Abstract:This study evaluated 14 GC-measurable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 4 pesticides in fifty baby food samples commercialized in Brazil. Gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry was used to conduct the analyses. The use of quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method and dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) achieved suitable performance characteristics for both methods. For the pesticides determination, recovery rates ranged from 87% to 120% and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 2–10 µg kg−1. For the PAHs analysis method, recoveries between 71% and 120% were obtained. Limit of quantification was established at 0.1 µg kg−1 for the different compounds. Additionally, good linearity within the analyzed range through matrix-matching calibration has been observed for both methodologies, demonstrating the suitability of proposed method for baby food control. As a result, 24% of the analyzed samples contained pesticide residues quantified or detected at concentrations ranging from below LOQ to 4.1 μg kg−1, while PAHs were not detected in any sample. These findings underscore the necessity for increased vigilance in safeguarding infant food, as even low concentrations of pesticide residues pose a risk in baby food. Furthermore, in Brazil, there are scarce studies conducted to analyze these contaminants in baby foods. We recommend conducting monitoring system to assess the potential health risks for babies resulting from exposure to these contaminants through food.

Abstract:A new analytical method was developed to simultaneously determine residues of 109 pesticides (including isomers) in the foods of animal origin. Acetonitrile was selected for accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) for effectively extracting the pesticides from the fatty samples. The cleanup was performed with an automated gel permeation chromatography (GPC) cleanup system. The prepared samples were analysed with GC–MS in the selected ion monitoring mode (SIM) using one target and two qualitative ions for each analyte. Chlorpyrifos-d10 was used as an internal standard. The lowest limit of detection was 0.3μgkg−1 for some pesticides. The recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) were checked by spiking untreated samples with pesticides at 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2mgkg−1. The average recoveries of most pesticides were from 62.6% to 107.8%. The precision values expressed as RSD were all ⩽20.5% (n=6). Good linearity (r⩾0.99) was observed between 0.05 and 1.5μgmL−1.
Comprehensive assessment of clean-up strategies for optimizing an analytical multi-method to determine pesticides and mycotoxins in Brazilian medicinal herbs using QuEChERS-LC-TQ-MS/MS

Abstract:The use of medicinal herbs has increased significantly. However, the presence of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in medicinal herbs has generated constant discussion and concern among regulatory agencies. Developing and validating an analytical method for determining pesticides and mycotoxins in medicinal plants is challenging due to the naturally occurring substances in these plants. The purpose of this work was to develop and to optimize a sensitive, accurate, precise, effective QuEChERS method for simultaneous determination of over 160 pesticide and mycotoxin residues in complex medicinal plant matrices using LC-TQ-MS/MS. A comprehensive comparison of clean-up procedures and other parameters was conducted to achieve this goal. The validation procedure was performed according to SANTE 11312/2021. More polar analytes, such as acephate, methamidophos and omethoate, presented a higher negative matrix effect in both Melissa officinalis L. and Malva sylvestris L. However, other molecules, such as spirodiclofen, showed a 24% signal enhancement in M. officinalis and a 46% signal suppression in M. sylvestris, indicating that a representative matrix-matched calibration would lead to inaccurate quantification of the analyte. Accuracy and precision were satisfactory according to SANTE 11312/2021 for 157 pesticide residues and mycotoxins in M. officinalis and for 152 molecules in M. sylvestris. LOQs at 10 µg kg-1 were achieved for 117 pesticides in M. officinalis and 99 pesticides in M. sylvestris. Among the mycotoxins, all four aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and G2) presented LOQs of 5 µg kg-1, and ochratoxin A had an LOQ of 10 µg kg-1 in M. officinalis. The same LOQ values were shown for these mycotoxins in M. sylvestris, except for aflatoxin B2 and ochratoxin A, which had LOQs of 20 µg kg-1. Moreover, in Southern Brazil, there has been no previous study on mycotoxin and pesticide contamination in medicinal herbs. Therefore, the application of this method was assessed through the analysis of forty-two real samples. Imidacloprid was found in M. officinalis, and methyl pirimiphos was found in M. sylvestris. The proposed method not only serves as a helpful tool for routine monitoring but also offers a basis for further research on risk assessment and control in food safety.
Determination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in breast milk from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, using a modified QuEChERS method and gas chromatography-negative chemical ionisation-mass spectrometry

Abstract:The food chain is the main source of exposure to humans by organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) due to the bioaccumulation. Breast milk can accumulate OCPs, so this matrix is often used as an environmental bioindicator. The currently available methods for the determination of several OCPs and metabolites in breast milk involve, in general, multi-step sample preparation and quantification techniques with low selectivity, high cost and much time and labour. Thus, a fast and efficient method based on sample preparation using the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method combined with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry with negative chemical ionisation (GC-NCI-MS) was developed, validated and applied for determination of 16 OCPs and metabolites in breast milk samples. The extract was cleaned by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) using MgSO4 and C18, evaporated in a Turbovap® system, redissolved and analysed by GC-NCI-MS. The method was validated showing acceptable recoveries (72–118%) and precision (RSD <19%). Method limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.75 to 7.5 ng g−1 and from 2.5 to 25 ng g−1 lipid, respectively. The method was successfully applied to 20 samples of breast milk from different regions of the Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, of which 75% contained residues below the LOQs.

Abstract:A screening method was developed for the multi-residue analysis of pesticides in baby foods using QuEChERS and UHPLC-Q-TOF. For sample preparation, the two-buffered versions of QuEChERS and different purification procedures were studied. False negatives and false positives were determined using different thresholds mentioned in the literature on the retention time and accurate mass measurement detection criteria. To reach unequivocal identification, the fragmentation spectra of the pesticides were used. The information-dependant-acquisition (IDA) mode was optimized with a precursor-inclusion list (PIL) to limit the loss of MS/MS data. Then, the experimental fragmentation spectra were compared to those included in a homemade library, by assessing different MS/MS algorithms and similarity scores. The optimised method was validated according to SANTE/11312/2021 guidelines. 95% and 73% of the pesticides presented a screening detection limit (SDL) and a limit of identification (LOI) ≤ 0.1 mg.kg-1. One plasticizer was found in the investigated samples by a suspect-screening approach.
Exploring miniaturized sample preparation approaches combined with LC-QToF-MS for the analysis of sulfonamide antibiotic residues in meat- and/or egg-based baby foods

Abstract:Miniaturized and simplified sample preparation methods with reduced consumption of chemicals and non-halogenated solvents are presented for the determination of 12 sulfonamides in baby foods. Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used for the identification and quantification of the compounds based on the acquisition of full spectrum at high resolution with accurate mass for precursor and its fragment ions. Three miniaturized protocols based on QuEChERS, salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction or low-temperature cleanup were evaluated regarding the extraction efficiency and removal capability of matrix co-extractives. All approaches achieved satisfactory recoveries (70.0-120.0%); however, the miniaturized QuEChERS distinguished by lower co-extractives content in the final extract providing lower matrix effects. Thus, the performance characteristics of the miniaturized QuEChERS were established using different matrices: beef-, egg yolk- and vegetable-based baby food or chicken- and vegetable-based baby food, in compliance with the Codex Alimentarius Commission guidelines. The target compounds were investigated in 30 commercial baby foods.
[Determination of multi-veterinary drug residues in complementary foods for infants and young children by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry]

Abstract:Special attention must be paid to children and infants because health issues stemming from a poor immunologic system and low weight make them a vulnerable risk group. Complementary foods for infants and young children, which are a class of special dietary foods, are essential transitional foods for infants from lactation to adaptation to ordinary food. Some complementary foods for infants and young children are of animal origin such as fish, meat, and the liver, which may contain veterinary drug residues. Veterinary drugs are usually small-molecular-weight chemicals that are essential for treating infections, increasing production, and improving animal husbandry. However, abuse of these substances can provoke transfer to the food chain, leading to negative consequences for humans, especially infants and young children. For a more comprehensive safety supervision of infant supplementary foods, a method based on ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed and used for the determination of 50 antibiotics and antivirals (grouped into six categories: fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, macrolides, nitroimidazoles, chloramphenicols, and antivirals) in complementary foods for infants and young children. The matrix of complementary foods for infants and young children is complex and contains a large number of proteins and lipids, which poses a serious challenge for sample pretreatment. The Captiva EMR-Lipid solid-phase extraction (SPE) column is a new type of product that allows for selective and efficient lipid/matrix removal without negatively affecting the recovery of the analyte. In this study, samples were extracted with acidified acetonitrile and then purified using a Captiva EMR-Lipid SPE column. The target analytes were separated on a BEH C18 column by gradient elution using acetonitrile and water containing 0.1% (v/v) formic acid as the mobile phases. MS detection was performed with an electrospray source in the positive and negative modes in the multireaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The ion spray voltages were set at 5500 V and -4500 V in the positive and negative modes, respectively. The source temperature for both the ionization modes was set to 500 ℃. Instrumental parameters such as collision energy and declustering potential were optimized. The samples were quantified using the external standard method with matrix calibration curves to reduce the influence of the matrix effect on the quantitative results.The results showed that the 50 veterinary drug residues had good linear relationships in the range of 0.5 to 50 μg/L, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.995. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 0.03-0.70 μg/kg and 0.09-2.33 μg/kg, respectively. The average recoveries for all the compounds under different matrices ranged from 64.37% to 119.3% at spiked levels of 5 μg/kg and 50 μg/kg, with relative standard deviations of less than 15%. Compared to QuEChERS, this method has a better purification effect. The recoveries of the 50 veterinary drugs extracted by this method were also much higher than those in the case of QuEChERS. This method was applied to the detection of 14 domestic and six imported infant supplementary foods. Sulfaquinoxaline, sulfamethazine, and tilmicosin were detected in one imported meat-based baby food. With its simple operation, high sensitivity and accuracy, and low sample quantity consumption, this method is suitable for the determination of multiveterinary drug residues in complementary foods for infants and young children. This study provides an effective analysis method for risk monitoring and troubleshooting of complementary foods for infants and young children, which is of great significance in ensuring the healthy growth of the next generation.
New analytical method for chlorpyrifos determination in biobeds constructed in Brazil: Development and validation

Abstract:A quick and efficient method was optimized and validated to determine chlorpyrifos in biobeds using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). Chlorpyrifos was extracted from the matrix with 30 mL of a mixture of acetone, phosphoric acid and water 98:1:1 (v/v/v). After homogenization, centrifugation and filtration, 125 µL of the extract was evaporated and reconstituted in 5 mL of methanol acidified with 0.1% acetic acid. Validation was performed by studying analytical curve linearity (r2), estimated instrument and method limits of detection and limits of quantification (LODi, LODm, LOQi and LOQm, respectively), accuracy, precision (expressed as relative standard deviation, RSD), and matrix effect. Accuracy and precision were determined from the amount of pesticide recovered from biobed blank samples (i.e. without pesticide residue) spiked with chlorpyrifos at three different concentrations (2, 10 and 50 mg kg-1), with seven replicates at each concentration. For all three concentrations studied, the average recovery values obtained were between 96 and 115% with RSD values lower than 20%. The validated LOQ obtained was 2 mg kg-1 (from recovery studies) and the matrix effect observed was lower than ±20%, which demonstrated that there was neither considerable suppression nor enhancement of the analyte signal. The biobed system efficiently degraded chlorpyrifos in both 1) simulation of accidental spillage and 2) application of diluted pesticide solution. In the latter case, all the values obtained at the final sampling time (14 months) were below the validated LOQm.
Fast supercritical fluid extraction and high-resolution gas chromatography with electron-capture and flame photometric detection for multiresidue screening of organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides in Brazil's medicinal plants

Abstract:A description is given of a rapid and environmentally friendly method to determine organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticide multiresidues--malathion, methidathion, fenitrothion, fenthion, parathion-ethyl, parathion-methyl, lindane, hexachlorobenzene, chlorothalonil, tetradifon, alpha-endosulfan, beta-endosulfan and dieldrin-in Passiflora alata Dryander and pasiflora edulis Sims. f. flavicarpa Deg. leaves by supercritical fluid extraction and high-resolution gas chromatography with electron-capture and flame photometric detection (HRGC-ECD/FPD). The mild extraction conditions [pure CO2; 100 bar (1 bar = 10(5) Pa) and 40 degrees C (p = 0.62 g/ml); 5 min static+10 min dynamic extraction time; ODS trap and elution with 1 ml n-hexane at 2 ml/min] allow for direct analysis by HRGC-ECD/FPD with no prior cleaning procedure. The method provides. in accordance with the validation criteria of the European Pharmacopoeia, analytical results that are similar or even better than the official procedures, and is simpler, faster and cheaper. Mean recoveries of 69.8-107.1% were obtained, with 1.4-14.7% reproducibility (RSD). The method was applied to analyse commercial samples of Passiflora L. from Brazil. Twenty-three percent of the samples showed the presence of the organochlorine or organophosphorus pesticide residue investigated.
Improved efficiency of ion trapping time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the analysis of pesticide residues and mycotoxins at trace levels in baby food

Abstract:The analysis of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in baby food demands exceptionally low limits of quantitation, necessitating the use of highly sensitive instruments capable of conducting trace analyses. High-resolution instruments typically fail to detect such low levels. However, the latest advancements in liquid time-of-flight technology, when coupled with ion trapping, enable ion enrichment, thereby improving detection levels. This allows for the analysis of these substances at low concentration levels, benefiting from enhanced mass accuracy. Additionally, the use of mass accuracy data helped eliminate matrix interferences, thereby enabling high-confidence identification. We developed a multi-residue method to analyse 219 pesticide residues and 9 mycotoxin residues in baby food matrices. Utilizing a QuEChERS-based extraction method, the samples were then analysed using an LC-Zeno® trap QTOF with mass window screening acquisition. For pesticides, the limit of quantitation was 0.001–0.003 mg/kg for 81 % of the evaluated compounds, 0.005 mg/kg for 13 %, 0.010 mg/kg for 4 % and 0.020–0.030 for 2 %; good linearities were obtained at these levels. Apparent recoveries were evaluated at 0.003, 0.005, and 0.010 mg/kg. At the lowest recovery level, 93 % of compounds showed recoveries between 70 and 120 %. The rest of the compounds were in the range of 63–129 %, with relative standard deviation values below 20 %. For mycotoxins, the limits of quantitation ranged from 0.0001 to 0.100 mg/kg, with matrix-matched concentrations assessed within this range. Recoveries were evaluated at low concentration range (0.001–0.003 mg/kg) and high range (0.020–0.050) with apparent recoveries values between 92 and 140 %. Finally, a total of 31 commercial baby food samples were analysed using this method. The results indicated that 16 samples contained pesticide residues, while two samples were found to have mycotoxins.

Intravascular ultrasound guided Holmium:YAG laser recanalization of occluded arteries

Abstract:Current angioplasty devices are limited by arterial wall dissection and perforation, and by early recurrence from inadequate debulking of lesions. This study evaluated intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) as guidance for concentric laser recanalization of arterial occlusions. Twelve, 2–4‐cm‐long canine iliac artery occlusions were treated at 2 weeks (organizing thrombus) to 12 weeks (firm fibrous lesions) using a Holmium:YAG laser (2,100 nm wavelength) in free running mode, FRM, (250 μsec pulse, 5 Hz), n = 9; and Q‐switched mode, QSM (200 ns pulse, 6 Hz), n = 3. A 200 μm (n = 2) or 600 μm (n=10) optic fiber was centered in the artery coaxial to a 5Fr rotating A scan IVUS probe. The fiber was positioned in the center of the artery distal to the lesion and slowly advanced through the obstruction. In 8 occlusions the same fiber was used as a guide wire for passage of either a 1.6‐mm‐(n=2) and/or 3.0‐mm (n=6) diameter multifiber catheter (19 × 100 and 19 × 200 μm fibers, respectively) using FRM energy to further debulk the lesion. In all cases, IVUS guidance enabled concentric initial recanalization of occlusions, although 3 vessel perforations resulted from fiber deviation off the center of the lumen at a distance of 2 to 4 cm from the IVUS imaging element. Both QSM and FRM modes ablated tissue, with FRM modes producing more tissue fragmentation and thermal effect. IVUS images accurately diagnosed the location of lesions compared to angioscopic views and pathologic analysis of the specimens. This study suggests that IVUS guided laser energy may enable initial concentric re‐canalization of arterial occlusions if adequate tissue removal can be accomplished to provide continuous IVUS imaging as the re‐canalization proceeds. © 1992 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
A preliminary study of simultaneous veterinary drug and pesticide residues in eggs produced in organic and cage-free alternative systems using LC–MS/MS

Abstract:In this study, a preliminary food quality and safety assessment was performed on organic and cage-free egg samples marketed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that were analyzed concerning veterinary drug and pesticide residues using high performance and ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The polyether ionophore salinomycin was detected in two organic egg samples (25% of the organic samples), one with an estimated concentration even higher than the maximum permissible amount of 3 µg kg−1 established for conventional eggs by the European Commission. The other sample presented a concentration higher than the limit of detection of 0.3 µg kg−1, but lower than the lowest calibration level of 1.5 µg kg−1. Regarding pesticide residues, spiroxamine, pirimiphos, mephosfolan and pyraclostrobin were identified at residual levels below the lowest calibration level of 4.5 µg kg−1, except for one organic egg sample, presenting 8.3 µg kg−1 of spiroxamine. Spiroxamine was identified in 62% of the assessed samples. These findings indicate that non-conformities were found even with a limited number of samples, impacting the confidence in the quality of organic and cage-free alternative systems in egg production. The hazard index (HI) approach demonstrated that chemical food safety might be at risk, since a mixture of the detected analytes may pose a risk for children up to 27 kg, through egg consumption.
Development of a highly sensitive method based on QuEChERS and GC-MS/MS for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in infant foods

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental contaminants that can be found in various food products, including those intended for infants. Due to their potential health risks, it is crucial to develop sensitive analytical methods for the accurate determination of PAHs in infant foods. This study describes the development and validation of a highly sensitive method for the quantification of European PAH markers, namely benzo[a]pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, and benzo[b]fluoranthene, using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), in baby food samples. The first step was the optimization of the sample preparation procedure, performed using different methods based on the QuEChERS approach, also testing different extraction solvents. Several factors such as extraction efficiency, selectivity, and recovery were evaluated to choose the most effective procedure for sample preparation. Furthermore, the GC-MS/MS method was optimized, evaluating parameters such as linearity, sensitivity, accuracy, and robustness using spiked infant food samples. The method demonstrated excellent linearities with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.999 over a wide concentration range, and limits of detection and limits of quantification in the range 0.019-0.036 μg/kg and 0.06-0.11 μg/kg, respectively. Extraction recoveries were between 73.1 and 110.7%, with relative standard deviations always lower than 8%. These findings are compliant with the indications of the European Commission (Reg. 836/2011). To assess the applicability of the method to official control activities, a survey was conducted on commercially available infant food products. Four markers were determined in commercial samples belonging to different food categories for infants and young children. The outcome of this monitoring showed that PAH contamination, in all samples, was below the quantification limits. In conclusion, the developed GC-MS/MS method provides a highly sensitive and reliable approach for the determination of PAHs in baby foods. The optimized sample preparation, instrumental parameters, and validation results ensure accurate quantification of 4 PAHs even at trace levels. This method could contribute to the assessment of PAH exposure in infants and it could support regulatory efforts to ensure the safety and quality of infant food products with regular monitoring.
Improving Analytical Performance for Pesticides and Mycotoxins Determination in Brazilian Table Olives: One Extraction and One Analysis

Abstract:This paper describes an extensive study in which a multiclass QuEChERS based approach was optimized for determination of 150 pesticides and 7 mycotoxins in table olives. Three versions of QuEChERS were evaluated and compared (unbuffered, citrate and acetate buffering). A combination of EMR-Lipid cartridges and liquid nitrogen or freezer freezing out were tested for clean-up of the oily olive extracts. Analysis of the extracts were performed by LC-MS/MS triple quadrupole. The best results were achieved using acetate QuEChERS with liquid nitrogen for clean-up. For validation, organic olives were ground and spiked at 4 concentrations with pesticides and mycotoxins (n=5). The linearity of the calibration curves was assessed by analyzing calibration standards of 7 concentrations which were prepared separately in acetonitrile and in blank olive extract (n=5). The validation study demonstrated that the calculated coefficient of determination was ≥ 0.99 for 144 pesticides and 6 mycotoxins, when the calibration curves were prepared in matrix extract, showing satisfactory linearity. Matrix effects were within the range of ± 20% for only 46 pesticides and one mycotoxin. Then, to ensure reliable quantification, calibration standards had to be matrix-matched. In accuracy experiments 138 pesticides and 6 mycotoxins presented recoveries from 70 to 120% and RSD ≤ 20% for at least 2 of the 4 spike concentrations evaluated, being successfully validated. The integrated QuEChERS and LC-MS/MS method meet MRL for 11 of the 21 pesticides regulated for olives in Brazil and 132 pesticides which are regulated in the EU law. Eleven commercial table olive samples were analyzed and 4 of them tested positive for pesticides. All the positive samples violate the Brazilian law and one sample violates also the European law.

Abstract:A simple and rapid multiresidue method for the determination of different veterinary drug residues in meat-based baby food (MBF) and powdered milk-based infant formulae (PMIF) has been developed. The method involves an extraction procedure based on buffered QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) methodology, without any further clean-up step, followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The method has been validated in two baby food matrices (MBF and PMIF) at three different concentration levels, obtaining suitable recoveries and precision (inter and intra-day precision) values. Quantification was carried out using matrix-matched standard calibration. Furthermore, the decision limit (CCα) and the decision capability (CCβ) were evaluated, ranging from 0.5 to 16.2μg/kg and from 1.2 to 22.4μg/kg, respectively. Finally, the method was applied to the analysis of several kinds of baby food samples and traces of some veterinary drugs were detected.

Abstract:A new analytical method was developed and validated for simultaneous analysis of 333 pesticide and veterinary drug residues in baby food. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize a generic extraction method. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI Q-Orbitrap) was used for the separation and detection of all the analytes. The method was validated by taking into consideration the guidelines specified in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC and SANCO/12571/2013. The extraction recoveries were in a range of 79.8-110.7%, with coefficient of variation <8.3%. The 333 compounds behave dynamic in the range 0.1-1000μgkg(-1) concentration, with correlation coefficient >0.99. The limits of detection for the analytes are in the range 0.01-5.35μgkg(-1). The limits of quantification for the analytes are in the range 0.01-9.27μgkg(-1). This method has been successfully applied on screening of pesticide and veterinary drugs in ninety-three commercial baby food samples, and tilmicosin, fenbendazole, tylosin tartrate and thiabendazole were detected in some samples tested in this study. The present study is very useful for fast screening of different food contaminants.

Abstract:Beef meat is an important food that can be contaminated by pesticides. This study aimed to optimize a multiresidue method for identification and quantification of pesticides in beef meat by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection (LC-MS). The extraction and clean-up procedures were adapted from the QuECHERS method. From the 188 analytes tested, the method was validated as qualitative method for 19 compounds and as quantitative method for 152 compounds. The results were satisfactory, yielding coefficients of variation of less than 20% and recoveries ranging from 70% to 120% and expanded uncertainty of less than 50%. The quantification limit was typically 10 µg kg-1 (but 25 µg kg-1 for 12 of the compounds) and the detection limit was 5.0 µg kg-1. Thirty-two real samples of commercialized beef meat were analyzed without any residual pesticide being found. Thus, the results showed that the multiresidue method for detecting 171 pesticides, using adapted QuECHERS for extraction and LC-MS for detection, is suitable for analyzing beef meat.

Abstract:A new method for the quantification of four aflatoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2) in baby food samples is described herein. In this method, the extraction/cleanup step was performed by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a sorbent material in a dispersive solid phase procedure. In sequence, these mycotoxins were quantified via liquid chromatographic coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The method was fully validated according to the EC/657/2002 and SANCO/12571/2013 directives. Adequate values were obtained for all figures of merit, mainly veracity (recoveries: 75.8 to 120.6%) and quantification limits (LOQs: 60.0 to 560.0 ng kg-1), with no noticeable matrix effects. The method was tested in real samples (n = 4) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was detected in just one of them. Finally, this analytical procedure has an evident potential to be applied to analyze aflatoxins (and other mycotoxins) in distinct types of complex samples.
