Abstract:Abstract A total of 105 sows (Line 241, DNA, Columbus, NE) were used across four batch farrowing groups to evaluate the effects of feeding a feed flavor in lactation diets on sow and litter performance. Sow groups 1 and 2 farrowed in an old farrowing facility during the summer months and groups 3 and 4 farrowed in a new farrowing facility during the winter months. Sows were blocked by body weight (BW) within parity on d 110 of gestation and allotted to 1 of 2 dietary treatments. Dietary treatments were a standard corn-soy-based lactation diet (control) or the control diet with the addition of a feed flavor at 0.05% of diet (Krave AP, Adisseo, Alpharetta, GA, USA). Farrowing facility environment had a large impact and resulted in many interactions with the feed flavor treatment. From farrowing to weaning, sows fed the feed flavor in the old farrowing house tended to have a higher (P = 0.058) lactation feed intake, while no difference in ADFI was observed in the new farrowing house. Pigs weaned from sows fed the feed flavor in the old farrowing facility had a higher (P = 0.026) BW at weaning and piglet average daily gain (ADG) from d 2 to weaning (P = 0.001) compared to piglets from sows not fed the feed flavor; whereas the opposite occurred in the new farrowing house. Progeny from one farrowing group in the old farrowing facility was followed into the nursery. A total of 360 weaned pigs (DNA 241 × 600: initially 5.7 kg) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial in the nursery portion of the study to evaluate the effects of previous sow feed flavoring treatment (control vs flavor) and nursery diets formulated with or without a feed flavor on growth performance in a 38-d trial. Nursery treatments were either a control diet or a diet containing a feed flavor (Delistart #NA 21, Adisseo, Alpharetta, GA, USA). Offspring from sows fed the flavor diet were heavier at weaning (P < 0.001) which was maintained throughout the study. Overall, progeny from sows fed a diet containing a feed flavor had greater (P < 0.05) ADG, ADFI, and final BW during the trial. The presence of a feed flavor in the nursery did not improve overall nursery performance. In conclusion, when sow lactation feed intake was increased in the old farrowing house, pigs weaned from sows fed the flavor diet were heavier (P = 0.039) at weaning compared to pigs weaned from sows fed the control diet. Adding the feed flavor increased sow feed intake and piglet ADG in a warm environment, but not in a cool environment.
Effects of feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product and ractopamine hydrochloride to finishing beef steers on growth performance, immune system, and muscle gene expression

Abstract:Abstract The objective of this study was to determine impacts on immune parameters, anti-oxidant capacity, and growth of finishing steers fed a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP; NaturSafe; Diamond V, Cedar Rapids, IA) and ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC; Optaflexx; Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN). Angus-crossbred steers (N = 288) from two sources were utilized in this 90-d study. Steers were blocked by source, stratified by initial body weight to pens of six steers, and pens randomly assigned to treatments (16 pens per treatment). Three treatments compared feeding no supplemental SCFP (control; CON) and supplemental SCFP for 57 d (SCFP57), and 29 d (SCFP29) before harvest. Supplementation of SCFP was 12 g per steer per d, and all steers were fed RAC at 300 mg per steer per d for 29 d before harvest. Blood samples were collected from3 steers per pen, and muscle samples were collected from 1 steer per pen at 57, 29 (start of RAC), and 13 (midRAC) days before harvest. Blood was analyzed from 2 steers per pen for ferric reducing anti-oxidant power (FRAP). Muscle gene expression of myokines, markers of anti-oxidant and growth signaling were assessed. Individual animal BW were also collected on 57, 29, 13, and 1 d before being harvested at a commercial facility (National Beef, Tama, IA). Data were analyzed using the Mixed procedure of SAS 9.4 (Cary, NC) with pen as the experimental unit. The model included fixed effects of treatment and group. Increased BW compared to CON was observed days −29, −13, and −1 in SCFP57 steers (P ≤ 0.05), with SCFP29 being intermediate days −13 and −1. Overall G:F was improved in SCFP29 and SCFP57 (P = 0.01). On day −29, FRAP was greater in SCFP57 than CON (P = 0.02). The percent of gamma delta T cells and natural killer cells in both SCFP29 and SCFP57 was greater than CON on day −13 (P = 0.02). There were no treatment × day effects for muscle gene expression measured (P ≥ 0.25). Interleukin 6 tended to decrease in SCFP29 and SCFP57 on day −13 (P = 0.10). No other treatment effects were observed for muscle gene expression. Muscle gene expression of interleukin 15 was increased (P = 0.01), and expression of interleukin 8 was decreased (P = 0.03) due to RAC feeding. Increased growth in SCFP-fed cattle may be related to changes in anti-oxidant capacity and the immune system.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of adding flavoring agents to fermented cassava pulp (FCPU) on nutrient utilization, ruminal fermentation characteristics, and blood metabolites in growing cattle. Materials and methods: A duplicated 3 × 3 Latin square design was randomly assigned to six growing beef cattle. Treatments were: 1) untreated FCPU (control), 2) 0.05% w/v vanilla-flavored FCPU, and 3) 0.05% w/v amyl acetate-flavored FCPU. Results: The results showed that flavoring agents did not affect dry matter intake (DMI) or digestibility of nutrients. Rumen pH and ammonia nitrogen concentrations did not change all treatments postfeeding. Flavoring added to FCPU after feeding did not affect total volatile fatty acid (VFA) or VFA percentage. However, propionic acid levels tended to be lower in the vanilla-flavored FCPU group than those in the unflavored FCPU group at 0 h postfeeding (p < 0.01). Growing bulls fed vanilla-flavored FCPU tended to have greater fungal zoospores in the rumen than those fed amyl acetate-flavored FCPU (p < 0.1) at 2 h after feeding. Dietary treatments did not affect blood glucose and urea nitrogen concentrations (p > 0.05). However, blood triglyceride concentration was greater for cattle fed a control diet than other treatments at 0 h postfeeding (p < 0.05) and tended to be higher than those fed vanilla-flavored FCPU at 2 h afterfeeding (p < 0.1). Conclusion: It was suggested that adding vanilla or amyl acetate flavor to the FCPU showed no adverse effects on ruminal fermentation, blood metabolites, or nutritional digestibility; however, it did not increase DMI.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of flavor on reproductive performance and fecal microbiota of sows during late gestation and lactation. A total of 20 healthy Yorkshire sows were fed a corn-soybean basal diet unsupplemented or supplemented with 0.1% flavor compound from d 90 of gestation to 25 d post-farrowing, and then the piglets were weaned. The reproductive performance and the fecal microbiota of sows were analyzed. Compared with the controls, flavor supplementation in maternal diets increased (P < 0.05) weaning litter weight, litter weight gain, weaning body weight, and average daily gain of piglets. There was a trend of increase in the average daily feed intake of sows (P = 0.09) by maternal dietary flavor addition. The backfat thickness and litter size were not affected by flavor supplementation (P > 0.05). The 16S rRNA analysis showed that flavor supplementation significantly increased the abundance of Phascolarctobacterium (P < 0.05), but significantly decreased genera Terrisporobacter, Alloprevotella, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and Escherichia-shigella (P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that Phascolarctobacterum was positively correlated with the average daily feed intake of sows (P < 0.05), the litter weight gain and average daily gain of piglets (P < 0.05). In contrast, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae were negatively correlated with the litter weight gain and average daily gain of piglets (P < 0.05). Taken together, dietary flavor supplementation improved the reproductive performance of the sows, which was associated with enhanced beneficial microbiota and decreased potentially pathogenic bacteria in the sows.
Effects of bacterial direct-fed microbial combinations on beef cattle growth performance, feeding behavior, nutrient digestibility, ruminal morphology, and carcass characteristics

Abstract:The effects of the dietary inclusion of a mixture of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) on feedlot beef cattle growth performance, carcass characteristics, nutrient digestibility, feeding behavior, and ruminal papillae morphology were evaluated. Crossbred-Angus steers (n = 192; initial body weight (BW) = 409 kg ± 8 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned into 48 pens (4 steers/pen and 16 pens/treatment) following a randomized complete block design. A steam-flaked corn-based fishing diet was offered to ad libitum intake once daily for 153 d containing the following treatments: (1) Control (no DFM, lactose carrier only); (2) treat-A (Lactobacillus animalis, Propionibacterium freudenreichii, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis), at 1:1:1:3 ratio, respectively; totaling 6 × 109 CFU (50 mg)/animal-daily minimum; and (3) treat-B, the same DFM combination, but with doses at 1:1:3:1 ratio. Bacterial counts were ~30% greater than the minimum expected. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS, with pen as the experimental unit, the fixed effect of treatment, and the random effect of BW-block, while preplanned contrasts comparing Control × treat-A or treat-B were used. Steers offered treat-A had increased carcass-adjusted average daily gain (P = 0.03) by 6.7%, gain efficiency (P < 0.01) by 6%, tended (P = 0.07) to have increased carcass-adjusted final BW by 15 kg, and hot carcass weight (P = 0.07) by 10 kg, while treat-B did not differ (P ≥ 0.17) from control. Overall dry matter (DM) intake (P = 0.36) and other carcass traits (P ≥ 0.13) were not affected by treatments. Steers offered treat-A tended to have increased digestibility of DM (P = 0.07) by 3%, neutral detergent fiber (P = 0.10), and hemicellulose (P = 0.08) by 9% compared with control, while treat-B did not differ (P ≥ 0.10) from control. No treatment × period interactions (P ≥ 0.21) or main effects of treatment (P ≥ 0.12) were observed during 24-h feeding behavior. Steers ruminated, ate, chewed, and were more active (P ≤ 0.01) during the second behavioral assessment (day 113), while drinking behavior was not affected (P ≥ 0.88). Ruminal papillae morphology and ruminal ammonia concentration (ruminal fluid collected at slaughter facility) were not affected by treatment (P ≥ 0.39). Steers offered the DFM treat-A had improved growth performance and it positively affected carcass weight and nutrient digestion. The DFM combinations did not seem to affect feedlot cattle feeding behavior or ruminal papillae morphology.

Abstract:Abstract Two 89-d experiments (Exp 1 and Exp 2) evaluated the effects of feeding an immunomodulatory feed additive (NutraGen; NG) in calves following exposure to bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) on d -3 and Mannheimia haemolytica (MH) infection on d 0. For each experiment, steers [body weight (BW = 251 ± 38.2 kg were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments. Treatments included a placebo (CON; Exp 1 n = 5; Exp 2 n = 5), a placebo fed from d -18 to d -3 followed by NG fed from d -3 to d 28 (CHLG; Exp 1 n = 5; Exp 2 n = 6), and NG fed from d -18 to d 28 (PREC; Exp 1 n = 6; Exp 2 n = 5). Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS Version 9.4 (SAS Institute, Cary, N.C.). Animal served as the experimental unit and time served as a repeated measure. Treatment, time, and the treatment × time interaction served as fixed effects. Block was included as a random effect. Cytokine data were tested for normality using the Shapiro-Wilk test, determined to be non-normal, and logarithm (base 10) transformed as a result prior to statistical analysis. Multiple time effects and treatment × time interactions occurred for serum MH, BVDV 1, and BVDV 2 antibody concentrations in both experiments (P ≤ 0.05). In Exp 1, there was a tendency for an overall treatment effect for calves assigned to the CON treatment to exhibit the greatest MH serum antibody concentrations (P = 0.06). While no differences were detected between treatment groups, BVDV 1 and BVDV 2 antibody concentrations peaked on the same day in both experiments, d 28 post-challenge. There were no treatment × time interactions, treatment effects, or time effects for serum TNF-α, IFN-γ, or IL-17A concentrations (P ≥ 0.13) in either experiment. In Exp 1, there was a treatment effect for serum IL-10 (P ≤ 0.0001), where calves assigned to the PREC treatment had increased serum IL-10 concentrations when compared with calves in the other treatment groups. In Exp 2, there was a tendency for a treatment effect for IL-10 concentrations, where calves assigned to the PREC treatment displayed decreased IL-10 concentrations when compared with calves in the other treatment groups (P = 0.07). These data suggest that feeding NG to calves prior to a stress experience may alter cellular responses. Overall, these experiments suggest that NG impacted antibody concentrations and cytokine expression during a bovine respiratory disease challenge.

Supplementation of Live Yeast, Mannan Oligosaccharide, and Organic Selenium during the Adaptation Phase of Newly Arrived Beef Cattle: Effects on Health Status, Immune Functionality, and Growth Performance

Abstract:The effect of a nutraceutical mixture, based on live yeast (LY), mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) and organic selenium (Se) on health status, as well as immune functionality and growth performance in the fattening of newly received beef cattle, was evaluated. A total of 1036 Charolaise heifers were allocated into two experimental groups: (i) control group, without any nutraceutical support (n = 487; initial weight = 325 ± 21 kg); and (ii) treatment group, supplementation during the first 30 days, with LY (5 g/head/day), organic Se (3 mg/head/day), and MOS (10 g/head/day) (n = 549; initial weight = 323 ± 23 kg). The incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and other health issues was monitored, as well as the mortality rate. Blood samples were taken at d0 and d30 to evaluate the immune functionality and the inflammatory status. Growth performances, feces chemical composition, and carcass characteristics were recorded. The BRD occurrence tended to be reduced (p = 0.06) in the Treatment group. The BHV-1 antibody production after vaccination was significantly improved (p = 0.031), as well as the bactericidal activity (p = 0.0012) in the Treatment group. No differences were found in the inflammatory status parameters. The final weight (p = 0.006) and the average daily gain at d30 (p < 0.0001) were significantly improved by the treatment. No differences were found in terms of carcass characteristics, while the fecal content of NDF (p < 0.0001), ADF (p = 0.0003), and starch (p < 0.0001) were significantly reduced by the treatment. The result of the present study suggests that the nutraceutical mixture used can support the animal’s immune systems, improving its ability to react against pathogens, as well as feed efficiency and growth performances during the whole fattening period.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) mixtures on beef cattle feeding behavior were evaluated. Six ruminally cannulated crossbred Angus steers (BW = 520 ± 30 kg) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin Square design. Steers were offered a steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet to ad libitum during three, 28 d periods (21-d adaptation and 7-d collection). Treatments assigned were: 1) Control (no DFM, lactose carrier only); 2) Treat-A [L. animalis, P. freudenreichii; B. subtilis; and B. licheniformis, at 1:1:1:3 ratio, respectively; totaling 6 × 109 CFU (50mg)/animal-daily minimum (Chr.Hansen]; and 3) Treat-B, the same DFM combination, but with doses at 1:1:3:1 ratio. Bacterial counts were approximately 30% greater than the minimum expected. The DFM diluted mixtures and carrier (Control) were pre-weighed and stored at -20°C until incorporated into the diet (2 g· animal-1· /day-1) 10 min prior to feeding. For mixing, approximately 1 kg (as is) of the diet being offered was removed from the individual recipient, DFM was mixed by hand, and the mixture was incorporated into the feed allocated for the day. The feeding behavior assessment consisted of a 24 h continuous visual observation (every 5 min) performed by trained personnel. Animals were assessed on d 26 of each period (no other management other than cleaning of the stall), while time spent eating, ruminating, resting, active, and drinking were taken. Time spent chewing was accounted for by adding time spent eating and ruminating. In addition, records allowed the count of the number of meals taken, as well as the time spent on each meal. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS, with animal considered as the experimental unit, the fixed effects of treatment, and random effect of square, period, and animal (square). F-test protected pre-planned orthogonal contrasts was used to compare Control vs. Treat-A and Control vs. Treat-B. Meal number (16/d) and length (8 min/meal) were not affected by treatments (P ≥ 0.54). Main feeding behavior variables consisting of rumination (198 min/d), eating (117 min/d), chewing (315 min/d), drinking (22 min/d), resting (929 min/d), and active (174 min/d) were not affected (P ≥ 0.24) by treatments. A tendency was observed (P = 0.08) where animals offered the Treat-B spent numerically less time ruminating per unit of digestible DM and OM intake compared with Control (13.5 vs. 15.5, and 13.7 vs 15.6 min/kg, respectively). Other behaviors measured in min/kg of DM, NDF, and ADF intake were not affected (P ≥ 0.17) by treatments [rumination (11.5, 60.2, and 181), eating (6.5, 34.4, and 104), chewing (18, 94.6, and 285), and drinking (1.2, 6.6, and 19.8) min/kg, respectively]. The bacterial DFM mixtures offered appear not to directly affect the feeding behavior of beef cattle consuming a steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet.

Abstract:It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the ACM 2007 Conference on Languages Compilers and Tools for Embedded Systems (LCTES'07) on behalf of its organizational committees. The aim of LCTES is to provide a premier forum for sharing the latest significant research results on embedded systems, with an emphasis on programming languages, compilers, tools, and novel architectures. We hope that you will find this year's program interesting and thought-provoking and that the conference will once again provide you with a good opportunity to interact with researchers and practitioners from around the world. In response to our call for papers, 76 papers were submitted from academic and industrial institutions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, Middle East, and North and South Americas. All submissions were reviewed through a "double-blind" process, in which the authors remained anonymous (except to the Program Chair) until the acceptance decisions were made by the program committee. Papers submitted by members of the program committee were subjected to the same review process. Neither the program Chair nor the general Chair submitted any papers. Each submitted paper was reviewed by at least three committee members, with the help from external expert reviewers in some cases. Over 93% of the submitted papers were each reviewed by four to six committee members. The program committee convened on the 25th of March in Chicago for an all-day meeting to reach consensus on the program. Members with a potential conflict of interest on a paper neither reviewed nor participated in the discussion of the paper. Anyone from the same institution of a coauthor or, in the past three years, having published a paper with him or her is considered as having a conflict of interest on that submission. The program chair had a conflict of interest on one of the submissions. The review and discussion of that paper was moderated by Professor Jack Davidson of University of Virginia without any involvement of the Program Chair. At the end of the meeting, the program committee selected 21 high quality papers for the regular program, representing roughly a 28% acceptance rate. The committee also identified nine additional papers and invited their authors to the poster session. We are pleased that the poster authors have an opportunity to present a work-in-progress summary in a special session. The composition of the program before you covers a range of important issues in embedded systems, including software reliability, low-power computing, embedded Java, real-time systems, multi-core systems, VLIW for DSP/stream applications, compiler analysis, and the entire memory hierarchy. We thank the program committee and the external reviewers for their diligent review effort and to all the authors who submitted their most recent fine work to this conference.
350 Effects of Adding Yeast Derivatives to High Concentrate Diets on Performance and Feeding Behavior of Beef Cattle Finished in Feedlot

Abstract:Abstract Yeast derivatives enhance beef cattle performance (Torres et al., 2022), allowing farmers to increase feedlot financial income. However, yeast derivatives vary on yeast species, grown medium, purity, technological processing, yeast cell parts marketed.Thus, in these experiments, we aimed to understand the potential of different yeast derivatives to manipulate performance, feed intake, and feeding behavior. In experiment 1, 1,760 non-castrated males were used to study performance and feed intake. These animals were distributed in large pens, mimicking actual feedlot operations. In xperiment 2, 96 animals with radio frequency identification ear tags were allocated in small groups with induvial access to automatic feeders equipped with scales to study daily individual feeding behavior. Animals were allocated to four treatments: 1) Control, no yeast derivative; 2) AY - 7g/animal/day, autolyzed Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on sugarcane molasses, RumenYeast (ICC, São Paulo, Brazil); 3) YM - 3g/animal day, yeast rich in soluble yeast metabolites; 4) YB - 5g/animal/day, yeast blend (live Yeast plus autolyzed Yeast. Orthogonal contrasts were performed comparing control against AY, YM, and YB. Differences were declared significant at P < 0.05 and as a trend when 0.05 < P < 0.10. Pen was considered as the experimental unit for experiment 1. For experiment 2, animals were considered the experimental unit. Regarding experiment 1, AY tended to increase adjusted average daily gain and hot carcass weight (Table 1). Dry matter intake did not differ between treatments in experiment 1 (large pen trial). Looking at individual intake data, experiment 2, feeding behavior and water intake changed when yeast derivatives were included in the diet. In general, animals supplemented with AY spent less time eating, which was more evident in the adaptation period (Table 1). AY and YB had stimulated feed intake in some periods of experiment 2. However, the evident less time spent eating by the AY group promoted a greater feeding rate (kg ingested/min) markedly compared with YM and YB, but in general, also greater than control. Considering the initial period of feedlot operations, this greater feeding rate could favor animals supplemented with AY to adapt faster to feedlot diet/feeding conditions. All yeast derivatives increased water intake. In summary, autolyzed Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on sugarcane molasses increased beef cattle performance and feeding rate. This change in feeding behavior may accelerate the adaptation of beef cattle in the transition from the backgrounding phase to the feedlot operation.

Abstract:We evaluated the effect of feed additives on the risk of ruminal acidosis in Holstein heifers (n = 40) fed starch and fructose in a challenge study. Heifers were randomly allocated to feed additive groups (n = 8 heifers/group): (1) control (no additives); (2) virginiamycin (VM); (3) monensin + tylosin (MT); (4) monensin + live yeast (MLY); and (5) sodium bicarbonate + magnesium oxide (BUF). Heifers were fed 2.5% of body weight (BW) dry matter intake (DMI) per day of a total mixed ration (62:38 forage:concentrate) and feed additives for a 20-d adaptation period. Fructose (0.1% of BW/d) was included for the last 10d of the adaptation period. On d 21, heifers were fed to target a DMI of 1.0% of BW of wheat, fructose at 0.2% of BW, and their feed additives. Rumen fluid samples obtained by stomach tube and blood samples were collected weekly as well as during a 3.6-h period on challenge day (d 21). Virginiamycin and BUF groups maintained a consistently high DMI across the 20-d adaptation period. The MLY heifers had low DMI of the challenge ration. Average daily gain and feed conversion ratio were not affected by feed additives. All rumen and plasma measures changed weekly over adaptation and over the challenge sampling period with the exception of rumen total lactate and histamine concentrations, plasma oxidative stress index, and ceruloplasmin. Substantial within- and between-group variation was observed in rumen and plasma profiles at challenge sampling. No significant group changes were observed in rumen total volatile fatty acids, propionate, acetate-to-propionate ratio, isobutyrate, caproate, isovalerate, total lactate, d- and l-lactate, and pH measures on challenge day. Acetate concentration was increased in the BUF and control groups on challenge day. Butyrate concentration was lower in the MLY and MT groups compared with other groups at challenge. Valerate concentrations were lowest in the control, VM, and BUF groups and lactate concentrations were numerically lower in the MLY, VM, and BUF groups. Total lactate concentrations were >10mM for each group throughout the challenge. Ammonia concentrations were lower in the MLY and MT groups. Histamine concentrations were decreased in MLY and increased in the VM and BUF groups. Plasma oxidative stress measures were not influenced by feed additives weekly or on challenge day, except for an increase in biological antioxidant potential in the control, VM, and MT groups on challenge day. Despite the large within-animal variation, all feed additives modified rumen function and may influence the risk of acidosis by different mechanisms; however, none stabilized the rumen in all heifers.

Abstract:Abstract: Forty-eight newly weaned crossbred beef steers from a single-source were used to determine the effects of feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP; NaturSafe, Diamond V) on receiving period performance, nutrient digestibility, and antioxidant defense. Seven days after arrival, steers were stratified by BW (257 ± 18 kg), sorted into pens (n = 1 pen/treatment), and pens assigned to dietary treatments: SCFP at 0 (CON), 12 (SCFP12), 18 (SCFP18), or 0 g·steer−1·d−1 during preconditioning (PRE; days −19 to 0), then 18 g·steer−1·d−1 during receiving (REC; days 0 to 58; CON18). On day −1 BW and blood were collected, steers were loaded onto a semitruck and transported 1,748 km over 19 h. Upon return, steers were weighed, stratified by BW within treatment and sorted into pens with GrowSafe bunks (n = 12 steers/treatment). Steers were weighed on days −1, 0, 29, 30, 57, and 58. Blood was collected from all steers on days −1, 1, and 8 and liver biopsies were performed on all steers on days −20, −3, and 59. Titanium dioxide was included as an indigestible marker in the diet of all steers from days 14 through 29 to determine total tract nutrient digestibility. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design using ProcMixed of SAS with the fixed effect of treatment. Steer was the experimental unit for REC period variables. Contrast statements compared the linear and quadratic effects of feeding SCFP throughout the trial (CON, SCFP12, and SCFP18) and the effect of supplementation at 18 g·steer−1·d−1 for the entire trial or starting in REC (SCFP18 vs. CON18). Steers fed SCFP12 exhibited the greatest ADG and G:F from days 0 to 30 (quadratic P ≤ 0.04). Total tract digestibility of NDF and ADF was linearly decreased by SCFP (linear P ≤ 0.03). On day −3, SCFP12-fed steers tended to have the greatest liver concentrations of total, oxidized, and reduced glutathione (quadratic P = 0.06). Red blood cell lysate Mn:total-superoxide dismutase activity was 16% greater 1 d posttransit compared with pretransit values (day P ≤ 0.01). Timing of SCFP supplementation (SCFP18 vs. CON18) did not affect any of the variables assessed herein (P ≥ 0.19). Supplementing SCFP at 12 g·steer−1·d−1 tended to affect antioxidant capacity prior to transit and improved early receiving period performance; however, overall receiving period performance was not affected by SCFP supplementation. Further research is necessary to determine the optimal dose and timing of SCFP supplementation for beef cattle.

Abstract:The objective was to determine the influence of long-term supplementation (258 d) of a direct-fed microbial (DFM) and/or yeast cell wall (YCW) product on bacterial populations in beef steers. Single-sourced Charolais × Red Angus steers (n = 256; body weight = 246 ± 1.68 kg) were used in a randomized complete block design and blocked by location into one of four treatments: 1) fed no DFM and no YCW (Control); 2) fed only the DFM (DFM; Certillus CP B1801 Dry, 28 g/steer d-1 ); 3) fed only the YCW (YCW; Celmanax; 18 g/steer d-1 ); and 4) fed the DFM and the YCW (DFM+YCW). Steers were vaccinated for respiratory and clostridial diseases and treated for internal and external parasites at processing and individually weighed on days 1, 14, 42, 77, 105, 133, 161, 182, 230, and 258. To determine bacterial prevalence, fecal samples were collected on days 1, 14, 77, 133, 182, and 230 and environmental (pen area, feed, and water) samples were collected at the beginning of the week when cattle were weighed. No treatment × day interactions or treatment effects (P > 0.05) were observed between treatment groups at any sampling days for the bacterial populations. Samples on days 1, 133, and 182 had greater (P < 0.05) Clostridia levels compared to the other sampling points but were not different from each other. Clostridia levels were also greater (P < 0.05) on day 77 compared to days 14 and 230. Samples on days 77 and 230 had greater (P < 0.05) Clostridium perfringens levels compared to the other sampling points but were not different (P > 0.05) from each other. Samples on days 1 and 14 had lower (P < 0.05) total Escherichia coli levels compared to the other sampling points but were not different (P > 0.05) from each other. Escherichia coli levels on day 77 were higher (P < 0.05) compared to days 133, 182, and 230. Little Salmonella prevalence (1.5%) was observed throughout the study. This study had greater levels of Clostridia compared to small and large commercial feedlots in the Church and Dwight research database, but C. perfringens, total and pathogenic E. coli, and Salmonella prevalence were notably lower. Collectively, there were no appreciable treatment influences on bacterial populations. These data further indicate a low pathogenic bacterial challenge at the trial site, which could partially explain the lack of differences with DFM or YCW supplementation. The DFM and YCW used alone or in combination cannot be expected to show additional benefits when animals are relatively unstressed with a low pathogenic bacterial challenge.

Abstract:There are several types of glucose-consuming, immunologically active nonparenchymal cells interspersed among the glucose-producing parenchymal liver cells. Combining the in vivo 2-deoxyglucose tracer technique with cell separation methods enabled us to investigate the effect of Escherichia coli endotoxin on the rate of glucose utilization by the nonparenchymal cells. Rats were injected with [14C]deoxyglucose, and intracellular 2-deoxyglucose 6-phosphate was determined in different liver cell fractions. Parenchymal, Kupffer, and endothelial cells as well as polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were separated from the liver by centrifugal elutriation followed by Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient. The number of PMN obtained from the liver was increased severalfold 3 h after endotoxin and was comparable to the number of Kupffer cells. Glucose utilization by the liver of fasted rats was due predominantly to nonparenchymal cells. Endotoxin enhanced the rate of glucose utilization by Kupffer (6.7-fold) and endothelial (2.7-fold) cells and by the infiltrated hepatic PMN (5.4-fold). Enhanced glucose metabolism of immunologically active cells is part of the hepatic immune response and subserves the antibacterial defense of the body. The activated cells, however, may also have the potential of causing tissue damage by releasing harmful toxic metabolites.

Abstract:Nutritional alternatives to strengthen animal immunocompetence are critical for welfare and productivity in livestock systems, such as beef cattle operations. This experiment evaluated physiological and innate immunity effects of supplementing an immunomodulatory feed ingredient (Omnigen-AF; Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ, USA) to beef heifers administered bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In total, 8 non-pregnant, non-lactating nulliparous Angus×Hereford heifers (676±4 days of age) were ranked by BW (473±8 kg), and assigned to crossover design containing two periods of 34 days each. Heifers were housed in individual pens and had ad libitum access to meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis L.) hay, water and a granulated commercial vitamin+mineral mix. Within each period, heifers received (as-fed basis) 227 g/day of dried distillers grains including (OMN) or not (CON) 56 g of Omnigen-AF for 34 days. On day 28 of each period (0800 h), heifers received an intravenous bolus dose (0.5 μg/kg of BW, diluted in 5 ml of 0.9% sterile saline) of bacterial LPS (Escherichia coli 0111:B4). Hay DM intake was recorded daily from day 0 to 34. Blood was collected at -1, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144 h relative to LPS administration. Heifer intravaginal temperature was recorded every 10 min from -0.5 to 10 h relative to LPS administration. No treatment effect was detected (P=0.35) for hay DM intake during the experiment. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.64) for intravaginal temperature and plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis-α, cortisol and haptoglobin, which increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 4.5, 2, 4 and 48 h, respectively, after LPS administration. No treatment effects were detected (P⩾0.35) for whole blood mRNA expression of chemokine ligand 5, tumor necrosis-α, cyclooxygenase 2 and interleukin 8, which also increased (time effect, P<0.01) for OMN and CON heifers and peaked at 0.5, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Whole blood mRNA expression of interleukin 8 receptor and L-selectin were also similar (P⩾0.61) between OMN and CON heifers, and decreased (time effect, P<0.01) for both treatments reaching nadir levels at 1 and 2.5 h, respectively, after LPS administration. Collectively, OMN supplementation did not modulate the physiological and innate immunity responses of beef heifers to bacterial LPS administration.

Abstract:Abstract Feeding ruminants with a blend of autolyzed yeast grown on sugarcane molasses and live yeast allows nutritionists to explore synergistic effects on digestion and performance (Angulo et al.,2021; Zapata et al., 2021). However, the feeding behavior and the challenges faced in large pen feedlot operations differ from the behavior and challenges faced by animals studied in small groups or metabolic cages. Therefore, we aimed to study the feeding behavior and performance of beef cattle fed in groups in large pens, mimicking the feedlot operations of leading producers and exports of meat in the world. The trial lasted 112 days and was conducted in Nutripura’s research center in the midwest of Brazil. Six hundred five non-castrated males (Nelore and F1 Nelore-Angus), 405 kg (± 35), distributed in 20 pens, were divided into two treatments: 1) Control, a diet with no yeast additives; 2) Yeast Blend (YB), a diet with a blend of autolyzed yeast and live yeast, SymbioYeast, 7g/anima/day (ICC, São Paulo, Brazil). Both diets contained monesin (28 mg/kg DM). The data were analyzed in the software SAS following the model Yijk= μ+Ti + Fj + Bk +еijk (μ = general mean; T = treatment effect; F = Breed effect; B = backgrounding phase effect; e = error). Initial body weight was used as a covariable to analyze final body weight and average daily gain (ADG). Dry matter intake increased (P < 0,05) when animals were supplemented with YB (10,99kg vs. 11,12kg). Final body weight and hot carcass weight tended (0.1 > P ≥ 0.05) to increase when YB was added to the diet. (598 kg vs. 602 kg, 343 kg vs. 345 kg). The ADG was unaffected (P = 0.1069, control 1.735 kg, and YB 1.768 kg). Increasing DMI is a well now property of some yeast derivatives (Torres et al., 2022). This may be related to changes in digestion (Torres et al., 2022) and the diet’s palatability. The palatability of yeast products is claimed on organoleptic and flavor characteristics (Tao et al., 2023). Drone photos taken every 15 minutes suggested that YB altered how animals interact with feed. Feed was delivered between 0700 h and -0930 h and 1300 h and 1530 h. After delivery, a greater percentage of the visit of the animals to the feed bunkers in YB groups. This behavior was even more evident in the morning feed delivery (Figure 1). In summary, YB increased intake and performance. It also changed the interest of animals in visiting feed bunk.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Hyperuricemia is common in pediatric renal transplant recipients, and it is associated with poor allograft outcomes. Hyperuricemia occurs early after transplant and is associated with use of diuretics, cyclosporine therapy, a history of hyperuricemia, and decreased glomerular filtration rate. We aimed to investigate causes and effects of hyperuricemia on allograft outcomes in our patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS There were 81 pediatric transplant patients (41 female and 40 male) included in the study. Demographic characteristics and laboratory parameters were recorded. Risk factors for hyperuricemia and the effects of plasma uric acid levels at 3, 6, 12, and 36 months on allograft outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS Mean age was 16.9 ± 5.6 years. Mean follow-up after transplant was 3.5 ± 0.47 years. Hyperuricemia was detected in 17.6% patients. A significant negative correlation was observed between 6-month uric acid level and 36-month glomerular filtration rate (r = -0.33, P = .04; r = -0.33, P = .017). A significant positive correlation between 3- and 6-month uric acid levels and 36-month plasma creatinine level was observed (r = -0.44, P = .01; r = -0.51, P = .001). There was no significant correlation between plasma uric acid level and body mass index, plasma lipid levels, use of diuretics, or immunosuppressive treatment (tacrolimus or cyclosporine). CONCLUSIONS Uric acid levels may have predictive value in the long-term assessment of renal function. Posttransplant hyperuricemia can be used as a long-term prognostic marker of poor renal outcome. Patients with hyperuricemia should be monitored closely for renal function.

Abstract:Fermented distiller's grains( FDG )are rich in nutrients and can improve the growth performance of domestic animals, which is a high-quality alternative for animal feedstuff. However, there are few reports on the effect of feeding FDG diets on spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) immune status and metabolomics in domestic animals. In the present study, eighteen Guanling crossbred cattle (18 months old, 250.0 ± 25 kg) were randomly divided into 3 groups: a basal diet (Control) group, a FDG-15% group, and a FDG-30% group (containing 0%, 15% and 30% FDG to partially replace the concentrates, respectively). After 60 days, the spleens and MLN were collected for detection of relative spleen weight, immune indicator, and metabolomic analysis. Compared with the Control group, FDG-30% group significantly increased ( P 1, P 1, P <0.05) were obtained in the MLN samples from the FDG-15% and FDG-30% groups. Further classification of differential metabolites showed that lipids and lips-like molecules accounted for the majority of metabolites in spleen and MLN samples. KEGG analysis illustrated that choline metabolism in cancer, glycerophospholipid metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and insulin resistance were key metabolic pathways in spleen shared by FDG-15% and FDG-30% groups, and choline metabolism in cancer is a key metabolic pathway in MLN shared by FDG-15% and FDG-30% groups. These results suggest that feeding FDG may promote spleen development by regulating choline metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and insulin resistance metabolic pathways without affecting immune indexes, and may affect MLN development by regulating choline metabolism in cancer. Significance Fermented distiller's grains (FDG) is a high quality alternative to feed because it is rich in beneficial microorganisms and nutrients. The spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) are important peripheral immune organs in animals, whose status reflects the health of the animal. However, there are few reports on the effect of feeding FDG diets on spleen and MLN immune status and metabolomics in domestic animals. In this study, we found that feeding FDG may promote spleen development by regulating choline metabolism in cancer, glycerophospholipid metabolism, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids and insulin resistance metabolic pathways, and may affect MLN development by regulating choline metabolism in cancer. This study extends our understanding of the metabolomics of the spleen and MLN in FDG and helps to further understand of the immunomodulatory effects of the FDG diet.

Abstract:We examined the effects of a blend of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, multiple live probiotic bacteria, and their fermentation products on performance, health, and the ruminal bacterial community of newly weaned beef steers during a 56-d receiving period. Forty newly weaned Angus crossbred steers (221 ± 25.6 kg BW; 180 ± 17 d of age) were stratified by body weight (BW) into four pens (10 steers per pen) such that each pen had a similar average BW at the beginning of the experiment. The pens were randomly assigned to receive a corn silage basal diet (CON; n = 20) or the basal diet supplemented with 9 g/steer/d of PRO feed additive (PRO; n = 20). The PRO additive is a blend of S. cerevisiae and the fermentation products of Enterococcus faecium, Bacillus licheniformis, B. subtilis, Lactobacillus animalis, and Propionibacterium freudenreichii. The DMI and water consumed were monitored using the GrowSafe intake nodes and custom flow meters, respectively. BWs were recorded weekly to calculate average daily gain (ADG). Before morning feeding, 10 mL of blood was taken from each steer on days 0-7, and thereafter weekly for analyses of immune cells, plasma glucose, and NEFAs. On day 56, rumen fluid samples (200 mL each) were collected from all the steers for microbiome analysis. Over the 56-d receiving period, the supplemental PRO had no effects on DMI, water intake, or ADG. However, compared to CON, beef steers fed supplemental PRO tended to have greater ADG (P = 0.08) and BW (P = 0.07) during the first 14 d of the study. There was a treatment × day interaction (P ≤ 0.05) for WBC, neutrophils and monocytes over the 56 d such that beef steers fed supplemental PRO had lower blood concentrations on certain days during the first 7 d after weaning, indicating reduced inflammation or stress response. The results of the rumen microbiome analysis revealed that the relative abundance of complex fiber degrading or obligate proton-reducing bacterial genera such as Bacteroides, Ruminococcus gauvreauii group, Desulfovibrio, Syntrophococcus, and Acetitomaculum were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in beef steers fed supplemental PRO compared to CON. This study demonstrated that dietary supplementation of PRO improved the growth performance, reduced stress or inflammatory response during the initial days after weaning, and altered the ruminal bacterial community toward increased relative abundance of bacterial genera associated with improved rumen function.

Abstract:The challenge in a recommendation system is to help users in dealing with the problem of information overload. Personalization, when applied to recommendation in e-market can transform a product into a dedicated solution for an individual. In this paper, we describe the method used for personalization of recommendations generated by an Interest-Based Recommender System (IBRS). This paper proposes a design framework for a personalized multi-agent IBRS. The IBRS is an agent- based recommender system that takes into account user's preferences to generate recommendations. The system is based on the agents having Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) architecture. These BDI user agents are empowered with cognitive capabilities and interact with recommender and other user agents using argumentation. The explanation process uses argumentation so that the recommender can look deeper into the reasons behind user's likes and dislikes. The IBRS considers user's feedback for recommendation repair action. This results in improvement of the personalization process. The experimental study is conducted for Travel Recommender System to show that personalized interest-based recommendations improve quality.
