Abstract:Abstract Background In recent years, there has been an increased utilization of emergency departments (EDs) in many countries. Additionally, it is reported that there are major delays in delivering care to ED patients. Longer waiting times are associated with poor patient satisfaction, whereas an understanding of the triage process increases satisfaction. This study aimed to assess ED visitor’s awareness of the triage procedure and their preferences regarding delayed communication. Methods Cross-sectional study of King Abdulaziz Medical City – Emergency Department visitors using a previously validated questionnaire (Seibert 2014) which was translated to Arabic, piloted, and then used for this study. Results A total of 334 questionnaires were returned. The mean age of respondents was 33 years. Regarding primary care physicians, only 16% of respondents said that they have one. About 21% of those tried to communicate with them before coming to the ED. Even though only 11% of respondents knew exactly what triage is, 51% were able to correctly explain why some patients are seen before others. Statistical analysis did not show any factors that are associated with increased knowledge of triage. Most respondents (75%) want to hear updates regarding delays with 69% of them preferring to be updated every 30 min. Conclusions This study showed that the majority of patients do not know what triage means and that most of them want to know how the ED works. Moreover, a lot of respondents said that they do not have a primary care physician. These results support increasing patient awareness by education and involving them if any delay happens.

Abstract:The emergency department (ED) is an important component of a healthcare system. Increased rates of visiting the ED, even for non-urgent cases, makes it necessary to prioritize patients who require immediate care over those who can wait. This process is called triage. However, although triage helps to deliver efficient service for the more needy patients, it results in delays for others, who may be left unsatisfied as a result. The aim of this research is therefore to assess the public awareness about triage in the ED and its importance in delivering improvements in healthcare in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To this end, a cross-sectional research method was adopted to conduct a study on the Saudi population between the periods from 01 November 2022 to 31 November 2022. The study used a self-administrated, validated and translated electronic questionnaire. SPSS software version 23 was used for data analysis. The study included 2056 participants, who reported the major causes for the last ED visit to be abdominal pain (26.4%) and headaches (14.4%). The mean ± standard deviation (SD) score of knowledge was 8.79 ± 2.13. Moreover, this mean significantly differed between educational levels (p ˂ 0.001), current jobs (p = 0.001), and residence (p ˂ 0.001). The majority (82.9%) reported that increasing the working hours of primary healthcare (PHC) centers would reduce the ED’s crowdedness. The data thus showed there was inadequate knowledge and some gaps regarding triage in the ED among the public population in Saudi Arabia. Abstract:Objective: This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of non-urgent cases, investigate gender and age preferences, and explore factors influencing individuals' selection of the emergency department (ED) for non-urgent cases in the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: From July 15, 2022, to December 31, 2022, a structured online questionnaire via a Google Docs survey collected data. The study sampled 425 patients from two prominent Al-Qassim healthcare institutions: Buraydah King Fahad Specialized Hospital and Buraydah Central Hospital. Encompassing patients aged 20 to 80 admitted to the ED between 8:00 and 16:00, concurrent with primary healthcare center availability, the study categorized participants by urgency using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) criteria. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and probit regression in R version 4.3.3, with a significance level of p < 0.05 for result interpretation. Results: In Al-Qassim in 2022, 82.4% of ED visitors sought care for non-urgent cases, while 17.6% sought care for urgent cases. No statistically significant relationship was found between age and gender and urgent ED visits. Among those with non-urgent conditions, the top reasons for bypassing primary healthcare services were slow treatment (52.7%), lack of knowledge about primary healthcare (PHC) services (33.9%), and appointment unavailability (5.5%). Evaluation of awareness of the ED triage system showed a significant difference only among patients with excellent awareness. Conclusion: The investigation found a higher prevalence of non-urgent cases, especially among females. Challenges in appointment booking, accessibility, and the perception of urgency were key factors leading patients to choose the emergency department over PHC centers. The study emphasized the crucial role of ED triage system awareness and the impact of satisfaction with PHC services on healthcare-seeking behavior, with younger individuals less likely to visit the ED and males more inclined at specific satisfaction levels.

The Electronic Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (E-CTAS) is a popular system that categorizes patients into five levels to manage patient flow and prioritize patient access to health-care services. Methods: We assessed the factors that influence E-CTAS usage in emergency departments in Eastern Saudi Arabia. Seventy-one nurses were included from two emergency departments that adopted E-CTAS. We used the technology acceptance model (TAM) to assess the influencing factors. The TAM was reliable in the study setting (Cronbach's α = 0.87). Results: All of the TAM domains were significantly related to the usage of E-CTAS: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, importance of training, social influence, behavior intention, and attitude. We also showed that E-CTAS use significantly increased with years of experience and training. Discussion: Many factors influenced the use of this electronic triage system. Focusing on these factors in future electronic triage system implementations might increase the hospital staff's compliance, thus improving accuracy and better organizing the patient flow in emergency departments. Abstract:Highlights : Emergency department need essentisl careful assessment as it deal with acute, urgent health situations so should have high skilled well trained staff. Aims : Study involves assessing the emergency nurse's knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding the practical obstacles that impede nurses from working in the Emergency Departement and taking necessary measures to resolve them. Material and Method : The current study was a cross-sectional study conducted upon (400) nurses. Questionnaire form to assess nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practice in Mosul's teaching hospitals / Iraq related to working in the Emergency Departement. The acceptability score was established at 61.2 mark / 85%; less than this limit was considered unsatisfied as degree 85% (61.2 marks) was considered as acceptable. The data were surveyed applying the (SPSS version 25) descriptive and inferential statistics. Result : The study showed that there were statistically significant differences in the level of knowledge. The mean ± S.D of the knowledge was (33.15 ± 11) . The mean of practice was (23±9). The majority of nurses was in the accepted level 196 (49%) and statistically highly significant P-value was 0.01. Attitude answering questions show high agreement on questions (Number of the good training staff is essential in the emergency department? , and Handwashing is necessary before preparation and administration? ) with answers percentage are [ 96.25% and 93.75% respectively]. The difference between nurses was highly significant p-value was 0.001. Conclusion : This study concluded that the awareness or knowledge of nurses is satisfactory with the level of attitude and practice with respect to Emergency Department

Abstract:Introduction Globally, injuries account for 9% of all deaths, with road accidents contributing to approximately a quarter of these fatalities. A major concern is the inadequacy of pre-hospital care (emergency medical services provided before arrival at a hospital) and delays in transportation to medical facilities, identified as leading causes of preventable injury-related deaths. This study explores the experiences of emergency health professionals (EHPs) in peri -hospital services (emergency medical services provided immediately upon arrival and within the hospital setting). Methods A qualitative exploratory design, underpinned by Van Manen's (1990) descriptive phenomenological principles, was used. Thirty EHPs from five central and southern Jordanian emergency departments were purposefully sampled, including physicians, nurses, and paramedics from both emergency departments and pre-hospital services. Results Two primary themes emerged: (1) In Search of Clarity: The Unsettled Journey of Pre-hospital Emergency Care Providers; (2) Frustrations on the Frontline: Role Ambiguity and Emotional Exhaustion in Trauma Care, with EHPs reporting fluid and unclear roles, physical and verbal abuse, and limited authority in critical interventions. Conclusion The study highlights several service lapses in peri -hospital care that negatively impact healthcare professionals, posing risks to patient safety. These findings urge decision-makers to devise actionable strategies to rectify these deficiencies, enhancing care quality and thereby decreasing injury-induced mortality and morbidity.

Abstract:Introduction: Triage is crucial in patient screening within emergency departments (EDs) worldwide. It is one of the essential and standard medical practices in many developed countries. However, in India, there is a need for improvement in triage utilization, as it is predominantly performed by resident doctors or medical officers, leading to an uneven distribution of clinical skills among healthcare providers (HCPs). A comprehensive analysis incorporating literature review and data collection revealed that while mandatory screening is conducted in most Indian EDs, the formal implementation of standardized triage protocols remains limited. Like in developed countries, registered nurses or nursing officers (NOs) can be effectively trained and directed to play the role of dedicated triage personnel in EDs of most of the healthcare facilities in India. Method and materials: This study aimed to examine the current state of triage utilization and its impact on the distribution of responsibilities among HCPs in Indian EDs. Through this online survey, the investigators assessed the knowledge and practical understanding of clinical triaging among NOs, working at various hospitals nationwide. Results: The participants included 5,029 NOs working in various parts of India, predominantly nursing graduates (82.52%), the majority being employed in government healthcare settings (84.01%) and most having over five years of cumulative working experience in the ED (70.77%). Nurses showed inadequate knowledge and awareness about the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) used for quick initial evaluation (62.18% among all participants). Concerning the complete triage process applicable, especially in pediatric ED settings, they had even less satisfactory knowledge and understanding, e.g., identifying primary (28.27%) and secondary (22.69%) survey components via focused history and examination, properly using temperature assessment (23.32%) and instant blood glucose level assessment (22.95%) in triage, and knowing various types of internationally accepted triage systems for ED-based health facilities such as the Emergency Severity Index (ESI), Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS), and Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) (15.87%). ANOVA and post hoc analysis revealed that the intergroup performance of the study participants with maximum correct responses to the knowledge-determining specified subset of the questionnaire depicts the significantly higher role of graduate nursing degree over diploma such as General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)/Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) qualification, working in government hospital versus private setup, and ED working experience of >5 years over that of <5 years. Conclusions: Of the participants in the study, 50% were not evaluated for cognitive or psychomotor domains during their assessment examinations. The research illuminated a significant disparity in knowledge and proficiency levels among Indian nurses concerning pediatric triage, especially with the ability to effectively apply the PAT for initial patient evaluations, discern components of primary and secondary surveys, and comprehend various triage systems. This study underscores the importance of comprehensive reform in the Indian healthcare system and teaching curriculum by emphasizing clinical triage training and interprofessional collaboration, and establishing guidelines and regulations to ensure consistent and standardized triage practices across all EDs.

Abstract:Background: Effective communication between healthcare practitioners and patients in the emergency department (ED) is crucial for patient satisfaction and quality of care. This study explored patients' perspectives on communication with nurses and physicians in the ED. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a sample of 159 patients to assess the type of information relayed by nurses and doctors. The interview data were analyzed to examine nursing staff communication, physician communication, and communication difficulties. Results: Nurses were found to be less likely to inform patients about their results or disposition. While 81.2% of physicians introduced themselves to patients, only 51.6% stated their status level. Approximately 68.6% of subjects were offered analgesia or treatment, and 60% reported no communication difficulties with medical staff. Empathy was demonstrated by 54.2% of healthcare practitioners, and nearly 80% of patient encounters were conducted in understandable language. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of effective communication in the ED, including empathy, information provision, and language barriers. To improve patient satisfaction and healthcare quality, medical organizations should develop comprehensive work plans, provide communication skills workshops, and enhance the ED work environment. Future research should focus on the perspectives of medical staff and explore communication in larger samples and various contexts.
Factors Affecting Length of Stays in the Emergency Department of a Teaching Hospital: A Retrospective Study From Najran, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Reducing the frequency of emergency department (ED) patient visits for treatment, particularly in urgent instances, is a global healthcare objective. Additionally, a more extended stay in the ED can harm a patient's prognosis during later hospitalization. This study aims to investigate the factors affecting the length of stay in the ED in a teaching hospital. Methods: A retrospective chart review study was done between January 1, 2021, and February 31, 2021, involving 122 adult patients who had delayed ED visits to King Khalid Hospital in Najran, Saudi Arabia. Data on the patient's characteristics, visit time, and the causes for the delay based on the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) were gathered and analyzed. Factors associated with more than six hours of delay were investigated in a univariate analysis. Result: The mean age was 52.3 ±13.5 years, and 42 (34.4%) were more than 65 years of age. More than half of the study population were female (n=66; 54.1%). Most delays occurred among CTAS 4 and 5 cases (47.5%), and 22 (18.0%) occurred during holidays. The mean delay time was 6.1 ±1.8 hours. The leading delay causes were multiple consultations with further investigations (37.7%) and conflict between the teams (36.1%). In univariate analysis, ED visiting at holiday time (OR: 0.14; 95% CI: 0.04-0.40, p <0.001) and CTAS 4 and 5 (OR: 2.22; 95% CI: 0.95-5.30, p = 0.003) significantly had more delay. Factors associated with delay in univariate analysis were multiple consultations with further investigations (OR: 2.82; 95% CI: 1.32-6.26, p = 0.013), various assessments in different ED areas with a late arrival of the specialist (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.20-0.91, p = 0.042), and conflict between the teams (OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.17-5.54, p = 0.031). Conclusion: In this study, multiple assessments in different ED areas and conflict between the teams were the main factors that caused delays in ED. Implementing a timeframe monitoring system for consultations while emphasizing accelerated decision-making and disposition for patients and understanding teamwork collaboration may reduce patients' length of stay in the ED. Implementing these strategies and evaluating their impact on the length of stay in the ED requires further investigation.

Abstract:Nurses have a critical role in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety. This necessitates gaining knowledge and mastering QI abilities to lead and participate in QI programs in clinical practice. To assess undergraduate nursing students' knowledge about QI, and experience of patient safety situation; and examine the relationship between obtaining information on healthcare quality and knowledge about QI in Jordan. A descriptive cross-sectional correlational design was used. The study engaged undergraduate nursing students from two Jordanian universities (Public and private universities). A convenient sample of 147 nursing undergraduate students from universities. Data were collected using paper-based self-reported questionnaires. The Quality Improvement Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (QulSKA) survey and the Healthcare Professional Patient Safety Assessment Curriculum Survey (HPPSACS) were used to assess knowledge about QI and patient safety. Out of 152 students, 147 completed the study. Overall, QI knowledge was moderate (mean score 57.7). Students from the private university scored significantly higher than public university students. Regarding patient safety, 74.8% of students observed medical errors in clinical areas. However, only 57.1% of the students disclosed a medical error to a faculty member. Also, the results showed a significant positive correlation between knowledge level about QI and obtaining information about QI, quality in healthcare, and patient safety from sources other than the undergraduate nursing program at universities ( p ≤.001). This study suggests a potential gap in QI education. Integrating QI concepts into nursing curricula may be necessary to prepare future nurses for healthcare quality improvement.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction Hospital performance is significantly affected by external factors (political and economic) rather than internal factors (effectiveness and efficiency). Emergency department (ED) overcrowding is a significant issue for emergency care services globally, characterized by a rising number of visits and persistent unsolved issues, resulting in increased challenges faced by ED staff and decreased patient satisfaction. This study aimed to explore the obstacles and challenges that cause variation in ED quality indicators (QIs) based on five domains: infrastructure, population, workflow, workforce, and administration. Methods A tertiary emergency center in Saudi Arabia administered a questionnaire with standardized measures to 180 nurses, using a cross-sectional descriptive design. Results Most nurses (75.5%) believed that crowded waiting rooms in the ED were the most influential factor affecting QIs. Many other challenges were identified, including bed capacity, triage area/workflow, increased volume during peak periods, demand for nonemergency visits, staff and shortages. Significant differences in nurses’ responses were found on the basis of education level (for infrastructure only, p = 0.004), specialty (for nursing administration only, p = 0.052), and ED experience (for all variables, p = 0.008–0.039). Conclusion The analysis uncovered various critical aspects of infrastructure, workflow, population, workforce, and nursing administration that have a major effect on patient flow in the ED. Comprehending these aspects will greatly affect the quality measures of ED performance and assist policymakers in formulating strategic plans to enhance ED performance. Therefore, successful implementation and optimization of ED resources depend greatly on considering the right decision variables and resource restrictions.

Abstract:Purpose: Lack of knowledge and practical skills on triage remains a global problem, especially within rural hospitals, and very little is known about enhancing the knowledge and skills of emergency nursing staff in rural hospitals of South Africa. The objective was to describe the perceived strategies for enhancing knowledge and practices of triage among nurses working in the emergency departments (EDs) of rural hospitals in South Africa. Research methods: A descriptive qualitative research design was applied to achieve the research objective. A non-probability sampling method was applied to select 17 professional nurses from rural hospitals. An unstructured face-to-face interview method was used to collect data. Data collected were analyzed using Tesch’s method of data analysis. Results: The study findings highlighted the academic needs of nurses working in the ED of rural hospitals. Two themes emerged from this study; (1) The consistent description of the importance of triage training for emergency unit staff, and (2) The description of measures to enhance triage practices amongst emergency unit staff. Findings indicated that triage knowledge and practice remains a challenge, but with formulated strategies like continuous training by workshops, refresher courses, and offering a training module on triage, evaluation of developed guidelines and benchmarks is often enhanced. Conclusions: The study describes the strategies to enhance the conversion of knowledge and practice of triage amongst nurses working in the ED of rural hospitals. The paper argues that the knowledge and practical skills of nurses working in ED are enhanced through the provision of continuous training as workshops, triage module, evaluating the developed guidelines to implement triage, and benchmarking with other hospitals.

Abstract:Aims: Accurate triage decisions by emergency room nurses are pivotal for patient prognosis and efficient utilization of resources. This study aimed to identify teaching methods, contents, intervention characteristics, and initial consideration of educational design for the development of triage education, targeting triage nurses. Design: A scoping review. Data sources: PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, and RISS were searched for studies in either English or Korean, regardless of publication year. Review methods: The review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Studies published before November 15, 2023 were selected, based on the following index terms in each database: nurses, triage, education, and emergency services, hospital. Results: Of the 20 studies included in this review, five focused on severity classification of patients with cardiovascular diseases, one addressed infectious diseases, two examined pediatric patients, one explored patients with trauma, and the remaining eleven were not limited to specific diseases. Eleven studies (55 %) employed face-to-face (offline) education, whereas six (30 %) used non-face-to-face (online) education. The teaching methods were classified as teacher-centered learning and student-centered learning. The educational strategies included in-person lectures, online classes, demonstrations, simulations, mobile technology or web-based programs, group discussions, role-plays, and flipped learning. Outcome variables, such as triage accuracy, knowledge, performance ability, self-efficacy, satisfaction, wait time, and competency were measured as intervention effects. Conclusions: This review demonstrates the key characteristics and contents of triage education interventions, along with key considerations in the initial design stages. Triage education covers a wide range of contents and diverse teaching methods pertinent to severity classification in triage practice. Effective educational programs hinge on the meticulous planning of objectives, optimal selection of the target population, needs assessment, and suitable teaching methods and materials. Future triage education for emergency room nurses should be tailored to specific participants while anticipating and planning all potential circumstances of implementation.
An Online-Based Survey to Assess Knowledge, Attitudes, and Barriers to Perform First Aid after Road Accidents Conducted among Adult Jordanians

Abstract:(1) Background: First aid administered during road accidents can save millions of lives. However, the knowledge and attitudes of the Jordanian population towards first aid are lacking. This study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to performing first aid among the Jordanian population during road accidents. (2) Methods: An online questionnaire was developed and distributed using various Jordanian social media platforms. The questionnaire collected the participants' sociodemographic details and assessed their first aid knowledge, attitudes toward first aid, and barriers preventing the participants from performing first aid in emergencies. (3) Results: 732 participants participated in this study. The median knowledge score regarding first aid items was 9 (7–10) out of the maximum possible score of 15. The median first aid attitude score was 24 (22–27) out of a maximum possible score of 30. The most commonly reported barrier to performing first aid among the participants was "lack of first aid training" (76.78%), followed by "lack of knowledge about first aid" (75.81%) and "fear of performing first aid" (57.51%). The participants with lower income levels exhibited more negative attitudes towards first aid (4). Conclusions: This study underscores the urgent need for enhanced first aid training and awareness in Jordan. The participants' first-aid knowledge overall was limited, although positive attitudes toward first-aid delivery were observed. The findings emphasize the need for regular and structured first-aid training courses, addressing barriers such as fear and misinformation and ensuring accessibility across all socioeconomic levels to improve preparedness for road traffic accidents and other emergencies. This comprehensive approach can better equip the Jordanian population to effectively manage emergencies and improve public health outcomes.

Patient satisfaction with nursing triage care in hospital emergency departments: Scoping review

Abstract:Introduction: Perceived quality of patient care is essential in healthcare, particularly in hospital emergency departments (EDs), where the triage process, performed by nurses, is fundamental yet under-researched. The aim is to explore patient satisfaction in triage, identify improvement opportunities, and provide guidance for future research to enhance ED care. Methodology: A scoping review was conducted across databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane, Joanna Briggs, Google, and Google Scholar. Empirical articles from January 2014 to December 2023 were selected, excluding non-face-to-face triage, pediatrics, and aspects not related to nursing care. Results: Six studies were included, demonstrating a high level of patient satisfaction with triage, especially regarding nurses' skills and professional competence, courtesy, respect, interest, and empathy. However, pain management and confidence in treatment scored lower. Patient satisfaction was related to age, gender, reason for consultation, and perception of nurses' professional competence. Discussion: Similar opinions were observed regarding areas for improvement in care and nurses' skills in triage. The need for qualitative research and more rigorous sampling methods was highlighted. Conclusions: Nurse training and education in triage are crucial for patient satisfaction. Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in triage and address remaining challenges.

Abstract:Triage starts at the front door of the Emergency Department (ED), and repeatedly performed by the responsible duty nurses with the aim of facilitating a timely and appropriate treatment of patients. A triage system called the Orotta Triage System was implemented in the emergency settings of the selected hospitals in 2006, with the emergency nurses trained to triage using the system. Since the introduction, a majority of nurses have been replaced by new untrained nurses. This study was conducted to assess the impact of an educational intervention on the triage nurses knowledge and performance.

Jordanian patients' perception of stressors in critical care units: a questionnaire survey

Abstract:Background: Critical care units' CCUs environment has been regarded as a leading stressor because of the complex nature of patient's health problems that require an extensive use of very sophisticated technology. Multiple and complex care predominates in CCUs have been described by patients to be stressful and emotionally demanding. Rationale: Number of CCUs in Jordan has been increasing and so does the advanced technology, which calls for adaptability in dealing with unit stressors as they affect patient recovery and rehabilitation. Objectives: To identify the principal physical and psychological stressors as perceived by Jordanian patients in CCUs and to examine the effects of selected patients' characteristics on their perception of stressors. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data was collected from 165 patients, 2-3 days after being discharged from CCUs in two Jordanian governmental hospitals. A structured interview guide including the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressor Scale was used. Results: Having tubes in nose or mouth, being in pain, not able to sleep and hearing the buzzers and alarms from the machinery, being thirsty, and not being in control of your-self were considered by patients as the main stressors. Psychological stressors were the least stressful items identified by patients. Marital status, educational level, age, and income were the most significant characteristics which affected patients' perception of stressors. Conclusions: The findings suggest that single and older patients with low income and low education experience more difficulties than their counterparts. Nurses must utilize more effective communication techniques and interventions to relieve patients' pain, and provide an atmosphere in which rest is possible, with less light, noise, and the fewest possible interruptions. Although the results of this study indicate the need to provide the best possible physical care, it is equally important to give adequate attention to patients' and families' psychological aspects.

This study assesses the ethical awareness and practices among HCWs in emergency departments of tertiary hospitals in Saudi Arabia, aiming to identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 256 HCWs, including physicians, nurses, and administrative staff, in emergency departments across tertiary hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire evaluated participants' knowledge of healthcare ethics, their experiences with ethical dilemmas, and the sources from which they derived their ethical understanding. Results: The majority of participants exhibited a commendable level of ethical knowledge and practice, with frequent encounters of ethical or legal issues highlighting the pervasive nature of ethical challenges in emergency healthcare settings. Key sources of ethical knowledge included experiential learning and academic lectures, with a notable emphasis on practical experience. Despite the satisfactory level of ethical awareness, areas requiring further educational focus were identified, emphasizing the need for enhanced ethics training tailored to the emergency medical context. Discussion: The findings underline the critical importance of incorporating ethics into the core of healthcare education and ongoing professional development for HCWs. Establishing a culture of continuous ethical dialogue and learning is essential for fostering patient-centered care and making informed ethical decisions in the fast-paced environment of emergency services. The study advocates for revising current ethics training programs to ensure they are comprehensive, relevant, and accessible, preparing HCWs to effectively address both current and future ethical challenges. Abstract:Introduction: Despite its importance in emergency medicine, the practice of triage in low- and middle-income countries remains rudimentary, due to dearth of human and material resources, among other reasons. Subjects and methods: In the Children Emergency Room of a teaching hospital, some nonclinical staff were intermittently deployed to coordinate patient traffic and provide brief first- contact triage on arrival. For this, they were internally trained in triage. The present study was aimed at assessing the value and accuracy of first-contact triage provided by nonclinical staff in a children emergency department of a tertiary hospital. Results: Data of 45 patients seen during the period were obtained from the records of the triage officers and included their age, gender, presenting complaints and the findings of the paediatric assessment triangle. There was a statistically significant relationship between the triage ratings of the nonCC –BY 4.0 clinical staff and the qSOFA / L- qSOFA scores obtained by the emergency room doctors, the time spent in CHER and the total duration of admission (R2= 0.36 - 0.44; p = 0.003), (R2= 0.23 - 0.28; p = 0.018) and (R2= 0.33 - 0.40; p = 0.007) respectively. Conclusion: This study shows that to a high degree, the nonclinical staff correctly categorized the severity of illness in the Paediatric Emergency Department of a tertiary level hospital, thus limiting undue tertiary delay in treatment and potential harm from such delays. Hence, the study exposes a potential source of human resources for paediatric emergency triage in LMICs where there is a dearth of professional medical personnel.
