Abstract:Unintentional ingestion of metal-contaminated soils may pose a great threat to human health. To accurately evaluate the health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils, their bioaccessibility has been widely determined by in vitro assays and increasingly employed to optimize the assessment parameters. Given that, using meta-analysis, we analyzed the literature on farmland heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in Chinese main grain production regions, and collected their total and bioaccessibility data to accurately assess their human health risks. Monte Carlo simulation was used to reduce the uncertainty in metal concentration, intake rate, toxicity coefficient, and body weight. We found that the mean concentration (0.47 mg/kg) and geological accumulation index (I geo , 0–5.24) of Cd were the priority position of controlling metals. Moreover, children are more vulnerable to carcinogenic risks than adults. Soil mineralogy, physicochemical properties, Fe, and the types of in vitro assays are the influencing factors of bioaccessibility discrepancy. Furthermore, appropriate bioaccessibility determination methods can be adapted according to the differences in ecological receptors for the risk assessment, like developing a "personalized assessment" scheme for polluted farmland soil management. Collectively, bioaccessibility-based models may provide an accurate and effective approach to human health risk assessment.

Abstract:To accurately assess the bioavailability risk of heavy metals (HMs) in a representative polymetallic mining region, we undertook an exhaustive analysis of Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Cd, Zn, Mn, and Cr in soils from diverse land-use types, encompassing agricultural, forest, residential, and mining areas. We employed speciation analysis methods and a modified risk assessment approach to ascertain potential ecological threats posed by the HMs. Our findings reveal that both the total potential ecological risk and the modified bioavailability risks are most pronounced in the soil of the mining area. The modified bioavailability threats are primarily caused by Pb, Ni, Cd, and Co. Although the total potential ecological risk of Cu is high in the local soil, the predominance of its stable forms reduces its mobility, thereby mitigating its detrimental impact on the ecosystem. Additionally, medium modified bioavailability risks were identified in the peripheries of agricultural and forest areas, potentially attributable to geological processes and agricultural activities. Within the urban district, medium risks were observed in residential and mining areas, likely resulting from mining, metallurgy, industrial operations, and traffic-related activities. This study provides critical insights that can assist governmental authorities in devising targeted policies to alleviate health hazards associated with soils in polymetallic mining regions.

Abstract:Mining and smelting have been releasing huge amount of toxic substances into the environment. In the present study, agricultural soil and different agricultural products (potato, Chinese cabbage, garlic bolt, corn) were analyzed to examine the source, spatial distribution, and risk of 12 elements (As, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in agricultural soil near mine fields, smelting fields, and mountain field around Hezhang County, west of Guizhou Province, China. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that in mining area, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn were generated from anthropogenic sources; in smelting area, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn were derived from anthropogenic sources through zinc smelting ceased in 2004. The enrichment factors (EFs) and ecological risk index (RI) of soil in mining area are the most harmful, showing extremely high enrichment and very high ecological risk of As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn. Zinc is the most significant enriched in the smelting area; however, mountain area has a moderate enrichment and ecological risk and do not present any ecological risk. According to spatial distribution, the concentrations depend on the nearby mining and smelting activities. Transfer factors (TFs) in the smelting area and mountain are high, implying a threat for human consumption. Therefore, further studies should be carried out taking into account the harm of those heavy metals and potential negative health effects from the consumption of agricultural products in these circumstances.

Abstract:Despite recent studies have investigated the strong influences of smelting activities on heavy metal contamination in the soil environment, little studies have been conducted on the current information about the potential environmental risks posed by toxic heavy metals in smelting contaminated sites. In the present study, a combination of the bioavailability, speciation, and release kinetics of toxic heavy metals in the indigenous zinc smelting contaminated soil were reliably used as an effective tool to support site risk assessment. The bioavailability results revealed that the bioavailable metal concentrations were intrinsically dependent on the types of chemical extractants. Interestingly, 0.02 mol/L EDTA + 0.5 mol/L CH3COONH4 was found to be the best extractant, which extracted 30.21% of Cu, 31.54% of Mn, 2.39% of Ni and 28.89% of Zn, respectively. The sequential extraction results suggested that Cd, Pb, and Zn were the most mobile elements, which would pose the potential risks to the environment. The correlation of metal bioavailability with their fractionation implied that the exchangeable metal fractions were easily extracted by CaCl2 and Mehlich 1, while the carbonate and organic bound metal fractions could be extracted by EDTA and DTPA with stronger chelating ability. Moreover, the kinetic modeling results suggested that the chemical desorption mechanism might be the major factor controlling heavy metal release. These results could provide some valuable references for the risk assessment and management of heavy metals in the smelting contaminated sites.

Abstract:Large amounts of heavy metal are released by mining and industrial activities to the surrounding environment, raising great concerns regarding the effects of environmental exposure to pollutants on human health. A combination of total and bioaccessible contents, spatial analysis, cluster analysis, and positive matrix factorization model was successfully used to determine the status and sources of heavy metals in a small farmland under long-term influences of mining and industries activities in this study. The results show that the average contents of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in agricultural soils exceed the Chinese national standard 2.18, 5.95, 3.46, and 1.33 times, respectively. Cd poses the highest potential on human health with a mean geo-accumulation index (I-geo) of 4.51 and a bioaccessible ratio of 37.41%, followed by Pb, which has a mean I-geo of 1.58 and a bioaccessible ratio of 63.24%. The significant correlation (P<0.01) was found between the total and bioaccessible four contaminated metal contents (As, Cd, Pb, and Zn), indicating that total concentration of heavy metals could be effective indicators on bioaccessibility in this study. The As was attributed to the atmospheric deposition, Cd and Zn were mainly derived from mining activities, and Pb contamination is highly related with cement plant. Compared to atmospheric deposition, industrial activities, and soil parent materials, mining activities has the greatest influence on the enrichments of the total heavy metals in agricultural soils with the proportion of 47.9%.
Lability, bioaccessibility, and ecological and health risks of anthropogenic toxic heavy metals in the arid calcareous soil around a nonferrous metal smelting area

Abstract:Lability and bioaccessibility of anthropogenic toxic heavy metals in arid calcareous soils are critical to understand their ecological and health risks. This study examined toxic heavy metal speciation in the calcareous soil contaminated by nonferrous metal smelting. Results demonstrated that approximately 70 years’ nonferrous metal smelting and mining in Baiyin led to significant contamination of nearby soil down to about 200 cm depth by cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), with more serious contamination in the downwind areas of smelting or mining. More than half of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the soil was present in the labile fractions while more than 75% of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and vanadium (V) was present in the residual fraction. Carbonate minerals in this calcareous soil play an important role in the labile fractions, with approximate 25% of Cd and Pb and 15% of Cu and Zn bound in carbonates. Bioaccessible Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the soil were approximately 49.8%, 29.4%, 12.2%, and 33.8% in gastric phase and 13.5%, 15.9%, 4.3%, and 9.1% in intestinal phase of their total concentrations, respectively. Therefore, Cd and Zn were removed from gastric solution to a greater extent than Cu and Pb by neutral intestine environment. However, bioaccessible Co, Cr, Ni, and V in the soil were less than 3% of their total concentrations. Bioaccessibility of these metals but Cu in this calcareous soil was significantly lower than that for the acidic Ultisols and Alfisols in U.S. The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Ni in each chemical and bioaccessible forms were significantly correlated linearly with their total concentrations in the calcareous soil, while only residual concentration was significantly correlated with the total concentration for Co, Cr, and V. These linear slopes showed that relative lability and bioaccessibility increased for Cd, but decreased for Cu, Pb, and Zn with the increase in their total concentrations in the calcareous soil. Direct oral soil ingestion would not pose a non-carcinogenic health risk to local children. However, very high potential ecological risk would be caused by these metals in the soil. These results provide improved insights into the biogeochemical processes of anthropogenic toxic heavy metals in the arid calcareous soils worldwide.

Abstract:A systematic protocol for conducting area-specific health risk assessments associated with soil heavy metal(loid)s contamination, incorporating total and bioaccessible metal(loid)s, is outlined in this study. We evaluated total and bioaccessible heavy metal(loid)s levels, along with the associated community health risks, in urban soils around two industrial areas, LH01–LH10 and QX01–QX11, in Nanjing, Southeast China. Our findings unveiled substantial disparities in metal(loid)s concentrations, pollution sources, and population health risks across these sampled areas. Soils from LH03, LH05, LH09, QX09, and QX10 exhibited unacceptable carcinogenic ( CR ) and non-carcinogenic risks ( HI ) based on total metal(loid)s concentrations. However, most heavy metal(loid)s were proved non-bioaccessible through oral ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact, challenging the over-conservative use of total concentrations in risk assessment. Considering bioaccessible metal(loid)s, CR values decreased from 0.181 × 10 –4 –1.371 × 10 –4 to 0.023 × 10 –4 –0.080 × 10 –4 , and HI decreased from 0.163–3.400 to 0.069–1.328 for children. Spatial interpolation underscored variability in health risks, shaped by geographical and climatic conditions, soil properties, and toxic metal(loid)s concentrations, prompting our proposal for a more comprehensive area-specific health risk assessment protocol that integrates bioaccessible metal(loid)s considerations. These findings encapsulated a comprehensive and feasible risk assessment procedure, and provided valuable insights for refining approaches, remediating contaminated soils, and optimizing local and regional environmental policies.

Abstract:Abandoned non-ferrous metal mining and smelting sites have left a degraded environmental legacy, threatening the ecosystem and human health, particularly by the presence of As, Cd, Pb, and Cu as major contaminants. The health of the metal-contaminated soils was assessed by combining physicochemical parameters and microbial metabolism activity analyses. Low microbial metabolic activity indicated that soil microorganisms were inhibited by the presence of heavy metals. The content and speciation distribution of metals were closely linked to the measured microbial metabolic indicators. The invertase (INV) activity and peak time (Tpeak) were identified as sensitive bio-indicators for assessing soil health conditions. Combination environmental assessment (CEA) pollution, considering the total content and chemical form of metal(loid)s, revealed Cd, As, Pb, and Cu all reached high pollution degrees at the surrounding area, while Cr, Mn, Sb, Zn, Ni, and V were low pollution degrees. Different research sites ranked by potential ecological risk index (RI) as follows Pollution site (24621.22) > East site (19330.32) > West site (12989.49) > South site (9281.05), while different sites were sorted in reverse order by microbial indicators. The analyses revealed that the main human health risk was linked to As, threatening the local population with non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic hazards, particularly for children.

Abstract:Metal(loid) contamination of food crops and soils resulting from mining activities has been a major concern due to the potential risk to humans. In this study, a total of 36 rice (home-grown and market rice), 38 vegetable, 10 drinking water, 4 river water, 18 soils and 30 urine samples were collected from an abandoned mining area or the local residents in China. Results showed that metal(loid) levels in some of the soil and drinking water samples exceeded the Chinese standard. Rice Cd concentration, rice Pb levels, and vegetable Pb levels exceeded the maximum permissible concentrations in 49%, 68%, and 42% of the samples, respectively. In gastric phases, the average Cd, Pb and As bioaccessibilities in rice were 72%, 70%, and 82%. In gastrointestinal phases, the average Cd, Pb and As bioaccessibilities in rice were 49%, 39%, and 94%. Vegetables (pak choi was selected) showed lower metal(loid) bioaccessibility than rice. The median concentrations of Cd, Pb and As in urine were 3.99, 4.82 and 64.8 mu g L-1, respectivley. Rice had the highest contribution rates of Cd and Pb for daily intake, accounting for 114% and 210%, respectively. Vegetables contributed less, and very little contribution came from drinking water. Based on the bioaccessibility data, metal(loid) contamination around the mining area poses a great exposure risk to the local residents through consumption of food crops.
Status assessment and probabilistic health risk modeling of metals accumulation in agriculture soils across China: A synthesis

Abstract:Heavy metal accumulation in agriculture soils is of particular concern in China, while the status and probabilistic health risks of metal contamination in Chinese agriculture soils have been rarely studied at the national scale. In this study, we compiled a database of heavy metal concentrations in Chinese agriculture soils and selected six heavy metals for pollution assessment and risk screening: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and Zinc (Zn). Monte Carlo simulation was employed to assess the probabilistic health risks, the associated uncertainties, as well as variations in toxicity parameters, ingestion rate and body weight. Results indicated that the concentrations of Cd were elevated above their reference standard and Cd had the highest mean geo-accumulation index (Igeo) of 1.79. Moreover, the mean hazard index (HI) through exposure to six heavy metals was 1.85E−01 and 2.87E−02 for children and adults, respectively, with 2.2% of non-cancer risks for children that exceeded the guideline value of 1. In contrast, 95.0% and 90.0% of the total cancer risks (TCR) through exposure to six heavy metals for children and adults, respectively, exceeded the guideline value of 1E−06. Six metals were ranked based on their percent of risk outputs exceeding the guideline values. Arsenic had the high exceedance of both cancer and non-cancer risks, while both Cr and Cd were metals with high concern that had high exceedance of cancer risk. Sensitivity analyses indicated that metal concentrations and ingestion rate of soil were the predominant contributors to total risk variance. Overall, the adverse health risks induced by exposure to heavy metals contaminated farmland were elevated. Results from this study may provide valuable implications for public health professionals and policy-makers to design effective strategy to manage nation-wide farmland and reduce heavy metal exposure.<h5>Graphical abstract</h5>

Abstract:Acidic red soil is a typical agrotype in southern China, how heavy metal contamination introduced by mineral industry activities, i.e. mining, smelter, and tailings may impact metal soil speciation and bioavailability in acidic red soil farmlands is not well investigated yet. In this study, soil metal concentrations, speciation, corn grain accumulation, and environmental factors affecting corn metal accumulation were analyzed. All the study sites are moderately to heavily contaminated and the contamination level decreases in the order of Cd > Pb > As > Hg > Cr. Lands near smelters have higher mobile species, extractable, exchangeable, and carbonate-bound portions account for more than 20% of the total Pb and Cd soil concentration, indicating that the two elements can be readily accumulated by plants. The hazard quotient index indicates As in soil may pose a potential non-carcinogenic health risk, while the potential risk of cancer occurrence may be induced by Cd and As through soil ingestion and dermal contact. 85% and 42% of the corn samples from the study sites exceeded the national food safety standard for Pb and Cd, respectively. The dietary intake of Cd in corn may pose a potential carcinogenic risk. The correlation analysis between the Pb and Cd accumulation in corn and the soil properties indicated that improved soil OM content may reduce the accumulation of Cd, while DTPA-extractable Pb can be used to predict the potential bioavailable Pb in soil. This work can support pollution control and aid the health risk management of mineral industry red acidic soil areas.

Abstract:Background: Mining activities always emit metal(loid)s into the surrounding environment, where their accumulation in the soil may pose risks and hazards to humans and ecosystems. Objective: This paper aims to determine of the type, source, chemical form, fate and transport, and accurate risk assessment of 17 metal(loid) contaminants including As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ag, B, Bi, Co, Mo, Sb, Ti, V, W and Sn in the soils collected from an abandoned tungsten mining area, and to guide the implementing of appropriate remediation strategies. Methods: Contamination factors (CFs) and integrated pollution indexes (IPIs) and enrichment factors (EFs) were used to assess their ecological risk and the sources were identified by using multivariate statistics analysis, spatial distribution investigation and correlation matrix. Results: The IPI and EF values indicated the soils in the mine site and the closest downstream one were extremely disturbed by metal(loid)s such as As, Bi, W, B, Cu, Pb and Sn, which were emitted from the mining wastes and acid drainages and delivered by the runoff and human activities. Arsenic contamination was detected in nine sites with the highest CF values at 24.70 next to the mining site. The Cd contamination scattered in the paddy soils around the resident areas with higher fraction of bioavailable forms, primarily associated with intense application of phosphorus fertilizer. The lithogenic elements V, Ti, Ag, Ni, Sb, Mo exhibit low contamination in all sampling points and their distribution were depended on the soil texture and pedogenesis process. Conclusions: The long term historical mining activities have caused severe As contamination and higher enrichment of the other elements of orebody in the local soils. The appropriate remediation treatment approach should be proposed to reduce the bioavailability of Cd in the paddy soils and to immobilize As to reclaim the soils around the mining site. Furthermore, alternative fertilizing way and irrigating water sources are urgencies to reduce the input of Cd and As into the local soils effectively.

Abstract:Previous studies on the impact of the mining of metal-bearing minerals on surrounding soil mainly focused on single or a few areas. However, these studies' results cannot provide effective making-support for soil pollution control in large-scale areas, especially in cross-provincial scale. This study first collected 78 literature before 2020 on soil heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) affected by the mining of metal-bearing minerals in Southwest China. Then, the geo-accumulation index, ecological risk, and health risk were assessed based on the extracted heavy metal data. Results showed that As, Cd, Hg, and Pb should be selected as the preferentially controlled heavy metals; Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces should be selected as the preferentially concerned areas; children should be given priority attention. The results provided more effective decision support for reducing heavy metal pollution in the areas affected by the mining of metal-bearing minerals in Southwest China.

Abstract:Heavy metal(loid) (HM) contamination in agricultural soils, particularly in areas severely impacted by smelting industries, has attracted worldwide attention. In this study, agricultural soils were collected in a flourishing multimetal smelting area near the Yellow River in central China. By an integrated approach encompassing the positive matrix factorization model, ordinary kriging interpolation and hierarchical clustering analysis (PMF-OK-HC), a total of four major sources and their mass contributions were identified, namely, soil parent material (56.6%), industrial waste and Mo smelting (24.0%), metal smelting and traffic emissions (12.8%), and coal combustion (6.7%). On this basis, the health risk of HMs was evaluated by Monte Carlo simulations and showed that a higher risk, with a higher proportion of exceeding-thresholds risk, was observed for children than for adults in terms of both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Exposure pathways of oral ingestion in children could result in a higher attributed risk than other pathways. Furthermore, source-oriented risk assessment (SORA) revealed that the sources of coal combustion, industrial waste and Mo smelting had the highest contributions to noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. Abstract:Ingestion of metal-contaminated soils poses risks to human health. To accurately assess the risks, in vitro assays have been developed to measure metal bioaccessibility. However, they often differ considerably in gastrointestinal fluid components and assay parameters, leading to inconsistent bioaccessibility results. As such, in vitro assays need to be validated against in vivo bioassays based on in vivo-in vitro correlations (IVIVCs). To help researchers to select the best in vitro assay and increase the robustness of the IVIVCs, there is a need to review and compile existing data. In this review, we focus on three metals (As, Pb, and Cd), five common in vitro assays (SBRC, UBM, IVG, DIN, and PBET), and two in vivo bioassays (mouse and swine models). Specifically, we 1) discuss variations in metal bioaccessibility measurements among different in vitro assays, 2) identify the roles of major gastrointestinal fluid constitutes and assay parameters in affecting metal bioaccessibility, 3) summarize weaknesses associated with existing IVIVCs, and 4) establish new IVIVCs using pooled soil samples from different studies. In addition, future research directions are highlighted, including better understanding of the roles of gastrointestinal fluid components, improving in vitro assays to better correlate with in vivo bioassays, expanding bioaccessibility measurements using different in vitro assays, validation of IVIVCs using independent soils, assessing the reliability of in vitro assays in remediated soils, and addressing the mechanisms behind IVIVCs.

Abstract:In recent years, heavy metal pollution accidents have occurred in many regions of China, and the public has become increasingly concerned about its health. Based on a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency model and using Monte Carlo simulation techniques, this article presents a procedure for health risk assessment of heavy metal pollution. A case study was conducted in the Qixia lead and zinc mining area. Based on the magnitude of heavy metal contamination in the mine factory, vicinal Qixia scenic site and village, the potential health risk calculated for a lifetime of exposure (through ingestion and dermal contact) was determined as the cumulative carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk for workers, tourists, and local residents (including children and adults), respectively. The risk assessment indicated that the carcinogenic risk is not significant. However, Pb poses a significant cumulative non-carcinogenic risk, which tends to be serious for workers. Additionally, local children are more vulnerable than adults to the risks associated with heavy metal contamination. Accordingly, risk alleviation and preventive measures should be taken, especially for children and workers.

Abstract:Metal contamination in mining areas, where mining and farming coexist, is of great concern worldwide. Nevertheless, a disconnection exists between those risks to environmental and human health. In this study, an integrated approach was used to connect the environmental and human health risks from metal exposures nearby a Pb-Zn-Ag mine. The field survey showed metal contamination in soils and crop plants as well as variation in soil microbial community in mining region relative to the reference site. Together with non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessment with a probabilistic approach, Cd and Cr were identified as the priority contaminants. Further, consumption of contaminated food crops was a significant pathway of human exposure. Especially, children were susceptible to metal contamination with non-carcinogenic hazard index (0.45 for soil ingestion and 1.19 for dietary intake) and carcinogenic risk index (3.47 x 10(4) for soil ingestion and 5.10 x 10(3) for dietary intake) at the 50th percentile. These findings facilitate the priority actions on mitigation strategies to minimize the environmental and health risks. Also, the potential environmental and human health consequences due to uncontrolled mining in this region serve as a case study for other regions involved in mining activities. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Comprehensive evaluation of metal(loid)s pollution risk and microbial activity characteristics in non-ferrous metal smelting contaminated site

Abstract:Large amounts of metal(loid)s in abandoned non-ferrous metal smelting site are released to the surrounding environment, causing serious harm to the environment. A weighted comprehensive pollution risk score (CRS), combining two typical metal(loid)s pollution and risk index evaluation methods (speciation and total content indices), and two microbial activity evaluation methods (microcalorimetry and enzyme activities), is proposed to evaluate the pollution degree and environmental risk of metal(loid)s. In the surface soil (Site SS) of contaminated site, the CRS identified seven metal(loid)s (CRS As (20) > CRS Cd (19) > CRS Sb (18) > CRS Zn (13) = CRS Cu (13) > CRS Ni (10) > CRS Pb (8)) with higher risks, and six (CRS Cr (7) > CRS Mn (4) = CRS V (4) > CRS Al (3) = CRS Mg (3) > CRS Ti (2)) with lower risks. Different areas were sorted by the potential ecological risk index (RI) and CRS index from large to small: the deep soil (Site SD) > Site SS > the surrounding wasteland (Site Y), indicating that smelting site was heavily polluted by metal(loid)s. In Site SS, microbial activities were low confirming the inhibition effect of metal(loid)s on soil microbial community activities. Microbial activity characteristics were correlated to metal(loid)s concentration and mobility, indicating that microbial activity represents a potential indicator of pollution. Particularly, FDA activity and TMA are sensitive indicators to estimate soil metal(loid)s pollution level. Our study provides a comprehensive assessment of the metal(loid)s pollution risk, including microbial activity, in non-ferrous metal smelting sites, useful information for the management and remediation of metal(loid)s polluted sites.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the mining industry, the pollution of heavy metal(loid)s in soils near copper (Cu) mining sites is a significant concern worldwide. However, the pollution status and probabilistic health risks of heavy metal(loid)s of soils associated with Cu mines, have rarely been studied on a global scale. In this study, eight heavy metal(loid) concentrations in soil samples taken near 102 Cu mining sites worldwide were obtained through a literature review. Based on this database, the heavy metal(loid) pollution and ecological risk in soils near Cu mines were evaluated. Most of the study sites exceeded the moderately to heavily polluted levels of Cu and Cd; compared to other regions, higher pollution levels were observed at sites in Oman, China, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Soil pollution by Cd, Pb, and Zn at agricultural sites was higher than that in non-agricultural sites. In addition, these heavy metal(loid)s produced a high ecological risk to soils around Cu mining sites in which the contribution of Cd, Cu, and As reached up to 46.5%, 21.7%, and 18.4%, respectively. The mean hazard indices of the eight heavy metal(loid)s were 0.209 and 0.979 for adults and children, respectively. The Monte Carlo simulation further predicted that 1.40% and 29.9% of non-carcinogenic risk values for adults and children, respectively, exceeded the safe level of 1.0. Moreover, 84.5% and 91.0% of the total cancer risk values for adults and children, respectively, exceeded the threshold of 1E-04. Arsenic was the main contributor to non-carcinogenic risk, while Cu had the highest exceedance of carcinogenic risk. Our findings indicate that the control of Cu, Cd, and As should be prioritized because of their high incidence and significant risks in soils near Cu mines. These results provide valuable inputs for policymakers in designing effective strategies for reducing the exposure of heavy metal(loid)s in this area worldwide.

Abstract:Soil-heavy metal pollution in mining areas is one of the problems in the comprehensive treatment of soil environmental pollution. To explore the degree of soil-heavy metal pollution and the human health risk in mining areas, the contents of soil As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Cr(VI) in an abandoned gold mining area were determined. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo), single-factor pollution index (SPI), Nemerow comprehensive pollution index (NCPI), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and the human health risk assessment model were used to assess the pollution degree and the risk of soil-heavy metal pollution. Finally, the assessment results were used to provide remediation guidance. The results showed that (1) the average contents of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni in the mining area exceeded the background values of the soil elements. (2) The mining area was polluted by heavy metals to different degrees and had strong potential ecological hazards. (3) The total carcinogenic risk of heavy metals exceeded the health risk standard. The main components of pollution in the mining area were As, Cd, Cr, and Hg. Results from this study are expected to play a positive role in pollution treatment and the balance between humans and ecology.
