Abstract:Drawing on the correspondence between spectral clustering, spectral dimensionality reduction, and the connections to the Markov chain theory, we present a novel unified framework for structural analysis of image database using spectral techniques. The framework provides a computationally efficient approach to both clustering and dimensionality reduction, or 2-D visualization. Within this framework, we can also infer the semantic degrees of the images, i.e. imagerank, which characterize the richness of semantics contained in the images. Some illustrative examples are discussed.

Abstract:The evaluation of communication link is crucial to wireless sensor networks. A link evaluation algorithm based on mean LQI and mean RSSI is proposed by analysis of a large mount of data collected from communication tests. This algorithm can improve the speed and precision of evaluation for communication link, and improve the reliability of wireless sensor networks. Then EPA based Frequency Hopping Metric(EPA-FHM) is presented, and applied to frequency-hopping algorithm. The performance of EPA-FHM is tested with the CC2420 as the platform, and the results show the reliability is improved.

Abstract:We present an exact, closed expression for the expected neutral Site Frequency Spectrum for two neutral sites, 2-SFS, without recombination. This spectrum is the immediate extension of the well known single site $\theta/f$ neutral SFS. Similar formulae are also provided for the case of the expected SFS of sites that are linked to a focal neutral mutation of known frequency. Formulae for finite samples are obtained by coalescent methods and remarkably simple expressions are derived for the SFS of a large population, which are also solutions of the multi-allelic Kolmogorov equations. Besides the general interest of these new spectra, they relate to interesting biological cases such as structural variants and introgressions. As an example, we present the expected neutral frequency spectrum of regions with a chromosomal inversion.

Abstract:With the existing Cognitive Radio Networks development, we present a sub-spectrum sensing scheme based on reputation, which takes advantage in energy consumption, security and fairness from spectrum sensing, data fusion and spectrum allocation by classifying users and spectrum bands reasonably. The analysis shows that the sub-spectrum sensing scheme can save energy and defense SSDF attacks effectively.
Bridgeness: A Local Index on Edge Significance in Maintaining Global Connectivity

Abstract:Edges in a network can be divided into two kinds according to their different roles: some enhance the locality like the ones inside a cluster while others contribute to the global connectivity like the ones connecting two clusters. A recent study by Onnela et al uncovered the weak ties effects in mobile communication. In this paper, we provide complementary results on document networks, that is, the edges connecting less similar nodes in content are more significant in maintaining the global connectivity. We propose an index called bridgeness to quantify the edge significance in maintaining connectivity, which only depends on local information of the network topology. We compare the bridgeness with content similarity and some other structural indices according to an edge percolation process. Experimental results on document networks show that the bridgeness outperforms content similarity in characterizing the edge significance. Furthermore, extensive numerical results on disparate networks indicate that the bridgeness is also better than some well-known indices on edge significance, including the Jaccard coefficient, degree product and betweenness centrality.
The Decentralized Structure of Collective Attention on the Web

Abstract:Background: The collective browsing behavior of users gives rise to a flow network transporting attention between websites. By analyzing the structure of this network we uncovered a nontrivial scaling regularity concerning the impact of websites. Methodology: We constructed three clickstreams networks, whose nodes were websites and edges were formed by the users switching between sites. We developed an indicator Ci as a measure of the impact of site i and investigated its correlation with the traffic of the site Ai both on the three networks and across the language communities within the networks. Conclusions: We found that the impact of websites increased slower than their traffic. Specifically, there existed a scaling relationship between Ci and Ai with an exponent gamma smaller than 1. We suggested that this scaling relationship characterized the decentralized structure of the clickstream circulation: the World Wide Web is a system that favors small sites in reassigning the collective attention of users.

Abstract:Reliable and efficient identification of spectrum access opportunities is crucial for cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs). A promising method to improve sensing reliability is CSS, where sensing data from multiple secondary users is combined to facilitate decision making. However, the performance of CSS algorithms in CRAHNs is limited by two challenges. First, the spectrum occupancy status in CRAHNs is spatially heterogeneous. Second, malfunctioning nodes or malicious attackers may falsify the true sensing results. To handle both these challenges, inspired by image segmentation in computer vision, we propose a novel graph-cut CSS algorithm. This algorithm is robust in the presence of false sensing data reports, computationally efficient (with polynomial worst case time complexity), and can be implemented distributively. Theoretically, it can be regarded as a new data fusion scheme that is generalized from classical likelihood ratio tests when sensing information is fully exploited, or from the majority fusion rule, when thresholded sensing information is utilized.

Abstract:As an intelligent wireless network, cognitive radio network has the ability of spectrum sensing, adaptive spectrum allocation and wireless spectrum management, but there are still some serious problems such as low sensing efficiency and security issues. To increase the efficiency of spectrum sensing and ensure the fairness and accuracy in sensing progress, we propose a sub-spectrum sensing scheme based on reputation. After that we extend the reputation in the scheme proposed to the spectrum allocation process. The simulation shows that our scheme can defense Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification (SSDF) attacks effectively, and increase the efficiency and fairness of the spectrum sensing.
Spectrum Allocations Algorithms in Wireless Networks

Abstract:All wireless devices rely on access to the radio frequency spectrum, which has been chronically regulated by static allocation policies. With recent fast growing of services and devices, the remaining spectrum available for future wireless services is being exhausted, known as the spectrum scarcity problem. The current fixed spectrum allocation scheme leads to significant spectrum white spaces (including spectral, temporal, and geographic), where many allocated spectrum blocks are used only in certain geographical areas and/or in brief periods of time. In this work, we design and analyze variant allocation algorithms for better spectrum utilization and study some fundamental bounds. We first propose algorithms for offline model, in which all requests are known. We also address the problems in online model, where allocation decision should be made when only a few spectrum requests are known. In the online model, we focus on two different cases. The first one assumes no statistic of future requests are known, and the second one assumes some statistic is known or can be learned. For all these models, we design efficient spectrum allocation methods and analytically prove most of them are asymptotically optimal. Our extensive simulation results also verify our theoretical conclusion.
Behavior Spectrum: an Effective Method for User's Web Access Behavior Monitoring and Measurement

Abstract:With the number of Internet users and applications continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to understand the users' behavior character for efficient network management and security monitoring. Web is one of the most popular applications, which can help users to obtain anything they want. In this paper, we propose a new framework to measure and monitor users' web access behavior character. Firstly, web services are divided into 12 types according to the content they provide. As user like to access different web services at different time instants, we proposed the behavior spectrum to describe the users' access character in an easily understandable way. Secondly, we employ three traffic features (number of connections, number of packets and number of bytes) to measure the intensity of users' access behavior. Based on the spectrums and features obtained, two kinds of user's access characters are analyzed: the characters at a particular time instant and the dynamic changing characters at continuous time points. Finally, we employ the Renyi entropy to cluster the users into different groups based on the spectrum and find the results are useful for network management. To verify the method, several actual traffic traces are collected from the Northwest Regional Center of CERNET (China Education and Research Network) and the experimental results prove the efficiency of the proposed methods.
Characterising Web Site Link Structure

Abstract:The topological structures of the Internet and the Web have received considerable attention. However, there has been little research on the topological properties of individual web sites. In this paper, we consider whether web sites (as opposed to the entire Web) exhibit structural similarities. To do so, we exhaustively crawled 18 web sites as diverse as governmental departments, commercial companies and university departments in different countries. These web sites consisted of as little as a few thousand pages to millions of pages. Statistical analysis of these 18 sites revealed that the internal link structure of the web sites are significantly different when measured with first and second-order topological properties, i.e. properties based on the connectivity of an individual or a pairs of nodes. However, examination of a third-order topological property that consider the connectivity between three nodes that form a triangle, revealed a strong correspondence across web sites, suggestive of an invariant. Comparison with the Web, the AS Internet, and a citation network, showed that this third-order property is not shared across other types of networks. Nor is the property exhibited in generative network models such as that of Barabasi and Albert.

Abstract:The probability of two nodes to be linked is related to their similarities in the network. Based on statistical inference, a network-structure similarity index, therefore, is proposed to find the potential links. This index quantifies the effects of the node communities on these links. And an algorithm for the index is also successfully designed. The experiments on several networks with ground-truth groups and temporal attributes reveal that two nodes are likely to be connected if some of their neighbor nodes are in common communities. The results from these experiments with tested networks, several of which cover more than a million nodes, show the reliability of the index and the advantage of its algorithm.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new scheme for blind distributed spectrum sensing (DSS), where multiple distributed cognitive radios (CRs) and a fusion center (FC) collaboratively detect the availability of a frequency band of interest under communications constraints without knowledge on the channels, signal power, or noise power. By following the energy detection and homogeneity test concepts, in the proposed scheme, the CRs make local binary decisions based on relative comparison of the total energy in a sampling window, particularly, whether a CR has the maximum total energy. With independent channels, the use of the maximum function generates desirable discrepancy among the CR decisions when the frequency band is in use. The introduction of the window size enables the balancing between communications costs and the performance. Closed-form results on the distribution of the CR decisions are obtained for Gaussian noises and signals. Representing Complex Networks Without Connectivity Via Spectrum Series

Abstract:We propose a new paradigm for describing complex networks in terms of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix and its submatrices. We show that a variety of basic node information, such as degree, clique, and subgraph centrality, can be calculated analytically. Moreover, we find that energy of spectrum series can uncover randomness and complexity of network structure. Interestingly, it presents an universal linear growth pattern with the growth of networks. Furthermore, the spectrum series of synthetic and real networks present clearly self-similarity characteristics for which the associated scaling exponents remain constant. Our work reveals that spectrum series representation will provide an alternative perspective for studying and understanding structure and function of complex networks rather than connectivity.

Abstract:Dynamic spectrum access has become a focal issue recently, in which identifying the available spectrum plays a rather important role. Lots of work has been done concerning secondary user (SU) synchronously accessing primary user's (PU's) network. However, on one hand. SU may have no idea about PU's communication protocols; on the other, it is possible that communications among PU are not based on synchronous scheme at all. In order to address such problems, this paper advances a strategy for SU to search available spectrums with asynchronous MAC-layer sensing. With this method, SUs need not know the communication mechanisms in PU's network when dynamically accessing. We will focus on four aspects: 1) strategy for searching available channels; 2) vacating strategy when PUs come back; 3) estimation of channel parameters; 4) impact of SUs' interference on PU's data rate. The simulations show that our search strategy not only can achieve nearly 50% less interference probability than equal allocation of total search time, but also well adapts to time-varying channels. Moreover, access by our strategies can attain 150% more access time than random access. The moment matching estimator shows good performance in estimating and tracing time-varying channels.
Linking via social similarity: The emergence of community structure in scale-free network

Abstract:We propose a simplified model which exhibits community structure, power-law degree distribution and high clustering. Every vertex is a social one with a social identity. The preferential attachment of Barabási-Albert model is incorporated with social similarity. When a newly added vertex makes a new link, it first selects a certain group of vertices with a probability by considering the social distances between it and all existing vertices. This is the linking mechanism via social similarity, simply known as the attraction of homogeneity. Then, in the group, a new edge links the new one to another one using preferential attachment. Via this mechanism, community structure emerges in scale-free networks. Theoretical calculation and implementing a community-finding algorithm both show that the measure of generated community structure increases with the strength of linking via social similarity. Furthermore, we introduce "triad formation" into our model to reproduce a high clustering. Our model is elegant for modeling large-scale social networks with community structure and has potential applications in studying dynamics on networks with community structure. ©2009 IEEE.
Indexing Linked Data in a Wireless Broadcast System with 3D Hilbert Space-Filling Curves

Abstract:Semantic technologies aim to facilitate machine-to-machine communication and are attracting more and more interest from both academia and industry, especially in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT). In this paper, we consider large-scale information sharing scenarios among mobile objects in IoT by leveraging semantic techniques. We propose to broadcast Linked Data on-air using RDF format to allow simultaneous access to the information and to achieve better scalability. We introduce a novel air indexing method to reduce the information access latency and energy consumption. To build air indexes, we firstly map RDF triples in the Linked Data into points in a 3D space and build B+-trees based on 3D Hilbert curve mappings for all of the 3D points. We then convert these trees into linear sequences so that they can be broadcast over a wireless channel. A novel search algorithm is also designed to efficiently evaluate queries against the air indexes. Experiments show that our indexing method outperforms the air indexing method based on traditional 3D R-trees.
Spectra of "Real-World" Graphs: Beyond the Semi-Circle Law

Abstract:Many natural and social systems develop complex networks, that are usually modelled as random graphs. The eigenvalue spectrum of these graphs provides information about their structural properties. While the semi-circle law is known to describe the spectral density of uncorrelated random graphs, much less is known about the eigenvalues of real-world graphs, describing such complex systems as the Internet, metabolic pathways, networks of power stations, scientific collaborations or movie actors, which are inherently correlated and usually very sparse. An important limitation in addressing the spectra of these systems is that the numerical determination of the spectra for systems with more than a few thousand nodes is prohibitively time and memory consuming. Making use of recent advances in algorithms for spectral characterization, here we develop new methods to determine the eigenvalues of networks comparable in size to real systems, obtaining several surprising results on the spectra of adjacency matrices corresponding to models of real-world graphs. We find that when the number of links grows as the number of nodes, the spectral density of uncorrelated random graphs does not converge to the semi-circle law. Furthermore, the spectral densities of real-world graphs have specific features depending on the details of the corresponding models. In particular, scale-free graphs develop a triangle-like spectral density with a power law tail, while small-world graphs have a complex spectral density function consisting of several sharp peaks. These and further results indicate that the spectra of correlated graphs represent a practical tool for graph classification and can provide useful insight into the relevant structural properties of real networks.
