Abstract:Underwater multispectral images are disturbed by water absorption, dispersion and scattering etc. Previous conducts have been made to model the underwater multispectral imaging process and to restore underwater multispectral images based on water attenuation estimation. In this paper, optimization is done to determine the least number of distances (or images) which is adequate for accurate compensation of water attenuation on underwater multispectral images. Distance-sets that include distinct values of underwater distances are used for calibration, and two sets are selected that include few distances and meanwhile provide good calibration results. Distinct distances are tuned accordingly as to compensate for the water attenuation on underwater images. Using the selected distance sets, underwater images are then restored and the satisfactory restoration results are achieved.

Abstract:Spectral reflectance detection of the targeted object is considered a vital inherent optical property for its potential to provide abundant spectral information, which is crucial in underwater spectral imaging. However, the coarse condition of the underwater environment due to turbidity causes extreme distortions in spectral reflectance detection due to the high absorption and scattering of light. To cope with the effects of light degradation on underwater spectral reflectance detection accuracy, the rate of the impacts of turbidity on spectral reflectance should be examined thoroughly. Therefore, we utilize a stare-type underwater spectral imaging system based on a liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) to study the effects of turbidity in underwater spectral imaging of various colored bodies. To examine the accuracy of underwater spectral reflectance detection based on escalating turbidity, the paper models the rate of increase in scattering intensity of the water body. Results show that, based on the non-linear increase in the pixel response of the black and white board, the rapid upsurge in scattering intensity occurs between 400nm to 500nm at different turbidity levels. Additionally, the spectral reconstruction of color bodies relative to the black and white board shows the maximum absolute deviation of 5.3% in spectral reflectance detection accuracy under varying turbidity. While employing underwater spectral imaging, the above findings of optimal band selection can find significant applications to improve the quality of underwater object detection.

Abstract:Multiple scattering is an inevitable effect in spaceborne oceanic lidar because of the large footprint size and the high optical density of seawater. The effective attenuation coefficient k(lidar) in oceanic lidar equation, which indicates the influence of the multiple scattering effect on the formation of lidar returns, is an important parameter in the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater. In this paper, the nonlinearity of k(lidar) and the relationships between k(lidar) and the IOPs of seawater are investigated by solving the radiative transfer equation with an improved semianalytic Monte Carlo model. k(lidar) is found to decrease exponentially with the increase of depth in homogeneous waters. k(lidar) is given as an exponential function of depth and IOPs of seawater. The results in this paper can help to have a better understanding of the multiple scattering effect of spaceborne lidar and improve the retrieval accuracy of the IOPs of seawater using spaceborne lidar.

Abstract:Imaging through dynamic scattering media is one of the most challenging yet fascinating problems in optics, with applications spanning from biological detection to remote sensing. In this study, we propose a comprehensive learning-based technique that facilitates real-time, non-invasive, incoherent imaging of real-world objects through dense and dynamic scattering media. We conduct extensive experiments, demonstrating the capability of our technique to see through turbid water and natural fog. The experimental results indicate that the proposed technique surpasses existing approaches in numerous aspects and holds significant potential for imaging applications across a broad spectrum of disciplines.

Abstract:Underwater ghost imaging is an effective means of underwater detection. In this paper, a theoretical and experimental study of underwater ghost imaging is carried out by combining the description of underwater optical field transmission with the inherent optical parameters of the water body. This paper utilizes the Wells model and the approximate S-S scattering phase function to create a model for optical transmission underwater. The second-order Glauber function of the optical field is then employed to analyze the scattering field's degradation during the transmission process. This analysis is used to evaluate the impact of the water body on ghost imaging. The simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed underwater ghost imaging model can better describe the degradation effect of water bodies on ghost imaging. A series of experiments comparing underwater ghost imaging at different detection distances are also carried out in this paper. In the experiments, cooperative targets can be imaged up to 65.2m (9.3AL, at attenuation coefficient c=0.1426m-1 and the scattering coefficient b=0.052m-1) and non-cooperative targets up to 41.2m (6.4AL, at c=0.1569m-1 and b=0.081m-1) . By equating the experimental maximum imaged attenuation length for cooperative targets to Jerlov-I water (b=0.002m-1 and a=0.046m-1), the system will have a maximum imaging distance of 193m. Underwater ghost imaging is expected to achieve longer-range imaging by optimizing the system emission energy and detection sensitivity.

Abstract:As light is attenuated when disseminating in water, the clarity of images or videos captured under water is usually degraded to varying degrees. By exploring the difference in light attenuation between in atmosphere and in water, we derive a new underwater optical model to describe the formation of an underwater image in the true physical process, and then propose an effective enhancement algorithm with the derived optical model to improve the perception of underwater images or video frames. In our algorithm, a new underwater dark channel is derived to estimate the scattering rate, and an effective method is also presented to estimate the background light in the underwater optical model. Experimental results show that our algorithm can well handle underwater images, especially for deep-sea images and those captured from turbid waters.
Adaptive Filter Design for Suppressing the Moving Surface Interferences in Optic-Acoustic Remote Sensing

Abstract:Optic-acoustic remote sensing has been proposed to detect underwater sound signal from the air, thus providing a new method for underwater communication and detection. It exploits the fact that acoustic pressure waves propagating within the water environment cause vibrations on an air-water interface and the particle velocities can be optically detected by observing the amplitude or phase characteristics of the reflected optical beam which is emanated from a laser interferometer. This paper studies an interesting phenomenon observed from our optic-acoustic remote sensing experiments. In the hydrodynamic surface condition, the air-water interface is in motion, thus the moving water surface is a strong interference source. We design some adaptive filters such as the least mean squares (LMS), recursive least squares (RLS) and Kalman filter to suppress this interference. The designed filters are applied to the experiment raw data, and the processing results show an obviously improved signal-to-interference ratio.

Abstract:As the communication distance changes, the received signal strength of an underwater optical communication system will change, and the range of its variation may not only exceed the dynamic range of the photoelectric detection device but also cause the reliability of communication to change due to the change in the received signal-to-noise ratio. In order to maintain better communication over a longer distance, this paper proposes a rate-adaptive method for underwater optical communication with joint control in the photoelectric domain. In the optical domain, the incident light's power is adaptively adjusted by controlling the transmittance of the liquid crystal light valve to reduce saturation distortion. In the electrical domain, the constellation distribution is optimized according to the desired probability mass function, and the modulation order is adjusted in real time by estimating the received signal-to-noise ratio of the link. The simulation results show that under the forward error correction (FEC) threshold, the proposed method increases the dynamic range of the photomultiplier tube (PMT) by about 10 dB and expands the dynamic range of the system's communication distance.

Harnessing Optical Imaging Limit through Atmospheric Scattering Media

Abstract:Recording and identifying faint objects through atmospheric scattering media by an optical system are fundamentally interesting and technologically important. In this work, we introduce a comprehensive model that incorporates contributions from target characteristics, atmospheric effects, imaging system, digital processing, and visual perception to assess the ultimate perceptible limit of geometrical imaging, specifically the angular resolution at the boundary of visible distance. The model allows to reevaluate the effectiveness of conventional imaging recording, processing, and perception and to analyze the limiting factors that constrain image recognition capabilities in atmospheric media. The simulations were compared with the experimental results measured in a fog chamber and outdoor settings. The results reveal general good agreement between analysis and experimental, pointing out the way to harnessing the physical limit for optical imaging in scattering media. An immediate application of the study is the extension of the image range by an amount of 1.2 times with noise reduction via multi-frame averaging, hence greatly enhancing the capability of optical imaging in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Over the past several years, ghost imaging has made remarkable achievements in poor optical conditions, including underwater imaging works. This study describes the interactions between environmental interference and experimental results of ghost imaging applied to underwater scenarios deduced by mathematical processes and related researches findings. In this paper, the causes of notable optical influences: absorption, scattering, and turbulence are firstly presented in the form of statistical mathematics; Sequentially, at the level of complex amplitude in wave optics, the experimental principle: second-order correlation are calculated as a basic for subsequent discussion in physical illustration; further, mainly from existing researches, the text expounds the specific influence of environmental and experimental factors on the imaging quality with above-mentioned models.

Abstract:Underwater image generally suffers from color degradation and poor visibility due to the attenuation and scattering of the propagated light. To restore the real environment of the underwater, most of previous methods only consider the scattering in the polarimetric image recovery model. To compensate for the absorption in different wavelengths, a simple but effective underwater image enhancement method that based on the adaptive polarimetric image recovery model is proposed in this paper. In order to achieve automatic estimation of model parameters, the backscattered light estimation is based on the quad-tree decomposition to extract the fully backscattered area automatically. The experimental results demonstrate that the visual quality of underwater images are efficiently enhanced.

Abstract:The quality of underwater images is often affected by light scattering and attenuation, resulting in a loss of contrast and brightness. To address this issue, this paper proposes an underwater image enhancement method: improved Fick's law algorithm-based optimally weighted histogram framework (IFLAHF). The method incorporates the bi-histogram equalization-based three plateau limits (BHE3PL) technique to enhance image contrast and details while maintaining brightness. However, its dependence on fixed parameters limits its adaptability. To overcome this limitation, the paper introduces Fick's law algorithm (FLA) and then improves it to optimize the fixed parameters. FLA is improved by incorporating Tent chaotic mapping and reverse learning to increase population diversity, and Levy flight is introduced in the later stages to enhance exploitation. Additionally, a color correction technique is applied to correct color deviations in underwater images, leading to a more natural appearance. To verify the performance of the method, it is compared with different methods. As demonstrated by simulations, the proposed method outperforms existing algorithms in multiple underwater image enhancement metrics.

Abstract:Underwater images often exhibit severe color deviations and degraded visibility, which limits many practical applications in ocean engineering. Although extensive research has been conducted into underwater image enhancement, little of which demonstrates the significant robustness and generalization for diverse real-world underwater scenes. In this paper, we propose an adaptive color correction algorithm based on the maximum likelihood estimation of Gaussian parameters, which effectively removes color casts of a variety of underwater images. A novel algorithm using weighted combination of gradient maps in HSV color space and absolute difference of intensity for accurate background light estimation is proposed, which circumvents the influence of white or bright regions that challenges existing physical model-based methods. To enhance contrast of resultant images, a piece-wise affine transform is applied to the transmission map estimated via background light differential. Finally, with the estimated background light and transmission map, the scene radiance is recovered by addressing an inverse problem of image formation model. Extensive experiments reveal that our results are characterized by natural appearance and genuine color, and our method achieves competitive performance with the state-of-the-art methods in terms of objective evaluation metrics, which further validates the better robustness and higher generalization ability of our enhancement model.

Abstract:Underwater optics have seen a notable surge of interest in recent years, emerging as a critical medium for conveying information crucial to underwater resource exploration, autonomous underwater vehicle navigation, etc. The intricate dynamics of underwater optical transmission, influenced by factors such as the absorption by the water and scattering by multiple particles, present considerable challenges. One of the most critical issues is that the optical information representation methods fail to take into account the impact of the underwater physical environment. We conducted a comprehensive review and analysis of recent advancements in underwater optical transmission laws and models. We summarized and analyzed relevant research on the effects of underwater particles and turbulence on light and analyzed the polarization effects in various environments. Then, the roles of various types of underwater optical propagation models were analyzed. Although optical models in complex environments are still mostly based on Monte Carlo methods, many underwater optical propagation mechanisms have been revealed and can promote the impacts of optical information expression. We delved into the cutting-edge research findings across three key domains: the enhancement of underwater optical image quality, the 3D reconstruction from monocular images, and the underwater wireless optical communication, examining the pivotal role played by light transmission laws and models in these areas. Drawing upon our extensive experience in underwater optics, including underwater optical sensor development and experiments, we identified and underscored future directions in this field. We advocate for the necessity of further advancements in the comprehension of underwater optical laws and physical models, emphasizing the importance of their expanded application in underwater optical information representations. Deeper exploration into these areas is not only warranted but essential for pushing the boundaries of current underwater optical technologies and unlocking new potential for their application in underwater optical sensor developments, underwater exploration, environmental monitoring, and beyond.

Abstract:The challenges associated with acquiring the clear images of objects in underwater environment are difficult to overcome due to the absorptive and scattering nature of seawater. Recently, the research community has focused on mitigating these effects. The recent developments in image enhancement algorithms and strategies of signal light enhancement have brought improvement in some application areas. In this work, we review the six most common methods based on signal light enhancement. We present the individual working mechanisms, latest representative advances, and suitable application conditions. Moreover, we also present a detailed comparison of these techniques. In each technique, we present their applicable environments and conditions according to the following indicators: operating distance (from 2 attenuation lengths (AL) to 13.5 AL), resolution (from centimeter to millimeter), and field of view (FOV). By summarizing and analyzing the existing problems that restrict the underwater optical imaging techniques, the future development trends are prospected.
