Abstract:The coupling of zinc with iodine evokes the fabrication of advanced rechargeable batteries via redox conversion. However, the easy sublimation of iodine and high solubility of polyiodides restrict the application of the battery. Herein, the dispersion of iron nitride nanoclusters among three-dimensional porous carbon frameworks (PC@Fe 2 N) enables the efficient accumulation of iodine in combination with the promising electrocatalysis for reversible conversion. The experimental and theoretical results revealed that the Fe 2 N nanoclusters anchored on the carbon support is more efficient to inspire the ensemble effect for reversible redox reactions of iodine via suppressing the formation of polyiodide. Therefore, the zinc-iodine (Zn-I 2 ) battery delivers excellent rate performance and ultralong cycling life for 20,000 cycles. Even at an elevated temperature of 60 °C, the pouch cell with a high iodine loading exhibited a reversible capacity 148 mAh g −1 , which exemplifies rational fabrication of advanced Zn-I 2 batteries for safe high-temperature energy storage.

Abstract:From both the cost and safety point of view, aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion based electrochemical energy storage devices are highly attractive as a substitute for lithium-ion batteries. The development of zinc‐iodine battery-capacitor hybrid devices (ZIBCHDs) properly integrated with zinc‐iodine batteries (ZIBs) and zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZICs) are desired to endure both the large energy density of ZIBs and the high-power density of ZICs. We demonstrated herein an N-doped porous carbon framework (3D) decorated with nanosheets (2D) hybrids can serve as a robust iodine host. Benefitting from its unique 3D2D microstructure, large BET surface area, and abundant surface functional groups, the resulting porous carbon/iodine cathodes can display battery level specific capacity and energy density as well as a supercapacitor level rate capability and cycle stability. The optimized cathode delivers a large reversible specific capacity of 291.5 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which is much larger than the corresponding ZIBs (163.8 mAh g −1 ) and ZICs (148.9 mAh g −1 ) revealing the broadening potential window can effectively utilize carbon scaffold to further boost the specific capacity. Additionally, the energy storage mechanism was fully explored through a series of ex-situ testing techniques, and a combination of physical/chemical adsorption-desorption and redox reactions mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries are emerging high-safety and cost-effective technology for large-scale energy storage. However, the high solubility of discharge species polyiodide in aqueous electrolyte is the major challenge for iodine cathode. Herein, the polyiodide doped conductive polymer cathode is proposed to suppress the dissolution of active materials in electrolyte. Abstract:Rechargeable Zn-I 2 batteries featuring intrinsic safety and high energy density demonstrate promising energy storage prospects. However, the poor interface stability of the Zn anode and the undesirable shuttle effect severely hinder the device stability due to the diffusive characteristics of the soluble polyiodides in aqueous media. Here, a synergetic physicochemical strategy that combines physical constraints and chemical absorption was proposed by developing a composite host matrix with a core/porous-sheath structure, which can effectively confine iodine species. Initial I − ions bind securely with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MCNTs) to form the C–I bonds through chemical interactions. Furthermore, the pore structure of microporous carbon (MPC) not only restricts the iodine species in the pores through physisorption (secondary adsorption) but also facilitates the diffusion of Zn 2+ . The as-prepared carbon nanotubes coated with microporous carbon (glucose as the carbon source, and its ratio to CNT is 12:1) can serve as a host material (CNT@MPC12), and adsorb iodide ions to derive CNT@MPC12-I − . As a result, the developed aqueous Zn battery with CNT@MPC12-I − cathode delivers superior reversible rate capacity (0.35 mA h cm –2 at 20 mA cm –2 ) and remarkable cycling performance (12000 cycles at 10 mA cm –2 ). Notably, such cathode can also exhibit an impressive capacity retention of 97% after 8600 cycles, even at an ultrahigh loading mass of 16.05 mg cm –2 . As such, our strategy can be extended to design other metal I 2 batteries with high loading and long-life expectancy.

Abstract:Zn-I2 batteries stand out in the family of aqueous Zn-metal batteries (AZMBs) due to their low-cost and immanent safety. However, Zn dendrite growth, polyiodide shuttle effect and sluggish I2 redox kinetics result in dramatically capacity decay of Zn-I2 batteries. Herein, a Janus separator composed of functional layers on anode/cathode sides is designed to resolve these issues simultaneously. The cathode layer of Fe nanoparticles-decorated single-wall carbon nanotubes can effectively anchor polyiodide and catalyze the redox kinetics of iodine species, while the anode layer of cation exchange resin rich in -SO3 - groups is beneficial to attract Zn2+ ions and repel detrimental SO4 2- /polyiodide, improving the stability of cathode/anode interfaces synergistically. Consequently, the Janus separator endows outstanding cycling stability of symmetrical cells and high-areal-capacity Zn-I2 batteries with a lifespan over 2500 h and a high-areal capacity of 3.6 mAh cm-2 .

Abstract:Highlights The porous structure and interconnected conductive pathways accommodate a large amount of iodine, entrap polyiodides and guarantee its efficient utilization. While the Fe single atom catalyst efficiently catalyzes the iodine/polyiodide conversion. With "confinement-catalysis" host, the ZnǀǀI 2 battery delivers a high capacity of 188.2 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 , excellent rate capability with a capacity of 139.6 mAh g −1 at 15 A g −1 and ultra-long cyclic stability over 50,000 cycles with 80.5% initial capacity retained under high iodine loading of 76.72 wt%.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-I2 batteries show broad prospects for grid-scale energy storage, but face limited capacity and low voltage plateau due to the single conversion of I2/I− coupled with serious dissolution of polyiodide in the electrolyte. Here we report a novel triple I+ storage, started by organic iodine electrolyte for the first time, in In-based metal–organic frameworks (In-MOFs) cathode for high-capacity Zn-I2 batteries. In this electrolyte–electrode cooperation, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII) contained Zn(SO3CF3)2 electrolyte interacts with SO3CF3− to yield I+ for 4 e− I−/I2/I+ conversion. Meanwhile, In-MOFs coordinate with I+ by –C=O and C–OH groups, and alloy with Zn2+ by In centers, to further boost the battery capacity. Such multi-synergy merits deliver an ultrahigh capacity of 481 mAh/g (based on the total mass of In-MOFs from the cathode and I+ ions from the electrolyte) at 1.0 A/g for aqueous Zn-I2 batteries. This study points to a new paradigm for electrolyte–electrode synergistic iodine storage to significantly enhance the capacity of Zn-I2 batteries toward practical applications.

Abstract:Compared with lithium-ion battery, aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine is of interest due to their high safety and low cost. Unfortunately, the host material's low conductivity, small specific surface area, shuttling effect, and high soluble iodine species (I 2 , I - , and I 3 - ) are inhibiting its wide development. In this work, a dual strategy of fixing iodine active material with nanotubular microporous carbon (MCN) and modified cotton fiber separator (MCN@CF) is employed to solve the above-mentioned problem. The Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) assembled with an MCN/I 2 cathode and MCN@CF separator show up to 162 mA h g -1 of reversible initial capacity with 85 % capacity retention at 100 mA g -1 after 100 cycles. Moreover, besides featuring excellent long-term cyclability, MCN@CF battery delivers a Coulombic efficiency of 99 % over 2000 cycles with a current density of 1 A g -1 . This study would lead to opening of a new paradigm for the development of highly reversible aqueous rechargeable ZIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries are considered as one of strong contenders for next-generation energy storage systems by virtue of their low cost and high safety. However, the shuttle effect of highly soluble I-3(-) in zinc-iodine batteries leads to a rapid decrease in capacity and Coulomb efficiency during cycling, which seriously hinders their further development and application. Here, we developed an in situ synthesis of an aqueous fast-charging and ultrastable Zn-I-2 battery cathode materials composed of mesoporous carbon and I-2. Compounding I-2 with highly conductive carbon is an effective method to facilitate electron and ion transport and confine polyiodides/I- conversion reaction inside pores, thereby eliminating polyiodides shuttle effect, which greatly improves cycling stability of Zn-I-2 batteries. The developed Zn- I2 battery provides a specific capacity of 90 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1), excellent multiplicative performance, and retains a capacity retention of 80.6% over an ultralong period of 39 000 cycles at 10 A g(-1), superior to previously reported Zn-I-2 batteries. Furthermore, Zn-I-2 pouch cell retained 89% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g(-1). This work undoubtedly sets a precedent for ultralong cycle life Zn-I-2 battery cathode materials and provides an important solution and pathway for the assembly of I-2 -based materials suitable for high-performance aqueous energy technologies.
Advanced Zn–I 2 Battery with Excellent Cycling Stability and Good Rate Performance by a Multifunctional Iodine Host

Abstract:The rechargeable zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) battery is a promising energy-storage system due to its low cost and good security, but the practical use of the battery is largely constrained by the shuttle effect and high dissolvability of iodides. Here a multifunctional iodine host, constructed with nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanocages (NCCs) by the polymerization carbonization activation method, is exploited to improve the electrochemical performance and lifespan of the Zn-I2 battery, achieving a high specific capacity of 259 mAh g-1, a good rate performance (maintaining 50.6% expanding 50 times), and a high cycle stability (retention of 100% after 1000 cycles). On the basis of the experimental results and theoretical calculations, NCCs via the introduction of N doping and nanosized porous structure can simultaneously provide rich and robust anchoring and catalytic sites to carry out the electrostatic adsorption of iodides and facilitate the reversible conversion between iodine and iodides. This work shows a novel and efficient strategy to develop high-performance and long-life Zn-I2 batteries.

Abstract:Zinc–iodine (Zn–I2) batteries hold great promise for high-performance, low-cost electrochemical energy storage, but their practical application faces thorny challenges associated with polyiodide shuttling and insufficient cycling stability. Herein, we propose molecular catalysis for long-life Zn–I2 batteries, employing Hemin as an efficient and stable molecular catalyst. The Hemin molecules containing pentacoordinated iron sites significantly adsorb polyiodides, improve the conversion kinetics of iodine species, reduce triiodide concentration, and suppress polyiodide shuttling. Benefiting from molecular catalysis, the Zn–I2 batteries demonstrate an exceptional cycling life, exceeding 62000 cycles with only 0.00052% decay per cycle while maintaining discharge voltage plateaus. The pivotal function of molecular catalysis in both the adsorption and conversion of polyiodide species shows its significant impact on improving the cycling lifespan of Zn–I2 batteries toward long-life energy storage.

High-Energy Density Aqueous Zinc–Iodine Batteries with Ultra-long Cycle Life Enabled by the ZnI 2 Additive

Abstract:Aqueous zinc–iodine batteries, featuring high energy density, safety, and cost-effectiveness, have been regarded as a promising energy storage system. Nevertheless, poor cycling stability and dissolution of iodine/polyiodide have greatly limited the development of zinc–iodine batteries. Here, iodine encapsulated by hierarchical porous carbon is employed as a positive material to assemble high-performance zinc–iodine batteries. Meanwhile, the utilization of the ZnI2 additive in the electrolyte can enhance the capacity and cycling stability of as-assembled devices because the existence of polyiodide (I3– and I5–) can effectively inhibit the dissolution of iodine. Thanks to the high conductivity and interconnected structure of the prepared carbon material, the as-assembled zinc–iodine batteries deliver an excellent specific capacity of 360.6 mA h g–1 at 0.5 C, a superb durability (∼98.4% retention of the initial capacity at a high density of 50 C after 35,000 cycles), and an ultra-high energy/power density of 422.6 W h kg–1/21.6 kW kg–1. Significantly, the mechanism of the constructed device was investigated by ex-situ Raman and ex-situ X-ray diffraction. Abstract:The study uses a zinc pyrrolidone carboxylate additive to reduce polyiodide concentration by preferential coordination with I2, following the Lewis acid–base effect. This suppresses the shuttle effect and improves conversion kinetics of iodine species. Furthermore, pyrrolidone carboxylate anions pre‐adsorb zinc anodes, impeding corrosion and promoting non‐dendritic zinc plating/stripping. Consequently, the zinc‐iodine battery demonstrates an ultralong cycling lifespan (>30 000 cycles). Aqueous zinc–iodine (Zn‐I2) battery is one of the most promising candidates for large‐scale energy storage due to its cost‐effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and recyclability. Its practical application is hindered by challenges including polyiodide "shuttle effect" in the cathode and anode corrosion. In this study, a zinc pyrrolidone carboxylate bifunctional additive is introduced to simultaneously tackle the issues of the polyiodide and Zn anode. It is revealed that the pyrrolidone carboxylate anions decrease the polyiodide concentration by preferential coordination between the pyrrolidone carboxylate anions and I2 based on the Lewis acid‐base effect, suppressing the shuttle effect and therefore improving the conversion kinetics for the iodine redox process. Meanwhile, the pyrrolidone carboxylate anions adsorbed on the Zn anode inhibit Zn corrosion and promote non‐dendritic Zn plating, contributing to impressive Coulombic efficiency and long‐term cycling stability. As a result, the Zn‐I2 full battery with the bifunctional zinc pyrrolidone carboxylate additive realizes a high specific capacity of 211 mAh g−1 (≈100% iodine utilization rate), and an ultralong cycling life of >30 000 cycles with 87% capacity retention. These findings highlight the significant potential of zinc pyrrolidone carboxylate as a transformative additive for aqueous Zn‐I2 batteries, marking a critical advancement in the field of energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) emerge as a clean energy transfer device with very excellent application prospects due to its abundant natural reserves, environmental friendliness, low cost, and good safety. However, the severe shuttle effect of soluble polyiodide in aqueous medium and the sluggish reaction kinetics of iodine substances restrict the application potential of ZIBs. Herein, we report a promising iodine host material for ZIBs by deriving from zeolite imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) with co-doping of cobalt and nitrogen. The synergistic effect of porous carbon and cobalt and nitrogen co-doping is revealed by employing in-situ Raman spectroscopy and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. It is found that the outstanding electrochemical behavior could be attributed to the efficient adsorption for polyiodide and catalyzing the conversion reaction between iodine substances, inhibiting the shuttle effect of polyiodide, and ensuring cycling stability. Consequently, the resultant ZIBs possess a high specific capacity of 152.4 mAh g −1 at rate of 5 C (1 C = 211 mA g −1 ), and long cycle stability of 24,000 cycles with more than 80 % capacity retention. This work provides a feasible and efficient strategy to realize high-performance ZIBs.

Abstract:The realization of high energy is of great importance to unlock the practical potential of zinc-iodine batteries. However, significant challenges, such as low iodine loading (mostly less than 50 wt%), restricted iodine reutilization, and severe structural pulverization during cycling, compromise its intrinsic features. This study introduces an optimized, fully zincified zinc iodide loaded onto a hierarchical carbon scaffold with high active component loading and content (82 wt%) to prepare a thick cathode for enabling high-energy Zn-I2 batteries. The synergistic interactions between nitrogen heteroatoms and cobalt nanocrystals within the porous matrix not only provide forceful chemisorption to lock polyiodide intermediates but also invoke the electrocatalytic effects to manipulate efficient iodine conversion. The ZnI2 cathode could effectively alleviate continuous volumetric expansion and maximize the utilization of active species. The electrochemical examinations confirm the thickness-independent battery performance of assembled Zn-I2 cells due to the ensemble effect of composite electrodes. Accordingly, with a thickness of 300 μm and ZnI2 loading of up to 20.5 mg cm-2, the cathode delivers a specific capacity of 92 mA h gcathode-1 after 2000 cycles at 1C. Moreover, the Zn-I2 pouch cell with ZnI2 cathode has an energy density of 145 W h kgcathode-1 as well as a stable long cycle life.
Long-Life Aqueous Zn-I2 Battery Enabled by a Low-Cost Multifunctional Zeolite Membrane Separator.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc iodide (Zn-I2) batteries are promising large-scale energy-storage devices. However, the uncontrollable diffuse away/shuttle of soluble I3- leads to energy loss (low Coulombic efficiency, CE), and poor reversibility (self-discharge). Herein, we employ an ordered framework window within a zeolite molecular sieve to restrain I3- crossover and prepare zeolite molecular sieve particles into compact, large-scale, and flexible membranes at the engineering level. The as-prepared membrane can confine I3- within the catholyte region and restrain its irreversible escape, which is proved via space-resolution and electrochemical in situ time-resolution Raman technologies. As a result, overcharge/self-discharge and Zn corrosion are effectively controlled by zeolite separator. After replacing the typically used glass fiber separator to a zeolite membrane, the CE of Zn-I2 battery improves from 78.9 to 98.6% at 0.2 A/g. Besides, after aging at the fully charged state for 5.0 h, self-discharge is restrained and CE is enhanced from 44.0 to 85.65%. Moreover, the Zn-I2 cell maintains 91.0% capacity over 30,000 cycles at 4.0 A/g.

Confining Iodine into Metal-Organic Framework Derived Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon for Long-Life Aqueous Zinc-Iodine Batteries

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (AZIBs) are highly appealing for energy requirements owing to their safety, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. However, the inadequate redox kinetics and severe shuttling effect of polyiodide ions impede their commercial viability. Herein, several Zn-MOF-derived porous carbon materials are designed, and the further preparation of iron-doped porous carbon (Fe-N-C, M9) with varied Fe doping contents is optimized based on a facile self-assembly/carbonization approach. M9, with atomic Fe coordinated to nitrogen atoms, is employed as an efficient cathode host for AZIBs. Functional modifications of porous carbon hosts involving the doping species and levels are investigated. The adsorption tests, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and in situ UV-vis results demonstrate the adsorption capability and charge-discharge mechanism for the iodine species. Furthermore, experimental findings and theoretical analyses have proven that the redox conversion of iodine is enhanced through a physicochemical confinement effect. This study offers basic principles for the strategic design of single-atom dispersed carbon as an iodine host for high-performance AZIBs. Flexible soft-pack battery and wearable microbattery applications also have implications for future long-life aqueous battery designs.

Abstract:The development of Zn‐I2 batteries has been restricted to the shuttle effect of polyiodides and the instability of the anode/electrolyte interface. Hence, a bifunctional self‐segregated electrolyte which synergistically addressed the issues was proposed. Batteries with the specific electrolyte exhibited superior electrochemical performance, illustrating the application prospect in energy storage. Static rechargeable zinc‐iodine (Zn‐I2) batteries are superior in safety, cost‐effectiveness, and sustainability, giving them great potential for large‐scale energy storage applications. However, the shuttle effect of polyiodides on the cathode and the unstable anode/electrolyte interface hinder the development of Zn‐I2 batteries. Herein, a self‐segregated biphasic electrolyte (SSBE) was proposed to synergistically address those issues. The strong interaction between polyiodides and the organic phase was demonstrated to limit the shuttle effect of polyiodides. Meanwhile, the hybridization of polar organic solvent in the inorganic phase modulated the bonding structure, as well as the effective weakening of water activity, optimizing the interface during zinc electroplating. As a result, the Zn‐I2 coin cells performed a capacity retention of nearly 100% after 4000 cycles at 2 mA cm−2. And a discharge capacity of 0.6 Ah with no degradation after 180 cycles was achieved in the pouch cell. A photovoltaic energy storage battery was further achieved and displayed a cumulative capacity of 5.85 Ah. The successfully designed energy storage device exhibits the application potential of Zn‐I2 batteries for stationary energy storage.

Abstract:Practical utilization of zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries is hindered by significant challenges, primarily stemming from the polyiodide shuttle effect on the cathode and dendrite growth on the anode. Herein, a feasible redox-active electrolyte has been introduced with tetraethylammonium iodide as an additive that simultaneously addresses the above mentioned challenges via polyiodide solidification on the cathode and the electrostatic shielding effect on the anode. The tetraethylammonium (TEA+) captures water-soluble polyiodide intermediates (I3 -, I5 -), forming a solid complex at the cathode, thereby suppressing capacity loss during charge/discharge. Furthermore, the TEA+ mitigates dendrite growth on the Zn anode via the electrostatic shielding effect, promoting uniform and compact Zn deposition at the anode. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell demonstrates superior cycling stability during Zn plating/stripping over 4,200 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. The Zn||NiNC full-cell exhibits a stable capacity retention of 98.4% after 20 000 cycles (>5 months) with near-unity Coulombic efficiency at 1 A g-1. The study provides novel insights for establishing a new direction for low-cost, sustainable, and long-lifespan Zn-I2 batteries.
