Abstract:Motor dysfunction is the major sequela of ischemic stroke. Motor recovery after stroke has been shown to be associated with remodeling of large-scale brain networks, both functionally and structurally. Electroacupuncture (EA) is a traditional Chinese medicine application that has frequently been recommended as an alternative therapy for ischemic stroke and is reportedly effective for alleviating motor symptoms in patients. In the present study, the effect of EA on the alterations of functional resting state networks (RSNs) was explored after middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) injury using resting-state functional MRI. Rats were randomly assigned to three groups, including the sham group, MCAO/R group and MCAO/R+EA group. The ladder rung walking test was conducted prior to and after modeling to assess behavioral changes. RSNs were identified based on the independent component analysis (ICA) performed on the fMRI data from groups. EA treatment effectively reduced the occurrence of contralateral forelimb foot faults. Furthermore, our results suggested the disrupted function of the whole-brain network following ischemic stroke and the modulatory effect of acupuncture. The sensorimotor network (SMN), interoceptive network (IN), default mode network (DMN) and salience network (SN) were related to the therapeutic effect of EA on stroke recovery. Collectively, our findings confirmed the effect of EA on motor function recovery after cerebral ischemia reperfusion and shed light on the assessment of EA intervention-induced effects on brain networks. This study provides neuroimaging evidence to explain the therapeutic effects of EA in ischemic stroke and will lay the groundwork for further studies.

Electroacupuncture alters brain network functional connectivity in subacute stroke: A randomised crossover trial

Abstract:Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a promising rehabilitation treatment for upper-limb motor recovery in stroke patients. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying its clinical efficacy remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the immediate modulatory effects of EA on brain network functional connectivity and topological properties. Methods: The randomized, single-blinded, self-controlled two-period crossover trial was conducted among 52 patients with subacute subcortical stroke. These patients were randomly allocated to receive either EA as the initial intervention or sham electroacupuncture (SEA) as the initial intervention. After a washout period of 24 hours, participants underwent the alternate intervention (SEA or EA). Resting state electroencephalography signals were recorded synchronously throughout both phases of the intervention. The functional connectivity (FC) of the parietofrontal network and small-world (SW) property indices of the whole-brain network were compared across the entire course of the two interventions. Results: The results demonstrated that EA significantly altered ipsilesional parietofrontal network connectivity in the alpha and beta bands (alpha: F = 5.05, P = .011; beta: F = 3.295, P = .047), whereas no significant changes were observed in the SEA group. When comparing between groups, EA significantly downregulated ipsilesional parietofrontal network connectivity in both the alpha and beta bands during stimulation (alpha: t = −1.998, P = .049; beta: t = −2.342, P = .022). Significant differences were also observed in the main effects of time and the group × time interaction for the SW index (time: F = 5.516, P = .026; group × time: F = 6.892, P = .01). In terms of between-group comparisons, the EA group exhibited a significantly higher SW index than the SEA group at the post-stimulation stage (t = 2.379, P = .018). Conclusion: These findings suggest that EA downregulates ipsilesional parietofrontal network connectivity and enhances SW properties, providing a potential neurophysiological mechanism for facilitating motor performance in stroke patients.

Resting-state Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis of Brain Functional Activity in Rats with Ischemic Stroke Treated by Electro-acupuncture

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate whether electro-acupuncture (EA) treatment at acupoints of Zusanli (ST 36) and Quchi (LI 11) could reduce motor impairments and enhance brain functional recovery in rats with ischemic stroke. Materials and methods: A rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was established. EA at ST 36 and LI 11was started at 24 hours (MCAO + EA group) after ischemic stroke. The nontreatment (MCAO) and sham-operated control (SC) groups were included as controls. The neurologic deficits of all groups were assessed by Zea Longa scores and the modified neurologic severity scores on 24 hours and 8 days after MCAO. To further investigate the effect of EA on infract volume and brain function, magnetic resonance imaging was used to estimate the brain lesion and brain neural activities of each group at 8 days after ischemic stroke. Results: Within 1 week after EA treatment, the neurologic deficits were significantly alleviated, and the cerebral infarctions were improved, including visual cortex, motor cortex, striatum, dorsal thalamus, and hippocampus. Furthermore, whole brain neural activities of auditory cortex, lateral nucleus group of dorsal thalamus, hippocampus, motor cortex, orbital cortex, sensory cortex, and striatum were decreased in MCAO group, whereas that of brain neural activities were increased after EA treatment, suggesting these brain regions are in accordance with the brain structure analysis. Conclusion: EA at ST 36 and LI 11 could enhance the neural activity of motor function-related brain regions, including motor cortex, dorsal thalamus, and striatum in rats, which is a potential treatment for ischemia stroke.

Abstract:The limited capacity of central nerve regeneration after cerebral ischemia has been the focus of attention in the field. Electroacupuncture (EA) is an effective therapy for functional rehabilitation after cerebral stroke. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. This study explored whether EA can improve the inhibitory microenvironment, attenuate RhoA/ROCK-mediated neurite regrowth inhibitory pathways, andpromote the expression of neuroplasticity proteins, thus exerting a protective role in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 2 h followed by 7 days of reperfusion, and they received EA or fasudil once daily for 7 days. The Garcia JH score, 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to assess neural injury. The protein and mRNA levels of myelin-associated inhibitors (MAIs), RhoA/ROCK pathway-related molecules and neuroplasticity-related proteins were examined to explore the effect of EA on rats with cerebral I/R injury. We found that EA significantly decreased the infarct size and improved neurological function and hippocampal ultrastructure in the rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. EA ameliorates the inhibition of axonal regrowth and provides a protective role in functional rehabilitation after cerebral stroke by downregulating the MAI-induced RhoA/ROCK signaling pathway and by promoting the expression of GAP43 and BDNF to protect against cerebral I/R injury. Our findings provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying EA as an effective therapy for ischemic stroke.
Effect of electrode configuration in electroacupuncture on ischemic stroke treatment in rats

Abstract:Background and aim: This study investigated the effect of the electrode configuration on EA treating ischemic stroke. Experimental procedure: An ischemic stroke rat model was established. In the EA-P group, the anodes of EA were placed on the BL7 and BL8 acupoints of the lesioned, and the cathodes were placed on the BL7 and BL8 acupoints of the nonlesioned hemispheres; by contrast, in the EA-N group. Results: The difference in neurological deficit scores between the first and fourth days and the difference in Rotarod test time between the fourth and first days after reperfusion were greater in the EA-P and EA-N groups than in the sham group (all p < 0.001). In the lesioned hemisphere, neuronal nuclei (NeuN), γ-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA)-A, postsynaptic density 95 (PSD95), and astrocyte glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1) expression and microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2)/glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GADPH) ratios were greater and the glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP)/GADPH ratios were smaller in the EA-P than in the sham group (all p < 0.05), but these ratios in the EA-N group were similar to those in the sham group (all p > 0.05); serum adrenaline and serotonin levels in the sham group were lower than those in the normal and EA-P groups (both p < 0.05), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) glutamate levels were higher in the EA-P group than in the sham group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: EA improved neurological function through multiple pathways. However, placing the anode on the lesioned hemisphere can provide more neuroprotection.

Abstract:Background: Neurological deficits is one of the most prevalent clinical manifestation after stroke. The effects of astrocytes activated by electroacupunture (EA) after stroke on the neurological recovery in middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rats was not clear and definite. Objective: Our previous study showed that treatment with EA for 7 days contributed to the activation of astrocytes in MCAO rats. The purposes of this study were to 1) confirm the effects of EA for 14 days on activation of astrocytes in MCAO rats, and 2) test the relationships between activation of astrocytes and neurological functional recovery induced by EA in MCAO rats. Methods: All rats were randomly divided into five groups: naive control group, sham control control group, MCAO, MCAO/EAn, MCAO/EAd (n = 8, for each group). Rats in MCAO/EAn group received EA treatment at acupoints of Neiguan (PC06). MCAO/EAd group received EA stimulus at acupoints of Diji (SP08). The primary indicators were locomotor recovery, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR and Western blot. Results: The neurological deficit and histopathological improvements and activation of astrocytes were observed after EA treatment at acupoints PC06. Parametric correlation analyses revealed a cubic correlation relationship between activation of astrocytes and neurological recovery of MCAO rats treated with EA. Conclusion: EA treatment at the acupoints of Neiguan involved in the regulation of activation of astrocytes, which our data suggested has a cubic correlation relationship with the neurological recovery of MCAO rats.

Abstract:For the first time PIV has been applied simultaneously with acetone-PLIF in the freeboard of a fluidized bed. Here, the eruption profile of single bubbles and a continuous stream of bubbles were studied. As stereoscopic PIV was applied the out-of-plane component of the velocity was also measured. The out-of-plane component is not negligible. The observed bubble eruption patterns were in general agreement with the bubble model of Levy and Lockwood,24 Yorquez-Ramirez and Duursma5 and Solimene et al.1 No qualitative difference between the eruption of a single bubble and a stream of bubbles was observed. Based on the calculated vorticity of the gas in the freeboard, it was found that the bubble induced turbulence decays fairly rapidly. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2009
Electroacupuncture Improves Neurological Deficits and Enhances Proliferation and Differentiation of Endogenous Nerve Stem Cells in Rats with Focal Cerebral Ischemia

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:This study was carried out to observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on neurological deficits, proliferation and differentiation of nerve stem cells (NSCs) in adult rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and to study its possible role in the treatment of cerebral ischemic injury.METHODS:A rat model of MCAO was established and interfered with EA. On days 4, 7, 14 and 21 after ischemic injury, neurological deficits were scored. On days 4, 7, 14 and 21 after injury, effect of EA interference on the proliferation and differentiation of rat NSCs was observed with BrdU/NeuN and BrdU/GFAP immunofluorescence double labeling.RESULTS:A significant difference was found in the scores of rat neurological deficits between the EA and model groups 7, 14 and 21 days after cerebral ischemic injury (p<0.05). BrdU positive cells were found in the subventricular zone (SVZ) 4, 7, 14 and 21 days after ischemic injury. The number of positive BrdU cells in the SVZ reached its peak 7 days after injury and was greater in the EA group than in the model group 7 and 14 days after injury (p<0.05). The number of BrdU/GFAP doubly labeled positive cells in the SVZ was greater in the EA group than in the model group 7 and 14 days after ischemic injury (p=0.012 and p=0.025, respectively). There was no difference in the number of BrdU/NeuN doubly labeled positive cells 4, 7 and 14 days in the striatum, but a significant difference 21 days (p=0.033) after ischemic injury between the two groups.DISCUSSION:Cerebral ischemic injury induces proliferation of NSCs, some of which will differentiate into both astroglia and neurons. EA may promote cells proliferation, stimulate the proliferating cells to differentiate into astroglia and mature into neurons, which may be one of the important reasons why EA can alleviate neurological deficits.
[Clinical and radiologic long-term follow-up of Eden-Lang operation in habitual anterior shoulder dislocation].

Abstract:The incidence of degenerative arthritis after Eden-Lange procedure is judged differently in literature, recently high rates of degenerative arthritis have been reported. 37 patients and the same number of shoulder joints have been evaluated clinically and radiologically after an average follow-up time of 14.9 years. Overall results can be considered as good. Recurrence of dislocation occurred only in one case. Most frequently we observed a limitation of external rotation and overhead performance in sports. The frequency of degenerative arthritis was 17%, clearly less than mentioned elsewhere. The Eden-Lange procedure still can be recommended as a treatment for recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation except for patients with high expectations in physical overhead activities.

Abstract:<p>Acupuncture is a mild therapy in rehabilitation practice of peripheral nerve injury. Previous studies confirmed the deep participation of brain plasticity in the process of functional restoration. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture is also believed to be closely associated with brain plasticity, especially in the hypothalamus and limbic system. But the fuzzy neural mechanism somehow limits the application or improvement of this therapy. There is little information about the effect of acupuncture on topological properties of brain networks. Instead of functional segregation approach, we utilized graph theory method to analyze the large-scale and distributed properties of information processing. We first established rat model of sciatic nerve injury and performed rehabilitation therapy of electroacupuncture for 120 days. Meanwhile, we used independent component analysis to extract seven sub-networks from the whole brain. Then measurements of graph theory were calculated in each sub-network as well as the whole brain network. We found no significant difference of any measurement in whole brain network among intervention group, model group and normal group. But the assortativity, hierarchy, small-world properties of sub-network displayed significant differences among three groups. It induces changes of neural plasticity in several sub-networks instead of whole brain network. We attributed the changes to the enhancement of the short-term compensatory adaptation and the reduction of the long-term overacting regional information transmission. The present study may shed light on the vague distinction of large-scale property of brain networks after electroacupuncture, which leads to a better understanding of this ancient traditional Chinese therapy.</p>

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries in young females playing soccer at senior levels

Abstract:The aim of this investigation was to study the consequences of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female soccer players. Special interest was focused on young female soccer players (< 16 years) sustaining anterior cruciate ligament injuries when playing at a senior level, which means playing together with players 19 years or older. In Sweden, all players belonging to an organized soccer club are insured by the same insurance company, the Folksam Insurance Company. Data of all soccer‐related knee injuries in females reported to the Folksam Insurance Company between 1994 and 1998 were collected. A questionnaire was sent to 978 females who were registered to have sustained a knee injury before the age of 20 years. The response rate was 79%. Three hundred and ninety‐eight female soccer players who had sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury before the age of 19 years were analysed. Most of their anterior cruciate ligament injuries had been diagnosed using arthroscopy or magnetic resonance imaging (84%). Thirty‐eight percent of the players had been injured before the age of 16 years. Of these, 39% were injured when playing in senior teams. When playing in senior teams 59% of the players below the age of 16 years and 44% of the players 16 years or older sustained their ACL injuries during contact situations. At the time of this investigation (2–7 years after the anterior cruciate ligament injury), altogether 78% (n = 311) reported that they had stopped playing soccer. The most common reason (80%) was symptoms from their anterior cruciate ligament‐injured knee. It appears that many young female soccer players injure their anterior cruciate ligament when playing at a senior level. Therefore, we suggest that female soccer players under the age of 16 years should be allowed to participate only in practice sessions but not games at a senior level.

Abstract:In recent years, the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has not been fully elucidated. The balance between mitochondrial fission and fusion is important for PSCI. Our previous research demonstrated that electroacupuncture can improve learning and memory in middle cerebral artery ischemia reperfusion (MCAO/R) rats. However, the specific mechanism by which electroacupuncture improves learning and memory in MCAO/R rats by regulating mitochondrial fission and fusion needs to be further investigated. The MCAO/R rats was developed using the line-bolt method. The rats were randomly divided into sham-operated (Sham), model (MCAO/R), electroacupuncture (MCAO/R + EA) and sham-electroacupuncture (MCAO/R + sham EA) groups. Investigating the effects of EA on the expression of Sirtuin1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), Optic atrophy 1R + (OPA1) and Dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) in hippocampal neurons and on the morphology and function of hippocampal neurons and mitochondria. EA was able to reduce neurologic deficit scores and cerebral infarct volume and improve new object discrimination in MCAO/R rats, but there were no significant changes in these indices in the sham-electroacupuncture group. Moreover, EA increased the expression of SIRT1, PGC-1α, and OPA1 in hippocampal tissues, inhibited the expression of DRP1, attenuated neuronal and mitochondrial damage, and reduced mitochondrial fragmentation. The mechanism by which EA improves learning memory deficits in MCAO/R rats may be related to the inhibition of SIRT1/PGC-1α expression, the enhancement of mitochondrial fusion and the obstruction of its fission, and the reduction of hippocampal neuronal damage.
Unraveling the neuroprotective potential of scalp electroacupuncture in ischemic stroke: A key role for electrical stimulation

Abstract:This study aims to explore the neuroprotective effects of scalp Electroacupuncture (EA) on ischemic stroke, with a specific focus on the role of electrical stimulation (ES). Employing a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), we used methods such as Triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining, micro-CT scanning, Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and immunofluorescence to assess the impacts of EA. We further conducted RNA-seq analysis and in vitro experiments with organotypic brain slices and cerebral organoids to explore the underlying mechanisms. Our research revealed that EA notably reduced cerebral infarct volume and improved regional cerebral blood flow in rats following MCAO. Micro-CT imaging showed improved vascular integrity in EA-treated groups. Histological analyses, including HE staining, indicated reduced brain tissue damage. ELISA demonstrated a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, suggesting improved blood–brain barrier function. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses revealed that EA treatment significantly inhibited microglial and astrocytic overactivation. RNA-seq analysis of brain tissues highlighted a downregulation of immune pathways and inflammatory responses, confirming the neuroprotective role of EA. This was further corroborated by in vitro experiments using organotypic brain slices and cerebral organoids, which showcased the efficacy of electrical stimulation in reducing neuroinflammation and protecting neuronal cells. The study highlights the potential of scalp EA, particularly its ES component, in treating ischemic stroke. It provides new insights into the mechanisms of EA, emphasizing its efficacy in neuroprotection and modulation of neuroinflammation, and suggests avenues for optimized treatment strategies in stroke therapy.

Abstract:The present paper is to study the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on acute ischemic stroke patient and acute cerebral ischemic rat. In clinic, 42 acute ischemic stroke patients were randomly divided into 2 therapeutic groups: drug group and EA+ drug group. Neurological deficits of patients were evaluated before and after the treatment by Chinese Stroke Scale. The results showed that the acute ischemic stroke patients treated by drug or EA+ drug were all partially recovered, but the clinical functional recovery in EA+ drug group was significantly better than in the drug group (P < 0.01). In laboratory, the model of reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was used in rats. The somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) was recorded before and after MCAO. EA was applied one hour after cerebral ischemia and once a day after reperfusion for 7 days in EA+ MCAO group. It was shown that the amplitude of P1-N1 wave of SEP before MCAO was 100%. After MCAO 30 min the P1-N1 wave of SEP on the ipsilateral side of MCAO was decreased to 2.2 +/- 3% (MCAO group), 1.9 +/- 2% (MCAO+ EA group); and then recovered to 25.5 +/- 14.1% (MCAO group), 58.6 +/- 27.2% (MCAO+ EA group) after 7 days of reperfusion following MCAO 2 hours. The above results indicated that EA could promote the recovery of neurological function in acute ischemic stroke patients and SEP on MCAO rats.

Abstract:An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was developed for the detection of antibodies to adult T-cell leukemia-associated antigens (ATLA). This new method, which is simpler than the currently used indirect immunofluorescence technique, should be useful for mass screening of anti-ATLA antibodies.

Abstract:Hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is an established therapeutic choice for localized renal cell carcinoma. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy is becoming accepted for the treatment of locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer. Primary cancer may occur synchronously in two different organs, in which case simultaneous resection is recommended if possible. To our knowledge this is the first report of simultaneous laparoscopic resection of coexistent renal and colonic double primary malignant tumors.
