Abstract:An investigation on bioaerosol in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in Xi'an, China, was conducted to understand the characteristics of bioaerosol released from wastewater and sludge treatment facilities because the bioaerosols may pose a threat to human health. Using the Andersen impactor sampler collection and colony-counting method, bioaerosol concentrations and size distributions were detected. The risk quotient method was used to evaluate the health risks associated with inhalation of bioaerosol for WWTP staff, based on the average daily dose rates of exposure. The health risk in relation to Legionella pneumophila was quantitatively calculated using quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), based on the assumption of the percentage. The maximum concentration of airborne bacteria (3,767 ± 280 colony forming units (CFU)/m3) and fungi (8,775 ± 406 CFU/m3) occurred from the aerated grit chamber and sludge thickening house, respectively, which all exceeded 500 CFU/m3 as the acceptable guideline proposed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The particle size of airborne bacteria was mainly distributed in the first three stages (>3.3 µm), while that of airborne fungi was from the second to the fourth stage (2.1-7.0 µm). The hazard index exposure to bioaerosol for adult males and females by inhalation were higher than 1. The proportion of L. pneumophila should be strictly controlled below 10-8, based on the QMRA approach.

Abstract:Bioaerosols can be generated in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), they may contain pathogenic bacteria, cause disease transmission, and attract the public's attention. In this study, bioaerosols were collected from seven different stages of an A²O process WWTP. The component characteristics were analyzed by bacterial culture and high-throughput sequencing. The correlations in different processes were analyzed, and the health risks of bioaerosols produced were evaluated. The results showed that the concentration range of bacteria aerosol in the WWTP was 75 CFU/m³-706 CFU/m³. The concentration range of total suspended particles was 111.13 µg/m³-211.67 µg/m³, the primary water-soluble ions were Ca²⁺ and Cl⁻. In the air of each stage, the main bacteria were Cetobacterium, Bacteroides, Romboutsia, and the fungi were Fusarium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus. The dominant bacteria in the wastewater were Cetobacterium, Romboutsia, Stenotrophobacter, and the fungi were Fusarium, Aspergillus, and Mortierella. The total bacterial concentration and ion concentration in the aerobic section of the biochemical tank were the highest. The results of species composition and principal component analysis showed that the bacterial composition in the air at different processes was similar, while the bacteria in wastewater differed significantly. Among them, the wastewater bacteria in the aerobic section of the biochemical tank were closer to that in the air. Fungal results were similar to bacteria but not prominent. The bioaerosol exposure risk results show that the risk in each stage was acceptable (5.15 ×10⁻⁴-6.47 ×10⁻³). However, the exposure risk of bioaerosol was calculated by the total bacterial concentration. In fact, some pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and Aspergillus flavus were detected in bioaerosols, which may cause hemorrhagic colitis, cancer and other diseases by swallowing and inhalation. Therefore, the risk might be underestimated and should be a cause of concern.

Abstract:Bioaerosol is a new type of pollutant, which is related to the spread of many diseases. In particular, the bioaerosol produced in the hospital sewage treatment process contains many pathogenic bacteria, which will impact patients and surrounding residents. In this study, the biochemical tank (BRT) of the hospital sewage treatment station (HSTS) and municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) were used as sampling points. The results showed that the concentration of bacteria (1843 CFU/m3) in bioaerosol produced by BRT of HSTS was higher than that in the air at BRT of MWTP (1278 CFU/m3). The proportion of small-size bacteria (<3.3 μm) in the air of HSTS and MWTP was similar. However, the abundance of small-size pathogenic bacteria in HSTS was higher than that in MWTP, such as Acinetobacter and Arcobacter. The dominant bacteria in HSTS and MWTP were different under different particle sizes. The dominant bacterial genera of bioaerosol in HSTS under different particle sizes were similar (Acinetobacter, Arcobacter, Comamonas); There were significant differences in the dominant bacterial genera of bioaerosol in MWTP under different particle sizes. The dominant strains with particle sizes ranging from 0 ∼ 0.43 μm were Acinetobacter (23.22%). Kocuria (15.13%) accounted for a relatively high proportion in the aerosol of 0.43 μm ∼ 0.65 μm. The dominant strains with particle sizes of 0.65 μm ∼ 1.1 μm and 1.1 μm ∼ 2.1 μm were relatively single, and Exiguobacterium and Paenibacillus accounted for 51.51% and 60.15%, respectively. Source tracker showed that most of the pathogenic bacteria in bioaerosols came from sewage. One hour later, the concentration of particulate matter in the place 200 m away from BRT of HSTS (1 × 10−10 mg/m3) was higher than that in MWTP (1 × 10−11 mg/m3). The hazard quotient (HQ) of people around HSTS (HQmale: 1.70 × 10−1; HQfemale: 1.36 × 10−1) was higher than that of MWTP (HQmale: 1.18 × 10−1; HQfemale: 9.40 × 10−2). Pathogenic bacteria (Acinetobacter, Arcobacter) were detected in HSTS and MWTP and the BugBase phenotype prediction results showed potential pathogenicity. More attention should be paid to the protection of the people. It is suggested to strengthen the air sterilization treatment near HSTS according to the diffusion trajectory of bioaerosol, and the surrounding personnel should wear N95 and other protective masks.

Abstract:The inlet of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) contains pathogenic microorganisms which during aeration and by mechanical mixing through wind typically aerosolized microbes into ambient air. Bioaerosol emission and its characterization (bacterial and fungal) was investigated considering low-flow and high-flow inlet of wastewater treatment plant. Generation of bioaerosols was found influenced by prevailing seasons while both during summer and winter, fungal concentration (winter: 1406 ± 517; summer: 1743 ± 271 CFU/m3) was higher compared to bacterial concentration (winter: 1077 ± 460; summer: 1415 ± 588 CFU/m3). Bioaerosols produced from WWTPs were predominately in the size range of 2.1-4.7 μm while fraction of fungal bioaerosols were also in ultra-fine range (0.65 μm). Bioaerosols reaching to the air from WWTPs varied seasonally and was calculated by aerosolization ratio. During summer, aerosolization of the bioaerosols was nearly 6 times higher than winter. To constitute potential health effects from the exposure to these bioaerosols, biological characterization, antibiotics resistance and the health survey of the nearby area were also performed. The biological characterization of the bioaerosols samples were done through metagenomic approach using 16s and ITS metagenomic sequencing. Presence of 167 genus of bacteria and 41 genus of fungi has been found. Out of this, bacillus (73%), curtobacterium (21%), pseudomonas, Exiguo bacterium, Acinetobacter bacillaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Prevotella were the dominant genus (top 10) of bacteria. In case of fungi, xylariales (49%), Hypocreales (19%), Coperinopsis (9%), Alternaria (8%), Fusarium (6%), Biopolaris, Epicoccum, Pleosporaceae, Cladosporium and Nectriaceae were dominant. Antibiotics like, Azithromycin and cefixime were tested on the most dominant bacillus showed resistance on higher concentration of cefixime and lower concentration of azithromycin. Population-based health survey in WWTP nearby areas (50-150 m periphery) found several types of diseases/symptoms including respiratory problem, skin rash/irritation, change in smell and taste, eye irritation within the resident population and workers.
Bioaerosols emission and exposure risk of a wastewater treatment plant with A2O treatment process

Abstract:The characteristics of bioaerosol emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have attracted extensive attention. The anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) process, which uses the activated sludge approach to wastewater treatment, is the most widely used process in WWTPs. Concentration, size distribution, population, and exposure risk from bacteria and fungi in bioaerosols of WWTPs using the A2O process were studied in this work. The results showed that the maximum concentration of airborne bacteria (1.00 × 104 Colony Forming Units per cubic meter (CFU m-3)) and fungi (1.44 ×104 CFU m-3) occurred from the facility's aerobic tank, in summer. As one of the main factors affecting bioaerosol exposure risk, particle size distribution was related to season. The study found that particles larger than 3.3 µm in diameter were detected mainly in spring and summer, while particles less than 3.3 µm were detected mainly in autumn and winter, whether bacterial aerosol or fungal aerosol. In addition, pathogenic bacteria were observed in bioaerosols from WWTPs, with 18 of the 65 species of bacteria detected found to be potentially or opportunistically pathogenic, such as Chryseobacterium, Stenotrophomonas, Alcaligenes, Micrococcus, Pantoea, Enterobacter and Escherichia-Shigella. The presence of these pathogens further increased the exposure risk from bioaerosols. The results of an inhalation risk assessment for airborne bacteria and fungi indicated that potential adverse health risks for adults mainly occurred in spring, summer, and autumn. On this basis, it was concluded that WWTP operators should set up effective bioaerosol controls as soon as possible to protect the health of workers, and of residents near the plant.

Abstract:Bioaerosols generated from sludge treatment processes in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may spread infectious diseases. This study investigated the generation characteristics, source, and associated risks of bioaerosols produced during sludge treatment processes. The results showed that the concentration range of total suspended particles was 49 ± 3 to 354 ± 10 μg/m 3 , and the primary water-soluble ions in bioaerosols were NH 4 + , SO 4 2− and Cl − . The bacterial concentration in bioaerosols was 50 ± 5 to 1296 ± 261 CFU/m 3 , with the highest concentration in the biochemical reaction tank. The dominant bacteria in bioaerosols included Bacteroides, Cetobacterium, Romboutsia, Lactobacillus and Turicibacter , while the dominant fungi were Aspergillus , Alternaria , Cladosporium and Fusarium . Pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia and Aspergillus were detected in all treatment processes. The results of principal component analysis showed that the bacterial composition in bioaerosols was similar of different technological processes, while the fungal species composition was different. The dominant microbial composition of sludge and bioaerosols was relatively close. The Source Tracker results indicated that sludge was the main source of airborne bacteria in the sludge dewatering house, as well as the main source of airborne fungi in the plate-frame pressure filtration tank and the sloping plate sedimentation tank. The non-carcinogenic risk in each stage was low (1.22 × 10 −9 –3.99 × 10 −2 ). However, Bugbase phenotype prediction results showed that the bioaerosols in the anaerobic sedimentation tank may have potential pathogenicity. Therefore, the management and control of bioaerosols from the sludge treatment should be strengthened.

Abstract:Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have become one of the most promising technologies in wastewater treatment. This study aimed to investigate the emission characteristics, source analysis and health risk of bioaerosols generated from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with an MBR throughout the entire process. The results suggested that the MBR exhibited a high concentration of bacterial bioaerosols (2921-6173 CFU/m3) and fungal bioaerosols (170-230 CFU/m3) and a high proportion of the respiratory fraction (RF) of bioaerosols. In the MBR, Halomonas, Microvirga, and Geodermatophilus were the dominant bacteria, and the predominant fungi were Acidea, Neophaeosphaeria, and Cryptotrichosporon. Water soluble ions (WSIs) in the bioaerosols were mainly SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, Ca2+, Na+ and NH4+, with concentrations ranging from 18.68-183.41Â Î¼g/m3. Temperature, relative humidity (RH) and wind speed (WS) all had different influences on bacterial bioaerosols and fungal bioaerosols. Ambient air was the major source of bioaerosols from the MBR. Bioaerosols in the fine grid (FG) and sludge dewatering room (SDR) were from wastewater, sludge and ambient air. Furthermore, inhalation was the greatest pathway of bioaerosol exposure. The SDR, aeration tank (AerT) and MBR showed the highest risks of bioaerosols. Abstract:Sampling sites were located in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with a sequencing batch reactor activated sludge process to investigate the characteristics of bioaerosol emissions. The results indicated that bioaerosols were detected from each treatment section of the WWTP, and concentrations of bioaerosols were in the range of 82-1525 CFU·m-3. The coarse screen, aeration tank, and sludge dewatering house were the main sources of bioaerosols. The dominant species in each treatment section was Cyanobacteria, and the other main bacterial taxa were Aeromonas, Peptostreptococcaceae, Moraxellaceae, Chroococcidiopsis, Sphingomonas, Arcobacter, and Acinetobacter. Among the identified bacterial genera, Aeromonas, Arcobacter, Acinetobacter, and Sphingomonas were potential pathogens. Bioaerosol concentration and abundance decreased along the vertical and horizontal directions. Appropriate temperature and relative humidity benefited the survival of bioaerosols in the air (P<0.01), whereas a negative relationship between bioaerosol concentration and wind speed was observed (P<0.05). Although exposure risks caused by bioaerosols were negligible in this study, the accumulation of bioaerosols would increase potential health risks. The bioreactor for odor treatment could effectively reduce bioaerosol emissions.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the leading sources of potential pathogenic bioaerosol that cause non-negligible health risks. However, bioaerosolization behaviour of potential pathogenic microorganisms (PPMs) migrating from wastewater to the atmosphere is still unclear. This study investigated the occurrence profile of PPMs in wastewater, sludge and bioaerosol, then analyzed bioaerosolization level, impact factors and social function. Staphylococcus aureus was selected as the target due to its pathogenicity, and the health risks of workers, engineers and researchers wearing various masks (N90, N95 and medical masks) were evaluated. The results showed that there were 38 and 64 PPMs in bioaerosol from plant A and B. Streptomyces in plant A (average bioaerosolization index, BI= 237.71) and Acinetobacter in plant B (average BI = 505.88) were more likely to migrate from wastewater to the atmosphere forming bioaerosol. Environmental factors (relative humidity, wind speed and temperature) affected both BI and microbial species of PPMs in different ways. PPMs related to fermentation, aerobic chemoheterotrophy, and chemoheterotrophy are the most abundant. Meanwhile microbial networks from plants A and B showed that PPMs were well-connected. Emission level of Staphylococcus aureus bioaerosol can reach 980 ± 309.19 CFU/m 3 in plant A and 715.55 ± 44.17 CFU/m 3 in plant B. For three exposure population, disease burden (DB) and annual probability infection (Py) of Staphylococcus aureus bioaerosol in two plants were both higher than the U.S.EPA benchmark (10 −4 DALYs pppy). All three masks (N90,N95 and medical masks) can decrease Py and DB by at least one order of magnitude. This study illustrated the bioaerosolization behaviour of PPMs comprehensively, which provides a scientific basis for exposure risk prevention and control.

Abstract:Bioaerosols containing pathogens released from waste and wastewater treatment facilities pose potential health risks to workers on-site and residents downwind. In this study, sampling sites were set up at rural garbage stations (GS-1 and GS-2) and sewage treatment station (STS) to investigate the emission and diffusion characteristics of bioaerosols. High-throughput sequencing was utilized to assay the intestinal bacteria population, while the health risks associated with bioaerosols exposure were estimated based on average daily dose rates (DD). Traceability analysis was used to determine the percentages of intestinal bacteria from GS-1, GS-2 and STS. The recorded emission levels of bioaerosols in the air surrounding GS-1, GS-2, and STS were 5053, 6299, and 4795 CFU/m3, containing 1599, 2244, and 2233 CFU/m3 of intestinal bacteria, respectively. Most of the bioaerosols were coarse particles with size larger than 4.7 μm. Methylobacterium, Rhizobium, Pseudomonas, Enterobacteriaceae, and Brucella presented in the air were originally in rural waste and wastewater. STS and GS-2 were potential sources of intestinal bacteria. With increasing distance from the sources, the concentration of bioaerosols decreased gradually. On-site workers and residents were predominantly affected by bioaerosols through inhalation. The exposure risks via inhalation and skin contact for children were much higher than that for adults. The purpose of this study was to provide preliminary data for bioaerosols control and their risks reduction released from rural sanitation facilities.

Abstract:The hospital sewage contains many pathogenic bacteria, which may produce bioaerosol and spread diseases during the sewage treatment process. In this study, the characteristics, seasonal variation, and risk assessment of the bioaerosol in hospital sewage treatment stations (HSTS) were analyzed. The concentration of bacteria in bioaerosol generated from BRT (251 CFU/m 3 ) was higher than that in the air at SG (75 CFU/m 3 ). Summer (506 CFU/m 3 ) and autumn (32 CFU/m 3 ) showed the highest levels of bacterial and intestinal bacterial concentration in the air at BRT, respectively. The percentage of microorganisms attached to small particles (<2.1 μm) (SP) ranged from 22.64% to 66.66%, which was most prevalent in winter (66.66%). Brevundimonas (38.99%), Bacteroides (11.25%), Pseudomonas (49.48%), and Ochrobactrum (41.02%) were the dominant genera in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The dominant bacterial genera of bioaerosol in BRT and SG showed obvious seasonal variations, Bacillus were present in each season. The hazard quotient (HQ) of males was higher than that of females (HQ males : 2.60 × 10 −3 , HQ females : 2.18 × 10 −3 ), and the inhalation risks of the bacteria were highest in summer (5.98 × 10 −2 ). Temperature and relative humidity positively influenced intestinal bacteria in bioaerosols. The potentially pathogenic were highest in spring. One hour after the sampling point, the result of the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) mode showed that the diffusion area of bioaerosol in winter (182.03 km 2 ) was the largest. This study focused on the bioaerosol produced by hospital sewage. The results effectively revealed the seasonal variation and risk characteristics of bioaerosols, which could serve as a theoretical foundation for the future control and reduction of bioaerosols in the process of purifying municipal water.

Abstract:Aeration tanks from activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can release a large amount of bioaerosols that can pose health risks. However, risk characterization of bioaerosols emissions form wastewater treatment plants is currently not systematically carried out and still in its infancy. Therefore, this study investigated emission characteristic of two indicator model bioaerosols Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, emitted from aeration tanks of a municipal WWTP. Monte Carlo simulation was then used to quantitatively assess microbial risk posed by different aeration modes under optimistic and conservative estimates. Further to this, two different exposure scenarios were considered during 3 days sampling campaign in autumn and winter. Results showed that the bioaerosol concentration from microporous aeration tank (20–262 CFU m−3) was one order of magnitude lower than rotating disc aeration tank. Average aerosolization rate was 7.5 times higher with mechanical aeration mode. Health risks of exposed populations were 0.4 and 9.6 times higher in winter than in autumn for E. coli and S. aureus bioaerosol, respectively. Health risks of staff members were 10 times higher than academic visitors. Interesting results were observed for academic visitors without personal protective equipment (PPE) respectively exposed to S. aureus and E. coli bioaerosol in autumn and winter: while the derived infection risk met the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) benchmark under optimistic estimation, the disease risk burden was over the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark under conservative estimation. These revealed that only satisfying one of the two benchmarks didn't mean absolute acceptable health risk. This study could facilitate the development of better understanding of bioaerosol quantitative assessment of risk characterizations and corresponding appropriate risk control strategies for wastewater utilities.

Abstract:Airborne pathogens constitute a growing threat to global public health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are important sources of airborne bacteria, which pose great health risks to the employee and nearby residents. In this study, the distribution, transmission and health risk of the airborne culturable and inhalable bacteria carried by PM 2.5 in a semiunderground WWTP were evaluated. The concentrations of culturable bacteria in the air were 21.2–1431.1 CFU/m 3 , with the main contributions of primary and biological treatments. The relative abundances of culturable and total inhalable bacterial taxa were positively correlated ( p < 0.05). However, certain bacteria, including Bacillus , Acinetobacter and Enterococcus , exhibited high reproductive capacity despite their low concentration in the air, suggesting that they can survive and regrow in suitable environments. Transmission modeling revealed that the concentrations of airborne bacteria exponentially decreased with distance from 18.67 to 24.12 copies /m 3 at the source to 0.06–0.14 copies /m 3 at 1000 m downwind. The risks of 8-h exposure in this WWTP except the outlet exceeded the reference value recommended by WHO, which were primarily dependent on P. aeruginosa , Salmonella , and E. coli . Management practices should consider improved controls for bioaerosols in order to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Abstract:Gaseous emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal plants pose serious odor pollution and health risks. In this study, the emission of volatile organic compounds and carbon disulfide was compared in the main processing units of three disposal methods, i.e., landfilling, eco-mechanical biological treatment (EMBT) and anaerobic fermentation in a MSW disposal plant. Among the detected volatile compounds (VCs), the top ten odor compounds were methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, carbon disulfide, styrene, m-xylene, 4-ethyltoluene, ethylbenzene, 2-hexyl ketone and n-hexane in the MSW disposal plant. Sulfur compounds were the main source of odor at the majority of sampling sites, and aromatic compounds were the dominant odor substrates at the tipping unit and sorting system of EMBT, while 2-hexanone was the major odor substrate at the tipping unit (AT) and sorting system (AS) of anaerobic fermentation and the landfill working surface. At AS and AT, the lifetime cancer risk values for 1,2-dichloroethane and trichloroethylene exceeded the carcinogenic risk value (>1.0E-04), and the hazard index values of naphthalene, trichloroethylene and acrolein all exceeded the acceptable level (>1). Therefore, special attention should be paid to VC emissions from MSW disposal facilities, and protection measures should be adopted for on-site workers to minimize health risks.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in public health because it can emit a large quantity of bioaerosols. Exposure to bioaerosols from WWTPs is a potential health risk to WWTP workers and surrounding residents. In this study, the seasonal fluctuation of aerosolization ratios of several bioaerosols and quantitative health risks of the WWTP workers and the surrounding residents exposed to total coliform, fecal coliform, and enterococcal bioaerosols were analyzed. Results showed that the aerosolization ratio of airborne bacteria was higher in the cold seasons and lower in the warm seasons, whereas the aerosolization ratio of airborne fungi was the highest in summer. The aerosolization ratio of airborne fungi was evidently higher than that of other bioaerosols. Moreover, the aerosolization ratio under the inverted umbrella aerator mode was generally higher than that under the microporous aerator mode. For each exposure scenario, the health risks of males were generally 7.2–26.7% higher than those of females. The health risks of the exposure population exposed to total coliform and enterococcal bioaerosols were generally higher in warm seasons, whereas those of the population exposed to fecal coliform bioaerosol were the highest in winter. Additionally, the health risks of exposure population without masks under the imprudent/conservative estimate all exceeded the benchmarks. However, when equipped with masks, all the exposure populations' health risks decreased 1–2 orders of magnitude and approached acceptable levels. This research methodically provides new scientific data on the aerosolization ratio of microorganism bioaerosols in a WWTP and promotes the comprehension of their quantitative health risks under imprudent/conservative estimates.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main source of bioaerosol emissions. The cover of deodorization within WWTPs serves not only to manage odors but also to limit the dispersion of bioaerosols. This study investigated the emission characteristics and exposure risks of bioaerosols inside deodorization covers from a WWTP in Northern China. The results revealed that the concentration of bacteria in bioaerosols ranged from 96 ± 8 to 706 ± 45 CFU/m 3 , with the highest concentration observed in the biochemical reaction tank. The predominant bacterial genera in bioaerosols within the odor control covers were Cetobacterium , Romboutsia , Bacteroides , Lactobacillus , and Tubricibacter , while the dominant fungal genera included Aspergillus , Alternaria , Fusarium , and Cladosporium . The main water-soluble ions in the air were NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , SO 4 2− , and Cl − . SO 4 2− was found to promote the survival of Cetobacterium, Brevibacterium, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Filobasidium , while Cl − exhibited inhibitory effects on most microorganisms in bioaerosols. Source tracker analysis indicated that wastewater was the primary source of bioaerosols in the biochemical reaction tank. The non-carcinogenic risk associated with bioaerosols within deodorization covers was less than 1 (2.34 × 10 −9 to 3.08 × 10 −2 ). FunGuild fungal functional prediction suggested that the abundance of animal pathogens was highest in the bioaerosols from the anaerobic sedimentation tank. BugBase phenotypic prediction showed that the abundance of potential pathogens in secondary sedimentation tank bioaerosols was the highest. This study effectively revealed the characteristics and sources of bioaerosols in the sewage and sludge treatment area under the deodorization cover, which provided a theoretical basis for enhancing the management and control of bioaerosols.

Abstract:Sewage in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can produce fugitive bioaerosols that pose a health risk to employees and residents. This study aimed to fugitive bioaerosols from two WWTPs with anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) processes, and bioaerosols control measures were proposed based on the results of these studies. It was found that the bioaerosols were mainly composed of microorganisms from dominant genera such as Romboutsia, Rubellimicrobium, Sphingomonas, Acidea, Cryptotrichosporon and water-soluble ions dominated by SO 4 2− . Moreover, total suspended particulate (TSP), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS), Ca 2+ , NH 4 + , Na + , Cl − , NO 3 − , and K + had positive effects on most dominant genera, while temperature (T) and SO 4 2− had negative effects on most dominant genera. The source analysis showed that the bioaerosols in the indoor treatment facility's fine screen room and sludge dewatering plant mainly originated from sewage or sludge, and those in the aeration tank of the outdoor treatment facility mainly originated from the background air of WWTPs . By combining the characteristics of bioaerosols and the results of source analysis, targeted control measures were proposed from three aspects: source reduction of bioaerosol fugitives, control of bioaerosol propagation, and collection and treatment systems. This study provides the theoretical basis and ideas for controlling bioaerosols in WWTPs with AAO processes.

Abstract:Sewage treatment processes are a critical anthropogenic source of bioaerosols and may present significant health risks to plant workers. Compared with the specialization and scale of urban sewage treatment, many decentralized treatment models are flexible and extensive. These treatment facilities are usually close to residential areas owing to the pipe network layout and other restrictions. Bioaerosols generated by these facilities may present a serious and widespread occupational and non-occupational exposure risk to nearby residents, particularly the elderly and children. An understanding of the characteristics and exposure risks of bioaerosols produced during decentralized sewage treatment is lacking. We compared bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential exposure risks under four decentralized sewage discharge methods and treatment models: small container collection (SCC), open-channel discharge (OCD), single household/combined treatment (SHCT), and centralized treatment (CT) in northwest China. The OCD mode had the highest bioaerosol production, whereas the CT mode had the lowest. The OCD model contained the most pathogenic bacterial species, up to 43 species, including Sphingomonas, Pseudomonas, Cladosporium, and Alternaria . Risk assessments indicated bioaerosol exposure was lower in the models with sewage treatment (SHCT and CT) than in those without (SCC and OCD). Different populations exhibited large variations in potential risks owing to differences in time spent indoors and outdoors. The highest risk was observed in males exposed to the SCC model. This study provides a theoretical basis and theories for the future joint prevention and control of the bioaerosol exposure risk from decentralized sewage treatment.

Abstract:Rapid population growth and urbanization process have led to increasing demand for wastewater treatment capacity resulting in a non-negligible increase of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in several cities around the world. Bioaerosol emissions from WWTPs may pose adverse health risks to the sewage workers and nearby residents, which raises increasing public health concerns. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps on the interplay between process-based bioaerosol characteristics and exposures and the quantification of health risk which limit our ability to design effective risk assessment and management strategies. This review provides a critical overview of the existing knowledge of bioaerosol emissions from WWTPs including their nature, magnitude and size distribution, and highlights the shortcoming associated with existing sampling and analysis methods. The recent advancements made for rapid detection of bioaerosols are then discussed, especially the emerging real time detection methods to highlight the directions for future research needs to advance the knowledge on bioaerosol emissions from WWTPs.
