Abstract:Renewable energy systems, particularly in countries with limited fossil fuel resources, are promising and environmentally sustainable sources of electricity generation. Wind, solar Photovoltaic (PV), and biomass gasifier-based systems have gotten much attention recently for providing electricity to energy-deficient areas. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, a completely renewable system is unreliable and may cause operation problems. Energy storage systems and volatile generation sources are the best way to combat the problem. This paper proposes a hybrid grid-connected wind-solar PV generation Microgrid (MG) with biomass and energy storage devices to meet the entire value of load demand for the adopted buildings in an intended region and ensure economic dispatch as well as make a trade in the electricity field by supplying/receiving energy to/from the utility grid. The control operation plan uses battery storage units to compensate energy gap if the priority resources (wind turbine and solar PV) are incapable of meeting demand. Additionally, the biomass gasifier is used as a fallback option if the batteries fail to perform their duty. At any time, any excess of energy can be utilized to charge the batteries and sell the rest to the utility. Additionally, if the adopted resources are insufficient to meet the demand, the required energy is acquired from the utility. A Hybrid Grey Wolf with Cuckoo Search Optimization (GWCSO) algorithm is adopted for achieving optimal sizing of the proposed grid-connected MG. To assess the proposed technique's robustness, the results are compared to those obtained using the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm. The GWCSO method yielded a lower total number of component units, annual cost, total Net Present Cost (NPC), and Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) than the GWO algorithm, whereas the GWCSO algorithm has the lowest deviation, indicating that it is more accurate and robust than the GWO algorithm.

Abstract:Recently, global interest in organizing the functioning of renewable energy resources (RES) through microgrids (MG) has developed, as a unique approach to tackle technical, economic, and environmental difficulties. This study proposes implementing a developed Distributable Resource Management strategy (DRMS) in hybrid Microgrid systems to reduce total net percent cost ( TNPC ), energy loss ( P loss ), and gas emissions ( GEM ) while taking the cost-benefit index ( CBI ) and loss of power supply probability ( LPSP ) as operational constraints. Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) was utilized to find the optimal size of the hybrid Microgrid components and calculate the multi-objective function with and without the proposed management method. In addition, a detailed sensitivity analysis of numerous economic and technological parameters was performed to assess system performance. The proposed strategy reduced the system's total net present cost, power loss, and emissions by (1.06%), (8.69%), and (17.19%), respectively compared to normal operation. Firefly Algorithm (FA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques were used to verify the results. This study gives a more detailed plan for evaluating the effectiveness of hybrid Microgrid systems from a technical, economic, and environmental perspective.

Abstract:Density of renewable energy sources in distribution systems has developed a novel structure, called microgrid (MG), which consists of small-scale power grids with controllable and uncontrollable loads. MGs are a combination of different distributed generation resources (DGRs) which act as a controllable system at the distribution voltage level and supply power or heat to a group of local loads. Due to the high fluctuations of available power at the distribution voltage level, MGs may fail to supply major consumers. Therefore, several MGs are used by dividing consumers into smaller units; each unit is supplied by one MG. In this study, renewable sources such as wind turbine (WT), photovoltaic (PV) cell, and hydrogen storage system are considered as MGs. A novel energy management strategy is proposed using hydrogen storage system and considering uncertainties of renewable sources in the MG. This strategy aims to minimize the operating costs of batteries and hydrogen storage systems as well as unsupplied and surplus energy costs considering load supply constraints. Various resource constraints are employed in the proposed strategy. Moreover, demand response (DR) program is applied for MG optimal operation. The proposed model is implemented on a system using MATLAB software and meta-heuristic gray wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm. The results indicate applying hydrogen storage system and demand-side management (DSM) program could reduce the final cost of MGs and the proposed method has high efficiency in solving complex problems.

Abstract:In order to alleviate worldwide worries about environmental issues, power system operators and planning entities are looking for new energy sources that will produce fewer emissions than conventional fossil-fuel power plants. When it comes to powering their systems, utilities are increasingly choosing renewable energy sources (RESs). Here, microgrids (MG) would furnish the ideal conditions for incorporating RESs. Thus, this study presents an seasonal optimization framework for the short-term operation of an MG, including energy storage and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, while thoroughly exploring the effects of varying climatic factors on the optimal scheduling of resources. The day-ahead MG scheduling is addressed in this model, taking into account the impact of varying irradiances across a year. The resulting single-objective optimization problem is then tackled with the help of the converged barnacles mating optimizer (CBMO), as a robust and effective optimization method. The simulation findings show that the total operating cost of the grid-integrated microgrid is alleviated when a PV model is used in a real-world setting to raise the accuracy of the energy management system. In case 1, the CBMO reduces the operating cost of the MG by 262.784 €ct/day, which is less than the results obtained by some other algorithms. Using the hybrid CBMO, the reported costs for Case 2 is 298.8513 €ct/day. The CBMO approach yielded the best results of 352.1964 €ct on a warm sunny day, 285.2851 €ct on a cold sunny day, 257.7912 €ct on a warm cloudy day, and 252.135 €ct on a cold cloudy day. After running the simulations, it has been found out that the suggested CBMO has the shortest mean simulation time by 114.217 s in Case 3, while other algorithms need longer simulation time such that the GA needs 120.364 s, the PSO needs 118.487 s, the DE needs 118.039 s and the ICA needs 116.287 s. Therefore, the CBMO takes significantly less time than other methods.

Abstract:Micro-grids consist of distributed power generation systems (DGs), distributed energy storage devices (DSs), and loads. Micro-grids are small-scale networks at low voltage levels that are use to provide thermal and electrical loads of small locations where there is no access to the main electrical grid. Given the environmental and economic issues for these areas, micro-grids can be a good solution for energy production. In this paper, determining the size and location of optimal electrical energy storage systems is presented. In other side, a new method based on the cost benefit analysis for optimal sizing of an energy storage system in a microgrid (MG) is proposed. The uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources and the occurrence of defects in the grid connection network and the effect of the contribution of load responses in a micro-grid are taken into account. The combined system consists of wind turbines and fuel cells. Basically, wind power is not definitively available. The new proposed method is based on two-stage randomization design (TSRD) for modeling the effect of wind power uncertainty so that the predicted wind energy error is considered as the main random parameter in the model. A standard probability distribution function is used to represent the error variations. Given the continuity of the mentioned function, the probability error function is extracted using the new discrete method and a certain number of scenarios with a certain probability. Finally, the problem has been transformed into an optimization problem, and a gray wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm has been used to solve it. In the proposed developed model based on local and global search, the algorithm tries to reach the final result in the shortest possible time and with the most precision. The results of the simulation show the efficiency of the proposed method in solving the micro-grid problem.

Abstract:The increasing penetration of distributed generators may harm power system and its control and operations. The microgrid offers a better solution for the issues in grid operation. Undergraduate electrical engineering and postgraduate power system and power electronics students need to understand the working of microgrid with renewable energy resources along with the optimization and scheduling of power quality custom power devices. To cater better understanding of the microgrid with renewable resources, wind, solar, distributed generators, distributed energy storage devices, DSTATCOM, and plug-in electric vehicle charging load are included in this work presented. In this paper, multiobjective optimization for the operation of microgrid to account for uncertainties in a stochastic energy resources management system is considered. Nonlinear constraint optimization to reduce the running cost, losses, and voltage variations is focused for the optimization. Loss sensitivity analysis is used to find the location wind, solar, distributed generators, distributed energy storage devices, and DSTATCOM. Firefly algorithm is used to optimize the size of distributed generators and DSTATCOM. Optimization reduced the loss, power taken from the grid and improves the voltages in the system. This paper is self-explanatory to the undergraduate and postgraduate students to understand the power flow analysis of microgrid with hybrid renewable energies and optimization technique.

Abstract:AbstractDistribution generation (DG), energy storage systems (ESS), distributed reactive sources (DRS), and resilient loads that may operate in both linked and isolated modes form the microgrid (MG). Unpredictable and variable DGs, like as renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic systems, are especially difficult for MG planners to make judgments on (PVES). This work provides a rigorous hybrid optimization approach for designing reconfigurable MGs to tackle technological and economic uncertainty. The suggested technique leverages the moth flame optimization (MFO) algorithm paired with a heuristic fuzzy for optimum DG positioning and reconfiguration, manufacturing costs, and loss avoidance. This hybrid algorithm improves electricity quality, increases customer savings, and benefits the distributed system operators (DSO). The MFO algorithm is used to optimize and reorganize DG sites, and the fuzzy technique is utilized to deal with multi-objective problems, all to reduce microgrid expenses like emission costs and the supply of reliable energy. Using the supplied technique to address three distinct situations helps DSO choose the appropriate structures. For testing, a 33-bus IEEE RDS microgrid is employed. Validation is done utilizing a 24-h daily load pattern and 24-h typical load dispatching behavior for both WES and PVES to ensure reliability. Studies show micro grids outperform present structures.

Abstract:This paper introduces an optimal bi-objective optimization methodology customized for microgrid systems, encompassing economic, technological, and environmental considerations. The framework portrays the objectives of an intelligent microgrid, aiming to minimize operational costs, CO2 emissions, peak-to-average ratio (PAR), and energy consumption while concurrently enhancing user comfort (UC). A scheduled power allocation strategy is formulated to efficiently cater to the energy needs of residential loads. The stochastic nature of wind and solar resources is characterized by modeling wind speed and solar radiation intensity using a beta probability density function (PDF). The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is employed to address optimization challenges. A decision-making process is implemented to select the optimal solution from the non-dominated alternatives. The study presents three scenarios illustrating the optimal operational values for various parameters and energy consumption, providing a comprehensive analysis of the proposed algorithm's efficacy. Leveraging the NSGA-II algorithm, coupled with renewable energy resources and optimal energy storage system scheduling, yielded significant reductions in overall expenses, PAR, CO2 emissions, user discomfort, and energy consumption. MATLAB simulations were conducted to substantiate the efficacy of our proposed approach. The obtained results underscore the effectiveness and productivity of our devised NSGA-II-based approach. Notably, the proposed algorithm demonstrated a substantial reduction in electricity costs by 19.0%, peak-to-average ratio (PAR) by 30.7%, and carbon emissions by 21.7% in scenario-3, as evidenced by a comparative analysis with the unscheduled case.

Abstract:In this study, a fuzzy multi-objective framework is performed for optimization of a hybrid microgrid (HMG) including photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy sources linked with battery energy storage (PV/WT/BES) in a 33-bus distribution network to minimize the cost of energy losses, minimizing the voltage oscillations as well as power purchased minimization from the HMG incorporated forecasted data. The variables are microgrid optimal location and capacity of the HMG components in the network which are determined through a multi-objective improved Kepler optimization algorithm (MOIKOA) modeled by Kepler's laws of planetary motion, piecewise linear chaotic map and using the FDMT. In this study, a machine learning approach using a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) has been used to forecast solar radiation, wind speed, temperature, and load data. The optimization problem is implemented in three optimization scenarios based on real and forecasted data as well as the investigation of the battery's depth of discharge in the HMG optimization in the distribution network and its effects on the different objectives. The results including energy losses, voltage deviations, and purchased power from the HMG have been presented. Also, the MOIKOA superior capability is validated in comparison with the multi-objective conventional Kepler optimization algorithm, multi-objective particle swarm optimization, and multi-objective genetic algorithm in problem-solving. The findings are cleared that microgrid multi-objective optimization in the distribution network considering forecasted data based on the MLP-ANN causes an increase of 3.50%, 2.33%, and 1.98%, respectively, in annual energy losses, voltage deviation, and the purchased power cost from the HMG compared to the real data-based optimization. Also, the outcomes proved that increasing the battery depth of discharge causes the BES to have more participation in the HMG effectiveness on the distribution network objectives and affects the network energy losses and voltage deviation reduction.

Abstract:Recently, the microgrid (MG) structure day‐ahead scheduling is an important aspect and achieved an optimal operation by maximizing the utility function. In this paper, a day‐ahead scheduling of MG and their optimal operation are analyzed with the help of the proposed adaptive algorithm. For the optimal analysis of MG, adaptive grasshopper algorithm (AGOA) with cuckoo search (CS) is proposed. The CS algorithm is utilized to update the learning functions of the GOA, and the optimal performances are evaluated. Here, the photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), battery, and diesel generator (DG) are considered to analyze the optimal scheduling issues, and the main aim is to minimize their generating and operational cost functions. In addition, to maximize the profit of operations in MG, the load demand must be satisfied according to their constraints and objectives. The multiobjective function is defined as the cost functions of MG such as the fuel cost, generation cost, state of charge (SOC), direct cost, reserve cost, and penalty cost, respectively. The proposed method is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink platform and tested with the IEEE 57‐bus system and IEEE 118‐bus system. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, this is compared with the existing methods such as whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and cuttlefish algorithm (CFA), respectively. Before the comparative study, the real‐time data of PV and WT are analyzed for the 24 hours. The SOC of the proposed method is analyzed and is about 80%.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents an optimization solution to reduce the operational cost for a hybrid residential microgrid consisting of diesel generator, wind turbine and photovoltaic array, and battery energy storage system. Traditionally, loads in residential microgrids are mainly supplied by diesel generators. Increasing development and integration of renewable energy resources and battery energy storage system into a residential microgrid, decreases the cost of generation, and increases environmental emission mitigation and generation efficiency. In this study, the optimization problem is solved using a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. The primary objectives of the optimization procedure can be expressed as follows: (i) the minimization of total costs of DERs (ii) reduction of environmental emission in the MG system (iii) increasing the penetration level of RES. Several numerical results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method using demand, local solar irradiance, and wind speed. The proposed method results are shown that there is about a 35% reduction in CO<sub>2</sub> emission in the optimal configuration in comparison with the scenario in which only diesel generators provide the total demand of the MG system. It is observed that installing the optimum configuration during different years brought down the fuel to 44.36 (M-Liter). It is also worth mentioning that the optimal installation of DER units in different years plays an important role in increasing the MG system performance. The simulation results for the case verify the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach.</p>

Abstract:The benefits of more comprehensive energy use and promotion of renewable energy (RE) consumption enable large-scale microgrid deployment. However, the uncertainty of renewable energy sources and the diversity of load types pose a threat to the microgrid's stability. Recently, energy scheduling optimization for microgrids (MGs) has been primarily based on ideal models, but incorporating as many real-world characteristics as feasible can improve the reliability of the optimization outcome. This paper provides a multi-stage methodology for solving the energy management optimization (EMO) problem of MG under uncertainty considering carbon trading market and demand side response (DSR). To begin, scenario analysis method was used to address the uncertainty associated with RE in MG, and four typical scenarios of renewable energy were generated. Then, the flexible configuration and operational constraints of each power source in MG are dealt with under the premise of considering the carbon trading market. The third stage involved merging the characteristics of various load types and analyzing the response impacts of different percentage residential and industrial loads, respectively, using the price-based and load-transfer-based DSR approaches. Finally, quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm was used to obtain the optimal solution. The acquired results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed multi-stage energy optimization framework, and support the following two conclusions: 1) The carbon trading market policy contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption. 2) A high load participation rate in DSR can increase MG operation economics by up to 27.48% compared to not considering DSR.

Abstract:Unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources puts power system operators in different conditions in terms of maintaining the system reliability. Microgrids (MGs) can provide an effective solution for the problems of grid-connected renewable energy sources due to their tuning capability and flexibility. In this study, a stochastic optimization strategy was proposed for participating in energy market operations considering demand response (DR). The results indicated the operating cost decreased when the MG implemented DR programs. Also, DR program could shift energy consumption from on- to off-peak hours and flatten the load curve. Therefore, a scheduling model was presented for the operation of energy carriers and reserves considering security constraints of power and natural gas grids in interconnected hubs as well as responsive load participation using the developed water wave optimization (WWO) algorithm. The objective function of this model aimed to minimize the operating cost of sources to supply electrical and thermal loads applied to the proposed MG. WWO is a meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the behavior of water waves. The waves formed on the sea surface have complex, but interesting, relationships that can be used to solve optimization problems. In this algorithm, each problem solution is encoded as a water wave and undergoes changes in the problem search space based on three behaviors of propagation, refraction, and decay of water waves or problem solutions. The simplicity of the structure of this method, elitism and the ability to escape from local points due to the existence of different search operators and the mutation of generations have led to the use of this method. The results indicated a decline in operating costs through electrical and thermal responsive load participation and thermal energy storage system. Results of the proposed model revealed a correlation between the electricity price and natural gas consumption, indicating multi-carrier energy grids should be examined and optimized simultaneously.

Abstract:Optimal economic scheduling of microgrids with photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation has gained increased attention during recent years. Integration of renewable energy resources in microgrids requires increasingly active control and management of energy storages and demand response (DR). In this paper, a risk-based stochastic optimal energy management model is developed for microgrid with renewables, energy storage and load control by time-of-use-based DR programs. Microgrid includes PV system, wind system, micro-turbine, fuel cell, electric vehicle (EV), and energy storage. Information-gap decision theory (IGDT) is employed to address the uncertainty of loads and to provide the operating strategies for the microgrid controllable energy resources. This proposed model has been solved as a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) in General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) software and simulation results in different conditions are studied and discussed. Three different risk management strategies have been studied such as risk-averse, risk-neutral and risk-seeker mode. The simulation results indicate that the impacts of risk-averseness or risk-seeker of the decision maker affect the system operation. For instance, the results showed the DR program's role in risk-averse and risk-taking strategies, impacting consumption and costs. The proposed model ensures the risk-averse decision-maker that if the uncertain parameter deviates within the optimum robustness region, the final cost will not exceed the critical cost. On the other hand, the risk-seeking decision-maker can reach lower final costs by accepting the risks if the uncertain parameter deviates favorably within the opportunity region. Decision-makers can manage risks by adjusting consumption. Thus, considering the cost of risk management is crucial, as it increases with robust or opportunistic approaches.

Abstract:This work considers energy management in a grid-connected microgrid which consists of multiple conventional generators (CGs), renewable generators (RGs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). A two-stage optimization approach is presented to schedule the power generation, aimed at minimizing the long-term average operating cost subject to operational and service constraints. The first stage of optimization determines hourly unit commitment of the CGs via a day-ahead scheduling, and the second stage performs economic dispatch of the CGs, ESSs and energy trading via an hour-ahead scheduling. The combined solution meets the need of handling large uncertainties in the load demand and renewable generation, and provides an efficient solution under limited computational resource which meets both short-term and long-term quality-of-service requirements. The performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated by simulations based on real load demand and renewable generation data.

Abstract:Microgrids require efficient energy management systems to optimize the operation of microgrid sources and achieve economic efficiency. Bi-level energy management model is proposed in this paper to minimize the operational cost of a grid-tied microgrid under load variations and uncertainties in renewable sources while satisfying the various technical constraints. The first level is day ahead scheduling of generation units based on day ahead forecasting of renewable energy sources and load demand. In this paper, a recent meta-heuristic algorithm called Coronavirus Herd Immunity Optimizer (CHIO) is used to solve the problem of day-ahead scheduling of batteries, which is a complex constrained non-linear optimization problem, while the Lagrange multiplier method is used to determine the set-point of the Diesel Generator (DG). The second level of the proposed EMS is rescheduling and updating the set-points of sources in real-time according to the actual solar irradiance, wind speed, load, and grid tariff. In this paper, a novel real-time strategy is proposed to keep the economic operation during real-time under uncertainties. The obtained results show that the CHIO-based bi-level EMS demonstrates an optimal economic operation for a grid-connected microgrid in real-time when there are uncertainties in weather, utility tariffs, and load forecasts.

Abstract:With the rapid proliferation of non-dispatchable energy sources, the need for demand-side management (DSM) strategies has become crucial to ensure affordability and reliability for end-users. The application of various diversified DSM strategies in the microgrid energy management system (EMS) is gaining popularity. This paper aims to solve the energy management problem of the microgrid in conjunction with both customer-oriented and utility-oriented DSM strategies for the first time in the literature. In light of this, a stochastic EMS framework is developed to implement and analyze the flexible load shaping DSM strategy, price-based, and incentive-based demand response programs (DRPs) in the presence of non-dispatchable energy resources. Further, the flexible price-oriented load model is adopted for price-driven and incentive-driven DRPs to depict the realistic assessment of consumers' sensitivity to market prices. The scenario construction approach is employed to address the stochastic nature of renewable power generation, market prices, and load demand. With the complexities as mentioned above, the problem needs to be solved with a powerful optimizer sufficiently to enhance energy efficiency and optimize energy utilization. Hence, the recently reported novel metaheuristic algorithm (Black Widow Optimization) is applied to solve the proposed MG energy management problem in the MATLAB environment. The IEEE-34 node distribution feeder-based MG network is modified to study the proposed algorithm's performance, and a detailed analysis of various techno-economic indices is presented. The obtained simulation results are compared with existing popular algorithms to prove the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence, computational time, an optimum solution and the real-time market bid prices were considered in analysis for day-ahead scheduling of microgrid network.

Abstract:The microgrid (MG) implementation has changed the power system's configuration, and it has optimally permitted the integration of renewable energy resources (RERs). This paper addresses an optimal load management control method application for an economic load shedding problem. The control scheme is based on coordination of the diesel generator (DG) system combined with a standalone MG that contains RER (wind and photovoltaic (PV), two biomass generation systems and an energy storage system (ESS). The control model minimises the DG unit's fuel cost incorporated into an MG where a milling plant is part of the loads. The optimal control scheme has been executed to minimise the DG's operating cost, maximise the energy from RERs and finally increase the MG's profit during the load shedding operation. This strategy develops an under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) scheme to control the MG based-multiobjective optimally. An adaptive UFLS strategy is designed to coordinate the system behaviour by adjusting the distributed generation in the function of variation in the demand side. It is observed that it is economically reliable to solve the load shedding problem and save the fuel cost of the diesel generator in the MG power system by optimally fashioning the control scheme. The profitability of this adaptive strategy is impressive, which is about 100%. Besides, the application of different distributed energy structures in an MG impacts the demand side. It implies adjusting the total power supply fluctuations, which remarkably improves the MG power system's lifecycle cost (LC) and stabilise the system frequency and voltage.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are playing an increasingly important role in modern transportation systems, as a result of the ecological crisis and the energy crisis. The enormous potential of the storage capacity of the large fleet of PHEVs, together with the flexibility they can offer power systems through effective control, cannot be ignored. Meanwhile, renewable energy sources (RESs) present significant challenges for energy management scheduling. This article analyzes a microgrid comprising several RESs, such as photovoltaics, fuel cells, wind turbines, microturbines, a battery as energy storage, and PHEVs. Monte Carlo simulation is used to address uncertainties in model development. To account for possible inaccuracies in PHEV charging predictions, electrical load consumption, hourly energy price fluctuations, and RES power output, the study uses a 24-h simulation. Furthermore, a nickel metal hydride battery is used in the microgrid to evaluate the operational impact of different storage systems. The optimization aims to minimize the total cost of the network, including the cost of load supply, the cost of PHEV charging demands, and the cost of power losses. The complexity of the problem requires a novel optimization technique, in this case, the modified manta ray foraging optimization algorithm, which provides a comprehensive global search of the entire search space. Numerical results reveal that the modified manta ray foraging optimization technique demonstrates favorable convergence properties and lower generation costs compared to the classical manta ray foraging optimization method and other recent optimization algorithms.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel optimization strategy for hybrid-renewable energy systems in microgrids. The multi-objective optimization approach is formulated for a PV-wind-diesel-battery hybrid system. Its main objectives are to minimize the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and loss of power supply probability (LPSP) whilst maximizing the use of renewable energy sources (RES). The proposed optimization strategy combines the Taguchi method with a novel fuzzy decision-maker-based multi-objective optimization algorithm. It implements, a) an energy management strategy to optimize the use of the energy sources, b) a Taguchi method to determine the upper bounds of the model's decision variables, c) a multi-objective moth flame optimization algorithm to optimize the size of the renewable energy sources, and d) a fuzzy decision-making approach to obtain the best Pareto front. The proposed strategy was implemented to optimize the design of a hybrid renewable energy system based on three different scenarios consisting of 10, 15, and 20 residential houses located in Sønderborg, a town in the Region of Southern Denmark. The results of the proposed model in terms of loss of power supply probability and levelized cost of energy for the scenarios I, II, and III are [0.224, 0.754], [0.313, 0.612], and [0.368, 0.547] respectively. In addition, the optimal design of the hybrid renewable-based microgrid system for scenarios I, II, and III are [PV: 32 kW, AD: 4.86, WT: 6], [PV: 36 kW, AD: 4.73, WT: 7], and [PV: 47 kW, AD: 5, WT: 7], respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOMFO) in solving the optimization problem was examined and the results were further compared with those of the Non-Dominated Sorting Algorithm II(NSGA-II), Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO), and Multi-Objective Social Engineering Optimizer (MOSEO).
