Abstract:Corbicula fluminea is an aggressive invasive species that has successfully colonized aquatic habitats worldwide, producing changes in natural environments and impacting endemic populations. As disturbed environments may favor the adaptive success of exotic species over native ones, we studied the fitness response of two freshwater bivalves, invasive C. fluminea and native Diplodon delodontus , to the presence of metals in the Parana de la Palmas River. To assess the health status of both species, we analyzed morphological and histological alterations in the digestive gland and their relation to metal concentrations in this organ and in the water. Water and specimens sampling took place in the first section of the delta of the Parana River in June and September. Most metal concentrations increased in the river, although in the digestive gland only iron in D. delodontus and nickel and zinc in C. fluminea increased seasonally. Digestive gland factor and hepatosomatic index indicated higher values in C. fluminea in both periods. Despite histological analysis showing a decrease in atrophic tubules frequency in both species, which was followed by histomorphometric parameters of the epithelium and lumen of the digestive tubules, C. fluminea exhibited a greater physiological capacity for metal metabolism and recovery. These results suggest that the physiological characteristics of the Asian clam C. fluminea , combined with its reproductive efficiency and broad dispersal capacities, could explain its invasive dispersal competence over the D. delodontus in the disturbed environmental conditions observed in the Parana de las Palmas River.

First multi-compartment approach to microplastics in an urbanized estuary of Argentina: The case of Magallana gigas

Abstract:This study assesses MP in water, sediment, gills, and digestive tract of the oyster Magallana gigas in three Bahía Blanca estuary sites, Argentina, using, Pollution Load Index (PLI) and SEM/EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) techniques. A total of 51 MPs were detected in water (mean: 16 items L-1) and 126 in sediments (mean: 1399 items Kg-1) with no significant differences between sites. In oysters, 186 MPs were found, with no significant differences in the MPs load between gills (mean: 2.41 items g-1 w.w), digestive tract (2.06 ± 2 items g-1 w.w), and the total tissues. Transparent fiber MPs were predominant, with cellulose, polyamides, polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene being common polymers. SEM/EDX showed Si, Fe, Cl, Na, Ti, Al, K, Ca and suspended particulate matter on MP surfaces. The PLI indicated a low-risk level for estuary bivalves and water, suggesting minimal MPs impact.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) global ubiquitously affects particularly coastal regions under significant anthropogenic pressures, where there are limited monitoring efforts. Bivalves are valuable sentinels of MPs contamination. This investigation determined MP contamination in oysters, clams, and mussels at Santos-São Vicente, a heavily urbanized estuary in Brazil, focusing on socio-environmental predictors, spatial distribution, and interspecies variations. Elevated MPs levels were linked to higher human modification (β = 0.5747, p = 0.0223) and reduced population density (β = −8.918e-06, p = 0.0443), regardless of vegetation cover (p > 0.05). Such a negative connection between population density and MP contamination occurred due to the significant presence of industrial and port activities, leading to high MP discharges despite a low population. The simultaneous presence of the three species at specific sites is an intrinsic limitation for broad spatial studies, depending on their environmental availability. Despite higher concentrations in clams, mussels and oysters also exhibited spatial variations in MP concentrations, serving as suitable sentinels. The central and left segments of the estuary displayed elevated MP concentrations, consistent with a well-known contamination gradient. Clams accumulated more MPs (1.97 ± 1.37 [0.00 – 5.55] particles.g −1 ) than mussels (0.72 ± 1.07 [0.00 – 7.74] particles.g −1 ) and oysters (0.70 ± 1.03 [0.00 – 7.70] particles.g −1 ), suggesting higher bioavailability in sediments than the water column. MPs found across all species were predominantly smaller (<1000 μm), fragments or fibers, and colorless. These discoveries lay a groundwork for prospective global investigations by linking MPs concentrations to socio-environmental predictors, contributing to the development of local mitigation measures and global discussions.

Abstract:Microplastics (MP) and microcystins (MCs) are two co-occurring pollutants in freshwater ecosystems that pose significant risks to aquatic organisms and human health. This study investigates the interactions between MP and MCs and their effects on the metabolic responses of freshwater aquaculture. Asian clams have been used as an indicator of microplastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems. The present study investigates metabolic responses of Asian clams during microplastic and microcystin-LR stress to identify health impacts and elucidate mechanistic effects of external stressors on Asian clams. A liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC–MS)-based metabolomics approach was used to identify metabolic perturbations and histological section technique was used to assess changes of tissues from different Asian clam treatment groups. The results showed significantly pathological changes in the gills and hepatopancreas in experimental clam compared to control (healthy) clam. Metabolomics revealed alterations of many metabolites in the hepatopancreas of six Asian clam comparison groups, reflecting perturbations in several molecular pathways, including energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism, protein degradation/tissue damage, and oxidative stress. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding the interactions between MP and MCs and the need for proactive measures to safeguard freshwater ecosystems and human health.

Abstract:Global environmental abundance of microplastics (MPs) is increasing. MPs may sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), accumulate in and cause deleterious effects on exposed organisms. This study investigated and compared the accumulation and effects of MPs and MP-associated PCB in the two indigenous aquatic organisms in Viet Nam, the white hard clams, Meretrix lyrata, and the giant river prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The test organisms were exposed to either polyethylene microbeads (PEMBs), waterborne polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB-153), or PEMB-associated PCB-153 (PEMB-PCB) over 28 days. Organismal MP accumulation, survival, and weight gain were examined at various sampling intervals. In general, MP accumulation was significantly greater in the clams than in the prawns. A significant quantity of MPs was observed in the digestive systems of the organisms after 0.5-day and during 28-day exposure. Although the effect of MPs and MP-associated PCB-153 on mean survival rate was not statistically significant, this effect was significant towards the end of the 28-day exposure. In addition, while MP-associated PCB-153 did not significantly affect the weight gain of the prawns, it significantly reduced weight gain in clams. Given the global increases of MPs and HOCs (and in southeast Asia specifically), and the importance of the hard clams and giant river prawns in the Indo-Pacific region, this present study provides valuable data to enhance our understanding of the effects of MPs and HOCs on these species.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution's impact on the marine ecosystem is widely recognized. This study compared the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on two bivalve species, Ruditapes philippinarum (clam) and Chlamys farreri (scallop), at two particle concentrations (10 and 1000 μg/L). MPs were found in the digestive glands and gills of both species. Although clearance rates showed no significant changes, exposure to different MPs caused oxidative stress, energy disruption, and lipid metabolism disorders in both clam and scallop. Histopathological damage was observed in gills and digestive glands. IBR values indicated increasing toxicity with concentration, with PET being more toxic than PE. WOE model suggested increasing hazard with concentration, highlighting higher PET toxicity on clam digestive glands. In contrast, PE hazard increased in gills, showing different species responses. R. philippinarum exhibited higher sensitivity to MPs than C. farreri, providing insights for assessing ecological risk under realistic conditions and stress conditions.

Abstract:Clams, Meretrix meretrix, were one of the favorite aquatic products in Taiwan and the world. It was reported that the water pollutants such as heavy metals and chemicals might accumulate in the clam body and shell through filter-feeding behavior. Thus, the bivalves could be used as bioindicators in the aquatic environment. The present study analyzed 20 trace elements, Mg, Sr, Li, Cd, Ba, Mn, Al, U, Ti, Pb, Nd, B, S, Zn, Fe, P, Na, K, Cu, and Ni, in the shells of the clams collected from the wild coastal area and cultured ponds to evaluate which elements have the potential to be biomarkers. The concentrations of 20 elements were detected by Solution-Based Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (SB-ICPMS). Among them, Cd, Al, U, Ti, Nd, S, and K were below the detection limit. The remaining elements were analyzed for accumulation. The levels of Zn, Fe, and Ni possess high variation in an identical environment; so, a PCA was conducted without these three elements to reduce noise. The PCA result proved that the clam could absorb specific trace elements from the habitat. After a period of time, the contents of the absorption in the shells of the clams living in an identical environment became more similar. The analyzed element, Pb, was not found with a special difference in this study. The levels of Na, Sr, Mg, B, Mn, P, Ba, Li, and Cu reflected different sampling sites, which suggested that these elements in the species M. meretrix had the potential to be used as biomarkers for assessing heavy metal accumulation in the environment.

Abstract:The ingestion of clams ( Meretrix ) with microplastics (MP) contamination could pose potential risk to human health. The characteristics and potential risks of MP identified in wild-clam and farm-clam from South Yellow Sea Mudflat were studied comprehensively in this paper. The results indicated that MP were identified in both wild-clam (3.4–21.3 items/individual, 2.11–10.65 items/g) and farm-clam (1.3–20.8 items/individual, 0.62–8.67 items/g) among 21 sampling sites along South Yellow Sea Mudflat. The MP abundance of clams from marine estuarine or coast ports were significantly higher than those from purely marine coast mudflat, implying that environmental habitats played an important role on MP characteristics. MP abundance were significantly and positively related to shell length, shell height, shell width and soft tissue wet weight by Pearson test, suggesting the bigger the shell, there existed more MP abundance. Among MP in wild-clams and farm-clams, fragment, fiber were most abundant MP shapes, most MP's sizes were lower than 0.25 mm, the predominant colors were black, red, blue and transparent, chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) was the major polymer. Additionally, estimated dietary intake (EDI) of MP for adults via consumption of wild-clam and farm-clam were 1123.33 ± 399.97 and 795.07 ± 326.72 items/kg/year, respectively, suggesting EDI values of wild-clams were higher than those of farm-clams, and MP intake via wild-clam consumption were more than that via farm-clam consumption. The polymer risk indexes (PRI) of MP in total tissue and digestive system for wild-clam were 1297.8 ± 92.15 (hazard level: IV ~ V), 1038 ± 69.55 (IV ~ V), respectively, while PRI of MP in total tissue and digestive system for farm-clam were 979.92 ± 75.45 (III ~ IV), 735 ± 47.78 (III ~ IV), respectively, implying that PRI and hazard level of MP from wild-clam were higher than those from farm-clam, and the potential risks would decrease greatly when digestive systems of clams are removed during ingestion.

Abstract:Toxic effects of trace metals on digestive gland and gill cytoarchitecture were studied in the mussel Mytilus platensis after metal detection in the environment. Mussels were collected from the Port of San Antonio Este and from a reference site called Isla Mejillón, both in Rio Negro province (Argentina). Histological techniques, morphometrical analysis and lipofuscin detection with Nile blue method were performed. Mussels from the seaport presented dilated hemolymphatic vessels with numerous hemocytes in the gill filaments and fused filaments in the frontal zone. Morphometric analysis of the gill filaments showed an increase in the epithelial thickness of the lateral zone that bears cilia, and we infer that water filtering might be affected. The sublateral zone was also thickened, probably interfering with gas exchange. A reduction in the abfrontal zone epithelial thickness was also noticed, so water pumping, lubrication and cleaning of the gills might be impaired. Digestive glands of seaport mussels accumulated lipofuscin granules within the digestive cells, accounting for lipid and protein peroxidation. The observed histological alterations in gill and digestive gland in mussels from North Patagonia seaport are relevant findings to be considered as biomarkers of effect after exposure to metals.

Abstract:The invasive Asian clam species, Corbicula fluminea , has significant ecological and societal implications at both local and international levels due to its nutritional aspects. C. fluminea from four urban rivers in Bangladesh exhibited negative allometric growth and degree of contamination with potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which posed a concern to human health based on the AAS and USEPA risk models. The highest mean concentration of PTEs followed a decreasing order: Zn (155.08 ± 4.98 mg/kg) > Cu (53.96 ± 7.61 mg/kg) > Mn (14.29 ± 3.25 mg/kg) > Cd (2.23 ± 0.10 mg/kg) > Pb (1.64 ± 0.14 mg/kg) > As (1.51 ± 0.45 mg/kg) > Ni (1.25 ± 0.27 mg/kg) > Cr (0.65 ± 0.02 mg/kg) in C. fluminea and raising safety concerns. With the exception of Cr and Mn, all element levels were exceeded safety guideline value (SGV) (mg/kg. ww) and exhibited a strong positive correlation ( p 1, and As showed a non-carcinogenic risk in children at OBR, BR, and MR site. The hazard index (HI > 1) value at the BR and MR sites indicated a public health risk associated with the clam. The target cancer risk (TCR) values for As, Cd, and Ni showed that consuming clams posed a carcinogenic risk to human health. These findings suggest that eating these clams may put consumers at significant risk for health issues related to As, Cd, Ni, and Mn exposure. The study emphasizes the need for strict monitoring and preventative measures to reduce the health risks posed by PTEs contamination in clams.

Abstract:In recent years micro- and nanoplastics and metal-oxide nanomaterials have been found in several environmental compartments. The Antarctic soft clam Laternula elliptica is an endemic Antarctic species having a wide distribution in the Southern Ocean. Being a filter-feeder, it could act as suitable bioindicator of pollution from nanoparticles also considering its sensitivity to various sources of stress. The present study aims to assess the impact of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NP) and the nanometal titanium-dioxide (n-TiO2) on genome-wide transcript expression of L. elliptica either alone and in combination and at two toxicological relevant concentrations (5 and 50 µg/L) during 96 h exposure. Transcript-target qRT-PCR was performed with the aim to identify suitable biomarkers of exposure and effects. As expected, at the highest concentration tested, the clustering was clearer between control and exposed clams. A total of 221 genes resulted differentially expressed in exposed clams and control ones, and 21 of them had functional annotation such as ribosomal proteins, antioxidant, ion transport (osmoregulation), acid-base balance, immunity, lipid metabolism, cell adhesion, cytoskeleton, apoptosis, chromatin condensation and cell signaling. At functional level, relevant transcripts were shared among some treatments and could be considered as general stress due to nanoparticle exposure. After applying transcript-target approach duplicating the number of clam samples, four ecologically relevant transcripts were revealed as biomarkers for PS-NP, n-TiO2 and their combination at 50 µg/L, that could be used for monitoring clams' health status in different Antarctic localities.

Abstract:AbstractAlthough various studies have reported the bioaccumulation of metals in bivalves of commercial interest from the Gulf of California (GC), the risk associated with their consumption remains poorly understood. In this study, our own and bibliographic concentrations of 14 elements in 16 species of bivalves from 23 locations were used to investigate (1) the species-specific and regional accumulation of metals and arsenic in bivalves, (2) the human health risks by age and sex, and (3) the maximum allowable consumption rates (CRlim). The assessments were done according to the US Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The results indicate that the bioaccumulation of elements varies markedly between groups (oysters > mussels > clams) and localities (higher on Sinaloa due to intense anthropogenic activities). However, consuming bivalves from the GC remains safe for human health. To prevent health effects for residents or consumers on the GC, we recommend (1) following the CRlim proposed herein; (2) monitoring levels of Cd, Pb, and As (inorganic) in bivalves, as the elements of top concern, mainly when are consumed by children; (3) calculating CRlim for more species and locations, including at least: As, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn; and (4) determine the regional consumption rates of bivalves.

Abstract:Nanoplastics and engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), increasingly being detected in the marine environment and recognized as a potential threat for marine biota at the global level including in polar areas. Few studies have assessed the impact of these anthropogenic nanoparticles in the microbiome of marine invertebrates, however combined exposure resembling natural scenarios has been overlooked. The present study aimed to evaluate the single and combined effects of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NP) as proxy for nanoplastics and nanoscale titanium dioxide (nano-TiO 2 ) on the prokaryotic communities associated with the gill tissue of the Antarctic soft-shell clam Laternula elliptica , a keystone species of marine benthos Wild-caught specimens were exposed to two environmentally relevant concentrations of carboxylated PS NP (PS-COOH NP, ∼ 62 nm size) and nano-TiO 2 (Aeroxide P25, ∼ 25 nm) as 5 and 50 μg/L either single and combined for 96h in a semi-static condition.Our findings show a shift in microbiome composition in gills of soft-shell clams exposed to PS NP and nano-TiO 2 either alone and in combination with a decrease in the relative abundance of OTU1 (Spirochaetaceae). In addition, an increase of gammaproteobacterial OTUs affiliated to MBAE14 and Methylophagaceae (involved in ammonia denitrification and associated with low-quality water), and the OTU Colwellia rossensis (previously recorded in polluted waters) was observed. Our results suggest that nanoplastics and nano-TiO 2 alone and in combination induce alterations in microbiome composition by promoting the increase of negative taxa over beneficial ones in the gills of the Antarctic soft-shell clam. An increase of two low abundance OTUs in PS-COOH NPs exposed clams was also observed . A predicted gene function analysis revealed that sugar, lipid, protein and DNA metabolism were the main functions affected by either PS-COOH NP and nano-TiO 2 exposure. The molecular functions involved in the altered affiliated OTUs are novel for nano-CEC exposures.

However, to date, few studies have focused on the mechanism underlying the toxicity of NPs, and the differences between this mechanism and that governing the toxicity of MPs have also not been thoroughly characterized. In this study, the genotoxicity, intestinal damage, and intestinal flora in Corbicula fluminea exposed to micro/nanoplastics were investigated through RNA sequencing, histopathology, and 16S rRNA sequencing, respectively. Significant differences in differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed between MP and NP exposure groups. It was observed that NPs preferentially elicited the process related to cellular components and triggered the apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in various tissues, especially in indirectly contacted tissues, while MPs induced the innate immune response and activated the complement and coagulation cascades (complement system) pathway. Both MPs and NPs can induce an inflammatory response and cause epithelial damage in the intestines, and they can notably change the gut microbial community structure. However, the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Mycoplasma) was observed to increase only in the MP-treated group, which exacerbated intestinal damage. Unlike MPs, the effect of NPs on the intestinal microflora was highly limited, while NPs elicited more severe damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier. Abstract:Laguna de Bay, the 3rd largest lake in Southeast Asia, is the most significant source of freshwater fish in the Philippines. With decades of unregulated discharge of industrial, domestic, and agricultural wastewaters into the lake, this study investigates the apportionment of heavy metals from the bottom sediments and its impact on the toxicity of Corbicula fluminea (Asiatic clam), a popular food item in the markets. The sediment samples from the western part of the lake contained higher Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn and lower As and Cr concentrations compared to the eastern part. There were positive correlations for As, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn and negative correlations for Cd and Ni concentrations noted between sediments and C. fluminea. Human health risk associated with the consumption of C. fluminea collected from Laguna de Bay was attributed to the following heavy metals: Cu > As > Zn > Cd > Pb > Cr > Ni. Interestingly, the observed trend in toxicities of the shellfish was consistent with the transport phenomenon of heavy metals facilitated by the counterclockwise direction of the bottom current. This study strongly suggests the re-evaluation of the waste management plan in the industrial zones and policies regulating the sale of the shellfish harvest.

Abstract:Estuarine coastal water and sediments collected from multiple locations within the middle Río de la Plata (RDLP) estuary were analyzed in order to identify the presence of microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) and mesoplastics (MePs, 5–25 mm) in one of the most significant estuaries in the Southwestern Atlantic. The present study represents one of the first researches to survey MPs and MePs contamination in key stations at RDLP estuary. Average concentrations of 14.17 ± 5.50 MPs/L and 10.00 MePs/L were detected in water samples, while 547.83 ± 620.06 MPs/kg (dry weight) and 74.23 ± 47.29 MePs/kg d.w. were recorded in sediments. The greatest abundances were observed in the more anthropized areas, near urban settlements. Fibers were the most conspicuous plastic items in water and sediments, followed by fragments. On the other hand, surface sediments, and 50 cm and 100 cm-depth sediments also presented MPs and MePs indicating they could serve as a stratigraphic indicator for recently formed sediments. The main polymer type identified were acrylic fibers, followed by polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Besides, SEM-EDX detected the presence of Si, Fe, Ti, Al and Cl onto the plastics' surface. These elements may serve as additives to enhance the plastics' properties, such as in the case of Ti, or they could originate from the environment, like biogenic Si or Fe, and Al possibly as a component of the suspended particles or sediments adhered to the micro or meso plastics. Finally, the results of the present study showed that MPs and MePs are commonly found in waters and also tend to be trapped in sediments of the RDLP estuary supporting the assertion that these areas play a substantial role in influencing the transport, dispersion, and buildup of MPs in estuarine regions.

Abstract:This study investigates the potential of MPs as carriers of pollutants as they can strengthen bioaccumulation of toxic metals on marine organisms. For the first time, the interaction of the metal palladium (Pd) with the widespread MPs, both with increasing concentrations in water environments from anthropogenic sources, was tested. Mytilus galloprovincialis , an important seafood product, was exposed to Pd (24 h) in two ways: water-dissolved and MPs-adsorbed, with depuration followed for 144 h. Quantification of Pd in tissues shown an accumulation 2–3 times higher (59 % of initial Pd) for mussels exposed to MPs-adsorbed Pd and higher in digestive gland than when exposed to water-dissolved Pd (25 %; higher in gills). Additionally, it was demonstrated that Pd induced oxidative stress and altered the feeding behavior of mussels. Therefore, this work support MPs as being vectors of metals (i.e. Pd) to enhance their bioaccumulation on marine organisms which highlights ecological risk of these emerging pollutants.

Abstract:This work set out to study the effects of cadmium (Cd) in sediments on the antioxidant enzyme activities in the digestive gland of Asian clam Corbicula fluminea and to explore the potential for applying these responses to evaluate the Cd-contaminated sediment. Additionally, diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique was used to predict the response of its antioxidant defense system. The sediments, collected from Taihu Lake, were spiked with Cd at different concentrations (0.72, 0.91, 1.62, 2.59, 11.2, 20.4 and 40.6 mg kg(-1), dry weight). Asian clam was cultivated for 28 days. Concentrations of Cd in the body of Asian clam had a good relationship with concentrations of Cd in overlying water and sediments, as measured by DGT. Cd affected these biochemical parameters significantly, especially for superoxide (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and glutathione (GSH), which began to show higher sensitivity and have a significant difference in low dosage (0.91 mg Cd kg(-1)) compared with blank. Contents of MDA and MT, which were induced by Cd, increased with the increasing Cd concentration in sediments and reached peak values at 11.2 and 20.4 mg kg(-1), respectively, after 28 days exposure. All of these results suggested that biochemical responses cooperated in detoxifying and maintaining cellular metabolic homeostasis. The R(2) of regression analysis between the contents of MT and the concentrations of Cd measured by DGT, in sediments and soft body were 0.71, 0.94 and 0.88 after 28 days exposure. This suggested that DGT measurement could predict the response of MT. Cd accumulation, GSH and MT were indispensable biomarkers and the MDA content and DGT appeared to be promising biomarkers. The results clearly indicated that Cd could induce oxidative stress in the digestive gland of Asian clam. The combination of biomonitors with DGT can obtain different information about Cd bioavailability and confirm the significance of applying a suite of biomarkers rather than a selective index to assess the sublethal effect. It also offered theoretical methods for the prediction of sediment Cd pollution.
