Abstract:How migratory birds can find the right way when navigating over thousands of miles is an intriguing question that has greatly interested researchers in both the fields of biology and physics for centuries. There are several putative proposals that sound intuitively plausible; all remain contested so far because these hypothetical models of magnetoreceptors that sense the geomagnetic field need either extremely high sensitivity or humankind-like intelligence to guide. Here we explore theoretically whether birds can navigate to their destination through an entirely new scenario to sense the geomagnetic field. Our proposal is based on separate peaks of the resonance-fluorescence spectrum of a four-level system derived from the ferric sulfide cluster that exists in a MagR/Cry protein complex (Drosophila CG8198) of migratory birds. As the separation of spectral peaks contains information about the geomagnetic field at both the current location and the birthland, the change of such separation cues the bird to choose the right direction to move, and double-resonance emerges once it has arrived at its destination. Our theoretical mechanism can explain previous experiments on the disorientation of migratorybirds caused by oscillating magnetic field naturally and more precisely. This work provides insight into explaining migratory navigation and motivates possible humanmade practical devices.

Abstract:Migrating animals perform astonishing seasonal movements by orienting and navigating over thousands of kilometres with great precision. Many migratory species use cues from the sun, stars, landmarks, olfaction and the Earth's magnetic field for this task. Among vertebrates, songbirds are the most studied taxon in magnetic‐cue‐related research. Despite multiple studies, we still lack a clear understanding of when, where and how magnetic cues affect the decision‐making process of birds and hence, their realised migratory behaviour in the wild. This understanding is especially important to interpret the results of laboratory experiments in an ecologically appropriate way. In this review, we summarise the current findings about the role of magnetic cues for migratory decisions in songbirds. First, we review the methodological principles for orientation and navigation research, specifically by comparing experiments on caged birds with experiments on free‐flying birds. While cage experiments can show the sensory abilities of birds, studies with free‐flying birds can characterise the ecological roles of magnetic cues. Second, we review the migratory stages, from stopover to endurance flight, in which songbirds use magnetic cues for their migratory decisions and incorporate this into a novel conceptual framework. While we lack studies examining whether and when magnetic cues affect orientation or navigation decisions during flight, the role of magnetic cues during stopover is relatively well studied, but mostly in the laboratory. Notably, many such studies have produced contradictory results so that understanding the biological importance of magnetic cues for decisions in free‐flying songbirds is not straightforward. One potential explanation is that reproducibility of magnetic‐cue experiments is low, probably because variability in the behavioural responses of birds among experiments is high. We are convinced that parts of this variability can be explained by species‐specific and context‐dependent reactions of birds to the study conditions and by the bird's high flexibility in whether they include magnetic cues in a decision or not. Ultimately, this review should help researchers in the challenging field of magnetoreception to design experiments meticulously and interpret results of such studies carefully by considering the migration ecology of their focal species.

Abstract:The Earth’s magnetic field is one of several natural cues, which migratory birds can use to derive directional (“compass”) information for orientation on their biannual migratory journeys. Moreover, magnetic field effects on prominent aspects of the migratory programme of birds, such as migratory restlessness behaviour, fuel deposition and directional orientation, implicate that geomagnetic information can also be used to derive positional (“map”) information. While the magnetic “compass” in migratory birds is likely to be based on radical pair-forming molecules embedded in their visual system, the sensory correlates underlying a magnetic “map” sense currently remain elusive. Behavioural, physiological and neurobiological findings indicate that the sensor is most likely innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve and based on magnetic iron particles. Information from this unknown sensor is neither necessary nor sufficient for a functional magnetic compass, but instead could contribute important components of a multifactorial “map” for global positioning. Positional information could allow migratory birds to make vitally important dynamic adaptations of their migratory programme at any relevant point during their journeys.
Simulation experiment to test strategies of geomagnetic navigation during long-distance bird migration

Abstract:Abstract Background Different theories suggest birds may use compass or map navigational systems associated with Earth’s magnetic intensity or inclination, especially during migratory flights. These theories have only been tested by considering properties of the Earth’s magnetic field at coarse temporal scales, typically ignoring the temporal dynamics of geomagnetic values that may affect migratory navigational capacity. Methods We designed a simulation experiment to study if and how birds use the geomagnetic field during migration by using both high resolution GPS tracking data and geomagnetic data at relatively fine spatial and temporal resolutions in comparison to previous studies. Our simulations use correlated random walks (CRW) and correlated random bridge (CRB) models to model different navigational strategies based on underlying dynamic geomagnetic data. We translated navigational strategies associated with geomagnetic cues into probability surfaces that are included in the random walk models. Simulated trajectories from these models were compared to the actual GPS trajectories of migratory birds using 3 different similarity measurements to evaluate which of the strategies was most likely to have occurred. Results and conclusion We designed a simulation experiment which can be applied to different wildlife species under varying conditions worldwide. In the case of our example species, we found that a compass-type strategy based on taxis, defined as movement towards an extreme value, produced the closest and most similar trajectories when compared to original GPS tracking data in CRW models. Our results indicate less evidence for map navigation (constant heading and bi-gradient taxis navigation). Additionally, our results indicate a multifactorial navigational mechanism necessitating more than one cue for successful navigation to the target. This is apparent from our simulations because the modelled endpoints of the trajectories of the CRW models do not reach close proximity to the target location of the GPS trajectory when simulated with geomagnetic navigational strategies alone. Additionally, the magnitude of the effect of the geomagnetic cues during navigation in our models was low in our CRB models. More research on the scale effects of the geomagnetic field on navigation, along with temporally varying geomagnetic data could be useful for further improving future models.

Abstract:How animals navigate in their cross-continental migration has puzzled scientists for centuries. To date, the mechanism behind this mysterious navigation remains unclear. In this paper, a hypothesis is developed and computer simulations have been performed to investigate long-distance animal navigation. Simulation results show that animals may be able to complete their long-distance navigation by observing a spatial angle included by the geomagnetic field line and a geographic direction, without necessarily knowing any prior landmark information. Our results not only match existing observation reports in detail on the long-distance migration routes of animals, but also are able to explain the conflicting evidence on the role of geomagnetic field in animal navigation. We think our results could help reveal the actual mechanism of animal navigation. This paper also provides a potential solution for global and local area navigation of mankind and machines assisted by artificial sensors.

Abstract:Why do only a minority of alcoholics, perhaps 10%, develop serious liver disorders such as cirrhosis and alcoholic hepatitis? Obvious possibilities include variation in total alcohol intake, patterns of alcohol abuse and diet. Indeed, minor increases in risk have been reported for higher intakes of alcohol, daily versus binge drinking and diets low in micronutrients such as copper, zinc and selenium. Obesity is also a risk factor for the development of liver disease in heavy drinkers but this is more striking for steatosis than for cirrhosis. The possibility that genetic factors might influence susceptibility to both alcoholism and alcoholic liver disease is supported by twin and family studies. Polymorphisms of potential relevance to alcoholism were summarized in the November issue of the Journal. In relation to liver disease, a study in male veterans showed that concordance rates for cirrhosis in monozygotic twins were threefold higher than those in dizygotic twins. This has led to a search for genetic variation (polymorphism) that might promote either hepatic inflammation or fibrosis. These processes are complex but could include oxidative stress, cytokine activity, immune responsiveness or fatty acid metabolism. Polymorphisms that have been reported to be associated with advanced alcoholic liver disease are summarized in Table 1. One mechanism for the generation of reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress) involves the activity of the cytochrome P450 enzyme, CYP2E1. A mutation in the promoter region (c2 allele) results in enhanced enzyme activity and appears to be associated with some increase in risk for cirrhosis in both Japanese and Caucasian populations. Excessive liver iron might also promote oxidative stress but Caucasian patients with alcoholic liver disease do not have a higher than expected frequency of alleles (C282Y and H63D) associated with hemochromatosis. In relation to cytokines, hepatic inflammation might be promoted by an excess of pro-inflammatory cytokines or by a deficiency of anti-inflammatory cytokines. One polymorphism of interest involves the antiinflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10). In one study, a mutation in the IL-10 promoter (C-627 A) that suppresses gene transcription was more frequent in heavy drinkers with advanced liver disease than in heavy drinkers with milder liver disease or in healthy controls. An association has also been reported between advanced liver disease and an uncommon polymorphism (G-238 A) in the pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) that appears to enhance expression of TNF-a. Abstract:The use of magnetoreception is widespread in the animal kingdom. Although much effort has been invested in unraveling the receptor and the mechanism behind this ability, the results remain inconclusive. The recently proposed symbiotic magnetic sensing hypothesis suggests that magnetotactic bacteria symbiotically act as magnetic sensors for the host. In this study, we examined the changes in magnetic orientation of Eurasian reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) placed in Emlen funnels under the influence of antibiotics, in response to a manipulated magnetic field. We found that reed warblers of the control group showed no significant magnetic orientation when placed in a manipulated magnetic field. In contrast, reed warblers placed in an unplugged coil showed significant magnetic southwest orientation. Furthermore, reed warblers exposed to short-term antibiotic treatment (12 h) demonstrated significant magnetic orientation (southwest, regardless of season) and significantly lower directional variance. We hypothesize that individuals from the control group identified the electromagnetic noise induced by the artificial magnetic field. Taken together, this unexpected result may demonstrate the sensitivity of passerines to electromagnetic noise and a possible damping effect of antibiotics on this sensitivity. Assuming our interpretations are correct, we consider this result as indirect experimental support for the symbiotic magnetic sensing hypothesis.

Abstract:Migratory birds are able to navigate over great distances with remarkable accuracy. The mechanism they use to achieve this feat is thought to involve two distinct steps: locating their position (the ‘map’) and heading towards the direction determined (the ‘compass’). For decades, this map-and-compass concept has shaped our perception of navigation in animals, although the nature of the map remains debated. However, some recent studies suggest the involvement of the Earth’s magnetic field in the map step. Here, we tested whether migratory songbirds, Eurasian reed warblers ( Acrocephalus scirpaceus ), can determine their position based on two magnetic field components that are also associated with direction finding, i.e. magnetic inclination and magnetic declination. During a virtual magnetic displacement experiment, the birds were exposed to altered magnetic inclination and magnetic declination values that would indicate a displacement from their natural migratory corridor, but the total intensity of the field remained unchanged, creating a spatial mismatch between these components. The response was a change in the birds’ migratory direction consistent with a compensatory re-orientation. This suggests that birds can extract positional as well as directional information from these cues, even when they are in conflict with another component of the magnetic field. It remains to be seen whether birds use the total intensity of Earth’s magnetic field for navigation.

Abstract:Introduction Migratory birds travel spectacular distances each year, navigating and orienting by a variety of means, most of which are poorly understood. Among these is a remarkable ability to perceive the intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field (Mouritsen and Ritz, 2005; Wiltschko and Wiltschko, 2006; Johnsen and Lohmann, 2008). Biologically credible mechanisms for the detection of such a weak field (25–65 μT) are scarce, and in recent years just two proposals have emerged as front-runners. One, essentially classical, centers on clusters of magnetic iron-containing particles in the upper beak, which appear to act as a magnetometer for determining geographical position (Kirschvink and Gould, 1981; Kirschvink et al. , 2001; Fleissner et al. , 2007; Solov'yov and Greiner, 2007; Walker, 2008; Solov'yov and Greiner, 2009a, b; Falkenberg et al. , 2010). The other relies on the quantum spin dynamics of transient photoinduced radical pairs (Schulten et al. , 1978; Schulten, 1982; Schulten and Windemuth, 1986; Ritz et al. , 2000b; Cintolesi et al. , 2003; Moller et al. , 2004; Mouritsen et al. , 2004; Heyers et al. , 2007; Liedvogel et al. , 2007b, a; Solov'yov et al. , 2007; Feenders et al. , 2008; Maeda et al. , 2008; Solov'yov and Schulten, 2009; Ritz et al. , 2009; Rodgers and Hore, 2009; Zapka et al. , 2009). Originally suggested by Schulten in 1978 (Schulten et al. , 1978) as the basis of the avian magnetic compass sensor, this mechanism gained support from the subsequent observation that the compass is light dependent (Wiltschko et al. , 1993) (for a review see e.g. (Wiltschko et al. , 2010)).

Abstract:Recently, virtual magnetic displacement experiments have shown that magnetic cues are indeed important for determining position in migratory birds; but which sensory system(s) do they use to detect the magnetic map cues? Here, we show that Eurasian reed warblers need trigeminal input to detect that they have been virtually magnetically displaced. Birds with bilaterally ablated ophthalmic branches of the trigeminal nerves were not able to re-orient towards their conspecific breeding grounds after a virtual magnetic displacement, exactly like they were not able to compensate for a real physical displacement. In contrast, sham-operated reed warblers re-oriented after the virtual displacement, like intact controls did in the past. Our results show that trigeminally mediated sensory information is necessary for the correct function of the reed warblers’ magnetic positioning system.

Orientation of birds in radiofrequency fields in the absence of the Earth's magnetic field: a possible test for the radical pair mechanism of magnetoreception

Abstract:The magnetic compass sense of migratory songbirds is thought to derive from magnetically sensitive photochemical reactions in cryptochromes located in photoreceptor cells in the birds' retinas. More specifically, transient radical pairs formed by light-activation of these proteins have been proposed to account for the birds' ability to orient themselves using the Earth's magnetic field and for the observation that radiofrequency magnetic fields, superimposed on the Earth's magnetic field, can disrupt this ability. Here, by means of spin dynamics simulations, we show that it may be possible for the birds to orient in a monochromatic radiofrequency field in the absence of the Earth's magnetic field. If such a behavioural test were successful, it would provide powerful additional evidence for a radical pair mechanism of avian magnetoreception.
The puzzle of magnetic resonance effect on the magnetic compass of migratory birds

Abstract:Experiments on the effect of radio-frequency (RF) magnetic fields on the magnetic compass orientation of migratory birds are analyzed using the theory of magnetic resonance. The results of these experiments were earlier interpreted within the radical-pair model of magnetoreception. However, the consistent analysis shows that the amplitudes of the RF fields used are far too small to noticeably influence electron spins in organic radicals. Other possible agents that could mediate the birds' response to the RF fields are discussed, but apparently no known physical system can be responsible for this effect.

Abstract:Night-migratory songbirds are remarkably proficient navigators<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03618-9#ref-CR1">1</a>. Flying alone and often over great distances, they use various directional cues including, crucially, a light-dependent magnetic compass<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03618-9#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03618-9#ref-CR3">3</a>. The mechanism of this compass has been suggested to rely on the quantum spin dynamics of photoinduced radical pairs in cryptochrome flavoproteins located in the retinas of the birds<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03618-9#ref-CR7">7</a>. Here we show that the photochemistry of cryptochrome 4 (CRY4) from the night-migratory European robin (Erithacus rubecula) is magnetically sensitive in vitro, and more so than CRY4 from two non-migratory bird species, chicken (Gallus gallus) and pigeon (Columba livia). Site-specific mutations of ErCRY4 reveal the roles of four successive flavin–tryptophan radical pairs in generating magnetic field effects and in stabilizing potential signalling states in a way that could enable sensing and signalling functions to be independently optimized in night-migratory birds.

Long-distance Geomagetic Navigation Based on the Simulation of Animals' Migration

Abstract:The methods and mechanisms behind Animals' cross-continental migration is still a mystery up to now. Researchers from different backgrounds have done large amounts of work trying to throw light on this puzzle. In this work, methods different from all the previous researches are used to investigate animal navigation. Combined with natural cues that animals rely on, a navigation algorithm based on geomagnetic spatial angle is proposed to simulate animals' navigation behaviors. Our results not only match existing observation reports, but are also able to explain some conflicting evidences on the role of geomagnetic field in animal navigation.

Abstract:Certain animal species use the Earth's magnetic field (i.e., magnetoreception) alongside their other sensory modalities to navigate long distances that include continents and oceans. It is hypothesized that several animals use geomagnetic parameters, such as field intensity and inclination, to recognize specific locations or regions, potentially enabling migration without a pre-surveyed map. However, it is unknown how animals use geomagnetic information to generate guidance commands, or where in the world this type of strategy would maximize an animal's fitness. While animal experiments have been invaluable in advancing this area, the phenomenon is difficult to study in vivo or in situ, especially on the global scale where the spatial layout of the geomagnetic field is not constant. Alongside empirical animal experiments, mathematical modeling and simulation are complementary tools that can be used to investigate animal navigation on a global scale, providing insights that can be informative across a number of species. In this study, we present a model in which a simulated animal (i.e., agent) navigates via an algorithm which determines travel heading based on local and goal magnetic signatures (here, combinations of geomagnetic intensity and inclination) in a realistic model of Earth's magnetic field. By varying parameters of the navigation algorithm, different regions of the world can be made more or less reliable to navigate. We present a mathematical analysis of the system. Our results show that certain regions can be navigated effectively using this strategy when these parameters are properly tuned, while other regions may require more complex navigational strategies. In a real animal, parameters such as these could be tuned by evolution for successful navigation in the animal's natural range. These results could also help with developing engineered navigation systems that are less reliant on satellite-based methods.

Abstract:Plenty of evidence has implied that animals like pigeons and sea turtles utilize geomagnetic information for long-distance migration and homing. In this paper, we conduct an ab initio investigation to imitate a migratory animal's geomagnetic homing across a long distance over the surface of the Earth. Based on a simple assumption that such animals have a natural ability to sense and compare the included angle between the vector geomagnetic field (GF) and a specific geographic direction such as the due north, we show that a long-distance geomagnetic navigation (GN) can be accomplished without any assistance of prestored geomagnetic and geographic information, as long as the navigation is inside a vast area where such a spatial angle can uniquely determine a geographic location. Without any requirement of measuring the strength of the GF, this GN will not be visibly affected by the recurrent fluctuation of the GF that severely hampers traditional GN. By introducing the extended-Kalman-filter algorithm, it is able to find a shortcut in the geomagnetic space, overcoming interferences of strong Gaussian and local-area geomagnetic anomaly. We believe that the proposed approach will find a wide range of potential applications in global, local, and indoor navigations based on magnetic field in the future.

Abstract:23 True navigation requires both a ‘compass’ (direction) and a ‘map’ (current position relative to 24 goal) sense. Although some species are capable of adjusting towards a goal after displacement, 25 the environmental cues used for a map sense remain elusive. Two possibilities are geomagnetic 26 parameters (magnetic map hypothesis) or atmospheric odour-forming gradients (olfactory map 27 hypothesis). In this study, we examined both of these hypotheses by surgically deactivating 28 either the magnetic or olfactory sensory systems in experienced white-throated sparrows 29 (Zonotrichia albicollis) captured in southern Ontario, Canada, during spring migration. Treated, 30 sham-treated and intact birds were then displaced 2,200 km west to Saskatchewan, Canada. 31 Tracking their initial post-displacement migration using an array of automated VHF receiving 32 towers, we found no evidence in any of the groups for compensatory directional response 33 towards their expected breeding grounds. Our results suggest that white-throated sparrows may 34 fall back to a simple constant-vector orientation strategy instead of performing true navigation 35 after they have been geographically displaced to an unfamiliar area during spring migration. 36 Such a basic strategy may be more common than currently thought in experienced migratory 37 birds and its occurrence could be determined by habitat preferences or range size. 38 39

Abstract:Determining the East-West position was a classical problem in human sea navigation until accurate clocks were manufactured and sailors were able to measure the difference between local time and a fixed reference to determine longitude. Experienced night-migratory songbirds can correct for East-West physical and virtual magnetic displacements to unknown locations. Migratory birds do not appear to possess a time-different clock sense; therefore, they must solve the longitude problem in a different way. We showed earlier that experienced adult (but not juvenile) Eurasian reed warblers (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) can use magnetic declination (the difference in direction between geographic and magnetic North) to solve this problem when they were virtually displaced from Rybachy on the eastern Baltic coast to Scotland. In this study, we aimed to test how general this effect was. Adult and juvenile European robins (Erithacus rubecula) and adult garden warblers (Sylvia borin) under the same experimental conditions did not respond to this virtual magnetic displacement, suggesting significant variation in how navigational maps are organised in different songbird migrants.

Abstract:Navigation and positioning technologies play a key role in modern human activities. Currently, navigation devices are mostly dependent on the global navigation satellite systems, for example, the global positioning system (GPS). However, it is known that GPS signals can be jammed or spoofed or otherwise fail. As the need for GPS independent navigation increases in some practical application scenarios, novel navigation techniques based on the geomagnetic field have been developed. A main task of geomagnetic navigation is to obtain the amplitude and direction of the geomagnetic field accurately. Here, we introduce an alternative scheme for vectorial measurements of the local geomagnetic field for magnetic positioning based on the biological ferric sulfide cluster, which exists in the magnetoreceptor protein/cryptochrome complex in certain avian species. We find that by observing the number of peaks and the proportional rate of spectrum on resonance, both the direction and intensity of the magnetic field can be determined. Therefore, our findings may provide a fresh insight into magnetic field measurement and also suggest further guidelines for the design and operation of satellite-free navigation systems based on the electrically tunable inorganic biological molecules.
