Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted wide attention due to their environmental impacts and health risks. PPCPs released through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are estimated to be 80 %. Nevertheless, the occurrence of PPCPs in the WWTPs equipped with Bacillus spec.-based bioreactors (BBR) treatment system remains unclear. In this study, sludge and waste water samples were collected during separate winter and summer sampling campaigns from a typical BBR treatment system. The results indicate that out of 58 target PPCPs, 27 compounds were detected in the waste water (0.06-1900 ng/L), and 23 were found in the sludge (0.6-7755 ng/g dw). Paraxanthine was the chemical of the highest abundance in the influent due to the high consumption of the parent compounds caffeine and theobromine. The profile for PPCPs in the wastewater and sludge exhibited no seasonal variation. Overall, the removal of target PPCPs in summer is more effective than the winter. In the BBR bio-reactor, it was found that selected PPCPs (at ng/L level) can be completely removed. The efficiency for individual PPCP removal was increased from 1.0 % to 50 % in this unit, after target specific adjustments of the process. The effective removal of selected PPCPs by the BBR treatment system is explained by combined sorption and biodegradation processing. The re-occurrence of PPCPs in the wastewater was monitored. Negative removal efficiency was explained by the cleavage of Phase II metabolites after the biotransformation process, and the lack of equilibrium for PPCPs in the sludge of the second clarifier. A compound specific risk quotient (RQ) was calculated and applied for studying the potential environmental risks. Diphenhydramine is found with the highest environmental risk in wastewater, and 15 other PPCPs show negligible risks in sewage sludge.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) pose a growing concern with potential environmental impacts, commonly introduced into the environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The occurrence, removal, and season variations of 60 different classes of PhCs were investigated in the baffled bioreactor (BBR) wastewater treatment process during summer and winter. The concentrations of 60 PhCs were 3400 ± 1600 ng/L in the influent, 2700 ± 930 ng/L in the effluent, and 2400 ± 120 ng/g dw in sludge. Valsartan (Val, 1800 ng/L) was the main contaminant found in the influent, declining to 520 ng/L in the effluent. The grit chamber and BBR tank were substantially conducive to the removal of VAL. Nonetheless, the BBR process showcased variable removal efficiencies across different PhC classes. Sulfadimidine had the highest removal efficiency of 87 ± 17% in the final effluent (water plus solid phase). Contrasting seasonal patterns were observed among PhC classes within BBR process units. The concentrations of many PhCs were higher in summer than in winter, while some macrolide antibiotics exhibited opposing seasonal fluctuations. A thorough mass balance analysis revealed quinolone and sulfonamide antibiotics were primarily eliminated through degradation and transformation in the BBR process. Conversely, 40.2 g/d of macrolide antibiotics was released to the natural aquatic environment via effluent discharge. Gastric acid and anticoagulants, as well as cardiovascular PhCs, primarily experienced removal through sludge adsorption. This study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of PhCs in wastewater treatment, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to effectively mitigate their release and potential environmental risks.

Abstract:The presence of bisphenol analogues (BPs) in wastewater can have adverse effects to organisms in the environment. However, knowledge of the wastewater sources, such as hospitals and landfills, as well as the removal of BPs are still limited. Fifteen BPs were investigated in hospital, landfills, and municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in South China. Eleven BPs were detected in various source wastewaters, and bisphenol A (BPA) is generally the dominant pollutant. In 4 hospitals, the total concentrations of BPs (∑BPs) in hospital wastewater and treated wastewater ranged from 122 to 1040 ng/L. In the landfill, ∑BPs in leachate and treated leachates were 32,130 and 145 ng/L, respectively. In 5 municipal WWTPs, ∑BPs was up to 17,200 ng/L in influents, 502 ng/L in effluents, and 291 ng/g in sludges. The modified A2/O process exhibited best removal profile for BPs, while the UNITANK process had no advantages. The annual mass load estimates of hospital treated wastewater, landfill treated leachate, and WWTP effluents in Guangdong Province, South China, were 630, 9.46, and 4697 kg/y, respectively. The risk quotient values in source effluents revealed low to medium estrogenic risks to receiving rivers. Control measures should be applied to further remove BPs not only from WWTP effluents but also from other sources.

Abstract:The occurrence of 12 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in two wastewater treatment plants in Beijing was studied monthly over the course of one year. The removal of PPCPs by three biological treatment processes including conventional activated sludge (CAS), biological nutrient removal (BNR), and membrane bioreactor (MBR) was compared during different seasons. Seasonal variations of PPCPs in the wastewater influent were discrepant, while in the wastewater effluent, most PPCPs had lower concentrations in the summer than in the winter. For the easily biodegradable PPCPs, the performance of MBR was demonstrated to be more stable than CAS or BNR especially during winter months. Diclofenac, trimethoprim, metoprolol, and gemfibrozil could be moderately removed by MBR, while their removal by CAS and BNR was much lower or even negligible. Nevertheless, no removal was achieved regardless of the season or the treatment processes for the recalcitrant PPCPs. Studies on the contribution of each tank of the MBR process to the total removal of four biodegradable PPCPs indicated the oxic tank was the most important unit, whereas membrane filtration made a negligible contribution to their elimination.

Abstract:The removal of 12 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in two full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and a tertiary treatment system was studied. The ecological risks of effluents from both secondary and tertiary treatment systems as well as excess sludge were evaluated. Primary treatment and ultraviolet light disinfection showed limited ability to remove most selected PPCPs. The combination of an anaerobic process and triple-oxidation ditches can eliminate DEET better than the anaerobic/anoxic/oxic process. Adsorption to sludge played a key role in the removal of triclocarban. Multistage constructed wetlands as a tertiary treatment efficiently removed caffeine and ibuprofen from wastewater and could decrease the risk of partial selected PPCPs. Selected PPCPs residues in excess sludge generally produced higher risks to the ecological environment than effluents from WWTPs.

Abstract:Halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) have been extensively used in various consumer products and many are classified as persistent organic pollutants due to their resistance to degradation, bioaccumulation potential and toxicity. HFRs have been widely detected in the municipal wastewater and wastewater treatment solids in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the discharge and agricultural application of which represent a primary source of environmental HFRs contamination. This review seeks to provide a current overview on the occurrence, fate, and impacts of HFRs in WWTPs around the globe. We first summarize studies recording the occurrence of representative HFRs in wastewater and wastewater treatment solids, revealing temporal and geographical trends in HFRs distribution. Then, the efficiency and mechanism of HFRs removal by biosorption, which is known to be the primary process for HFRs removal from wastewater, during biological wastewater treatment processes, are discussed. Transformation of HFRs via abiotic and biotic processes in laboratory tests and full-scale WWTPs is reviewed with particular emphasis on the transformation pathways and functional microorganisms responsible for HFRs biotransformation. Finally, the potential impacts of HFRs on reactor performance (i.e., nitrogen removal and methanogenesis) and microbiome in bioreactors are discussed. Abstract:Emerging contaminants (ECs), which are present in water bodies, could cause global environmental and human health problems. These contaminants originate from various sources such as hospitals, clinics, households, and industries. Additionally, they can also indirectly enter the water supply through runoff from agriculture and leachate from landfills. ECs, specifically Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are causing widespread concern due to their contribution to persistent water pollution. Traditional approaches often involve expensive chemicals and energy or result in the creation of by-products. This study developed a practical and environmentally-friendly method for removing PPCPs, which involved combining and integrating various techniques. To implement this method, it was necessary to establish and used a field simulator based on the real-life scenario. Based on the data analysis, the average removal rates of COD, TP, TN, and NH 4 + -N were 57%, 59%, 63%, and 73%, respectively. the removal rate of PPCPs by CCWs was found to be 82.7% after comparing samples that were not treated by constructed wetlands and those that were treated. Combined constructed wetlands (CCWs) were found to effectively remove PPCPs from water. This is due to the combined action of plant absorption, absorption, and biodegradation by microorganisms living in the wetlands. Interestingly, the wetland plant reed had been shown to play an important role in removing these pollutants. Microbial degradation was the most important pathway for PPCPs removal in CCWs. Carbamazepine was selected as a typical PPCP for analysis. In addition, the microbial community structure of the composite filler was also investigated. High-throughput sequencing confirmed that the dominant bacteria had good adaptability to PPCPs. This technique not only reduced the potential environmental impact but also served as a foundation for further research on the use of constructed wetlands for the treatment of PPCPs contaminated water bodies and its large-scale implementation.

Abstract:Introduction: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in effluent and residual sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) pose significant environmental and human health risks due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and difficulty in detection and degradation. This study investigates the environmental exposure and risks associated with EDCs in effluent and sludge from four WWTPs: Tangxi River (TXH), Zipeng Mountain (ZPS), Lianxi (LX), and Wang Xiaoying (WXY). Methods: Environmental exposure indexes of EDCs were assessed in the effluent and sludge of the four WWTPs across four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) from October 2017 to October 2018. Detection rates of various pollutants, their seasonal and spatial characteristics, and removal rates were analyzed. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used for source analysis under influent data, and an ecological risk assessment was conducted using the risk quotient (RQ) method. Results: The study found 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) had 100% detection rates in the effluent of all four WWTPs, while only DEHP showed a 100% detection rate in the sludge. Bisphenol A (BPA) exhibited the highest concentration in the TXH effluent during autumn. Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) was detected only in the sludge during spring and summer and in the effluent of TXH and WXY. PMF source analysis indicated industrial wastewater discharge as the primary source of pollutants. Ecological risk assessment revealed a high RQ for estriol (E3) in TXH effluent during autumn, and DEHP presented a potential carcinogenic risk through drinking water. Discussion: The findings highlight significant seasonal and spatial variations in EDC concentrations and removal rates across the WWTPs. The persistent presence of DEHP and the high-risk levels of E3 in specific seasons underscore the need for improved treatment processes and stricter industrial discharge regulations to mitigate EDC-related risks. Further research is recommended to explore advanced detection and degradation techniques for EDCs in WWTPs.

Abstract:As a class of alternative flame retardants, "novel" brominatedflame retardants (NBFRs) have been widely used in clothing, textiles, electronics, building materials, and plastics and are frequently found in environmental samples. Although the use and discharge of NBFRs are increasing all over the world, little information is available about their fates and removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study investigated the occurrence and behavior of 2,4,6-tribromophenyl allyl ether (ATE), 2,3-dibromopropyl tribromophenyl ether (DPTE), tetrabromo-o-chlorotoluene (TBCT), pentabromobenzyl acrylate (PBBA), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo-phthalate (TBPH), and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) in a municipal WWTP in Beijing, China. Four of the NBFRs (ATE, BTBPE, TBPH, and DBDPE) were detected in all wastewater and biosolid samples. The dominant compound in both wastewater and biosolid samples was DBDPE, with concentrations in the ranges of 6.4-18 ng/L and 83-288 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. A mass flow analysis indicated that the overall removal efficiencies were 31 +/- 18% for ATE, 97 +/- 1.5% for DPTE, 79 +/- 11% for BTBPE, 87 +/- 5.3% for TBPH, and 93 +/- 3.3% for DBDPE, but the removal efficiency in aqueous phase only ranged from -43 (ATE) to 57% (DBDPE). The low and negative removal efficiencies of ATE were possibly due to the transformation of DPTE during the anaerobic treatment processes. Under the aerobic conditions, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE underwent a very slow biodegradation. A total of 68-91% of the initial mass loadings of ATE, BTBPE, TBPH and DBDPE were found in the biosolid samples, suggesting that the four NBFRs were removed mainly via sorption in the WWTP.The biosolid was a huge reservoir of target NBFRs, and effective removal of NBFRs during treatment in the WWTP is critical. Abstract:Research on decentralized wastewaters deserves special focus due to the potential abundance of emerging organic pollutants including pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), which might pose serious threats to the local water bodies and even to human health. Constructed wetland (CW) is a common decentralized wastewater treatment technology, with a certain ability to eliminate PPCPs. Nonetheless, PPCPs removal in common CWs is frequently challenging, besides, the removal mechanism remains elusive. Based on our previous study, tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) is effective in nitrogen removal. Here, 3 TFCWs with different modifications (baffle, plants, both baffle and plants) were constructed to treat raw domestic sewage and specifically to evaluate the removal efficiencies and mechanism of PPCPs. 24 PPCPs including 7 antibiotics, 8 steroid hormones and 9 biocides were detected in the level of 1.10 ± 0.29 ng/L-799 ± 10.6 ng/L in the influents. Consequently, we found that modification with both baffle and plants significantly influenced the removal of PPCPs. Moreover, the highest removal rates of biocides (97.1 ± 0.29%), steroid hormones (99.8 ± 0.02%), and antibiotics (90.2 ± 1.60%) were achieved via both baffles and plants in TFCWs. Based on the mass balance analysis, microbial degradation dominated the removal of PPCPs with a percentage higher than 85.7%, followed by substrate adsorption (5.22 × 10−2-14.3%) and plant uptake (1.66 × 10−3-0.44%). Further, 16S rDNA sequencing analysis revealed that the presence of baffle and plants improve the removal efficiency of PPCPs by means of enhancing microbial diversity and changing dominant microorganisms. Moreover, Thaumarchaeota was potentially the key microorganism in the phylum level for PPCPs elimination by TFCWs through LEfSe (linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size) analysis. These findings provide new insights into the removal of PPCPs in CWs.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) constitute a group of compounds that are challenging to break down and potentially pose risks to both ecosystems and human health when they accumulate in water bodies. This study established and operated small-scale constructed wetland–microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) continuously for 60 days, maintaining a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 days. The research aimed to assess the treatment efficiency of wastewater containing Ibuprofen (IBP) and Diclofenac (DCF) using different co-substrates (glucose, sucrose, and sodium acetate) and to analyze the impact of these co-substrates on the composition of bacterial communities within the CW-MFC. After 60 days of operation, CW-MFC achieved removal rates of 89.29% for IBP and 84.10% for DCF. The elimination of IBP was primarily dependent on co-metabolic degradation processes occurring in both the anode and cathode, while DCF removal relied on anodic co-metabolism. Additionally, various co-substrates have an influence on the bacterial community diversity of the anode and cathodes. The possible bacterial groups involved in PPCP degradation were identified. In summary, Glu was identified as a more suitable co-substrate for CW-MFC in the removal of IBP and DCF, while SA as a co-substrate favored the induction and enrichment of EAB in the anodes. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential of CW-MFC for mitigating emerging contaminants.

Abstract:The risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has been paid more attention after the outbreak of COVID-19, threatening the ecology and human health resulted from the massive use of drugs and disinfectants. Wastewater treatment plants are considered the final stop to restrict PPCPs from wide spreading into the environment, but the performance of conventional treatment is limited due to their concentrations and characteristics. Previous studies have shown the unreplaceable capability of moving bed-biofilm reactor (MBBR) as a cost-effective method with layered microbial structure for treating wastewater even with toxic compounds. The biofilm community and microbial interactions are essential for the MBBR process in completely degrading or converting types of PPCPs to secondary metabolites, which still need further investigation. This review starts with discussing the initiation of MBBR formation and its influencing parameters according to the research on MBBRs in the recent years. Then the efficiency of MBBRs and the response of biofilm after exposure to PPCPs are further addressed, followed by the bottlenecks proposed in this field. Some critical approaches are also recommended for mitigating the deficiencies of MBBRs based on the recently published publications to reduce the environmental risk of PPCPs. Finally, this review provides fundamental information on PPCPs removal by MBBRs with the main focus on microbial interactions, promoting the MBBRs to practical application in the real world of wastewater treatment.
Removal Efficiency and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in a Typical Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility in Guangzhou, China

Abstract:The loading and removal efficiency of 16 US EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were examined in an inverted A2/O wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) located in an urban area in China. The total PAH concentrations were 554.3 to 723.2 ng/L in the influent and 189.6 to 262.7 ng/L in the effluent. The removal efficiencies of ∑PAHs in the dissolved phase ranged from 63 to 69%, with the highest observed in naphthalene (80% removal). Concentration and distribution of PAHs revealed that the higher molecular weight PAHs became more concentrated with treatment in both the dissolved phase and the dewatered sludge. The sharpest reduction was observed during the pretreatment and the biological phase. Noncarcinogenic risk, carcinogenic risk, and total health risk of PAHs found in the effluent and sewage sludge were also assessed. The effluent BaP toxic equivalent quantities (TEQBaP) were above, or far above, standards in countries. The potential toxicities of PAHs in sewage effluent were approximately 10 to 15 times higher than the acceptable risk level in China. The health risk associated with the sewage sludge also exceeded international recommended levels and was mainly contributed from seven carcinogenic PAHs. Given that WWTP effluent is a major PAH contributor to surface water bodies in China and better reduction efficiencies are achievable, the present study highlights the possibility of utilizing WWTPs for restoring water quality in riverine and coastal regions heavily impacted by PAHs contamination.
Transformation and toxicity dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a novel biological-constructed wetland-microalgal wastewater treatment process

Abstract:In this study, a novel wastewater treatment process combining sequencing batch reactor, constructed wetland and microalgal membrane photobioreactor (BCM process) was proposed, and its performance on removal, transformation and toxicity reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was intensively explored. Satisfactory PAHs removal (90.58%–97.50%) was achieved and molecular weight had significant impact on the removal pathways of different PAHs. Adsorption dominated the removal of high molecular weight PAHs, while the contribution ratio of microbial degradation increased with the decrease of molecular weight of PAHs. More importantly, it was reported for the first time that substituted PAHs (SPAHs) produced by microbial degradation of PAHs would lead to increased toxicity during the BCM process. High PAHs (75.37%–88.52%) and SPAHs removal (99.56%–100.00%) were achieved in the microalgae unit due to its abundant cytochrome P450 enzyme, which decreased the bacterial toxicity by 90.93% and genotoxicity by 93.08%, indicating that microalgae played significance important role in ensuring water security. In addition, the high quantitative relationship (R2 = 0.98) between PAHs, SPAHs and toxicity exhibited by regression model analysis proved that more attention should be paid to the ecotoxicity of derivatives of refractory organic matters in wastewater treatment plants.

Characterization, Treatment and Releases of PBDEs and PAHs in a Typical Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant Situated Beside an Urban River, East China

Abstract:Characterization, treatment and releases of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers （PBDEs） congeners and sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in wastewater were evaluated along the treatment processes of a typical secondary treatment municipal sewage treatment plant （STP）（in Hefei City） situated the beside Nanfei River, East China. The findings showed that the average concentrations of the total PBDEs in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 188.578 and 36.884 ng/L respectively. Brominated diphenyl ether （BDE） 209 congener, the predominant PBDE in the STP and Nanfei River, could be related to the discharge of car-industry-derived wastes. For PAHs, the average concentrations in raw wastewater and treated effluent were 5758.8 and 2240.4 ng/L respectively, with naphthalene, benzo[a]pyrene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene being detected at the highest concentrations. PAHs mainly originate from the combustion of biomass/coal and petroleum. The STP reduced about 80% of the PBDEs and 61% of the PAHs, which were eliminated mainly by sedimentation processes. The removal rates of PBDEs/PAHs increased with the increase of their solid-water partitioning coefficients. Accordingly, the STP’s effluent, containing some PBDE congeners （e.g., BDE 47, 99 and 209, etc.） and low-molecular-weight PAHs, could be an important contributor of these contaminants’ input to Nanfei River. It resulted in a significant increase of PBDE/PAH concentrations and PAH toxicological risk in the river water downstream. About 4.040 kg/yr of PBDEs and 245.324 kg/yr of PAHs could be released into the Nanfei River. The current conventional wastewater treatment processes should be improved to remove the relatively low-molecular-weight PBDEs/PAHs more effectively.
PBT Assessment of Chemicals Detected in Effluent of Wastewater Treatment Plants by Suspected Screening Analysis.

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the major sources of contaminants discharged into downstream water bodies. Profiling the contaminants in effluent of WWTPs is crucial to assess the potential eco-risks toward downstream organisms. To this end, this study investigated the contaminants in effluent of 10 WWTPs locating in 10 cities of Yangtze River delta region of China by suspected screening analysis. Further, the persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity (PBT) and the characteristics sub-structures of PBT-like chemicals were analyzed. Totally, 704 chemicals including 155 chemical products, 31 food additives, 52 natural substances, 112 personal care products, 123 pesticides, 192 pharmaceuticals, 17 hormones and 22 others were found. The results of PBT analysis suggested that 42 chemicals (5.97% among the detected chemicals in WWTPs) were with PBT property. Among them, 31 contaminants were not reported previously. 9 characteristics sub-structures (N-methyleneisobutylamine, 1-naphthaldehyde, 2,3,3-trimethylcyclohexene, cyclohexanol, N-sec-butyl-n-propylamine, (5E)-2,6-dimethylocta-1,5-diene, 2-ethylphenol, pentadecane and 6-methoxyhexane) were found for PBT-like chemicals. The sub-structures of highly linear alkyl partially explained the significantly higher PBT score for personal care products. Present study provides fundamental information on PBT properties of contaminants in effluent of WWTPs, which will benefit to prioritize contaminants with high concerns in effluent of WWTPs.

Abstract:Wastewater from butyl rubber production is causing an increasing environmental problem due to its large quantity and complex quality. In this paper, two types of wastewaters generated from rubber synthesis, i.e. alkaline wastewater (AW) and cleaning and flushing wastewater (CFW), were investigated. Coagulation and flocculation were firstly applied to remove suspended solids (SS) from the AW. By single factor experiment, the optimum operational conditions were obtained as pH 8, PAC dosage 40 mg/L, and PAM dosage 8 mg/L, by which the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal was 31.5 +/- 22.4%, and the turbidity of supernatant was 2.7 +/- 0.4 NTU. Subsequently, a combined process of hydrolysis acidification (HA) - biological contact oxidation (BCO) - membrane bioreactor (MBR) was designed to treat the mixture of treated AW and raw CFW, according to the biodegradability of the hybrid wastewater. Under the hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 6h (HA), 4h (BCO), and 10h (MBR), respectively, a COD removal of 88.6 +/- 6.3% was achieved. The organic components of raw water and a series of effluent of each treatment unit were analyzed by GC/MS. Biological acute toxicities of the same samples were measured using luminescent bacterium test. Some transformations of organic components caused by the treatment of HA were revealed. The toxicity of the water was enhanced by HA, and removed by MBR subsequently, which indicated the detoxification of MBR.

Abstract:The high levels of parabens (including methyl-, ethyl- and propyl congeners), triclocarban (TCC) and triclosan (TCS) used every year in China might be a problem to the typical wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This study addresses measurements of parabens, TCC and TCS Northern China WWTP and a modelling assessment on the occurrence, fate and removal pathways in WWTP. Per-capita emissions of the three parabens, TCC and TCS to the WWTP were estimated as 0.41, 0.11 and 0.07 mg/d. After the wastewater treatment processes, 94, 92 and 87% of parabens, TCC and TCS were removed. The major removal pathway of parabens was biodegradation while that of TCC and TCS were sorption to sludge. Computer simulations on the fate processes of parabens, TCC and TCS in the WWTP using the SimpleTreat 4.0 model suggested the model could generally reproduce the measurements with root mean squared errors (RMSEs) of less than 10 ng/L. However, the model underestimated the removal of TCC and TCS from water to sludge in the primary tank. These discrepancies were attributed to the uncertainty of the predicted organic carbon-water partition coefficients (Koc) to which the modelling results are highly sensitive. The model predictions using updated Koc became more accurate and RMSEs of TCC and TCS were reduced by 40 and 80%, respectively. The modelling assessment suggests that the SimpleTreat, as a generic model to simulate chemical fate processes in WWTPs, has the potential to be applied to other similar WWTPs in China for estimating environmental releases of parabens, TCC and TCS at a larger spatial scale.

Abstract:The fate and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has received great attention during the last decade. Numerous data concerning concentrations in the water phase can be found in the literature, however corresponding data from sludge as well as associated mass balance calculations are very limited. In the present study, the adsorbed and dissolved concentrations of 9 PPCPs were investigated in each unit of a WWTP in Beijing, China. Based on the calculation of mass balance, the relative mass distribution and removal efficiency of each target compound was obtained at each process. The amount of PPCPs entering into the WWTP ranged from 12 g·d–1 to 3848 g·d–1. Five target compounds (caffeine, chloramphenicol, bezafibrate, clofibric acid, and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) were effectively removed, with rates of 57%–100%. Negative removal efficiencies were obtained for sulpiride, metoprolol, nalidixic acid, and carbamazepine, ranging from -19% to -79%. PPCPs mainly existed in dissolved form (≥92%) in both the raw influent and the final effluent. The sludge cake carried a much lower amount of PPCPs (17 g·d–1) compared with the discharged effluent (402 g·d–1). In A2/O treatment tanks, the anaerobic and anoxic tanks showed good performance for PPCPs removal, and the amount of adsorbed PPCPs was increased. The results reveal that both the dissolved and the adsorbed phases should be considered when assessing the removal capacity of each A2/O tank.
