Abstract:Major volcanic eruptions (MVEs) have attracted increasing attention from the scientific community. Previous studies have explored the climatic impact of MVEs over the past two millennia. However, proxy-based reconstructions and climate model simulations indicate divergent responses of global and China’s regional climates to MVEs. Here, we used multiple data from observations, reconstructions, simulations, and assimilations to summarize the historical facts of MVEs, the characteristics and mechanisms of their climatic impact, and directions for future research. We reviewed volcanic datasets and determined intensive MVE periods; these periods corresponded to the years 530–700, 1200–1460, and 1600–1840 CE. After tropical MVEs, a substantial cooling effect is observed throughout the globe and China on the interannual-interdecadal time scales but an inconsistent cooling magnitude is detected between reconstructions and simulations. In the first summer after tropical MVEs, a decrease in global and monsoonal precipitation is observed. In reconstructions and simulations, an increased precipitation is seen for the Yangtze River Basin, while large uncertainties in precipitation changes are present for other regions of China. Decadal drought can be induced by frequent eruptions and volcanism superimposed on low solar irradiation and internal variability. MVEs affect climate directly through the radiative effect and indirectly by modulating internal variability, such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). However, changes in the phase, amplitude, and periodicity of ENSO and AMO after MVEs and the associated mechanisms remain controversial, which could account for model-reconstruction disagreements. Moreover, other internal variability, uncertainties in reconstruction methods and aerosol-climate models, and climate background may also induce model-reconstruction disagreements. Knowledge gaps and directions for future research are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract. The mid-17th century is characterized by a cluster of explosive volcanic eruptions in the 1630s and 1640s, deteriorating climatic conditions culminating in the Maunder Minimum as well as political instability and famine in regions of Western and Northern Europe as well as China and Japan. This contribution investigates the sources of the eruptions of the 1630s and 1640s and their possible impact on contemporary climate using ice-core, tree-ring and historical evidence, but will also look into the socio-political context in which they occurred and the human responses they may have triggered. Three distinct sulfur peaks are found in the Greenland ice core record in 1637, 1641–42 and 1646. In Antarctica, only one unambiguous sulfate spike is recorded, peaking in 1642. The resulting bipolar sulfur peak in 1641–1642 can likely be ascribed to the eruption of Mount Parker (6° N, Philippines) on December 26, 1640, but sulfate emitted from Koma-ga-take (42° N, Japan) volcano on July 31, 1641, has potentially also contributed to the sulphate concentrations observed in Greenland at this time. The smaller peaks in 1637 and 1646 can be potentially attributed to the eruptions of Hekla (63° N, Iceland) and Shiveluch (56° N, Russia), respectively. To date, however, none of the candidate volcanoes for the mid-17th century sulphate peaks have been confirmed with tephra preserved in ice cores. Tree-ring and written sources point to severe and cold conditions in the late 1630s and early 1640s in various parts of Europe, and to poor harvests. Yet the early 17th century was also characterized by widespread warfare across Europe – and in particular the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), rendering any attribution of socio-economic crisis to volcanism challenging. In China and Japan, historical sources point to extreme droughts and famines starting in the late 1630s, and thus preceding the eruptions by some years. The case of the eruption cluster in the late 1630s and early 1640s and the climatic and societal conditions recorded in its aftermath thus offer a textbook example of difficulties in (i) unambiguously distinguishing volcanically induced cooling, wetting or drying from natural climate variability, and (ii) attributing political instability, harvest failure and famines solely to volcanic climatic impacts. This example shows that the impacts of past volcanism must always be studied within the contemporary socio-economic contexts, but that it is also time to most past reductive framings and sometimes reactionary oppositional stances in which climate (and environment more broadly) either is or is not deemed an important contributor to major historical events.

Abstract:An undersea volcano at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) near the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, erupted violently on 15 January 2022. Potential climate impact of the HTHH volcanic eruption is of great concern to the public; here, we intend to size up the impact of the HTHH eruption from a historical perspective. The influence of historical volcanic eruptions on the global climate are firstly reviewed, which are thought to have contributed to decreased surface temperature, increased stratospheric temperature, suppressed global water cycle, weakened monsoon circulation and El Niño-like sea surface temperature. Our understanding of the impacts of past volcanic eruptions on global-scale climate provides potential implication to evaluate the impact of the HTHH eruption. Based on historical simulations, we estimate that the current HTHH eruption with an intensity of 0.4 Tg SO2 injection will decrease the global mean surface temperature by only 0.004°C in the first year after eruption, which is within the amplitude of internal variability at the interannual time scale and thus not strong enough to have significant impacts on the global climate.
Response of Temperature in Different Latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere to Volcanic Eruptions During the Past 2000 Years

Abstract:Volcanic activity is an important external forcing affecting climate variability. The largest volcanic eruption to have occurred during the last 100 years was the Pinatubo eruption in 1991, which caused a drop in the global mean surface temperature by 0.5 degrees C. Some proxies suggest that a particularly cold summer occurred in Europe and North America one year after the Tambora eruption in 1815. This period has often been referred to as the "year without a summer", which resulted in agricultural failure and consequent famine. However, it is estimated that volcanic eruptions at strengths exceeding that of the 1991 Pinatubo eruption have occurred on 27 occasions during the last 2000 years. While reconstructed temperature data provide an important basis for the empiric study of the climate effect of volcanic eruptions, they have an irregular spatial distribution and do not reveal the mechanisms behind the effects. Recent modeling results have focused on the impact of super-strong volcanic eruptions over the last millennium on the Arctic region, but it is still unclear about the characteristics, sensitivity, and mechanism of volcanic eruptions affecting the monthly temperature changes across different latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (NH) during the past 2000 years. This study conducted a volcanic experiment over the past 2000 years. Volcanic forcing during 501-2000 A.D. was based on the Ice-core Volcanic Index 2. Stratospheric transport parameterization was used to produce the spatiotemporal distribution of monthly mean volcanic forcing during 1-500 A.D. The study assumed that the vertical distribution of volcanic aerosols in each historical eruption event was the same as that of the Pinatubo eruption, and was set according to the vertical distribution of volcanic aerosols observed by radar during the Pinatubo eruption in 1991. Most of the volcanic eruptions occurred in spring (March to June) since the reconstructed data had insufficient resolution to reflect the season of an eruption. The 2000-year volcanic forcing for the volcanic experiment was generated by splicing the two periods of volcanic forcing. NH volcanoes (NHV), tropical volcanoes (TRV) and Southern Hemisphere volcanoes (SHV) numbering 21, 31, and 18, respectively were chosen based on the meridional distribution of volcanic aerosols, and their effects on temperature changes in the NH at low, mid, and high latitudes were investigated. The average TRV intensity was approximately 1.9 times and 3.3 times those of NHVand SHV, respectively, and TRV had the strongest cooling effect at all latitudes. However, when considering the same intensity of volcanic eruption, TRV and NHV showed similar cooling efficiencies at low latitudes in the NH, whereas the contribution of SHV was relatively weak. Cooling over mid and high latitudes of the NH was about twice as sensitive to NHV compared to TRV, whereas SHV had no significant effect. Volcanic eruptions directly resulted in cooling over the low and mid latitudes by the blocking of shortwave radiation at the top of atmosphere by volcanic aerosols. NHVand TRV resulted in sea ice expansion in the Arctic region by reducing shortwave radiation during months 1-24, thereby inducing the sea ice albedo positive feedback mechanism, which resulted in summer and autumn cooling. Volcanic aerosols were largely reduced during months 25-48. Cooling of the Arctic resulted from a decline in northward ocean heat transport over the mid and high latitudes, which maintained the sea ice albedo feedback mechanism. The reduction in ocean heat transport was twice as sensitive to NHV than to TRV under the same volcanic intensity. The results of this study can be used as a reference for the prediction of climate change in the NH after volcanic eruptions and future geoengineering projects. This study also has important practical significance for disaster prevention and mitigation.

Abstract:The mass extinction of life 66 million years ago at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary, marked by the extinctions of dinosaurs and shallow marine organisms, is important because it led to the macroevolution of mammals and appearance of humans. The current hypothesis for the extinction is that an asteroid impact in present-day Mexico formed condensed aerosols in the stratosphere, which caused the cessation of photosynthesis and global near-freezing conditions. Here, we show that the stratospheric aerosols did not induce darkness that resulted in milder cooling than previously thought. We propose a new hypothesis that latitude-dependent climate changes caused by massive stratospheric soot explain the known mortality and survival on land and in oceans at the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. The stratospheric soot was ejected from the oil-rich area by the asteroid impact and was spread globally. The soot aerosols caused sufficiently colder climates at mid–high latitudes and drought with milder cooling at low latitudes on land, in addition to causing limited cessation of photosynthesis in global oceans within a few months to two years after the impact, followed by surface-water cooling in global oceans in a few years. The rapid climate change induced terrestrial extinctions followed by marine extinctions over several years.

Abstract:Initial breakup of Pangaea and opening of the Central Atlantic Ocean during the Early Jurassic resulted in widespread volcanism and was accompanied by significant changes in atmospheric composition, climate and environment of the Earth's surface system. Although profound changes in global geochemical cycles, palaeoclimate, and palaeoenvironments during the early part of the Toarcian Stage have been extensively studied and attributed to the emplacement of the Karro-Ferrar Large Igneous Province (LIP), similar changes in other parts of the Early Jurassic are less well known, especially in terrestrial settings. We studied Pliensbachian aged terrestrial strata from the Dameigou section in the Qaidam Basin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to elucidate climate and environmental changes and their potential driving mechanisms. Three significant climate and environment perturbations were recognized by high-resolution mineralogical and geochemical analyses, with each characterized by peaks in kaolinite composition that indicate relatively warm and humid climates. Each kaolinite peak is accompanied by proxy evidence that indicates anoxic redox conditions, high paleoproductivity, and strong continental weathering prevailed, and coincides with negative carbon isotope excursions and peaks in Hg/TOC ratios that record three episodes of concurrent volcanism. The three episodes of volcanism are correlated with global events and suggest volcanism as the driving mechanism for major global climate and environment perturbations during the Pliensbachian. Each interval of volcanism released massive quantities of greenhouse gases and Hg into the atmosphere, leading to negative carbon isotope excursions and mercury anomalies in sedimentary strata. Global climatic warming induced by volcanism resulted in an enhanced hydrological cycle and can be correlated with more humid climatic conditions, intensified continental weathering and organic matter burial, lake expansion, and eutrophication. Such changes have important negative feedback on the global carbon cycle by increasing consumption of CO2 in lacustrine settings, which in the late Pliensbachian led to the restoration of similar climates and environments that occurred pre-volcanism in the study area.

Abstract:Continental alkaline magmatism has been suggested to play a significant role in releasing deep mantle carbon into the atmosphere, which can greatly impact the global climate. However, the temporal variations of alkaline magmatism and their potential to modulate climate over geologic time remain poorly constrained. The detrital zircon record is a frequently used proxy for tracking secular variations in particular magmatism. Here, we use a novel machine-learning technique to discriminate zircon from carbonatites, kimberlites, and other alkaline rocks. A global compilation of detrital zircon yields continental alkaline magmatic flare-ups between 1,050-850, 650-500, 250-200, and 50-0 Ma. Our estimates indicate relatively elevated contributions of total magmatic carbon outgassing from alkaline magmatism during the aforementioned magmatic flare-ups. We infer that anomalous alkaline magmatism may influence global warming during specific intervals of geologic time, but when they are not that voluminous or persistent extensive arc magmatism may drive warming conditions. The potential of volcanic CO2 emissions to modulate atmospheric CO2 levels and affect the environment of our planet has been recognized. Some specific volcanic types, such as continental arc volcanism, have been hypothesized to play a dominant role in driving long-term climate change. Recently, the efficiency of continental alkaline magmatism in releasing carbon from the deep mantle to the atmosphere and its ability to influence Earth's climate is proposed for certain timescales and supported by empirical data. However, the quantitative estimation of the alkaline magmatic activity over geologic time and its general link to the global climate change remains poorly constrained. Here, we assess the alkaline magmatic variations based on the detrital zircon record and a novel machine-learning model which could discriminate zircon from carbonatites, kimberlites and other related alkaline silicate rocks. The predictive result shows several peaks at 1,050-850, 650-500, 250-200, and 50-0 Ma, which is considered a minimum estimation due to the preservation bias of the detrital zircon record. Our estimates indicate that continental alkaline magmatism may influence global warming during specific intervals of geologic time such as the early Paleozoic and early Mesozoic. Abstract:Extreme climate warmth (hyperthermal) events through deep-time offer prescient insights into how the Earth may respond to present-day warming related to greenhouse gas emissions. This special issue deals with Paleoenvironmental changes across the Mesozoic–Paleogene hyperthermal events and comprises 25 interdisciplinary research articles. In this review paper, we summarise the contents of the special issue, placing it into a wider context, and demonstrate that Mesozoic–Paleogene hyperthermal events were among the most devastating and extreme climate modes in the geological record. Key findings are as follows: (1) Multi-proxy geochemical and sedimentological analyses reveal that widespread deoxygenation of oceans and megalakes was a common accompanying feature of most hyperthermals. (2) Evidence exists for complex linkages between volcanism, warm climate conditions, contemporary carbon cycles, aquatic biogeochemical cycles, wildfire activities, and climate-modulated hydrological and terrestrial weathering changes operating at seasonal, orbital and/or tectonic timescales. (3) Pronounced and rapid biological turnovers in the ocean during hyperthermals may have been linked to seawater acidification and shifts in nutrient availability, while promoting significant alterations in primary productivity, biological pump and ecosystem structures. Despite these advances, future interdisciplinary studies are needed to deliver a more comprehensive understanding of the nature and mechanism of complex environmental interactions within the Earth system, as well as the internal and external drivers that may have triggered hyperthermal events.

Abstract:The study of mass extinctions is invaluable for understanding the effects of extreme environmental change on the different components of the Earth system and their responses and implications. Growing interest in extinctions, combined with new field evidence and analytical breakthroughs over recent years, has enabled us to zoom into individual events, construct their high-resolution chronologies and proxy records and start untangling their cause mechanisms from consequences. This is fundamental to progressing our knowledge, however, how far can we zoom in without overlooking the wider context? To what extent does the prior background climate state influence the outcome and magnitude of an extinction? For example, how would our understanding of the Permian-Triassic mass extinction change if we were to find the late Permian had low or high background CO2? And what was CO2’s fate in its aftermath? We present a new multi-million-year boron isotope-derived record of ocean pH and atmospheric CO2 spanning the Permian-Triassic, which allows us to establish the climate conditions before and after the mass extinction, as well as during the eruption of the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province (LIPs) considered the ultimate cause (i.e. the trigger) of the extinction. We discuss the implications of our new CO2 record, and more broadly reflect on the role of background climate as a generalizable component of extinctions.
Large-scale Volcanism and the Heat Death of Terrestrial Worlds

Abstract:Large-scale volcanism has played a critical role in the long-term habitability of Earth. Contrary to widely held belief, volcanism, rather than impactors, has had the greatest influence on and bears most of the responsibility for large-scale mass extinction events throughout Earth's history. We examine the timing of large igneous provinces (LIPs) throughout Earth's history to estimate the likelihood of nearly simultaneous events that could drive a planet into an extreme moist or runaway greenhouse, leading to the end of volatile cycling and causing the heat death of formerly temperate terrestrial worlds. In one approach, we make a conservative estimate of the rate at which sets of near-simultaneous LIPs (pairs, triplets, and quartets) occur in a random history statistically the same as Earth's. We find that LIPs closer in time than 0.1-1 million yr are likely; significantly, this is less than the time over which terrestrial LIP environmental effects are known to persist. In another approach, we assess the cumulative effects with simulated time series consisting of randomly occurring LIP events with realistic time profiles. Both approaches support the conjecture that environmental impacts of LIPs, while narrowly avoiding grave effects on the climate history of Earth, could have been responsible for the heat death of our sister world Venus.

Abstract:Erosion overwhelmed by eruption Volcanism and erosion can feed into long-term climate change, but determining their relative importance is challenging. Erosion is known to be a carbon sink and is thought to play an outsized role in shifting global climate. However, McKenzie et al. suggest that long-term oscillations in climate may be tied to the amount of continental arc volcanism (see the Perspective by Kump). A global compilation of arc volcano-produced zircons over the past 700 million years revealed good correlation between warm and cool epochs with the waxing and waning of volcanism. Thus, volcanism may be a more important driver and erosion a less important sink for very long-term climate changes. Science , this issue p. 444 ; see also p. 411

Abstract:Abstract Direct evidence of intense chemical weathering induced by volcanism is rare in sedimentary successions. Here, we undertake a multiproxy analysis (including organic carbon isotopes, mercury (Hg) concentrations and isotopes, chemical index of alteration (CIA), and clay minerals) of two well-dated Triassic–Jurassic (T–J) boundary sections representing high- and low/middle-paleolatitude sites. Both sections show increasing CIA in association with Hg peaks near the T–J boundary. We interpret these results as reflecting volcanism-induced intensification of continental chemical weathering, which is also supported by negative mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of odd Hg isotopes. The interval of enhanced chemical weathering persisted for ~2 million years, which is consistent with carbon-cycle model results of the time needed to drawdown excess atmospheric CO 2 following a carbon release event. Lastly, these data also demonstrate that high-latitude continental settings are more sensitive than low/middle-latitude sites to shifts in weathering intensity during climatic warming events.

Abstract:The role of volcanism as a driver of climate change remains widely debated. Following the end-Permian mass extinction, the protracted Early Triassic recovery interval was characterized by extreme climatic and environmental perturbations (hyperwarming, intense subaerial weathering, and extensive marine euxinia) and large carbon- and sulfur-cycle perturbations. Although a magmatic trigger is widely accepted, details regarding the timing and magnitude of degassing and its relationship to contemporaneous climate changes remain poorly understood. In this study, we present new paired carbonate δ13C and carbonate-associated-sulfate δ34S data from deep-water settings in the Lower Triassic of South China to evaluate these issues. Our dataset reveals large positive shifts of both proxies across the Smithian/Spathian boundary (SSB), recording globally synchronous changes in the C and S cycles linked to co-burial of large quantities of organic matter and pyrite. Biogeochemical modeling of the C-S cycles shows that massive carbon release linked to increased magmatic degassing can account for observations of concurrent positive shifts of δ34S and δ13C, enhanced weathering, expanded marine euxinia, and the Late Smithian Thermal Maximum (LSTM). Measured increases in δ13C (+3.2 ± 1.6‰) and δ34S (+7.3 ± 2.3‰) across the SSB relative to their baseline values are consistent with a major magmatic degassing event during the Early to Middle Smithian, whose magnitude and rate we estimate at ~78,000 ± 13,000 Gt C and 0.26 Gt C yr−1, respectively. Our results provide evidence that Early–Middle Smithian degassing was the primary trigger of the LSTM and concurrent biotic crisis.

Abstract:A deeper understanding of hyperthermal events in the Earth's history can provide an important scientific basis for understanding and coping with global warming in the Anthropocene. Two types of hyperthermal events are classified based on the characteristics of the carbon isotope excursion (CIE) of the five representative hyperthermal events in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. The first type is overall characterized by negative CIEs (NCHE) and represented by the Permian-Triassic boundary event (PTB, ~252 Ma), the early Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (TOAE, ~183 Ma), and the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum event (PETM, ~56 Ma). The second type is overall characterized by positive CIEs (PCHE) and represented by the early Aptian oceanic anoxic event (OAE1a, ~120 Ma) and the latest Cenomanian oceanic anoxic event (OAE2, ~94 Ma). Hyperthermal events of negative CIEs (NCHE), lead to dramatic changes in temperature, sedimentation, and biodiversity. These events caused frequent occurrence of terrestrial wildfires, extreme droughts, acid rain, destruction of ozone layer, metal poisoning (such as mercury), changes in terrestrial water system, and carbonate platform demise, ocean acidification, ocean anoxia in marine settings, and various degree extinction of terrestrial and marine life, especially in shallow marine. In contrast, hyperthermal events of positive CIEs (PCHE), result in rapid warming of seawater and widespread oceanic anoxia, large-scale burial of organic matter and associated black shale deposition, which exerted more significant impacts on deep-water marine life, but little impacts on shallow sea and terrestrial life. While PCHEs were triggered by volcanism associated with LIPs in deep-sea environment, the released heat and nutrient were buffered by seawater due to their eruption in the deep sea, thus exerted more significant impacts on deep-marine biota than on shallow marine and terrestrial biota. This work enriches the study of hyperthermal events in geological history, not only for the understanding of hyperthermal events themselves, large igneous provinces, marine and terrestrial environment changes, mass extinctions, but also for providing a new method to identify the types of hyperthermal events and the inference of their driving mechanism based on the characteristics of carbon isotopic excursions and geological records.

Driving Force Behind Global Cooling in the Cenozoic: an Ongoing Mystery

Abstract:The stepwise cooling marks the long-time global climate change during the Cenozoic, particularly since the Oligocene/Eocene boundary. This climatic evolution has been punctuated by several warming such as the peak Cenozoic warmth at 52 Ma, the late Oligocene warming at ∼25 Ma and the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum at 17–14 Ma. Concurring with the global temperature changes, the Asian paleoenvironment has been modulated by the global cooling and the tectonic uplift during the Cenozoic, but what have driven the global climatic changes remains unresolved. In this review paper, I hypothesize that a threshold CO2 level in combination with favorable orbital configuration, ocean circulation, enhanced ice albedo and possible roles of silicate mineral and basalt weathering together facilitated the development of glaciations in the Cenozoic and the past temperature change. The synchronous variations between Earth’s surface temperature and atmospheric CO2 level may indicate that the atmospheric CO2 content is the direct driving force for the global climatic cooling, but this hypothesis needs testing by using high-resolution geological record and paleoclimatic modeling.

Abstract:The Mid-Cretaceous (125~90 Ma) was one of the warmest greenhouse climate periods of the Phanerozoic, and was characterized by extraordinary igneous events, oceanic anoxia, biotic turnovers and mass extinctions, normal superchron, and oceanic red beds. These geological events were the results of the interactions between the lithosphere, the biosphere and the atmosphere. Each geological event would give rise to a special global change which would play an important role in engendering other events through a system of positive or negative feedbacks. This paper focuses on the introduction of these geological events, the global changes that they caused, and especially climate-ocean system. A special effort is given to the potential linkage and feedback mechanism of these geological events in the the Mid-Cretaceous. It is concluded that the igneous events, such as the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces were the primary force to cause the abnormal ocean and greenhouse climate through outgas of CO_2, which would have further accelerated the formation of the oceanic anoxia, biotic mass extinctions, and a change in the nature of the sedimentary record.
Climate Warming in the Latest Permian and the Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction

Abstract:High-resolution oxygen isotope records document the timing and magnitude of global warming across the Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) boundary. Oxygen isotope ratios measured on phosphate-bound oxygen in conodont apatite from the Meishan and Shangsi sections (South China) decrease by 2 parts per thousand in the latest Permian, translating into low-latitude surface water warming of 8 degrees C. The oxygen isotope shift coincides with the negative shift in carbon isotope ratios of carbonates, suggesting that the addition of isotopically light carbon to the ocean-atmosphere system by Siberian Traps volcanism and related processes resulted in higher greenhouse gas levels and global warming. The major temperature rise started immediately before the main extinction phase, with maximum and harmful temperatures documented in the latest Permian (Meishan: bed 27). The coincidence of climate warming and the main pulse of extinction suggest that global warming was one of the causes of the collapse of the marine and terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, very warm climate conditions in the Early Triassic may have played a major role in the delayed recovery in the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic crisis.
New Geochemical Identification Fingerprints of Volcanism During the Ordovician-Silurian Transition and Its Implications for Biological and Environmental Evolution

Abstract:Volcanism had been an important factor in several geological events, usually recorded by volcanic ash layers (bentonites). However, most volcanic eruption materials were dispersed and mixed with sediments as crypto-tephra (invisible volcanic ash layers), unrecognisable by the naked eye, making the role of volcanism in major geological events obscure. Via analysis and correlation of the sources, diagenetic processes, and geochemical features of bentonites, this study established a set of new geochemical fingerprints for cryptotephra identification within shales, reconstructed the volcanic activities in the Lower Yangtze region during the O/S transition, and discussed the impact of volcanism on the Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME) and related climate events. The main findings are: (1) Zr, Hf, Zr/Cr, Zr/Al2O3, Cr/Al2O3, V/Al2O3, Ni/Al2O3, SiO2/Al2O3, and K2O/Rb were relatively reliable geochemical fingerprints of volcanic material input within shales, and useful in reconstructing the volcanic activities in the Lower Yangtze region during the O/S transition. (2) The prolonged volcanic eruptions were sustained between the visible volcanic ash layers and characterised by two stages namely intensive volcanism, during the middle-late Katian and at the Hirnantian/Rhuddanian transition, and much weaker volcanism, during the very late Katian to early Hirnantian. (3) The intensive volcanism identified in middle-late Katian was tightly coupled with rapid biodiversity decline, and the prolonged (3-4 Ma) volcanic activities could have continuously affected the ecosystem, ultimately causing the first pulse of the LOME. In addition, the identified strong volcanic activities at the Hirnantian/Rhuddanian boundary were coincident with the second pulse of the LOME. The relationship between intensive volcanism and the two pulses of the LOME further supports a volcanic stressor for the biotic crises. (4) Volcanism was not only an important factor for marine productivity in geological history but also a nonnegligible mechanism for the Hirnantian glaciation. The methods and the geochemical fingerprints proposed in this study can serve as references for volcanism recon-struction and its environmental implications in other geological periods.
Establishing the Link Between Permian Volcanism and Biodiversity Changes: Insights from Geochemical Proxies

Abstract:Current understanding of biodiversity changes in the Permian is presented, especially the consensus and disagreement on the tempo, duration, and pattern of end-Guadalupian and end-Permian mass extinctions. The end-Guadalupian mass extinction (EGME; i.e., pre-Lopingian crisis) is not as severe as previously thought. Moreover, the turnovers of major fossil groups occurred at different temporal levels, therefore the total duration of the end-Guadalupian mass extinction is relatively extended. By comparison, fossil records constrained with high-precision geochronology indicate that the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME) was a single-pulse event and happened geologically instantaneous. Variation of geochemical proxies preserved in the sedimentary records is important evidence in examining potential links between volcanisms and biodiversity changes. Some conventional and non-traditional geochemical proxy records in the Permian show abrupt changes across the Permian-Triassic boundary, reflecting climate change, ocean acidification and anoxia, carbon cycle perturbation, gaseous metal loading, and enhanced continental weathering. These, together with the stratigraphic coincidence between volcanic ashes and the end-Permian mass extinction horizon, point to large-scale volcanism as a potential trigger mechanism. To further define the nature of volcanism which was responsible for global change in biodiversity, main characteristics of four Permian large igneous provinces (LIPs; i.e., Tarim, Panjal, Emeishan, and Siberian) are compared, in terms of timing and tempo, spatial distribution and volume, and magma-wall rock interactions. The comparison indicates that volcanic fluxes (i.e., eruption rates) and gas productions are the key features distinguishing the Siberian Traps from other LIPs, which also are the primary factors in determining the LIP’s potential of affecting Earth’s surface system. We find that the Siberian Traps volcanism, especially the switch from dominantly extrusive eruptions to widespread sill intrusions, has the strongest potential for destructive impacts, and most likely is the ultimate trigger for profound environmental and biological changes in the latest Permian-earliest Triassic. The role of Palaeotethys subduction-related arc magmatism cannot be fully ruled out, given its temporal coincidence with the end-Permian mass extinction. As for the Emeishan LIP, medium volcanic flux and gas emission probably limited its killing potential, as evident from weak changes in geochemical proxies and biodiversity. Because of its long-lasting but episodic nature, the Early Permian magmatism (e.g., Tarim, and Panjal) may have played a positive role in affecting the contemporaneous environment, as implicated by coeval progressive climate warming, termination of the Late Palaeozoic Ice Age (LPIA), and flourishing of ecosystems.
Loss of Biodiversity Dimensions through Shifting Climates and Ancient Mass Extinctions

Abstract:Many aspects of climate affect the deployment of biodiversity in time and space, and so changes in climate might be expected to drive regional and global extinction of both taxa and their ecological functions. Here we examine the association of past climate changes with extinction in marine bivalves, which are increasingly used as a model system for macroecological and macroevolutionary analysis. Focusing on the Cenozoic Era (66 Myr ago to the present), we analyze extinction patterns in shallow-water marine bivalve genera relative to temperature dynamics as estimated from isotopic data in microfossils. When the entire Cenozoic timeseries is considered, extinction intensity is not significantly associated with the mean temperature or the detrended variance in temperature within a given time interval (stratigraphic stage). However, extinction increases significantly with both the rate of temperature change within the stage of extinction and the absolute change in mean temperature from the preceding stage to the stage of extinction. Thus, several extinction events, particularly the extinction pulse near the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, do appear to have climatic drivers. Further, the latitudinal diversity gradient today and the Cenozoic history of polar faunas suggest that long-term, regional extinctions associated with cooling removed not just taxa but a variety of ecological functions from high-latitude seas. These dynamics of biodiversity loss contrast with the two mass extinctions bracketing the Mesozoic Era, which had negligible effects on the diversity of ecological functions despite removing nearly as many taxa as the latitudinal gradient does today. Thus, the fossil record raises a key issue: whether the biotic consequences of present-day stresses will more closely resemble the long-term effects of past climate changes or those that cascaded from the mass extinctions.
