Abstract:A surface‐textured film with self‐lubricating anti‐friction property is applied to TENGs for the first time to simultaneously reduce the coefficient of friction to an ultra‐low value (i.e., 0.195) and improve the electrical output by an order of magnitude. Subsequently, a textured film and self‐adapting contact synergized bidirectional rotary TENG (TAB‐TENG) is fabricated for wearable applications with remarkable durability. Sliding‐freestanding triboelectric nanogenerators (SF‐TENGs) are desirable for application in wearable power sources; however, improving their durability is the primary challenge. Meanwhile, few studies focus on enhancing the service life of tribo‐materials, especially from an anti‐friction perspective during dry operation. Herein, for the first time, a surface‐textured film with self‐lubricating property is introduced into the SF‐TENG as a tribo‐material, which is obtained by the self‐assembly of hollow SiO2 microspheres (HSMs) close to a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface under vacuum conditions. The PDMS/HSMs film with micro‐bump topography simultaneously reduces the dynamic coefficient of friction from 1.403 to 0.195 and increases the electrical output of SF‐TENG by an order of magnitude. Subsequently, a textured film and self‐adapting contact synergized bidirectional rotary TENG (TAB‐TENG) is developed, and the superiorities of the soft flat rotator with bidirectional reciprocating rotation are systematically investigated. The obtained TAB‐TENG exhibits a remarkable output stability and an outstanding mechanical durability over 350 000 cycles. Furthermore, a smart foot system for stepping energy harvesting and wireless walking states monitoring is realized. This study proposes a pioneering strategy for extending the lifetime of SF‐TENGs and advances it toward practical wearable applications.

Extraordinary-durable cylindrical rotary triboelectric nanogenerator based on CB/Fe 3 O 4 /PDMS microarrays for energy harvester

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with exceptionally durable energy harvesting performance are increasingly important in the pursuit of sustainable/renewable energy sources. However, the durability of frictional electricity material inevitably decreases due to material abrasion, which significantly hinders their real-world application. Here, robust and flexible films composed of CB/Fe 3 O 4 /PDMS and CB/Fe 3 O 4 /PDMS@Au microarrays have been employed as paired frictional electricity materials, wrapped around the surface of cylindrical electrodes to develop rotary TENG. When two rotary electrodes contact, the aforementioned paired microarrays intersect, causing overlapping friction. This leads to an increased contact electrified surface area, resulting in high output performance with a maximum peak power density reaching 16.2 mW m −2 . Importantly, the configuration of this rotary TENG described herein effectively prevents frictional material damage caused by friction. This is achieved by allowing free rolling movement instead of being fixed in a stationary position, thereby ensuring exceptional durability. Furthermore, the resulting rotary TENG shows exceptional biomechanical energy harvesting capability even after undergoing multiple rotations and experiencing friction for up to 100,000 cycles. The durable PDMS-based microarrays film exhibits great potential for flexible/wearable TENGs, highlighting their potential applications and impact on the field of sustainable energy harvesting technology.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), particularly those with high flexibility and sophisticated geometry, have shown great application foreground in portable and wearable electronics. However, traditional fabrication approaches remain complicated and non-versatile, which are also impractical in the preparation of complex shapes and structures. Herein, a one-pot coaxial direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technique has been proposed to fabricate a fully flexible single-electrode TENG (FFTENG) with sophisticated shapes and 3D structures for the purpose of harvesting and utilizing biomechanical energy. This FFTENG is made up of a silicone elastomer shell as the triboelectric layer and an inner silicone/carbon black (CB) core as the flexible electrode. Various factors that affect the output electric performance, including the ratio of the inner and outer diameter of the printed fiber, CB content, loading frequency, applied contact force, specimen size, and external load resistance, are investigated in detail via the contact-separation test. The results show that a standard square FFTENG with a size of 30 x 30 mm(2) can yield an open-circuit voltage (V-oc), a short-circuit current (I-sc) and a short-circuit transferred charge (Q(sc)) of as high as 60 V, 0.23 mu A and 58 nC, respectively, and a maximum output peak power density of 15.59 mW m(-2) at a matched resistance of 80 M Omega. More importantly, various shape-adaptable FFTENGs can be designed and tailored to meet the diverse needs of different applications, such as self-powered LED systems, self charging power systems, LED control devices, self-powered tactile sensors, flexible self-monitoring grip exercisers, and flexible self-powered keyboards, and open up new avenues for use in multifunctional self-powered electronic systems, including biomechanical energy harvesting and utilization, self-powered sensing and human-machine interaction.

Abstract:A novel bioinspired self‐lubricating triboelectric nanogenerator (BS‐TENG), employing a porous polyurethane matrix impregnated with a low‐viscosity dielectric lubricant, is proposed. The BS‐TENG enables a charge accumulation effect in response to external mechano‐stimuli to realize both high output performance (average power density of up to 4.6 W m−2) and long durability (over 60 000 cycles of continuous operation with retention of 99%). Recently through the synergetic utilization of triboelectrification, electrostatic induction, and electrostatic discharge, a novel dual‐functional triboelectric nanogenerator (DF‐TENG) has been developed, which can not only generate a motion‐responsible alternating current/ direct current output but also provide a higher performance compared to traditional TENGs. However, further improvements in performance and lifespan are crucial and remain challenging for the future large‐scale application of this new‐type TENG. Herein, a novel bioinspired self‐lubricating prototype is presented (BS‐TENG), which employs a porous polyurethane (PU) matrix impregnated with a low‐viscosity dielectric lubricant. In response to external mechanical stimuli, the BS‐TENG can "secrete" pre‐stored lubricant to partially fill micro‐gaps between tribo‐layers, thus forming self‐lubrication. This self‐lubricating mechanism not only elevates the electrostatic discharge threshold between tribo‐layers to maximize charge accumulation, thereby facilitating efficient energy release through electrostatic discharge for enhanced power output, but also significantly reduces material abrasion and realizes superior output durability. Benefiting from this effect, the BS‐TENG delivers an average power density of up to 4.6 W m−2, with extraordinary stability to retain 99% of its initial output even after over 60 000 cycles. This work provides a straightforward and effective strategy for realizing high‐performance and long‐stability TENGs, paving the way for their practical applications.

Abstract:Durable and sustainable energy harvesting in harsh environments using triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is a grand challenge. Herein, highly compacted and integrated TENGs are developed using dynamic supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO 2 ) foaming technique. The self-assembled internal-electrode TENG (SAI-TENG) which is consisted of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated internal metal electrode covered by a corrugated wrinkled foam (CWF) is readily obtained by the foaming process. The CWF can support itself and maintains air gaps to facilitate contact electrification and the biomimetic wrinkles that are induced by the scCO 2 flow field, greatly enhance the triboelectric output performance. By sandwiching the SAI-TENG using two internal-electrode PDMS films, a triple-electrode integrated self-supporting TENG (TIS-TENG), which has eight-friction layers in a single device, is developed. The TIS-TENG realized maximum utilization of the wrinkled CWF surface, which is equivalent to three parallel connected TENGs. Moreover, the output was further boosted by adding tea powders and patterning micro domes on the PDMS films, which resulted in a high Voc of 106.3 V and a power density of 32.5 mW/m 2 . Attributing to the embedded electrode and high elasticity of CWF, the TIS-TENG has remarkable stability and tolerance to harsh conditions and can be used as self-powered sensors for monitoring vehicle parking and working conditions of workers. This work provides new insights into the green fabrication and development of highly integrated self-supporting TENGs with high performance and durability.

Abstract:The first double-sided self-supporting triboelectric nanogenerator (DS-TENG) with high durability and output performance is developed. A sustainable and scalable supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) foaming technique is used to fabric porous composite thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) foams with regular bumps and valleys by embedding a stainless steel mesh (SSM) inside. When packaged using two silicone rubber films, the DS-TENG realizes simultaneous utilization of both sides of the composite foam and effectively prevents the SSM electrode from erosion, which significantly enhances the output performance and durability while maintaining high flexibility. The working mechanism of the DS-TENG is elaborated by manipulating the structure of the composite foam via changing the mesh grid and the foaming conditions. Attributing to the wear resistance of the comprising materials and compact device configuration, the DS-TENG exhibits exceptional durability and long-term stability. Moreover, the DS-TENG demonstrates tremendous potential in self-powered sensing of pressing and bending, monitoring human walking and sitting behaviors, and assisting pugilist training. This work provides a new design of compact self-supporting TENGs with reliable long-term performance and paves a cost-effective approach for green and scale fabrication of TENGs.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has received tremendous attention in ambient energy harvesting, especially for ocean wave energy. However, the technology is generally challenged to obtain excellent durability and high efficiency simultaneously, which primarily overshadows their further industrial-scale applications. Here, a dual-mode and frequency multiplied TENG with ultrahigh durability and efficiency for ultralow frequency mechanical energy harvesting via the elastic connection and soft contact design is proposed. By introducing the spring and flexible dielectric fluff to the novel pendulum-like structural design, the surface triboelectric charges of TENG are replenished in soft contact mode under the intermittent mechanical excitation, while the robustness and durability are enhanced in non-contact working mode. The fabricated TENG results in a continuous electrical output for 65 s by one stimulus with a high energy conversion efficiency, as well as negligible change of output performance after a total of 2 000 000 cycles. Moreover, integrated with the power management circuit, the TENG array is demonstrated to drive the electronics by effectively harvesting wind and water wave energy as a sustainable energy source. This work paves a new pathway to enhance the robustness, durability, and efficiency of the TENG that resolves the bottleneck of its practical applications and industrialization.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising strategy for harvesting low frequency mechanical energy. However, the bottlenecks of limited electric output by air/dielectric breakdown and poor durability by material abrasion seriously restrict its further improvement. Herein, we propose a liquid lubrication promoted sliding mode TENG to address both issues. Liquid lubrication greatly reduces interface material abrasion, and its high breakdown strength and charge transmission effect further enhance device charge density. Besides, the potential decentralization design by the voltage balance bar effectively suppresses the dielectric breakdown. In this way, the average power density up to 87.26 W·m -2 ·Hz -1 , energy conversion efficiency of 48%, and retention output of 90% after 500,000 operation cycles are achieved, which is the highest average power density and durability currently. Finally, a cell phone is charged to turn on by a palm-sized TENG device at 2 Hz within 25 s. This work has a significance for the commercialization of TENG-based self-powered systems.

Abstract:As an emerging technology to convert environmental high‐entropy energy into electrical energy, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has great demands for further enhancing the service lifetime and output performance in practical applications. Here, an ultra‐robust and high performance rotational triboelectric nanogenerator (R‐TENG) by bearing charge pumping is proposed. The R‐TENG composes of a pumping TENG (P‐TENG), an output TENG (O‐TENG), a voltage‐multiplying circuit (VMC), and a buffer capacitor. The P‐TENG is designed with freestanding mode based on a rolling ball bearing, which can also act as the rotating mechanical energy harvester. The output low charge from the P‐TENG is accumulated and pumped to the non‐contact O‐TENG, which can simultaneously realize ultralow mechanical wear and high output performance. The matched instantaneous power of R‐TENG is increased by 32 times under 300 r/min. Furthermore, the transferring charge of R‐TENG can remain 95% during 15 days (6.4×106 cycles) continuous operation. This work presents a realizable method to further enhance the durability of TENG, which would facilitate the practical applications of high‐performance TENG in harvesting distributed ambient micro mechanical energy.

Abstract:Utilizing the static friction of the rolling rod/ball is an effective strategy to address the mechanical durability in sliding mode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), but its line/point contact seriously reduces the output performance. Herein, a high output and ultra‐durable TENG is achieved by a rolling belt method. Compared with the previous rolling rod mode TENG (R‐TENG), the electric output performance of the rolling belt mode TENG (RB‐TENG) increases nearly 3.8 times. The maximum output power density of RB‐TENG reaches ≈280 W m‐2 with self‐charge excitation and power management, and its charge density is the highest among all sliding mode TENGs without sliding friction including rolling rod/ball mode and noncontact freestanding mode. Furthermore, the RB‐TENG remains nearly 98.5% of its output performance after more than 4 100 000 cycles, which is the highest stability measured in such a long time by now, with material abrasion quality 6.42 µg·g‐1 (<1% of traditional sliding TENG) every 10 000 cycles. This work provides an effective strategy for solving the bottleneck issues of mechanical abrasion in sliding mode TENGs. A general strategy that can significantly increase mechanical durability and power output performance of sliding mode triboelectric nanogenerators is achieved by converting the interface sliding friction into static friction.

Abstract:A non‐contact triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with a double charge supplement is constructed by only introducing two charge brushes with low friction coefficients to achieve a high average power density and impressive durability, which paves the way for using TENG to power the broad practical electrical appliances during long‐term operation. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), a promising energy harvesting technology for distributed power sources, faces inevitable issues regarding long‐term wear and durability. However, current low‐wear TENGs are impaired by lower performances due to low charge density. Here, both issues are addressed using a double charge supplement TENG (DCS‐TENG). Adding two low friction charge brushes allows the DCS‐TENG to achieve a high surface charge density (76.5 μC m−2) and power density (697.5 mW m−2 Hz–1), setting a new record among previously reported low‐wear TENGs. Moreover, the device exhibits unprecedented durability with an attenuation of only 5% after continuous operation for 110 h (3 960 000 cycles). Using a customized energy management module, a 3 × 7 hygrothermograph array, a high‐power vehicle's radar and accelerometer modules are stably powered, demonstrating the DCS‐TENG's strong electrical load capacity. This strategy provides a facile and effective path to conjointly boost power output and durability of TENGs, taking them to the next level for practical applications.

Abstract:This work reports a rotational triboelectric nanogenerator coupling an ingenious central charge injection by soft‐contact with a suspended electrostatic induction mode, achieving exceptional output performance and durability in mechanical energy harvesting. The new design is expected to extend the charge pumping‐based TENGs to a wide range of long‐term operations and high‐performance power generation, which is expected to immediately attract interest from academia and industry. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) represents a burgeoning approach for harvesting ambient mechanical energy. However, practical applications suffer from the issues of insufficient charge density and material abrasion. Here, a rotational TENG that attains exceptional output performance and durability in mechanical energy harvesting and couples an ingenious coplanar charge pump by soft contact with a suspended electrostatic induction mode is presented. Thanks to the continuous and synchronous charge injection from the central charge pumping unit, the charge density can be up to 74.62 μC m−2, resulting in an outstanding peak power density of 20.72 W m−2. Moreover, the utilization of yielding polyester fur in the charge pumping unit as a tribo‐layer for soft contact decreases the material abrasion and then enhances durability and robustness. And the experimental results show that the TENG can maintain 99.2% electrical output after 100 000 operating cycles. With the optimized design, the prototype can continuously drive four commercial lamps rated 12 W in series. Furthermore, a wireless powering system is demonstrated to power the electronics, demonstrating an extensive application of the TENG. Given the compelling characteristics, this work is expected to provide a sound strategy for improving TENGs' output and durability in the field of self‐powered sensor systems.

Abstract:The unlimited point contact rolling motion of the particles replaces planar contact of film to improve durability of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Here, a high durable ferromagnetic metal particle‐based TENG is proposed and a self‐powered mass sensor is achieved for dynamic monitoring of powder mass. Rotary sliding mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) provides high efficiency, a continuous and high output strategy for harvesting low‐frequency mechanical energy. However, poor durability owing to material abrasion during sliding restricts its practical application. Here, a novel ferromagnetic metal particle‐based triboelectric nanogenerator (FMP‐TENG) is proposed, which couples the unlimited point contact rolling motion of particles instead of planar contact of film to improve durability of TENG. Besides, due to the extensively enhanced contact area by ferromagnetic metal particles, FMP‐TENG improves its electric output, achieving a charge density of 103 μC m−2 and a peak power density of 400 mW m−2 Hz−1. After 10 000 cycle running‐in, FMP‐TENG exhibits excellent durability, which retains 97% of the output charge for 110 000 cycles. In addition, a metal powder mass sensor based on FMP‐TENG is also designed, which can effectively detect mass change in ferromagnetic metal powder in a dynamic mechanical platform. A novel strategy is proposed here to solve the problem of durability of sliding TENG in practical applications.

Largely Improving the Robustness and Lifetime of Triboelectric Nanogenerators Through Automatic Transition Between Contact and Noncontact Working States

Abstract:Although a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been developed to be an efficient approach to harvest mechanical energy, its robustness and lifetime are still to be improved through an effective and widely applicable way. Here, we show a rational designing methodology for achieving a significant improvement of the long-term stability of TENGs through automatic transition between contact and noncontact working states. This is realized by structurally creating two opposite forces in the moving part of the TENG, in which the pulling-away force is controlled by external mechanical motions. In this way, TENGs can work in the noncontact state with minimum surface wear and also transit into contact state intermittently to maintain high triboelectric charge density. A wind-driven disk-based TENG and a rotary barrel-based TENG that can realize automatic state transition under different wind speeds and rotation speeds, respectively, have been demonstrated as two examples, in which their robustness has been largely improved through this automatic transition. This methodology will further expand the practical application of TENGs for long-time usage and for harvesting mechanical energies with fluctuating intensities.
A Sustainable and Flexible Microbrush‐Faced Triboelectric Generator for Portable/Wearable Applications

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are put forward as a state-of-the-art energy-scavenging technology for self-powered electronics, but their severe wear and degradation driven by inevitable friction can pose significant durability and sustainability concerns. Here, an array of microfibers is reported that functions as a robust and sustainable TENG in both in-plane sliding and vertical contact-separation modes, with excellent electrical potential as high as 20 V and a high cyclability of 3000. The design flexibility of this microbrush TENG (MB-TENG) on the counter materials facilitates the further improvement of electrical outputs, benefiting numerous applications of human-interactive triboelectrification. Significantly, these MB-TENGs offer sufficient output power for successfully driving a smartwatch as well as an electromyography module. This technology uses a simple and cost-effective manner to provide a robust and reliable monolithic TENG module, which is expected to serve as a promising energy-harvesting source for self-powered electronics in the near future.

Abstract:The sliding‐mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) exhibits higher charge transfer efficiency for extracting mechanical energy than the contact–separation mode TENG, but the energy loss induced by air breakdown as well as the inferior durability seriously limits its practical applications. Here, an effective strategy via interface liquid lubrication is proposed for enhancing output performance of both sliding‐mode alternative current TENG (AC‐TENG) and direct current TENG (DC‐TENG). Due to the improved breakdown field strength requirement and reduced electrostatic field strength in the microgap between the triboelectric layer and electrode, interface liquid lubrication suppresses the interfacial electrostatic breakdown and reduces charge loss after the triboelectrification process, and thus more electrostatic charges are harvested by the AC‐TENG via electrostatic induction and the DC‐TENG via electrostatic breakdown. The maximum output power density of the lubricated sliding‐mode TENG is enhanced by more than 50% (3.45 W m−2 Hz−1) compared to the device without lubrication, and shows excellent durability over more than 500 000 operation cycles. This work provides an effective approach to improve the electric performance and durability of sliding‐mode AC‐TENG and DC‐TENG, which further promotes the practical applications of TENGs.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been developed as innovative devices for harvesting various forms of mechanical energy generated by our bodies and surroundings, which provide green and sustainable power for increasingly miniaturized and mobile electronics, especially wearables. In this article, the largest possible output energy per cycle of a TENG in the two basic working modes, namely, the vertical contact-separation (CS) mode and the contact-sliding (LS) mode, is analyzed and the energy collected by a capacitor is tested. It is found that more energy output and collected from a vertical CS mode TENG than that from a LS mode TENG with the same size and triboelectric layer materials when the size and displacement range of the TENG are suitable for a wearable energy harvesting device. In order to improve the energy output of a TENG, three methods have been proposed to increase its surface charge density, such as adding a BaTiO 3 film or a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-BaTiO 3 composite film between the triboelectric layer and the metal electrode, and using a PDMS-BaTiO 3 composite film as a negative triboelectric layer, and corresponding TENGs are fabricated for experimental testing. These measures have effectively enhanced the output of the TENGs.

Abstract:Although the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been proven to be a renewable and effective route for ambient energy harvesting, its robustness remains a great challenge due to the requirement of surface friction for a decent output, especially for the in-plane sliding mode TENG. Here, we present a rationally designed TENG for achieving a high output performance without compromising the device robustness by, first, converting the in-plane sliding electrification into a contact separation working mode and, second, creating an automatic transition between a contact working state and a noncontact working state. The magnet-assisted automatic transition triboelectric nanogenerator (AT-TENG) was demonstrated to effectively harness various ambient rotational motions to generate electricity with greatly improved device robustness. At a wind speed of 6.5 m/s or a water flow rate of 5.5 L/min, the harvested energy was capable of lighting up 24 spot lights (0.6 W each) simultaneously and charging a capacitor to greater than 120 V in 60 s. Furthermore, due to the rational structural design and unique output characteristics, the AT-TENG was not only capable of harvesting energy from natural bicycling and car motion but also acting as a self-powered speedometer with ultrahigh accuracy. Given such features as structural simplicity, easy fabrication, low cost, wide applicability even in a harsh environment, and high output performance with superior device robustness, the AT-TENG renders an effective and practical approach for ambient mechanical energy harvesting as well as self-powered active sensing.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) that can efficiently harvest ubiquitous mechanical energy provide a promising technology for the energy supply of intelligent electronic devices. However, the issues of low durability induced by wear and moisture sensibility of TENGs greatly limit their practical applications. Here, a no-wear dual-capacitor enhancement system (DCES) to simultaneously improve the service lifetime and electric performance of TENGs in a high humidity environment is proposed. The combination of low charge injection from lightly touched TENG and charge transfer in no-wear DCES can synchronously realize ultralow material wear and charge pumping up. Therefore, the dual-capacitor-enhanced TENG (DCE-TENG) achieves a long service life of at least 1 000 000 cycles with 15-fold enhancement of matched average power. Furthermore, owing to the humidity resistance of DCES, the output performance of DCE-TENG remains 95% of the initial value in 90% humidity. This work is expected to promote the commercial applications of TENGs.

Abstract:A submillimeter‐scale superlubric TENG is reported. The frictional properties are systematically investigated at different parameters, in which a submillimeter‐scale (130 μm) superlubricity state (μ = 0.0084) is achieved at 4 N, 2 Hz, and nitrogen atmosphere. Meanwhile, the SS‐TENG has a maximum power density of 3 mW m‐2, which can remain stable at the superlubric condition. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for mechanical energy harvesting has been regarded as one of the most prospective energy technologies for the new era. However, inevitable material wear during triboelectrification results in output reduction and even failure of the TENG. In this work, a submillimeter‐scale superlubric TENG (SS‐TENG) is reported that enables ultra‐low friction coefficient (μ) and stable power generation. By using the micro/nano‐processing technology, the interdigital electrodes are embedded into the dielectric layer as a flat surface, on which the highly‐hydrogenated diamond‐like carbon (PLC) is deposited as the triboelectric layer to effectively reduce the friction coefficient. The frictional properties are systematically investigated at different parameters, in which a submillimeter‐scale (130 μm) superlubricity state (μ = 0.0084) is achieved at 4 N, 2 Hz and nitrogen atmosphere. Meanwhile, the SS‐TENG has a maximum power density of 3 mW m−2, which can remain stable at the superlubric condition. This work has first realized the freestanding‐mode superlubric TENG in submillimeter scale and provided a viable strategy for the development of long‐lifetime TENG, which may have great applications in frictional energy recovery from mechanical components, human joint motion, and the natural environment.
