Abstract:To explore the specific effects of pig manure and rice straw on cadmium‐contaminated soils and the effect of different mass fractions of calcium carbonate on cadmium efficacy, a pot experiment was conducted with different rates of pig manure, rice straw, and calcium carbonate. The results showed that pig manure addition increased the soil humic acid/fulvic acid ratio, thereby reducing the available Cd. The addition of calcium carbonate increased the soil pH and reduced the available Cd. The addition of pig manure and calcium carbonate significantly reduced the Cd content of wheat grains by 51.96% and 45.95%, respectively, at 3% and 5% application rates. Rice straw application reduced the soil pH, improved the soil Cd availability, and increased the accumulation of Cd in wheat grains. Compared with that in the control, the grain biomass increased significantly with 3% pig manure and 3% rice straw application, and the grain biomass increased significantly, by 58.86% and 39.11%, and 93.3% and 75.08%, respectively, in 2020 and 2021. With the application of calcium carbonate, the grain biomass of wheat first decreased and then increased. Additionally, the grain biomass significantly increased by 26.36% and 71.22%, respectively, at the 5% calcium carbonate application rate. Therefore, high application rates of pig manure (3% and 5%) have potential application in the safe production of wheat in Cd‐contaminated soils.

Abstract:Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxides can be used to remediate Cd-polluted soils due to their excellent performance in heavy metal adsorption. However, their remediation capability is rather limited, and a higher content of available Mn and Fe in soils can reduce Cd accumulation in wheat plants due to the competitive absorption effect. In this study, goethite and cryptomelane were first respectively used to immobilize Cd in Cd-polluted weakly alkaline soils, and sodium citrate was then added to increase the content of available Mn and Fe content for further reduction of wheat Cd absorption. In the first season, the content of soil-available Cd and Cd in wheat plants significantly decreased when cryptomelane, goethite and their mixture were used as the remediation agents. Cryptomelane showed a better remediation effect, which could be attributed to its higher adsorption performance. The grain Cd content could be decreased from 0.35 mg kg-1 to 0.25 mg kg-1 when the content of cryptomelane was controlled at 0.5%. In the second season, when sodium citrate at 20 mmol kg-1 was further added to the soils with 0.5% cryptomelane treatment in the first season, the content of soil available Cd was increased by 14.8%, and the available Mn content was increased by 19.5%, leading to a lower Cd content in wheat grains (0.16 mg kg-1) probably due to the competitive absorption. This work provides a new strategy for the remediation of slightly Cd-polluted arable soils with safe and high-quality production of wheat.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination of arable soils seriously threatens the safety of food products and sustainable development of agriculture. Iron/manganese oxide-based amendments have been widely applied to remediate heavy metal polluted paddy soils. However, little is known about the performance and mechanism of single iron/manganese oxides and iron-manganese composite oxides in reducing Cd accumulation in wheat plants from dryland soils. Here, iron oxide (α-FeOOH), manganese oxide (δ-MnO 2 ) and iron-manganese composite oxides (birnessite and weakly crystalline iron oxide) were prepared and used the addition of 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.0% to decrease the Cd accumulation in wheat plants cultivated in weakly alkaline soil through pot experiments. The results showed that iron and manganese oxides could reduce the content of available Cd by transforming acid-extractable Cd to reducible Cd and improve the antagonistic effect of wheat rhizosphere Cd with Fe and Mn in weakly alkaline soils, thereby significantly reducing Cd accumulation in wheat plants. The amendment performance followed the order of manganese oxide > iron-manganese composite oxides > iron oxide. The application of 1.0% manganese oxide decreased the available Cd in soils from 0.41 to 0.21 mg kg −1 , and correspondingly decreased Cd content in wheat roots, straw and grains by 56.2%, 49.9% and 73.1%, respectively. More importantly, the Cd content in grains was decreased to below the limit set by the China's food safety standard (0.10 mg kg −1 ). The present work reveals the effect of Cd accumulation by iron and manganese oxides in wheat, and develops an efficient approach for amending Cd polluted weakly alkaline soils.

[Effects of Heavy Metal-immobilizing Bacteria on Reducing Wheat Uptake Cd by Regulation Soil Iron Oxides]

Abstract:Iron oxides are widely distributed in soils and have large specific surface areas and strong affinities with heavy metals, and thus play a significant role in the transformation of heavy metals in soils. Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria Bacillus megaterium N3, Serratia liquefaciens H12, and strain N3 combination with H12 on the absorption of Cd by ZM-3 (Triticum aestivum L.). The effects of different treatments on soil pH, iron oxide content, and relative abundance of iron oxide bacteria, clay particle mineral composition, and aggregates in wheat rhizosphere were also measured. The results showed that strains N3, H12, and N3+H12 significantly (P<0.05) increased the dry weight (36.5%-75.3%) of wheat grains, and significantly (P<0.05) decreased the content of Cd (30.2%-84.9%) in wheat grains. Furthermore, compared with the single application of strain N3 or H12, the application of strain N3 combined with H12 had a stronger ability to reduce the absorption of Cd by ZM-3. The results suggested that strain N3, combined with H12, decreased the uptake of Cd in wheat by:①increasing the pH (from 6.74 to 7.08) of wheat rhizosphere soil; ② increasing the Fe oxide (67.9%) and goethite contents of wheat rhizosphere soil; ③ increasing the relative abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria (Leptothrix spp. and Gallionella spp.), and ④ increasing the content of small particle size (<0.25 mm) aggregates. The results provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the use of heavy metal-immobilizing bacteria to repair farmland contaminated by heavy metals.

Abstract:Fe biofortification and Cd mitigation in rice is essential for human health, thus the effects of fertilization with Fe on Cd uptake and distribution in rice need to be comprehensively studied. In this study, we investigated the roles of root iron (Fe)/manganese (Mn) plaques, root cell wall, organic acid, and expressions of Cd-transport related genes in restricting Cd uptake and translocation. The rice plants were exposed to 1 μM CdCl2 with or without the addition of three doses of Fe at 5, 50, and 500 μM EDTA-Na2Fe. The results showed that increasing supply of Fe remarkably reduced Cd accumulation in the shoots, mainly because of inhibited translocation of Cd from roots to shoots. As compared to 5 μM Fe treatment, 500 μM Fe significantly increased the ionic soluble pectin (ISP) content and decreased citric acid (CA) in the roots, thereby providing more Cd-binding sites in the cell wall of roots and reducing the mobility of Cd in xylem. Plant Fe status-mediated CA act as the main chelator for Cd mobilization, rather than through decreasing the pH. However, the plants supplied with low Fe or excess Fe facilitated the uptake of Cd in rice roots, as low Fe up-regulated the expression of Cd-transport related genes and excess Fe enhanced Cd enrichment on the root by iron plaque. Importantly, soil fertilization with Fe strongly reduced Cd accumulation in rice grain. Thus, optimizing the soil environmental Fe could effectively reduce Cd accumulation in the shoots by immobilizing Cd in the roots.

Abstract:The remediation of cadmium (Cd)–contaminated soil has gained much attention recently because Cd in soil threatens human health through the food chain. Although tremendous progress has been made in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil in rice acid soil system, the mechanism and effects of Cd-contaminated soil remediation under these amendments in wheat weak alkaline soil are still limited. In this study, the remediation effect and related mechanism of Cd in weakly alkaline soil were carried out using zeolite, diatomite, and sodium bentonite as the main remediation components, supplemented by calcium dihydrogen phosphate and fulvic acid. The results of field experiments showed that the concentration of Cd reduced by 27.3 ~ 31.2% in rhizosphere soil and 34.3 ~ 54.2% in non-rhizosphere soil, and the maximum reduction rate of Cd concentration in wheat grain was 25.5%. The main factors affecting the concentration of Cd in wheat grains include the change in exchangeable Cd, the absorption capacity of wheat root, and the inhibitory effect on Cd transport from stem to grain in this paper. In general, this work provides a new potential management feasible pathway to alleviate the Cd toxicity of weakly alkaline soil and wheat grain.

Abstract:Several mineral nutrient elements of plants can reduce cadmium(Cd)availability in soil by precipitation and adsorption,and decrease Cd absorption of plants by the competition between Cd and plant nutrients for the same membrane transporters. Nutrient management is one of the most important agronomic practices for better crop growth. Accordingly,it is regarded as a low cost,short period and high efficient way to alleviate Cd accumulation in crops by proper management of nutrients and proper treatment of the interactions between Cd and plant nutrients.In addition,other agronomic measures and molecular plant breeding,which could modulate the interactions between Cd and plant nutrients,might also be two relatively inexpensive and effective strategies to minimize Cd contamination in crops.The main objective of this review is to highlight how the interactions between mineral nutrient elements and Cd affect the availability of Cd in soil,and the Cd absorption of plants.Examples include that the competition between Fe,Ca,Zn,Mn and Cd uptake by root can decrease Cd levels in plants,and iron supply prevents Cd uptake by inhibiting iron-regulated transporter 1 (IRT1) expression.The strategies of using these interactions to minimize Cd accumulation in the edible parts of crops were also focused in this review.For example,the application of P fertilizer can precipitate with Cd to reduce Cd uptake by plants.In addition,Si and Se fertilizer foliage application can decrease Cd translocation from roots to shoots in plants,thus reducing Cd accumulation in edible organs and improving food safety.
Iron and copper micronutrients influences cadmium accumulation in rice grains by altering its transport and allocation

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice paddy fields constitutes a serious health issue in some parts of China. Here we study the potential for remediation of Cd contaminated alkaline paddy soil with low iron (Fe) and high copper (Cu) background by altering the concentrations of Fe and Cu in the growing media, which has been only seldom considered. We assessed how these two micronutrients (Cu and Fe) affect the absorption and transport of Cd in rice. Adding Cu significantly increased rice biomass and grain yield by reducing root Cd influx and Cd upward transport which, consequently, lowered Cd concentrations in roots, culms and leaves. However, excessive Cu also promoted a relatively higher Cd allocation in grains, especially under Fe deficiency, likely because Cu significantly increased the proportion of bioavailable Cd in leaves. Contrastingly, Fe did not alleviate the toxic effects of Cd on rice growth and yield, but it significantly reduced Cd transfer towards grains, which might be attributed to a sharp decrease in the proportion of bioavailable Cd in leaves. Our results demonstrated that Cd remediation may be achieved through altering Fe and Cu inputs, such that Cd accumulation in rice grains is reduced.

Activation of p53 in tumor cells by inhibiting the interaction of MDM2 with p53 has therefore been the focus of a large effort in drug discovery. The modulation of protein-protein interactions, however, has historically been very difficult to achieve owing to the large surface area of interaction. In this article, we review the recent accomplishments in this area and our quest for a clinically viable MDM2 inhibitor.
Mitigating cadmium accumulation in dicotyledonous vegetables by iron fertilizer through inhibiting Fe transporter IRT1-mediated Cd uptake

Abstract:The solubility of cadmium (Cd) in soil and its transfer to plants are influenced by soil pH. While increasing soil pH reduces Cd solubility and accumulation in rice plants grown in acidic soils, its effect on Cd accumulation in vegetables remains inconclusive. Here, we investigated the impact of soil pH on Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous vegetables and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms. Soils collected from various locations were supplemented with varying quantities of lime to achieve soil pH values of around 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Raising soil pH from around 5.0 to 8.0 markedly decreased extractable Cd. However, increasing soil pH tended to promote shoot Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous vegetable species including lettuce, pakchoi, and Chinese cabbage, and the model dicotyledonous plant Arabidopsis thaliana . Conversely, soil pH increase resulted in a monotonic decrease in rice Cd accumulation. In our hydroponic experiments, we discovered that iron (Fe) deficiency substantially increased Cd uptake and accumulation in dicotyledonous plants but not in rice. Increasing soil pH reduced soil Fe availability and induced the Fe transporter gene IRT1 expression in dicotyledonous vegetables roots, which led to an increase in IRT1-mediated Cd uptake and subsequently increased Cd accumulation as soil pH increases. A comprehensive model incorporating extractable Cd and root IRT1 expression better explained Cd accumulation in vegetable shoots. The application of 50 mg/kg of Fe fertilizer in neutral or alkaline soils resulted in a significant reduction in Cd accumulation by 34–58% in dicotyledonous vegetables. These findings reveal that increasing soil pH has two opposite effects, decreasing soil Cd availability while promoting Cd uptake through IRT1 upregulation, reconciling the inconsistency in its effect on Cd accumulation in dicotyledonous plants. Our findings provide important insights for understanding the factors affecting Cd uptake in plants and offer a practical solution to mitigate Cd contamination in vegetables.

Abstract:Screening high-tolerant microorganisms to cadmium (Cd) and revealing their bio-obstruction mechanism could be significant for Cd regulation from farmland to the food chain. We examined the tolerance and bio-removal efficiency of Cd ions of two bacterial strains, Pseudomonas putida 23483 and Bacillus sp . GY16, and measured the accumulation of Cd ions in rice tissues and its different chemical forms in soil. The results showed that the two strains had high tolerance to Cd, but the removal efficiency was decreased successively with increasing Cd concentrations (0.05 to 5 mg kg −1 ). Cell-sorption accounted for the major proportion of Cd removal compared with excreta binding in both strains, which was conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics. At the subcellular level, Cd was mostly taken up by the cell mantle and cell wall, and only a small amount entered into the cytomembrane and cytoplasmic with time progressed (0 to 24 h) in each concentration. The cell mantle and cell wall sorption decreased with increasing Cd concentration, especially in the cytomembrane and cytoplasmic. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis verified that Cd ions were attached to the cell surface, and the functional groups of C-H, C-N, C=O, N-H, and O-H in the cell surface may participate in cell-sorption process tested by the FTIR analysis. Furthermore, inoculation of the two strains significantly decreased Cd accumulation in rice straw and grain but increased in the root, increased Cd enrichment ratio in root from soil, decreased Cd translocation ratio from root to straw and grain, and increased the Cd concentrations of Fe–Mn binding form and residual form in rhizosphere soil. This study highlights that the two strains mainly removed Cd ions in solution through biosorption and passivated soil Cd as Fe–Mn combined form ascribe to its characteristics of manganese-oxidizing, eventually achieving bio-obstruction of Cd from soil to rice grain.

Cadmium (Cd) Minimization and Zinc (Zn) Biofortification in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Grains by Spraying with the Foliar Zn Fertilizer in Cd-Contaminated Fields

Abstract:The foliar application of zinc (Zn) has been regarded as a practical and economical way to reduce grain cadmium (Cd) accumulation and enhance grain quality in crops. Herein, a two-year field experiment was carried out to examine the efficacy of different application rates of the foliar Zn fertilizer in Cd reduction and microelement biofortification in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grains. The results show that the T4 and T5 treatments, 500 and 250-fold dilution of the foliar Zn fertilizer, respectively, increased the grain yield to varying degrees in the two years. When compared with controls and based on the average of the two years’ results, spraying with the foliar Zn fertilizer remarkably decreased grain Cd concentrations (44.5%), Cd translocation from stem to grain (TFStem/Grain) (4.92%), the HRI values of Cd (45.5%), PA/Ca (27.8%), PA/Fe (21.4%) and PA/Mn (5.81%) under the T2 treatment (1000-fold dilution). Furthermore, the T2 treatment significantly increased the Zn (37.8%), Ca (48.9%), Fe (37.6%), Mn (14.8%) and total protein (7.92%) contents and the estimated Zn bioavailability (28.9%) in wheat grains after two years. All these findings suggest that the foliar Zn fertilizer holds considerable promise as a safe crop production technique and a means of mitigating “hidden hunger” in developing countries.

Abstract:Iron plaque is believed to be effective in reducing the accumulation of heavy metals in rice. In this work, a known soil-derived Mn(II)-oxidizing bacterium, LLDRA6, which represents the type strain of Providencia manganoxydans , was employed to investigate the feasibility of decreasing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice by promoting the formation of iron plaque on the root surface. Firstly, the Fe(II) oxidation ability of LLDRA6 was evaluated using various techniques including Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, phenanthroline photometry, and FeS gel-stabilized gradient assays. Subsequently, the formation of iron plaque on the root surface by LLDRA6 was investigated under hydroponic and pot conditions. Finally, Cd concentrations were examined in rice with and without iron plaque through pot and paddy-field tests. The results showed that LLDRA6 played an efficient role in the formation of iron plaque on seedling roots under hydroponic conditions, generating 44.87 and 36.72 g kg − 1 of iron plaque on the roots of Huazhan and TP309, respectively. In pot experiments, LLDRA6 produced iron plaque exclusively in the presence of Fe(II). Otherwise, it solely generated biofilm on the root surface. Together with Fe(II), LLDRA6 effectively reduced the concentrations of Cd in Huazhan roots, straws and grains by 25%, 46% and 44%, respectively. This combination also demonstrated a significant decrease in the Cd concentrations of TP309 roots, straws and grains by 20%, 52% and 44%, respectively. The data from the Cd translocation factor indicate that obstruction of Cd translocation by iron plaque predominantly occurred during the root-to-straw stage. In paddy-field tests, the Cd concentrations of grains harvested from the combination treatment of LLDRA6 and Fe(II) exhibited a decline ranging from 40 to 53%, which fell below the maximum acceptable value for Cd in rice grains (0.2 mg kg − 1 ) as per the China national standard for food security (GB2762-2017). Meanwhile, the relevant phenotypic traits regarding the yield were not adversely affected. These findings have demonstrated that LLDRA6 can impede the uptake of Cd by rice in Cd-contaminated soils through the formation of iron plaque on roots, thus providing a promising safe Cd-barrier for rice production.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious challenge in agricultural soils worldwide, resulting in Cd entering the food chain mainly through plant-based food and threatening human health. Minimizing Cd bioaccumulation in wheat is an important way to prevent Cd hazards to humans. Hydroponic and pot experiments were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the effects of zinc sulfate (ZnSO 4 ) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) on Cd uptake, translocation, subcellular distribution, cellular ultrastructure, and gene expression in two wheat genotypes that differ in grain Zn accumulation. Results showed that high-dose nZnO significantly reduced root Cd concentration (52.44%∼56.85%) in two wheats, in contrast to ZnSO 4 . The S216 exhibited higher tolerance to Cd compared to Z797. Importantly, Zn supplementation enhanced Cd sequestration into vacuoles and binding to cell walls, which conferred stability to ultracellular structures and photosynthetic apparatus. Down-regulation of influx transporter ( TaHMA2 and TaLCT1 ) and up-regulation of efflux transporters ( TaTM20 and TaHMA3 ) in Z797 might contribute to Zn-dependent alleviation of Cd toxicity and enhance its Cd tolerance. Down-regulation of ZIP transporters ( TaZIP3 , -5 , and -7 ) might contribute to an increase in root Zn concentration and inhibit Cd absorption. Additionally, soil Zn provided an effective strategy for the reduction of grain Cd concentrations in both wheats, with a reduction of 26%∼32% (high ZnSO 4 ) and 11%∼67% (high nZnO), respectively. Collectively, these findings provide new insights and perspectives on the mechanisms of Cd mitigation in wheats with different Zn fertilizers and demonstrate that the effect of nZnO in mitigating Cd stress is greater than that of ZnSO 4 fertilizers.

Abstract:This work has developed a new strategy of biogeochemical Fe(II) generators for activating microbial Fe(II) generation to immobilize Cd in soils through protons scavenging and coprecipitation. A new biochar modified magnetite (FeBC15) has been fabricated through a top-down method, with which microbial respiration can be stimulated in paddy soil. The FeBC15 exhibits a higher adsorption capacity for Cd than pristine magnetite (1.7 times). The results show that the available Cd can be reduced by 14.4% after adding FeBC15 compared to the control. More importantly, FeBC15 particles promote the conversion of MgCl2 - Cd to stable crystalline Fe/Al bound Cd under the incubation period. The enhanced pH and Fe(II) leads to a comparably lower Cd availability in soils than in pristine soils, which are supported by the enhanced relative abundance of Geobacter and Clostridium with the FeBC15 treatment (i.e. up to 7.44-7.68 × 109 copies/g soil). The Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) study indicates that FeBC15 can lower the replenish capacity of soils (i.e. KdL values of 0.2-3.6 mL/g) to soil pore waters and limit root absorption. Pot experiments demonstrate that this strategy can alleviate the rice Cd content by 38.4% (< 0.2 mg/kg). This work paves a new pathway for reducing Cd uptake in rice, enabling sustainable remediation of paddy soil.

Abstract:Cd pollution in arable soils has posed serious threats to food safety and human health. Mn oxides and Mn oxide-based materials have been widely applied to the removal of heavy metals for their high adsorption capacity, especially in water treatment. However, the performance and stability of Mn oxide-based materials and the underlying mechanism of Cd immobilization in upland soils remain unclear. Here, zeolite-supported Mn oxides were used as amendment to investigate their impact on the availability of soil Cd in wheat pot experiments. The decrease in soil available Cd content (by 44.3%) and increase in soil available Mn content (by 61.9%) significantly inhibited Cd accumulation in wheat plant tissues under the application of zeolite-supported Mn oxides. The exchangeable Cd was transformed to more stable fractionation of Fe-Mn oxide bound Cd, and the maximum decrease of Cd content in wheat grains, straw and roots reached 65.0%, 11.7% and 55.3%, respectively. Besides, zeolite-supported Mn oxides exhibited high chemical stability and stable Cd immobilization performance in two successive years of wheat pot experiments. These findings improve our understanding of Mn oxide-based materials for soil remediation and indicate that zeolite-supported Mn oxides have great potential for the remediation of Cd-contaminated alkaline upland soils.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) pollution in paddy soil seriously endangers food safety production. To investigate the effects and microbiological mechanisms of calcium-magnesium-phosphate (CMP) fertilizer application on Cd reduction in rice, field experiments were conducted in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. Compared with conventional compound fertilizer, CMP fertilizer treatments inhibited Cd uptake through plant roots, significantly decreasing Cd content in rice grains from 0.340 to 0.062 mg/kg. Soil pH and total Ca, Mg and P contents increased after CMP fertilizer application, resulting in a further decrease in soil available Cd content from 0.246 to 0.181 mg/kg. Specific extraction analysis recorded a decrease in both available Fe content and the ratio of nitrate to ammonium nitrogen, indicating that the soil Fe-N cycle was affected by the addition of CMP fertilizer. This finding was also recorded using soil bacterial community sequencing, with CMP fertilizer promoting the progress of nitrate-dependent Fe-oxidation driven by Thiobacillus (1.60-2.83%) and subsequent dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) driven by Ignavibacteriae (1.01-1.92%); Fe-reduction driven by Anaeromyxobacter (3.09-2.23%) was also inhibited. Our results indicate that CMP fertilizer application regulates the Fe-N coupling cycle driven by the soil microbial community to benefit remediation of Cd contaminated paddy soil.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a big challenge for managing food supply and safety around the world. Reduction of the bioaccumulation of cadmium (Cd) in wheat is an important way to minimize Cd hazards to human health. This study compared and highlighted the effects of soil and foliar applications of Zn on Cd accumulation and toxicity in cultivars with high Cd accumulation (high-Cd wheat) and low Cd accumulation (low-Cd wheat). Both foliar and soil Zn applications provided effective strategies for reducing wheat grain Cd concentrations in the high-Cd wheat by 26-49% and 25-52%, respectively, and these also significantly reduced the concentrations in wheat stems and leaves. Foliar and soil Zn applications significantly reduced Cd in leaves and stems of the low-Cd wheat but had no effects on grain Cd. Both soil and foliar Zn applications significantly alleviated Cd toxicity by regulation of Cd transport genes, as reflected by the increased grain yield and antioxidant enzyme activity in the wheat tissues. Gene expression in response to zinc application differed in the two wheat cultivars. Down-regulation of the influx transporter (TaNramp5) and upregulation of the efflux transporters (TaTM20 and TaHMA3) in the high-Cd wheat may have contributed to the Zn-dependent Cd alleviation and enhanced its tolerance to Cd toxicity. Additionally, foliar Zn applications down-regulated the leaf TaHMA2 expression that reduced root Cd translocation to shoots, while soil Zn applications down-regulated the root TaLCT1 expression, which contributed to the reduction of root Cd concentrations. Soil (99 kg ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O ha(-1)) and foliar (0.36 kg ZnSO4 center dot 7H(2)O ha(-1)) Zn applications can effectively decrease the Cd in grains and guarantee food safety and yield, simultaneously. Effects of biochars combined with ferrous sulfate and pig manure on the bioavailability of Cd and potential phytotoxicity for wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil

Abstract:Reducing the content of Cd in wheat grains is necessary for human health, especially in alkaline farmland in northern China where a large area of soils is heavily polluted with Cd. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of wheat straw biochar (WB) and maize straw biochar (MB) combined solely with ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) or combined with FeSO4 and pig manure (PFWB and PFMB) on Cd bioavailability in soil and the phytotoxicity of Cd in wheat in an alkaline contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of these treatments decreased the concentrations of CaCl2-extractable Cd by 32.8-60.5% and increased the soil organic matter by 36.8-106.7% compared with those of the control treatment. The acid-soluble fraction of Cd was decreased by 3.7-16.8% but the residual fraction was increased by 1.7-13.7%. Furthermore, the addition of WB and MB increased the soil pH by 0.29 and 0.16 units, respectively, while the other treatments decreased the soil pH by 0.16-0.37 units. The concentrations of Cd in different wheat tissues were decreased in amended soils, and these decreases were positively correlated with CaCl2-extractable Cd and the acid-soluble fraction of Cd. The ability to accumulate Cd was in the order of root>straw>grain. In addition, there was a downward trend in the bio-concentration and translocation factors under different amendments. The amendments of PFWB and PFMB had better efficiency in the immobilization of Cd in soil and the inhibition of Cd uptake of wheat than WB and MB. In addition, the treatments of PFWB and PFMB increased the wheat yield by 14.3-16.2%, and thus have a great application prospect based on the cost-benefit analysis.
