Abstract:BACKGROUND:The objective of this study was to examine the incidence of constipation and the risk factors for patients with ischemic stroke in acute and subacute stage. METHODS:In this retrospective cohort study, patients with acute and subacute ischemic stroke in the Department of Rehabilitation, First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine between 2019 and 2021 were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analysis were conducted using demographic characteristics, clinical evaluations, and stroke related complications, to explore the risk factors of constipation after stroke. RESULTS:Of the 222 patients with acute and subacute ischemic stroke, 128 (57.7 %) developed constipation. Univariate analysis revealed that pulmonary infection, NIHSS, ADL, KWST scores and nutritional status were significantly associated with post-stroke constipation (p < 0.05). Binomial logistic regression showed that NIHSS score is the independent risk factors of the poststroke constipation, and patients with NIHSS score >8.5 had higher risk for constipation. CONCLUSIONS:Current findings suggested a significant interaction between constipation and NIHSS score in stroke patients, providing new insights into therapeutic target for neural functional recovery among patients with acute and sub-acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract:Background: Chronic constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders throughout theworld. Many patients with severe constipation are resistant to pharmacological treatments and operations. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of multidisciplinary approach in patients with severe constipation through a long-term follow-up.Methods: Three hundred and ninety-one patients diagnosed with constipation according to Rome III criteria accepted multidisciplinary treatment or standard medical treatment between March, 2010 and April, 2013. The multidisciplinary constipation clinic in a tertiary care setting with dietary modification, exercise therapy, bowel habit adjustment, abdominal breathing exercise and drug therapy. Constipation symptoms, quality of life (SF-36), anxiety and depression were assessed before enrollment and after therapy. Results: Two hundred and eighty-eight subjects were treated by multidisciplinary treatment and 235 subjects complete the follow-up. The mean age of patients was 50.6 ± 16.0 years. 74.7% of patients were female. The mean duration of follow-up was 2.3 years. The weekly bowel movements was higher in the multidisciplinary group than the medication group(5 (3, 7) vs. 3.0 (2, 4), P<0.001). There was significant improvement on Bristol score (3 (3, 3) vs. 3 (2, 3), P=0.032), straining effort (4 (3, 5) vs. 8 (6.75, 9.0), P<0.001) and straining time(10 (7, 13) vs. 15 (10, 17), P=0.002). Significant improvement was also noted with multidisciplinary treatment on straining at defecations(31.1% vs. 59.8%, P=0.005), Hard stools(24.3% vs. 52.4%, P=0.005) and sensation of anorectal obstruction(8.5% vs. 35.4%, P<0.001). The proportion of patients with laxative/ enema use was lower in multidisciplinary group than the medication group(27.6% vs. 63.4%, P<0.001). Meanwhile, the score of quality of life (N=13) were significant higher compared with baseline. Multidisciplinary treatment also reduced score of anxiety (33.07±6.31 vs. 35.13±4.05, P=0.032)and depression(37.59±9.45 vs. 44.07±6.77, P<0.001)(N=44).Conclusion: This study suggest that multidisciplinary approach improves long-term constipation symptoms. Improvement in quality of life was also seen in patients attending themultidisciplinary constipation clinic.

Abstract:Background: Constipation causes substantial morbidity worldwide. Methods: This survey assessed constipation-related factors in Japan using the Japanese version of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Quality of Life (IBS-QOL-J) instrument. We also examined the relationship among laxative type, Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) scores, and treatment cost. Finally, we examined differences in satisfaction scores according to laxative type, treatment type, treatment cost, and BSFS score. Results: IBS-QOL-J was higher among those taking salt and/or irritation laxatives. Those paying >JPY 5000 (USD 50.00) had the lowest IBS-QOL-J. IBS-QOL-J was significantly lower among those with a BSFS score of 1 or 2 (severe constipation). Conclusions: This study's findings suggest that a variety of factors, including treatment type and cost, are associated with defecation satisfaction. Those who had hard stools, used multiple laxatives, or spent more on treatment were less satisfied. Future strategies should target therapies that do not require multiple laxatives with lower treatment costs. Adequate defecation with a small number of appropriate laxatives at minimal cost appears to improve defecation satisfaction. It is desirable to identify appropriate laxatives and improve dietary habits and exercise routines. It is also necessary to stop blindly increasing laxative usage and properly diagnose constipation disorders such as anatomical abnormalities other than functional constipation.

Clinical features and related factors of severe functional constipation

Abstract:Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics and related factors of severe functional constipation (FC) and explore the correlation between the severity of FC and colonic motility and anorectal function of patients.Methods From March 2010 to March 2012,patients with FC met Rome Ⅲ criteria were selected.A questionnaire survey was carried out and gastrointestinal transit test (GITT),anorectal manometry (ARM) and defecography were examined.The measurement data were analyzed by t test or rank sum and chi-square test was used for rate compare.Results Among 242 FC patients (male 69,female 173),179 cases (74.0％) were severe FC.The body mass index (BMI) of severe FC patients was (21.52±2.55) kg/m2,which was higher than that of non-severe FC patients ((20.72±2.46) kg/m2) and the difference was statistically significant (t=2.148,P=0.033).The rate of natural delivery in severe FC patients was 80.2％ (89/111),which was higher than that of non-severe FC patients (63.6％,21/33),and the difference was statistically significant (x2 =3.860,P=0.049).There were no significant differences in GITT,ARM and defecography between severe FC patients and non-severe FC patients (all P＞0.05).The weekly frequency of defecation of patients with abnormal GITT was 1.0 (0.5,2.0),which was less than that of patients with normal GITT (1.5(0.9,2.9)),and the difference was significant (Z=-2.612,P=0.009).Conclusions Severe FC is related to BMI and natural delivery.There is no correlation between anorectal function and severity of FC.The defecation frequency is correlated with colonic transit time.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background and aim</h3><p>Functional constipation (FC) is one of the functional bowel disorders with symptoms of constipation in the Rome IV criteria. This study aimed to examine the epidemiology of FC in a large‐scale survey of individuals undergoing a medical check‐up in Japan.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A total of 13,729 subjects who underwent a medical check‐up at MedCity21 between April 2018 and March 2019 were given a questionnaire that inquired about bowel habits. Among them, 10,658 subjects participated in this study, and FC was diagnosed based on the Rome IV criteria.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The number of subjects who fulfilled diagnostic criteria of FC was 220, and the prevalence of FC was 2.1%. Compared to subjects with non‐FC, those with FC were more complaining of abdominal bloating and distension, feeling stressed, getting annoyed, lack of motivation, fatigue upon waking, and feeling depressed. The risk of FC was significantly lower among subjects who drank alcohol more than 5 days a week, exercised for more than 30 min at least twice a week for more than 1 year, and were getting enough rest by sleeping, whereas it was significantly higher among women and subjects who were eating faster than other people.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>The prevalence of FC in Japanese subjects during a medical check‐up was relatively low compared with that in Western countries. Subjects with FC had troublesome symptoms, and it might be suggested that female sex, lack of regular exercise with moderate activity, insufficient rest by sleeping, and eating faster were a risk of FC.</p></section>

Abstract:Background Constipation is a common clinical problem with insufficient attention. Medication-emergent constipation is a rarely studied adverse reaction in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods In this descriptive study, we retrospectively investigated the prevalence of laxative use and its relationship with clinical characteristics in hospitalized OCD patients. A total of 51 OCD patients were included in the final analysis. Results The proportion of patients using laxatives was 31.4%, and the commonly used laxatives were phenolphthalein tablet, lactulose and congrongtongbian oral liquid (a patent herbal medicine). In the laxative group, hospital stays were longer when compared to the nonlaxative group. Moreover, the dose of paroxetine was higher in patients treated with laxatives than in those without laxative use. Correlation analysis indicated that laxative use was positively associated with hospital stays, as well as the dose of paroxetine. Conclusion The current study provided a preliminary picture of constipation and laxative use in hospitalized OCD patients. Close monitoring and treatment of constipation are recommended in OCD patients with pharmacotherapy.

Abstract:Background: Constipation is characterized by symptoms of straining, hard stool, difficult evacuation, and infrequent bowel movements. Online surveys provide valuable information about patients’ perspectives, symptoms, management, treatment satisfaction, and risk factors. Methods: This survey explored subject experiences involving 20 gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. In total, 20,099 respondents in seven countries with varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds participated. Post hoc analysis of ‘self-reported constipation’ and related symptoms experienced within the past 6 months and the last episode of constipation provided data on prevalence, demographics, frequency and duration of episodes and related symptoms, impact on quality of life (QoL), management with or without laxatives, and resulting treatment satisfaction. Results: In total, 10,425 subjects reported constipation within 6 months and 2637 at the last episode. Prevalence was highest in females and younger adults. Most subjects reported various coexisting GI symptoms. Almost 80% of 6865 episodes reported by 5337 subjects occurred every 2–3 months to every 2–3 weeks. A higher frequency of constipation correlated with a greater impact on QoL. On a 10-point scale, the mean impact was 6.4. More than 90% of respondents had episodes ranging from 1 day to 1 week. More than 90% took action; 16% used laxatives, of whom 80.3% were satisfied. Conclusion: Constipation, a highly prevalent disorder, spans cultures and socioeconomic classes. Its chronic recurrence has a significant impact on QoL, resulting in symptom self-management in >90% of subjects. Significantly higher satisfaction rates in subjects treated with than without laxatives reflect subjects’ reports that self-reported constipation can be treated effectively with laxatives.

Importance of Bowel Habits in Predicting Inadequate Bowel Preparation: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract:Objectives: Inadequate bowel preparation (BP) negatively affects the efficacy and quality of colonoscopy. Although constipation has already been reported as one of the most important predictors of inadequate BP, there is limited information on the relation between inadequate BP and bowel habits including constipation-related symptoms, medications, and severity of constipation. Methods: This single-center, prospective observational study was conducted between August 2019 and May 2020. All participants answered questionnaires regarding personal bowel habits and received low-volume polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid for outpatient colonoscopy. Severity of constipation was evaluated by constipation scoring system. Bowel preparation cleansing was evaluated using Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS). Potential predictors of inadequate BP were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression models. Results: Overall, 1054 patients were enrolled, of which, 105 (10%) had inadequate BP (total BBPS ≤ 6 or any segmental BBPS < 2). The risk of inadequate BP increased with constipation severity (P = 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that frequent straining (> 25% of defecations) (OR 2.09, 95% CI: 1.33-3.28) and chronic use of stimulant laxatives (OR 2.57, 95% CI: 1.59-4.17) were significant predictors of inadequate BP, among personal bowel habits. Conclusion: Frequent straining and chronic use of stimulant laxatives were predictors of inadequate BP. An intensified preparation regimen should be considered for severely constipated patients with straining and chronic use of stimulant laxatives.
Risk and main contributing factors for constipation in patients with gastrointestinal cancer: a multicenter cross-sectional study in China

Abstract:Background and objectives The purpose of this study is to determine the risk of constipation and to identify the significant risk factors for constipation in patients with gastrointestinal cancer using the Chinese version of the constipation risk assessment scale (CRAS-C), as well as to explore the complementary constipation risk factors in patients with gastrointestinal cancer, to improve the specificity of the CRAS-C in this population, and finally to provide a theoretical basis for constipation prevention. Research design and methods A cross-sectional study involving multiple centers was conducted. A total of 190 patients with gastrointestinal cancer completed surveys that included demographic information, defecation habits, and the CRAS-C. The mean, SD, median, maximum, minimum, frequency, and percentage were used as indicators for the constipation risk and significant risk factors. The t test and Chi-square tests were used to analyze constipation indicators in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Results The mean ( SD ) age of the 190 participants was 61.68 (12.35) years. The total CRAS-C mean ( SD ) score was 13.22 (4.69). Fifty-one patients (26.8%) scored lower than 11, who were at the low-risk level of constipation. One hundred thirty-nine patients (73.2%) scored 11 or above, who were at the high-risk level of constipation. The top 10 factors were insufficient liquid intake (81.1%), failure to consume bran products daily (78.9%), insufficient fiber intake (77.9%), antiemetics (74.7%), cytotoxic chemotherapy (52.6%), colorectal/abdominal diseases (42.6%), female (35.3%), opioid analgesics(26.8%), calcium channel blockers (16.3%), and endocrine disorders (14.2%). Chi-square test showed that constipating for most of the past 3 months, ascites and ECOG score were complementary constipation risk factors in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Conclusion The findings indicate that most gastrointestinal cancer patients were at a high risk of constipation. There are also several complementary constipation risk factors, and CRAS-C can be further revised in future studies to make it more specific in gastrointestinal cancer patients. Integrating CRAS into the pathway of constipation management, carrying out constipation risk screening for hospitalized cancer patients, and building systematic constipation prevention plan based on risk assessment are important to reduce the incidence of constipation in patients with gastrointestinal cancer and improve the quality of life.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the symptoms,management,and influencing factors of constipation in cancer patients.Methods From 21 April to 27 April 2010,67 cancer patients were admitted in our wards and received questionnaire investigation about constipation.Results Constipation was confirmed in 30 patients(44.77%).The influencing factors included use of antiemetic drugs,long bed time,less physical activity,use of pain killers,chemotherapy, and other drug-related risks.Conclusion Constipation frequently occurs in cancer patients due to a variety of factors, and therefore should be carefully managed.

Abstract:Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic idiopathic inflammation of the gut. Colonoscopy is the mainstay procedure for managing and monitoring IBD patients. However, many patients with IBD do not comply with routine or surveillance colonoscopies, and the underlying reasons have not been determined for Asian patients with IBD. Therefore, this study analyzed IBD patients' perceptions of bowel preparation and colonoscopy procedures and attitudes toward examination intervals, using a questionnaire. Methods This cross-sectional study included 94 patients with IBD (41 with Crohn’s disease and 53 with ulcerative colitis) presenting at one medical center between July 2020 and May 2022. The patients’ perceptions of the four components associated with the colonoscopy procedure (embarrassment, pain, use of bowel-cleansing agents, and stress) were assessed via a questionnaire. Patients were asked to indicate the frequency at which they had scheduled a colonoscopy and the frequency at which they desired to undergo the procedure. Results “Bowel cleansing” and “pain” were most uncomfortable during the colonoscopy procedure. Younger age and younger age at diagnosis were associated with a greater burden of bowel preparation and painful sensations. Regarding examination intervals, male patients were more compliant with colonoscopies within shorter timeframes than female patients. Additionally, younger patients and those diagnosed at an earlier age tended to prefer longer examination intervals. Conclusion This study provides insights into the perception of colonoscopy in Taiwanese patients with IBD. Our findings would promote the adherence to colonoscopy and facilitate early detection of major complications in high-risk and long-term IBD patients.

A study on the related influencing factors of the quality of bowel preparation and the compliance of middle-aged and elderly patients for colonoscopy

Abstract:Objective: Quality of bowel preparation and patient compliance are among the most important indicators to assess the quality of colonoscopy. To investigate the independent factors associated with the quality of bowel preparation in subjects undergoing colonoscopy and its impact on compliance. Methods: A total of 329 patient records were collected and were divided into an adequate bowel preparation group (272 cases) and an inadequate bowel preparation group (57 cases), or a compliant group (260 cases) and a non-compliant group (69 cases), based on bowel preparation quality or compliance. The quality of bowel preparation is evaluated using the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale. The comfort level of subjects during bowel preparation is assessed using the Kolcaba General Comfort Questionnaire (GCQ). Subjects' compliance was assessed according to a self-developed compliance questionnaire. Prediction analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with the quality of bowel preparation and compliance. Results: Age, bowel preparation duration, history of bowel inadequacy, and laxative dosage showed statistical differences between the adequate and inadequate bowel preparation groups (p < 0.05). Age, bowel preparation duration, and laxative dosage were independent influencing factors of bowel preparation quality. Correlation analysis showed that GCQ scores were significantly negatively correlated with age, bowel preparation duration, laxative dose, defecation frequency, and colonoscopy duration (r < 0, p < 0.05), and positively correlated with sleep duration (r > 0, p < 0.05). In addition, age, gender, bowel preparation duration, and laxative dosage showed statistical differences between the compliant and non-compliant groups (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, bowel preparation duration, and laxative dosage were independent influencing factors of bowel preparation compliance. Age and bowel preparation duration were independent influencing factors for bowel preparation adequacy and compliance. Conclusions: Age, bowel preparation duration, and laxative dosage are independent influencing factors for bowel preparation adequacy and compliance among patients undergoing colonoscopy at the First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. It is recommended that a one-day low-residue diet combined with a 2000 mL laxative dosage be used as the bowel preparation protocol for the general colonoscopy population.
An Age-Based Analysis of Outcome

Abstract:Background: Chronic constipation, a prevalent gastrointestinal complaint, exhibits rising incidence and diverse clinical implications, especially among the aging population. This study aims to assess colonoscopy performance in chronic constipation across age groups, comprehensively evaluating diagnostic yield and comparing results with average-risk controls. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 50,578 colonoscopy procedures performed over 12 years, including 5478 constipated patients. An average-risk control group (n = 4100) was included. Data extracted from electronic medical records covered demographics, operational aspects, and colonoscopy findings. The primary outcome measures included the diagnosis rate of colorectal cancer (CRC), polyp detection rate (PDR), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) diagnoses in constipated patients versus controls, with age-based and multivariate analyses. Results: Constipated patients exhibiting lower rates of adequate bowel preparation (92.7% vs. 85.3%; p < 0.001) and a lower cecal intubation rate. No significant variances between CRC and PDR were observed between constipated and controls, except for a potential of a slightly elevated CRC risk in constipated patients older than 80 (2.50% vs. 0% in controls; p = 0.07). Multivariate analysis demonstrated, across all age groups, that constipation did not confer an increased risk for CRC or polyp detection. Younger constipated patients exhibited a higher rate of IBD diagnoses (1.7% vs. 0.1% in controls; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Constipation did not confer an increased risk for CRC or polyps, among any age groups, except for a potential signal of elevated CRC risk in patients older than 80; additionally, it was associated with higher rates of IBD in younger patients.

Clinical and Medication Characteristics of Senior Hospitalized Patients with Chronic Constipation

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the clinical features, risk factors and drug uses of senior hospitalized patients with chronic constipation.METHODS:A total of 162 hospitalized patients aged 85 years and over at our hospital during the period of January-March 2012 conducted a questionnaire survey. There were 137 males and 25 females. And 112 cases of chronic constipation were diagnosed in accordance with the Rome III criteria. The survey included general condition, risk factors of constipation, spectrum of symptoms, associated symptoms, previous medication and medication for constipation after admission. The results were statistically analyzed by Logistic regression.RESULTS:Their average age was (90 ± 4) years old. And the total prevalence of chronic constipation was 69.1% (112/162). Logistic regression analysis showed that less activity (OR = 10.873) and diet (OR = 4.752) were the important risk factors. Defecation effort was the most common symptom (n = 85, 75.9%). A total of 88 cases (78.6%) took lactulose alone or lactulose plus other laxatives. The reasons of using lactulose were as follows: dietary restrictions (n = 31, 35.2%), aspiration prevention (n = 21, 23.9%) and poor efficacy of other laxatives (n = 36, 40.9%).CONCLUSIONS:Prevalence of constipation is high among senior hospitalized patients. Less activity and diet are the main risk factors. And lactulose should be a first-line therapy.

Constipation and the Quality of Life in Conservatively Treated Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Background: Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder that in general population is associated with worse health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The epidemiology of constipation has not been reliably determined in conservatively-treated CKD patients. We aimed to determine the prevalence of constipation and constipation-related symptoms in conservatively-treated CKD patients, to find factors associated with their altered prevalence ratio (PR), and to verify the associations between constipation and HRQoL. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 111 conservatively-treated CKD outpatients fulfilled questionnaires that included questions addressing HRQoL (SF-36v2®), constipation-related symptoms (The Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms questionnaire), the Bristol stool form scale (BSFS), Rome III criteria of functional constipation (FC), and frequency of bowel movement (BM). Results: Depending on the used definition, the prevalence of constipation was 6.6-28.9%. Diuretics and paracetamol were independently associated with increased PR of BSFS-diagnosed constipation (PR 2.86, 95% CI 1.28-6.37, P = 0.01) and FC (PR 2.67, 95% CI 1.07-6.64, P = 0.035), respectively. The most commonly reported symptoms were bloating (50.9%) and straining to pass a BM (42.7%). Abdominal discomfort (37.3%) was independently associated with worse scores in all analyzed HRQoL domains. In multiple regressions, FC and having <7 BM/week, but not BSFS-diagnosed constipation, were associated with lower scores in several HRQoL domains. Conclusions: Constipation and related symptoms are prevalent in CKD patients. FC and decreased frequency of defecation, but not BSFS-diagnosed constipation, are associated with worse assessment of HRQoL in conservatively-treated CKD patients.

Abstract:Background: Chronic constipation (CC) is a common disorder, and some patients may not respond to conventional therapy well. It is necessary to evaluate the patient comprehensively, including the perspectives of symptoms, predisposing factors, history of diagnosis and treatment and psychology in order to guide the treatment. Aims: To investigate the clinical characteristics of CC patients in Beijing area. Methods: CC outpatients from 10 hospitals in Beijing from March to May 2007 were enrolled. The treatment, symptom spectrum and psychology of 561 CC outpatients were investigated by questionnaire. Results: From March to May 2007, there were totally 73 923 person-times in GI clinics from 10 hospitals in Beijing, in which 3009 (4.1%) person-times were CC patients and of them 649 (21.6%) person-times were severe CC. 25.1% of CC patients were exposed to certain predisposing factors and 62.2% took laxatives without doctor's guidance. Straining was the most prevalent symptom (74.8%) and the most bothersome symptom (61.2%) in CC patients. 27.5% of CC patients had gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, while 41.2% had dyspepsia symptoms. 52.7% of CC patients suffered from anxiety and/or depression. Conclusions: CC is a common disorder in outpatients in GI clinics, among them many suffer from severe CC. In the symptom spectrum, straining is the most common and bothersome symptom. Gastroesophageal reflux and/or dyspepsia symptoms are also prevalent in CC patients. Many patients are susceptible to suffer from psychological disorders, such as anxiety and depression.

Abstract:Objectives To investigate the prevalence of constipation and its related risk factors in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients through a cross-section study in order to guide the prevention,treatment and education of constipation and to reduce constipation-related complications in PD patients.Methods Stable maintenance PD patients who received regular follow-up in PD center of Peking University People's Hospital from Jun.2015 to Dec.2015 were enrolled in this study.A questionnaire survey for constipation was used.Constipation was diagnosed by using the international standard of Rome Ⅲ.General information,drug usage and laboratory tests in these patients were collected.Related risk factors for constipation were analyzed by logistic regression analysis.Results ①A total of 143 PD patients (73 males;average age 59.15± 13.03 years) were enrolled in this study.Their PD duration was 37.14±27.79 months.② Among the 143 patients,50 patients (35％) had constipation and 61 patients (42.65％) took or used 1.69±0.92 types of laxatives.③ Logistic regression analyses showed that oral dose of atorvastatin (OR=1.807,95％ CI:1.021 ～ 1.157,P=0.009),Kamofsky score (OR=1.606,95％ CI:1.704～2.401,P=0.021) and age (OR=1.856,95％ CI:1.088～3.168,P=0.023) were independent risk factors for constipation in PD patients.Conclusions The prevalence of constipation in maintenance PD patients was high.Constipation was more likely to occur in patients who were elderly,had less activity,and took higher dose of atorvastatin.In addition to conventional education about the importance of constipation prevention,specific preventive and standardized treatment for constipation should be given for PD patients.
