Abstract:Protein function is a balance between activity and stability. However, the relevance of stability-activity trade-offs for protein evolution and their impact on organismal fitness have been difficult to determine. Previously, we have linked organismal survival at increasing temperatures to adaptive changes to a single protein sequence through allelic replacement of an essential gene, adenylate kinase (adk), in a thermophile. In vivo continuous evolution of the temperature-sensitive thermophile has shown that the first step toward increased organismal fitness is mutation of glutamine-199 to arginine in the mesophilic enzyme (AKsub Q199R). Here, we show that although substitution of Arg-199 did confer a modest increase in stability (0.6 kcal mol(-1)at 20 degrees C; DeltaT(m) = 3.0 degrees C), it is a large change in the activity profile of the enzyme that is responsible for its exceptional robustness during the earlier experimental evolution study. Kinetic studies of AKsub Q199R show that it has a strong loss of enzymatic activity (>50%) at lower temperatures (20-45 degrees C) and a subsequent increase at elevated temperatures. The stability-activity trade-off observed for AKsub Q199R was linked to the rigidification of the overall structure through stabilization of a polypeptide loop containing Arg-199 that is part of the ATP-binding site of the enzyme. Structural analysis revealed the formation of new ionic interactions facilitated by Arg-199. Our results suggest that stability-activity trade-offs are employed readily as an evolutionary strategy during natural selection to increase organismal fitness.

Abstract:Ischemic heart disease is the primary cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in both men and women. Strategies targeting traditional modifiable risk factors are essential – including hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus – particularly for atherosclerosis, but additionally for stroke, heart failure and some arrhythmias. However, challenges related to education, screening and equitable access to effective preventative therapies persist, and are particularly problematic for women around the globe and those from lower socioeconomic groups. The association of female-specific risk factors (e.g. premature menopause, gestational hypertension, small for gestational age births) with CVD provides a potential window for targeted prevention strategies. However, further evidence for specific effective screening and interventions is urgently required. In addition to population-level factors involved in increasing the risk of suffering a CVD event, efforts are leveraging the enormous potential of blood-based 'omics', improved imaging biomarkers and increasingly complex bioinformatic analytic approaches to strive toward more personalized early disease detection and personalized preventative therapies. These novel tactics may be particularly relevant for women in whom traditional risk factors perform poorly. Here we discuss established and emerging approaches for improving risk assessment, early disease detection and effective preventative strategies to reduce the mammoth burden of CVD in women.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for roughly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. Women in particular face significant disparities in their cardiovascular care when compared to men, both in the diagnosis and treatment of CVD. Sex differences exist in the prevalence and effect of cardiovascular risk factors. For example, women with history of traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, tobacco use, and diabetes carry a higher risk of major cardiovascular events and mortality when compared to men. These discrepancies in terms of the relative risk of CVD when traditional risk factors are present appear to explain some, but not all, of the observed differences among men and women. Sex-specific cardiovascular disease research—from identification, risk stratification, and treatment—has received increasing recognition in recent years, highlighting the current underestimated association between CVD and a woman's obstetric and reproductive history. In this comprehensive review, sex-specific risk factors unique to women including adverse pregnancy outcomes (APO), such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm delivery, and newborn size for gestational age, as well as premature menarche, menopause and vasomotor symptoms, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and infertility will be discussed in full detail and their association with CVD risk. Additional entities including spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), coronary microvascular disease (CMD), systemic autoimmune disorders, and mental and behavioral health will also be discussed in terms of their prevalence among women and their association with CVD. In this comprehensive review, we will also provide clinicians with a guide to address current knowledge gaps including implementation of a sex-specific patient questionnaire to allow for appropriate risk assessment, stratification, and prevention of CVD in women.

Pelvic osteotomy: an alternative to total hip replacement in the young adult.

Abstract:For the young adult patient with a painful hip in whom there is acetabular dysplasia, innominate osteotomy is not only an alternative to total hip replacement, but rather it is the procedure of choice. If the prerequisites for a Steel or a Chiari osteotomy are met and if the procedures are adequately carried out, satisfactory relief of pain and return to function can be expected. The length of the satisfactory result is unknown as yet because an insufficient number of patients have been followed over a long enough period to determine the life expectancy of these procedures. It would appear, however, that it is going to be more than 10 years, which is certainly longer than one could expect for the current generation of cemented total joint replacements to last. Cementless total joint replacements are so new that a comparison cannot be made, but intuitively, a procedure that can leave the patient with his own tissue is the procedure of choice. Certainly, in a well-executed Steel or Chiari osteotomy, later reconstruction or total joint replacement will not be compromised.

Abstract:Major risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) include hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome; all of which are considered inflammatory conditions. Women are disproportionately affected by inflammatory conditions, with sex differences emerging as early as adolescence. Hormonal fluctuations associated with reproductive events such as menarche, pregnancy and menopause, are hypothesized to promote a pro-inflammatory state in women. Moreover, women who have experienced inflammatory-type conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, have a cardiometabolic phenotype that pre-disposes to increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and coronary heart disease. Women with no notable CVD risk factors are often relatively protected from CVD pre-menopause; but overtake men in risk of major cardiovascular events when the cardiovascular protective effects of oestrogen begin to wane. Sex differences and female-specific factors have long been considered challenging to study and this has led to an underrepresentation of females in clinical trials and lack of female-specific data from pre-clinical studies. However, there is now a clear prerogative to include females at all stages of research, despite inherent complexities and potential variability in data. This review explores recent advancements in our understanding of CVD in women. We summarise the underlying factors unique to women that can promote CVD risk factors, ultimately contributing to CVD burden and the emerging therapies aimed to combat this.

Abstract:Age-standardised rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) are substantially higher in men than women. This explains why CVD has traditionally been seen as a “man’s problem”. However, CVD is the leading cause of death in women, worldwide, and is one of the most common causes of disability-adjusted life-years lost. In general, this is under-recognised and, in several ways, women are disadvantaged in terms of CVD. Both in primary and secondary prevention, there is evidence that women are undertreated, compared to men. Women often experience heart disease in a different way compared to men, and lack of recognition of this has been shown to have adverse consequences. Female patients of male cardiac physicians have been found to have worse outcomes than their male counterparts, with no such gender differential for female cardiologists. Clinical trials in CVD primarily recruit male patients, yet, it is well recognised that some drugs act differently in women and men. Diabetes and smoking, and perhaps other risk factors, confer a greater proportional excess cardiovascular risk to women than to men, whilst adverse pregnancies and factors concerned with the female reproductive cycle give women added vulnerability to CVD. However, women’s health research is skewed towards mother and child health, an area where, arguably, the greatest public health gains have already been made, and breast cancer. Hence there is a need to redefine what is meant by “women’s health” to encompass the whole lifecycle, with a stronger emphasis on CVD and other non-communicable diseases. Sex-specific analyses of research data should be the norm, whenever feasible.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading global health concern, and effective primary prevention strategies are essential to mitigate its impact. This comprehensive review examines current risk assessment strategies for primary prevention of CVD, emphasizing the importance of early identification and intervention to reduce disease incidence. Traditional risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, and lifestyle choices are discussed alongside emerging factors, including genetic predispositions and biomarkers. The review evaluates various risk assessment tools and models, such as the Framingham risk score, atherosclerotic CVD risk calculator, QRISK, and Reynolds risk score, highlighting their methodologies, strengths, and limitations. Additionally, the review explores lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes, physical activity, weight management, smoking cessation, and pharmacological interventions like statins and antihypertensives. Special considerations for different populations, including the elderly, women, and those with a family history of CVD, are addressed. Future directions in cardiovascular risk assessment are also discussed, focusing on technological advancements and personalized medicine. Primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases among women in a South Asian population: a descriptive study of modifiable risk factors

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was the assessment of modifiable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among women versus men at a newly developed preventive cardiology clinic of a large tertiary care cardiac centre in Pakistan. Design Observational study. Setting Tertiary care cardiac hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Participants Data for this study were obtained retrospectively from a prospectively collected ongoing registry. We have included all female and male individuals who have presented or were referred to our clinic for primary prevention. All the participants had no history of ischaemic heart disease. Outcome measure In this study, we evaluated the CVD risk factors, estimated risk of CVD, and glycaemic and cholesterol control at baseline and at subsequent follow-ups for high-risk patients. Results A total of 535 patients, 314 females, were included with a mean age of 48.3±12.5 years. At baseline, 57.9% (128) of men versus 73.2% (230) of women (p<0.001) were known cases of hypertension (HTN); 18.1% (40) vs 26.8% (84) (p=0.019) were diabetic; 40.5% (89) vs 9.2% (29) (p<0.001) were tobacco users; 26.0% (56) vs 3.2% (10) (p<0.001) were smokers; and 26.9% (57) vs 50.5% (153) had BMI ≥30 kg/m 2 , respectively. Baseline atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score was available for 348 (65%), 61.5% (136) of men versus 67.5% (212) of women. The median ASCVD risk score was 6.8% (2.8%–16.1%) vs 2.25% (1%–5.1%) (p<0.001 for men and women, respectively). The ASCVD risk score was ≥20% (high risk) for 22.1% (30) vs 1.9% (4), while the ASCVD risk score was <5% (low risk) for 40.4% (55) vs 74.1% (157) of men and women, respectively. A repeat ASCVD assessment at a median follow-up of 49.5 (7.0–231) days was available for 259 (48.4%) patients, 26.2% (58) of men vs 64% (201) of women, respectively. The median follow-up ASCVD score was 6.55% (2.8%–15.4%) vs 2.1% (0.9%–4.8%) (p<0.001 with ≥20% (high risk) in 19% (11) vs 2% (4) and <5% (low risk) in 34.5% (20) vs 77.1% (155) of men and women, respectively). Conclusion(s) There is a high prevalence of modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic CVD such as HTN, diabetes and obesity in women as compared with men, but interestingly, ASCVD risk score at the baseline as well as at the follow-up is high in men versus women. Some other non-modifiable risk factors like age, gender and blood lipid profile may also contribute to this difference between the high prevalence of risk factors and low ASCVD risk score in women. With appropriate follow-up and proper counselling, the looming CVD can be better prevented in this population. A dedicated preventive cardiology clinic for the identification of high-risk women and systematic follow-up is needed to predict their actual CVD risk. Trial registration NCT06503341.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD), and in particular coronary artery heart disease (CAHD), is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women. Until recently, most of our knowledge about the pathophysiology of CVD in women - and, subsequently, management guidelines - were based on studies conducted mostly in men. While similar mechanisms operate to induce CVD in women and men, gender-related differences exist in the anatomy and physiology of the myocardium, and sex hormones modify the course of disease in women. Women, more than men, have their initial manifestation of CAHD as angina pectoris; are likely to be referred for diagnostic tests at a more advanced stage of disease, and are less likely than men to have corrective invasive procedures. The overall morbidity and mortality following the initial ischaemic heart event is worse in women, and the case fatality rate is greater in women than in men. Also, the relative impact of impaired vasoreactivity of the coronary artery, increased viscosity of the blood and dysregulation of automaticity and arrhythmia, is greater in women than in men. The most effective means of decreasing the impact of CVD on women's health is by an active approach from childhood to proper principles of healthcare in order to modify the contribution of specific risk factors. The latter include obesity, abnormal plasma lipid profile, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cigarette smoking, sedentary lifestyle, increased blood viscosity, augmented platelet aggregability, stress and autonomic imbalance. The use of lipid-lowering drugs has not been adequately studied in women but reports from studies conducted mostly in men do predict an advantage also to women. Oestrogen deficiency after spontaneous or medically induced menopause is an important risk factor for CVD and CAHD. Observational and mechanistic data suggest a role for oestrogen replacement after menopause for primary, and possibly secondary, prevention of CVD. However, two recent prospective trials suggest that treatment de novo with hormone replacement of older post-menopausal women after an acute coronary event may not confer cardiovascular protection and may increase the risk of thromboembolic disease. Results of ongoing long-term studies may determine the beneficial role of hormone replacement versus potential risks involved with this treatment.

In 2021, 30% of deaths in women and 27% of deaths in men were attributable to CVD with worsening trends in regions of socioeconomic deprivation. In the past decades, it has become clear that there are clinically relevant sex and gender differences in several aspects of CVD from disease aetiology and diagnosis, to treatment, therapeutic response and prognosis.1 Several international initiatives have increased the awareness of sex differences in CVD and gender-related differences in care.2 Yet, translation to health policy and clinical guidelines has been limited in part due to the paucity of high-quality studies to inform such recommendations. [Cardiovascular risk factors and prevention in women: similarities and differences]

Abstract:Epidemiological evidence shows that among women, the incidence of all, including less severe, coronary events is still increasing. However, owing both to diminished lethality as well as the reduction in the rate of acute myocardial infarction, mortality has globally decreased. The strong association observed between mortality and major cardiovascular risk factors as well as between their temporal changes and the occurrence of coronary disease makes the undertaking of multifactorial prevention strategies, including the formulation of risk charts for asymptomatic women and men, necessary. The different "penetrance" of risk factors in women, together with their interaction with female hormones, plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular disease. The excess risk of cigarette smoking is 2-4 times higher in women than in men and the correlation with the number of cigarettes smoked daily is distinct. However, the risk starts to decrease immediately after stopping and after 3-5 years is similar to that of non-smokers. In women, the association between hypertension, coronary artery disease and early mortality is stronger than in men: there is no threshold below which the risk disappears. Diet and lifestyle strongly influence the development of hypertension. For this reason, the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines recommend adherence to a set of dietary and lifestyle habits including body weight control and physical activity. In particular, diet may modify the "penetrance" of risk factors in women: hence excess intake of saturated fatty acids associated with decreased cereals, fruit and vegetables does not only alter the lipid profile but also increases the risk of coronary disease. An elevated total/HDL cholesterol ratio and the presence of lipoprotein(a) constitute significant risk factors for coronary events. On the other hand, high HDL cholesterol levels (> 45 mg/dl) are considered to be protective in women. However, data on the efficacy of strategies aimed at reducing blood LDL levels in hypercholesterolemic women are limited and controversial. Pharmacological therapy is recommended in women with primary familial hypercholesterolemia and during menopause when the patient presents with two or more risk factors. Besides, pharmacological therapy is also indicated for women with a history of coronary artery disease in whom benefits exceed those observed in male patients with a similar clinical picture. In diabetic women, the risk of coronary mortality is increased 3 to 7-fold compared to the 2 to 3-fold increase observed in diabetic men. Diabetes definitely increases the effects of the other risk factors and modifies the protective effect by estrogens. However, to date, there is no evidence that keeping glucose levels within normal limits reduces the risk of coronary artery disease nor has a glycemic threshold capable of predicting mortality risk in diabetic women been established. For this reason, guidelines for such patients are aimed at keeping the other risk factors under strict control in order to significantly reduce their effect. Obesity results in a series of metabolic alterations that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in both sexes. Although most, if not all, data confirm that obesity alone is not of predictive value, central obesity constitutes a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. A body mass index < 24.9 kg/m2 and a waist circumference < 80 cm are recommended so as to decrease the likelihood of developing a menopausal insulin-resistance syndrome. It has been demonstrated that in men, a sedentary lifestyle is correlated with a higher cardiovascular and all-cause mortality; some recent observational studies suggest a 25-30% decrease in the mortality risk for women who perform physical exercise. Current guidelines recommend at least 30 min daily of dynamic moderately vigorous activity, including brisk walking. Rather than to the reduction in the serum levels of endogenous estrogens, the increase in the incidence of disease and of mortality following menopause should be attributed to the age-related modifications in risk factors which result in an increased risk of coronary artery disease. In spite of the proved detrimental effect of estrogen deficiency on LDL- and HDL-cholesterol, on arterial smooth muscle cell proliferation and on insulin secretion and in spite of the data of numerous observational studies and of the HERS trial (all, however, with methodological limitations), clinical evidence does not justify widespread estrogen prescription, not even for purposes of secondary prevention. Abstract:Despite significant progress in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and interventional strategies, cardiovascular disease (CVD), in particular ischaemic heart disease, remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women in the UK and worldwide. Women are underdiagnosed, undertreated and under-represented in clinical trials directed at management strategies for CVD, making their results less applicable to this subset. Women have additional sex-specific risk factors that put them at higher risk of future cardiovascular events. Psychosocial risk factors, socioeconomic deprivation and environmental factors have an augmented impact on women’s cardiovascular health, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to care that considers risk factors specifically related to female biology alongside the traditional risk factors. Importantly, in the UK, even in the context of a National Health Service, there exist significant regional variations in age-standardised mortality rates among patients with CVD. Given most CVDs are preventable, concerted efforts are necessary to address the unmet needs and ensure parity of care for women with CVD. The present consensus document, put together by the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS)’s affiliated societies, specifically portrays the current status on the sex-related differences in the diagnosis and treatment of each of the major CVD areas and proposes strategies to overcome the barriers in accessing diagnoses and treatments among women. This document aims at raising awareness of the scale of the current problem and hopes to stimulate a multifaceted approach to address sex disparities and enable future comprehensive sex- and gender-based research through collaboration across different affiliated societies within the BCS.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While it was previously believed that men have greater susceptibility to CVD, recent research suggests that women face an increased risk of CVD after the onset of menopause, primarily due to the loss of the protective effects of estrogens. Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and gestational factors, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), recurrent pregnancy loss, preterm delivery, and preeclampsia, are specific reproductive disorders that may contribute to an elevated risk of CVD at earlier ages, i.e., before the onset of menopause. This suggests that women with these conditions should be closely monitored for CVD risk factors even before reaching menopause. Such early intervention may help reduce the incidence of CVD and improve overall cardiovascular health in this population. The precise pathophysiological mechanism underlying the development of CVD in women with menopause, premature POI, PCOS, and gestational factors remains elusive. This review article seeks to elucidate the latest research on the relationship between these conditions and CVD in women, aiming to explore the underlying pathogenic mechanisms contributing to this association.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women remains understudied, under-recognized, underdiagnosed and undertreated. Initiatives such as the Lancet Women and Cardiovascular Disease Commission help to identify sex and gender-related gaps in research, care and outcomes and to guide next steps in addressing them. This article highlights important aspects of the Lancet Commission report and expands on the evidence and proposed strategies for reducing the global burden of CVD in women. Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of mortality and disease burden in women globally. A healthy diet is important for the prevention of CVD. Research has consistently favoured the Mediterranean diet as a cardio-protective diet. Several studies have evaluated associations between the Mediterranean diet and cardiovascular outcomes, including traditional risk factors like hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity. In addition, consistent evidence suggests that the components of the Mediterranean diet have a synergistic effect on cardiovascular risk due to its anti-inflammatory profile and microbiome effects. While the benefits of the Mediterranean diet are well-established, health advice and dietary guidelines have been built on largely male-dominant studies. Few studies have investigated the beneficial associations of the Mediterranean diet in sex-specific populations, including those with non-traditional risk factors that are specific to women, for instance polycystic ovarian syndrome and high-risk pregnancies, or more prevalent in women, such as chronic inflammatory diseases. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence regarding the Mediterranean diet in women in relation to cardiovascular health outcomes.

Awareness and Knowledge of Cardiovascular Diseases and Its Risk Factors Among Women of Reproductive Age: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women. Despite the significant burden of CVD, knowledge and awareness of its risk factors among women are low. This review aimed to identify CVD awareness, knowledge, and risk factors for women of reproductive age from different countries and variables that influence health outcomes. Studies published from 2000 to 2023 were reviewed using PubMed, ScienceDirect, Elsevier, and electronic databases. A total of 50 studies were found, and 41 were excluded. The keywords used were "Knowledge of the risk factor of heart disease," "cardiac risk factors," "cardiovascular disease," "heart disease awareness," and "heart disease," combined with "women" and "reproductive age." The review revealed significant gaps in the general awareness and knowledge of CVD risk factors among women of reproductive age. Many women were unaware of the symptoms and risk factors associated with CVD, leading to delayed diagnosis and poorer outcomes. Lack of education, low socioeconomic status, and limited access to healthcare were identified as contributing factors to this knowledge gap. Young women, particularly those with poor pregnancy outcomes, demonstrated limited awareness and perception of CVD risk. The findings suggest significant gaps in general awareness, knowledge of CVD risk, risk factors among women of reproductive age from different countries, and factors that influence their health outcomes. Targeted interventions are urgently needed to improve awareness and knowledge of CVD among women of reproductive age. Efforts should focus on educating women about CVD risk factors and prevention strategies before symptoms arise. Addressing socioeconomic and educational disparities is crucial to bridging the gap in awareness. By enhancing awareness and knowledge, women can be empowered to take preventive actions and reduce their risk of developing CVD. As a result, we recommend that there are significant opportunities to educate women about CVD risk and prevention before symptoms arise. In addition, there is a need to develop effective interventions to raise awareness among women of reproductive age to close the gap in awareness and knowledge of CVD.

Abstract:Purpose of review: The aim of this review was to discuss cardiometabolic risk factors that affect women. Recent findings: Recent calls to action to address cardiometabolic risk factors specific to women relate to increasing evidence of sex-specific differences in patient-related, drug-related, and socio-demographic factors leading to sub-optimal care of women. Summary: Certain aspects of common modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (e.g. smoking, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes) affect female individuals more adversely. Additionally, there are risk factors or enhancers that particularly affect cardiometabolic health in women [e.g. premature menopause, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), familial partial lipodystrophy, socio-cultural factors]. Understanding these risk factors may provide insight on how to improve cardiometabolic outcomes in women.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one cause of death worldwide. Women are at increased risk of death from CVD, but the mechanisms for how and why this occurs remain elusive. One subset of women who are exceptionally vulnerable to CVD are those with rheumatic diseases (RDs). Indeed, women account for 80% of all RDs, disorders that encompass a broad range of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases that lead to chronic inflammation and pathology. The clear association of increased CVD risk in women with RD is thought to be mediated by a number of factors, including RD pathology itself, pharmacological induction of CVD, and/or as yet unidentified mechanisms. As such, elucidation of the causes and treatments of these pathologies has given rise to a new subspecialty of cardiology: cardio-rheumatology. Here, we review and discuss the CVD risks in patients with RDs, the associated sex disparities in RD and CVD care, as well as the current therapeutic and interventional options available to specifically help women with RDs. We hope this discussion will provide guidance and support to patients, as well as to cardio-rheumatologists, as these groups are the most uniquely positioned to radically improve CVD care in these individuals. Moreover, we are hopeful this discussion may lead to better, more efficacious approaches to treating these disorders in women in the near future.

Abstract:: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in women.Some authors highlighted that the female risk profile consists of traditional and emerging risk factors. Despite the lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes, years of life lost owing to the disease for women are substantially higher compared with men. In addition, pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes represents a risk factor for CVD. Women with gestational diabetes have a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease that occur at a younger age and are independent of T2DM.Hypertension is an important cardiovascular risk factor in women. Estrogens and progesterone, known to have an impact on blood pressure levels, have also been proposed to be protective against sleep-disordered breathing. It is very difficult to understand whereas obstructive sleep apnea in women is independently associated with hypertension or if many confounders acting at different stages of the woman lifespan mediate this relation.The cardioprotective effect of physical activity in women of all ages is well known. Women are generally more physically inactive than men. During and after menopause, most women tend to reduce their physical activity levels and together with the reduction in basal metabolic rate, women experience loss of skeletal muscle mass with a negative change in the ratio of fat-to-lean mass.In conclusion, sex differences in the cardiovascular system are because of dissimilarities in gene expression and sex hormones; these result in variations in prevalence and presentation of CVD and associated conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and vascular and cardiac remodeling.Changes in lifestyle and increase in physical activity could help in prevention of cardiovascular disease in women.
