Abstract:Natural biopolymers are biodegradable and biocompatible and thus have huge potential for the development of biomedical or transient systems. Herein, we report an entirely starch-based hydrogel for flexible electronics including strain-sensitive batteries and self-powered (SP) wearable sensors. This biodegradable hydrogel is only based on natural high-amylose starch, CaCl2, and glycerol, and the preparation method is green and facile (namely, stirring at 70 °C for 1 h). This hydrogel is highly stretchable, flexible, reprocessable, and self-healable. Based on this hydrogel, we developed a galvanic cell-type Zn–Cu battery (composed of one starch-based hydrogel additionally incorporated with zinc powder and the other with CuCl2 and copper powder), which has a voltage of 0.81 V and its output current positively correlated with compression deformation. Based on this Zn–Cu battery, a self-powered (SP) wearable sensor was further constructed, which has a high sensitivity (1.5371 kPa–1) even under weak compression stress. This SP sensor can be used to detect human activities involving small strain such as wrist pulse and throat vibration, for which the signals are strong, clear, and stable. Considering the easy processability, cost-effectiveness, high strain sensitivity, robustness, and greenness of the starch-based hydrogel and electronics, their brilliant application prospect is foreseen.

Starch-Based Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors: A Review

Abstract:Natural green compounds for sensor modification (binders) are challenging in electrochemistry. Starch is a carbohydrate biopolymer that has been used extensively in the development of biomaterials for the food industry due to its ability to impart textural characteristics and provide gelling or film formation. In particular, the excellent film-forming characteristics have been used for the development of new surface modifying architectures for electrodes. Here, we highlight a very comprehensive overview of the properties of interest of various types of starch in conjunction with (bio)materials in the chemical modification of sensors and biosensors. Throughout the review, we first give an introduction to the extraction, applications, and properties of starches followed by an overview of the prospects and their possible applications in electrochemical sensors and biosensors. In this context, we discuss some important characteristics of starches and different strategies of their film formation with an emphasis on their role in the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors highlighting their main contributions to enhancing the performance of these devices and their applications in environmental and clinical samples.
Recent Progress on Three-dimensional Printing Processes to Fabricate Flexible Tactile Sensors

Abstract:Polymer-based flexible tactile sensors have been widely utilized in intelligent robotics, artificial prosthetics, human health monitoring, etc. The application of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to fabricate the flexible tactile sensors can overcome the shortcomings of traditional manufacturing processes, such as long term of fabrication and challenge of manufacturing the complex polymer-based microstructures. Therefore, the development of 3D printing process for polymer-based tactile sensors and electronic skin is the hot topic of research and will have broaden prospects. The sensing principles of the current flexible tactile sensors and their sensing performance requirements are described. Then, the recent progress of 3D printing technology for the fabricated flexible tactile sensors are presented, which including the tactile sensor’s structural design, classification and application of printable sensing materials, printing methods and processes. Finally, the development trend of 3D printed flexible tactile sensors are summarized. Also, the novel highly sensitive flexible material’s preparation and new printing process for the flexible tactile sensors are prospected. Further, the future development trends of 3D printed flexible tactile sensors are concluded.

Abstract:<p>Because stretchable strain sensors that have a resistance or capacitance sensitive to strain can sense skin deformation during physical movement, they have been extensively studied as wearable devices for healthcare monitoring. In principle, they can be used to monitor starch-based food processing in real time, since starch-based food can have remarkable volume change during processing. Monitoring starch-based food processing in real time can help achieve high quality and high productivity while reducing energy consumption. Nevertheless, there is no such report in the literature. Here, a blend of starch and a biocompatible intrinsically conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS), is reported as a stretchable strain sensor to monitor starch-based food processing including fermentation, steaming, storage, and refreshing in a real-time manner. The resistance of the blends increases during the food volume expansion mainly caused by the fermentation, steaming, and refreshing, and it decreases as a result of the food volume shrinkage during cooling or storage. The signals can be thus used to optimize the processing conditions and control the food quality. This technology can be easily combined with the Internet of Things.</p>

Abstract:This review delves into the sensing principles and structural innovations of conductive polymer strain sensors, and looks forward to their application potential in multiple fields and future research directions. Strain sensors that can convert physical deformation into electrical signals are of increasing importance amid the wider fever of the edge-cutting fields including soft robotics, human-machine interface, and wearable electronics. Yet, these more and more complex application scenarios call for a revolution of current strain sensing technologies. On top of their stretchability, more iodegradable and customizable, conductive polymer strain sensors enter the scene, showing promising prospects as next-generation strain sensors. Briefly, the sensing principles discussed include strain sensing controlled by tunneling effect, separation mechanism and crack propagation. Additionally, we explore three types of polymer strain sensor structures: filled (fiber-filled, carbon black-filled, nano-filled, and microporous-filled), sandwich (single-layer and multi-layer), and adsorption-type sensors. These sensors show great potential for applications in structural health monitoring, mechanical vibration detection, medical diagnosis, and environmental pollution monitoring. We also discuss the challenges faced by conductive polymer strain sensors and propose future research directions to address these issues. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of conductive polymer strain sensors and inspire further development in this promising research area.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel strain sensors have attracted great attention in various fields. However, most conductive hydrogels are rigid due to the polymerization of conductive polymers, which not only affects wearer comfort but also causes environmental concerns due to their non-biodegradable nature. To address these limitations, researchers have begun incorporating natural polymer compounds into hydrogels, including starch-based hydrogels. However, starch-based hydrogels hinder their applications due to their brittle fracture, poor freezing resistance, and insufficient electrical conductivity. Herein, a multi-functional, environmentally friendly, degradable starch-based conductive hydrogel was developed using a binary system of water and ethylene glycol (EG) as the solvents, starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the skeletons, calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) for conductivity, and gelatin and cellulose nanofibers to synergistically modify the physical cross-linked network. The hydrogel exhibited exceptional properties such as excellent stretchability (478.1%), high tensile strength (2.1 MPa), good toughness (3.7 MJ/m 3 ), and good conductivity (0.22 S/m), as well as excellent anti-freezing and recyclability. Leveraging these properties, a wearable strain and temperature sensor with high sensitivity (GF = 0.74) and cycle stability over a wide strain range was developed, enabling convenient monitoring of human movement and body temperature physiological signals.

Abstract:The use of natural fibers enables a green manufacturing pathway to design flexible strain sensors. The sensors based on commercialized natural fibers, including cotton, fibrilia, wool, silk, and their regenerated materials (viscose and silk fibroin), can be widely used in medical health, intelligent garment, and man‐machine interaction. It is of great significance to the high‐value utilization of natural fibers. Flexible strain sensors with outstanding stretchability and sensitivity can be widely used in medical health, smart robot, intelligent garment, man‐machine interaction, and other fields. The use of natural fibers enables a green manufacturing pathway to design strain sensors within the context of increasingly serious environmental pollution. Commercialized natural fibers, including cellulose fibers (cotton and fibrilia), protein fibers (wool and silk), and their regenerated materials (viscose and silk fibroin) exhibit low cost, easy acquisition, and degradability as the basis materials. This paper reviews the preparation methods, performances, and applications of flexible strain sensors based on these natural fibers. Cellulose and protein fibers are carbonized or coated with conductive nanomaterials to form the strain sensing network, and then, elastic polymers are used to improve the sensor strain range. Regenerated natural fiber materials can be uniformly mixed with conductive materials to form conductive composites for sensors. The strain‐sensing performances and mechanisms are analyzed and compared. Natural fiber‐based strain sensors are studied to pave the way for practical integration in electronic systems.

Abstract:In wearable electronics, to acquire stability and simultaneously preserve stretchability, sensitivity, and scalability is of high significance yet challenging for practical device applications. In this work, a kirigami-structured graphene-polymer hybrid nanocomposite is proposed for strain sensors by a laser direct writing technique on a polyimide sheet. Using such kirigami structures, the strain in the sensor material can be drastically reduced in the circumstances of high stretching conditions. To protect the device, ecoflex polymer is applied as the passivation layer. Depending on the applications, ecoflex grid-wrapped and film-encapsulated devices are realized with high stretchability (>200% strain) and sensitivity (>80% resistance change at 60% strain), respectively. Significantly, this sensor platform presents almost no performance degradation even after >60 000 stretching cycle tests due to less strain within the sensor. Furthermore, as proof-of-concept for human-interactive applications, motion detection and respiration monitoring with a breathing period of 3-4 s for a comparatively long duration (>2 hours) are successfully demonstrated. These facile, scalable, highly stable and stretchable strain sensors afford a new route towards next-generation reliable skin-inspired wearable electronics.

Abstract:Advances in stretchable and flexible sensors are responding to the emerging demand of wearable and portable smart electronics. A core component of these electronics are tactile sensing devices which detect external stimuli and obtain in-time information from the surroundings. A fusion of electronics, physics and materials science, tactile sensors have great potential in robots, biomedicine, flexible interactive devices, and several other applications. By integrating with a flexible polymer matrix conductive materials (nanometals, carbon nanomaterials, conducting polymers, etc.), which are either embedded in the matrix or surface-coated or sandwiched between films, the resulting conductive polymer-based composites are promising for flexible tactile sensors. This review summarizes recent advances across different types of tactile sensors, including piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric. Examples are highlighted on how the combination of new materials, unique structure designs, and novel fabrication methods can advance the progress of tactile sensors. Enhanced sensing performance and mechanical properties can be realized by integrating nanomaterials into polymer substrates. This review provides guidelines for further selection of polymer-based materials and design of tactile sensors.

Abstract:Flexible stretchable strain sensors have received tremendous attention due to their excellent performance and comfort. Material selection and structural design are considered the two essential factors for driving the development of flexible stretchable strain sensors. Due to natural biomaterials with numerous superiorities (such as unique structures, diverse chemical group, biodegradability, and environmental benignity) and biostructures with delicate and rational design principles, they have become new stars in the field of flexible stretchable strain sensors. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the state-of-the-art achievements in biomaterials and biostructures for the development of high-performance flexible stretchable strain sensors. According to the structural features of flexible stretchable strain sensors, the various roles and function of biomaterials are reviewed in detail, including as active materials, flexible substrates, and functional materials. Special attention is paid to the three most representative nature-inspired structural designs and optimization for flexible stretchable strain sensors, including crack, brick-and-mortar and wrinkled structures. The main challenges and future R&D directions for biomaterials-and biostructures- inspired flexible stretchable strain sensors are discussed. This comprehensive review and outlooks will enlighten readers to better understand the current development status and future research activities in using natural biomaterials and biostructures for the fabrication of flexible stretchable strain sensors.

Abstract:In order to replace nonrenewable resources and decrease electronic waste disposal, there is a rapidly rising demand for the utilization of reproducible and degradable biopolymers in flexible electronics. Natural biopolymers have many remarkable characteristics, including light weight, excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, low cost, etc. Thanks to these superior merits, natural functional biopolymers can be designed and optimized for the development of high-performance flexible electronic devices. Herein, we provide an insightful overview of the unique structures, properties and applications of biopolymers for electronic skins (e-skins) and flexible strain sensors. The relationships between properties and sensing performances of biopolymers-based sensors are also investigated. The functional design strategies and fabrication technologies for biopolymers-based flexible sensors are proposed. Furthermore, the research progresses of biopolymers-based sensors with various functions are described in detail. Finally, we provide some useful viewpoints and future prospects of developing biopolymers-based flexible sensors.

Abstract:With the recent great progress made in flexible and wearable electronic materials, the upcoming next generation of skin-mountable and implantable smart devices holds extensive potential applications for the lifestyle modifying, including personalized health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, soft robots, and implantable biomedical devices. As a core member within the wearable electronics family, flexible strain sensors play an essential role in the structure design and functional optimization. To further enhance the stretchability, flexibility, sensitivity, and electricity performances of the flexible strain sensors, enormous efforts have been done covering the materials design, manufacturing approaches and various applications. Thus, this review summarizes the latest advances in flexible strain sensors over recent years from the material, application, and manufacturing strategies. Firstly, the critical parameters measuring the performances of flexible strain sensors and materials development contains different flexible substrates, new nano- and hybrid- materials are introduced. Then, the developed working mechanisms, theoretical analysis, and computational simulation are presented. Next, based on different material design, diverse applications including human motion detection and health monitoring, soft robotics and human-machine interface, implantable devices, and biomedical applications are highlighted. Finally, synthesis consideration of the massive production industry of flexible strain sensors in the future; different fabrication approaches that are fully expected are classified and discussed.

Abstract:The emergence of wearable devices has spurred demand for strain sensors that are flexible, stretchable, and sensitive. Traditional strain sensors often lack stretchability due to the brittle nature of their materials. Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) are well-suited for this application due to their excellent flexibility, stretchability, and sensitivity, making them the material of choice for strain sensors. Resistive strain sensors, a common type of CPCs-based sensor, are favored for their cost-effectiveness, straightforward manufacturing process, and ease of signal collection. This review explores the sensing mechanisms of various resistive strain sensors, including percolation, crack propagation, contact resistance change and tunneling effect. It examines the impact of different fabrication processes and structural designs on sensor performance parameters including sensitivity, stretchability, linearity, and repeatability. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of integrating discrete sensors into high-density strain sensor arrays are discussed. Finally, we introduce the wide-ranging applications of CPCs-based strain sensors in multiple fields.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely used in wearable electronics due to their flexible, conductive and adjustable properties. With ever-growing demand for sustainable and biocompatible sensing materials, biopolymer-based hydrogels have drawn significant attention. Among them, starch-based hydrogels have a great potential for wearable electronics. However, it remains challenging to develop multifunctional starch-based hydrogels with high stretchability, good conductivity, excellent durability and high sensitivity. Herein, amylopectin and ionic liquid were introduced into a hydrophobic association hydrogel to endow it with versatility. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of amylopectin and ionic liquid, the hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties (the elongation of 2540 % with a Young's modulus of 12.0 kPa and a toughness of 1.3 MJ·m-3), self-recovery, good electrical properties (a conductivity of 1.8 S·m-1 and electrical self-healing), high sensitivity (gauge factor up to 26.85) and excellent durability (5850 cycles). The above properties of the hydrogel were closely correlated to its internal structure from hydrophobic association, H-bonding and electrostatic interaction, and can be regulated by changing the component contents. A wireless wearable sensor based on the hydrogel realized accurate and stable monitoring of joint motions and expression changes. This work demonstrates a kind of promising biopolymer-based materials as candidates for high-performance flexible wearable sensors.

Abstract:This work explores the development of starch‐based nanocomposites reinforced with MXene for sustainable electronics and multifunctional sensing. These biodegradable films exhibit remarkable mechanical and electrical properties, making them ideal for applications like body movement monitoring, tactile sensing, and handwriting recognition. Their rapid environmental degradation further highlights their potential as eco‐friendly alternatives to traditional electronic materials. Developing materials for electronics and sensing based on abundant and degradable materials is fundamental for transitioning both fields toward a more sustainable future. In the long run, this approach can unleash these fields from using petroleum‐derived and/or scarce resources, possibly facilitating electronic waste (e‐waste) management at the same time. Starch, one of the most abundant and versatile natural polymers, has shown great potential in the fabrication of degradable/transient devices. In this work, electrically conductive and mechanically robust starch‐Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites are successfully engineered, offering a promising advancement in sustainable electronics. The nanocomposite films exhibit remarkable tunability with varying MXene concentrations (from 0.69 to 2.42 vol%), allowing precise control over their properties. This tunability enables modifications in tensile strength (from 6.4 to 11.2 MPa), electrical conductivity (from 2.31 × 10−3 to 3.98 S m−1), and gauge factor. Such characteristics make these films ideal for various applications, including body movement monitoring, tactile sensing, handwriting recognition, and electronic smart skin. Unlike their petroleum‐based counterparts, the starch‐based films demonstrate significant biodegradability, breaking down within a month after being buried in soil. This rapid degradation highlights the potential of these transient composites for various electronics applications, offering an environmentally friendly alternative.

Abstract:Flexible sensing devices have attracted significant attention for various applications, such as medical devices, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. Numerous materials have been used to fabricate flexible sensing devices and improve their sensing performance in terms of their electrical and mechanical properties. Among the studied materials, conductive polymers are promising candidates for next-generation flexible, stretchable, and wearable electronic devices because of their outstanding characteristics, such as flexibility, light weight, and non-toxicity. Understanding the interesting properties of conductive polymers and the solution-based deposition processes and patterning technologies used for conductive polymer device fabrication is necessary to develop appropriate and highly effective flexible sensors. The present review provides scientific evidence for promising strategies for fabricating conductive polymer-based flexible sensors. Specifically, the outstanding nature of the structures, conductivity, and synthesis methods of some of the main conductive polymers are discussed. Furthermore, conventional and innovative technologies for preparing conductive polymer thin films in flexible sensors are identified and evaluated, as are the potential applications of these sensors in environmental and human health monitoring.

Abstract:Stretchable and flexible sensors attached onto the surface of the human body can perceive external stimuli, thus attracting extensive attention due to their lightweight, low modulus, low cost, high flexibility, and stretchability. Recently, a myriad of efforts have been devoted to improving the performance and functionality of wearable sensors. Herein, this review focuses on recent remarkable advancements in the development of flexible and stretchable sensors. Multifunction of these wearable sensors is realized by incorporating some desired features (e.g., self-healing, self-powering, linearity, and printing). Next, focusing on the characteristics of carbon nanomaterials, nanostructured metal, conductive polymer, or their hybrid composites, two major strategies (e.g., materials that stretch and structures that stretch) and diverse design approaches have been developed to achieve highly flexible and stretchable electrodes. Strain sensing performances of recently reported sensors indicate that the appropriate choice of geometric engineering as well as intrinsically stretchable materials is essential for high-performance strain sensing. Finally, some important directions and challenges of a fully sensor-integrated wearable platform are proposed to realize their potential applications for human motion monitoring and human-machine interfaces.
Anti-bacterial, anti-freezing starch/ionic liquid/PVA ion-conductive hydrogel with high performance for multi-stimulation sensitive responsive sensors

Abstract:The rapid development of the times has aroused the concern for the full usage of renewable resources and the sustainable development of the environment. Meanwhile, complex social activities have also put forward many requirements for sensor industry. Traditional hydrogel sensors are easy to lose water in daily environment and freeze at low temperatures, as well as being attacked by bacterial during repeated use, thus affecting the service life of the device, which are all problems to be solved by hydrogel flexible equipment. These urgent problems are crucial to the development of hydrogel flexible devices. In this work, starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is used as dual-network hydrogel substrate due to the advantages of renewable and biocompatibility. The internal compatibility of starch/PVA hydrogel is greatly improved by regulating the ratio of ionic liquid/ethylene glycol/water ternary solvent system. Multiple hydrogen bonding endows starch/ionic liquid/PVA ionic conductive hydrogel with high mechanical properties (tensile strain, modules and toughness of 1250.29 %, 1324.43 kPa, 9008.88 kJ m−3, respectively), and excellent anti-freezing (-128.9℃), anti-bacterial and electrical conductivity. The assembled hydrogel sensor could effectively detect external stimulations such as strain/pressure. It also has high sensitivity characteristics over an ultra-wide strain range (GF = 0.99 below 55 %, 2.19 at 55 %–250 %, 2.49 at 250 %–650 %, and 3.28 at 650 %–1000 %), as well as stably recognize human movements and physiological signals. All in all, this work brings new inspiration for low-cost, environmentally adaptable, sustainable wearable flexible devices.

Abstract:Fabrication of economical and eco-friendly flexible sensors is highly demanded in developing wearable biomedical devices. In this study, an eco-friendly strain and sweat sensor has been successfully assembled based on innovative composites consisting of carbon black (CB) and natural flour polymer, which are entirely green and biodegradable. A film-based sensing device has been developed to measure electrical resistance and strain simultaneously and continuously, owing to the highly sensitive resistance responsibility of the as-developed hybrid of CB and wheat flour (CB-dough). Furthermore, the influence of simulated sweat on the electric response of such sensor was also investigated. Repeatable relationships in resistance versus strain were revealed and obtained for varying samples with different content of simulated sweat, in which the amplitude of resistance was directly proportional to the concentration of NaCl. Accordingly, the as-developed CB-dough sensor was efficaciously used for durable surveillance of human activity and real-time feedback of sweat secretion during body motion. This work offers a simple and cost-effective way to manufacture flexible strain sensors, with a broad application prospect in wearable electronics, artificial intelligence systems, and other bio-sensors.
