Abstract:Trace metals are a group of toxic pollutants that can cause serious damage to ecosystems and humans. To determine the distribution characteristics of aqueous trace metal contamination and identify critical pollution sources, it is necessary to develop a detailed estimation of trace metal emissions. By considering emission-related factors in each industrial sector, we estimate that the emissions were approximately 2, 61 t, 2,684 t, 301 t and 309 t for mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and lead, respectively, in 2010 in China. These values are much higher than those provided in annual statistical reports. Our research identified critical emissions sources, including Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces and Raw Chemical, Non-ferrous Smelting, Non-ferrous Mining and Metal Products industries. However, Shandong and Metal Products are ignored in ‘The Twelfth 5-Year Plan for Complete Control of Trace Metal Pollution’. This research generally found that the allowable discharge levels had a significant impact on specific sectors. Total emissions are much lower than the maximum allowable under current Chinese emissions regulations but exceed limits recommended by Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (European Union). Furthermore, our study found that many regions located along upstream reaches of the Yangtze River, like Sichuan Province, are sources of cross-boundary pollution.
Investigation on the Contents and Fractionation of Heavy Metals in Swine Manures from Intensive Livestock Farms in the Suburb of Hangzhou

Abstract:The contents of heavy metals in pig feeds and swine manures and fractionation of heavy metals in swine manures from intensive livestock farms in the suburb of Hangzhou were studied.The results showed that the average contents of Zn,Cu,Mn and As in pig feeds were 324.0,294.1,156.2,and 5.9 mg/kg,respectively.Nevertheless,The contents of Zn,Cu,Mn,and As in the swine manures were 1064.00,1018.00,659.90,and 59.96 mg/kg,respectively.Based on the standard of contamination controlling in sludge for land application(GB4284-84),the contents of Cu and Zn in all manure samples exceeded the limitations,while the contents of As exceeded the limitations by 35%.The sequential extraction of heavy metals in the manure showed that Cu mainly existed as organically bound fraction,Zn and Mn existed as Fe and Mn oxide-bound fraction,while As existed as exchangeable form(with 31.2%) which is high available to plant.It could be forecasted that a potential risk of heavy metal contamination to foods and ecological environment would occur if long-term application of the manure at the dosage equal to N demand for crop growth.
Heavy metal contents in swine feces from key areas of Zhejiang Province and their risk evaluation for soil application

Abstract:[Objectives]Intensive swine industry in large scale is developed in Zhejiang Province. Over 96％ of the livestock and poultry waste produced have been recycled through making compost and organic fertilizer for agricultural production, one of the main way-outs. The heavy metals added in the feeds could find their ways through wastes into soil, affecting the soil safety and the growth of crops. In this study, we monitored the total content of heavy metals in swine feed and waste from pig farms in Zhejiang Province and evaluated the safety of feed use from the aspect of environment protection.[Methods]We collected 566 samples of swine feed and swine waste from three stages of pigs in 35 different scale farms, using high-pressure digestion, AAS, AFS, ICP-MS method to analyze the contents of nine metals including iron (Fe), copper(Cu), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg).[Results]1) The average contents in the swine feces were in order of Zn > Cu > Mn > As > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg. The main residual elements were Zn, Cu, Mn, and As, and their average levels were 2405, 1288, 528 and 28.2 mg/kg (dry base), with CV of 83％, 34％, 6％ and 15％, respectively. The levels of Cr, Pb, Cd were relatively low in swine wastes, ranging from 0.29 to 3.52 mg/kg, the Hg content was only 3.97 μg/kg. The metal contents in piglet stage were relatively high, and showed decreasing in big pig stage, the variations at all the three stages were large, with theCV 21％–112％, indicating that the addition of trace elements in pig breeding was chaotic. 2) 54.9％ of swine feces samples contained more than 15 mg/kg of As, and 16.9％ of samples contained more than 50 mg/kg of As, and 2.8％ samples contained more than 70 mg/kg of As. The monitoring data showed that there were obvious regional differences in the use of organic As, which had been forbidden in large feed companies. In Xiaoshan and Quzhou, about 72.7％ and 33.3％ of the samples added organic As in pig feed in different stages, however, both the regions had one pig farm in which organic was not used, indicating the possibility of banning organic As in feeds. 3) According to the "safety regulation for using livestock and poultry manure", 69.9％ and 16.9％ of swine feces samples were over limit in Cu and As levels. According to the "standard of organic fertilizer", 54.9％ of pig manure was found to be above the standards in As. 4) Generally, the contents of Fe, Zn, Cu in swine feces were concentrated in 7.0 to 10 times and Mn in 3 times. According to the current feeding monitoring, the contents of Zn, Cu and Fe were over added. 5) According to the estimation of dry land bearing capacity per unit area, Zhejiang Province is still capable of bearing the Zn, Cu load through swine wastes, but is not if the application of pig waste is more than 2.27 t per hectares (dry).[Conclusions]The addition of metal elements in the swine feed should be reduced, and organic arsenic should be forbidden in the feed production. According to the present monitored levels, the waste-produced compost should be applied in less than 2.27 t per hectare (dry) to prevent soil from heavy metal contamination.
Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.
Integrated Survey on the Heavy Metal Distribution, Sources and Risk Assessment of Soil in a Commonly Developed Industrial Area.

Abstract:The Jiangzhe Area was relatively common area that rely on industrial process for rapid development with serious heavy metals contamination. This study investigated the spatial, vertical and speciation distribution, correlation of heavy metals, as well as assessed pollution and health risks in three representative contamination industries at Jingjiang (electroplating site), Taizhou (e-waste recycling site) and Wenzhou (leather production site) in the Jiangzhe Area. The results indicated that the Cr(VI) pollution was serious in all three sites and there was a tendency to gradually decrease with depth. As for other heavy metals, not only the total concentration, but also the addition of acid soluble and reducible speciation generally decreased with soil depth at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites. Significantly positive correlations supported by correlation analysis were detected between the following elements: Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cr(VI)-Ni (p < 0.05) and Cr(VI)-Cu (p < 0.05) at Jingjiang site, Cu-Ni (p < 0.01), Cu-Cd (p < 0.01) and Ni-Cd (p < 0.05) at Taizhou site indicating possibly the same sources and pathways of origin, while the significantly negative correlation of Cd-Ni (p < 0.05) at Wenzhou site meaning the different sources. As regards the pollution assessment of topsoil, the mean PI value indicated that Cr(VI) contaminated severe in all three sites. In general, Jingjiang site was severe pollution (4.06), while Taizhou and Wenzhou (2.27 and 2.66) were moderate pollution, as NIPI value shown. In terms of health risk assessment that received much attention, non-carcinogenic risks caused by Pb contamination were significant for children at Jingjiang and Taizhou sites, with the HI values of 3.42E+ 00 and 2.03E+ 00, respectively. Ni caused unacceptable carcinogenic risk for both adults and children at all three sites. The present study can help to better understand the contamination characteristics of heavy metals in the commonly developed industrial area, and thus to control the environmental quality, so as to truly achieve the goal of ''Green Deal objectives ''.
Heavy metal distribution profiles in soil and groundwater near pig farms in China

Abstract:Intensive pig farming relies on the extensive use of heavy metal additions to feed and this poses a threat to the environment that receives the manure. Pig manure is still continually disposed of improperly and many farms do not possess waste treatment facilities. In this study, two typical pig farms that lacked waste treatment facilities in Beijing, northern China, and two in Hefei, southern China were selected to determine the distributions of Cu, Zn, and Cd in the environment near the farms. Our results indicated that Cu, Zn, and Cd levels were 1.28-36.60, 1.02-19.49, and 1.04-219.56 times their local background values, respectively. The order of frequency of individual metals that could potentially pose ecological risks to soils was Cd > Cu > Zn. All four pig farms were rated as possessing considerable or high risk according to the average contamination degree (C<sub>d</sub>). Our RDA result indicated that the heavy metals did not show a significant correlation with the bacterial community composition in the soils. Additionally, groundwater near these pig farms was safe for drinking. Our results indicated that detailed investigations are necessary to determine the extent of heavy metal pollution in soils adjacent to pig farms that lack proper wastewater treatment facilities. This study offers further and deeper insights into the heavy metal pollution from intensive pig farms to the adjacent soils.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the contents of heavy metals and Cd and Pb isotope ratios of agricultural soil and potential source samples collected from farmland receiving sewage irrigation in Wuqing District, Tianjin, China were determined. Multiple methods were used for source analysis, including positive matrix factorization (PMF), correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), and the Cd and Pb isotope ratio method. The results showed that agricultural soil was slightly contaminated by heavy metals in the research area, with relatively higher Cd and Pb accumulation levels compared to those of other heavy metals. Four types of pollution sources, including the soil parent material sources, industrial emission sources, agricultural practice sources, and mixed sources of sewage irrigation and transportation were apportioned and quantified by PMF, combined with the results of PCA and correlation analysis. The contribution rates quantified by the Cd and Pb isotope ratio method were similar, suggesting that no single source dominates Pb and Cd pollution. The contribution rates of Pb analyzed by the isotope ratio method were almost identical to those of the PMF model, indicating the rationality of the PMF result. Our results suggested that correlation analysis and PCA should be utilized to provide information for obtaining reasonable results and defining source categories for PMF, whereas the isotope ratio method should be applied to verify the accuracy of source contributions analyzed by PMF.

Distribution Characteristics of Heavy Metals in Feeds,Pig Manures,Soils and Vegetables

Abstract:Serious environmental problems caused by livestock and poultry manures are attracting increasing interests because large amounts of additives are added in feeds during intensive farming.This study investigated the concentrations of Cu,Zn,Pb and Cd in feeds,pig manures,soils and vegetables sampled from 39 intensive farming plants in Yujiang County,Jiangxi Province.The results showed that the rate of exceeding allowable limit of Cu in big pig feed and piglet feed were 81.6% and 30.8%,respectively.Meanwhile,the rate of exceeding allowable limit of Zn in big pig feed and piglet feed were 89.5% and 94.9%,respectively.In addition,Cu and Zn concentrations in some pig manures were also above the Pollutant Emission Standard for Livestock and Breeding Industry(In China).Furthermore,there were significant positive correlations between the heavy metal concentrations in feeds and pig manures.Total Zn concentration in 7.8% of soil samples and total Cd concentration in 5.2% of soil samples exceeded the Chinese Soil Environmental Quality Standard Ⅲ,which means they have been heavily polluted.The survey also showed that the concentrations of Cu,Zn,and Pb in all vegetable samples were lower than the National Food Hygiene Standard,while Cd concentrations in Ipomoea Aquatica and Colocasia Esculenta exceeded the standard.The significant positive correlations were found between the total Cu,Zn,Cd concentrations and the extractable heavy metal concentrations in soils.

Abstract:Vegetable production in China is suffering increasingly heavy metal damages from various pollution sources including agricultural, industrial and other activities. It is of practical significance to understand the effects of human activities on the accumulation and exchangeability of soil heavy metals in vegetable fields. In this study, seventy-two arable layer samples of vegetable soils were collected from the Shaoxing coastal plain, a representative region of the coastal plain of eastern Zhejiang province, China for characterizing the effects of fertilization methods on accumulation and exchangeable heavy metals in soils (Exchangeable heavy metals in the soil samples were extracted by 0.01molL−1 CaCl2). The different origins of heavy metals in the vegetable soils were investigated by multivariate statistical techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). Marked increases were noted for soil heavy metals due to long-term manure or chemical fertilizer application. Three significant components were extracted by PCA, explaining 78.86% of total variance. Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, and Al were associated in lithogenic components, while an anthropogenic origin was identified for Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg. However, As level was due to the geochemical background and was not linked to soil management. The results obtained by cluster analysis elucidated individual relationships between metals and agreed with PCA. Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn in the soils that were mainly associated with the application of chemical fertilizers, organic manures or other activities regarding soil management. Although the origin of Cd, Hg, and As was also attributed to soil management, other sources like vehicle exhaust or aerial depositions were not discarded as possible contributors. Soil amended with organic fertilizer contained more Cu, Pb, Zn and Cr; whereas the soil amended with chemical fertilizer had more Cd. Application of fertilizers also had significant effect on the concentrations of exchangeable heavy metals. Higher mean concentrations of exchangeable Cd and Pb were found in the soils amended with chemical fertilizers, while those of exchangeable Cu and Zn were found in the soils amended with organic fertilizers.

Abstract:The heavy metals pollution in poultry and livestock feeds and manures under intensive farming in Jiangsu Province was investigated. 97 feed and manure samples were sampled from 31 farming plants in 10 major cities of Jiangsu. 14 metals, including Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Mo, Mn, Ba, Co, Sr, Ti, As and Hg, were analyzed after samples acid digestion. The results showed that the most feed samples contained high concentration of metals exceeding National Hygienical Standard for Feeds. Meanwhile, it was found that Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd and Cr concentrations in animal manures were also high, for example, Cu concentration in a manure sample reached to as much as 1726.3 mg/kg. Heavy metals loading quantities in soil per year were then calculated when metals contaminated organic fertilizers were applied, and its effects on soil environmental quality were further evaluated.

Abstract:Concentrations of cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, and zinc in agricultural soils at 32 sites in the Lihe River Watershed of the Taihu region, East China, and their potential ecological risks and possible sources were investigated. Enrichment factor analysis demonstrated enrichment in the order Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cr. The potential ecological risk index and risk assessment code analyses indicated that, of the metals studied, Cd posed the most significant ecological risk in the study area. Statistical analyses, GIS mapping, and enrichment factor analysis suggested that Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn were derived mainly from anthropogenic sources, including agricultural, industrial, and vehicular emissions, while Cr and Ni were mainly from natural sources. Positive matrix factorization revealed that Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were sourced from industrial and vehicular emissions (73.7%, 21.3%, 71.4%, 20.3%, 75.0%, and 62.2%, respectively), the agricultural sector (26.3%, 36.3%, 6.8%, 38.9%, 15.7%, and 6.9%, respectively), and parent materials (0%, 42.4%, 21.8%, 40.8%, 9.2%, and 30.9%, respectively). It was recommended that strategies be implemented to reduce industrial point-source pollution.
Multivariate and geostatistical analyses of heavy metal pollution from different sources among farmlands in the Poyang Lake region, China

Abstract:PurposeIntensive urbanization and industrialization activities have caused the continuous discharge of heavy metals into the soils of China’s Poyang Lake region, where they pose a major threat to human health. Yet, the spatial characteristics of these heavy metals in farmland soils and their pollution sources in this region remain unclear.Materials and methodsWe collected 115, 84, 26, and 987 farmland soil samples with heavy metal pollution from different sources (industrial and mining enterprises, sewage irrigation, urban, and general farming) in the Poyang Lake region, respectively.Results and discussionDescriptive statistics revealed that 1.1% of As, 7.3% of Cd, 0.3% of Pb, and 0.2% of Hg concentrations did surpass China’s Soil Environmental Quality Management Standard (GB 15618-2018). In addition, 32.8% of As, 74.4% of Cd, 89.2% of Pb, 45.0% of Cr, and 13.7% of Hg concentrations of soil samples exceeded the background soil concentrations of heavy metals in this region, notably Cd and Pb, whose maximum values were respectively 11.64- and 21.47-fold the background values. Compared with general farming areas, the other three pollution sources had significantly higher concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr, or Hg in their soils. The results of principal component (PC) and geostatistical analyses showed that PC strongly related to mainly As and Cr was mainly influenced by natural characteristics while PC closely related to mainly Cd, Pb, and Hg was driven by mainly human activities in farmland soils from the four sources.ConclusionsFactor loadings for the different sources showed As and Cr on the same PCs, and Cd, Pb, and Hg on the other PCs, confirming the association of the heavy metal pollution with its sources.

Abstract:Heavy metals are the primary pollutants in agricultural soil and have hindered the sustainable development of agriculture. To control heavy metal pollution, it is essential to identify the pollution sources, particularly the prior source, in agricultural soils. In the current study, Qianguo Irrigation District, a typical agricultural region in Northeast China, was selected to be investigated for the source apportionment of soil heavy metals and identify the prior pollution source. The results showed that the study area was at a moderate pollution level with considerable ecological risk, while Hg and Cd were the main pollutants. Human-health risk assessment indicated that the non-carcinogenic risk for all populations was acceptable (HI < 1), and the carcinogenic risk was not negligible (10−6 < TCR < 10−4). The main pollution sources were concluded to be of lithogenic origin (35.5%), livestock manure (25.4%), coal combustion (21.5%), and chemical fertilizers (17.7%). Coal combustion was identified as the prior pollution source, accounting for 47.69% of the RI contribution. This study can provide scientific support for environmental management and pollution control of soil heavy metals in agricultural regions.

Abstract:Soil pollution by heavy metals is a major concern in China and has received much attention in recent years. Aiming to investigate the status of heavy metal pollution and the safety of vegetables in the soil of wastewater-irrigated facilities, this study investigated the distribution and migration characteristics of heavy metals in vegetable–soil systems of facilities in a typical sewage irrigation area of the Xi River, Shenyang City, northern China. Health risks due to the fact of exposure to heavy metals in the vegetable soil of facilities and ingrown vegetables through different exposure pathways were evaluated. Spatial interpolation and a potential ecological risk assessment were applied to evaluate the soil quality. Bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) were used to analyze the absorption and transportation capacity of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn by different parts of different vegetables. The results showed that the average concentration of Cd exceeded the standard values by 1.82 times and accumulated by 11 times, suggesting that Cd poses the most severe pollution among the four metals in the soil of facilities in the Xi River sewage irrigation area. In the city, a significant accumulation of Cd in the soil was identified with different spatial distributions. Cd also contributed the most in terms of the estimated potential ecological risk index, while the impacts of the other three metals were relatively small. The concentrations of heavy metals were mostly lower than the limit set by the corresponding Chinese standards. Various BCFs were observed for the four metals in the order Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb. Vegetables also demonstrated different BCFs in the order of leaf vegetables > Rhizome vegetable > Solanaceae vegetable. The magnitude of the noncarcinogenic risk for all four heavy metals was less than one for all three exposure routes and did not cause significant noncarcinogenic health effects in humans. However, the carcinogenic risk of Cd from some vegetables via dietary intake was considered higher. Protection measures should be taken to implement better pollution control and land use planning.

Abstract:Sewage irrigation solves rural water problems, pollutants in wastewater are retained in agricultural soils and enter the human body through crops, jeopardizing human health. Here, contamination features, source apportionments, and associated health risks from agricultural soils were systematically investigated in the Dongdagou Watershed. According to descriptive statistics and heavy metal evaluation, Dongdagou Watershed were mainly polluted by Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As, to different degrees. Health risk assessment results showed that the total hazard indices (THI) for preschool children were 3.20–4.11 and the total carcinogenic risks (TCR) were 9.09 × 10 –5 to 1.38 × 10 –4 . Monte Carlo simulation showed that THI values of 83.16–92.87% of children were > 1 and TCR values of 4.36–13.69% of children exceeded 10 –4 , indicating the HI risk to preschool children is unacceptable, and the carcinogenic risk could not be ignored. Positive matrix factorization analysis showed that Cd, Zn, and Cu in the soil are primarily from industrial activity, such as sewage irrigation (75.6%); Pb is primarily from atmospheric deposition; and Mn, Ni, and Hg are mainly derived from natural historical pollution sources. The source-oriented health risk assessment showed that sewage irrigation was the most important anthropogenic health risk source for children.

Abstract:The rapid industrialization and urbanization in developing countries have increased pollution by heavy metals, which is a concern for human health and the environment. In this study, 230 surface soil samples (0-20cm) were collected from agricultural areas of Jiaxing, a rapidly industrializing area in the Yangtze Delta of China. Sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) and multivariate factorial kriging analysis (FKA) were used to identify and explore the sources of heavy metal pollution for eight metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd, Hg and As). Localized hot-spots of pollution were identified for Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni and Cd with area percentages of 0.48 percent, 0.58 percent, 2.84 percent, 2.41 percent, 0.74 percent, and 0.68 percent, respectively. The areas with Hg pollution covered approximately 38 percent whereas no potential pollution risk was found for As. The soil parent material and point sources of pollution had significant influences on Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Cd levels, except for the influence of agricultural management practices also accounted for micro-scale variations (nugget effect) for Cu and Zn pollution. Short-range (4km) diffusion processes had a significant influence on Cu levels, although they did not appear to be the dominant sources of Zn and Cd variation. The short-range diffusion pollution arising from current and historic industrial emissions and urbanization, and long-range (33km) variations in soil parent materials and/or diffusion jointly determined the current concentrations of soil Pb. The sources of Hg pollution risk may be attributed to the atmosphere deposition of industrial emission and historical use of Hg-containing pesticides.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of soil in agricultural areas is the most prominent environmental pollution problem in China, seriously affecting human health and food security. It has become one of the environmental problems to which all sectors of society attach great importance. Soil heavy metals in the weathering area of hazardous geological bodies in southwest China have naturally high background attributes. Therefore, ecological risk assessment and analysis of potential sources of soil heavy metals in southwest China is of great significance for soil health management, soil heavy metal pollution control and territorial spatial planning. In this study, we collected 787 soil samples (0–20 cm) in Xuanwei County in China and analyzed the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils. Igeo, RI, HI and CR were used to calculate the pollution levels, ecological risks and human health risks. Additionally, the PMF model and one-way ANOVA were used to identify the potential sources and discuss the factors affecting the enrichment of heavy metals. The results showed that the mean contents of the surface soils were 1.190 (Cd), 139.4 (Cr), 96.74 (Cu), 0.081 (Hg), 56.97 (Ni), 46.66 (Pb) and 130.1 (Zn) mg/kg. All heavy metals exceeded the background values of the A layer soil in Yunnan Province. The Igeo showed that Cd was the most hazardous element in the study area, followed by Cu, Cr, As, Ni and Pb. The RI showed that low ecological risks, moderate ecological risks, considerable ecological risks and strong ecological risks accounted for 3.81%, 55.27%, 37.74% and 3.18%, respectively, of the total samples, and Cd was the main dominant element. The HI values of the As element in children were greater than 1, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk, and other elements' risks were acceptable. The CR values of Cr and Ni were higher than their limits (1 × 10−4), and both had carcinogenic risks in children and adults, as did As in children. According to the PMF model, four heavy metals sources were identified: geological sources (32%), sources from mining activities (19.38%), atmospheric deposition sources (17.57%) and agricultural sources (31.05%). Thereinto, As and Pb were mainly derived from agricultural sources, Cd and Cr were mainly associated with geological sources, Cu was largely from mining activity sources, Hg was mainly from atmospheric deposition sources and Ni and Zn were mainly from geological sources, mining activities and agricultural activities. The parent material has a significant influence on the enrichment of heavy metals in the soil, and the heavy metals are significantly enriched in the carbonate parent material and quaternary parent material. Topography also plays a role in heavy metal accumulation; Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn gradually decreased with the increase in altitude, and As and Pb increased with the increase in altitude. Mn-oxide played a crucial part in the enrichment of Cu and Zn, while SOC, K2O and pH had little influence on the accumulation of heavy metals.

Abstract:Farmland soil quality is a crucial determinant for agricultural productivity, food safety, and human well-being. Among the various contaminants, heavy metals have emerged as pervasive factors significantly impacting farmland quality, attracting widespread societal concern. In this study, we systematically applied multivariate statistical analysis, geostatistical methods, and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment technique to elucidate the sources and contributions of eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni) in farmland soils within an industrialized town. Our findings reveal that Cd, Hg, Pb, and Zn exhibit pollution or enrichment in farmland soils compared to natural background levels, with Hg and Cd surpassing 164.3% and 50.2%, respectively. Notably, Zn demonstrates discernible point-source pollution. Source apportionment results highlight industrial point sources, coal combustion, and agriculture as the primary anthropogenic contributors to heavy metal contamination, with zinc-plating enterprises being the predominant industrial point sources. Addressing the specific issue of point-source pollution from Zn in industrial activities, further analysis establishes a correlation between soil Zn content and the distance from zinc-plating enterprises. Utilizing an atmospheric transport model, we observe that the impact of industrial activities on soil Zn is limited when the distance exceeds 1.5 km, emphasizing the importance of monitoring Zn pollution within areas less than 1.5 km. This study pioneers a progressive source apportionment approach, considering the origins of different heavy metals, pollution levels, distance factors, and the cost-effectiveness of environmental measures. The insights gained provide scientifically sound strategies for future decision making in environmental protection.

Abstract:The concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in 16 samples collected from the lower reach (Changsha–Xiangtan–Zhuzhou section) of the Xiangjiang River in southern China were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (HR-ICPMS). Multivariate analysis, such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis, coupled with correlation coefficient analysis, was used to analyze the analytical data and to identify possible pollution sources of heavy metals. The results showed that the eight studied heavy metals accumulated in the sediments from the lower Xiangjiang River, especially Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd, which were 2.0–2.6, 1.7–2.6, 3.5–3.8, 3.2–3.6 and 189.5–152.8 times the soil trace element background for Hunan Province and UCC background values, respectively. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis, coupled with correlation coefficient analysis, revealed that the sediments from lower Xiangjiang River were mainly influenced by two sources: Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb mainly originated from industrial sources, whereas Mn was derived from both industrial and natural sources, but mainly from natural sources due to weathering and erosion.

Abstract:Food security and cultivated land utilization can be seriously affected by heavy metal (HM) pollution of the soil. Therefore, identifying the pollution sources of farmland is the way to control soil pollution and enhance soil quality effectively. In this research, 95 surface soil samples, 34 vegetable samples, 27 irrigation water samples, and 20 fertilizer samples were collected from the Wuqing District of Tianjin City, China and was used to determine their HMs accumulation and potential ecological risks. Then, kriging interpolation and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were utilized to identify the sources of soil HMs. The results indicated that soil HMs in the study area were contaminated at a medium level, but that the pollution of Cd was more severe, and the Cd content in vegetables was slightly higher than the permissible threshold (0.02 mg·kg−1). Furthermore, a non-homogeneous distribution was observed, with higher concentrations of HM contaminants concentrated in the southwest of the study area, where many metal manufacturing industries are located. Our results suggest that the Cd originated from industrial activity; As and Pb from agricultural practices; Ni, Cu, Cr, and As mainly from natural sources; Zn and Cu from organic fertilizer; Pb and Cd mainly from traffic discharge; and Cr, Ni, and Pb from sewage irrigation. Obviously, the accumulation of soil HMs in the study area could be mainly attributed to industrial activities, implying the need for implementation of government strategies to reduce industrial point-source pollution.
