Abstract:Superhydrophobicity has received significant attention over the past three decades owing to its significant potential in self-cleaning, anti-icing and drag reduction surfaces, energy-harvesting devices, antibacterial coatings, and enhanced heat transfer applications. Superhydrophobicity can be obtained via the roughening of an intrinsically hydrophobic surface, the creation of a re-entrant geometry, or by the roughening of a hydrophilic surface followed by a conformal coating of a hydrophobic material. Intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces have poor thermophysical properties, such as thermal conductivity, and thus are not suitable for heat transfer applications. Re-entrant geometries, although versatile in applications where droplets are deposited, break down during spatially random nucleation and flood the surface. Chemical functionalization of rough metallic substrates, although promising, is not utilized because of the poor durability of conformal hydrophobic coatings. Here we develop a radically different approach to achieve stable superhydrophobicity. By utilizing laser processing and thermal oxidation of copper (Cu) to create a high surface energy hierarchical copper oxide (CuO), followed by repeatable and passive atmospheric adsorption of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we show that stable superhydrophobicity with apparent advancing contact angles ≈160° and contact angle hysteresis as low as ≈20° can be achieved. We exploit the structure length scale and structure geometry-dependent VOC adsorption dynamics to rationally design CuO nanowires with enhanced superhydrophobicity. To gain an understanding of the VOC adsorption physics, we utilized X-ray photoelectron and ion mass spectroscopy to identify the chemical species deposited on our surfaces in two distinct locations: Urbana, IL, United States and Beijing, China. To test the stability of the atmosphere-mediated superhydrophobic surfaces during heterogeneous nucleation, we used high-speed optical microscopy to demonstrate the occurrence of dropwise condensation and stable coalescence-induced droplet jumping. Our work not only provides rational design guidelines for developing passively durable superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent flooding-resistance and self-healing capability but also sheds light on the key role played by the atmosphere in governing wetting.

Abstract:Hybrid-structured surfaces consisting of microgrooves and nanocrystals have been modified with a self-assembled monolayer (CF3(CF)(7)CH2CH2SiCl3) via low-cost, mass-production and highly integrated nano/microfabrication. The microgrooves decorated with nanocrystals were patterned and fabricated on a silicon substrate to yield an ultrahydrophobic surface with an anti-sticking property. The nanocrystals were etched by means of oxidation of the silicon surface. Contours of nanostructured surfaces were inspected with a SEM and an AFM; the surface roughness and level of hydrophobicity depended on the duration of etching. Comparison of contact angles for microliter droplets on those designed surfaces showed that the hydrophobicity of the solid surfaces became amplified with nanocrystals and accurately modulated with a pattern density (f(1)), ranging from 112 degrees to 173.1 degrees, to generate a much increased gradient of Gibbs surface energy that served to transport the droplet. To characterize the anti-sticking capability of those hybrid-structured surfaces in quantity, we measured the heights and frequencies of rebounding droplets on those test surfaces with varied roughnesses. Similar to the interfacial characteristics of a lotus leaf, our designed surfaces feature superior aqueous repellence, little hysteresis and slight adhesion, such that droplets hence roll off effortlessly and bounce off repeatedly.
A Facile All-Solution-Processed Surface with High Water Contact Angle and High Water Adhesive Force

Abstract:A series of sticky superhydrophobicity surfaces with high water contact angle and high water adhesive force is facilely prepared via an all-solution-processed method based on polymerization-induced phase separation between liquid crystals (LCs) and epoxy resin, which produces layers of epoxy microspheres (EMSs) with nanofolds on the surface of a substrate. The morphologies and size distributions of EMSs are confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Results reveal that the obtained EMS coated-surface exhibits high apparent contact angle of 152.0° and high water adhesive force up to 117.6 μN. By varying the composition of the sample or preparing conditions, the sizes of the produced EMSs can be artificially regulated and, thus, control the wetting properties and water adhesive behaviors. Also, the sticky superhydrophobic surface exhibits excellent chemical stability, as well as long-term durability. Water droplet transportation experiments further prove that the as-made surface can be effectively used as a mechanical hand for water transportation applications. Based on this, it is believed that the simple method proposed in this paper will pave a new way for producing a sticky superhydrophobic surface and obtain a wide range of use.
Pinning Effects of Wettability Contrast on Pendant Drops on Chemically Patterned Surfaces

Abstract:The morphology and dynamics of the pendant drops attached to chemically patterned surfaces (pattern-pinned pendant drops) with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrasts were investigated experimentally and numerically. During the experiments, the evolution of the contact angle and the maximum drop volume were found to be different from those of traditional pendant drops, whose contact line is pinned on the edge of the tips (tip-pinned pendant drops), and the deviation is related to both the pattern radius and the wettability contrast. Then, a hypothesis was proposed to illustrate the behavior of the contact line after it reached the pattern boundary, based on the premise that the pattern boundary possessed a certain width or fuzziness. It was concluded that the special phenomena in this case were due to the movement of the contact line, and the maximum contact radius was presented as a key parameter for the pattern-pinned drops, which is directly related to the stability and the maximum volume of the drops. Furthermore, through a simulation study on pattern pinned pendant drops, the vibration performance of the meniscus was revealed as a superposition of two vibration behaviors including a low-frequency vibration due to the inertia effects and a high-frequency vibration due to the surface tension gradient within the boundary region. In addition, the hypothesis proposed above was also verified. Finally, a forecasting model to predict the maximum contact radius for the pattern-pinned pendant drops was built for different liquids and pattern wettabilities. This allows us to effectively design and optimize chemically patterned surfaces to achieve a desired pinning function or a pendant drop with desired properties.
Stimuli-responsive topological change of microstructured surfaces and the resultant variations of wetting properties

Abstract:It is now well established that topological microstructures play a key role in the physical properties of surfaces. Stimulus-induced variations of topological microstructure should therefore lead to a change in the physical properties of microstructured responsive surfaces. In this paper, we demonstrate that roughness changes alter the wetting properties of responsive organic surfaces. Oriented nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are used to construct the microstructured surfaces via a replica molding technique. The topological microstructure of the surfaces covered with micropillars changes with temperature, due to the reversible contraction of the LCE pillars along the long axis at the nematic-to-isotropic phase transition. This is directly observed for the first time under environmental scanning electron microscopy (E-SEM). A high boiling point liquid, glycerol, is used to continuously monitor the contact angle change with temperature. The glycerol contact angle of the microstructured surfaces covered with small pillars decreases from 118 at room temperature to 80 at 140 C, corresponding to a transition from Cassie state to Wenzel state. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Abstract:Inspired by the lotus leaf, scientists have developed many superhydrophobic surfaces, some of which show remarkable switching between hydrophobic and hydrophilic state under external stimuli. However, the switch usually relies on the change of chemical properties rather than on the modification of the topographic structure of the surface. In this paper, the roughness‐change‐related switchable wetting properties of microstructured responsive surfaces made of nematic liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) is reported. First, various carbonate LC monomers and side‐on LCEs are synthesized with low nematic‐to‐isotropic transition temperature, TNI. Then, LCEs prepared from 3″‐vinylcarbonyloxypropyl 2,5‐di(4′‐octyloxybenzoyloxy)benzoate monomer, with TNI of 76 °C and contraction of 34% are used to construct a surface covered with micropillar arrays by using a replica molding technique. The contraction of the micropillars induces a reversible roughness change of the microstructured surface. Water contact angle of this microstructured surface changed with temperature, indicating a successful approach at building a surface with switchable wetting properties.
Mussel-Inspired Modification of Honeycomb Structured Films for Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Tunable Water Adhesion

Abstract:In this paper, we report novel superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable water adhesion by combining mussel-inspired surface chemistry and bioinspired multiscale surface structures. Highly ordered honeycomb porous films were prepared from a diblock copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) by the breath figure method. Removing the top surface layer of the honeycomb films leads to pincushion-like surfaces. The films were coated with polydopamine after completely prewetting by ethanol, followed by the reaction with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol for fluorination. As a result of the surface modification, both the honeycomb and the pincushion-like surfaces are superhydrophobic with a water contact angle higher than 150 degrees. Interestingly, the former is highly adhesive, on which water droplets are pinned at any tilted angles, whereas the latter is relatively low adhesive. Calculations indicate that the honeycomb films are in the Cassie state, whereas the pincushion-like surfaces are in the metastable Cassie state. On the basis of these superhydrophobic surfaces with different adhesive properties, no-loss transportation of water droplets has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Designing intelligent superhydrophobic surfaces with versatile surface properties has garnered scholarly attention in field of heterogeneous catalysis, lab-on-chip, water harvesting, etc. However, the precise modulation of fluid adhesion on superhydrophobic surfaces, particularly when being applied as coatings, remains a challenge. Here we employ a "glue + powder" method for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable droplet adhesion by embedding microparticles with mixed shapes. By adjusting the mixing ratio of rod-like and spherical particles, the sliding angle of superhydrophobic coating can be facilely controlled as well as the underwater bubble holding ability. During the dewetting process, the difference in the contact line lengths between micro-rod and micro-sphere contributes to the varying droplet adhesive force from 43.7 μN to 109.4 μN, which corresponds to the rolling-off angle change of a 10 μL droplet from 9.6° to 45.7°. Furthermore, by mixing fumed silica with branched structure, the lowest range of the rolling-off angle adjustment can be extended down to 0.5°, showing a precise and universal strategy for tuning the surface adhesion. On the basis of the meticulous manipulation of surface adhesion, controlling processes of single droplet and droplets accumulation can be fulfilled, with implications for enhancing the functionality of current superhydrophobic materials. Taking the advantage of the convenient and reliable fabrication method, a series of demonstration including manual droplet holders, multi-tiered droplet capturing interface, droplet sieving platforms, and gravity-driven droplet reactors has been realized. We envision that the precise control of droplet adhesion on superhydrophobic materials should further provides substantial opportunities for innovating fluid manipulation systems possessing heightened operability and multifunctionality.

Abstract:Micro/nanostructured surfaces with designable wettability show great promise in many fields. This paper reports a new strategy for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable water adhesion force by combining multiscale surface structures and mussel-inspired surface chemistry, which can be used for multiple liquid manipulations. Highly ordered porous films prepared by the breath figure method enable convenient construction of surfaces with honeycomb-patterned or nanosized pincushion-like structures. Multiple liquid manipulations including no-loss transportation of water droplets, water collection, programmable movement of water droplets, and chemical reaction monitoring are demonstrated on the micro/nanostructured surfaces. The proposed method is facile, energy-efficient, and can be conducted for the preparation of superhydrophobic surfaces with high contrast adhesion patterns.

Abstract:This work reported the dynamic effects of water droplet impact on flat, porous and pincushion structure films of star shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) fluorinated acrylates, POSS-poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate)8 (POSS-(PTFEMA)8) and POSS-(poly(trifluoroethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate))8 (POSS-(PTFEMA-b-PMMA)8), using the breath figure method. The porous and pincushion structure films with different surface chemical compositions were obtained by controlling the copolymer structure and temperature and by stripping of the surface. The water contact angles on the different films were measured, and the water droplets on the pincushion structure films when reversed at 45°, 90°, 135° and 180° were also studied. It was found that the pincushion structure films revealed a water adhesion ability. Furthermore, the water droplet impact behavior on these films was investigated. The morphology variations of water droplets, spreading diameter of the droplets, energy conversion, restitution coefficient and adhesion force were examined. Finally, the schematic illustration of water droplets under the static and dynamic states in contact with the pincushion and porous structure surfaces was proposed. It is critical to materialize various applications such as microdroplet transportation, soil erosion, spray painting, anti-icing surface and antifouling agents for textiles.

Abstract:It is confirmed that surfaces with specific microstructures could exhibit good superhydrophobic properties, and there are also a lot of conclusions about droplet hysteresis behavior. However, most of the research methods are based on two-dimensional ideal model and experimental observation at the macroscale. Further research needs to be conducted about the hysteresis behavior of droplets on the microstructure surface under three-dimensional conditions. In this paper, the influence of curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) has been investigated. The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Analyses were conducted on the morphology change and force of the liquid surface between pillars, and an index was proposed to describe the degree of difficulty of liquid surface movement. It was revealed that a change in the direction of the surface tension at the three-phase interface caused by curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars played an important role in the movement of the liquid surface. The greater the surface tension component in the normal direction of the liquid surface, the more likely it was for the liquid surface to advance or recede. The local curvature of the liquid surface increased or the angles between the pillars increased, and the effect of the CAH would be weakened.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Controlled liquid adhesion behaviors on super-wetting surfaces have gained significant attention, however, precise controlling of adhesion behavior is extremely hard to realize due to some inherent limitation in surface chemistry or morphology. Herein, we report a silicone-oil-infused magnetic porous polydimethylsiloxane (SMPP) surface with magnetically tunable super-wetting behaviors. Benefiting from the magnetic-field-responsive structure and interconnected porous characteristics, the SMPP can use magnetic field to control the seepage and absorption of silicone oil in the micropore channels, thereby precisely changing the adhesion of the water droplets on the surface. Compared to conventional super-wetting surfaces, this SMPP surface displays reversible in-situ conversion from ultra-high to ultra-low droplet adhesion with sliding angles ranging from 3° to 180° that hold up well even after severe cutting or abrasion. We also demonstrated that this tunable adhesion behavior can be used not only to enhance droplet manipulation in spatiotemporal but also to design unique microfluidic microreactors and antigravity transport devices. We envision that this proof-in-concept surface can serve as an important component of integrated control systems for intelligent manipulators, biochemical reactions, fluid transport, and biomedical analysis.

Abstract:Using an air purifying system can remove indoor air pollutants, but because it increases electric power utilization, results in broader increases in air pollution. To explore the tradeoff between energy consumption and healthful air, we demonstrate the indoor air sensing and automation (IASA) system, an internet-of-things system. The IASA system uses an air quality sensor, gateway device, and smart thermostat to control the fan in a home’s heating and cooling system. When fine particulate matter is high, the system operates the fan to pull air through a furnace filter and remove the pollution from the indoor air. We describe our system design, deployment, and collected data. To date, we have collected 861,000 air quality measurements with IASA.

Abstract:A robust and transparent silica-like coating that imparts superhydrophobicity to a surface through its hierarchical multilevel self-assembled structure is demonstrated. This approach involves iterative steps of spin-coating, annealing, and etching of polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane block copolymer thin films to form a tailored multilayer nanoscale topographic pattern with a water contact angle up to 155°. A model based on the hierarchical topography is developed to calculate the wetting angle and optimize the superhydrophobicity, in agreement with the experimental trends, and explaining superhydrophobicity arising through the combination of roughness at different lengthscales. Additionally, the mechanical robustness and optically passive properties of the resulting hydrophobic surfaces are demonstrated.

Abstract:Hypothesis: The petal effect is a well-known natural phenomenon in surface science and has served as inspiration for the creation of several materials with superhydrophobic qualities and high adhesion. As surface roughness has a crucial role in these properties, being able to modulate it could help us design materials at will. Capillary penetration frustrates diffusion and promotes large contact angles as well as high adhesion. Experiments: Polystyrene surfaces were created using the spin-coating technique. By varying the polymer concentration, the surface roughness was modified. To determine the roughness parameters, atomic force microscopy was used. We recorded advancing and receding contact angles using water and glycerol as test liquids to study contact angle hysteresis, the work of adhesion and the apparent surface energy, which was determined with the Chibowski and Perea-Carpio method. For the purpose of elucidating the wetting states, captive bubble experiments were conducted. Findings: Using an easy method, we create polystyrene surfaces with both superhydrophobicity and strong adhesion, where the roughness area factor regulates wetting transitions from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel. The receding contact angle suggests capillary penetration, which we demonstrate by captive bubble experiments. In addition, a link was found between the surface roughness and apparent surface energy.

Abstract:Micro-electromechanical systems often fail due to adhesion or wear, and preparing a stable super-hydrophobic surface is an effective approach to solve this problem. In this paper, the microscale square texture and nailshaped texture were designed and fabricated, and the nanoscale N-[3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylenediamine- Lauroyl chloride (DA-LA) dual self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) was developed to form a micro/nano composite structure. Meanwhile, micro/nanoscale surface morphology, chemical composition and surface free energy were characterized or calculated. Further, wettability and stability experiments were carried out. The results showed that the micro/nano composite structure achieves super-hydrophobicity and enhanced stability, and the maximum contact angle reaches 170.35 degrees. The nail-DA-LA surface with a 54.7 degrees overhang angle and rough sidewalls exhibited prominent super-hydrophobic stability, and the tribological experiments showed that the adhesion/friction reduced by 46.71% and 52.26%.

Abstract:Preparation of mechanically durable superwetting surfaces is imperative, yet challenging for the wide range of real applications where high durability is required. Mechanical wear on superwetting surfaces usually degrades weak roughness, leading to loss of functions. In this study, wear-resistant superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces are prepared by anchoring reinforced coatings via adhesive-swelling and adhesive-bonding processes, respectively. The results of the sandpaper abrasion (grit no. 600, 24 kPa) show that superhydrophilic nylon/SiO2 coatings and superhydrophobic polyurethane/TiO2 coatings retain their functions after suffering the abrasion distances of 70 cm and more than 1000 cm, respectively. Reinforced coatings formed by consecutive roughness and improved adhesion between coatings and substrates are responsible for repeatedly generated superwettability after exposure to mechanical stresses and demonstrated to be feasible for designing wear-resistant superwetting surfaces. Furthermore, this novel architecture of "reinforced coating with consecutive roughness + high adhesion" may demand desired coating materials and reliable coating-fixing techniques for sustaining sufficient roughness and is superior to currently existing technologies in advancing wear-resistance of superwetting surfaces.

Abstract:A hierarchical structural surface of TiO2 film with reversibly light-switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity on metal substrate was fabricated through simply dip-coating method from TiO2 precursor solution containing TiO2 nanoparticles with the average diameter 25 nm (P25), followed by heat-treatment and modification with fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) molecules. The morphology, phase and crystallographic structure, and chemical composite of the as-prepared TiO2 film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The wettability of TiO2 film was characterized by a drop shape analyzer. The water contact angle of superhydrophobic TiO2 film was up to 165.6°. Under UV irradiation, the water contact angle decreased and the superhydrophobic TiO2 film became superhydrophilic because of hydroxyl groups absorption on the TiO2 surface. Meanwhile, the surface morphology of TiO2 film, which resulted from the TiO2 nanoparticles added in TiO2 precursor solution, had a significant effect on the wettability conversion of TiO2 film and enhanced the switch from hydrophobicity to hydrophilicity. The wettability could be reversibly switched between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity via alternation of UV exposure and dark storage.
Superhydrophobic surfaces created by a one-step solution-immersion process and their drag-reduction effect on water

Abstract:A simple one-step process was developed to fabricate a super-hydrophobic surface on copper alloy substrates, which was applied by immersing the sheets in a solution containing sodium hydroxide (NaOH), ammonium persulphate ((NH4)(2)S2O8) and fluoroalkyl-silane (FAS-17) molecules. The consequent surface was characterized by contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The water contact angle (CA) and sliding angle (SA) on the resulting surface were similar to 158 degrees and similar to 4 degrees, respectively. Here, the stability of the obtained surfaces was measured by a wearing test. The damaged coatings can be quickly repaired by a one-step solution-immersion process. Subsequently, the liquid/solid friction on the distinct wetting surface was studied by using a water spraying system. By comparing the friction on a normal surface and the as-prepared surface at different flow velocities, we found that superhydrophobic coatings exhibited an excellent drag reduction of similar to 40% at a lowwall shear rate and similar to 20% at highwall shear rate. Based on these results, we attribute the superhydrophobic drag-reducing results to the plastron effect, which is characterized by surface wetting and roughness. This study not only presented a simple one-step method to fabricate a superhydrophobic surface on the copper alloy substrates but also showed the drag-reducing effect on the obtained surfaces for engineering applications.
