Abstract:Previous studies have shown that peer relationship affects learning engagement. And learning engagement plays a vital role in promoting knowledge acquisition and production, enhancing adolescents’ academic success. However, few studies have focused on the mechanism between peer relationship and learning engagement. As such, based on Social Cognitive Theory, this study attempts to explore how peer relationship of adolescents is linked to learning engagement through the chain mediating roles of self-efficacy and academic resilience. The participants were 250 students who were selected via random sampling in a public middle school, in Eastern China, in June 2021. All the participants filled in the structured self-report questionnaires on peer relationship, self-efficacy, academic resilience, and learning engagement. The data were analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM) in SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0. Results indicated that peer relationship was directly and positively associated with learning engagement. Results also indicated that peer relationship was indirectly and positively associated with learning engagement via self-efficacy and academic resilience, respectively, and sequentially. More importantly, it was found that the direct effect was much lower than the indirect effects of which self-efficacy was the greatest. It is suggested that appropriate interventions and support should be provided to facilitate adolescents’ peer relationship, self-efficacy, and academic resilience, thus promoting their learning engagement and academic success.

Abstract:Previous studies have indicated that parent–child relationship as well as learning motivation and academic self-efficacy is an influential factor of learning engagement, but the impact mechanism of the relevant factors needs to be explored. The purpose of the current study is to investigate how parent–child relationship is related to learning engagement via the mediating roles of learning motivation and academic self-efficacy. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was adopted for the analysis of 280 participants from China. Results showed that parent–child relationship was directly correlated with adolescents’ learning engagement. Results also showed that parent–child relationship indirectly predicted adolescents’ learning engagement via learning motivation and academic self-efficacy respectively and sequentially. More importantly, it was revealed that the direct effect was much lower than the total indirect effects which include the indirect effect of learning motivation, the indirect effect of academic self-efficacy, and the indirect effect of learning motivation and academic self-efficacy. Among the three indirect effects, the indirect effect of learning motivation and academic self-efficacy was the greatest. Major findings were discussed with implications and limitations in the study.

Abstract:Through a questionnaire conducted among 432 junior high school students,the paper aims to study the relationship among achievement goal orientation,learning strategies and academic achievement. The survey shows that achievement goal orientation and learning strategies have marked total influence on academic achievement. Learning strategies have siqnificant direct influence on academic achievement mainly under the effect of cognitive strategies and motivation strategies. Achievement goal orientation has no siqnificant direct effect on academic achievement,but through the middle variable of learning strategies,can exert a siqnificant indirect effect on it. Achievement goal orientation has marked direct effect on learning strategies mainly effect the meta cognitive strategies.

Methods: The Chinese versions of the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, Academic Achievement Scale, and Learning Engagement Scale were administered to 1158 Chinese college students (544 men, 614 women; age [years]: M =19.37, SD =1.16, ranging from 17 to 30 years; college year: 641 freshmen, 302 sophomores, 197 juniors, 18 seniors). Results: The results showed that, among Chinese college students, there were positive correlations between academic self-efficacy and both academic achievement and learning engagement, and between learning engagement and academic achievement. Additionally, a structural equation model demonstrated that learning engagement could mediate the association between academic self-efficacy and achievement. Conclusion: Academic self-efficacy, learning engagement, and academic achievement were found to be significantly and positively associated in Chinese college students, with the association between self-efficacy and achievement observed to be significantly mediated by learning engagement, which mediates the link between self-efficacy and achievement. As the study was cross-sectional, causal inferences were difficult to determine; thus, longitudinal studies should be conducted in the future for further analysis of the causal relationships between these three variables. The present research results reveal the mechanism by which academic self-efficacy of college students impacts their academic achievement, expanding the research perspective of learning engagement, and can help guide the development of interventions to improve college students' academic achievement. The Joint Operations of Teacher-Student and Peer Relationships on Classroom Engagement among Low-Achieving Elementary Students: A Longitudinal Multilevel Study

Abstract:Although both teacher-student relationship (TSR) and peer relationship (PR) have been found important for the development of students' classroom engagement, little research has been done regarding the joint operations of these two factors. Guided by a developmental systems framework, this study examined longitudinal between-person and within-person associations between TSR/ PR and classroom engagement in a sample of 784 low-achieving students in the first three years of elementary school. A multidimensional approach was used to distinguish positive and negative dimensions of TSR, as well as peer liking and disliking. At the between-person level, results showed that students' classroom engagement was positively predicted by positive TSR and PR liking and was negatively predicted by negative TSR and PR disliking. Both positive and negative TSR interacted with PR disliking at the between-person level, such that the associations between positive/negative TSR and classroom engagement were stronger for students with lower levels of PR disliking. At the within-person level, changes in classroom engagement were associated with contemporaneous year-to-year changes in positive/negative TSR and PR disliking. No within-person level interaction effects were found. Cross-level interaction showed that the effects of within-person negative TSR on classroom engagement were stronger for students with lower overall levels of PR disliking. Findings highlighted the importance of using a multilevel multidimensional approach to understand the joint operations of TSR and PR in the development of classroom engagement in low-achieving students in early elementary school.

Abstract:Teachers and peers are two influential social agents in students’ academic functioning. In the present study, we differentiated perceived social relationships into positive and negative aspects and investigated how these perceptions influence students’ motivation and educational outcomes. Results based on 2211 Chinese middle school students revealed that the perceived teacher relationships emerged as more important predictors than perceived peer relationships. Differential aspects of perceived social relationships also showed distinct predictive patterns. Moreover, multiple-group comparisons further revealed that girls were more sensitive to negative teacher relationships, whereas boys were more sensitive to negative peer relationships. These findings highlight the importance of including multiple aspects of perceived social relationships and considering potential gender differences to more fully capture the factors that affect adolescents’ academic functioning.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to contribute to understanding the mechanisms underlying the association between empowering motivational climate in physical education and social responsibility among high school students, and have important implications for interventions aimed at improving social responsibility among high school students. Methods: Through the quota sampling, 802 students (average age = 17 years, SD = 0.97 years) that complied with the requirements were surveyed from Anhui Province in China. Empowering motivational climate in physical education, social responsibility, interpersonal disturbance, and general self-efficacy were assessed using standard scales. For data analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, structural equation model test, and bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap method were carried out in turn. Results: (1) Common method biases can be accepted in this study, and the correlation among empowering motivational climate in physical education, social responsibility, interpersonal disturbance, and general self-efficacy are all significant; (2)Empowering motivational climate in physical education, interpersonal disturbance and general self-efficacy can all predict social responsibility significantly; (3) Structural equation modeling indicates good fit: χ 2 / df = 2.86, RMESA = 0.068, CFI = 0.92, NNFI = 0.91, NFI = 0.90, GFI = 0.93. It indicates that interpersonal disturbance and general self-efficacy can play mediating roles between empowering motivational climate in physical education and social responsibility, respectively. After that, interpersonal disturbance as well as general self-efficacy in turn plays the chain mediating effect in the relationship between empowering motivational climate in physical education and social responsibility. The effect size of the mediating effect of interpersonal disturbance and general self-efficacy in the relationship between empowering motivational climate in physical education and social responsibility is 0.048 and 0.148, respectively, and the effect size of the chain mediating effect is 0.031. Conclusion: Empowering motivational climate in physical education not only has a direct effect on social responsibility among high school students, but also influences social responsibility by the chain mediating effect of interpersonal disturbance and general self-efficacy.

Abstract:This study investigated the internal mechanism of the relationship between primary school students’ peer relationships and their performance in the Chinese language and literature. We constructed a chain mediation model, focused on the mediation effects of parental involvement and the sense of autonomy, on the correlation between peer relationships and performance in Chinese language scores. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,503 students in grades 4–6, and their parents, in three cities in Jiangsu Province. The result indicated the following: (1) there was a significant positive correlation between primary school students’ peer relationships, parental involvement, sense of autonomy, and the level of Chinese language scores; (2) parental involvement and the sense of autonomy, respectively, mediate the relationship between peer relationships and Chinese language scores; (3) primary school students’ parental involvement and sense of autonomy play a chain-like mediating role in the relationship between their peer relationships and Chinese language scores. The research results provide a reference for exploring the educational strategies of primary school students’ Chinese literacy.

Abstract:This study’s objective was to examine direct and indirect relationships among family socioeconomic status, subjective social status, and achievement motivation within the first 3 months after college freshmen enrollment in China. A longitudinal dataset was collected over a 3-month period at four measurement points with 4-week intervals. A cluster sample of 1,983 college freshmen from the eastern, central, and western economic regions of China was surveyed. Latent growth modeling was conducted. The results indicated that achievement motivation decreased over time and was positively related to a decline in subjective social status. Mediation analyses demonstrated that, after controlling for sex and economic region, family socioeconomic status predicted the initial level of achievement motivation directly and indirectly through the initial level of subjective social status, and notably, the directions of these effects were opposite. Further, family socioeconomic status also significantly predicted the rate of change in achievement motivation indirectly through the initial level of subjective social status. These results highlight the longitudinal relationship between family socioeconomic status and achievement motivation via different pathways and have implications for improving college freshmen’s achievement motivation.

Abstract:This explored how teacher support impacted student engagement in mathematics. A total of 632 students in Grades 7 to 9 from junior middle schools in China were participants (females = 54.27%, mean age = 13.97, SD = 0.88). They completed surveys on teacher support, academic self-efficacy, achievement goal orientation, and student engagement. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0 and Amos 24.0. Results showed that academic self-efficacy mediated the relationship between perceived teacher support and student engagement. Mastery-approach and performance-approach goal orientation respectively mediated the relationship between perceived teacher support and student engagement in mathematics. Academic self-efficacy and mastery-approach had a chain mediation effect on the relationship between perceived teacher support and student engagement and academic self-efficacy. Performance-approach also had a chain mediation effect between the two. The chain mediation effect of academic self-efficacy and performance-approach was stronger than the single performance-approach effect. These findings shed light on the motivational processes through which students perceive the impact of teacher support on their engagement in mathematics.

Abstract:Adolescent behavior is closely related to academic and long-term personal development, and adolescents are vulnerable to the influences from people around them. This study aimed to analyze the factors and mechanisms that influence the behavior of adolescents. It examines the impact of family, teachers, and peers on adolescent prosocial behavior and misconduct. Data were obtained from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) follow-up data (2014–2015 school year) and 7835 middle school student participants were used for analysis. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to explore the influence and mechanisms of family, teachers, and peers on the development of adolescent social behavior. The findings showed that parental relationships, parental discipline, teacher supervision, and positive peer behavior were positively associated with adolescent prosocial behaviors and reduced the incidence of delinquent behaviors, while frequent home–school contact was associated with misconduct (all p < 0.01). These results remained significant after controlling for gender, residence, only-child status, family financial situation, and paternal education. Significant others in an adolescent's life play multiple essential roles in forming and developing adolescent behavior and in directly influencing them. To guide the prosocial behaviors of middle school students and reduce delinquent behavior, we should build harmonious parent—child, peer, and teacher–student relationships, teach according to their aptitudes, pay attention to particular groups and strengthen psychological health education to develop their self-esteem and self-confidence.

Peer Support and Exercise Adherence in Adolescents: The Chain-Mediated Effects of Self-Efficacy and Self-Regulation

Abstract:In the context of exercise psychology, the mediating relationship between peer support, self-efficacy and self-regulation, and adolescents’ exercise adherence was to be explored. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed among 2200 teenagers from twelve middle schools in Shanghai. The “process” program in SPSS and the bootstrap method were applied to construct and analyze the direct and indirect effects of peer support on adolescents’ exercise adherence. Results: Peer support directly affected adolescents’ exercise adherence (β = 0.135, p < 0.001, effect size of 59%) and self-efficacy (β = 0.493, p < 0.001, effect size accounted for 42%), and self-regulation (β = −0.184, p < 0.001, effect size of 11%) influenced exercise adherence indirectly. In addition, self-efficacy and self-regulation could impose a chain-mediated effect on peer support and exercise adherence (effect size of 6%). Conclusion: Peer support could promote adolescents’ exercise adherence. Self-efficacy and self-regulation are mediating factors of peer support on exercise adherence in teenagers, self-regulation as well as self-efficacy-imposed chain-mediating effects on peer support and adolescents’ exercise adherence.

Abstract:This study aims to contribute to understanding the mechanisms underlying the association between empowering motivational climate in physical education and social adaptation among senior high school students, and has important implications for interventions that aim at improving social adaptation among senior high school students. Through the quota sampling, 1,526 students (average age = 17 years, SD = 0.714 years) who came from Anhui Province and met the requirements participated and completed the Empowering Motivational Climate Questionnaire in Physical Education (EMCQ-PE), the Physical Education Engagement Scale (PEES-S), the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) (Chinese version), and the Adolescent Social Adaptation Assessment Questionnaire (ASAAQ). For data analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, structural equation model test, and bias-corrected percentile Bootstrap method were carried out in turn. The results showed that empowering motivational climate in physical education positively predicted social adaptation (β = 0.282, p < 0.01), empowering motivational climate in physical education positively predicted physical education engagement and emotional intelligence (β = 0.169, p < 0.01; β = 0.690, p < 0.01), physical education engagement positively predicted emotional intelligence and social adaptation (β = 0.591, p < 0.01; β = 0.058, p < 0.05), and emotional intelligence positively predicted social adaptation (β = 0.365, p < 0.01). Physical education engagement and emotional intelligence played a mediating role in empowering motivational climate in physical education and social adaptation, with a total mediating effect value of 0.251. This study shows that empowering motivational climate in physical education not only directly predicts social adaptation but also indirectly predicts social adaptation through the chain mediating effect of physical education engagement and emotional intelligence.

Abstract:This three-wave longitudinal study aimed to investigate whether the relationship between self-control and academic achievement, through mastery goals, was conditional on the nature of the teacher-student relationships. A total of 852 junior school students in China completed questionnaires about self-control, mastery goals, and teacher-student relationships. Academic achievement was obtained from the school. The analyses of moderated mediation effects based on structural equation modeling showed that teacher-student emotional conflict increased the negative effect of students' low self-control on academic achievement via mastery goals, whereas teacher-student emotional support failed to moderate this link. Thus, both mediating and moderating effects exist in the association between self-control and adolescents' academic achievement.

Abstract:Academic achievement reflects students' learning outcomes over a period of time and serves as a crucial gauge of student learning levels, as well as a focal point of societal interest. To investigate the impact of teacher support on academic achievement and its mechanism of action, this study introduces two mediating variables-academic self-efficacy and academic emotions-to construct a chain mediation model, and conducts a survey among 800 university students in Nanjing. The findings reveal that teacher support directly impacts academic achievement; academic self-efficacy mediates the effect of teacher support on academic achievement; academic emotions also mediate the effect of teacher support on academic achievement; and there is a chain mediating effect of academic self-efficacy and academic emotions in the relationship between teacher support and academic achievement. This research elucidates the relationship between teacher support and academic achievement, providing a theoretical foundation and practical recommendations for enhancing the academic performance of university students.

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement and the mediating role played by positive emotions and learning engagement in a sample of 497 middle school students from three middle schools in eastern China. Participants’ ages ranged from 12 to 15 years old, with a mean of 13.19 (SD = 0.688). The results show that: (1) positive emotions mediate the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement; (2) learning engagement also mediates the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement; and (3) positive emotions and learning engagement show a chain-mediating effect in the relationship between perceived teacher support and academic achievement. The findings not only reveal the mediating role of positive emotions and learning engagement between perceived teacher support and academic achievement but are also important for Chinese teachers to help students improve their academic achievement.

Abstract:In this study,the SCM,Class Play Scale,Peer Nomination Method was used to explore the moderating effect of peer group on the relationship between academic achievement and social behavior,peer acceptance, peer refusal based on 294 4-5th graders.The results showed:(1 )peer group in 4-5th graders was still in the initial formation stage,its density and centralization kept increasing with grade;(2 ) gender, academic achievement and social behavior were the main factors that affect the formation of peer groups;(3 ) individual academic achievement had positive predictive effects on the peer acceptance and pro-social behavior,and negative predictive effects on the peer refusal and withdrawal behavior; (4) on the relationship of peer acceptance and individual academic achievement,peer group's density and academic achievement had positive moderating effects,while the peer group's centralization was negative;peer group' s academic achievement had a positive moderating effect on the relationship of pro-social behavior and individual academic achievement.

Abstract:The relationship between peer support and academic engagement has been widely explored. However, scarce research examined this relationship for college students, and little was known about the underlying mechanism under this relationship. This study aimed to examine the effect of peer support on academic via the mediation of academic motivation and the moderator of academic anxiety. This model was examined among 4581 Chinese college students (mean age = 20.22, SD = 0.92) who completed the measurement of peer support, academic motivation, academic engagement and academic anxiety. Abstract:Totally 624 Chinese middle school students were participated in the present study, aiming to examine the correlations between teacher support, peer support, academic self-efficacy, positive emotions, and student engagement in physical education. Our findings demonstrated that student engagement was directly and significantly impacted by both teacher and peer support. Academic self-efficacy mediated the connection between teacher support, peer support, and student engagement, while positive emotions only mediated between teacher support and student engagement. Besides, teacher and peer support indirectly affected student engagement via the sequential mediating roles of academic self-efficacy and positive emotions, respectively. Academic self-efficacy exhibited a larger mediation impact between peer support and student engagement as compared to teacher support, while positive emotions had a relatively weaker mediating effect. These findings emphasize the value of peer and teacher support in encouraging student engagement in physical education. Moreover, enhancing students' academic self-efficacy and positive emotions in the classroom plays an essential role in building a positive cycle that encourages student participation in physical education.
