Abstract:The unique hydrogeology of karst makes the associated groundwater respond quickly to rainfall events and vulnerable to anthropogenic pollutions. In this study, high-frequency monitoring of spring discharge, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC) and pH, along with monthly hydrochemical and microbial analyses, was undertaken at the outlet of Laolondong karst underground river in Nanshan, southwestern China. The aim was to explore the environmental effects of the catchment’s urban area on the karst groundwater resources. The monitoring data of a tracer test and the response of discharge to rainfall events demonstrate that conduits and narrow fissures coexist in the Laolongdong karst aquifer. The EC, Na+, Cl− and SO42− values (840 μS/cm, 33.7, 38.6 and 137.2 μg/L, respectively), along with high concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria, at the outlet indicate considerable urban pollution in this area. The contaminants sulfate and nitrate showed different relationships with discharge and EC in different stages of a rainfall event. This behavior provided information about aquifer structure and the influence of transport properties. Meanwhile, the hydrological processes of groundwater flow could be modified by urbanization and result in increasing magnitude of urban floods in the underground river. In addition, sulfuric and nitric acids introduced by urbanization not only impact the karst groundwater quality, but also result in a significant perturbation to the carbon cycling system in the karst area.

Effect of urbanization on the hydrogeochemical evolution of karst groundwater system:A case of the Laolongdong watershed, Chongqing, China

Abstract:The underground river is in Nanshan district of Chongqing City where the karst groundwater is well-developed.There are karst depressions,sinkholes,underground rivers and exposed springs,which has the features of sensitivity and vulnerability of typical karst groundwater systems.Due to urbanization and human activities,groundwater in this area has been seriously polluted in recent years.In this paper,an underground river conduit in the karst area is taken as an example.Through analyzing the evolution of the underground,water quality deterioration and pollution sources of the groundwater,the main controlling factors of groundwater pollution in the study area are discussed,in order to protect the groundwater and provide a scientific basis for groundwater governance in this area.From 2008 to 2012,the outlet of Laolongdong underground river was chosen as a water quality minoring locality where pH value,conductivity,water temperature,potassium,sodium,calcium,magnesium,bicarbonate,chloride,nitrate,sulfate and phosphate were measured on monthly basis.The principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyze the variation of water quality during the rainfall event in August 2011.Results indicated that in the process of urbanization,the ion concentrations of sodium,chloride,phosphate,calcium,magnesium,bicarbonate increased because of human activities.Meanwhile,the ion concentrations of nitrate,sulfate decreased due to the urbanization effect and agricultural activities.Moreover,water-rock interaction,human activities,and soil erosion played a crucial role in the hydrochemistry compositions and variation of the groundwater.Among them,dump of domestic sewage and solid wastes and the excessive uses of pesticide/fertilizers in urban residential areas are the main sources of pollutants such as potassium,sodium,chloride,sulfate,nitrate,phosphate,iron,manganese and aluminum in underground rivers.The water quality in this region varies because of the improvement of the urbanization levels and regional environment change.From the annual variation of nitrates and sulfates,the groundwater quality has been greatly improved.The karst area is sensitive and vulnerable in ecological environment.For resources protection purpose,it is essential to develop and utilize groundwater resources reasonably and reduce negative effects of groundwater pollution caused by human activities for realizing a win-win situation between the local economic benefits and sustainable development.
Natural and Anthropogenic Factors Affecting Geochemistry of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers in Urban Chongqing, SW China

Abstract:Owing to the complex relationship between natural factors and anthropogenic activities, rivers passing through urban areas present special challenges to geochemists attempting to understand geochemical conditions and fluxes. Research here on a river impacted by urban development, influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, helps to understand the mechanisms of the processes that cause changes in water quality. In this study, we collected water samples weekly at three sampling sites from the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers in the urban area of Chongqing. To explore the evolutionary processes and factors influencing surface water quality, we used stoichiometry and principle component analysis (PCA). Results show that the samples belonged to the HCO3·SO4Ca hydrochemical facies. The hydrochemical characteristics of the two rivers were mainly controlled by rock weathering. Carbonate mineral weathering exhibited the largest contribution. Sulfuric acid was involved in carbonate mineral weathering reactions, but gypsum dissolution had little effect on surface water chemistry. PCA revealed that rock weathering, soil erosion, domestic sewage, and agricultural activities contribute to the dissolved chemical load in the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers. The chemical characteristics of the Yangtze River mainstream exhibited changes due to recharge from the Jialing River. Compared with historical data (1959–1990), we found that river water in our study area was more acidic because of coal emissions from industrial activities in Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces. As a result of urbanization and the increase in domestic sewage, the average Cl−/Na+ molar ratio at the sampling sites is approximately 50% greater than historical background data. Furthermore, NO3− was sensitive to agricultural activities, indicating that agricultural activities have an effect on the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers in the urban Chongqing.

Abstract:Intense anthropogenic activities in a karst area will inevitably change the regional groundwater environment and affect the characteristics of the karst groundwater, such as the hydrochemistry and water quality. It is of great importance to study the evolution characteristics of the hydrochemistry and water quality of karst groundwater under intense anthropogenic activities to ensure the stability and sustainable development of karst ecosystems. In this study, a representative synclinal basin-type karst groundwater system in northern China was used as the study object, and the effects of intense anthropogenic activities on the evolution of the hydrochemistry and water quality of the karst groundwater were analyzed using a comprehensive application of a groundwater quality assessment, a multivariate statistical analysis, a hydrogeochemical analysis, and multi-factor regime monitoring of the karst groundwater quality. The results showed that during the time scale from 1991 to 2019, major ion components, such as Na + +K + , Ca 2+ +Mg 2+ , Cl − , SO 4 2− , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , and total dissolved solids (TDS), in the karst groundwater in discharge area increased by 1.73–4.59 times. In addition, the ion component contents primarily displayed a fluctuating equilibrium state from 2019 to 2023. At the spatial scale, the primary ion components in the karst groundwater in the discharge area were considerably higher than those in the recharge and runoff areas, and they also showed a gradual increasing trend from upstream to downstream and from the surrounding to the middle. Conclusion Intense anthropogenic activities changed the circulation conditions of karst groundwater and deteriorated the karst groundwater quality. The primary human activity factors that controlled the evolution of the karst groundwater during the different periods were different. The large-scale exploitation of karst groundwater and other human activities primarily affected the karst groundwater quality. The construction of the Zhuangli Reservoir had a positive impact and improved the karst groundwater quality downstream, but its long-term impact on the karst groundwater environment requires long-term monitoring and study.

Abstract:The application of combined isotopic and hydrochemical compositions may be useful for evaluating water quality problems in karst aquifers in which it is difficult to distinguish the sources of solutes from the natural background of those due to human activities. Multiple isotopes (δ13C–DIC, δ34S–SO42−) and chemical parameters were measured in rainwater, groundwater and sewage in order to elucidate the solute sources and impacts from human activities and natural background in the Laolongdong karst catchment in Chongqing Municipality, SW China. Overall, the dissolution of carbonate rock controls Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3− content in rainwater and karst groundwater. SO42− originated mainly from gypsum dissolution in karst groundwater. Carbonate rocks in the studied site could be dissolved jointly by H2CO3 from the natural CO2–H2O reaction and other acids (organic acids and HNO3) from sewage and soils. Sewage discharge from urban areas and agriculture activities lead to the increase of NO3−, PO43− and Cl− in karst groundwater. To protect and sustainably utilize the karst aquifer, sewage originating from urban areas must be controlled and treated and the use of fertilizer should be limited.

Abstract:The generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) may accelerate watershed erosion and promote the migration of heavy metals, then threaten local ecosystems such as aquatic life and even human health. Previous studies have focused primarily on influence of AMD in surface environment. In order to reveal the acidizing processes in karst high-sulfur coalfield in Southwest China, this study, by contrast, focused on the hydrogeochemical evolution process and acidification mechanism of mine water in Zhijin coalfield, western Guizhou Province. The oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides induced strong acidification of mine water according to the water chemical analysis. As a result, a series of geochemical processes such as dissolution of carbonates and silicates, hydrolysis of metal ions, and degassing of CO2 complicated water chemical evolution. The dissolution of silicates controlled the chemical composition of mine water, but more carbonates might be dissolved during the acidification of mine water. The sources of sulfate are quite different in water samples collected from the two selected mine. According to sulfur isotope analysis, the dissolution of gypsum is the primary source of sulfate in samples from Hongfa mine, whereas sulfide oxidation contributed a large amount of sulfate to the mine water in Fenghuangshan mine. The dissolution of carbonates should be an important source of DIC in mine water and CO2 originating from organic mineralization might also have a certain contribution. This study elucidated the groundwater chemical evolution processes in high-sulfur coal-bearing strata and provided a foundation for further study of carbonates erosion and carbon emission during acidification of mine water.

Abstract:It is important to investigate temporal variations of water chemistry for the purpose of improving water quality in karst groundwater systems. Groundwater samples were collected daily under various land uses of Guiyang. Major ions and stable carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) were analyzed to understand the biogeochemical processes. The water chemistry was dominated by Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, and SO42-, which mainly derived from the dissolution of carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) and oxidation of sulfide. The groundwater was defined as of the HCO3-Ca Mg and HCO3·SO4-Ca·Mg type, according to its hydrochemical characteristics. Results suggested that hydrochemical concentrations changed quickly, in response to rainfall events. The fast response revealed that karst groundwater was easily impacted by rainfall and anthropogenic inputs according to temporal variation of water chemistry. The distribution of DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) and δ13CDIC showed that DIC is mainly sourced from soil CO2(g) influx and carbonate dissolution. δ13CDIC and major ions ratios suggested that carbonate minerals were dissolved by H2SO4 at groundwater in wooded area, contributing an important source for DIC due to the slight enrichment of heavy δ13CDIC. More negative δ13CDIC values were observed after rainfall reflected the fact that soil CO2(g) and organic carbon oxidation influxes accounted for a large share during DIC formation. Various δ13CDIC and hydrochemical patterns were observed under various land use and human activity conditions. Meanwhile, relative high nitrate loads were found in groundwater after rainfall, suggesting high anthropogenic inputs following rainwater as having side effects on water quality. This study suggests that water chemistry and isotopic proof provide a better understanding of water quality and carbon dynamics responding to rainfall events in the karst groundwater systems.

Abstract:Hydrogeochemical processes of trace elements (TEs) are of considerable significance to river water and groundwater resource assessment and utilization in the karst region. Therefore, seven TEs were analyzed to investigate their contents, spatial variations, sources, and controlling factors in Guiyang, a typical karst urban area in southwest China. The results showed that the average content of TEs in river water (e.g., As = 1.44 ± 0.47 μg/L andCo = 0.15 ± 0.06 μg/L) was higher than that of groundwater (e.g., As = 0.51 ± 0.42 μg/L andCo = 0.09 ± 0.05 μg/L). The types of groundwater samples were dominated by Ca/Mg-HCO3 and Ca/Mg-Cl types, while those of the river water samples were Ca-Cl and Ca/Mg-Cl types. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis (CA) analyses indicated that As and Mn in the groundwater of the study area were related to river infiltration. The end-member analysis further revealed that river infiltration (As = 0.86-1.81 μg/L, Cl/SO42- = 0.62-0.89) and urban activities (As = 0.21-0.32 μg/L, Cl/SO42- = 0.51-0.89) were two main controlling factors of TEs (e.g., As, Co, and Mn) in the study area. In addition, the ion ratios in river and groundwater samples indicated that the weathering of carbonates was also an important control on the hydrogeochemistry of TEs (e.g., Fe and Mn) in Guiyang waters. This study showed that the trace element (TE) contents of groundwater in the Guiyang area were greatly associated with urban input and river recharge, and provided a new perspective for understanding the geochemical behavior of TEs in urban surface and groundwater bodies, which will help the protection of groundwater in the karst areas of southwest China.

Abstract:Karst groundwater is a vital resource for drinking, living and irrigation purposes in karst agricultural areas of the world. Due to the vulnerability of karst aquifers, surface pollutants are easily transferred to the subsurface and make karst groundwater be deteriorated, thereby restricting the rational exploitation of karst groundwater resource. In view of this, 49 karst groundwater samples were collected from spring (SW) and underground river (URW) sites in the suburban area of Chongqing City and analyzed for various hydrochemical components. Particularly, the karst groundwater quality was comprehensively uncovered by combining characteristics of hydrogeochemical evolution and health risks caused by nitrate and fluoride. The results revealed that the karst groundwater was slightly alkaline in nature and the water types were mainly characterized by Ca-HCO3 accounting for 93.88% of the total samples due to the heavy dissolution of carbonate rock. The relatively high concentrations of Na+, SO4 2− and NO3 − up to 271.88 mg/L, 277.94 mg/L and 56.94 mg/L were over the corresponding maximum acceptable limits for drinking water, which can be predominately attributed to the emissions of industrial park, dissolution of gypsum and pyrite and excessive application of chemical fertilizers. Although agricultural activities were stopped and chemical fertilizers were no longer applied during the sampling period, long-term application of fertilizers have a persistent adverse effect on the karst groundwater NO3 −. The pollution index of the karst groundwater (PIG) revealed that the low pollution and potential pollution zones were noticed in the northwestern parts of the study area. With respect of the SW, all the total hazard index (HI) values were below 1 suggesting no significant health risk. On the contrary, HI values of 0.11–1.16 for adults, 0.15–1.61 for children and 0.17–1.83 for infants in the URW indicated significant noncarcinogenic health risks. Particularly, infants and children were more vulnerable to karst groundwater NO3 − than adults. Furthermore, the noncarcinogenic health risks of karst groundwater can be mainly attributed to NO3 −, confirmed by the higher contribution ratio (66.55%) to the HI values. Therefore, special and targeted measures need to be taken to decrease the NO3 − concentration in agricultural area.

Abstract:Karst aquifer is the main source of drinking water in the world, but it usually has high vulnerability to contamination. Understanding the chemical characteristic is the precondition for the protection and management of karst groundwater. To reveal the hydrochemical process and the key factors dominating the chemical compositions of karst groundwater, 23 groundwater samples from Pingyin karst groundwater system and 3 surface water samples from the Yellow River are collected for hydrochemical and isotopic (δ 18 O and δ 2 H) analysis, and multivariate statistical analysis. Results indicate that two clusters (C1 and C2) can be generated from HCA based on groundwater samples. Samples in C2 (mainly collected in the southern hilly area) are predominantly Ca type, and samples in C1 (mainly collected in the central area) are mixed types. Chemical compositions of karst groundwater in the study area are mainly dominated by the dissolution of the dolomite minerals. However, domestic sewage has severely influenced the qualities of groundwater samples in C2. In the meantime, the chemical characteristics of karst groundwater in C1 are significantly influenced by the Yellow River. Soil media is only the basic geologic setting indirectly influencing the chemical compositions of karst groundwater. The karst groundwater samples in C2 are characterized by high level of NO 3 − and Cl − due to the seepage of domestic sewage, but the qualities of karst groundwater samples C1 turn to good due to the infiltration of the Yellow River water. The hydraulic connection between karst groundwater and surface water from the Yellow River is identified. At present, deep buried karst groundwater in the central plain along the Yellow River should be regarded as the main supply source for drinking and other purposes. In addition, government agencies should adopt some strategies to control the indiscriminate discharge of domestic sewage in the rural areas, and to further improve the water quality of the Yellow River to protect the karst groundwater environment in the lower reach of the Yellow River.

Abstract:Karst water quality degradation has been a challenge for domestic and industrial water supplies worldwide. To reveal the possible factors response for karst water quality degradation, Baotu karst spring system is studied as an representative example. In this study, a hydrogeochemical investigation and mathematical, statistical, and geochemical modeling was conducted together to identify the major hydrochemical processes involved in the degradation process. It is found that the karst water is normally fresh, neutral-to-slightly alkaline, with calcium and magnesium as the predominant cations, and bicarbonate and sulfate as the predominant anions. The abnormally high chloride (95.05 mg/L) and nitrate concentrations (148.4 mg/L) give clues to the potential source of contamination in some karst water. The main hydrochemical facies of karst water are HCO3-Ca and HCO3 × SO4-Ca, accounting for 76% of water samples. The water hydrochemistry is controlled mainly by the dissolution of carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), followed by the dissolution of silicate and gypsum. The dissolution of calcite and dolomite mostly happens in the recharge area. In the discharge area, the karst water is basically in equilibrium with calcite. The negative SI value of gypsum represents that the water–gypsum interaction is dominated by dissolution along the whole flow path. Cation exchange is observed in the karst water in the indirect recharge area. Along the flow path, the contents of chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and TDS (Total dissolved solids, abbreviated TDS, indicates how many milligrams of dissolved solids are dissolved in one liter of water) vary significantly, which is mostly affected by pollution from human industrial and agricultural activities. The concentrations of major ions were maintained at a low level (<20 mg/L) in the 1960s in karst water. The fast elevation of the parameter values has occurred in the past two decades. The temporal elevation of some pollutants in karst water suggest that global changes (acid rain) and human activity (such as overusing fertilizer) are main factors resulting in the degradation of karst water quality in the study area. The results of this paper provide invaluable information for the management and protection of karst water resources in the urban and rural areas.

Abstract:Surface water leakage and anthropogenic inputs into groundwater prevail in karst areas in China. In this paper, surface and ground water were collected and multiple isotopic tracers were integrated with hydrogeochemical parameters to characterize the residence time, recharge history, biogeochemical processes, surface leakage and anthropogenic influences in Jinci karst system. Most karst groundwater have depleted δ18O and δ2H values together with 14C ages of 3000–11,085 years. Several karst groundwater along the Fenhe River channel show remarkable enrichment of oxygen and hydrogen and young apparent 14C ages (60–1845 years), signifying recently communicating with surficial environment. Major anthropogenic components in the surface water (Na+, Cl− and NO3 −) and nutrients leak into groundwater along Fenhe River. Additionally, surface water leakage changes the microbial community in phylum and family levels for groundwater. The calculated river water leakage flux for the possible affected groundwater range from 61% to 87%, with the highest serious leakage found in Hekou county. Dominated by Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3 − and SO4 2−, the hydrogeochemical evolution of surface and ground water in the study area are largely controlled by dissolution of calcite, dolomite with gypsum and dedolomitization. Discharge of coal mine drainages and unregulated disposal of domestic sewage also contribute substantially to the groundwater hydrogeochemistry along the river leakage section, confirmed by lower δ34S values (1.8‰–4.7‰), depleted δ13C compositions (−12.2‰ to −10.4‰) and enriched δ18O and δ2H values. Karst groundwater in Hekou county show the highest contribution of coal mine drainage (36.4%) and moderate contribution of domestic sewage (8.6%).

Along the flow direction of the karst underground river, the hydro-chemical type is converted from HCO 3 -Ca type to SO 4 -Ca type. The concentrations of Sb and As also gradually decrease. Using PHREEQC to calculate the SI shows that: in the karst underground river system, both gypsum and fluorite are unsaturated, indicating a high degree of water-rock interaction. LogPCO 2 is negatively correlated with pH, indicating that the karst underground river systems are both open systems. The dissolution of carbonate minerals and the alternate adsorption of ions are the main water-rock interactions that lead to the rapid decline of Sb and As concentrations. This research also applies principal component analysis to identify the types of pollution in adjacent karst underground river systems. The results show that the LongBaiwei underground river was mainly affected by coal mining activities, and Fe was more prominent; the ShuiYa underground river was more significantly affected by the leachate from the antimony tailings yard. This study provides a scientific basis for the evolution of the water environment as well as strategies for pollution prevention and control in typical karst underground river systems owing to the influence of mining activities.

Abstract:Zhijin coal-mining district, located in Midwestern Guizhou Province, has been extensively exploited for several decades. The discharge of acid mine drainage (AMD) has constituted a serious threat to local water environmental quality, which greatly affected the normal use of local people. The Permian limestone aquifer is the essential potable water supply for local people, which covered under the widely distributed coal seams. To investigate the origin of the water, the evolutionary processes, and the sources of dissolved sulfate in the karst waters, the mine water, surface water, and groundwater near the coal mines were sampled for stable isotopes (H, O, and S) and conventional hydrochemical analysis. The results of hydrochemistry and isotopic composition indicate that the regional surface water and partial karst groundwater are obviously affected by coal-mining activities, which is mainly manifested in the increase of water solute concentration and the change of hydrochemical types. The isotopic composition of δ2HH2O and δ18OH2O indicates that the major recharge source of surface water and the groundwater is atmospheric precipitation and that it is influenced obviously by evaporation in the recharge process. The surface water is mainly controlled by the oxidation of pyrite, as well as the dissolution of carbonate rocks, whereas that of natural karst waters is influenced by the dissolution of carbonate rocks. The resulting δ34SSO4 values suggest that the dissolved sulfate source in the surface water is mainly pyrite oxidation but atmospheric precipitation for the karst groundwater. Given the similar chemistry and isotopic composition between surface water and partial groundwater, it is reasonable to assume that most of the dissolved sulfate source in part of the groundwater was derived through the oxidation of pyrite in the coal. Furthermore, the contamination of the surface water and partial groundwater from the coal seam has occurred distinctly in the catchment, which is enriched in SO42− and is mostly depleted δ34S in sulfate.

Abstract:Rivers have been widely reported as important CO2 emitters to the atmosphere. Rapid urbanization has a profound impact on the carbon biogeochemical cycle of rivers, leading to enhanced riverine CO2 evasions. However, it is still unclear whether the spatial-temporal patterns of CO2 emissions in the rivers draining diverse landscapes dominated by urbanization were stable, especially in mountainous areas. This study carried out a two-year investigation of water environmental hydrochemistry in three small mountainous rivers draining urban, suburban and rural landscapes in southwestern China, and CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and fluxes (fCO2) in surface water were measured using headspace equilibrium method and classical thin boundary layer model. The average pCO2 and fCO2 in the highly urbanized river were of 4783.6 μatm and 700.0 mmol m-2 d-1, conspicuously higher than those in the rural river (1525.9 μatm and 123.2 mmol m-2 d-1), and the suburban river presented a moderate level (3114.2 μatm and 261.2 mmol m-2 d-1). It provided even clearer evidence that watershed urbanization could remarkably enhance riverine CO2 emissions. More importantly, the three rivers presented different longitudinal variations in pCO2, implying diversified spatial patterns of riverine CO2 emissions as a result of urbanization. The urban land can explain 49.6-69.1% of the total spatial variation in pCO2 at the reach scale, indicating that urban land distribution indirectly dominated the longitudinal pattern of riverine pCO2 and fCO2. pCO2 and fCO2 in the three rivers showed similar temporal variability with higher warm-rainy seasons and lower dry seasons, which are significantly controlled by weather dynamics, including monthly temperature and precipitation, but seem to be impervious to watershed urbanization. High temperature-stimulated microorganisms metabolism and riched-CO2 runoff input lead much higher pCO2 in warm-rainy seasons. However, it showed more sensitivity of pCO2 to monthly weather dynamics in urbanized rivers than that in rural rivers, and warm-rainy seasons showed hot moments of CO2 evasion for urban rivers. TOC, DOC, TN, pH and DO were the main controls on pCO2 in the urban and suburban rivers, while only pH and DO were connected with pCO2 in the rural rivers. This indicated differential controls and regulatory processes of pCO2 in the rivers draining diverse landscapes. Furthermore, it suggested that pCO2 calculated by the pH-total alkalinity method would obviously overestimate pCO2 in urban polluted rivers due to the inevitable influence of non-carbonate alkalinity, and thus, a relatively conservative headspace method should be recommended. We highlighted that urbanization and weather dynamics co-dominated the multiformity and uncertainty in spatial-temporal patterns of riverine CO2 evasions, which should be considered when modeling CO2 dynamics in urbanized rivers.

Abstract:Various environmental factors could induce groundwater hydrochemical evolution, which should be considered when addressing groundwater environmental issues. However, the complex interactions among the environmental controls remain unknown for a groundwater flow system spanning multiple geological units. To fill this gap, we conducted a study on the groundwater hydrochemical evolution in the fluvial corridor of the Fen River, Northern China, utilizing a combination of hydrogeochemical and multiple isotope methods. Results reveal that the groundwater in the corridor has significantly degraded due to high concentrations of , , Cl − , or F − . We find an unordered evolution of the hydrochemical composition of groundwater along this corridor. These evolutions are driven by mineral dissolution/precipitation, dedolomitization, and cation exchange processes. Human activities play a significant role, with notable contributions including fluxes from agricultural fertilizers, manure, and sewage, as well as fluxes arising from coal mining activities. The combination between karst spring areas and faults/uplifts, between coal-bearing strata and mining activities fosters the mixing of karst water/mine water with shallow groundwater, promoting dramatic hydrochemical evolution of groundwater. The flat terrain and the natural blockage formed by mountains significantly enhance water–rock interactions and groundwater evaporation by slowing groundwater flow. The contribution of evaporation on groundwater salinity ranges from ~ 0.2% to 4.8%, highlighting its importance in the groundwater hydrochemical evolution. This study unravels the multifaceted nature of groundwater hydrochemical evolution. It emphasizes the four types of environmental controls, including hydrogeochemical processes, climate factors, human activities, and variations in geological settings, can be equally important, which is usually ignored. The findings enrich our understanding of groundwater evolution and highlight the challenges encountered in regions composed of diverse geological units.

Abstract:Coal mining may affect the hydrochemical characteristics and evolution processes of groundwater, leading to a deterioration in groundwater quality. This study was conducted to understand the hydrochemical characteristics and determine the hydrochemical processes controlling the karst groundwater hydrogeochemistry in Carboniferous Taiyuan formation in the Pingdingshan coalfield, Henan Province, China. Statistical techniques and conventional methods were utilized to gain a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogeochemical processes of karst groundwater. Results showed that the groundwater was fresh water, and was slightly acidic-to-slightly alkaline. The main cations were Ca2+ and Na+, and the predominant anions were HCO3− and SO42−. Most of the groundwater was predominantly of the Ca–HCO3 type. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), ion correlation analysis, and conventional graphic methods (Piper and Gibbs diagrams) indicated that the dissolution of silicate, gypsum, and carbonate minerals controlled the formation of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, SO42−, and HCO3−. Meanwhile, cation exchange was another important process regulating karst groundwater quality. Moreover, the concentrations of SO42− and NO3− were high, suggesting that the karst groundwater in this study area had been affected by anthropogenic activities, such as agriculture and mining. To avoid water inrush and keep mines east of the study area safely operational, the Guodishan faults within the mining area should be grouted to cut off the connection between limestone aquifers in the east and west study areas. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the scientific research on fertilizers that allow plants to absorb nitrogen rapidly and control the amount of fertilizer used to protect the groundwater from pollution. The results of this study are helpful for the prevention and control of water disasters, and are beneficial for groundwater resource protection in the Pingdingshan mining areas. They will also provide a reference for similar studies by other mining hydrogeologists across the world.

Abstract:The tanglesome allocation of landscape types at various spatial dimensions is an important component influencing the quality of groundwater environment in karst cities. Trace elements can be used as indicators of the extent of impact on groundwater which is an effective means of tracing groundwater contamination. In this study, we studied the influence of landscape patterns on trace elements in groundwater of typical karst cities in Southwest China (Guiyang City) on a multi-spatial scale by using multivariate statistical analysis. According to the sampling points, buffer zone scales with different radii (500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m, and 4000 m) were established to quantify the land use model. There are suburban and urban differences in trace element content. The city center has higher levels of trace elements compared to suburban areas, especially Li, Ni, Tl, Cu, Sr, Co, As, and Mn. In addition, the outcomes of the multiple linear regression had shown that the size effect of the association from landscape pattern to trace elements varies with different indicators and parameters. The results of redundancy analysis showed an overall change in trace elements was better interpreted by the landscape pattern of the 1500 m-scale buffer. At the same time, at the 1500 m scale, Ni, Tl, Cu, Co, As, Cr, Sr, Li, and Mn were positively correlated with the urban landscape index (4LPI, 4LSI), influenced by urban anthropogenic activities, while Cd, Zn, and Pb were positively correlated with the cropland landscape index (1AI, 1LPI), influenced by agricultural activities. This study indicates that trace elements are a reliable indicator for tracing groundwater contamination. The buffer zone can reflect the extent of urban impacts on groundwater and provide a new and effective analytical tool for groundwater management.

Abstract:Tuochangjiang River is a typical mining-type watershed in the karst mountainous area of western Guizhou province. The study of its hydrochemical evolution characteristics and driving factors is of great significance to the local economic development and the scientific management of water resources. The samples of river water, spring water, and mine water in the Tuochangjiang River Basin were collected, and the sources of solutes and their contribution to the chemical components of river water were discussed by means of hydrochemical diagrams, mathematical statistics, and the absolute principal component scores-multivariate linear regression model (APCS-MLR). The results showed that the pH of the river water ranged between 7.30 to 8.31, and the TDS value ranged between 40 to 520 mg·L-1, which was mainly contributed by Ca2+, Na+, HCO3-, and SO42-. The dominant cations in river water were Ca2+ and Na+, the dominant anions were HCO3- and SO42-, and the main water chemistry transitioned from HCO3-Ca to HCO3-Ca·Na and HCO3·SO4-Ca·Na type, whereas that of the mine water was mainly the HCO3-Na and HCO3·SO4-Na types. The chemical composition of river water was affected by rock weathering, exchange adsorption of anions, mineral dissolution and precipitation, and human activities, in which Ca2+, Mg2+, and HCO3- were mainly derived from the weathering and dissolution of carbonate and silicate rocks, Na+and SO42- were mainly from the discharge of mining wastewater, and Cl- and NO3- were affected by domestic sewage and agricultural activities, respectively. APCS-MLR analysis further showed that the river water solutes mainly included five sources:discharge of mining wastewater, dissolution of soil minerals, geological background, agricultural activities, and unknown sources, and their contribution rates to river water were 23.49%, 35.04%, 13.87%, 7.96%, and 20.63%, respectively. Mining factors and soil factors were the most important sources of solutes in the river water, and they were the main driving factors for the hydrochemical evolution of the Tuochangjiang River Basin.

Abstract:To determine the impact of natural factors and human activities on the hydrogeochemical evolution of karst groundwater, hydrochemical surveys were conducted in the Jinci spring area, north China. In the present work, a comprehensive method, including hydrochemistry, isotopes, statistical analysis and hydrochemical modeling, was applied to analyze the origin of karst groundwater, hydrochemical reactions, and the causes of SO 4 2− pollution. Isotopic characteristics ( 2 H and 18 O) suggest that karst groundwater is majorly replenished by precipitation infiltration and surface water leakage from the exposed carbonate rock areas. The hydrochemical facies evolve from HCO 3 -Ca and HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the recharge area, to HCO 3 ·SO 4 -Ca·Mg and SO 4 ·HCO 3 -Ca·Mg in the transitional area, and SO 4 -Ca and SO 4 -Ca·Mg in the discharge area. Naturally, dissolution or precipitation of calcite, dolomite, gypsum and halite, as well as cation exchange predominate the hydrochemical evolution. Due to long-term coal mining activities, acid mine drainage mixed with karst groundwater, resulting in strong SO 4 2− contamination of groundwater in the spring area. According to 34 S isotope fractionation, SO 4 2− is mainly from gypsum dissolution (64%), followed by pyrite oxidation (36%). In addition, the mixing processes, rock–water interactions, cation exchange, and dedolomitization were identified and confirmed by hydrochemical modeling with PHREEQC program. The findings of this work are meaningful for groundwater sustainable utilization and contamination management.
