Abstract:In this work, microcapsules were developed by the complex coacervation of sodium caseinate and pectin as a carrier for saffron extract. Parameters such as Zeta potential, dynamic light scattering, and microscopic techniques were investigated for their influence on the formation of these complexes. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the reaction mechanism between the protein and tannic acid or saffron extract. The study revealed that core/shell and protein/polysaccharide (Pr/Ps) ratios play a role in the encapsulation efficiency (EE) and loading capacity (LC) of saffron extract, with EE and LC ranging from 48.36 to 89.38% and 1.14 to 5.55%, respectively. Thermal gravimetric analysis revealed that the degradation temperature of saffron increased significantly with microencapsulation. The use of tannic acid for hardening the microcapsules led to an increase in size from 13 μm to 27 μm. Rheological findings indicated that shear-thinning behavior in the coacervates, with cross-linking, has a minor effect on the interconnected elastic gel structures. However, cross-linking improved the microcapsules' thermal and structural properties. The increase in polymer chain length due to cross-linking and the presence of the guest molecule (saffron extract) resulted in higher rheological moduli, reflecting enhanced entanglements and correlating well with the thermal, structural, and microstructural properties of the coacervates. Kinetic release studies showed a slower release in the gastric phase compared to the intestinal phase, with the Ritger–Peppas model effectively describing saffron extract release, highlighting a dominant swelling and dissolution release mechanism. Therefore, the NaCas/HMP coacervate wall materials made saffron stable in the gastric stage and sustainably release. It in the intestinal stage, promoting excellent absorption of saffron in simulated digestion.

Preparation, characterization and in vitro release of zein-pectin capsules for target delivery.

Abstract:Targeted drug delivery has been the interest of many researchers to improve drug efficiency and reduce side effects. Because of the potential toxicity and contamination problems of the current gelatin capsules, plant derived materials are selected for the developments of capsules for drug delivery systems. The objective of this work is to develop a target drug delivery system using zein and pectin. Different ratios of zein and pectin were used to achieve target delivery in stomach and small intestine. Zein-pectin capsule for colon-specific delivery was also developed. In vitro performance of zein-pectin capsules was examined and their structural morphology was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chemical interactions between zein and pectin were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy equipped with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR). Zein and pectin formed complex by hydrogen bonding. The swelling behavior of pectin was suppressed by zein in the zein-pectin interacted complex. By adjusting the ratio of zein to pectin, the drug release from the capsule in simulated gastric solution for 2 hours can be controlled in the range of 0% to 38%. Zein-pectin capsule for colon-specific delivery had no release in gastric and intestinal solutions while gradual release from zein-pectin capsule was observed in colonic solution, finally reaching about 80% release. Zein-pectin capsule has a potential in developing targeted drug delivery system.
Encapsulation and Release of Curcumin with the Mixture of Porous Rice Starch and Xanthan Gum

Abstract:The porous rice starch (PS) and Xanthan gum (XG) are mixed at different ratios to embed the curcumin. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the microcapsules are characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR); the release of curcumin is evaluated with a simulated gastric-small intestine model. Results indicate that all the microcapsules present high encapsulation efficiency (>90%) with an average particle size of around 3.30 mu m. The curcumin loaded in PS and PS/XG microcapsules forms inclusion complexes rather than simple physical mixtures. The release mechanism of curcumin from microcapsules fits first-order (R-2> 0.974) and Higuchi (R-2> 0.969) models well in gastric and intestinal models, respectively, indicating that encapsulation of curcumin within PS/XG enables controlled release of curcumin. PS/XG wall materials show great potential for encapsulation and delivery of curcumin.

Abstract:“Micelle-enhanced” polyelectrolyte capsules were fabricated via a layer-by-layer technique, templated on hybrid calcium carbonate particles with built-in polymeric micelles based on polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid). Due to the presence of a large number of negatively charged micelles inside the polyelectrolyte capsule, which were liberated from templates, the capsule wall was reconstructed and had properties different to those of conventional polyelectrolyte capsules. This type of capsule could selectively entrap positively charged water-soluble substances. The encapsulation efficiency of positively charged substances was dependent on their molecular weight or size. For some positively charged compounds, such as rhodamine B and lysozyme, the concentration in the capsules was orders of magnitude higher than that in the incubation solution. In addition, in vitro release study suggested that the encapsulated compounds could be released through a sustained manner to a certain degree. All these results point to the fact that these capsules might be used as novel delivery systems for some water-soluble compounds.
Construction of a pectin/sodium alginate composite hydrogel delivery system for improving the bioaccessibility of phycocyanin

Abstract:In this study, different concentrations of sodium alginate were compounded with pectin and phycocyanin to co-prepare composite hydrogel spheres (HP-PC-SA 0.2 %, 0.6 %, 1.0 %, 1.4 %) to evaluate the potential of the composite hydrogel spheres for the application as phycocyanin delivery carriers. The hydrogel spheres' physicochemical properties and bioaccessibility were assessed through scanning electron microscopy, textural analysis, drug-carrying properties evaluation, and in vitro and in vivo controlled release analysis in the gastrointestinal environment. Results indicated that higher sodium alginate concentrations led to smaller pore sizes and denser networks on the surface of hydrogel spheres. The textural properties of hydrogel spheres improved, and their water-holding capacity increased from 93.01 % to 97.97 %. The HP-PC-SA (1.0 %) formulation achieved the highest encapsulation rate and drug loading capacity, at 96.87 % and 6.22 %, respectively. Within the gastrointestinal tract, the composite hydrogel's structure significantly enhanced and protected the phycocyanin's digestibility, achieving a bioaccessibility of up to 88.03 %. In conclusion, our findings offer new insights into improving functionality and the effective use of phycocyanin via pectin-based hydrogel spheres.
Enhanced Water Solubility, Antioxidant Activity, and Oral Absorption of Hesperetin by D-α-tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate and Phosphatidylcholine

Abstract:Hesperetin, an abundant bioactive component of citrus fruits, is poorly water-soluble, resulting in low oral bioavailability. We developed new formulations to improve the water solubility, antioxidant activity, and oral absorption of hesperetin. Two nano-based formulations were developed, namely hesperetin-TPGS (D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate) micelles and hesperetin-phosphatidylcholine (PC) complexes. These two formulations were prepared by a simple technique called solvent dispersion, using US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved excipients for drugs. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the formulations’ physical properties. Cytotoxicity analysis, cellular antioxidant activity assay, and a pharmacokinetic study were performed to evaluate the biological properties of these two formulations. The final weight ratios of both hesperetin to TPGS and hesperetin to PC were 1:12 based on their water solubility, which increased to 21.5- and 20.7-fold, respectively. The hesperetin-TPGS micelles had a small particle size of 26.19 nm, whereas the hesperetin-PC complexes exhibited a larger particle size of 219.15 nm. In addition, the cellular antioxidant activity assay indicated that both hesperetin-TPGS micelles and hesperetin-PC complexes increased the antioxidant activity of hesperetin to 4.2- and 3.9-fold, respectively. Importantly, the in vivo oral absorption study on rats indicated that the micelles and complexes significantly increased the peak plasma concentration (Cmax) from 2.64 μg/mL to 20.67 and 33.09 μg/mL and also increased the area under the concentration–time curve of hesperetin after oral administration to 16.2- and 18.0-fold, respectively. The micelles and complexes increased the solubility and remarkably improved the in vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo oral absorption of hesperetin, indicating these formulations’ potential applications in drugs and healthcare products.
Zein-pectin composite nanoparticles as an efficient hyperoside delivery system: Fabrication, characterization, and in vitro release property

Abstract:Hyperoside (Hyp) exhibits a range of bioactive properties, but its application is restrained due to its poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability. In this study, a novel Hyp delivery system based on zein and pectin was prepared by an anti-solvent precipitation method to delivery of Hyp. The results showed that 91% optimized encapsulation efficiency of Hyp-zein/pectin composite nanoparticles (Hyp-Z/P NPs). Hyp-Z/P NPs formed core-shell spherical structures with a particle size of 270 nm and zeta potential of −32.4 mV. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic effects were the main forces driving the formation of Hyp-Z/P NPs. X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that Hyp was encapsulated in an amorphous form. Freeze-dried Hyp-Z/P NPs displayed good redispersibility in aqueous solution. The DPPH• scavenging ability and ABTS•+ scavenging ability of Hyp-Z/P NPs were 3-fold and 1.8-fold higher than that of free Hyp, respectively. Furthermore, compared to Hyp-loaded zein nanoparticles, Hyp-Z/P NPs showed better stability and sustained release of Hyp under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Therefore, Hyp-Z/P NPs can be used as an effective oral delivery system for Hyp, which may be particularly useful for expanding the applications of Hyp in functional foods, beverages, and pharmaceutical products.
Enabling direct dense encapsulation of water-insoluble powder in hydrogel microcapsules by bubble-assisted encapsulation method

Abstract:Encapsulating powder ingredients into hydrogel with programmable release ability is highly demanded in many fields including food engineering, medical and healthcare fields. However, directly adding water-insoluble powders into pre-gel solution makes the mixture susceptible to clogging problems during processing, thus limiting the loading rate. To address this problem, a new way to encapsulate water-insoluble powder ingredients without addition of any organic solvent named bubble-assisted encapsulation method is developed in this study. The powders were firstly encapsulated in hydrogel bubbles and further dispersed by T-shaped microfluidic flow to form the core/shell-structured powder in hydrogel microcapsules (P/H microcapsules). The obtained P/H microcapsules had an exceptionally high loading rate of water-insoluble powders up to 94.76%. The P/H microcapsules were freeze-dried for long-term storage, and meanwhile, the as-prepared microcapsules were able to swell rapidly to soft state before use. Moreover, with the well-defined core–shell structure, the P/H microcapsules were endowed with dual release capabilities to external stimuli. The bubble-assisted encapsulation method that enables direct dense encapsulation of powder ingredients at a high loading rate appears promising for water-insoluble food or pharmaceutical ingredients delivery.

Abstract:Natural polysaccharides derived from medicinal plants, that are Dendrobium (DPS), Lycium barbarum (LBP), Ginseng (GPS), and Poria Cocos (PCP) were firstly combined with sodium alginate (SA) to construct microcapsules and improved the morphology, encapsulation efficiency, Biocompatibility and protective capability in drug loading. Diverse typical therapeutics, including VO 2 @ZIF67 nanoparticles, small molecule drugs salvianolic acid B (SaB)/ginsenoside (Rg1), probiotic Bacillus bifidus , and biomacromolecules SDF-1 were wrapped into 1.5 % GPS-0.5 % SA model microcapsules, respectively. Better mobility and formability were significantly observed, and showed 75 % survival rate of probiotics in simulated gastric juice and around 99 % encapsulation efficiency which is higher than single 2 % SA microcapsules. The microcapsules also obtained a delayed release and a higher cell index for SDF-1, which indicated better stability, biocompatibility and protective effect than single 2 % SA microcapsules. This study provides a strategy in developing plant derived polysaccharides as novel materials for the construction and improvement of traditional microcapsules.

Building a polysaccharide hydrogel capsule delivery system for control release of ibuprofen

Abstract:Development of a delivery system which can effectively carry hydrophobic drugs and have pH response is becoming necessary. Here we demonstrate that through preparation of β-cyclodextrin polymer (β-CDP), a hydrophobic drug molecule of ibuprofen (IBU) was incorporated into our prepared β-CDP inner cavities, aiming to improve the poor water solubility of IBU. A core-shell capsule structure has been designed for achieving the drug pH targeted and sustained release. This delivery system was built with polysaccharide polymer of Sodium alginate (SA), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) by physical cross-linking. The drug pH-response control release is this hydrogel system's chief merit, which has potential value for synthesizing enteric capsule. Besides, due to our simple preparing strategy, optimal conditions can be readily determined and the synthesis process can be accurately controlled, leading to consistent and reproducible hydrogel capsules. In addition, phase-solubility method was used to investigate the solubilization effect of IBU by β-CDP. SEM was used to prove the forming of core and shell structure. FT-IR and 1H-NMR were also used to perform structural characteristics. By the technique of UV determination, the pH targeted and sustained release study were also performed. The results have proved that our prepared polysaccharide hydrogel capsule delivery system has potential applications as oral drugs delivery in the field of biomedical materials.

Abstract:It is an appropriate strategy to construct the carrier material with polysaccharide pectin, which is the characteristics of good bio-compatible, safe and non-toxic, avoiding the functional loss of bioactive ingredients and achieve sustained release. However, the loading mechanism of the active ingredient and the release behaviour of the active ingredient from the carrier material is still at the stage of conjecture. In this study, a kind of synephrine-loaded calcium pectinate beads (SCPB) with high encapsulation efficiency (95.6 %), loading capacity (11.5 %) and excellent controlled release behaviour was constructed. The interaction between synephrine (SYN) and quaternary ammonium fructus aurantii immaturus pectin (QFAIP) was revealed by FTIR, NMR and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. An inter-molecular hydrogen bond and Van der Waals forces between 7-OH, 11-OH and 10-NH of SYN and -OH, -C=O and N + (CH 3 ) 3 of QFAIP were formed. The release experiment in vitro showed that the QFAIP could effectively avoid the release of SYN in gastric fluid, and also realized the slow and full release of SYN in intestinal tract. Moreover, the release mechanism of SCPB in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) was Fickian diffusion, while in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) was a non-Fickian diffusion controlled by both diffusion and skeleton dissolution.

Characterization and stability investigation of rhein encapsulated microcapsules using different enteric biopolymers with pullulan and Jiuzao glutelin conjugates via Maillard reaction

Abstract:The poor water solubility and rhein (RH) stability limit its application in the functional food industry. In the present study, the RH-loaded water-in-oil-in-water nano emulsion and microcapsules were prepared using the conjugates of pullulan-Jiuzao glutelin (JG) (m/m, 2:1, PJC-2) obtained by Maillard reaction and enteric-soluble materials (polymethlacrylic acid, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate, cellulose acetate phthalate, and D-mannitol). The effects of different formulations on the microstructure, physicochemical properties, and storage stability of microcapsules were analyzed. The results showed that microcapsules exhibited stability against different external environments. The encapsulation efficiency of RH in the four enteric-soluble-PJC-2 double-deck microcapsules (70.03 ± 3.24%-91.08 ± 4.78%) was significantly improved than PJC-2 ones (61.84 ± 0.47%). The antioxidant activity and stability of RH in the microcapsules were improved (ABTS, 49.7%-113.93%; DPPH, 40.85%-101.82%; FRA, 62.32%-126.42%; and FCA, 70.58%-147.20%) after in vitro simulated digestion and extreme environmental conditions compared to free RH. This work provides a microcapsule based on PJC-2 with enteric-soluble materials for insoluble functional ingredients to improve solubility, stability, and bioactivity in the food industry.

Abstract:Dihydromyricetin (DMY) is a lipophilic nutrient with various potential health benefits; however, its poor storage stability and low solubility and bioavailability limit its applications. This study aims to encapsulate DMY in microcapsules by membrane emulsification and freeze-drying methods to overcome these issues. Glyceryl monostearate (GMS, solid lipid) and octyl and decyl glycerate (ODO, liquid lipid) were applied as the inner cores. Whey protein and xanthan gum (XG) were used as wall materials. The prepared microcapsules had an irregular blocky aggregated structure with rough surfaces. All the microcapsules had a DMY loading of 0.85 %–1.1 % and encapsulation efficiency (EE) >85 %. GMS and XG increased the DMY loading and EE. The addition of GMS and an increased XG concentration led to a decrease in the rehydration rate. The in vitro release and digestion studies revealed that GMS and XG controlled the release and digestion of DMY. The chemical stability results indicated that GMS and XG protected DMY against oxidation. An antioxidant capacity study showed that GMS and XG helped DMY in the microcapsules exert antioxidant effects. This research study provides a platform for designing microcapsules with good stability and high bioavailability to deliver lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Pectin-chitosan Conjugated Nanoliposome As a Promising Delivery System for Neohesperidin: Characterization, Release Behavior, Cellular Uptake, and Antioxidant Property

Abstract:Neohesperidin (NH) is a flavanone glycoside compound possessing diverse biological activities. However, NH is unstable in physiological condition and poorly soluble in water, and thereby it may show limited bioavailability. The aim of the present study was to facilitate the controlled delivery of NH in simulated gastrointestinal (GI) tract with enhanced cellular uptake using biopolymer conjugation onto nanoliposome (NL). The carrier systems were characterized by dynamic light scattering, HPLC analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The biological activity was analyzed by in vitro antioxidant activity, rhodamine (Rh123)-assisted cellular uptake, and acrylamide (AA)-induced ROS model on Caco-2 cells. The results confirmed the size of nanocarriers fall in the range of 87-225 nm, well-encapsulation of NH, and conjugation of chitosan (CH) and pectin (P). In vitro digestion study revealed that P and CH-conjugated-nanoliposomes (P-CH-NL) significantly controlled the NH release following by anomalous diffusion mechanism, and preserved around 72-78% of NH in GI condition. The ABTS antioxidant activity, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing activity indicated that conjugated-nanoliposomes can preserve greater antioxidant activity after GI digestion. In vitro cellular uptake study showed enhanced Rh123 uptake by carrier systems, particularly P-CH-NL exhibited the highest uptake of around 141% followed by CH-NL (129%) and NL (100%). Cytotoxicity results also exposed that conjugated-nanoliposomes can significantly protect the human Caco-2 cells from AA-induced ROS generation. Conclusively, this work provides a promising approach for the controlled delivery of lipophilic natural products with enhanced cellular uptake at colonic epithelial cells and greater biological activity.
Encapsulation and sustained release of curcumin by hawthorn pectin and Tenebrio Molitor protein composite hydrogel

Abstract:In this study, the effects of pH value, mixing ratio and the Ca2+ concentration on the complex gelation of hawthorn pectin (HP) and Tenebrio Molitor protein (TMP) were investigated. The turbidity results showed that the composite gel had the maximum polymer concentration when the mixing ratio was 2:1 and the pH value was 3.35. The rheological measurement results showed that TMP/HP (15 mmol/L) hydrogel (THIH) had the highest storage modulus and loss modulus, indicating that the properties of the hydrogel at this Ca2+ concentration had been significantly improved. The results of scanning electron microscope and pore size also proved that the network structure prepared under this condition was compact and uniform, the pore size was small, which was beneficial to the entrapment of active components. Subsequently, in order to explore the storage stability and antioxidant activity of THIH-loaded curcumin in simulated gastrointestinal environment, in vitro simulated digestion experiment was carried out and satisfactory results were obtained. To sum up, THIH was a promising delivery system with broad application prospects, which was expected to provide a novel idea for the entrapment and delivery of active components.

Abstract:In order to better promote the application of the polymeric mixed micelles (PMMs) in oral delivery, in addition to focusing on the improvement of micellar structural stability, it is necessary to obtain the absorption characteristics of the intact micellar particles. In this work, the transport behavior across Caco-2 cells of FS/PMMs composed of Pluronic F127 and Solutol HS15 was tracked by encapsulating an environment-responsive probe into the particles. The specific property of the probe is the water-initiated aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) ability, by which integral particles can be identified accurately. The influence of polymeric ratios (FS) on the transcellular behavior of FS/PMMs was explored and the single pass intestinal perfusion experiment was used to further illustrate it. Moreover, pharmacokinetics parameters were detected to analyze the relationship among FS ratios, transport behavior, and pharmacokinetic parameters. FS ratios were found to hardly affect the endocytosis pathways and intracellular itinerary of FS/PMMs, but do affect the proportion of each path. FS/PMMs with high HS15 content, namely System-I, were found to primarily undergo receptor-mediated endocytosis pathway and be less susceptible to lysosomal degradation, which would lead to more absorption and higher Cmax and AUC than drug suspension. In contrast, despite System-II with high F127 content cannot contribute to drug plasma concentration, it can prolong the in vivo retention time. These findings provided evidence for the role of polymeric ratios in modulating the transcellular absorption and pharmacokinetic parameters of the drug-loaded PMMs, and would be a step forward in helping PMMs' design to enhance oral drug delivery. Smart pH-Sensitive Hydrogel Based on the Pineapple Peel-Oxidized Hydroxyethyl Cellulose and the Hericium erinaceus Residue Carboxymethyl Chitosan for Use in Drug Delivery

Abstract:Pineapple and hericium erinaceus (HE) produce a lot of residues in the process of food processing. These processed residues are good potential derivative precursors. In this investigation, a simple and non-toxic method was developed to prepare one new composite hydrogel by the Schiff base reaction between the aldehyde group of oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose (OHEC) from processed pineapple peel residue and the amino group of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) from processed HE residue. Subsequently, a series of experiments toward these new hydrogel polymers including structure characterization and performances were applied. The resultant hydrogel polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy and confirmed with thermogravimetry. It was observed that the modification of cellulose and chitin was adequate, and the synthesis of OHEC/CMCS hydrogel polymers was successful. The gelation time experiments indicated that the shortest gel time was 33 s at a mass ratio of 4:6 (OHEC-70:CMCS). The hydrogel showed good swelling properties. The maximum swelling rate reached 11.58 g/g, and the swelling rate decreased with the increase of the oxidation degree of OHEC. The drug delivery applications of the prepared hydrogel were evaluated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model drug releasing in vitro. It was discovered that the BSA release from the hydrogel was pH sensitive under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. All of these attributes indicate that the novel prepared hydrogel polymers have the potential as good carriers for oral delivery of protein-type drugs.
Spray-Drying of Hydroxypropyl β-Cyclodextrin Microcapsules for Co-Encapsulation of Resveratrol and Piperine with Enhanced Solubility

Abstract:The synergistic therapeutic benefits of resveratrol (RES) and piperine (PIP) have been proven for the treatment of various diseases. This study reports, for the first time, spray-drying of hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) microcapsules for combined delivery of resveratrol and piperine. Phase solubility studies indicated that there was a strong interaction between the active ingredients and HP-β-CD, and both active ingredients can bind stably to HP-β-CD. The results of FTIR, XRD, and DSC demonstrated that RES-PIP/HP-β-CD inclusion complexes were successfully formed, with the RES and PIP encapsulated into the hollow spherical cavity of HP-β-CD. The results of SEM showed that the spray-dried microcapsules displayed a smooth surface and uniform particle size. Upon the formation of the spray-dried microcapsules, both RES and PIP presented significantly enhanced solubility. The results of DPPH and ABTS+ scavenging activity assays showed that the spray-drying process did not adversely influence the antioxidant activity of the bioactives, and the addition of PIP increased the antioxidation performance of RES.

Abstract:Controlled release formulation of pesticides based on microcapsules is a promising strategy for improving utilization efficiency and reducing adverse effects caused by conventional pesticide formulations. However, the complex preparation process and use of toxic additives limit the development of microcapsules. Herein, a simple and green method was developed to prepare double-shelled CaCO 3 microcapsules of pesticide using the newly prepared prochloraz ionic liquid (PRO IL) as a nucleating agent to precipitate CaCO 3 on the surface of PRO IL micelles in situ and pectin as a coating agent without a complex post-loading process. The results showed that the obtained spherical microcapsules had pectinase and pH dual responsive release properties. The release of PRO from microcapsules belonged to a non-Fickian behavior controlled by the dissolution and diffusion. The photostability of obtained microcapsules was 1.58 times better than that of PRO EW. The fungicidal tests showed that microcapsules had a long-term efficacy against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and the control efficacy was 1.65 times that of PRO EW at the same concentration. The genotoxicity tests showed that PRO 3 @pectin microcapsules did not increase genotoxicity to cells of Vicia faba compared with PRO EW and encapsulation of pesticides in carriers could reduce genotoxicity of PRO IL to plants. These findings would provide a new strategy for the development of calcium carbonate-based microcapsules which could effectively increase the utilization efficiency of pesticides by improving the photostability and durability in environment.

Abstract:As a translucent functional gel with biodegradability, non-toxicity and acid resistance, gellan gum has been widely used in probiotic packaging, drug delivery, wound dressing, metal ion adsorption and other fields in recent years. Because of its remarkable gelation characteristics, gellan gum is suitable as the shell material of microcapsules to encapsulate functional substances, by which the functional components can improve stability and achieve delayed release. In recent years, many academically or commercially reliable products have rapidly emerged, but there is still a lack of relevant reports on in-depth research and systematic summaries regarding the process of microcapsule formation and its corresponding mechanisms. To address this challenge, this review focuses on the formation process and applications of gellan gum-based microcapsules, and details the commonly used preparation methods in microcapsule production. Additionally, it explores the impact of factors such as ion types, ion strength, temperature, pH, and others present in the solution on the performance of the microcapsules. On this basis, it summarizes and analyzes the prospects of gellan gum-based microcapsule products. The comprehensive insights from this review are expected to provide inspiration and design ideas for researchers.
