the importance of understanding the experiences and unmet needs of adolescent transplant recipients and their families in order to improve healthcare delivery and clinical outcomes.

Comparison of Three Diagnostic Tests for Dirofilaria Immitis in a Low-Incidence Area

Abstract:was obtained, tests were repeated by a different technologist. Microfilaria identification using the alkaline phosphatase technique was done to differentiate between D. immitis and Dipetalonema reconditum on all samples in which microfilariae were observed. Clinical follow-up was obtained for 11 of the 12 dogs that had any positive test result by reviewing the medical record or discussing the case with the clinician. The results of the laboratory tests are summarized in Table 1. Samples from 1,347/1,359 dogs (99.12% of samples submitted) were negative for microfilariae and adult D. immitis antigen using both commercial kits. Microfilariae, subsequently identified as D. immitis, were observed in blood samples from 7 dogs. Four of these dogs also had adult D. immitis antigen detected by both kits. Two microfilaremic dogs were negative for D. immitis adult antigen with both kits. Blood from 1 dog that was positive for microfilariae was serologically positive for adult antigen with only 1 of the commercial kits. Five dogs were serologically positive for adult D. immitis antigen but negative for microfilariae. The 5 dogs that had positive tests for adult D. immitis antigen but negative filter tests were considered otherwise healthy. They had no evidence of circulatory or respiratory compromise. Adulticide treatment was recommended for each of these dogs, but owners chose to administer ivermectin or milbemycin oxime monthly to their pets. Owners were advised to observe their dogs carefully and to restrict their pets’ exercise for at least 2 days following the administration of the monthly heartworm preventative. Adverse reactions were not reported in any of these dogs. Six of the 7 dogs that tested positive for D. immitis microfilariae underwent treatment for the elimination of adult D. immitis and microfilariae, regardless of the results of the adult antigen test. Additional information could not be obtained for 1 dog that was positive on all 3 tests. Treatment in 1 dog that had positive results with all 3 tests was initiated as an emergency procedure when the dog developed acute respiratory distress. Two dogs that were microfilaremic were adult antigen negative using both kits, and 1 microfilaremic dog was antigen negative with 1 kit but antigen positive with the other. Such results are likely to occur if the adult worm burden is low. In these cases, the sensitivity of the tests for detection of adult antigen is decreased. 2,3,6,8,9 Based on physical examination and radiographs, the clinicians strongly suspected that 2 of these 3 dogs had few adult D. immitis in their right ventricles, and the dogs were treated with adulticides before beginning preventative therapy. The presence of adult D. immitis infection in the right ventricle in the third dog was questionable, yet the owner preferred to have the dog treated with adulticide before preventative therapy was begun. Abstract:Objective Reasons for patients' acceptance of the allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT) proposed and how their decision may be affected by the long distances involved have not been sufficiently investigated so far. We therefore conducted a qualitative study to identify the factors involved in overseas patients' decision to accept allo‐HSCT. Methods In‐depth semi‐directive interviews were conducted with overseas allo‐grafted patients (n = 22), as well as one non‐consenting patient and their caregivers (n = 24). Interviews were analyzed taking an inductive thematic approach. Results Respondents stated that their decision to undergo the transplantation was constrained by their feeling of being in a therapeutic impasse, the need for a survival strategy, the need to survive for their family's sake, family and doctors' pressures, and the feeling of being managed. The following factors favoring patients' acceptance were the medical information received, their faith, having a family donor, peer testimonies, and positive representations of the transplantation. Factors against patients' acceptance were geographical distance from home to the transplant center, apprehension of protective isolation, fear of dying, and representations of the graft. Conclusions These factors, such as patient's personal values and representations, need to be weighed up in order to adapt the information exchanged accordingly. Efforts are required to relieve patients' social isolation and improve the means of providing family support.

Transplantation of Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem Cells from Family Members Without in Vitro T-cell Depletion for Treatment of Hematologic Malignancies in Pediatric Patients

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of haploidentical (from family member donors) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for children with hematologic malignancies.METHODS:Fifty-eight children under fourteen years with hematological malignancies underwent haploidentical HSCT. All patients had poor-risk clinical or cytogenetic features and reclassified into high-risk and standard-risk groups. Transplantation outcomes were analyzed.RESULTS:Of fifty-eight patient/donor pairs, seven (12.1%) were mismatched in two HLA loci, twenty (34.5%) in three loci, and thirty-one (53.4%) in four loci. Follow-ups were performed for a median of 1,663 (752-2,664) days after transplantation. All patients achieved stable engraftments. The cumulative incidence of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) of grades 2-4 was (54.8+/-7.6)%, and that of grades 3-4 was (11.4+/-4.8)%. The cumulative incidence of chronic GVHD was (45.6+/-7.8)% for the total and (19.6+/-6.5)% for the extensive. Thirty-eight patients survived with a 2-year actual overall rate of survival 59.0% and 78.9% in the high-risk and standard-risk group, respectively. The 3-year probability of LFS was (58.6+/-8.0)% and (68.4+/-10.7)%, respectively.CONCLUSION:The results encourage extending haploidentical HSCT without T-cell depletion treatments to children with an indication for transplantation.

Abstract:Introduction Pediatric transplantation is an extremely complex and emotionally difficult area of pediatric medicine. The process of obtaining a pediatric donor by the staff is an extremely delicate topic, and for the family of the deceased child, often an unimaginable and painful process. The aim of the study was to analyze parents’ opinions on pediatric transplantology. Methods The research survey method was applied using an original survey questionnaire made available electronically using a Google form. The group analyzed included 203 respondents. Results The attitude towards making transplant decisions among the respondents was positive. Education, age of parents and number of children did not influence attitudes towards pediatric transplantology. Conclusions There is a need for social education in the field of pediatric transplantation and to facilitate access to professional psychological care for pediatric patients and/or their caregivers.

Abstract:Introduction and objective: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) is a promising treatment option for persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). Patients undergoing aHSCT face unique challenges in all aspects of life. In this study, we explored the lived experiences of pwMS undergoing aHSCT. Methods: Semi-structured interviews of 12 pwMS treated with aHSCT were conducted using a maximum variation sampling strategy. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically using inductive and deductive categories. Results: Three major themes were identified: (1) preparing for aHSCT, (2) experiencing the procedure, and (3) post-treatment time. A difficult decision-making process, organizational effort, and funding difficulties characterized the preparation for transplantation. AHSCT was seen as a life-changing event accompanied by both psychological and physical stress, with an associated feeling of regaining control. The transplantation had a lasting positive effect on the lives of the interviewed pwMS. However, the early post-treatment time was characterized by successes and failures alike. Particularly the independently organized medical aftercare was perceived as challenging. Retrospective revaluation has led most pwMS to wish for earlier information provision about the treatment option of aHSCT during their treatment history. Conclusion: AHSCT had a clear impact on patients' physical and psycho-social health, influencing their perception of life and its quality. Assessing and attending to unmet needs of patients before, during, and after transplantation may positively influence their experience of aHSCT.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) greatly impacts the social, emotional, and physical well-being of the patient and their family. The transplant process imposes significant lifestyle restrictions that result in patient and family isolation, which has been further amplified during the COVID-19 pandemic era. While hospital systems recognize the importance of family engagement, the pandemic underscored the need to translate this philosophy more fully into practice.METHOD: We discuss the importance of engaging the family throughout the transplant experience to improve patient outcomes and overall family health and well-being.RESULTS: We present the HCT family resilience model, a synthesis of multiple family and nursing theories and HCT concepts to better guide HCT family care. The theories and frameworks that inform our model address family functioning and growth in times of stress, coping strategies that promote positive family outcomes and resilience, and multicultural factors that may affect family experiences. A key contribution of our model is highlighting the role of family engagement in improving HCT family outcomes.DISCUSSION: Application of a family systems lens highlights the essential role families play in the care of HCT patients and can foster family well-being. We offer the HCT family resilience conceptual model as a guide for practice and policy improvements to optimize care delivery for this patient and family population, as well as direction for future research. Abstract:Although protein receptors on the plasma membrane involved in the initial steps of productive HIV-1 infection have been well characterized, little is known about interactions between cellular carbohydrate receptors and HIV-1. Here, we report the involvement of a carbohydrate receptor, the macrophage mannose receptor (MR), and its role in supporting HIV-1 binding and entry. HIV-1 can enter the cytoplasm of human macrophages and microglia as well as murine macrophages by MR, although no subsequent viral replication was observed. Correspondingly, HIV-1 entry into Cos-7 cells after induction of expression of MR by transfection with MR-cDNA did not demonstrate viral replication. Our studies suggest that whereas MR may serve as a binding and an entry site, the MR-mediated pathway does not lead to productive HIV-1 infection. In addition, we report that recombinant HIV-1 gp120 blocks MR-mediated phagocytosis in human and murine alveolar macrophages and microglial cells. Therefore, characterization of the HIV-1 noninfectious MR-mediated phagocytic pathway may foster advances in HIV-1 vaccine design and an improved understanding of HIV-1/AIDS pathogenesis and host defenses.
Social determinants of health predict health outcomes following pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant

Abstract:Background Pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is an intensive medical procedure that places substantial financial and logistical burdens on families and is associated with significant health risks, such as graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD), and infections. The influence of the social determinants of health (SDoH) on outcomes following pediatric HCT is understudied. This study aimed to examine whether SDoH predicts outcomes following pediatric HCT. Procedure Data were collected from 84 children who received HCT (Mage = 5.8 years, SD = 3.7) and their primary caregiver. Detailed demographic information was collected from caregivers at baseline, and child health information was extracted from the electronic medical records. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between SDoH and health outcomes within a 24‐month period following pediatric HCT. Results After controlling for malignancy as reason for transplant and donor type, lower family income predicted the incidence of chronic GVHD. Neighborhood deprivation, total family income, public health insurance, caregiver relationship status, caregiver educational attainment, and perceived family financial difficulties did not predict acute GVHD or the number of infections. Conclusions Total family income is a simple family indicator of SDoH that predicts chronic GVHD after pediatric allogeneic HCT. These findings provide further support for the importance of screening of child and family SDoH risks to ensure that fundamental needs can be met to mitigate potential health disparities for up to 2 years following pediatric HCT.
