Abstract:Searching for highly efficient and robust CO2 adsorbents is very important for CO2 capture, utilization, and storage. In this study, new polyethylenimine-grafted metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composites, abbreviated as PEI@PGD-H, were synthesized via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) template polymerization of divinylbenzene and glycidyl methacrylate, followed by in situ generation of HKUST-type MOF in the presence of hydrophobic-modified CuO nanoparticles via the reaction of CuO with 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid and then polyethylenimine (PEI) functionalization via epoxy-amine reaction and amine-metal sites interaction. The coexistence of the hierarchical interconnected porous skeleton of poly(glycidyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene) (PGD), high specific surface area of MOF, and chemical CO2 adsorption of PEI endows PEI@PGD-H with high CO2 adsorption capacity, rate, and selectivity. PEI7O@PGD-H shows a CO2/N-2 separation factor as high as 76 and CO2 adsorption capacities of 4.3, 3.0, and 1.8 mmol of CO2/g from pure CO2, simulated flue gas, and air, respectively. After 20 CO2 adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorbent still retained a high and stable CO2 capture capacity over 2.8 mmol of CO2/g for simulated flue gas. The adsorbent also displays reasonably good thermal stability, excellent water endurance, low desorption energy, and easy shaping. The desorption heat is as low as 48 kJ/mol of CO2. These features make PEI@PGD-H highly efficient, robust, and low-energy CO2 adsorbents for practical application in CO2 capture.

The adsorption results showed that CO2 concentration in multi-component gas decreased from 48.75 to 12.9%, and H2 concentration increased from 38.75 to 75.45%. Therefore, Cu-BTC has the potential for removal of CO2 from SCWG syngas, and more work is necessary to further improve the adsorption capacity and selectivity.Graphical abstract

Abstract:High CO2 content exists in the raw syngas produced from supercritical water gasification of food waste, CO2 removal to improve quality of the syngas is necessary before further utilization. In this study, Cu-BTC, Mg/Cu-BTC, Cu-BTC@MWCNT, and Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT were synthesized and characterized as CO2 adsorbents. The adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the optimal adsorbent and adsorption conditions. The results indicated that Mg2+ and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) doped into Cu-BTC influenced the physical properties of adsorbents. Among of all studied adsorbents, Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT had the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity (3.63 mmol/g) and selectivity (14.28) at 25 °C and 100 kPa. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) exhibited that adsorption pressure had significant effects on CO2 adsorption capacity of Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT. The influences of different operating parameters on CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity were discussed in Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT. The adsorption isotherms of gas components on Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT can be sorted as follows: CO2 > CO > CH4 > H2. In additional, the regeneration experiment with 5 times was conducted and the result showed that Mg/Cu-BTC@MWCNT has high stability.

Abstract:The rise in atmospheric CO2 levels is generating alarm with an urgency to develop carbon removal technology. As a promising post-combustion capture method, adsorption process using materials e.g. biochar-based activated carbon (AC) has received increasing attention. Thus, two types of coconut shell (CS) derived ACs that secondary activated by KOH and NaOH are investigated in terms of textural properties, CO2 adsorption behaviors and desorption temperatures. It is demonstrated that KOH shows a better activation effect on capture performance than NaOH, and chemical CS-KOH (CHCS-KOH) could reach the highest BET surface area of 1701.39 m2 g-1 and CO2 uptake of 2.11 mmol g-1 at 0 degrees C, 0.15 bar and 4.17 mmol g-1 at 20 degrees C, 1 bar, respectively. Dynamic adsorption data are well fitted by a pseudo second-order kinetic model, and the samples could be completely desorbed at 40 degrees C. To further explore CO2 uptake and H2O/CO2 adsorption selectivity, amine (PEI/TEPA) modifications are proposed. The results suggest an enhanced adsorption performance of PEI&CHCS-KOH com-posites under humid flue gas with volume ratio of water in the range of 5-15 vol%, which exhibits the highest promoting effect to 1.81 mmol g-1 at 20 degrees C, 0.15 bar with 100% RH 15 vol% H2O for 1 wt% composite. Prominent cost benefit has also been revealed in comparison with PEI&silica gel under the condition of dry and humid conditions, along with superior cyclic stability, which indicates potential application in carbon capture.
Enhanced Tolerance to Flue Gas Contaminants on Carbon Dioxide Capture Using Amine-Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of adsorbents for carbon dioxide can be significantly affected by flue gas contaminants. In this work, we examined the performance of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) impregnated industrial grade multiwalled carbon nanotubes (IG-MWCNTs) in trace amounts of flue gas contaminants such as H2O, NO, and SO2. It was observed that H2O and NO had a minimal impact on CO2 adsorption capacity, while the effect of SO2 on CO2 adsorption was influenced by adsorption temperature and SO2 concentration. Compared with silica-based adsorbents, i.e., TEPA-impregnated MCM-41, amine-functionalized IG-MWCNTs show significantly better tolerance to H2O and SO2. In addition, we examined the variation of CO2 adsorption with and without SO2 with various experimental methods (N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis) and molecular simulation. Experimental results show that irreversible sulfate/sulphite species deposited into the adsorbent contributes to the decrease on CO2 adsorption, while the results from simulation studies reveal that the enthalpy difference between the isolated TEPA with SO2 and TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2 (Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2)) is larger than that of CO2 (Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot CO2)), indicating that SO2 has a stronger reaction activity with TEPA than CO2. The increase of the ratio of Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot SO2)/Delta H(TEPA center dot center dot center dot CO2) with increasing temperature illustrates that the difference of CO2 adsorption capacity with and without SO2 increases with elevated temperatures.
Carbon dioxide capture by functionalized solid amine sorbents with simulated flue gas conditions.

Abstract:A novel solid amine sorbent was prepared using KIT-6-type mesoporous silica modified with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). Its adsorption behavior toward CO(2) from simulated flue gases is investigated using an adsorption column. The adsorption capacities at temperatures of 303, 313, 333, 343, and 353 K are 2.10, 2.29, 2.58, 2.85, and 2.71 mmol g(-1) respectively. Experimental adsorption isotherms were obtained, and the average isosteric heat of adsorption was 43.8 kJ/mol. The adsorption capacity increases to 3.2 mmol g(-1) when the relative humidity (RH) of the simulated flue gas reaches 37%. The adsorption capacity is inhibited slightly by the presence of SO(2) at concentrations lower than 300 ppm but is not significantly influenced by NO at concentrations up to 400 ppm. The adsorbent is completely regenerated in 10 min at 393 K and a pressure of 5 KPa, with expected consumption energy of about 1.41 MJ kg(-1) CO(2). The adsorption capacity remains almost the same after 10 cycles of adsorption/regeneration with adsorption conditions of 10 vol % CO(2), 100 ppm SO(2), 200 ppm NO, 100% relative humidity, and a temperature of 393 K. The solid amine sorbent, KIT-6(TEPA), performs excellently for CO(2) capture and its separation from flue gas.
A Solvent ‘squeezing’ Strategy to Graft Ethylenediamine on Cu3(BTC)2 for Highly Efficient CO2/CO Separation

Abstract:Highly efficient separation of residual carbon dioxide (CO2) from syngas, mainly composed of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H-2), could not only make its utilization more energetically efficient but also avoid catalysts poisoning in some industrial applications. In the attempts to address this issue, it is acknowledged that CO2/CO separation is the vital step since H-2 is a nonpolar molecules, difficult to be polarized and could be easily separated from CO2. Herein, we report a novel strategy to graft basic ethylenediamine (ED) molecules onto porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as solid adsorbents for CO2/CO separation via solvent 'squeezing' approach, in which Cu-3(BTC)(2) (BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) MOF was employed as the pristine MOF. Surprisingly, the ED-grafted Cu-3(BTC)(2) shows unprecedented enhancement of CO2/CO selectivity of 226% at 273 K and 861% at 298 K, respectively, in comparison with the solvent-free Cu-3(BTC)(2). Moreover, despite the large isosteric heats of adsorption of CO2 on the ED-grafted Cu-3(BTC)(2), it could be easily regenerated at moderate temperature. Discovering the Interference of Hydrogen Sulfide on Polyethylenimine-Functionalized Porous Resin for Biogas Upgrading Via CO2 Adsorption

Abstract:Because of the considerable CO2 adsorption capacity, selectivity, and stability, amine-functionalized materials have been recently investigated as promising adsorbents for biogas upgrading to biomethane, which provides the preferred gaseous bioenergy resource. Nevertheless, the typical impurity in biogas, H2S, has a potential influence on biogas upgrading, as another acid component to react with amines besides CO2. After all, even the trace H2S after biogas desulfurization might have an accumulative effect, based on previous experience in studying other acid impurities. Herein, we explored the interference of H2S (5-5000 ppm) on the prepared polyethylenimine-functionalized porous resin (PEI/HP20), which has exhibited excellent performance for biogas upgrading. The distinct of adsorption capacity, kinetic behavior, and regeneration performance between the two reactive components (CO(2)and H2S) in biogas was systemically investigated. It was found that, in contrast with CO2, the adsorbed H2S on PEDHP20 was not comparable through slow single-stage kinetic behavior and had limited impact, especially in consideration of the practical biogas upgrading within finite time. Besides, the reversible binding of H2S, proved by the regeneration performance and chemical characterization, was also favorable and pivotal for the PEI/HP20. In addition, the stable operation (capacity loss of 1%) by continuous adsorption-regeneration cycles under H2S-containing simulated biogas have finally demonstrated the ignorable interference of H2S on PEI/HP20, manifesting its strong adaptability in biogas upgrading.
Adsorption of low-concentration carbon dioxide on amine-modified carbon nanotubes at ambient temperature

Abstract:A solid amine adsorbent for CO2 was developed by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) impregnated with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). The adsorption behavior toward CO2 (2.0 vol %) was investigated in a fixed-bed column. After modification, the adsorption capacity of CNTs-TEPA reached 2.97 mmol g(-1) at 298 K Rising temperatures from 283 to 313 K enhanced the CO2 adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 3.56 mmol g(-1) at 313 K. The adsorption capacity was also influenced by moisture and reached as high as 3.87 mmol g(-1) (2.0% H2O). In comparison to many other types of modified carbon or silica adsorbents in the literature, CNTs-TEPA had a higher adsorption capacity at the same temperature. The adsorption capacity for CO2 remained almost the same after cyclic regeneration experiments. A deactivation model, capable of describing the uptake of CO2, was applied under various conditions. In all cases, the experimental data agreed with the predicted breakthrough model.
Biogas Upgrading via Cyclic CO 2 Adsorption: Application of Highly Regenerable PEI@nano-Al 2 O 3 Adsorbents with Anti-Urea Properties

Abstract:Solid amine adsorbents are among the most promising CO2 adsorption technologies for biogas upgrading due to their high selectivity toward CO2, low energy consumption, and easy regeneration. However, in most cases, these adsorbents undergo severe chemical inactivation due to urea formation when regenerated under a realistic CO2 atmosphere. Herein, we demonstrated a facile and efficient synthesis route, involving the synthesis of nano-Al2O3 support derived from coal fly ash with a CO2 flow as the precipitant and the preparation of polyethylenimine (PEI)-impregnated Al2O3-supported adsorbent. The optimal 55%%Al2O3 adsorbent showed a high CO2 uptake of 139 mg·g–1 owing to the superior pore structure of synthesized nano-Al2O3 support and exhibited stable cyclic stability with a mere 0.29% decay per cycle even under the realistic regenerated CO2 atmosphere. The stabilizing mechanism of 2O3 adsorbent was systematically demonstrated, namely, the cross-linking reaction between the amidogen of a PEI molecule and nano-Al2O3 support, owing to the abundant Lewis acid sites of nano-Al2O3. This cross-linking process promoted the conversion of primary amines into secondary amines in the PEI molecule and thus significantly enhanced the cyclic stability of 2O3 adsorbents by markedly inhibiting the formation of urea compounds. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized as promising adsorbents for carbon capture due to their ultrahigh surface areas and tunable properties. However, a majority of MOFs have strict requirements for preparation and high mass transfer resistance that limits the gas separation time. In order to improve the applicability of MOFs to practical applications, herein, we reported an experimental approach to prepare structured CuBTC/graphene aerogel (GA) composites using ionic liquid (IL) additives (CuBTC/GA-IL) at room temperature for CO2 capture. The material was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), specific surface area analysis, and CO2 adsorption tests. It was demonstrated that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the higher CO2 uptake than CuBTC/GA prepared without IL additives. Besides, the breakthrough experiments have shown that CuBTC/GA-IL exhibited the lower mass transfer resistance compared with CuBTC-IL and good cyclability. The effective approach of fabricating CuBTC into GA using IL additives to improve CO2 adsorption in this study may be extensively applied for other MOF-based composites.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, it has become urgent to reduce CO2 emissions. It is imperative to develop low-cost and high-efficiency CO2 direct air capture adsorbents. In this research, hierarchical mesoporous silica (HMS) was easily synthesized through a partitioned synergistic self-assembly method, and amine bi-functionalized HMS adsorbents were prepared using 3-[2-(2-Aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (DT) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) employing various techniques. A high specific surface area (570 m(2)/g) and large pore volume (2.29 cm(3)/g) were obtained for the HMS with two types of pores (6.32 nm and 17.38 nm). The structural composition of amine-functionalized solid adsorbent affected the adsorption-desorption performance of CO2. Multi-stage pore structure with three-dimensional connection can effectively enhance the adsorption-desorption performance of adsorbent. The stable adsorption performance, the effects of organic amine loading, adsorption mechanism, relative humidity and adsorption temperature on the CO2 adsorption properties of D-HMS-T-50 were examined. The CO2 adsorption capacity of D-HMS-T-50 reached 4.99 mmol/g at 338 K, 1 bar and 30 % relative humidity. Additionally, a lower heat consumption of desorption (79.92 KJ/mol) is needed for D-HMS-T-50. The results proved that D-HMS-T-50 with high adsorption capacity and low regeneration energy can be provided as a solid amine adsorbent for direct air capture of CO2.

Abstract:Ultrahigh-purity hydrogen (6 N grade) suitable for hydrogen fuel cells requires the removal of CO2 impurity from commercial hydrogen feed. In this study, CO2 adsorption over a series of potential solid adsorbents was assessed at both high (0.1–1 bar) and low (hundreds of part-per-million) concentrations. With a distinct trend at higher concentrations (0.1–1 bar), PEI/S showed a remarkable CO2 capacity of 0.86 mmol/g at concentration as low as hundred part-per-million and outperformed the other adsorbents. The impacts of polyethylenimine (PEI) loading, adsorption temperature, co-existing H2O, and regenerability were investigated systematically. Adsorption isotherms of PEI/S at various loadings were represented with the Langmuir–Freundlich model, while adsorption kinetics were simulated and fitted with the AFO model. The effectiveness of PEI/S for CO2 removal was further investigated in dynamic fixed-bed breakthrough experiments. The co-presence of trace water vapor in the feed stream showed negligible inhibition on CO2 adsorption. In addition, multiple cycles of adsorption–desorption tests demonstrated the excellent regenerability of the PEI/S adsorbents. This study gave a comprehensive evaluation and demonstration of supported polyethylenimine as a potential TSA adsorbent for adsorptive removal of trace CO2 for ultrahigh purity H2 production.

Abstract:To increase the value of syngas produced by supercritical water gasification (SCWG), K 2 CO 3 /γ-Al 2 O 3 composite adsorbents were used to remove CO 2 from crude syngas with high content of CO 2 . Two kinds of γ-Al 2 O 3 particles were evaluated and compared as K 2 CO 3 carriers. Characterization using SEM and N 2 adsorption/desorption found that K 2 CO 3 /nano-γ-Al 2 O 3 had better dispersibility, larger specific surface area, and pore volume than K 2 CO 3 /normal γ-Al 2 O 3 ; this increased the chance of mass transfer between K 2 CO 3 and CO 2 . The effects of K 2 CO 3 load ratio, adsorption temperature, gas flow rate, and regeneration temperature on CO 2 adsorption performance of K 2 CO 3 /nano-γ-Al 2 O 3 were also discussed. K 2 CO 3 /nano-γ-Al 2 O 3 had the optimum CO 2 adsorption capacity of 2.029 mmol/g at 60 °C. Low gas flow rate was found to produce better CO 2 adsorption performance. And the adsorbent could be fully regenerated by heating. Moreover, the adsorption of CO 2 by K 2 CO 3 /nano-γ-Al 2 O 3 increased the heating value of the syngas from 8.56 MJ/Nm 3 to 13.51 MJ/Nm 3 and H 2 concentration from 41.6% to 75.65%. High selectivity of CO 2 /H 2 (23.5) and (CO 2 + CO + CH 4 )/H 2 (17.6) from K 2 CO 3 /nano-γ-Al 2 O 3 revealed that it could be a suitable adsorbent for syngas upgrading. Graphical abstract

Abstract:Based on the principle that compounds can spontaneously disperse to the surface of supports to form a monolayer, heating supports of high surface area such as gamma-Al2O3, 4A, 13X, NaY and CuY zeolites etc, with CuCl adsorbents with CuCl highly dispersed on the surface of the supports can e btained, XRD and EXAFS experiments have shown that the CuCl is in atomic scale dispersion, The best adsorbents CuCl/NaY and CuCl/CuY can have CO capacity of 90 mL/g support and 100 mL/g support respectively at 20 degrees C and CO partial pressure of 60 kPa. A CuCl/zeolite adsorbent PU-1 whcih has optimization recipe and suitable binder has been made in commercial scale, The adsorbent has been used in a PSA process successfully to separate CO from gas mixtures of CO, H-2, N-2, CH4 and CO2. The CO product has a purity >99% with yield >85%. It has also been used to remove trace CO in H-2 or N-2 at >5 000 h. The purified gases have CO <1 X 10(-6) mol/L.
Experimental and Kinetics Investigations of Low-Concentration CO2 Adsorption on Several Amine-Functionalized Adsorbents

Abstract:The rapid cleanup of endogenous CO2 has become a necessity in environmental control and life support systems (ECLSSs), to ensure crew safety and long-term task execution. The extensively used non-regenerable LiOH and soda lime adsorbents, although exhibit high CO2 storage capacities and fast kinetics, can hardly fulfill the demands of reduced launch weight and storage volume in the space-and load-limited ECLSSs. New CO2 adsorbents with desirable attributes including high CO2 uptakes, good selectivity, facile regeneration, fast adsorption and desorption kinetics, and good multicycle stability are urgently needed. We developed amine-functionalized adsorbents by loading tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on mesoporous supports of activated carbon (AC), aluminum oxide (AO) and silica gel (SG). The adsorbents were characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study their microstructural properties. CO2 adsorption capacities and kinetic performance of the adsorbents with different supports and various amine loadings (10-50 wt%) were evaluated in 2%CO2 at 20 degrees C. The effects of support and amine loading on the structure-performance relationships of the adsorbents were demonstrated. The TEPA-SG-20 adsorbent (20 wt% TEPA loaded on silica gel support) exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity of 1.90 mmol CO2/g and the maximum amine efficiency of 0.48 mmol CO2/mmol N. TEPA-SG-20 also exhibits fast CO2 adsorption kinetics, and the Avrami fractional order kinetic model provides a satisfactory correlation of the experimental CO2 uptakes. Furthermore, the TEPA-SG-20 adsorbent can be efficiently regenerated at 110 degrees C with a great regeneration efficacy of 97%. The desired adsorbent also exhibits good working stability with a low loss-in-capacity of 4.32% in 10 consecutive cycles. The good CO2 adsorption performance of TEPA-SG-20 is associated with the excellent microstructural properties such as high surface area, great pore volume and uniform dispersion of amine species. The effect of humidity on the enhanced CO2 adsorption of amine-functionalized microporous activated carbon

Abstract:Cost-effective and environmentally friendly sorbents were created for capturing CO 2 by incorporating monoethanolamine (MEA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) onto a microporous activated carbon (AC) material. The application of a KOH reagent enhanced the surface area and pore volume of the carbon material. The BET, SEM, EDX, and FTIR techniques were employed to analyze the structural and surface properties of the developed samples. Raw AC possessed the highest surface area and largest micropore volume equal to 786 m 2 /g and 0.33 cm 3 /g, respectively. The amine impregnation increased the nitrogen content of the carbon material, but it also significantly reduced the BET surface area and total pore volume, which are primarily responsible for physically adsorbing CO 2 towards ACs. The CO 2 adsorption performance of the raw and impregnated ACs was experimentally evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at different adsorption temperatures (25 and 50 °C) and CO 2 concentrations (10 and 90 vol.%). The findings demonstrated that the raw AC exhibited the highest capacity for CO 2 adsorption. Specifically, at a temperature of 25 °C and pressure of 1 bar (10 vol.% CO 2 , N 2 balance), the raw AC achieved an uptake of 1.2 mmol/g, which was 60.3% and 79.3% higher compared to the CO 2 uptake of MEA-AC (0.5 mmol/g) and TEPA-AC (0.3 mmol/g), respectively. It is surprising that the combined uptake of CO 2 + H 2 O increased by 12.5 and 23.4 wt.% (equivalent to 7 and 13 mmol/g) for MEA-AC and TEPA-AC, respectively, when humid flue gas was taken into account under the conditions of 50 °C, with 10 vol.% CO 2 , 4 vol.% H 2 O, and N 2 balance. These results indicate that the presence of H 2 O facilitates the chemisorption of CO 2 by the novel and highly promising carbon-based sorbent prepared in this study, leading to an increased capacity for adsorbing CO 2 under water vapor containing flue gases.

Abstract:In recent years, amine functionalized materials have attracted great interest as prospective solid adsorbents for CO2 capture. However, the amine functionalization of traditional supports (such as SBA-15, etc.) can lead to a decrease in the pore volume and specific surface area of the adsorbent, which significantly affects the CO2 adsorption–desorption kinetics. To overcome this problem, the macro-/mesoporous multimodal pore silica was quickly synthesized using a ternary nonionic surfactant as a template through a partitioned collaborative self-assembly method, and impregnated with TEPA. The prepared support HMS-4 h has bimodal pores (pore size of 9.41 nm and 90 nm), which can not only improve the dispersibility of the loaded TEPA, but also effectively reduce the diffusion resistance of CO2. At the same time, the high surface area (838 m2/g) and large pore volume (2.34 cm3/g) of HMS-4 h can further improve the adhesion and quantity of amine-based active sites. The highest adsorption capacity reaches 6.04 mmol/g for HMS-4 h-75%TEPA at 90 ℃ and 1 bar. The adsorption capacity for HMS-4 h-75%TEPA was steady after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. BET, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TG-DTG were used to characterize the performance of the adsorbent. The CO2 adsorption mechanism and the effects of organic amine loading, adsorption temperature and CO2 concentration on CO2 adsorption performance were systematically studied. The research shows that HMS-4 h-75%TEPA is an excellent adsorbent with high adsorption capacity in a wide temperature range, and low energy. This provides a reference for the design of high-performance solid amine CO2 adsorbents in the future.

Abstract:Biochar-based carbonaceous adsorbents are gaining interest due to their high availability, ease of modification, and low cost; however, they show limited adsorption of CO2 in flue gas due to common textural properties. In this study, TEPA-modified biochar was used to prepare a solid amine adsorbent for the efficient capture of CO2 in flue gas. First, the porous biochar was prepared with FeCl3, Mg(NO3)2, and H2O (g) as activators and walnut shells as carbon sources. Next, the biochar was modified with TEPA to obtain a solid amine adsorbent. Porous texture properties and sample surface functional groups were characterized, and we measured the adsorption CO2 of the amine-modified biochar in a breakthrough adsorption device. Results showed that biochar has a large specific surface area (744.38 m2 g−1), a total pore volume of 1.41 cm3 g−1, and a high mesoporous volume ratio (82.7%). The high pore volume provided a more efficient support space for loading tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). The adsorbent had an excellent CO2 adsorption capacity, corresponding to 2.82 mmol g−1, which increased to 3.31 mmol g−1 and kept water resistance at 10% H2O (g) simulated flue gas (SFG). The FTIR analysis showed that H2O (g) inhibited urea production after cyclic adsorption. Therefore, solid amine adsorbent created by amine-modified biochar has potential advantages in its application for capturing CO2 in SFG.
