Abstract:A novel MIL-88-NH 2 @COF composite was produced by in situ growth of covalent organic framework (COF) on the metal–organic framework (MOF) surface. To obtain a coating fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME), the MIL-88-NH 2 @COF composite physically adhered to the stainless steel wire. Combined with gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID), various analytes such as chlorophenols (CPs), phthalates (PAEs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were extracted and determined to evaluate the extraction performance of MIL-88-NH 2 @COF coated fibers and explore their extraction mechanism. This composite exhibit excellent extraction performance and adsorption capacity for various analytes, especially for PAHs with enrichment factor up to 9858. The SPME-GC-FID method based on MIL-88-NH 2 @COF fiber was established for the determination of five PAHs after the main extraction conditions were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the proposed technique showed a wide linear range (1–150 ng mL −1 ) with a low limit of detection (0.019 ng mL −1 ) and a high coefficient of determination ( R 2 > 0.99). The developed SPME-GC-FID method was used to determine PAHs in green tea and black tea samples, with good recoveries of 51.70–103.64% and 68.56–103.64%, respectively. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time MIL-88-NH 2 @COF composites have been prepared and applied to SPME. The preparation method of the composite provides a new idea in adsorbent preparation, which will contribute to the field of SPME.
Nanoleaf-derived carbon materials as a sensitivity coating for solid‑phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract:Metal-organic framework-derived carbon materials have shown extensive application in the sensitive extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but more active sites for its adsorption were still a tireless pursuit. In this study, ZIF-nanoleaf-derived carbon (NLCs) was synthesized and developed as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber (NLCs-F). The extraction performance was compared with ZIF-dodecahedron-derived carbon (DHCs) coated fiber (DHCs-F), which was prepared by only changing the ratio of the reactants. The unique morphology of NLCs provided abundant adsorption active sites for the selected PAHs, while the large average aperture facilitated selective extraction of high molecular weight analytes. Additionally, the high carbon content enhanced the strong enrichment capability for hydrophobic PAHs. Hence, the prepared NLCs-F coupled with GC-MS showed a good correlation coefficient (0.9975) in a wide linear range, low limits of detection (0.3-1.8 ng L-1), satisfactory repeatability, and reproducibility, which made it apply in the enrichment of PAHs in actual tea and coffee samples.

Abstract:A three-dimensional (3D) structure of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) interwoven metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was synthesized. The MWCNTs was utilized to bridge the neighboring MOF nanocrystals. The hybrid material MOFs/MWCNTs was used for SPME coating to extract six PCB S in tea beverages samples by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. MOFs/MWCNTs coating materials were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N 2 adsorption–desorption analysis. The response surface method was utilized to systematically optimize the main extraction factors. Under the optimized conditions, the developed method demonstrated wide linear ranges (0.01–1000 ng·L −1 ), low limits of detection (0.003–0.009 ng·L −1 ) and high enrichment factors (701–2361) for extracting and determining six PCB S . The six PCB S concentration in environmental tea beverages samples was detected with this method. These results display that MOFs/MWCNTs hybrid materials are potential sorbents in the SPME of PCB S in environmental tea beverages samples.

Abstract:The efficient extraction of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) is challenging due to their extremely low concentration, complicated matrices and hydrophilicity. Herein, hollow microspheres, as an ideal coating, possesses significant potential for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) due to their fascinating properties. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes hollow microspheres (MWCNTs-HMs) were utilized as a fiber coating for the SPME of PAEs from tea beverages. MWCNTs-HMs were obtained by dissolving the polystyrene (PS) cores with organic solvents. Interestingly, MWCNTs-HMs well maintain the morphology of the precursors MWCNTs@PS. The layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of MWCNTs on PS microsphere templates was ac-quired through electrostatic interactions. Six PAEs, di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP), were selected as target analytes for assessing the efficiency of the coating for SPME. The stirring rate, sample solution pH and extraction time were optimized by using the Box-Behnken design. Under optimal working conditions, the proposed MWCNTs-HMs/SPME was coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) to achieve high enrichment factors (118–2137), wide linearity (0.0004-10 μg L-1), low limits of detection (0.00011-0.0026 μg L-1) and acceptable recovery (80.2%-108.5%) for the detection of PAEs. Therefore, the MWCNTs-HMs coated fibers are promising alternatives in the SPME method for the sensitive detection of PAEs at trace levels in tea beverages.

Abstract:Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminants in Chinese herbal medicines were determined based on metal covalent organic framework (MCOF) combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) methods. The MCOFs were constructed by using 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (Dt) and 4′,5′-bis(4-aminophenyl)-[1,1′′,2′,1′′-triphenyl]-4,4′′-diamine (BAPTPDA) as monomers. The morphological structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and the stability of BAPTPDA-Dt was characterized by various techniques such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that nickel foam (NF) was covered by covalent organic frameworks and that NF@COF (BAPTPDA-Dt) exhibited excellent stability. The adsorption capacity of MCOF for PAHs ranged from 30.8 to 262.5 mg g −1 . A number of parameters that might affect the extraction efficiency of D-μ-SPE were optimized, which resulted in a more efficient and time-saving extraction process (2 min) with less consumption of organic reagents (1 mL). The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 16 PAHs was performed by GC–MS with the limits of detection ranging from 0.55 to 5.93 μg/L. A wide linear range (20–2000 μg/L) was achieved with coefficient of determination (R 2 ) between 0.9930 and 0.9994. The recoveries for the three spiked sample concentrations (20, 200 and 500 μg/L) varied from 80.8 % to 126.7 %. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for PAHs were all less than 7.79 %. The total contents of the 16 PAHs contained in the five herbs (Gardenia, Plantain Seed, Rhizoma Alismatis, Evodia Fruit and Peucedani Radix) were in the range of 308–1070 μg kg −1 . The results indicated that the established method has significant repeatability and reproducibility.

Abstract:To improve the extraction efficiency of carbon fibers (CFs) toward organic pollutants, TiO2 nanorod arrays (NARs) were grown in situ on CFs. Subsequently, biochar nanospheres and covalent organic framework nanospheres were separately introduced to functionalize the NARs. A sequence of materials was produced by regulating the reactant concentrations and characterized using a scanning electron microscope, an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, an X-ray diffractometer, a Raman spectrometer, and a specific surface area analyzer. The materials were then deposited into separate poly(etheretherketone) tubes for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME). These tubes were evaluated with different types of organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), estrogens, bisphenols, and phthalate esters) using a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography and IT-SPME, and they exhibited diverse extraction performance. The extraction mechanism of each material is carefully discussed, and the structure–performance relationship is also summarized based on the chemical structures and extraction properties of the materials. The most efficient extraction materials for different analytes were discovered and used to develop analytical methods. Three online methods were used to sensitively detect PAHs, estrogens, and bisphenols in real water samples, respectively. Satisfactory results were obtained, including enrichment factors up to 6784, detection limits as low as 0.001 μg L−1, linear ranges of 0.003–15.0 μg L−1, and relative standard deviations ranging from 0.2% to 15.2%. The results indicate that these methods have some advantages over previous material-based methods.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework coated nickel foam () was prepared as a sorbent for the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized were characterized by different techniques. Various key parameters affecting the performance of the DSPE method, including the amount of sorbent, desorption solvent, desorption volume and time, extraction time, and sample volume, were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, combined with GC-MS was successfully applied to the determination of 16 PAHs in CHMs. The method showed wide linearity (20–2000 ng mL −1 ), low limits of determination (0.3–2.7 ng mL −1 ), and high recoveries (78.0–124%). These results revealed that has the potential for efficient extraction of PAHs from complex samples.

Abstract:In view of the serious carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which cause significant harm to human beings and the environment. Therefore, developing rapid adsorption and efficient analytical methods are research topic with practical significance. Herein, an innovative MOFs@COFs-based molecular trap materials were prepared with hierarchical porous core–shell structure and used as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, which combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to achieve the efficient separation, capture, and detection for 7 PAHs in real samples. The possible adsorption mechanism was systematically verified and explained. Under the optimized conditions, the method developed in this experiment had a wide linear range (0.005–400 μg·L −1 ) with a good linear correlation coefficient (R 2 > 0.9984), low detection limits (0.002–0.405 μg·L −1 , S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.005–1.351 μg·L −1 , S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.26–3.64% and 0.40–5.91%, respectively. Besides, the fiber showed higher enrichment capacity and extraction efficiency for PAHs compared to commercial SPME fibers and other material fibers, and exhibited excellent acid-base stability and reproducibility. This work provided a favorable synthetic pathway for the preparation of MOFs@COFs composites by layer-modified assembly synthesis strategy, showed excellent practical applicability as a SPME fiber coating combined with HPLC, and could be realized to provide technical support for future studies on the separation, adsorption, and analysis of PAHs in the petrochemical industrial zone of the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:A high pressure liquid chromatographic method has been developed for determining aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 in peanut butter. The method is based on extraction with acidified aqueous methanol, partition of the aflatoxin into methylene chloride, and purification of the extract on a 2 g silica gel column. The extracted aflatoxins are resolved on a microparticulate (10 micrometer) porous silica gel column in ca 10 min with a water-washed chloroform-cyclohexane-acetonitrile solvent that contains 2% isopropanol. The fluorescence detection system determines aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 at low levels, i.e., 0.25 ppb B1, 0.5 ppb G1, and 0.2 ppb B2 and G2. Multiple assays of 5 samples of naturally contaminated peanut butters containing total aflatoxins (B1 + B2 + G1 + G2) at levels of 1, 2, 3, 9, and 17 ppb gave intralaboratory coefficients of variation of 7, 4, 4, 11, and 3%, respectively. Samples spiked at levels of 5, 9, and 17 ppb total aflatoxins showed recoveries of 79, 81, and 81%, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, a durable hydrophobicity hydrazone covalent organic framework (BTCH-PTA-COF) has been developed as fiber coating, which was applied to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The hydrophobic and π-π packing interactions between BTCH-PTA-COF and PAHs were confirmed by contact angle experiments and Van der Waals surface electrostatic potential analysis. Further, large specific surface area, good chemical and thermal stability have positive promoting effect on extraction. The method of wide linearity (0.25–300 μ g·L −1 ), low detection limits (0.03–0.05 μ g·L −1 ) and high enrichment factors (767–1411) for the detection of PAHs is explored, coupling BTCH-PTA-COF based SPME with gas chromatography with hydrogen flame detector (GC-FID). The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for inter-day and intra-day extractions of PAHs are ranging from 4.1 % to 9.6 % and 2.9 % to 6.4 %, respectively. The method successfully detected and quantified trace PAHs in tea beverages and river water samples with recoveries from 88.5 % to 104.8 %. The BTCH-PTA-COF coated fiber is ultra-stable in recycled extraction and reused at least 120 times, which could surpass published and commercial SPME fiber.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and sulfur-containing heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PASHs) are typical organic pollutants that are commonly present in the environment. Due to the continuous accumulation and transfer in the food chain, they will pose a significant threat to human life and health. In the present work, a new method was constructed with a ternary magnetic nanocomposite (Fe0@MXene@COF-LZU1) based magnetic solid phase extraction in combination with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) for sensitive determination of them at trace level in Chinese tea samples. The magnetic nanomaterial Fe0@MXene@COF-LZU1 was synthesized via reduction and Schiff base reactions. The experimental results demonstrated that Fe0@MXene@COF-LZU1 had high adsorption ability and satisfactory chemical stability. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the method possessed good linearity in the concentration ranges of 0.0005 μgL−1 - 50 μg L−1 for dibenzothiophene (DBT), phenanthrene (PHE), fluoranthene (FLT) and pyrene (PYR), and 0.001 μg L−1 - 50 μg L−1 for 4-methyldibenzothiophene (4-MDBT) and 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). The detection limits of this method were in the range of 0.014 ng L−1-0.83 ng L−1. The results of real samples demonstrated that the designed magnetic nanocomposite had a promising application prospect for measuring PAHs and PASHs.

Abstract:The nature and fabrication of the fiber coatings with good adsorption capacity and selectivity play a decisive role in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, a facile strategy was proposed to fabricate a cobalt, phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped carbonaceous (Co-P-NC) coating on superelastic nitinol (NiTi) substrate as a binder-free fiber for SPME. In particular, direct electrochemical in situ growth of ZIF-67 crystals served as the N-containing carbon precursor and sacrificial template for subsequent controllable conversion of ZIF-67 into a novel porous Co-P-NC coating on the NiTi wire substrate via a phosphiding process in a N2 atmosphere. The obtained NiTi wire with the Co-P-NC coating (NiTi@Co-P-NC) was employed to investigate the adsorption of some representative aromatic analytes in water samples for the first time coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC/UV). The results proved that the resulting fiber showed superior adsorption selectivity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Therefore, the key parameters were further examined for the adsorption and preconcentration of PAHs. Under the obtained conditions, linear chromatographic responses were achieved over the concentration ranges of 0.03-100 μg L-1 with the correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9980 to 0.9991. Limits of detection (LODs) were between 0.007 and 0.149 μg L-1 (S/N = 3). The developed SPME-HPLC/UV method was applied to selective preconcentration and sensitive determination of PAHs in water. Moreover, this fiber had good fiber preparation reproducibility and presented 120 adsorption and desorption cycles at the same time in practical SPME application.
In Situ fabricated porous carbon coating derived from metal-organic frameworks for highly selective solid-phase microextraction

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been widely used in analysis of trace organic contaminants in environmental samples. Stable, efficient, and selective fiber coating is the key to the development of SPME technique. In this study, an in situ fabricated porous carbon coating that derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was introduced for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The carbon coating (denoted as MOF-74-C) was prepared by the direct carbonization of a MOF-74 coating that was in situ grown on stainless steel wire, which was explored for the extraction of odorous organic contaminants for the first time. MOF-74-C coated fiber showed high extraction efficiency (1.1–16.0 times larger than commercial fibers for most tested analytes under the same extraction conditions), as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Furthermore, it can selectively extract the analytes with the simultaneous exclusion of coexisting dissolved organic matter due to the molecular sieve effect invoked by the well-defined micropores. The method based on MOF-74-C coating for analysis of odorants afforded wide linear ranges (more than two orders of magnitude), low detection limits (below the odor threshold concentrations), good intra- and inter-day accuracies (90.1–107.3%) and precisions (relative standard deviations/RSDs below 9.4%) and satisfactory reproducibility (RSDs below 8.7%). Finally, the MOF-74-C coated fiber was successfully applied for the SPME analysis of odorants in real water samples. These results highlight the great potential of in situ fabricated porous carbons derived from MOFs for SPME applications.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a group of seriously hazardous environmental contaminants, have attracted extensive attention due to their carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and ubiquity. In this work, the excellent hydrophobic trifluoromethyl-enriched covalent organic framework (CF 3 -COF) was designed and synthesized as coating of solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The CF 3 -COF offered a high adsorption selectivity for PAHs, which could be attributed to the multiple interactions between the CF 3 -COF and PAHs, including hydrophobicity interaction, π-π and H bond interactions. Furthermore, headspace (HS) and direct immersion (DI) dual-mode solid-phase microextraction (HS/DI-SPME) were innovatively integrated as a dual-mode extraction by varying the length of SPME coating on stainless-steel, which could simultaneously and efficiently extract 16 PAHs with different volatile. Amazingly, the proposed strategy achieved fast adsorption for PAHs and shortened the adsorption equilibrium time to 15 min. By further integrating with gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS), PAHs could be detected in the range of 0.008–0.16 ng mL −1 with a quantitative limit of 0.029–0.47 ng mL −1 , respectively. The recoveries of PAHs in water samples ranged from 80.84 to 117.67 %. This work indicates that the dual-mode CF 3 -COF-SPME is a promising candidate for the enrichment of multiple hazardous substances in complicated samples.

Abstract:In order to improve the extraction ability of carbon fibers (CFs) for microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biochar nanospheres derived from glucose were in-situ grown onto the surface of CFs via hydrothermal synthesis. The surface morphology and elemental composition of biochar nanospheres-CFs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Thereafter, the biochar nanosphere-CFs were pulled into the polyetheretherketone tube for solid-phase microextraction, and the tube was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector to online detect PAHs. With the help of π-stacking, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic effect of biochar nanospheres, the extraction efficiency of CFs was greatly enhanced (enrichment factor increased by 293% compared with the original). The conditions affecting the analytical performance (sampling volume, sampling rate, methanol content, and desorption time) were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, an online analytical method for microextraction and determination of several PAHs was developed, and satisfactory results were achieved. The limits of detection were 0.003-0.010 ng mL -1 owing to high enrichment effect (2973-3600), linearity ranged from 0.010-15.0 ng mL -1 , and relative standard deviations were 0.4%-1.6% (intra-day) and 2.4%-4.4% (inter-day), respectively. The method was applied to analyze environmental water samples (rain water, snow water, and river water), and spiked recoveries within 80.0%-119% were obtained.
Development of a High-Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Melamine-Formaldehyde Resin-Based Solid Phase Microextraction Fiber for Enhanced Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Environmental Water

Abstract:An innovative solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFR), was synthesized with a green cross-linker, paraformaldehyde, and exhibited high heat resistance (up to 350 °C). Seven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were chosen as analytes, and the results demonstrated the MFR-based SPME fiber's exceptional enrichment capabilities and efficient extraction, with high enrichment factors and significantly improved efficiency compared to the conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fibers. The unique superiority of MFR was attributed to its strong π-π interaction and amino-associated enhancement, as well as its porous structure and rough surface, which provided abundant adsorption sites and facilitated rapid mass transport of analytes. Furthermore, the preparation conditions of the MFR-coated SPME fiber were compared with commercially available and reported fibers, emphasizing the advantages of the MFR-coated fiber, such as its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, reproducibility, and eco-friendliness. The MFR-based SPME fiber exhibited significant advantages, including high enrichment factors (ranging from 1906 to 7153 folds) for PAHs and good fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (8.7–14.6%), outperforming commercially available PDMS fibers by a factor of 4.9–82.8 folds. This study also considered important factors affecting the extraction process, such as ionic strength, temperature, and time, and optimized these parameters for the best extraction efficiency. The greenness of the developed method was assessed using Analytical Eco-Scale, and the results found that it was green in terms of regent dosage, energy consumption, and waste. The developed headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS) method based on the MFR coating exhibited excellent precision, accuracy, and repeatability, making it a reliable tool for the determination of trace PAHs in environmental water samples.
