Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical value of Chinese Multi-Dimensional Health Assessment Questionnaire (MDHAQ-C) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods From December 2015 to October 2016,four hundred and twelve RA patients were recruited in this study and completed the MDHAQ-C independently and routine assessment of patient index data 3 (RAPID3) was calculated. Then correlations were assessed by Spearman correlation coefficient of RAPID3 with indices of clinical relevance and disease activity to evaluate its clinical values. Results MDHAQ-C is moderately correlated with ESR (r=0.399), CRP (r=0.381), SJC (r=0.499), TJC (r=0.558) (P<0.01), but highly correlation with VAS of pain (r=0.836), VAS of global status (r=0.915) and overall assessment of physician (r=0.784)(P<0.01), and highly correlated with a Spearman's coefficient of 0.784 for DAS 28-ESR, 0.734 for CDAI and 0.682 for SDAI (P<0.001). Conclusion MDHAQ is a reliable, valid instrument for disease activity assessment and a feasible index for clinical settings in Chinese RA patients.
Validity and reliability of the Arabic version of the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease scale in rheumatoid arthritis patients

Abstract:Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that causing disability and affection of patient’s quality of life (QoL). Self-efficacy investigation helps us to detect the requirements of chronically affected patients and evaluation of self-care management programs. The aim of our study was to test validity and reliability of Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease (SEMCD-Arabic) in RA patients. This study included 248 RA patients, carried out at Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Department. The SEMCD-Arabic Validity was assessed by correlating the SEMCD-Arabic scale with the validated Arabic version of the modified Health Assessment Questionnaire HAQ (MHAQ), the Arabic version of the Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue (MAF) scale, and the Arabic version of Short Form 36 version 2 for quality of life (SF QoL). Internal consistency, test–retest reliability was assessed. Convergent validity was confirmed by a positive correlation between (physical, mental) component of SF QoL and SEMCD-Arabic (r = 0.918, r = 0.925) respectively, and negative correlation between MAF and SEMCD-Arabic (r = − 0.657) and MHAQ with SEMCD-Arabic (r = − 0.595). Discriminant validity confirmed by a significant negative correlation between visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, disease activity scale (DAS28), Morning stiffness, patient health, physician health, age, duration, and SEMCD-Arabic (r = − 0.1–0.7) (P < 0.001). Test–retest reliability was estimated which revealed a high interclass correlation coefficient (ICC = 0.87–0.997) indicating excellent agreement and internal consistency is acceptable as the Cronbach’s alpha value (0.660 to 0.78). The SEMCD-Arabic questionnaire can be used as a valid and reliable measure for assessment of patient’s self-efficacy in RA.

Abstract:Objective: The Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Health-Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQL) is one of the most widely used questionnaires for assessing typical gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) symptoms. It is simple, concise, and treatment responsive, yet it has not been validated in the Persian language. This study aimed to translate the GERD-HRQL questionnaire into Persian and assess its validity and reliability. Design: In this cross-sectional validation study, a team of gastroenterologists, general surgeons, and professional translators conducted the forward-backward translation. A gastroenterologist interviewed 10 patients with GORD to insure understandability of the questionnaire. Fifty-four patients with GORD and 60 patients with gastrointestinal complaints other than GORD were enrolled using convenience sampling method. To assess concurrent validity, patients with GORD completed the Persian GERD-HRQL and the WHO Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaires. To assess discriminant validity, GERD-HRQL scores were compared between GORD and non-GORD patients. After 2 weeks, the patients with GORD completed the GERD-HRQL questionnaire again to assess test-retest reliability. The internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha. Results: The mean age of the GORD participants was 36.90±10.44, and the majority were women (78%). All GERD-HRQL domains and total scores exhibited significant negative correlations with WHOQOL-BREF domains (ranging from -0.28 to -0.97). The GERD-HRQL scores were significantly different in GORD and non-GORD patients (p<0.001). Test and retest scores did not show any significant differences (p=0.49). Cronbach's alpha was 0.85. Conclusion: The Persian GERD-HRQL questionnaire is valid and reliable and can effectively assess the GORD symptoms in Persian-speaking individuals.

Abstract:Objective The Disability of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire is a tool for measuring physical function and symptoms of the upper extremity. Although widely used, it is not validated for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study the DASH was validated for this patient group. Methods In total, 102 patients participated in this study. For the validation, the questionnaires of the DASH, the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36), and the Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale (AIMS2) were used. Patients were examined clinically before completing the questionnaires. Pain was scored by each patient using a visual analog scale (VAS). The DiseaseActivity Score (DAS28) was obtained and grip strength was measured. Reliability was tested by a second DASH questionnaire after 2 days. Validity was tested using a Pearson correlation analysis for the relevant domains of the questionnaires and for the clinical aspects. Results The reliability of the DASH was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.97). Internal consistency was strong (Cronbach’s alpha 0.97). Validity was proven with excellent results for Pearson correlation with the relevant domains of the questionnaires: HAQ, r = 0.88; SF-36, r = 0.70; and AIMS2, r = 0.85. The clinical scores had a relatively low correlation with the DASH (DAS28, r = 0.42; and grip strength, r = 0.41–0.48), except for the VAS (r = 0.60–0.65). Conclusion The DASH is a reliable and valid questionnaire in patients with RA. It can be used as a measurement tool of physical disability of the upper extremity.

Abstract:Ribavirin is a nucleotide analog that can be incorporated by viral polymerases, causing mutations by allowing base mismatches. It is currently used therapeutically as an antiviral drug during hepatitis C virus infections. During the amplification of poliovirus genomic RNA or hepatitis C replicons, error frequency is known to increase upon ribavirin treatment. This observation has led to the hypothesis that ribavirin's antiviral activity results from error catastrophe caused by increased mutagenesis of viral genomes. Here, we describe the generation of ribavirin-resistant poliovirus by serial viral passage in the presence of increasing concentrations of the drug. Ribavirin resistance can be caused by a single amino acid change, G64S, in the viral polymerase in an unresolved portion of the fingers domain. Compared with wild-type virus, ribavirin-resistant poliovirus displays increased fidelity of RNA synthesis in the absence of ribavirin and increased survival both in the presence of ribavirin and another mutagen, 5-azacytidine. Ribavirin-resistant poliovirus represents an unusual class of viral drug resistance: resistance to a mutagen through increased fidelity.

Abstract:Phantom and in vitro studies were performed to evaluate the potential application of digital circular tomosynthesis in imaging of the breast and upper cervical spine. A prototype volumetric x-ray system was used to image a mammographic phantom, a fresh mastectomy specimen, and a head phantom containing the upper cervical spine. Results show that breast tissue visualization is improved by the ability to produce sectional images that blur overlying structures and yield three-dimensional information about calcification clusters. In upper cervical spine imaging, digital circular tomosynthesis effectively blurs overlying jaw and skull structures so that C1 and C2 can be visualized in a standard anteroposterior view.

Abstract:Background: Regularly assessing the oral health of children and adolescents is crucial. Researchers seek valid and reliable questionnaires to obtain comparable global data, enabling oral health evaluation in large populations, remote regions, or even during an epidemic like COVID-19, while saving time and money. Objectives: The present study was conducted to translate and validate the Persian version of the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Self-assessment Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents. Methods: In 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted in Kerman, Iran. The Persian questionnaire was tested on 20 individuals to assess the fluency and clarity of the Persian translation. The questionnaire was then filled out by 40 individuals, and reliability was evaluated using the test-retest method. The final questionnaire was completed by 878 randomly selected participants aged 7 - 18 years online. To establish concurrent validity, the researchers added three questions related to the presence of toothache without dental visits, filled teeth, and teeth with endodontic treatment. Internal consistency was checked by calculating Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results: A total of 290 students aged 7 to 12 and 588 students aged 13 to 18 participated in the study. Cronbach's alpha for the entire questionnaire was 0.656 for students under 12 years old and 0.643 for those over 12 years old. The intra-cluster correlation coefficient for both age groups was between 0.81 and 0.87. Examining the concurrent validity of this questionnaire showed that the three additional questions added by the researchers have a significant relationship with the questions describing the health of teeth and gums (oral health), the number of times participants felt toothache in the last 12 months, and the problem of biting and chewing. However, they had no significant relationship with the risk factor related to nutrition. Moreover, the questionnaire is multifactorial. Conclusions: The Persian version of the WHO Oral Health Self-assessment Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents is reliable over time. If the questionnaire is repeated and the responses of people in the same population are collected, it yields similar results. It has internal consistency, but it is a multi-factor questionnaire.

Abstract:Background: Scleroderma is a complex multisystem disorder that could have effects on the quality of patients' lives. This study was conducted by determining the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the systemic sclerosis questionnaire (SySQ) that specifically assesses indications and functional limitations of scleroderma patients. Materials and methods: In the present cross-sectional study, the method included: translation and back translation. Psychometric properties of the questionnaire including its content and face validity were assessed. Internal consistency with the SySQ (Cronbach's alpha) and reproducibility was by test-retest method. The factor structure of the questionnaire was evaluated using exploratory factor analysis. The convergent validity of the SySQ was assessed using the General Health Assessment Scale (HAQ). Results: Altogether 32 SySQ items, the internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach's alpha) of the whole tool was 0.906. The content validity index was 0.98 and the content validity ratio was 0.796, there was a significant relationship between the questions and the relevant factors in the factor analysis. The correlation coefficient = 0.953 for the instrument. The correlation of SySQ dimensions with HAQ questionnaire dimensions in convergent validity showed that musculoskeletal dimensions, general condition, and cardiorespiratory of the questionnaire are correlated with all dimensions of the HAQ questionnaire. Conclusion: The Persian version of the questionnaire SySQ with competency is valid and reliable and is suitable for measuring specific changes in Persian systemic sclerosis patients.
[Reliability and validition of the Slovak modified version of the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire using the functional disability index in patients with rheumatoid arthritis]

Abstract:Background: Functional disability is one of the most important consequences of RA in the patient's daily life. The HAQ has been widely used in its self administered form for the assessment of disability. A sensitive and valid instrument is needed for a Slovak population with RA. Objective: To evaluate reliability and validity of the Slovak version of the HAQ in patients with RA and to explore relationships between HAQ score and disease activity and to provide information concerning utilization of this instrument in clinical practice. Methods: In preparing the Slovak version of the HAQ careful attention has been paid to the translation, in terms of linguistic and conceptual equivalence, in order to preserve the original purpose of the instrument. The wording of some items required adaptation to the current activities of daily living and Slovak lifestyle. The sample consisted of 160 RA-patients, out of which 135 were women and 25 were men. The inclusion criteria were the following: age from 20 to 70 years at the onset of the study, diagnosis of RA according to the ARA criteria. The exclusion criteria were the presence of another serious disease or very disabling RA (stage IV of the Steinbrocker's classification). To analyze the data t-test, correlations, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and principal component analysis (PCA) available in the SPSS/PC+ statistical package were used. Results: The Cronbach's coefficient of reliability alpha for the HAQ total scale was 0.94. The results of PCA showed that the 20 HAQ items loaded on four components for which the eigen values were greater than 1, accounting for 70% of overall interpersonal variability. Orthogonal varimax rotation of the principal components provided factor loadings reflecting the eight dimensions within the HAQ. Validity of the HAQ was examined further by means of known-groups technique. The HAQ was found to be sensitive to differentiate between the Steinbrocker's functional capacity groups, as well as between males and females. Moreover, significant correlations (p < or = 0.01) were found between the HAQ and the C-reactive protein, the ESR, the NHP-pain, the Ritchie articular index, the Steinbrocker's functional capacity (r = 0.31-0.62) and disease duration (p < or = 0.05, r = 0.17). Conclusion: The results of the current investigation provide support for reliability and construct validity of the Slovak version of the HAQ in patients with RA. The HAQ has sufficient discriminant ability. The index disability can be used as an criterion of severity of RA, as a criterion of effectiveness in therapeutical trials for patient stratification of the Slovak population with RA.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Hearing handicap, as one of the common health problems among older people, affects life activities. The Hearing Handicap Questionnaire (HHQ) is one of the scales that provide criteria for social withdrawal, participation restriction, and emotional distress. The present study aims to translate the HHQ into Persian and determine its psychometric properties. Methods: After translation into Persian, the content validity of the questionnaire was determined based on the Lawashe’s method. Then, the Persian HHQ (P-HHQ) and the Persian Hearing Handicap Inventory for Elderly-Screening version (P-HHIE-S) were completed by 110 hearing-impaired seniors (49 females) over 60 years. The concurrent validity was determined by Spearman correlation test, and the discriminant validity was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and independent t-test. The test-retest reliability was assessed in 47 subjects after two weeks by Spearman correlation test and paired t-test. Results: The P-HHQ had high face validity. The mean total score of P-HHQ was 1.89±1.05. It had a significant positive correlation with the score of P-HHIE-S (r=0.87) and pure tone average of the better ear (r=0.72). There was a significant difference between three groups of elderly with different degrees of hearing impairment (p<0.001). Cronbach’s α values were in the range of 0.94–0.97. There was a strong correlation between test and retest scores of P-HHQ (r=0.97) which indicates a high test-retest reliability. Conclusion: The P-HHQ has acceptable validity and reliability and can be used as a suitable instrument to evaluate hearing handicap of the elderly in research studies and clinical settings. Face validity and reliability test of the Danish version of the compliance questionnaire rheumatology in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract:Background: Supporting adherence to medication is an essential part of the treatment and care of patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The Compliance Questionnaire Rheumatology (CQR) measures adherence in rheumatic diseases through 19 items covering drug-taking behaviour to identify the reasons for adhering to treatment and the factors that contribute to suboptimal adherence. The objective of this study was to present the translation of the CQR into Danish and the face validity and reliability test. Methods: The CQR was translated into Danish according to international guidelines, followed by a face validity test among 10 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in 2009. The test-retest reliability of the Danish CQR was evaluated in 49 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in 2020 - 2021 using the standard error of the measurement (SEM) converted into the minimally detectable change (MDC) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Questionnaires were administered with a minimum of 10 days between assessments. Results: The participants in the reliability test had a mean age of 57.4 years (SD 16.1) and a mean disease duration of 1.13 years (range 2 months-2 years). The mean CQR score in the test and retest was 62.7 (confidence interval (CI) 58.8; 66.6) and 62.5 (CI 58.9; 66.1), respectively, with a SEM of 8.59 (7.16; 10.73) and an MDC of 16.83. A satisfactory test-retest reliability was confirmed by an ICC value of 0.79 (CI 0.68; 0.89). Conclusion: The Danish CQR has satisfactory test-retest reliability in patients newly diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and is considered a reliable tool to measure adherence in this group.

Abstract:Abstract Background To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Extended Version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ-E) into Persian (NMQ-E-P) and evaluate the psychometric properties in a general population with different occupational tasks across nine body regions. Methods This cross-sectional study was designed according to the standard guidelines and the COSMIN checklist. The NMQ-E-P was achieved through forward and backward translation methods and consensus to produce the final draft. A Persian-speaking population ( n = 571, age 38.24 ± 7.65 years, female = 46.2%) was recruited from industries and office workers with three occupational task inclusion criteria: assembly, office, and lifting. Psychometric properties included validity for face (from confirmed clarity, simplicity, and readability), content (via the content validity index); and construct (through known group validity); additionally, the properties of internal consistency (Cronbach’s α); and test-retest reliability (Kappa coefficient of agreement) were considered. Results No significant issues during the translation process were found. The NMQ-E-P showed adequate internal consistency for all regions (α ≥ 0.87). The test-retest reliability was examined with Kappa agreement correlation coefficient and all items, except ankle regions, showed very good agreements (Kappa coefficient = 0.87-1.0). Excellent ICC values were obtained for quantitative variables (ICC > 0.88) and good construct validity was revealed ( p < 0.001). Conclusion The Persian version of the NMQ-E has very good validity and reliability and can be used by researchers and professionals to evaluate the prevalence of MSDs in nine body regions simultaneously.

Validation of the Arabic version of the diabetes self-management questionnaire in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: The number of instruments available for measuring diabetes self-management activities in Arabic countries has been limited to date. To our knowledge, no multidimensional instrument suitable for measuring diabetes self-management is currently available in Arabic. This study assessed the validation of the Arabic version of the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (A-DSMQ) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from May to August 2022 at primary healthcare centers within the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. Four steps were followed during the translation and adaptation of the DSMQ: forward translation, consulting an expert panel, backward translation, and pilot testing on the target population. The data were collected using a convenience sample of 154 patients with T2DM. Cronbach's α coefficient, criterion validity, and known-group validity were determined. Results: Cronbach's α coefficient for internal consistency was 0.76. The A-DMSQ "sum scale" scores were negatively correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (Pearson's r = - 0.48, p < 0.01) and body mass indices (r = - 0.29, p < 0.01) and positively correlated with Self-Rated Health Scale scores (r = 0.41, p < 0.01). Mean A-DSMQ "sum scale" scores differed significantly among groups with adequate, partially adequate, and inadequate glycemic control (F = 23.193, p < 0.001). Conclusions: These results indicate that the A-DSMQ is a reliable and valid tool for measuring diabetes self-management in patients with T2DM. The A-DSMQ can be used by researchers and healthcare providers interested in assessing diabetes self-management in this population. Healthcare providers should remain alert for suboptimal diabetes self-management, which may lead to significant economic costs in emergency and healthcare utilization.

Abstract:Background: Office-workers who suffer from musculoskeletal pain/disability may experience reduced productivity and absenteeism from work. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) is a valid, simple screening tool for the history and presence of self-perceived musculoskeletal symptoms in both general public and occupational settings. Objective: To translate and culturally adapt the NMQ into Arabic language and examine its psychometric properties. Methods: The published guidelines were followed to translate and adapt the NMQ into Arabic using a forward-backward process. Construct validity involved comparing NMQ responses with disability-related musculoskeletal questionnaires in different body regions, including the Neck Disability Index (NDI), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Quick-Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (Quick-DASH), and Reduced Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (ArWOMAC). The reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency and prevalence-adjusted bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK) for test-retest reliability. Results: The Arabic NMQ (Ar-NMQ) revealed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.85). For the test-retest reliability, the PABAK coefficient ranged between 0.50 and 1. The Ar-NMQ demonstrated strong construct validity. Participants reporting neck pain showed significantly elevated disability scores on the NDI (p < 0.05), while those with back pain exhibited higher ODI scores (p < 0.05). Moreover, individuals reporting shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain and disability displayed elevated Quick-DASH scores (p < 0.05). Similarly, participants reporting hip/thighs, knees, and ankle/feet pain/disability demonstrated significantly higher disability in ArWOMAC (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The NMQ was successfully translated and adapted into Arabic language, providing a reliable and valid instrument for assessing pain in specific body regions in the Arabic-speaking population.
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Chinese version of the Health Assessment Questionnaire for the Spondyloarthropathies (HAQ-S)

Abstract:The Health Assessment Questionnaire for Spondyloarthropathies (HAQ-S) is a commonly used questionnaire to evaluate function and health status of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The objective of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the HAQ-S into Chinese and then to evaluate its reliability and validity. The Chinese version of the HAQ-S was obtained with a five-step procedure of translation and cross-cultural adaptation. All invited patients met the New York criteria for AS, and a total of 103 patients finally participated in this study. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate the test-retest and inter-rater reliability of the HAQ-S. Internal consistency of the questionnaire was evaluated by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was calculated to assess the construct validity between the HAQ-S and Bath AS Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath AS Functional Index (BASFI), Bath AS Metrology Index (BASMI), and the laboratory parameters (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, ESR; C-reactive protein, CRP). Test-retest and inter-rater reliability were excellent with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.987 (p < 0.05) and 0.982 (p < 0.05), respectively. The overall internal consistency of the HAQ-S was found satisfactory (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.914). The Chinese version of the HAQ-S correlated good with the BASFI (r = 0.749, p < 0.01), and moderate with the BASDAI (r = 0.581, p < 0.01) and the BASMI (r = 0.425, p < 0.01). But, the adapted questionnaire correlated poorly with ESR (r = 0.298, p < 0.01) or CRP (r = 0.283, p < 0.01). The Chinese version of the HAQ-S is reliable and valid for the evaluation of Chinese-speaking patients with AS.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: measuring quality of life requires an instrument validated in the population language. The purpose of our study was to translate and analyze the psychometric properties of the literary Arabic version of the "diabetes health profile (DHP)-18".METHODS: we conducted a methodological study for psychometric evaluation and validation of the DHP-18, following the steps of the cross-cultural validation described by Vallerand. A convenience sample of people with diabetes was collected for this purpose. The developed questionnaire included participants' demographic characteristics, diabetes data and the experimental version of the DHP-18 questionnaire. Validity, reliability and questionnaire standards establishment were carried out.RESULTS: a sample of 333 diabetics was recruited. Test-retest correlation coefficient (r = 0.985; p<0.01) and Cronbach's alpha coefficient (alpha = 0.840) showed that the experimental version was accurate in terms of temporal stability and internal consistency. The content validity index was 0.84 and showed that the questionnaire statements accurately measured the concepts under study. The exploratory principal axis factoring, using the orthogonal varimax rotation, allowed the extraction of a factorial solution with four independent factors, grouping the 18 items of the questionnaire. Correlation coefficients between the three corresponding dimensions of the theoretical model of the questionnaire were low and positive, between 0.431 and 0.535, confirming that each dimension measured a unique content.CONCLUSION: the literary Arabic version of the DHP-18 has proven to be valid, reliable and ready for use in clinical practice in Tunisian people with diabetes.
Psychometric properties and cross-language equivalence of the revised Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue and the Rheumatoid Arthritis Impact of Disease scales in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract:Objective: To assess psychometric properties and cross-language measurement equivalence of six versions of the Bristol Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue Scale (BRAF-MDQ) and the Rheumatoid Arthritis Impact of Disease Score (RAID in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: Both questionnaires were completed by French (n = 206), German (n = 206), Dutch (n = 317), Spanish (n = 157), Swedish (n = 170) and UK (n = 210) RA patients. The presence of cross-language differential item functioning (DIF) was examined using the generalized partial credit model. The impact of DIF on the item and total scores was examined by comparing DIF unadjusted and DIF adjusted expected item and scale scores. IRT-based methods were used to assess psychometric properties of the instruments. Results: 11 of the 20 BRAF-MDQ (55%) and 4 of the 7 RAID items (57%) exhibited significant DIF in at least one of the six countries. The mean number of items with DIF per country was 2.6 for BRAF-MDQ and 1.1 for RAID. However, the impact of DIF on the total RAID and BRAF-MDQ scores, as well as the BRAF subscales, was found to be negligible at the group level. Only for the BRAF physical subscale was there evidence of minor DIF. Marginal reliabilities of BRAF-MDQ (0.93) and RAID (0.89) were excellent, and precise scores could be obtained across the spectrum of disease impact and fatigue scores measured by these PROMs. Conclusion: This study supports the cross-language measurement equivalence of BRAF-MDQ and RAID and provides further support for the psychometric properties of these measures in RA.
Tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia and inflammation in pTa and pT1 papillary urothelial carcinoma of the bladder.

Abstract:The presence of lamina propria invasion is a prominent prognostic factor in papillary urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. Pathologic assessment of lamina propria invasion is frequently difficult due to the inevitable tangential sectioning and other factors, such as thermal and/or mechanical artifacts or pronounced stromal inflammation that may obscure invasion.1 Recent studies performed on cervical, vulvar and laryngeal carcinoma2-4 suggest that an elevated stromal eosinophil count may serve as a morphologic feature associated with tumor invasion. We performed a study to test the hypothesis that a high stromal eosinophil count and intense stromal inflammation are indicative of lamina propria invasion in papillary urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. Our aim was also to estimate the number of eosinophils per 1 high power field (HPF) and per 10 HPFs that could serve as thresholds in the diagnosis of invasion. The computer database at the Ljudevit Jurak Department of Pathology was used to generate a list of 50 consecutive patients with pTa and pT1 papillary urothelial carcinoma of the bladder each treated with transurethral resection, starting on January 1, 2005. The age of patients ranged from 35 to 87 years (median, 67.4), and the male:female ratio was 4.5:1. There was no statistically significant difference in the age (Mann-Whitney U-test, p> 0.05) or sex distribution (c2 test, p>0.05) between the pTa and pT1 groups. Thirty-one (62%) pT1 and 4 (8%) pTa tumors were high grade. Eosinophils were counted in lamina propria in an HPF (400•) with the maximal number of eosinophils and in 9 adjacent HPFs (Table I). The average number of inflammatory cells in 1 HPF was calculated from 10 randomly selected HPFs in lamina propria and graded as 0: 200 inflammatory cells/HPF.
