Abstract:Genotype × environment interaction (GEI) poses a critical challenge to plant breeders by complicating the identification of stable variety (ies) for performance across diverse environments. GGE biplot and AMMI analyses have been identified as the most effective and appropriate statistical techniques for identifying stable and high-performing genotypes across diverse environments. The objective of this study was to identify widely adapted and high-yielding soybean genotypes from Multi-Locational Trials (MLTs) using GGE and AMMI biplot analyses. Fifteen IITA-bred elite soybean lines and three standard checks were evaluated for stability of performance in a 3 × 6 alpha lattice design with three replications across seven locations in Nigeria. Significant (p < 0.001) differences were detected among genotypes, environments, and GEI for grain yield, which ranged between 979.8 kg ha-1 and 3645 kg ha-1 with a mean of 2324 kg ha-1. To assess the stability of genotypes, analyses were conducted using the general linear method, GGE, and the Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) approach, as well as WAAS and ASV rank indices. In the GGE biplot model, the first two principal components accounted for 67.4 % of the total variation, while in the AMMI model, the first two Interaction Principal Component Axes (IPCA1 and IPCA2) explained 73.20 % and 11.40 % of the variation attributed to genotype by environment interaction, respectively. GGE biplot identified G10 and G16 as the most stable and productive genotypes, while WAASB index revealed G16, G10, G9, G4 and G2 as the most adaptive, stable and productive genotypes across locations, and ASV identified G9, G13, G4, G14 and G10 as the most stable and productive. Consequently, genotypes G2, G4, G9, G10 and G16 displayed outstanding and stable grain yield performance across the test locations and are, therefore, recommended for release as new soybean varieties suitable for cultivation in the respective mega environment where they performed best. More importantly, the two genotypes are recommended for recycling as sources of high-yield and yield stability genes, and as parental lines for high-yield and stable performance for future breeding and genomic selection.

Abstract:In rainfed areas, due to variable environmental factors, improving the yield stability of the introduced cultivars along with increasing yield should be considered. The main aim of this study is to obtain high-yield wheat genotypes that are stable and adaptable to cold climatic conditions in Iran. For this purpose, 25 wheat genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete blocks design with three replications during three cropping seasons (2013-2016) under supplementary irrigation and rainfed conditions. PBSTAT-GE software was used for genotype × environment interaction (GEI) analysis and comprehensive sustainability analysis. The results showed that G5, G14, G16 and G18 genotypes had good stability and general adaptation based on parametric and non-parametric stability statistics. Combined analysis of variance based on the Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model showed that GEI is significant in the term of grain yield. Also, the ratios between the sum of squares G, GE and IPC1 showed that the AMMI is suitable for data analysis. GGE biplot analysis identified five mega-environments (MEs), in which ME I including E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, and G7, G5, G14, G13, G16, G18, G20 being the superior ME I genotypes. According to AMMI and GGE biplote stability methods, lines G20, G18, G13, G16, G14 and Saein cultivar (G5) can be considered as desirable genetic resources in wheat production programs under variable environments in Iran, due to having the appropriate combination of yield and stability.

Analysis of genotype-by-environment interaction effect in barely genotypes using AMMI and GGE biplot methods

Abstract:Genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) analysis play a key role in any breeding program involving the development of new varieties for cultivation across various environments or in a specific region. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) method and the GGE biplot are the two main statistical tools that have emerged to analyze GEI in multi-environment trials (METs). The main goal of the present study was to identify the best-performing and stable barley genotypes for the warm regions of Iran. For this purpose, 18 new advanced barley genotypes were investigated in five warm locations in Iran during two cropping seasons (2021-2023). In all experiments, test genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Based on results, grain yield was significantly dependent on environments (E), genotypes (G), and GEI. The GEI effect was further divided into three principal component axes (IPCAs). The AMMI method identified genotypes G3, G9, G10, and G14 as ideal genotypes due to their low IPCA scores and high performances. In the GGE biplot analysis, the initial two PCAs accounted for 49.36 % of the total variation of grain yield, including both G and GEI effects. Based on averaged two-year data, genotypes G3, G4, G10, and G14 showed particular adaptability in the Zabol and Moghan regions. Moreover, the ranking of test environments showed good discriminatory and representative abilities for the Zabol and Moghan regions, so these environments constituted a mega-environment in Iran's warm climate. The genotype ranking indicated G3, G10 and G14 genotypes as the superior genotypes with the highest grain yield and stability in different test environments. Moreover, these results were confirmed by the results obtained by WAASB and WAASBY biplots. In conclusion, genotypes G3, G10 and G14 can be suggested for commercial usage and cultivation in various regions in Iran's warm climate.

Abstract:The investigation of rice varieties stability for amylose content (AC), gelatinization temperature (GT) and protein content (PC) was carried out using additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model in three locations and two years. Eighteen tested varieties were further clustered and evaluated based on the phenotypic values of three quality traits and their Di values from the AMMI analysis. The results showed that the genotype by environment interactions, the differences of phenotype and stability of AC, GT and PC among different genotypes and environments were all significant at 1% level. Also, only one variety, W002, had high stability for all the three quality traits. Additionally, in consideration with the phenotype of AC, GT and PC, and their stability in rice varieties, etc., four rice varieties, W002, Zaofeng 9,Guangling Xiangjing and Nanjing16, could be also applied as breeding parents to improve eating quality and stability of rice.

Abstract:The introduction of superior grain corn genotypes with high and stable yield (YLD) in most environments is important to increase local production and reduce dependency on imported grain corn. In this study, days to tasseling (DT), plant height, and YLD of 11 grain corn genotypes were observed in 10 environments to evaluate the effects of genotype (G), environment (E), and genotype by environment interactions (GEI) using GGE analysis and the stability of genotypes using stability parameters. In each location, grain corn genotypes were arranged in three replications using a randomized complete block design. An analysis of variance showed that all three traits were highly significant toward G and E factors, whereas GEI showed that only DT and YLD were highly significant. Genotype V14 produced the highest YLD of 10,354 kg/ha, followed by V4 (10,114 kg/ha) and V2 (9797.74 kg/ha). These three genotypes also dominated in seven out of 10 tested environments. With regard to stability ranking, genotype V4 was the most stable genotype, with a big gap difference between the second (V14) and third places (V2). Therefore, V14, V4, and V2 were the most promising genotypes because of their great YLD performance and most stable across tested environments, which can be recommended to farmers for high-scale planting.

Abstract:The soybean yield is a complex quantitative trait that is significantly influenced by environmental factors. G × E interaction (GEI), which derives the performance of soybean genotypes differentially in various environmental conditions, is one of the main obstacles to increasing the net production. The primary goal of this study is to identify the outperforming genotypes in different latitudes, which can then be used in future breeding programs. A total of 96 soybean genotypes were examined in two different ecological regions: Faisalabad and Tando Jam in Pakistan. The evaluation of genotypes in different environmental conditions showed a substantial amount of genetic diversity for grain yield. We identified 13 environment-specific genotypes showing their maximum grain yield in each environment. Genotype G69 was found to be an ideal genotype with higher grain yield than other genotypes tested in this study and is broadly adapted for environments E1 and E2 and also included in top-yielding genotypes in E3, E4, and E5. G92 is another genotype that is broadly adapted in E1, E3, and E4. In the case of environments, E3 is suggested to be a more ideal environment as it is plotted near the concentric circle and is very informative for the selection of genotypes with high yield. Despite the presence of GEI, advances in DNA technology provided very useful tools to investigate the insight of advanced genotypes. Association mapping is a useful method for swiftly and efficiently investigating the genetic basis of significant plant traits. A total of 26 marker–trait associations were found for six agronomic traits in five environments, with the highest significance ( p -value = 2.48 × 10 –08 ) for plant height and the lowest significance (1.03 × 10 –03 ) for hundred-grain weight. Soybean genotypes identified in the present study could be a valuable source for future breeding programs as they are adaptable to a wide range of environments. Genetic selection of genotypes with the best yields can be used for gross grain production in a wide range of climatic conditions, and it would give an essential reference in terms of soybean variety selection.

Abstract:Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is the predominant rainfed Indian oilseed crop cultivated across diverse agro-climatic zones. Understanding the genotype ? environment interaction (GEI) is crucial for development of stable and wider adaptable soybean varieties. In the current study, 10 elite breeding lines were evaluated across 19 diverse locations for days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, hundred seed weight and grain yield during 2020. The stability index as measured through weighted average of absolute scores (WAASB) identified SL 1213 and DS 1320 to have stable grain yield. WAASBY superiority index, which is based on mean performance and stability, was also higher for SL 1213. Multitrait stability index (MTSI) was employed to select genotypes with higher grain yield, early flowering, early maturity, higher hundred seed weight and plant height, simultaneously and genotypes DS 1320 and SL 1213 were identified through MTSI. Based on the three indices, SL 1213 was found to be the candidate genotype for breeding for higher yield, wider adaptability and for ideotype breeding. Based on cluster analysis, SL 1213 ? JS 22-07 and SL 1213 ? NRC 149 were found to be the ideal cross combinations for developing high-yielding and wider adaptable genotypes. Through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), grain yield was found to be positively associated with Relative Humidity, Effect of temperature on radiation use efficiency, Deficit by precipitation, Total rainfall precipitation during the crop cycle, Global solar radiation based on latitude and Julian day and Dew-point temperature at 2 m above the surface of the earth.

Abstract:Background: The challenge to food security posed by climate change and coupled with the substantial rise in the global population, necessitate a shift in crop improvement programmes towards developing crop cultivars with stable and high yield potentials across a wide range of agro-ecological conditions. Methods: New high yielding crop varieties with stable performance across environments are enabling the expansion of their production area into non-traditional environments with semi-arid climates. Soybean (Glycine max L.), a tropical leguminous crop, has received significant attention as a target crop in breeding programmes for adaptation to semi-arid environments, due to its low water content, high nutritive value and the capacity to produce a variety of products. The objective of this study was to asses yield performance and stability of promising soybean genotypes under contrasting environments in the semi-arid zone of Sudan. We evaluated five soybean genotypes using a split plot design with environment as the main plot and genotype as the subplot. Result: Combined ANOVA showed significant differences among the genotypes, environment and genotype x environment interaction. Moreover, significant positive relationships were observed between seed yield and number of days to 95% flowering, 100-seed weight, leaf area and number of pods per plant. AMMI stability values revealed significant differences among the genotypes and genotype-by-environment main effects for seed yield. Similarly, results of GGE biplot showed significant contributions of genotypes and genotype-by-environment main effects. The stability models enabled us to identify genotypes with superior performance to specific environments. TGX 1904-6F, was found to be the most stable genotype with appreciable seed yield and adaptability across all environments that can be recommended for release to farmers in semi-arid Sudan.

Abstract:Faba beans are considered one of the most important crops for animal feed. The genotype × environment interaction (GEI) has a considerable effect on faba bean seed production. The objectives of this study included assessing multiple locations and genotypes to understand how various ecosystems and faba bean genotypes relate to one another, and suggesting the ideal climatic conditions, crop management system, and genotypes so that they are carefully chosen for their stability. A 2-year experiment was conducted in order to define the stability across four environments based on stability indices for certain characteristics: moisture (%), ash content (%), crude protein content (%), crude fat (%), total starch (%), and crude fiber content (%). Statistically significant differences indicated that GEIs were present. The heritability was generally high for qualitative traits in comparison with quantitative traits. The crude protein content, plant height, and thousand-seed weight were all positively correlated with the seed yield; however, the other qualitative variables were adversely correlated. The crude protein content of the cultivar Tanagra displayed a high stability index, followed by Ste1. Under conventional management, Tanagra demonstrated high values for the seed yield in Giannitsa and Florina. Ste1 and Ste2 are particularly promising genetic materials that showed high values under low-input conditions. The best genotypes to use and the most favorable environments/types of cultivation were the Tanagra cultivar, followed by the Ste2 genotype, according to the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) and genotype plus genotype-by-environment (GGE) biplot models. Earliness showed significant heritability values and very high stability indices, again indicating qualitative behavior according to genetic parameters. With the exception of the number of pods per plant, which demonstrated low heritability while having excellent index values, traits like seed yield showed relatively low-stability-based heritability values. Global efforts aimed at improving the genetics of faba beans might benefit from genotypes that exhibit consistent yields in various conditions.

Abstract:Pigeonpea [ Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh] is a widely grown pulse with high seed protein content that contributes to food and nutritional security in the Indian subcontinent. The majority of pigeonpea varieties cultivated in India are of medium duration (<180 days to maturity), which makes it essential for breeders to focus on the development of stable high-yielding varieties. The diverse agroecological regime in the Indian subcontinent necessitates an efficient multi-environment study by taking into consideration genotype (G) × environment (E) interaction (GEI) that has a significant impact on traits like grain yield (GY) in developing high-yielding and widely adaptable varieties. In the present study, 37 pigeonpea genotypes were evaluated during the 2021 rainy season at ARS Badnapur, ARS Tandur, BAU Ranchi, GKVK Bengaluru, and ICRISAT Patancheru. The GEI was significant on the grain yield ( p < 0.01), and hence, genotype + genotype × environment (GGE) and additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) biplots along with AMMI stability value (ASV) and yield relative to environmental maximum (YREM) statistics were used to identify stable high-yielding genotypes. The interaction principal component analysis 1 and 2 (IPC1 and IPC2) explained 40.6% and 23.3% variations, respectively. Based on the rankings of genotypes, G37 (ICPL 20205), G35 (ICPL 20203), G8 (ICPL 19404), G17 (ICPL 19415), and G9 (ICPL 19405) were identified as ideal genotypes. Discriminativeness vs. representativeness identified GKVK Bengaluru as an ideal environment for comprehensive evaluation of test genotypes. However, ICPL 19405 was identified as the potentially stable high-yielding genotype for further testing and release across the test environments based on its mean grain yield (1,469.30 kg/ha), least ASV (3.82), and low yield stability index (YSI) of 13.

Abstract:Assessment of genotype x environment interaction (GEI) is an important constituent of cultivar selection process in multi-environment traits (MET). A set of 15 genotypes of winter safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were evaluated for grain yield, compatibility, yield stability and GEI in diverse environments under rainfed conditions. The analysis of variance conducted through AMMI method showed significant variation in grain yield with respect to mean squares of environments, genotypes, and GEI. The two main components, IPCA1 and IPCA2, accounted for 85.29% of the variation and GEI, indicating almost high biplot validity. Identification of Eco-Climatic Factors Driving Yields and Genotype by Environment Interactions for Yield in Early Maturity Soybean Using Crop Simulation

Abstract:Deploying crops in regions bordering their initial distribution area requires adapting existing cultivars to particular environmental constraints. In this study, we revealed the main Eco-climatic Factors (EFs)—climatic factors recorded over specific phenological periods—impacting both yields and Genotype by Environment Interactions (GEI) for yield in early maturity soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) under high latitudes. A multi-year (2017–2021) and multi-environment (n = 112) database was built based on the official post-inscription French soybean trial network “SOJA Terres Inovia-GEVES-Partenaires”. Yields of 57 cultivars covering MG00 and MG000 maturity groups were considered. For each environment, 126 EFs were calculated using a Crop Growth Model (CGM) based on observed weather data and simulated developmental stages. Partial Least Square (PLS) regression analyses using the Variable Importance in Projection (VIP) score were used to sort out the most relevant EFs for their impact on yield levels on the one side and on GEI for yield on the other side. Our results confirmed that yield levels for both maturity groups were greatly influenced by climatic factors from the seed filling phenophases, mainly End of Pod to Physiological Maturity. The cumulative potential evapotranspiration during the End of Pod to Physiological Maturity period was the main EF affecting yield levels positively for both maturity groups (VIP = 2.86; R2 = 0.64). Interestingly, EFs explaining yield levels strongly differed from those explaining GEI, in terms of both climatic factors and phenophases. GEI were mostly influenced by climatic factors from First Flower to End of Pod; these factors were maximum temperatures and solar radiation intensity. Cold stress from Sowing to First Seed also appeared to be a critical driver for GEI in MG00 soybeans. The contrasted responses of several cultivars to the main GEI-drivers highlighted a potential genetic variability that could be exploited in early maturity soybean breeding. This study revealed the complexity of GEI ecophysiology, and our results should help breeding strategies to deliver germplasm that outperforms the existing genetic material for expanding the crop to northern European regions.

Abstract:The current study focused on Identification of stable line among the eight groundnut ABLs and two checks were assessed in three different environments in Karnataka during the 2020-2021 Kharif and Rabi seasons with randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences (p≤0.01) among the genotypes, environments, and the genotype by environment interaction (G×E) for kernel yield. The AMMI analysis also showed highly significant differences (p≤0.01) for varieties, environments, and their interaction on kernel yield. The IPCA1 and IPCA2 components explained 72.72% and 25.00% of the total G×E sum of squares, respectively. The variations in kernel yield were attributed to the environment (16.44%), ABLs (81.87%), and ABLs by environment interaction (1.68%). ABLs T65, T77, T81, and T82 were identified as stable across all three environments based on ASV and SI for kernel yield per plant. These stable lines can be used as parents in breeding programs. The AMMI model and GGE biplots were effective tools for evaluating the adaptability and stability of groundnut genotypes in diverse environments.

Abstract:Rice ( Oryza sativa L.) is an important member of the family Poaceae and more than half of world population depend for their dietary nutrition on rice. Rice cultivars with higher yield, resilience to stress and wider adaptability are essential to ensure production stability and food security. The fundamental objective of this study was to identify higher-yielding rice genotypes with stable performance and wider adaptability in a rice growing areas of Pakistan. A triplicate RCBD design experiment with 20 Green Super Rice (GSR) advanced lines was conducted at 12 rice growing ecologies in four Provinces of Pakistan. Grain yield stability performance was assessed by using different univariate and multivariate statistics. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes, locations, and G x E interaction for mean squares ( p < 0.05) of major yield contributing traits. All the studied traits except for number of tillers per plant revealed higher genotypic variance than environmental variance. Broad sense heritability was estimated in the range of 44.36% to 98.60%. Based on ASV, ASI, bi, Wi 2 , σ 2 i and WAAS statistics, the genotypes G1, G4, G5, G8, G11 and G12 revealed lowest values for parametric statistics and considered more stable genotypes based on paddy yield. The additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) model revealed significant variation ( p < 0.05) for genotypes, non-signification for environment and highly significant for G × E interaction. The variation proportion of PC1 and PC2 from interaction revealed 67.2% variability for paddy yield. Based on 'mean verses stability analysis of GGE biplot', 'Which-won-where' GGE Biplot, 'discriminativeness vs. representativeness' pattern of stability, 'IPCA and WAASB/GY' ratio-based stability Heat-map, and ranking of genotypes, the genotypes G1, G2, G3, G5, G8, G10, G11 and G13 were observed ideal genotypes with yield potential more than 8 tons ha −1 . Discriminativeness vs. representativeness' pattern of stability identifies two environments, E5 (D.I Khan, KPK) and E6 (Usta Muhammad, Baluchistan) were best suited for evaluating genotypic yield performance. Based on these findings we have concluded that the genotypes G1, G2, G3, G5, G8, G10, G11 and G13 could be included in the commercial varietal development process and future breeding program.

Abstract:In this study, to identify the association among different traits and to select the best rapeseed lines based on multiple traits, genotype × trait (GT) and genotype × yield × trait (GYT) biplot analyses were used. The results showed that using GYT biplot is more efficient than GT biplot. Generally, the graphical method of the GYT biplot represented an efficient and practical new way to recognize superior genotypes based on multiple traits in rapeseed breeding programs. The selection based on multiple traits enhances the crop cultivars merit to farmers. In this regard, 19 breeding lines as well as two commercial cultivars were studied using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications in three locations during the 2020–2021 growing season. In this study, to identify the association among different traits and to select the best rapeseed lines based on multiple traits, genotype × trait (GT) and genotype × yield × trait (GYT) biplot analyses were used. The results showed that using GYT biplot is more efficient than GT biplot. Based on the GYT biplot and superiority index (SI), the breeding lines G16 and G18 were considered as superior genotypes in combination with the agronomical traits, that is, 1000‐seed weight, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, number of lateral branches, plant height, and pod length with seed yield, which represents a genetic gain in rapeseed breeding program. Based on seed yield combination with phenological traits (early maturity), the breeding line G15 was selected as the best one. Moreover, the line G2 was defined as the superior one in combination of seed yield with pod length. The results indicated that there is a potential for simultaneous genetic improvement of the characteristics (i.e., plant height, number of seeds per pod, early maturity) in rapeseed. Generally, the graphical method of the GYT biplot represented an efficient and practical new way to recognize superior genotypes based on multiple traits in rapeseed breeding programs.

Abstract:Crop seeds are important sources of protein, oil, and carbohydrates for food, animal feeds, and industrial products. Recently, much attention has been paid to quality and functional properties of crop seeds. However, seed traits possess some distinct genetic characteristics in comparison with plant traits, which increase the difficulty of genetically improving these traits. In this study, diallel analysis for seed models with genotype by environment interaction (GE) effect was applied to estimate the variance-covariance components of seed traits. Mixed linear model approaches were used to estimate the genetic covariances between pair-wise seed and plant traits. The breeding values (BV) were divided into two categories for the seed models. The first category of BV was defined as the combination of direct additive, cytoplasmic, and maternal additive effects, which should be utilized for selecting stable cultivars over multi-environments. The three genetic effects, together with their GE interaction, were included in the second category of BV for selecting special lines to be grown in specific ecosystems. Accordingly, two types of selection indices for seed traits, i.e., general selection index and interaction selection index, were developed and constructed on the first and the second category BV, respectively. These proposed selection indices can be applied to solve the difficult task of simultaneously improving multiple seed traits in various environments. Data of crop seeds with regard to four seed traits and four yield traits based on the modified diallel crosses in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were used as an example for demonstrating the proposed methodology.

Abstract:Abstract Breeding for higher yield and wider adaptability are major objectives of soybean crop improvement. In the present study, 68 advanced breeding lines along with seven best checks were evaluated for yield and attributing traits by following group balanced block design. Three blocks were constituted based on the maturity duration of the breeding lines. High genetic variability for the twelve quantitative traits was found within and across the three blocks. Several genotypes were found to outperform check varieties for yield and attributing traits. During the same crop season, one of the promising entries, NRC 128,was evaluated across seven locations for its wider adaptability and it has shown stable performance in Northern plain Zone with > 20% higher yield superiority over best check PS 1347. However, it produced 9.8% yield superiority over best check in Eastern Zone. Screening for waterlogging tolerance under artificial conditions revealed that NRC 128 was on par with the tolerant variety JS 97–52. Based on the yield superiority, wider adaptability and waterlogging tolerance, NRC 128 was released and notified by Central Varietal Release Committee (CVRC) of India, for its cultivation across Eastern and Northern Plain Zones of India.

Abstract:One hundred and ninety-four patients with extra-abdominal desmoid tumors, most of them in the extremities, have been treated at the Mayo Clinic. One hundred and thirty-two patients (68 per cent) experienced a recurrence at an average of 1.4 years after the first treatment. A greater tendency for recurrence was evident in female patients, in patients who were more than thirty years old, in certain anatomical locations (especially the foot and calf), and most importantly after treatment by intralesional or marginal excision. In view of the excellent prognosis for survival, we recommend wide local excision when anatomically feasible or marginal excision and postoperative radiation therapy when function of the extremity would be severely compromised if excision with wide margins were done. A recurrent lesion that does not appear to be growing should be followed until evidence of growth of the lesion precipitates a secondary wide excision.
