Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The existing approach of preparing hydrogen through electrocatalytic water splitting is hindered by several factors, including the scarcity of efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction that can function well under a variety of pH settings. The development of compounds with diverse active ingredients could contribute to the heterostructured electrocatalysts' ability to effectively react with a range of reactants. Moreover, assembling active species on a substrate to produce self-supported electrocatalysts can reduce the need for electricity. Here, we utilized nickel foam as the conductive substrate to produce heterostructured electrocatalysts with active species of ZnIn2S4, Ni2P, and NiS (denoted as ZnIn2S4/Ni2P/NiS@NF). The ZnIn2S4/Ni2P/NiS@NF only needs tiny overpotentials to drive high current densities and can be operated with long-term operational durability across a broad pH range.
Amorphous heterojunction and fluoride-induced effects enable F-Ni(OH)2/Ni-B electrocatalyst for efficient and stable alkaline freshwater/seawater hydrogen evolution at large-current-density

Abstract:Searching for efficient, robust, and cost-effective catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desirable but still challenging in the development of freshwater/seawater electrolysis to hydrogen as a viable energy conversion technology. Herein, a F-doped Ni(OH) 2 /Ni-B amorphous heterostructure (FNH/NB) was synthesized by simple hydrothermal, electroless plating, and alkaline etching methods. Our designed experiments demonstrate that the as-prepared catalyst benefited from the amorphous interfacial coupling and F-induced effects exhibits accelerated H 2 O dissociation kinetic and optimized adsorption of intermediates. As a result, the FNH/NB catalyst shows a high alkaline HER activity, only requiring a low overpotential of 23, 28, and 30 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater and simulated seawater, and real seawater, respectively. Particularly, the stability of the designed catalyst is effectively improved by fluorine doping strategy. Specifically, the FNH/NB could maintain excellent electrocatalytic performance over 50 hours at current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution containing KF. The current work reveals the superiority of integrating F-doping and amorphous heterostructure engineering in developing efficient and robust catalysts.

Abstract:Metal phosphides are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, their applications are hindered by the low electronic conductivity and sluggish HER kinetics in neutral electrolytes. Here we report an approach to significantly improving the HER performance of hierarchical iron phosphide (pFeP) modified with metallic iron (Fe) in neutral phosphate buffer electrolytes. It was observed that the presence of Fe can accelerate the charge transport kinetics. As a result, a significant improvement on the proton-acceptor (negatively charged P sites) and hydride-acceptor (coordinated Fe sites) were achieved, therefore promoting proton adsorption to the electrocatalyst surface during water electrolysis. Specifically, the Fe modified FeP electrocatalyst (pFe/FeP) displayed high HER catalytic rates (e.g., −100 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of −380 mV), low onset potential (50 mV), and excellent long-term stability for 40 h in neutral electrolyte. This study provides a new approach to the design and synthesis of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts with excellent performance for hydrogen production in neutral electrolytes.

Abstract:The combination of metallic Pt and NiTe‐Ns subtly modulates the electronic redistribution at their interface, improves the charge‐transfer kinetics, and enhances the performance of Pt/NiTe‐Ns catalysts. More charge transfer at the interfacial layer gives highly active Ni sites, improving the adsorption/desorption of key intermediates and accelerating the HER process. Exploring highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for large‐scale water electrolysis in the full potential of hydrogen (pH) range is highly desirable, but it remains a significant challenge. Herein, a simple pathway is proposed to synthesize a hybrid electrocatalyst by decorating small metallic platinum (Pt) nanosheets on a large nickel telluride nanosheet (termed as PtNs/NiTe‐Ns). The as‐prepared PtNs/NiTe‐Ns catalyst only requires overpotentials of 72, 162, and 65 mV to reach a high current density of 200 mA cm−2 in alkaline, neutral and acidic conditions, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that the combination of metallic Pt and NiTe‐Ns subtly modulates the electronic redistribution at their interface, improves the charge‐transfer kinetics, and enhances the performance of Ni active sites. The synergy between the Pt site and activated Ni site near the interface in PtNs/NiTe‐Ns promotes the sluggish water‐dissociation kinetics and optimizes the subsequent oxyhydrogen/hydrogen intermediates (OH*/H*) adsorption, accelerating the HER process. Additionally, the superhydrophilicity and superaerophobicity of PtNs/NiTe‐Ns facilitate the mass transfer process and ensure the rapid desorption of generated bubbles, significantly enhancing overall alkaline water/saline water/seawater electrolysis catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still a key challenge at the current stage. Herein, FeNi LDH/V2CTx/nickel foam (NF) self-supported bifunctional electrode was prepared via deposition of FeNi LDH on V2CTx/NF substrate by hydrothermal method. Strong interfacial interaction between V2CTx/NF and FeNi LDH effectively prevented the aggregation of FeNi LDH, thus exposing more catalytic active sites, which improved electrical conductivity of the nanohybrids and structural stability. The results indicated that the prepared FeNi LDH/V2CTx/NF required 222 mV and 151 mV overpotential for OER and HER in 1 M KOH to provide 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Besides, the FeNi LDH/V2CTx/NF electrocatalysts were applied to overall water splitting, which achieved a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at 1.74 V. This work provides ideas for improving the electrocatalytic performance of electrocatalysts through simple synthesis strategies, structural adjustment, use of conductive substrates and formation of hierarchical structures.

Abstract:The preparation of efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts with superior stability for water splitting is a topic of significant current interest for hydrogen generation. A facile strategy has been developed to fabricate highly active electrodes with hierarchical porous structures by using a two-step electrodeposition method, in which NiFe layered double hydroxide is grown in situ on a three-dimensional hierarchical Ni mesh (NiFe/Ni/Ni). The as-prepared NiFe/Ni/Ni electrodes demonstrate remarkable structural stability with high surface areas, effective gas transportation, and fast electron transfer. Benefiting from the unique structure, the self-supported NiFe/Ni/Ni electrodes exhibit overpotentials of 190 mV and 300 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm(-2), respectively. Furthermore, the self-supported NiFe/Ni/Ni electrodes also exhibit high performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and excellent stability at a current density of 500 mA cm(-2) for both OER and HER. Remarkably, using NiFe/Ni/Ni as both the cathode and anode for alkaline water electrolysis, a current density of 500 mA cm(-2) is attained at a cell voltage of 1.96 V. Additionally, the water electrolyzer demonstrates superior stability even at a large current density (500 mA cm(-2)) when subjected to high temperatures.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high efficiency for overall water splitting is still a challenging task. In this work, we introduce a novel one-step synthesis method for Pt/NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) on an iron-nickel foam (INF) substrate under mild conditions. This method eliminates the need for additional Ni or Fe ions and facilitates in-situ etching and growth processes under mild conditions, resulting in a higher active surface area, well-dispersed low-loading Pt nanoparticles, and a self-supported electrode without binders. These features collectively enhance electron transfer and catalytic activity for both HER and OER. The Pt/NiFe LDH/INF exhibits remarkable water splitting performance, requiring a cell voltage of only 1.44 V at10 mA cm −2 when used as both anode and cathode. Additionally, it remains stable at 20 mA cm −2 for at least 16 h. The exceptional water splitting activity of Pt/NiFe LDH/INF in alkaline solution can be attributed to the synergistic effects of Pt and NiFe LDH, which improve the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction efficiencies. The results provide valuable insights into designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with low Pt loading for optimal water splitting performance at low operating cost.

Abstract:It is crucial to develop cost-effective novel non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and durability for large-scale industrial hydrogen production via water splitting. Here, based on a facial powder metallurgy method, Ni3Fe intermetallic electrodes with porous structure and controllable phase has been designed and fabricated by sintering the mixed Ni and Fe powders under an Ar atmosphere. The effect of sintering temperature on the morphology, porous structure and phase composition of the intermetallic was studied. The resultant Ni3Fe-900 intermetallic electrode exhibits promising HER activity in alkaline electrolyte with an overpotential of 112 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Additionally, Ni3Fe-900 intermetallic electrode shows good alkali corrosion resistance and stability in HER process at a current density of as high as 500 mA cm-2 for 24 h with no significant changes of surface morphology, porous structure and phases. The efficient HER performance of Ni3Fe-900 electrode is attributed to the unique intrinsic activity of intermetallic, increased accessible active sites originated from porous structure and accelerated charge transfer. This work provides new insights into the design of electrocatalysts for industrial large-scale hydrogen production by water splitting.

Interfacial Synergy Between Dispersed Ru Sub-Nanoclusters and Porous NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide on Accelerated Overall Water Splitting by Intermediate Modulation

Abstract:Construction of an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst through a rational interface-engineering strategy to optimize the adsorption energy of H* and OH* species at the atomic/molecular level is of great importance for water splitting. Although conventional NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) shows excellent performance for alkaline oxygen evolution reactions (OERs), it shows extremely poor activity toward hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) due to weak hydrogen adsorption and sluggish kinetics. In this work, integration of sub-nanoscale Ru species with NiFe LDH can dramatically enhance the adsorption energy of H* and improve their HER kinetics. Besides, benefitting from the desired potential-induced strategy, the Ru-NiFe LDH interfaces will convert to RuO2-NiFe(OOH)x interfaces to optimize the adsorption energy of OH* to meet the requirement of strengthening the OER performance. Strikingly, the Ru-NiFe LDH-F/NF sample (NF: Ni foam) shows an excellent OER and HER performance with an overpotential of 230.0 mV and 115.6 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, respectively, as well as outstanding durability. The overall water splitting device was fabricated by using Ru/NiFe LDH-F/NF as both the HER and OER electrode with a potential of 1.53 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, the theoretical calculations demonstrated that the Ru-NiFe LDH interfaces could optimize the adsorption energy of H* and OH*. This study provides a new insight into the development of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.
Interfacial Engineering of Heterostructured Fe-Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2 Nanosheets with Tailored d-Band Center for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Catalysis

Abstract:Producing hydrogen by electrochemical water splitting suffers from the high kinetic barriers in the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that limits the overall efficiency. Herein, we report a structural and electronic engineering strategy through integrating the self-standing Fe doped Ni3S2 (denoted as Fe-Ni3S2) nanosheet arrays with Ni(OH)2 subunits to form a heterostructured Fe-Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2 on Ni Foam substrate. The strong electronic interaction between the Fe-Ni3S2 and Ni(OH)2 constituents contributes abundant catalytic sites and ensures the highly electron transfer. Moreover, the combined experimental and theoretical study revealed that the coupling of Ni(OH)2 onto the Fe-Ni3S2 is favorable to lower the activation energy of water oxidation for favorable OER kinetics, and upshift the Ni d-band center to facilitate the adsorption of O-containing intermediates. As a result, the optimized Fe-Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2 hybrid catalyst exhibits a excellent OER performance in alkaline electrolyte with an ultralow overpotential of 202 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 50.6 mV dec−1, and long-term durability under high current density (0.25 A cm−2) for up to 60 h without significant deactivation. Meanwhile, a two-electrode Fe-Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2∥Pt/C electrolyzer requires only a low voltage of 1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting. This work emphasizes the importance of interface and surface engineering to achieve highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts with earth-abundant elements for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the same electrolyte is incontrovertibly vital in water electrolysis. However, their large-scale fabrication remains a great challenge. Here, we report a self-supported electrocatalyst in the form of Fe-doped Ni3S2 nanoparticles in-situ grown on three-dimensional (3D) conductive Fe−Ni alloy foam (Fe−Ni3S2/AF) by surface-assisted chemical vapor transport (SACVT) method. Homogeneous growth environment and scalability of SACVT method allow Fe−Ni3S2 nanoparticles uniformly growing on AF in large-scale. Fe−Ni3S2/AF exhibits high activity and durability when act as HER catalyst and OER precatalyst in alkaline media. The HER and OER overpotential at 10 mA/cm2 is considerably small, only 75 and 267 mV, respectively. Moreover, the electrolyzer assembled by Fe−Ni3S2/AF for overall water splitting exhibits a low cell voltage and high durability in long-term test. Based on experiments and theoretical calculation, the significantly enhanced activity could be originated from the incorporation of Fe, which contributed to increase the electrochemical active surface area, enhance electrical conductivity, optimize the hydrogen and H2O adsorption energy of Ni3S2 (101) surface in HER, and form active bimetallic Ni−Fe(oxy)hydroxide in OER. The excellent durability of self-supported Fe−Ni3S2/AF could be benefited from the in-situ growth of Fe−Ni3S2 nanoparticles on 3D AF, which could ensure closely mechanical adhesion between active materials and substrate, promote charge transport and increase surface area. This work provides a facile method for large-scale synthesis of electrocatalysts with high activity and long-term durability for efficient water electrolysis in alkaline media.

Abstract:Developing low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts to accelerate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics is vital for water and carbon-dioxide electrolyzers. The fastest-known water oxidation catalyst, Ni(Fe)OxHy, usually produced through an electrochemical reconstruction of precatalysts under alkaline condition, has received substantial attention. However, the reconstruction in the reported catalysts usually leads to a limited active layer and poorly controlled Fe-activated sites. Here, we demonstrate a new electrochemistry-driven F-enabled surface-reconstruction strategy for converting the ultrathin NiFeOxFy nanosheets into an Fe-enriched Ni(Fe)OxHy phase. The activated electrocatalyst shows a low OER overpotential of 218 +/- 5 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a low Tafel slope of 31 +/- 4 mV dec(-1), which is among the best for NiFe-based OER electrocatalysts. Such superior performance is caused by the effective formation of the Fe-enriched Ni(Fe)OxHy active-phase that is identified by operando Raman spectroscopy and the substantially improved surface wettability and gas-bubble-releasing behavior.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts of the hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER and HOR) are of critical importance for the realization of future hydrogen economy. In order to make electrocatalysts economically competitive for large-scale applications, increasing attention has been devoted to developing noble metal-free HER and HOR electrocatalysts especially for alkaline electrolytes due to the promise of emerging hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we report that interface engineering of Ni 3 N and Ni results in a unique Ni 3 N/Ni electrocatalyst which exhibits exceptional HER/HOR activities in aqueous electrolytes. A systematic electrochemical study was carried out to investigate the superior hydrogen electrochemistry catalyzed by Ni 3 N/Ni, including nearly zero overpotential of catalytic onset, robust long-term durability, unity Faradaic efficiency, and excellent CO tolerance. Density functional theory computations were performed to aid the understanding of the electrochemical results and suggested that the real active sites are located at the interface between Ni 3 N and Ni.
Two-dimensional Hetero-nanostructured Electrocatalyst of Ni/NiFe-layered Double Oxide for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Abstract:High-performance, cost-effective and stable electrocatalysts are critical for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via water splitting in alkaline media. Herein a unique hetero-nanostructured Ni/NiFe-layered double oxide (Ni/NiFe-LDO) on Ni foam (NF) has been successfully constructed through phase-transition and controlled in-situ reduction process. Because the two-dimensional (2D) morphology of NiFe-LDO nanosheets can stabilize uniform in-situ formed nano-Ni sites, the prepared Ni/NiFe-LDO on NF displays a high catalytic activity for HER in 1.0 M KOH solution, which requires an extremely low overpotential of 29 mV to afford a current density at 10 mA cm(-2), achieves a Tafel slope of 82 mV dec(-1) and maintains an excellent stability of electrolysis for at least 24 h. Detail characterizations reveal that the synergistic effect between nano-Ni and NiFe-LDO nanosheets contributes to the prominent HER activity. In NiFe-LDO, Fe2O3 facilitates the adsorption of H2O on the interface region of Ni-Fe2O3, which is beneficial for water activation, then NiO offers the active sites for hydroxyl adsorption (*OH), meanwhile nano-Ni sites are active to adsorb hydrogen intermediates (H*). All of the above accelerates the water dissociation in Volmer-step reaction.

Abstract:Exploration of efficient and earth-abundant catalysts is critical to developing hydrogen energy through electrochemical overall water splitting. In this work, highly porous three-dimensional binder-free amorphous structure NiFeO/NiMo nanospheres are synthesized on Ni foam (NF) by simple and cost-effective two-step hydrothermal and electrodeposition processes, respectively. The first findings show that the porous NiFeO/NiMoO/NF electrode has good long-term stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water electrolysis and better catalytic activity (requires an overpotential of 46 mV to drive current density (j) of 10 mA cm −2 ). The excellent HER performance and reasonable stability of the amorphous NiFeO/NiMoO/NF electrocatalyst can be caused by the impact of intermediate coating (NiMoO) as a binder to the fabrication of the final catalyst, which enables a synergistic effect of metallic Ni, Fe, and Mo for efficient HER. Designing a multimetallic alloy represents a promising new route to developing efficient, low-cost noble-metal-free catalysts and their applications in the rising hydrogen revolution.

Abstract:An interfacial electrocatalyst system composed of Pt5P2 nanocrystals anchored on amorphous nickel phosphate nanorods is fabricated for an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. At the unique polycrystalline/amorphous interface with strong electronic interaction, water dissociation is accelerated over abundant oxophilic Ni sites of amorphous nickel phosphate, while hydride coupling is promoted on the adjacent electron‐rich Pt sites of Pt5P2 nanocrystals. Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is important for hydrogen economy but suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics due to a large water dissociation energy barrier. Herein, Pt5P2 nanocrystals anchoring on amorphous nickel phosphate nanorods as a high‐performance interfacial electrocatalyst system (Pt5P2 NCs/a‐NiPi) for the alkaline HER are demonstrated. At the unique polycrystalline/amorphous interface with abundant defects, strong electronic interaction, and optimized intermediate adsorption strength, water dissociation is accelerated over abundant oxophilic Ni sites of amorphous NiPi, while hydride coupling is promoted on the adjacent electron‐rich Pt sites of Pt5P2. Meanwhile, the ultra‐small‐sized Pt5P2 nanocrystals and amorphous NiPi nanorods maximize the density of interfacial active sites for the Volmer–Tafel reaction. Pt5P2 NCs/a‐NiPi exhibits small overpotentials of merely 9 and 41 mV at −10 and −100 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. Notably, Pt5P2 NCs/a‐NiPi exhibits an unprecedentedly high mass activity (MA) of 14.9 mA μgPt−1 at an overpotential of 70 mV, which is 80 times higher than that of Pt/C and represents the highest MA of reported Pt‐based electrocatalysts for the alkaline HER. This work demonstrates a phosphorization and interfacing strategy for promoting Pt utilization and in‐depth mechanistic insights for the alkaline HER.

Abstract:Summary Oxidation of ergosterol-28-C14 and of ergosterol-U-C14 by mitochondrial preparations from rat or mouse livers has been investigated. Either substrate yielded C14O2. Ergosterol-U-C14 yielded radioactive neutral and acidic products, while ergosterol-28-C14 gave only neutral radioactive material. Among the acidic products obtained from ergosterol-U-C14 was a radioactive acid with Rf close to that of trihydroxycoprostanic acid. Similarities between the oxidation of cholesterol and ergosterol by liver mitochondria in vitro suggest that enzyme systems involved are closely related to each other, if not identical.
Ternary Interfacial Superstructure Enabling Extraordinary Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Realizing large-scale electrochemical hydrogen evolution in alkaline and neutral media by robust and non-noble-metal heterogeneous catalysts is highly ambitious due to the sluggish reaction kinetics at low H+ conditions. Herein, highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, comprising Ni, NiO clusters, and defective carbon, are successfully constructed via a facile and large-scale route. Multiple synchrotron radiation-based X-ray spectroscopic characterizations, combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements, indicate the formation of ternary interfacial superstructure with intimate interfacial coupling through abundant Ni-O-C bonds. Impressively, the optimized catalyst loaded onto the usual glass carbon electrode exhibits exceptional catalytic activities with overpotentials of 64 and 76 mV to reach 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH and 1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively, representing one of the best non-noble-metal HER electrocatalysts to date. Insights into the metal/oxide interfacial effects through density functional theory calculations reveal that the interface sites could efficiently lower the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS), contributing to the fast reaction kinetics. This work not only provides comprehensive insights into interfacial feature of highly active HER catalysts but also broadens the fundamental understanding of interfacial effects toward HER catalysis.
