Abstract:Currently, optical responses, including photo-stimulated luminescence, thermo-luminescence, and persistent luminescence have been revealed to provide advanced security in the field of anti-counterfeiting technology. However, developing optical materials with multi-modal optical outputs is scarce but urgent. Here, a series of multimode luminescent materials of LaAlO3:0.02Pb(2+) were synthesized successfully via chemical unit co-substitution, with Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ substituting for La3+-Al3+. The co-substitution makes the Pb 2+ ions be located in two kinds of different crystal environments, mainly due to the differences in bond length of Pb-O and geometry of PbO12, which are related to the changes in centroid shift, Stokes shift and crystal field splitting of Pb2+. Therefore, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ results in new emissions at 410 nm, 320 nm and 420 nm, respectively, along with the intrinsic emission of Pb2+ at 460 nm. Because of the increased deep traps, co-doping Li+-Ta5+, Ba2+-Ge4+ and Y3+-Sc3+ also enhances the NIR emission, which is related to the defect-related luminescent center of V-O(++)-Pb-La' Meanwhile, the prepared samples show various colors at different temperatures, due to the varied thermal quenching of Pb2+ emissions and the NIR emission. The prepared phosphors exhibited dynamical and multimode luminescence, and they outputted inimitable and advanced signals for optical anticounterfeiting, indicating that they are the potential materials for anticounterfeiting technology.

Abstract:The development of high-level anti-counterfeiting techniques is of great significance in economics and security issues. However, intricate reading methods are required to obtain multi-level information stored in different colors, which greatly limits the application of anti-counterfeiting technology on solving real world problems. Herein, we realize multicolor information anti-counterfeiting under simply external stimulation by utilizing the functional groups and multiple emission centers of lanthanide metal organic framework (Ln-MOFs) to tune luminescence color. Water responsive multicolor luminescence represented by both the tunable color from red to blue within the visible region and high sensitive responsivity has been achieved, owing to the increased nonradiative decay pathways and enhanced Eu3+-to-ligand energy back transfer. Remarkably, information hidden in different colors needs to be read with a specific water content, which can be used as an encryption key to ensure the security of the information for high-level anti-counterfeiting.
Synthesis of a Multiple Stimulus-responsive Multicolor Fluorescent Hydrogel

Abstract:On the basis of molecular structure design theory, a novel fluorescent ligand, 6-{3-[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] ureido} picolinic acid(UPA), was designed and synthesized. The hydrogels were prepared by the free radical polymerization with UPA and zwitterionic sulfobetaine(DMA) as monomers, clay as a physical crosslinker. The fluorescent ligand was introduced into the hydrogel structure by UV light curing, and then the lanthanide complex was formed in the hydrogel after Eu3+ or Tb3+ coordination, and a new intelligent rare-earth hybrid hydrogel material with high mechanical strength, good self-healing properties, multiple stimulus responsiveness(temperature, pH, the intensity of ion, etc.) and high luminescence efficiency was constructed, the problems such as poor stability and easy fluorescence quenching in the aqueous phase of rare earth luminescent materials, and poor mechanical properties and single function of traditional hydrogels were solved. It provides a new idea for the preparation of materials in the fields of information security and encryption, biological imaging, fluorescent labeling and so on.

Abstract:Optical encryption provides a significant implementation strategy for information security, which can be ascribed to multichannel, simple operation, and high security. Multiple responsive luminescent material has emerged as an ideal candidate for optical encryption, owing to intelligent responsive ability and unclonable security. Herein, a structural doping strategy is developed in the layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly process to elevate the maneuverability of light‐emitting color and mode. By encapsulating lanthanide doped inorganic matrix and layered hydroxide with PMA, the recognizable red‐orange fluorescence can be produced in the invisible region, and realizes the conversion of yellow and green fluorescence in visible region. Meanwhile, both excitation source and emission color can be used as distinguishable encryption means, which enables structural doping complex to be multiplexed and encoded with high capacity and complexity. Furthermore, asymmetrically and symmetrically coded flexible labels with specific color sequence are prepared by brushing process, and specific encryption key are set to ensure the nonlinearity of cryptosystem. Through the integration of dual‐mode and adjustable light response codes constructed by structural doping strategy, multidimensional high‐level information encryption can be realized, which opens up a deep exploration in the field of information security for the application of multifunctional optical properties of light response materials.
Super Adhesive Fluorescent Materials for Encrypted Messages, Underwater Leak Repair and Their Potential Application in Fluorescent Tattoos

Abstract:Achieving high‐performance luminescence for underwater bonding remains a significant challenge in materials science. This study addressed this issue by synthesizing a luminescent material based on an aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) monomer and copolymerizing it with lipoic acid (LA) to create an AIE supramolecular polymer. The resulting copolymer exhibited strong fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 365 nm due to the AIE of TPEE and enabled underwater adhesion. The P(LA‐TPEE) polymer demonstrated potential for digital encryption and decryption of quick response (QR) codes underwater. Furthermore, it could dissolve well in anhydrous ethanol, producing an environment‐friendly and super waterproof adhesive. Most notably, the P(LA‐TPEE) solution could be sprayed on human skin, creating an invisible tattoo that only became visible under UV light due to the hydrogen bond (H‐bond) and π‐π structures. This smart tattoo could be quickly wiped away with alcohol, avoiding the painful and harmful process of tattoo removal. It could also be repeatedly applied to draw the preferred tattoo pattern. This AIE supramolecular polymer showed great potential in underwater adhesion and repair, underwater message encryption, and non‐toxic and painless invisible tattooing. Abstract:The development of luminescent materials via mechanochemistry embodies a compelling yet intricate frontier within materials science. Herein, we delineate a methodology for the synthesis of brightly luminescent polymers, achieved by the mechanochemical coupling of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) prefluorophores with generic polymers. An array of AIE moieties tethered to the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) radical are synthesized as prefluorophores, which initially exhibit weak fluorescence due to intramolecular quenching. Remarkably, the mechanical coupling of these prefluorophores with macromolecular radicals, engendered through ball milling of generic polymers, leads to substantial augmentation of fluorescence within the resultant polymers. We meticulously evaluate the tunable emission of the AIE-modified polymers, encompassing an extensive spectrum from the visible to the near-infrared region. This study elucidates the potential of such materials in stimuli-responsive systems with a focus on information storage and encryption displays. By circumventing the complexity inherent to the conventional synthesis of luminescent polymers, this approach contributes a paradigm to the field of AIE-based polymers with implications for advanced technological applications.
Achieving Thermo‐Mechano‐Opto‐Responsive Bitemporal Colorful Luminescence Via Multiplexing of Dual Lanthanides in Piezoelectric Particles and Its Multidimensional Anticounterfeiting

Abstract:Optical characteristics of luminescent materials, including emission color (wavelength), lifetime, and excitation mode, play crucial roles in data communication and information security. Conventional luminescent materials generally display unicolor, unitemporal, and unimodal (occasionally bimodal) emission, resulting in low-level readout and decoding. The development of multicolor, multitemporal, and multimodal luminescence in a single material has long been considered to be a significant challenge. In this study, for the first time, the superior integration of colorful (red-orange-yellow-green), bitemporal (fluorescent and delayed), and four-modal (thermo-/mechano-motivated and upconverted/downshifted) emissions in a particular piezoelectric particle via optical multiplexing of dual-lanthanide dopants is demonstrated. The as-prepared versatile NaNbO3 :Pr3+ ,Er3+ luminescent microparticles shown are particularly suitable for embedding into polymer films to achieve waterproof, flexible/wearable and highly stretchable features, and synchronously to provide multidimensional codes that can be visually read-out using simple and commonly available tools (including the LED of a smartphone, pen writing, cooling-heating stimuli, and ultraviolet/near-infrared lamps). These findings offer unique insight for designing highly integrated stimuli-responsive luminophors and smart devices toward a wide variety of applications, particularly advanced anticounterfeiting technology.
Tunable Multicolor Lanthanide Supramolecular Assemblies with White Light Emission Confined by Cucurbituril

Abstract:A cucurbit[7]uril‐confined tunable full‐color luminescent lanthanide supramolecular assembly is constructed by CB[7], naphthylimidazolium dicarboxylic acid, lanthanide, and carbon quantum dots, which is applied to the multi‐level logic gate and intelligent multicolor anti‐counterfeiting inks. Macrocyclic confinement‐induced supramolecular luminescence materials have important application value in the fields of bio‐sensing, cell imaging, and information anti‐counterfeiting. Herein, a tunable multicolor lanthanide supramolecular assembly with white light emission is reported, which is constructed by co‐assembly of cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) encapsulating naphthylimidazolium dicarboxylic acid (G1)/Ln (Eu3+/Tb3+) complex and carbon quantum dots (CD). Benefiting from the macrocyclic confinement effect of CB[7], the supramolecular assembly not only extends the fluorescence intensity of the lanthanide complex G1/Tb3+ by 36 times, but also increases the quantum yield by 28 times and the fluorescence lifetime by 12 times. Furthermore, the CB[7]/G1/Ln assembly can further co‐assemble with CD and diarylethene derivatives (DAE) to realize the intelligently‐regulated full‐color spectrum including white light, which results from the competitive encapsulation of adamantylamine and CB[7], the change of pH, and photochromic DAE. The multi‐level logic gate based on lanthanide supramolecular assembly is successfully applied in anti‐counterfeiting system and information storage, providing an effective method for the research of new luminescent intelligent materials.

Color-Tunable Aqueous Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Supramolecular Assembly

Abstract:Developing room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with color-tunability performance in an aqueous environment is crucial for application in optoelectronic areas to a higher stage, such as multicolor display, visual detection of external stimulus, and high-level information anticounterfeiting, but still faces a formidable challenge. Herein, we propose an efficient design strategy to develop excitation wavelength-responsive RTP supramolecular co-assembly systems of a simple benzoic acid derivative and Laponite (Lap) clay nanoplates in aqueous solution, displaying an ultralong lifetime (0.632 s) and a high phosphorescence quantum efficiency (18.04%) simultaneously. Experimental and theoretical research studies suggest that this distinctive feature is due to the generation of more and efficient intersystem crossing pathways benefiting from the coexistence of isolated and J-aggregation states via controlling the doping of the benzoic acid derivative and the inhibition of phosphorescence quenching by water because of the synergistic effects of robust hydrogen-bonding interactions between Lap and the benzoic acid derivative, J-aggregations of the benzoic acid derivative, and good oxygen tolerance of the Lap clay. Abstract:Photoresponsive materials, altering their properties such as color, luminescence, and luminescence lifetime under light as external stimulus, would be ideal candidates for application in fluorescent anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. In this paper, we develop a water-dispersive photo-stimuli response hybrid by encapsulating lanthanide complexes and photochromic molecules with an organosilicon material (OSM) via the reprecipitation-encapsulation method. Interestingly, repeated cycles of UV/Vis light irradiation switch the color and structure of photochromic molecules, which in turn influence the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between photochromic molecules and lanthanide complexes, resulting in reversible luminescence ON/OFF switches, accompanied by reduction and recovery of luminescence lifetime of Eu 3+ complexes. Considering the above-mentioned interesting characteristics, we realized the application of Eu(DBM) 3 ·phen/ suspension as a light-driven fluorescent ink for fingerprint depth encryption. We expect our findings can expand the application scope of photochromic luminescence materials and provide a powerful approach for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Color-tunable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have raised wide interest due to their potential application in the fields of encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Herein, a series of CdX2-organic hybrid perovskitoids, (H-apim)CdX3 and (apim)CdX2 (namely CdX-apim1 and CdX-apim2, apim= 1-(3-aminopropyl)imidazole, X = Cl, Br), were synthesized using apim with both rigid and flexible groups as ligands, which exhibit naked-eye detectable RTP with different duration and colors (from cyan to red range) by virtue of different halogen atoms, coordination modes and the coplanar configuration of flexible groups. Interestingly, CdCl-apim1 and CdX-apim2 both exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent RTP properties, which can be attributed to the multiple excitation of imidazole/apim, the diverse interactions with halogen atoms, and aggregated state of imidazoles. Structural analysis and theoretical calculations confirm that the aminopropyl groups in CdCl-apim1 has not participated in luminescence, while in CdCl-apim2 has involved in luminescence including both metal/halogens to ligand charge transfer, and twisted intramolecular charge transfer. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these perovskitoids can be applied in multi-step anti-counterfeiting, information encryption and smart ink fields. This work not only develops new type of perovskitoids with full-color persistent luminescence, but also provides new insight into the flexible ligand and halogen engineering on the wide-range modulation of RTP properties.

Abstract:Excitation dependent luminescent materials, which have attracted significant scientific attention in the field of information security owing to information storage and luminescence properties. However, it remains a formidable challenge in developing excitation dependent luminescent materials with a simple synthesis method and predictably modulated luminescent outputs. Herein, a novel Ln3+/Fluorescent dyes@MOFs strategy is developed to generate excitation dependent continuous color-changing luminescent materials via a hydrothermal method and post-synthetic modification (PSM), based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) matrix doped with lanthanide cations and fluorescent dyes encapsulated into the lanthanide MOFs. The continuous proportional emission of mixed luminescence appeared within a single matrix in response to the different excitation wavelength and the proportional emission control (PEC) mechanism between the two luminescent centers is proposed. In addition, the photoluminescence platform demonstrates a distinct security method based on covert color that are controlled by distinct excitation wavelengths and excellent luminescence stability have also been verified in these new materials.

Abstract:Fluorescent polymer films (FPFs) doped with aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have attracted great attention of scientists for their potential to solve the aggregation-caused quenching effect of traditional fluorescent molecules. Here, to rich the information and enhance the function of FPFs, AIEgens (DCDPP-2TPA) doped FPF was placed in the middle of two different inverse opal photonic crystals (IOPCs), whose photonic band gaps matched with the FPF's red and blue region respectively. Owing to the regulation effect of the IOPCs, tunable Janus luminescence and structural color depending on the viewing angle were achieved. Through designing complex patterns in FPFs, encrypted information can be decoded simply by ultraviolet light. More importantly, the decoded information displays different luminescent colors on each side, and the luminescence on each side is tunable with viewing angles. The "sandwich" structure can be used in most daily environments. Its unique property of variable Janus emissions and structural colors endow the structure with highly safe anti-counterfeiting performance.

Abstract:Lanthanide coordinating polymeric microparticles are considered as versatile building blocks for construction of various advanced functional materials and devices, but the research involving the modulation of their fine morphology, luminescence properties and processability is still limited. Herein, we have synthesized an amphiphilic aromatic multi-block copolymer (abbreviated as amPENS) showing intrinsic blue fluorescence emission, which was further employed as a coordination ligand to sensitize the intrinsic fluorescence emission of Tb3+ and Eu3+. Specifically, the three dimensional (3D) emulsion confinement self-assembly of amPENS with lanthanide ions was explored to fabricate sub-micron sized Ln-PENS microparticles, whose fluorescence emission and surface morphology can be readily tuned via the concentration of amPENS and lanthanide ions, as well as stirring speed during emulsion self-assembly. More importantly, we further proved that the Ln-PENS doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution can be processed into multi-band emissive fluorescent nanofibers coatings via electrospinning. Basically, the current work reveals a new strategy to design lanthanide coordination polymeric superparticles with tunable morphology and fluorescence, which would open the way for fabrication of advanced lanthanide based materials for various applications such as sensing, anti-counterfeiting, information recording and optoelectric devices.

The methods to conjugate hydrophilic polymers with AIE dyes to solve the hydrophobic nature of AIE dyes and makeS them widely used in biomedicine, which have been extensively explored and paid great effort previously. Although great advance has been made in the fabrication and biomedical applications of AIE-active polymeric nanoprobes, facile and efficient strategies for fabrication of biodegradable AIE-active nanoprobes are still high desirable. In this work, amphiphilic biodegradable fluorescent organic nanoparticles (PLL-TPE-O-E FONs) have been fabricated for the first time by conjugation of AIE dye tetraphenylethene acrylate (TPE-O-E) with Poly-l-Lysine (PLL) through a facile one-step Michael addition reaction, which was carried out under rather mild conditions, included air atmosphere, near room temperature and absent of metal catalysts or hazardous reagents. Due to the unique AIE properties, these amphiphilic copolymers tend to self-assemble into high luminescent water dispersible nanoparticles with size range from 400 to 600nm. Laser scanning microscope and cytotoxicity results revealed that PLL-TPE-O-E FONs can be internalized into cytoplasm with negative cytotoxicity, which implied that PLL-TPE-O-E FONs are promising for biological applications.
Lignosulfonate/diblock copolymer polyion complexes with aggregation-enhanced and pH-switchable fluorescence for information storage and encryption

Abstract:Employing natural polymers as building blocks is favorable to construct sustainable functional materials and realize biomass utilization. Here we developed a series of supramolecular polyion complexes (PICs) composed of lignosulfonate and double-hydrophilic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide-b-N, N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PEO114-b-PDMAEMA24), which performed a blue emission with quenching-enhancing tendency and copolymer distribution inversion-involved assembling transformation at pH 5.6 and monotonic greenish-blue fluorescence promotion at pH 9.5 by increasing PEO114-b-PDMAEMA24 contents. Electrostatic interactions and multiple hydrogen bonds were revealed controlled the assembling behavior and affected the emission via altering the restriction of molecular motion, through-space conjunction, and non-luminous complexation. The multiple interacting sites and special topology of diblock copolymer contributed to the efficient fluorescence regulation. Information writing-erasing and encryption-decryption systems were established by utilizing emission intensity regulation and pH-responsive emission chromism. This work paved a new way to enhance lignin fluorescence and broadened potential applications of lignin composites in realms of sensing, imaging, monitoring, and anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive luminescent materials, showing obvious alteration of emission colours or intensity toward multiple external stimuli, have attracted extensive interest from researchers for decades, but the tailored synthesis of such materials with a single phase remains a tough challenge. Herein, we investigate a Cu( I ) cyclic trinuclear complex with the pyridyl-substituted pyrazolate ligand (denoted as complex 1 ), manifesting reversible multistimuli-responsive behavior in response to mechanical stimuli, temperature, organic solvents and vapor stimuli related to metal-sensitized ligand-based phosphorescence. In particular, the ground complex 1 showed remarkable alteration of emission colours after contact with CH 2 Cl 2 or CHCl 3 , thereby photoluminescence sensing towards these two organic molecules was realized. Further taking advantage of this feature, the luminescent AND and IMPLICATION logic gates and microarray data with the function of encrypted information transformation were designed. Experimental and theoretical evidence revealed that the introduction of the pyridyl group provided an effective site to interact with CH 2 Cl 2 or CHCl 3 , hence affecting the lowest triplet state and finally modulating the emission colours. This work demonstrates an effective route to construct multistimuli-responsive material via the supramolecular interaction of the pyridyl group for the application of logic gates and encrypted information transformation.

Abstract:Color-tunable luminescent hydrogels have shown significant potential in smart display devices, data encryption and multilevel anti-counterfeiting due to their excellent flexibility, functional versatility and optical properties. However, developing hydrogels that exhibit prominent optical decryption capabilities while maintaining robust mechanical properties remains a challenge. Herein, we present an Al 3+ stimulus-triggered luminescent hydrogel with the integrated properties of wide multi-color tunability, self-healing capacity, high strength (160%) and an impressive toughness (180 kJ m −3 ). The double-network in the hydrogel with rich hydrogen bonds is well compatible with various luminophores. These include luminescent layered rare earth hydroxide nanosheets (LRH NSs) with red/green (R/G) emission and a chemosensor molecule that displays a fluorescence "turn-on" change in blue (B) emission only in the presence of Al 3+ as a stimulus. Consequently, this smart hybrid hydrogel not only provides an adjustable tool for tuning the visible color of soft materials based on orthogonal responsive R/G/B three-primary-color luminescence, but also acts as a specific key for enabling color-switchable anti-counterfeiting and information encryption/decryption. These unique optical properties of the luminescent soft material highlight its potential as a hydrogel-based functional platform for the development of intelligent and color-tunable cryptographic devices with low cost, facile synthesis, and good processability.

Abstract:A novel S-heterocyclic annulated perylene diimide (SPDI) derivative connected to two polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles was designed and synthesized to reveal the effect of bulky substituent groups on its self-assembly behavior and photoluminescence properties. This featured organic-inorganic hybrid can easily self-assemble into crystalline microbelts with a length of several hundred micrometers. The phase behavior and crystal structure of the compound was then elucidated via a combination of different experimental techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), one-and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra, and tandem mass spectrometry with traveling wave ion mobility separation. The experimental results reveal that the compound has a strong propensity to form a dimer in solution and possesses unique molecular packing of discrete dimeric motifs in the solid state. Moreover, due to this discrete molecular packing behavior, the compound exhibits enhanced photoluminescence properties both in solution and in the solid state compared to the reference compound SPDI without a pendant POSS cage. In addition, based on the dual reactions of electron transfer and fluoride-triggered Si-O bond cleavage, the POSS containing SPDI exhibits higher selectivity and sensitivity to fluoride anions, and a quicker response against the reference SPDI without a pendant POSS cage. The enhanced luminescence properties, and the ability to form ultralong crystalline microbelts, in combination with the rapid selective response for F- make this compound a promising material for the fabrication of luminescent devices and colorimetric chemosensors.
