Abstract:Flexible batteries based on gel electrolytes with high safety are promising power solutions for wearable electronics but suffer from vulnerable electrode-electrolyte interfaces especially upon complex deformations, leading to irreversible capacity loss or even battery collapse. Here, a supramolecular sol-gel transition electrolyte (SGTE) that can dynamically accommodate deformations and repair electrode-electrolyte interfaces through its controllable rewetting at low temperatures is designed. Mediated by the micellization of polypropylene oxide blocks in Pluronic and host-guest interactions between α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and polyethylene oxide blocks, the high ionic conductivity and compatibility with various salts of SGTE afford resettable electrode-electrolyte interfaces and thus constructions of a series of highly durable, flexible aqueous zinc batteries. The design of this novel gel electrolyte provides new insights for the development of flexible batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogel electrolytes have been widely explored in aqueous zinc‐iodine batteries (AZIBs), in light of their intrinsic strong water‐retention capability and superior flexibility of hydrogel network. However, hydrogel‐based AZIBs are still facing challenges due to the inferior ionic conductivity, dendrite formation, and corresponding fatigue‐induced damage. Herein, a hydrogel electrolyte is designed and engineered with preferentially aligned porous structures, where Zn 2+ can promptly transport along the pores. AZIBs fabricated from the hydrogel electrolyte exhibited distinct cycling stability over 1,000 h (500 cycles) at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, in light of the substantially improved mechanical robustness, the hydrogel electrolyte network remained intact over a 27,000‐cycle charging/discharging test at 5 A g −1 , with a slight change in capacity, surpassing most previously reported AZIBs. Such kind of hydrogel electrolyte‐based AZIBs can be further explored as the flexible power system for wearable devices, enabling significantly accelerated wound healing through electrical stimulation over the epidermal wounds. This work sheds light on hydrogel electrolytes design for long‐life aqueous zinc‐based batteries, with great potential as power systems for wearable and implantable devices.

Abstract:Flexible zinc-ion batteries have garnered significant attention in the realm of wearable technology. However, the instability of hydrogel electrolytes in a wide-temperature range and uncontrollable side reactions of the Zn electrode have become the main problems for practical applications. Herein, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) to design a binary solvent (H2O-DMF) is introduced and combined it with polyacrylamide (PAM) and ZnSO4 to synthesize a hydrogel electrolyte (denoted as PZD). The synergistic effect of DMF and PAM not only guides Zn2+ deposition on Zn(002) crystal plane and isolates H2O from the Zn anode, but also breaks the hydrogen bonding network between water to improve the wide-temperature range stability of hydrogel electrolytes. Consequently, the symmetric cell utilizing PZD can stably cycle over 5600 h at 0.5 mA cm- 2@0.5 mAh cm-2. Furthermore, the Zn//PZD//MnO2 full cell exhibits favorable wide-temperature range adaptability (for 16000 cycles at 3 A g-1 under 25 °C, 750 cycles with 98 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 under -20 °C) and outstanding mechanical properties (for lighting up the LEDs under conditions of pressure, bending, cutting, and puncture). This work proposes a useful modification for designing a high-performance hydrogel electrolyte, which provides a reference for investigating the practical flexible aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Due to the fast development of consumer electronics and wearable devices, demand for safe and light batteries is soaring. Flexible zinc-air batteries using quasi-solid gel electrolytes are considered a potential candidate because of their high energy density, long-term durability and safety. In this work, spinel NiCo2O4 is employed as the bifunctional catalyst for fabricating flexible zinc-air batteries. Electrochemical measurements in both the three-electrode and full-cell configurations indicate a good bifunctionality for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The flexible zinc-air batteries are assembled using a gel electrolyte consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 6 M KOH. A simple method for preparing the gel electrolyte is reported to maintain a high water content within the gel, which is the key factor facilitating the high discharge rate of flexible zinc-air batteries. The optimal flexible battery can be discharged at a large current density of 50 mA cm−2 for 5 min and reaches a capacity of 37 mAh cm−2 and a maximum power density of 64 mW cm−2. The origin of the decayed charge/discharge behavior and cell failure is investigated by the three-electrode chronopotentiometry and post-mortem X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. ZnO precipitation is considered the main reason for the decay of both zinc and air electrodes. The good flexibility during cycling is also demonstrated by a continuous bending test, revealing its potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Silver-zinc (Ag-Zn) fibrous batteries are considered as a promising power source for next-generation flexible/wearable electronics because of their superior safety, high energy density, and stable output voltage. Nevertheless, the widespread application of Ag-Zn batteries is hindered by their limited cycle life, primarily caused by Zn dendrite growth and Ag migration. Herein, we develop a flexible mild Ag-Zn fibrous battery with outstanding cycle performance via designing a bifunctional gel electrolyte. The graphene oxide (GO) introduced into the electrolyte provides dual enhancement in suppressing the growth of Zn dendrite and migration of Ag, leading to improved structural integrity and long cycle life. The designed fibrous battery demonstrates a high capacity of 0.85 mAh cm −1 and it can retain 90% (77.4%) of the initial capacity after 250 cycles under current density of 0.5 (5) mA cm −1 . Additionally, the battery can maintain its performance under various deformations and a four-battery set is employed as the power source for LED patterns and wearable sensors. This work provides a rational way to design advanced gel electrolytes for high-performance flexible batteries.

Abstract:Flexible aqueous battery is considered to be one of the most promising energy storage devices for powering flexible electronics. However, inferior interfacial compatibility in electrode–electrolyte interfaces and inefficient ionic channel of electrolytes usually result in potential troubles when applied in practical applications. Herein, we report a mild synthetic route to a sodium lignosulfonate-polyacrylamide hydrogel electrolyte with a high adhesiveness to achieve low electrode–electrolyte interfacial resistance and fast ionic conduction. Comprehensive experiments show that the catechol groups from sodium lignosulfonate demonstrate strong interactions with both cathode and anode materials, and thus greatly reduce the contact resistances across the electrodes. Meanwhile, the existence of sulfonate groups significantly enhances the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel electrolyte. Benefiting from this design, a low ohmic resistance of 3.8 Ω (i.e., 11.4 Ω cm2 ), a low charge transfer resistance of 22.5 Ω (i.e., 67.5 Ω cm2 ), a high ionic conductivity of 31.1 mS cm−1 as well as a 100% capacity retention upon harsh bending deformation can be realized in the flexible zinc ion battery, which are significantly superior to those in the traditional candidates. The present investigation provides new insight into addressing the interfacial issue plaguing flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:A robust, green, and high‐efficiency Zn‐gel electrolyte is developed via ethanol vapor‐induced assembly of cellulose molecules. The resultant Zn‐gel combines exceptional mechanical strength (0.88 MPa), high ion transference (over 0.7), and impressive ionic conductivity (exceeding 8 mS cm−1), holding great application potential as a self‐supporting electrolyte in fabricating flexible Zn‐ion batteries. The evolution of flexible Zn‐ion batteries (FZIBs) significantly hinges on the development of gel electrolytes, characterized by their mechanical properties, ionic conductivity, and environmentally friendly production processes. The prevailing challenge in this domain has been devising a gel electrolyte that encapsulates all these critical attributes effectively for practical application. This study presents a novel zinc ion gel (Zn‐gel) electrolyte developed for FZIBs, synthesized via ethanol vapor‐induced assembly of cellulose molecules. This innovative process fosters significant hydrogen bonding and ion‐complexation with Zn2+ ions, resulting in a gel with exceptional mechanical strength (0.88 MPa), high ion transference (over 0.7), and impressive ionic conductivity (8.39 mS cm−1). The Zn‐gel enables a FZIB to achieve a reversible capacity of 207.3 mAh g−1 and over 93% Coulombic efficiency after 500 cycles, devoid of liquid electrolyte. Highlighting a promising route for high‐performance, eco‐friendly gel electrolytes, this research advances flexible electronics and portable device applications, demonstrating the profound potential of bio‐based polymers in enhancing energy storage technology.

Abstract:Flexible zinc ion batteries are a promising energy supply for flexible and wearable electronic devices due to their high theoretical capacity, superior safety, low cost, and eco-friendliness. The rational design of highly efficient flexible zinc ion batteries with high electrochemical performance, long cycling life, and excellent mechanical deformability is still a formidable challenge, limiting their widespread application in flexible electronics. This paper summarizes the recent progress in designing and fabricating flexible zinc ion batteries from three aspects: device configurations, battery constituent components, and practical applications. First, we introduce the energy storage mechanism and summarize modification strategies of constituent components, including current collector, zinc anode, cathode, and solid/gel electrolyte, revealing their positive effects on the performance of flexible zinc ion batteries. Then, we elucidate advanced device configurations for flexible zinc ion batteries such as sandwich-type, planar, and fiber-type structures, followed by discussion on the specific properties of flexible zinc ion batteries that enhance their adaptability in practical applications, such as integration with electronics, self-healing ability, resistance to extreme conditions, and responsiveness to environments. The current challenges and outlooks are also presented.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed in the work area for a long time, but most key managements are not stable enough that brings great threats to the WSNs. In this paper a multi-phase key pre-distribution scheme based on hash chain (HM scheme) is proposed in which the work time is divided into phases with different key matrixes to guarantee the safety of WSNs. Simulation results prove that HM scheme performs with perfect stability even though the nodes change greatly.

Abstract:Flexible Zn-MnO2 batteries as wearable electronic power source have attracted much attention in recent years due to their low cost and high safety. To promote the practical application of flexible Zn-MnO2 batteries, it is imperative to develop flexible, mechanically robust and high performance solid state electrolyte. Herein, we construct a rechargeable quasi-solid-state zinc ion battery using kappa-carrageenan bio-polymer electrolyte. The kappa-carrageenan electrolyte is eco-friendly, low cost, and highly conductive (3.32 × 10-2 S cm-1 at room temperature). The mechanical robustness of kappa-carrageenan electrolyte is further reinforced by using a rice paper as scaffold. Benefiting from high ionic conductivity of the bio-polymer electrolyte, our zinc ion battery delivers a significant high energy density and power density (400 W h kg-1 and 7.9 kW kg-1, respectively), high specific capacity (291.5 mA h g-1 at 0.15 A g-1), fast charging and discharging capability (120.0 mA h g-1 at 6.0 A g-1). The zinc ion battery with bio-polymer electrolyte also shows excellent cycling stability and high bending durability. This work brings new research opportunities in developing low-cost flexible solid-state zinc ion batteries using green natural polymer.

Abstract:Abstract Progress towards the integration of technology into living organisms requires power devices that are biocompatible and mechanically flexible. Aqueous zinc ion batteries that use hydrogel biomaterials as electrolytes have emerged as a potential solution that operates within biological constraints; however, most of these batteries feature inferior electrochemical properties. Here, we propose a biocompatible hydrogel electrolyte by utilising hyaluronic acid, which contains ample hydrophilic functional groups. The gel-based electrolyte offers excellent anti-corrosion ability for zinc anodes and regulates zinc nucleation/growth. Also, the gel electrolyte provides high battery performance, including a 99.71% Coulombic efficiency, over 5500 hours of long-term stability, improved cycle life of 250 hours under a high zinc utilization rate of 80%, and high biocompatibility. Importantly, the Zn//LiMn 2 O 4 pouch cell exhibits 82% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 3 C. This work presents a promising gel chemistry that controls zinc behaviour, offering great potential in biocompatible energy-related applications and beyond.

An Ionically Crosslinked Composite Hydrogel Electrolyte Based on Natural Biomacromolecules for Sustainable Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as promising power sources for flexible and biocompatible devices due to their good sustainability and high intrinsic safety. However, their applications have been hindered by the issues of uncontrolled zinc dendrite growth and water-induced side reactions in conventional liquid electrolytes. Herein, an ionically crosslinked composite hydrogel electrolyte based on natural biomacromolecules, including iota-carrageenan and sodium alginate, is designed to promote highly efficient and reversible Zn plating/stripping. The abundant functional groups of the macromolecules effectively suppress the reactivity of water molecules and facilitate uniform Zn deposition. Moreover, the composite hydrogel electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 5.89×10-2 S cm-1 and a Zn2+ transference number of 0.58. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell with the composite hydrogel electrolyte shows a stable cycle life of more than 500 h. Meanwhile, the Zn||NH4V4O10 coin cell with the composite hydrogel electrolyte retains a high specific capacity of approximately 200 mA h g-1 after 600 cycles at 2 A g-1. The Zn||NVO pouch cell based on the hydrogel electrolyte also showed a high specific capacity of 246.1 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and retained 70.7% of its initial capacity after 150 cycles. The pouch cell worked well at different bending angles and exhibited a capacity retention rate of 98% after returning to the initial state from 180°-folding. This work aims to construct high-performance hydrogel electrolytes by using low-cost natural materials, which may provide a solution for the application of ZIBs in flexible biocompatible devices.

Abstract:Multi‐healable, mechanically durable hydrogel electrolytes based on double cross‐linked polyacrylamide incorporated with hydrophobic interactions are fabricated and used for dendrite‐free and self‐healable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries. The hydrogel electrolytes present excellent performance and promising applications for wearable electronics. Flexible aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are considered as one of the most promising energy storage candidates for wearable electronics, owing to their environmental friendliness, low cost, high safety, and high theoretical capacity. However, the practical application of flexible ZIBs is significantly impeded by the Zn dendrite growth and the poor mechanical endurability at the electrolyte–electrode interface. Mechanically durable hydrogel electrolyte with dendrite growth restriction and self‐healing ability is highly desirable to improve the durability and extend the lifetime of the flexible ZIBs. However, it is still a big challenge to simultaneously endow hydrogel electrolytes with all necessary properties. Herein, multi‐healable and mechanically durable hydrogels are fabricated by the synergy effect of strong chemical cross‐linking and dynamic physical hydrophobic associations. The obtained double cross‐linked polyacrylamide electrolyte (PAAm‐O‐B) has good tensile strain, strength, and stable electrochemical performance, with tensile strength up to 75 kPa, high self‐healing efficiency up to 50 broken‐healed cycles and lifespan up to 900 h dendrite inhibition behavior. The flexible Zn//MnO2 batteries using PAAm‐O‐B hydrogel electrolytes exhibit good mechanical durability with high specific capacity and long cycle lifespan even under 1000 bending deformations and superior self‐healing ability.

In Situ Polymerization of a Self-Healing Polyacrylamide-Based Eutectogel as an Electrolyte for Zinc-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Gel electrolytes have attracted extensive attention in flexible batteries. However, the traditional hydrogel electrolyte is not enough to solve the fundamental problems of zinc anodes, such as dendrite growth, side reactions, and freezing failure at temperatures below zero, which seriously restricts the development of zinc-ion batteries. As a flexible energy storage device, the zinc-ion battery inevitably undergoes multiple stretches, bends, folds, or twists in daily use. Here, a self-healing and stretchable eutectogel, designated as deep eutectic solvent-acrylamide eutectic gel (DA-ETG), was developed as a solid-state electrolyte for zinc-ion batteries. This gel was prepared by immobilizing a high-concentration ZnCl2 deep eutectic solvent (DES) into a polyacrylamide matrix through in situ polymerization under ultraviolet light. The eutectogel electrolyte showed exceptional mechanical properties with a maximum fracture strength of 0.6 MPa and a high ionic conductivity of 6.4 × 10-4 S cm-1. The in situ polymerization of the DA-ETG electrolyte in the assembly of a full solid-state zinc-ion battery increased the electrode-electrolyte interface area contact, reduced the ion transport distance between the electrode and electrolyte, minimized the internal resistance, and enhanced the battery's long-term cycling stability. Using the DA-ETG electrolyte, a remarkably high capacity of 580 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 was achieved by the zinc-ion battery, and a considerable capacity of 234 mAh g-1 was maintained even at 5 A g-1, showing exceptional rate performance. After 2000 cycles at 2 A g-1, the cell with the eutectogel retained a capacity of 85% with a cycling efficiency close to 98%, which demonstrated excellent cycling stability. The self-healing function enabled the prepared soft battery to be reused multiple times, with full contact between the electrode and electrolyte interface, and without device failures.
Superelastic hydrogel electrolyte incorporating helical protein molecules as zinc ion transport pathways to enhance the cycling stability of zinc metal batteries

Abstract:Flexible zinc metal batteries are one of the most promising candidates for future energy storage devices, however, their performance is hampered by current hydrogel electrolytes with low ionic conductivity and low mechanical strength. Herein, a superelastic hydrogel electrolyte (α-HP/PVA) is developed by incorporating α-helical protein (α-HP, extracted from wool) molecules in poly(vinyl alcohol) networks. Because of the unique α-helical structure and abundant functional groups, the obtained superelastic hydrogel electrolyte exhibits high fracture strength (4.97 MPa) and a high elongation rate (∼600%). In α-HP/PVA, it is demonstrated that Zn 2+ competitively coordinates with the N and O in the α-helical protein, which affords a low transport energy barrier and a short transport distance, achieving an ultra-high ionic conductivity of 93.8 mS cm −1 . Moreover, α-HP/PVA could avoid anodic passivation and corrosion to maintain the anode activity and guide the dendrite-free deposition. Consequently, the Zn|α-HP/PVA|Zn symmetric cell achieves a long cycle life of over 5300 h, and the full cell with the α-HP/PVA electrolyte and the NaV 3 O 8 –1.5H 2 O cathode exhibits a high-capacity retention of ∼96% after 800 cycles at 1 A g −1 . This study of advancing ion transport with a unique helical structure provides a new way to promote the application of zinc metal batteries.

Abstract:Flexible zinc–air batteries (ZABs) have attracted considerable attention due to their high energy density, low cost, and eco-friendliness. However, the poor cycle life and aqueous electrolyte evaporation considerably hinder their practical applications, and the key challenge lies in the development of a robust electrolyte with high conductivity and good stability. Herein, we fabricate a novel gel polymer-based electrolyte (GPE) strengthened by graphene oxide (GO) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). Particularly, the incorporation of rigid GO and CNFs into a sodium polyacrylate (PANa)-bonded network could significantly improve the conductivity and mechanical properties of the GPE. Impressively, the conductivity of the composite electrolyte is tested to be 178.6 mS cm–1 and the elongation capability is over 13.8 times of its initial length, making it a promising candidate for flexible energy storage. With such a designed GPE, the sandwich-structured flexible ZABs exhibit an extended cycle life of over 214 h at 2 mA cm–2 and are capable of working normally even under bending, implying their superiority for high-performance flexible ZABs.

Abstract:Flexible zinc–air batteries attract more attention due to their high energy density, safety, environmental protection, and low cost. However, the traditional aqueous electrolyte has the disadvantages of leakage and water evaporation, which cannot meet application demand of flexible zinc–air batteries. Hydrogels possessing good conductivity and mechanical properties become a candidate as the electrolytes of flexible zinc–air batteries. In this work, advances in aspects of conductivity, mechanical toughness, environmental adaptability, and interfacial compatibility of hydrogel electrolytes for flexible zinc–air batteries are investigated. First, the additives to improve conductivity of hydrogel electrolytes are summarized. Second, the measures to enhance the mechanical properties of hydrogels are taken by way of structure optimization and composition modification. Third, the environmental adaptability of hydrogel electrolytes is listed in terms of temperature, humidity, and air composition. Fourth, the compatibility of electrolyte–electrode interface is discussed from physical properties of hydrogels. Finally, the prospect for development and application of hydrogels is put forward.

Abstract:The advent of wearable electronics has strongly stimulated advanced research into the exploration of flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with high theoretical energy density, high inherent safety, and low cost. However, the half-open battery structure and the high concentration of alkaline aqueous environment pose great challenges on the electrolyte retention capability and the zinc anode stability. Herein, a starch-based superabsorbent hydrogel polymer electrolyte (SSHPE) with high ionic conductivity, electrolyte absorption and retention capabilities, strong alkaline resistance and high zinc anode stability has been designed and applied in ZABs. Experimental and calculational analyses probe into the root of the superiority of SSHPEs, confirming the significance of the carboxyl functional groups along their polymer chains. These features endow the as-fabricated ZAB a long cycle life of 300 h, much longer than that with commonly used poly(vinyl alcohol)-based electrolyte.
