Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Graphene and its derivatives, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), are 2D carbon-based materials with remarkable physical, chemical and biological properties. Graphene sheets have high specific surface area and mechanical strength. Moreover, they have been shown to influence the differentiation of stem cells and to improve properties of biomaterials. METHODS:Here, we present the recent achievements on the use of graphene and its derivatives to improve properties and enhance bioactivity of biomaterials. We also discuss the biosafety constraints to be solved to translate these carbonaceous materials to the clinic. RESULTS:Graphene and its derivatives can be functionalized and further modified with several bioactive molecules. They can be combined with several biomaterials used in regenerative and reconstructive dentistry and medicine. The resultant graphene-modified composites often present improved physico-mechanical properties and enhanced bioactivity. Moreover, graphene-modified composites are promising candidates to deliver growth factors, drugs and others bioactive compounds. SIGNIFICANCE:Graphene can improve the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of biomaterials. As it can be functionalized and combined with several biomolecules, graphene holds enormous potential to be used as drug carriers or substrates and scaffolds for cell-based tissue engineering strategies.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are carbon-based, zero-dimensional nanomaterials and unique due to their astonishing optical, electronic, chemical, and biological properties. Chemical, photochemical, and biochemical properties of GQDs are intensely being explored for bioimaging, biosensing, and drug delivery. The synthesis of GQDs by top-down and bottom-up approaches, their chemical functionalization, bandgap engineering, and biomedical applications are reviewed here. Current challenges and future perspectives of GQDs are also presented.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) not only exhibit the excellent properties of graphene, but also display a series of new characteristics resulting from quantum confinement and boundary effects. These characteristics have a wide range of applications, including antibacterial, anticancer therapy, biosensing, bioimaging, and drug delivery. GQDs, as a novel type of nanocomposite material, will necessitate effective interdisciplinary collaboration between multiple disciplines, including chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine. In conclusion, GQDs have the potential to serve as a new platform for biotechnology and nanomedicine. The existing and emerging demand for materials for life and health has contributed to the cultivation and development of respective markets. Nevertheless, the current generation of biomedical materials has yet to fully satisfy the clinical requirements of the market, which is still in its relative infancy. Research and development in this area must be prioritized in light of the pivotal role of new life and health materials in the biological field. Among many life and health materials, GQDs, an emerging nanomaterial, exhibit considerable promise in the biomedical field, primarily due to their exceptional properties. Furthermore, the direct preparation and functionalization of GQDs have facilitated the development of specific functional composites based on GQDs. The biological applications of GQDs are undergoing rapid growth, which makes it necessary to publish a review article presenting the latest advances in this field. This review provides an overview of the significant advances in synthesizing GQDs, the techniques employed for structural characterizations, and the properties that have been elucidated. Furthermore, it presents recent findings on applying GQDs in antimicrobial, anticancer, biosensing, drug delivery, and bioimaging applications. Finally, it explores the potential of GQDs in biomedicine and biotechnology, highlighting the current challenges that remain to be addressed.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a zero-dimensional (0D) carbon-based nanomaterial with a unique quantum confinement effect that have captured the eyes of many researchers. In addition to their luminescence properties, a high biocompatibility and large surface area have enabled GQDs to be used for many applications, and even be integrated with either organic or inorganic materials to produce GQD nanocomposites to enhance the application performances and broaden the application scope. In this review, we aim to highlight the exquisite properties and synthesis methods of GQDs, recent advances in the fabrication of GQD nanocomposites with both organic and inorganic materials, and their corresponding luminescence-based and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based biosensing applications. Finally, this review article concludes with a summary of current challenges and prospects.

Abstract:A new type of 0-dimensional carbon-based materials called graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is gaining significant attention as a non-toxic and eco-friendly nanomaterial. GQDs are nanomaterials composed of sp2 hybridized carbon domains and functional groups, with their lateral size less than 10 nm. The unique and exceptional physical, chemical, and optical properties arising from the combination of graphene structure and quantum confinement effect due to their nano-size make GQDs more intriguing than other nanomaterials. Particularly, the low toxicity and high solubility derived from the carbon core and abundant edge functional groups offer significant advantages for the application of GQDs in the biomedical field. In this review, we summarize various synthetic methods for preparing GQDs and important factors influencing the physical, chemical, optical, and biological properties of GQDs. Furthermore, the recent application of GQDs in the biomedical field, including biosensor, bioimaging, drug delivery, and therapeutics are discussed. Through this, we provide a brief insight on the tremendous potential of GQDs in biomedical applications and the challenges that need to be overcome in the future.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have generated enormous excitement because of their superiority in chemical inertness, biocompatibility and low toxicity. Due to quantum confinement and edge effects, GQDs have excellent properties, attracting extensive attention from scientists in the fields of chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, and other interdisciplinary sciences. In this review, we aim to present a comprehensive view on the synthesis of GQDs for biological applications. We highlight potential methods like acid oxidation, hydrothermal and solvothermal reactions, microwave-assisted methods, electrochemical oxidation, as well as pyrolysis and carbonization for the successful preparation of GQDs. Meanwhile, four representative types of biomedical application based on GQDs, bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and antimicrobial materials, are introduced and discussed in detail. This work will be very useful for quickly gaining knowledge and experience for synthesizing various GQDs, and developing advanced strategies for creating novel functional GQD-based nanomaterials for further applications in biomedicine, materials science, analytical science, and optical nanodevices.

Abstract:<p>Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are carbon‐based, nanoscale particles that exhibit excellent chemical, physical, and biological properties that allow them to excel in a wide range of applications in nanomedicine. The unique electronic structure of GQDs confers functional attributes onto these nanomaterials such as strong and tunable photoluminescence for use in fluorescence bioimaging and biosensing, a high loading capacity of aromatic compounds for small‐molecule drug delivery, and the ability to absorb incident radiation for use in the cancer‐killing techniques of photothermal and photodynamic therapy. Recent advances in the development of GQDs as novel, multifunctional biomaterials are presented with a focus on their physicochemical, electronic, magnetic, and biological properties, along with a discussion of technical progress in the synthesis of GQDs. Progress toward the application of GQDs in bioimaging, biosensing, and therapy is reviewed, along with a discussion of the current limitations and future directions of this exciting material.</p>

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials are contemporary and are outpacing the technology platform. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) had a significant impact on the subject of bioengineering, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, biosensors, fuel, energy, etc. Depending on how quickly this field is developing, it is important to recognize the new difficulties that GQDs have to overcome. This is incredibly significant because many novel applications and innovations that have made GQD synthesis easier recently have not been systematically evaluated in prior studies. Their ability to combine the benefits of quantum dots, sp2 carbon materials (large specific surface area), and have rich functional groups at the edge makes them special. The naturally occurring inert carbon helps to stabilize chemical and physical characteristics and makes significant advancements in the creation of benchmark photocatalysts. Moreover, current challenges and potential of these rapidly developing GQDs are emphasized. The future of GQD research is limitless, according to the assessment in this review, notably if future research focuses on simplicity of purification and ecofriendly synthesis. This feature article offers a realistic summary on recent developments in the synthesis, characteristics, and uses of GQDs. Frequent review articles focusing on the progress of GQDs for specific applications are published but a thorough review article on GQDs for their numerous uses has not yet been published. The recent trends of scientific research based on new optical biosensing applications, including the comprehensive applications of different zero-dimensional nanomaterials, specially GQDs are discussed in this study.

Abstract:Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) are low dimensional carbon based materials with interesting physical, chemical and biological properties that enable their applications in numerous fields. GQDs possess unique electronic structures that impart special functional attributes such as tunable optical/electrical properties in addition to heteroatom-doping and more importantly a propensity for surface functionalization for applications in biosensing and bioimaging. Herein, we review the recent advancements in the top-down and bottom-up approaches for the synthesis of GQDs. Following this, we present a detailed review of the various surface properties of GQDs and their applications in bioimaging and biosensing. GQDs have been used for fluorescence imaging for visualizing tumours and monitoring the therapeutic responses in addition to magnetic resonance imaging applications. Similarly, the photoluminescence based biosensing applications of GQDs for the detection of hydrogen peroxide, micro RNA, DNA, horse radish peroxidase, heavy metal ions, negatively charged ions, cardiac troponin, etc. are discussed in this review. Finally, we conclude the review with a discussion on future prospects.

Abstract:Nanocarbon quantum dots like carbon quantum dots (CQD) and graphene quantum dots (GQD)‐based drug delivery applications have shown substantial efficacy in clinical translation; however, challenges remain in terms of controlled drug release and molecular impact understanding. This review provides insight into recent progress, potential challenges, and future perspectives for CQD and GQD‐based therapeutic delivery platforms, addressing clearance and potential detrimental effects in cell lines and in vivo models. The carbon‐based nanostructures have led to the development of theranostic nanoplatforms for simultaneous diagnosis and therapy due to their effective cell membrane‐penetration ability, low degree of cytotoxicity, excellent pore volume, substantial chemical stability, and reactive surface. In the last few years, extensive efforts were made to design multifunctional nanoplatform strategies based on carbon nanostructures, involving multimodal imaging, controlled drug release capabilities, sensing in vitro, efficient drug loading capacity, and therapy. Carbon and graphene quantum dots (CQDs and GQDs) were the recent entrants, contingently being assessed for drug delivery and bioimaging. With the advancements, these quantum dots have ignited remarkable research interest and are now widely evaluated for diagnosis, bioimaging, sensing, and drug delivery applications. The last decade has witnessed their remarkable electrical, optical, and biocompatible properties since their inception. It is presumed that both of them have high potential as drug carriers and would serve as the next generation of approaches to address numerous unresolved therapeutic challenges. This review examined the recent advances of CQD and GQD based drug delivery applications, challenges, and future perspectives to pave the way for further studies in the future.

Abstract:This mini-review centers on the framework of GQDs to function as a drug delivery system (DDS), that is both target-specific and efficient. Researchers exploit GQDs for the unique pharmacokinetic properties they possess, that make them an ideal multi-functional drug delivery vehicle. We cannot enhance the therapeutic efficacy of drugs merely by focusing on drug delivery mechanisms. The conjugation of the drug with GQD allows more flexibility in controlling the kinetics and circulation time of drug in the body, the characteristic which is highly regarded in modern therapeutics. GQDs possess properties such as enhanced water solubility, lower cytotoxicity, tunable photoluminescence properties, larger specific surface area, large surface to volume ratio, and ease of surface functionalization, which make them highly effective drug molecular loading cores. Also, the review addresses the various methods of synthesis of GQDs, that include top-down and bottom-up approaches; top-down modes being more feasible and advantageous. The review touches on the various modes of GQD drug-loaded delivery- release systems (DDRS). The review also addresses the limitations associated with drug delivery using GQDs. Insufficient information about the translocation of GQDs limits their application in biomedical field and make it difficult for GQD-based carriers to pass clinical trials. Through this review, we look to summarize the important concepts of drug delivery using GQDs, and their biomedical applications and scope in nanomedicine in foreseeable future

Abstract:Nanomaterials by virtue of their small size and enhanced surface area, present unique physicochemical properties that enjoy widespread applications in bioengineering, biomedicine, biotechnology, disease diagnosis, and therapy. In recent years, graphene and its derivatives have attracted a great deal of attention in various applications, including photovoltaics, electronics, energy storage, catalysis, sensing, and biotechnology owing to their exceptional structural, optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical. Graphene is a two-dimensional sheet of sp2 hybridized carbon atoms of atomic thickness, which are arranged in a honeycomb crystal lattice structure. Graphene derivatives are graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which are highly oxidized and less oxidized forms of graphene, respectively. Another form of graphene is graphene quantum dots (GQDs), having a size of less than 20 nm. Contemporary graphene research focuses on using graphene nanomaterials for biomedical purposes as they have a large surface area for loading biomolecules and medicine and offer the potential for the conjugation of fluorescent dyes or quantum dots for bioimaging. The present review begins with the synthesis, purification, structure, and properties of graphene nanomaterials. Then, we focussed on the biomedical application of graphene nanomaterials with special emphasis on drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, tissue engineering, gene delivery, and chemotherapy. The implications of graphene nanomaterials on human health and the environment have also been summarized due to their exposure to their biomedical applications. This review is anticipated to offer useful existing understanding and inspire new concepts to advance secure and effective graphene nanomaterials-based biomedical devices.

Abstract:Today, nanomedicine seeks to develop new polymer composites to overcome current problems in diagnosing and treating common diseases, especially cancer. To achieve this goal, research on polymer composites has expanded so that, in recent years, interdisciplinary collaborations between scientists have been expanding day by day. The synthesis and applications of bioactive GQD-based polymer composites have been investigated in medicine and biomedicine. Bioactive GQD-based polymer composites have a special role as drug delivery carriers. Bioactive GQDs are one of the newcomers to the list of carbon-based nanomaterials. In addition, the antibacterial and anti-diabetic potentials of bioactive GQDs are already known. Due to their highly specific surface properties, π-π aggregation, and hydrophobic interactions, bioactive GQD-based polymer composites have a high drug loading capacity, and, in case of proper correction, can be used as an excellent option for the release of anticancer drugs, gene carriers, biosensors, bioimaging, antibacterial applications, cell culture, and tissue engineering. In this paper, we summarize recent advances in using bioactive GQD-based polymer composites in drug delivery, gene delivery, thermal therapy, thermodynamic therapy, bioimaging, tissue engineering, bioactive GQD synthesis, and GQD green resuscitation, in addition to examining GQD-based polymer composites.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have extensive application prospects in the fields of optics, magnetism, catalysis, and biomedicine. New carbon-doped QDs are currently being used in these research fields. Graphitic carbon nitride QDs (g-CNs) composed of only carbon and nitrogen have attracted attention because of their unique optical and catalytic properties. g-CNs have numerous electronic properties and can be used as photocatalytic modifiers in a wide range of applications in electrochemistry. Additionally, g-CNs also have biological potential and due to their chemical composition have extremely low toxicity; their blue light emission can be applied to biological imaging, and their appropriate energy level (2.7 eV) allows electrons to be deposited on their surface, which allows g-CNs to be used as photosensitizers in optical therapy. Finally, g-CNs can be combined with other nanomaterials to form composite materials, which can result in new advantages not seen in either of the materials alone. In this manuscript, we thoroughly report the most recent findings regarding the synthesis of g-CNs and their respective properties. We report the advantages of g-CNs conferred by their unique properties and their advantages for application in current biology and medicines.

Abstract:As the derivatives of graphene, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have the excellent properties of graphene, and photoluminescence (PL) properties that ordinary graphene does not possess, which is attributed to quantum confinement effect and boundary effect. Moreover, GQDs perform well in terms of cytotoxicity and biocompatibility. Recently, the synthetic method of GQDs is increasingly diverse, which is usually divided into two main groups: top-down and bottom-up. With increasing application of GQDs in biomedical field, higher requirements on their morphology and size control are put forward. In this paper, we focus on the synthetic methods that are promising to control morphology and size of GQDs. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods are listed and analyzed comparatively. The biological applications of GQDs, including biological imaging, biological sensors, drug delivery and antibacterial agents, etc. are introduced. Suggestions on the choice of synthetic method for preparation of GQDs are given based on the requirements of diverse applications. The remained problems and the development directions in the research of GQDs are put forward.

There are many preparation methods, divided into top-down and bottom-up methods, which have different advantages and disadvantages, respectively. In addition, the modification methods include heterogeneous doping, surface heterogeneity, etc. There are still many challenges in developing GQDs. For example, the synthesis steps are still hard to conduct, but as the inquiry continues to deepen, GQDs will be revolutionary materials in the future. In this work, the literature concerning research progress on GQDs has been reviewed and summarized, while the key challenges of their application have been pointed out, which may bring new insights to the application of GQDs.
Recent Advances on Graphene Quantum Dots as Multifunctional Nanoplatforms for Cancer Treatment

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), the latest member of the graphene family, have attracted enormous interest in the last few years, due to their exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, optical, and biological properties. Their strong size-dependent photoluminescence and the presence of many reactive groups on the graphene surface allow their multimodal conjugation with therapeutic agents, targeting ligands, polymers, light responsive agents, fluorescent dyes, and functional nanoparticles, making them valuable agents for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this review, the very recent advances covering the last 3 years on the applications of GQDs as drug delivery systems and theranostic tools for anticancer therapy are discussed, highlighting the relevant factors which regulate their biocompatibility. Among these factors, the size, kind, and degree of surface functionalization have shown to greatly affect their use in biological systems. Toxicity issues, which still represent an open challenge for the clinical development of GQDs based therapeutic agents, are also discussed at cellular and animal levels.
