Abstract:This study investigated the properties of chitosan/zein/tea polyphenols (C/Z/T) films and analyzed the release kinetics of tea polyphenols (TP) in various food simulants to enhance the sustainability and functionality of food packaging. The results revealed that TP addition enhanced the hydrophilicity, opacity and mechanical properties of film, and improved the compatibility between film matrix. 1.5 % TP film showed the lowest lightness (76.4) and the highest chroma (29.1), while 2 % TP film had the highest hue angle (1.5). However, the excessive TP (above 1 % concentration) led to a decrease in compatibility and mechanical properties of film. The TP concentration (2 %) resulted in the highest swelling degree in aqueous (750.6 %), alcoholic (451.1 %), and fatty (6.4 %) food simulants. The cumulative release of TP decreased to 16.32 %, 47.13 %, and 5.87 % with the increase of TP load in the aqueous, alcoholic, and fatty food simulants, respectively. The Peleg model best described TP release kinetics. The 2 % TP-loaded film showed the highest DPPH (97.13 %) and ABTS (97.86 %) free radical scavenging activity. The results showed TP release influenced by many factors and obeyed Fick's law of diffusion. This study offered valuable insights and theoretical support for the practical application of active films.

Abstract:The functional films based on chitosan and corn starch incorporated tea polyphenols were developed through mixing the chitosan and starch solution and the powder of tea polyphenols by the casting method. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of different concentrations of tea polyphenols on the functional properties of the films. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate the potential interactions among chitosan, corn starch and tea polyphenols in the blend films. Physical properties of the blend films, including density, moisture content, opacity, color, water solubility and water swelling, as well as morphological characteristics, were measured. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of tea polyphenols caused the blend films to lead to a darker appearance. The water solubility of the blend film increased with the increase of tea polyphenol concentrations, while moisture content and swelling degree decreased. The hydrogen bonding between chitosan, starch and tea polyphenols restricted the movement of molecular chains and was helpful to the stability of the blend films. The results suggested that these biodegradable blend films could potentially be used as packaging films for the food and drug industries to extend the shelf life to maintain their quality and safety.

Abstract:Novel chitosan films incorporating epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were prepared and demonstrated the ideal physical and mechanical properties required of candidate food packaging materials alongside desirable antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Compared with traditional chitosan films, chitosan films incorporated with EGCG were thicker, had higher tensile strength and water solubility, and had lower elongation at break, moisture content, degree of swelling, and water contact angles. Although EGCG-containing films were slightly darker in color than pure chitosan films, they exhibited a greater inhibitory effect on light-induced oxidation with obviously improved UV–vis barrier capability and opacity. Scanning electron microscopy results suggested that EGCG-incorporated samples had a rougher surface structure. This was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy and indicated that the addition of EGCG facilitated the formation of protective barriers through the interaction between the film and food surface. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that EGCG interacted with chitosan by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and effectively improved the thermal stability of chitosan films. Notably, the incorporation of EGCG significantly enhanced the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of chitosan films. Hence, chitosan films incorporating EGCG have potential applications in the food industry as a novel active packaging material, especially in preventing food oxidation and spoilage in perishable foods.

Abstract:A chitosan/gelatin composite packaging film with antioxidant activity, bacteriostatic activity and pH responsiveness was prepared. Red cabbage pigment (RC) and enterocin CHQS were added as actives. In addition, different concentrations of citric acid (CA) were selected as crosslinking agents. Before that, in order to improve the yield of enterocin CHQS and simplify the purification process, we cloned and expressed CHQS in E. coli BL21 (DE3), resulting in an approximately 10-fold increase in yield. The appearances of the films were uniform and transparent with some UV-blocking ability. The results of antioxidant experiments of the films showed that the antioxidant capacity of the films was significantly increased by the addition of RC. Ammonia sensitivity experiments showed that the films could respond to volatile ammonia. Cross-linking improved the thermal stability, water sensitivity and photosensitivity of the films. FTIR and XPS revealed the mode of interaction between CHQS, CA, RC and the composite film structure. FTIR, XPS and XRD confirmed the cross-linking effect of CA. Atomic force microscopy showed that the addition of CA significantly increased the roughness of the film surface. The release experiments of RC showed that the cross-linking of CA promoted the release of active substances from the film and avoided the excessive release due to the dissolution breakage of the film. In addition, bacteria inhibition experiments showed that the addition of CA increased the antimicrobial properties of the films The experiments demonstrated that CHQS was effectively released and the bacteriocins in the films were stably preserved.

Abstract:Films with excellent mechanical and activity have potential application in food preservation. Active films were prepared by blending Konjac glucomannan/Pullulan/Microcrystalline cellulose and Tea polyphenols. The effect of different content of MCC (0%–20%), and different treatment methods of film-preparing process, including ultrasonic or magnetic stirring on rheological properties, physicochemical, morphological characteristics, antioxidant and antibacterial were explored. Results suggested that ultrasound lowered the viscosity of film-solution, while adding MCC increased the water vapor permeability (WVP) and haze degree of films. Incorporating of optimal content of MCC (10%–15%), and treated by ultrasound could further increased the tensile strength (TS), U-10% film showed the highest TS (117.61 MPa), ultrasound could make the evenly disperses MCC in film-matrix by SEM. Additionally, films with TP presented excellent antioxidant activities and antibacterial activities against S.aureus and E.coli . Finally, the active films effectively preserved Agaricus bisporus and strawberries. Overall, the active films have potential applications in food packaging.

Abstract:We report a novel cross-linked chitosan composite film containing vanillin, glycerol, and green tea extract. The effects of vanillin-mediated cross-linking and the incorporation of antimicrobial green tea polyphenols were investigated. The cross-linking effect, confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, increased the tensile strength of the biopolymer film to 20.9 ± 3 MPa. The release kinetics of polyphenols from the chitosan-vanillin matrix was studied, and we reported an initial burst release (8 h) followed by controlled release (8 to 400 h). It was found that both vanillin and green tea polyphenols were successful inhibitors of foodborne bacteria, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of the tea polyphenols determined as 0.15 mg/mL (Staphylococcus aureus). These active components also displayed strong antioxidant capacities, with polyphenols quenching >80% of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals at all concentrations tested. Degradation results revealed that there was a significant (>85%) mass loss of all samples after being buried in compost for 12 weeks. The biopolymeric films, prepared by solvent casting methods, adhere to green chemistry and waste valorization principles. The one-pot recipe reported may also be applied to other cross-linkers and active compounds with similar chemical functionalities. Based on the obtained results, the presented material provides a promising starting point for the development of a degradable active packaging material.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to develop a novel antimicrobial packaging film by using chitosan (CS), deep eutectic solvent (DES, a plasticizer) and tea tree essential oil (TTO, a natural antibacterial agent). The physical properties of the films (i.e., water content, solubility, water vapor permeability, color, thickness, water contact angle, and mechanical properties) demonstrated that TTO reduced the hydrophilicity of the films. At the same time, DES significantly improved the flexibility of the films. Micro-structural characterization showed that DES and TTO interacted with the CS matrix and were uniformly dispersed in films. The interactions among these main components in the films were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis further confirmed that these films had good thermal stability. In addition, the antibacterial assays verified that the CS-DES-TTO films could inhibit the activity of planktonic Sh. flexneri . The films prepared in this study showed the characteristics required of active packaging materials.

Abstract:Background: In this study, a new crosslinking agent (CA) containing whey protein, papin, glycerin, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), was prepared. The effects of CA content (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%, v/v) on food packaging properties, crystallinity, microstructure, and antioxidant properties of pectin-CA and chitosan-CA composite films were analyzed. The results of this research offer a theoretical basis for engineering improved films for food packing. Results: Pectin-CA (30%) and chitosan-CA (40%) composite films showed the best light transmission, water retention, breathability, plasticity, and antioxidant activity. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that these composite films exhibited a uniform and homogeneous structure without obvious pores. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that the amino acids and EGCG in CA were bonded to the film substrate (pectin/chitosan) via electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and covalent bonding, which led to an improvement in the film's properties. Conclusion: The CA has broad application prospects in food packaging as a cross-linking agent and antioxidant. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
Interfacial Assembly of a Cashew Nut (Anacardium occidentale) Testa Extract onto a Cellulose-Based Film from Sugarcane Bagasse to Produce an Active Packaging Film with pH-Triggered Release Mechanism

Abstract:This study aims to produce a biodegradable active packaging film that is pH sensitive, and has a good antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. To do this, a novel phenolic extract was interfacially assembled onto a cellulose film, resulting in a film with a pH-triggered release mechanism of the active polyphenol agent. First, an aqueous extraction of cashew nut testa (CTE) was performed and subsequently, the CTE was characterized. The disc diffusion assay showed that CTE exhibited antimicrobial activity towards the food pathogens Escherichia coli (6 mm) and Staphylcoccus aureus (12 mm). CTE was also cytotoxic against cancer HepG2 and HEK293 cells, reducing the viability to 52% and 47%, respectively. It was incorporated into a cellulose-based packaging film, prepared from the by-product, sugarcane bagasse (SC) through interfacial assembly. The incorporation of CTE resulted in a film with good antimicrobial activity, excellent antioxidant content (91%), and has extremely high thermal stability (290 °C). FTIR indicated the formation of hydrogen bond between the SC cellulose-based film and CTE. The hydrogen bonds formed between the cellulose film and CTE became the driving force behind the pH-triggered release mechanism. It was found that the active agent, tannic acid, could be controllably released from the film, depending on the pH of the environment. Our strategy to produce a cellulose-based film impregnated with a phenolic extract, using interfacial assembly, resulted in an active packaging film with pH-triggered release mechanism. This film could be useful to extend the shelf life of perishable food items.

Abstract:The effects of laccase crosslinking chitosan (CS) and tea polyphenols (TP) on the structure, physical and antioxidant properties of CS-based biodegradable films were investigated in this study. Laccase crosslinking significantly increased the particle size and zeta-potential of CS + TP particles. A simple blending of CS and TP decreased the elongation at break significantly, while the elongation at break of biodegradable films significantly increased after laccase crosslinking. Furthermore, TP addition increased the tensile strength (TS) of CS based films, while laccase crosslinking promoted the increase, making it more suitable for application. The addition of TP significantly changed the CS-based films from white and transparent to light brown. NMR spectra showed that no CN bond was observed in CS + TP particles, which could result from the inhibition of Schiff base reaction due to the big steric hindrance of TP. Right shift of amide I peak to lower wavelength in laccase catalyzed films indicated the conversion of some primary amines into secondary amines caused by Michael addition reaction. It was proposed that laccase oxidized polyphenol to o-quinones, which reacted with nucleophilic groups of chitosan, leading to the increase of secondary amines. Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity of CS + TP films crosslinked by laccase increased significantly compared with CS and CS + TP blended films. In , laccase catalysis could be applied to manufacture biodegradable films with improved mechanical property and antioxidant activity.

Abstract:Chitosan/hydroxyethyl cellulose-based sustainable food packaging composite films (CS/HEC/NC) crosslinked with citric acid (CA) and containing organophilic nanoclay were prepared using the solvent casting method. The physical, thermal, mechanical and barrier properties of as-synthesized composite films were evaluated toward their use as an alternative to petroleum-based polymers. A considerable improvement was observed in surface hydrophobicity, water resistance, barrier properties, tensile strength, and thermal stability of the composite films with increasing nanoclay ratio. CS/HEC/NC3 film loaded with 5 wt% nanoclay exhibited the best physical properties with percent enhancements of 22.94°C, 52.56% and 36.53° in maximum degradation temperature, tensile strength, and water contact angle, respectively, over the neat CS/HEC film. In addition, low permeabilities against water vapor (1.240 × 10 −11 gs −1 m −1 Pa −1 ) and oxygen (1.12 × 10 −16 m 3 s −1 m −1 Pa −1 ), and also strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were obtained for this film. The food preservation effects of CS/HEC/NC composite films against cherry tomatoes were also studied, and less than 20% mass loss was achieved in five weeks. Consequently, CS/HEC/NC composite films can be considered competitive packaging materials with great potential to improve safety and quality and extend the shelf life of packaged foods.

Abstract:The primary purpose of this study is to develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the adoption of SWAH. Specifically, it examines how the work and family environments of dual-career male and female and traditional male parents who perform SWAH differ from the work and family environments of their cohorts who do not. People who perform SWAH were found to work significantly more hours per week and more hours at home than those who did not adopt SWAH. The data indicates that men and women who have higher level more challenging jobs (Le., greater work expectations and lower role clarity) were more likely to adopt SWAH than were men and women with fewer career demands. There were no significant differences in the family environments of men who did and did not adopt SWAH. Perceived family responsibility (i.e., family involvement, family expectations) was associated with a woman's tendency to adopt SWAH.
Effect of citric acid induced crosslinking on the structure and properties of potato starch/chitosan composite films

Abstract:Potato starch/chitosan (PS/CS) films cross-linked with citric acid (CA) at different concentrations (5%–20%, w/w, on a dry basis of the weight of PS and CS) were developed via a solution blending-casting method, and their structure, water resistance, physical and mechanical properties, and antimicrobial activity were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry studies confirmed crosslinking among PS, CS and CA. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the cross-sectional fracture surfaces of all the films were smooth and homogenous, while the surface roughness of the CA cross-linked PS/CS films was higher than that of the uncross-linked films as also confirmed by the three-dimensional surface topography images. It was found that the properties of the films changed as the CA content varied, ascribing to the cosslinking and plasticizing effect of CA. The water resistance properties of the CA cross-linked PS/CS films were improved significantly when compared to the uncross-linked films. Moreover, the incorporation of CA could enhance the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of PS/CS films to some extent. Particularly, the results indicated that the films cross-linked with 15% CA showed the best comprehensive properties among all films. For example, the swelling degree of the films with 15% CA decreased from 686.4% to 98.1%, and water vapor permeability decreased from 3.03×10−12 g cm/cm2·s·Pa to 2.05 ×10−12 g cm/cm2·s·Pa, while the tensile strength was 29% higher than that of the uncross-linked film. However, excessive addition of CA in the composite films might solidify crystals on the film surface and have negative effects on their performance. This study provides a simple and effective pathway for preparation of polysaccharide-based films with improved properties, which have a potential as bioactive packaging material for food application.

Characterization of citrus pectin films integrated with clove bud essential oil: Physical, thermal, barrier, antioxidant and antibacterial properties

Abstract:The increasing demand for bio-based materials to be used in food packaging has stimulated the development of novel, environmentally-friendly edible films. Antimicrobial films were developed by incorporating different levels of clove bud essential oil (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) into the citrus pectin in order to modify the functional properties of the films. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry analysis (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed, together with the determination of physical, optical, mechanical, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of pectin emulsified films. The inclusion of oil significantly enhanced the water barrier properties of the films. Addition of oil leads to more opaque films with relatively heterogeneous microstructure, resulting in an increase in film opacity. The composite films were more resistant to breakage and more flexible than the control films. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that films incorporating CEO exhibited improved heat stability with slightly higher degradation temperature, compared with control films. The inhibitory effect of pectin films with CEO was also evaluated on three common foodborne bacteria. These results revealed that clove oil has a good potential to be incorporated into citrus pectin to make antimicrobial edible films or coatings for various food applications.
Chitosan film incorporated with citric acid and glycerol as an active packaging material for extension of green chilli shelf life

Abstract:Chitosan films with cross linker and plasticizer were prepared using solvent casting method for food packaging application. Citric acid was used as the cross linker which enhances the stability of the films. Glycerol was used as plasticizer which imparts flexibility. Successful cross linking was confirmed by Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR) spectra and incorporation of glycerol was seen clearly in the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) images. The modified films show an improved water resistance and transparency. An improved moisture barrier was also observed with a 5.5% and 29% reduction in water vapor transmission and water vapor permeability, respectively. Modified films showed drastic 12 times increase in the elongation percentage value, hence enhanced flexibility. However, the tensile strength and Young's modulus decreased substantially by 82% and 98%, respectively. The films also showed better thermal and antioxidant properties as compared to neat chitosan films and were found to enhance green chilli shelf life.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan with gum Arabic (CG) based novel functional films containing Cinnamomum camphora seeds extract (CCSE) at varying concentrations (0.5, 1.2 and 2% in w/w) were successfully fabricated. Moreover, sixteen phenolic compounds were identified by LC-ESI-QTOF-MS and the most abundant organic acid was citric acid (present at 1062.55 μg/g dry weight in CCSE). SEM showed that higher extract concentration indicated a homogeneous surface and more stability of films. CCSE inclusion into CG resulted in a marked increase (33.01 to 63.23 MPa) of tensile properties, with optimum thickness. The swelling degree, water solubility, and water vapor permeability were markedly (p < 0.05) reduced from 54.21 to 31.70%, 32.05 to 14.02%, and 3.46 to 1.12 × 10 −11 g −1 s −1 Pa −1 , respectively. The open control and CG samples showed much higher peroxide values of sunflower oil (69.49 ± 0.68 and 20.15 ± 0.31 mEq/kg, respectively) while CG-CCSE2 exhibited a low value (9.79 ± 0.28 mEq/kg) after 28 days incubation. Bilayer Polylactic Acid and Chitosan/Gelatin Film Containing Epigallocatechin Gallate Prepared through Solvent Casting and Electrospinning: Properties, Bioactivities and Release Kinetics

Abstract:This paper presents the development of biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging films. Active packaging bilayer films were prepared by combining chitosan-fish gelatin (CS-FG) with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) at varying concentrations on the top layer of polylactic acid (PLA) film via solvent casting (SC-films) or electrospinning (ES-films) technique. Incorporation of EGCG (0.5–2%) in films significantly increased tensile strength, film thickness, water vapor barrier properties, seal strength and antioxidant activities (P < 0.05), whereas swelling ability and light transmittance decreased (P < 0.05). Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed the intermolecular interaction among CS, FG and EGCG. The shift of some peaks was also recorded with the addition of EGCG. Films with higher levels of EGCG (2%) had greater antioxidant activities in both SC-films and ES-films (P < 0.05). Based on thermal analysis, both the bilayer films had lower thermal stability than the PLA film. Scanning electron microstructure revealed the smooth and compact structure of SC-films. On the other hand, ES-films had a network of compact fibers having a diameter of 160–190 nm. Both SC-films and ES-films showed the controlled release of EGCG following the Fickian diffusion-controlled release mechanism, but the latter exhibited a slower release rate. Thus, both films could serve as active packaging with antioxidant activity.
