Abstract:Background The training ability of community preceptors is an important factor related to the quality of standardized training for general practitioners(GPs).In recent years,training programs for community GP preceptors have been conducted in several regions of China,but no research evaluated the implementation of these programs using a comprehensive approach so far.Objective To explore the current situation and obstacles to the implementation of training program of Graded-Supervised Ambulatory Training by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine,and provide theoretical references and strategic support for the development of problem-oriented countermeasures.Methods From October 2021 to January 2022,the implementation status of Graded-Supervised Ambulatory Training program by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine was systematically evaluated based on CIPP model from four aspects of context,input,process and product,using multiple research methods such as content analysis,expert panels,in-depth interviews,expert rating,and surveys.Results The results of policy document analysis and literature review indicated that community preceptor's training is strongly supported by national health policies,and has been widely implemented in China.The training system developed by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine basically covers the content and process of community preceptor training programme,while the assessment and incentive system developed by the community lacks of detailed instructions.From May 2021 to January 2022,ten community preceptors completed 57 times of ambulatory training,each attending four to seven times.The average score of ability of ambulatory training increased from(78.6±5.7)in the first round to(87.8±4.5)in the seventh round.The satisfaction rates of"site and equipment of training""training forms""content of training"and"effect of training"were over 90%among community preceptors and GP residents,yet the satisfaction rate of"proper incentives"among community preceptors was only 20%.Participants reported that the main barriers at present were"imperfect incentive system""difficulties in recruiting appropriate patients"and"inapplicable training content".Conclusion In the initial stage,the Graded-Supervised Ambulatory Training programme has achieved desired results in many aspects,but there is still room for improvement.In the next stage of training,countermeasures should be formulated based on the actual situation of the community practice base to continuously improve the quality of training.

Abstract:We report the sequence of a 8061 bp fragment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome VII. Five open reading frames (ORFs) of at least 100 amino acids were identified. Three show similarities to the amino‐acid sequence of known gene products. ORF G9374 corresponds to the gene coding for the yTAFII145 protein: a TBP‐associated factor whose amino‐acid sequence was previously reported (Reese et al., 1994). The remaining ORF does not display similarities to known sequences. The complete nucleotide sequence was submitted to the EMBL database (Accession Number X84098). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Predictors of confidence in research: a cross-sectional survey of pharmacists in the north of England

Abstract:Objective: Pharmacist-led research is key to optimizing medicines use and improving pharmacy services, yet it is not yet widely embedded into careers. This study aims to identify predictors of confidence in meeting the research learning outcomes in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Post-Registration Foundation and Core Advanced curricula, to provide targeted recommendations for building research capability and capacity within the profession. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional electronic survey, distributed to eligible pharmacists in March 2023 (n = 253). The survey gathered demographic information, research experience, and self-reported confidence in meeting the research learning outcomes in the RPS Post-Registration Foundation and Core Advanced curricula. Pre-determined independent variables were analysed using two binomial logistic regression models (one per curriculum) to identify predictors of the dichotomous variable: confidence with meeting all research learning outcomes in that curriculum. Key findings: Participants were more likely to self-report as confident (versus not confident) with meeting all research learning outcomes in a curriculum if they had recent experience (within the previous 12 months) of research or research-related activities, held a postgraduate research qualification, had undertaken research training outside of a postgraduate qualification, discussed research in their appraisal, or worked in the hospital sector. Conversely, male gender, years practicing, and protected time for research did not predict confidence. Conclusion: A targeted approach, including improving access to research methods training, experience-based learning, mentorship, and linking research projects to key organizational objectives, could be the key to developing research capability and capacity across all sectors and career stages.
Nationwide Survey to Characterize and Compare the Research Experiences of American Society of Health-System Pharmacists-Accredited Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency Programs

Abstract:Background: Many Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy residencies provide research training however, details of this training are not well described. Publication rates have been utilized to assess residency research learning experiences. Higher publication rates have been reported by programs that have implemented a structured research learning experience. Objective: The primary objective was to identify differences in the research learning experiences for American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited PGY1 Pharmacy residencies with reported resident publication rates of ≥20% vs <20%. Methods: This survey was distributed to PGY1 Pharmacy residency program directors (RPDs). Seven sections were analyzed to identify research learning experience differences between programs with reported publication rates of ≥20% vs <20%: (1) program characteristics/research outcomes; (2) involved individuals; (3) requirements; (4) learning experience structure; (5) educational methods; (6) formal education; (7) barriers/RPD perceptions. Variables with P < 0.05 on logistic regression were considered statistically significant. Results: The survey response rate was 31.3% (308/984). Significant positive predictors for reported publication rates of ≥20% were: involved individuals: research director/coordinator, individuals trained in statistics, non-pharmacy medical staff; requirements: Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative training, research seminars/training courses, research manuscript; learning experience structure: research committee; educational methods: didactic residency-led lectures/courses, formal workshops, self-taught online modules; and formal education: manuscript preparation. Conclusion: This study suggests there are differences in the research learning experiences at PGY1 Pharmacy residencies with reported resident publications rates of ≥20% vs <20%. We encourage PGY1 Pharmacy residency programs to consider implementing elements associated with reported resident publication rates of ≥20%.
Can Research Training be Improved in Health Professional Student Curricula? A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Health Students' Experiences with an Integrated Research Training Platform

Abstract:Introduction: Project-based learning is currently the status quo for research training for health professional students; however, it alone is not sufficient for holistic development of research skills. One promising style of intervention that can complement project-based research training is a centralised hub of e-learning resources. Therefore, we explored the perception of health professionals in tertiary education, towards the E-learning hub named 'Health and Medical Sciences Research Modules'. Specifically, we explored (1) the role the Modules can play in supporting students in their research training courses, (2) the perception of the selection of topics and content quality and (3) student engagement with content. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted via the online platform Zoom for University of Western Australia 3rd- and 4th-year Dental doctoral students, and 2nd-year Master of Pharmacy students. Interview transcripts were analysed using the framework method, to identify manifest and latent level themes. Results: Eleven participants completed the interview, including five dentistry and six pharmacy students. The analysis yielded numerous manifest level themes including selection and depth of topics, and four latent level themes: content volume and balance, relevance of content to project, alignment and sequencing, and interactivity. Discussion: The present study suggests the Modules content and the online platform were well received as a complementary intervention to project-based learning. However, issues such as content oversaturation emerged as topics which can be addressed to improve the learning experience. These topics should be considered when considering further implementation of e-learning hubs to complement project-based learning, across Australia and worldwide.

Abstract:Practice-integrated education and professional development programs (also known as residencies), have been available to pharmacists in America and the United Kingdom for many years. In 2016, the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia launched Australia's novel Foundation Residency Program to support the development of early-career pharmacists, and has been implemented across many hospitals nationally. This model was adopted by the South Australian (SA) public hospital pharmacy statewide service and was granted full accreditation. The study aimed to explore key stakeholders' expectations and early perceptions of the structure, role and impact of the SA program and in that process, to identify key influencing factors and strategies informing future program planning and design. Purposeful sampling was adopted to recruit participants who oversee preceptors and residents, across all employment levels and pharmacy service sites. Stakeholders participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Each interview was audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcribed dataset was managed using NVivo software TM (version 10) and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis through the lens of the PRECEDE-PROCEED logic model framework. Thirty-three staff consented to participate. Participants were de-identified with a randomly assigned code number. Three key themes were identified using reflexive thematic analysis; alignment of program goals and visions, culture shift to prioritising workforce development as core business, program structure supports focused workforce development. Participants view the residency as beneficial for development of the residents, preceptors, and the hospital pharmacy workforce. The multisite structure was a strength of the program. Whilst it was acknowledged that the rotations, cross-site rotations, and research project presented challenges, they were deemed worth the investment. Overall, it was felt that incremental increases in program capacity will occur over time, as culture changes, and as investing in workforce development becomes core business. The findings have led to several key recommendations to guide program expansion.

Abstract:Antibiotic therapy of varying dose, type, and duration was given to 11 infants and children with clinically and laboratory proven pertussis, and cultures and FA studies were used to determine their nasopharyngeal carriage of B. pertussis organisms. Nine of the 11 patients were found to still be harboring the organisms at the conclusion of the initial course of therapy. It is recommended that patients with pertussis who are treated with antibiotics should not be assumed to be non-contagious after therapy is completed and that appropriate bacteriologic or FA studies are essential in determining whether nasopharyngeal carriage still exists.
Effectiveness and impact of a structured research approach for health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residents

Abstract:Purpose: Required competency areas, goals, and objectives for both postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residencies and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) health-system pharmacy administration and leadership (HSPAL) residencies indicate the importance of research in the residency program by specifying it as a required part of the training process. Research is critical in the field of health-system pharmacy administration, which is built upon the principles of evaluation and assessment, ensuring that all activities implemented in an organization are evaluated through data collection and assessment to determine their impact. Additionally, the research structure provides residents the opportunity to share research broadly, and it also provides the platform for other institutions to implement successful ideas of interest to them. Summary: This article describes the impact of having a structured, publication-focused research program in an HSPAL residency. The research process has provided follow-up projects (n = 7) and grant participation (n = 6). Additionally, the process has yielded a 66% publication rate, with 21 of 32 thesis substitutes published in various journals. The department of pharmacy at the residency site has noticed that the continued refinement, scoping, and robust methodologies of projects have been essential to their impact in the literature and in dissemination of the accumulated body of knowledge. Conclusion: A structured residency research program has provided direction to HSPAL residents and ensured successful scoping and completion of their research. Intentionality in this aspect has provided HSPAL residents with opportunities for publications, grants, and strong research experiences. Overall, the department of pharmacy has been positively impacted through implementation of services that were evaluated through a structured HSPAL pharmacy residency research program.
"Luck of the draw really": a qualitative exploration of Australian trainee doctors' experiences of mandatory research

Abstract:Background: Many medical trainees, prior to achieving specialist status, are required to complete a mandatory research project, the usefulness of which has been debated. The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of trainees' experiences and satisfaction of conducting such research projects in Australia. Methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was used. Semi-structured interviews with trainees were undertaken between May 2021 and June 2022. Australian medical trainees who had completed a research project as part of specialty training within the past five years were invited to participate. The purposive sample was drawn from participants in a survey on the same topic who had indicated interest in participating in an interview. Interviews explored trainees' overall experience of and satisfaction with conducting research projects, as well as their perceptions of research training, support, barriers, enablers, and perceived benefits. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Results: Sixteen medical doctors from seven medical colleges were interviewed. Trainee experience and satisfaction was highly variable between participants and was shaped by four factors: 1) trainees entered their specialty training with their own perspectives on the value and purpose of the research project, informed by their previous experiences with research and perceived importance of research in their planned career path; 2) in conducting the project, enablers including protected time, supervisor support and institutional structures, were vital to shaping their experience; 3) trainees' access to these enablers was variable, mediated by a combination of luck, and the trainees' own drive and research skill; and 4) project outcomes, in terms of research merit, learning, career benefits and impacts on patient care. Conclusions: Trainee experiences of doing research were mixed, with positive experiences often attributed to chance rather than an intentionally structured learning experience. We believe alternatives to mandatory trainee research projects must be explored, including recognising other forms of research learning activities, and directing scarce resources to supporting the few trainees who plan to pursue clinician researcher careers.
Registrars' experience with research in family medicine training programmes in South Africa

Abstract:Background: Completion of a research assignment is a requirement for specialist training in South Africa. Difficulty with completion delays graduation and the supply of family physicians. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of registrars with their research in postgraduate family medicine training programmes. Methods: An explorative descriptive qualitative study. Extreme case purposive sampling selected registrars who had and had not completed their research on time, from all nine training programmes. Saturation was achieved after 12 semi-structured interviews. The framework method was used for data analysis, assisted by ATLAS.ti software. Results: The assumption of prior learning by teachers and supervisors contributed to a sense of being overwhelmed and stressed. Teaching modules should be more standardised and focussed on the practical tasks and skills, rather than didactic theory. Lengthy provincial and ethics processes, and lack of institutional support, such as scholarly services and financial support, caused delays. The expertise of the supervisor was important, and the registrar-supervisor relationship should be constructive, collaborative and responsive. The individual research experience was dependent on choosing a feasible project and having dedicated time. The balancing of personal, professional and academic responsibilities was challenging. Conclusion: Training programmes should revise the teaching of research and improve institutional processes. Supervisors need to become more responsive, with adequate expertise. Provincial support is needed for streamlined approval and dedicated research time.Contribution: The study highlights ways in which teaching, and completion of research can be improved, to increase the supply of family physicians to the country.
Scholarly Contributions of Required Senior Research Projects in a Doctor of Pharmacy Curriculum

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To determine dissemination outcomes and faculty perceptions of senior research projects conducted from 2008 to 2011 by PharmD students in a curricular pathway focused on direct patient care.METHODS: Preceptors' reported dissemination outcomes of research projects were surveyed and their perceptions of the precepting experience were rated using a web-based survey. Results were compared to those from an earlier pharmaceutical care cohort (2002-2007) and a combined cohort of 2, more research-intensive curricular pathways at the school.RESULTS: The overall response rate was 90.2%. Project dissemination included 61.3% at an institutional forum, 42.3% as a submitted publication, 37.8% as a poster, and 4.5% as an oral presentation. Projects completed from 2008-2011 were significantly more likely than those from 2002-2007 to be submitted for publication (42.3% vs 10.7%, p<0.001) and published (28.8% vs 5.3%, p<0.001). Most preceptors found their research projects valuable to them professionally (88.3%) and to their own or another institution (83.5% and 78.5%, respectively). Ninety-five percent of preceptors would precept again.CONCLUSION: Dissemination rates for pharmaceutical care projects increased over time. Despite modest dissemination levels, the majority of preceptors agreed that required student research projects provide a valuable learning experience for students.

Characterizing the Perceived Need for Advanced Clinical Pharmacy Training in British Columbia

Abstract:Background: Currently in Canada there are limited opportunities for advanced clinical pharmacy training after a year 1 residency. Advanced training programs currently in existence are year 2 residencies, clinical Master's degrees, and Fellowships. Objectives: To characterize the perceived need for advanced clinical pharmacy training in British Columbia and to determine the desired educational competencies to be gained through advanced training. Methods: Current pharmacy residents (academic year 2021/22) and residency graduates of the past 5 years (2017-2021), together referred to as early career pharmacists or ECPs, were surveyed. Provincial health authority pharmacy leaders who hire clinical pharmacists were also surveyed and invited to participate in key informant interviews. Results: Eighty-four ECPs and 22 pharmacy leaders participated in the surveys (estimated response rates 26% and 35%, respectively). Eleven (13%) of the ECPs had already completed advanced clinical training, and an additional 24 (29%) planned to pursue such training within 5 years. Sixteen (73%) of the pharmacy leaders had experienced difficulties in filling advanced practice positions over the previous 3 years due to a lack of qualified applicants, and 21 (95%) believed that more advanced training positions should be offered. The majority of ECPs interested in advanced training (39/60, 65%) chose year 2 residency as their preferred program, and 20 (91%) of the pharmacy leaders agreed that British Columbia should offer year 2 residencies. Both ECPs and leaders rated clinical skills and knowledge as the most important educational competencies. Conclusions: Pharmacy leaders expressed a need for more pharmacists with advanced clinical pharmacy training, and many ECPs were interested in pursuing such advanced training. Most respondents preferred the year 2 residency, with the most common goal being to improve clinical competencies.
Fellowships in community pharmacy research: Experiences of five schools and colleges of pharmacy

Abstract:Objective: To describe common facilitators, challenges, and lessons learned in 5 schools and colleges of pharmacy in establishing community pharmacy research fellowships. Setting: Five schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States. Practice description: Schools and colleges of pharmacy with existing community partnerships identified a need and ability to develop opportunities for pharmacists to engage in advanced research training. Practice innovation: Community pharmacy fellowships, each structured as 2 years long and in combination with graduate coursework, have been established at the University of Pittsburgh, Purdue University, East Tennessee State University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and The Ohio State University. Evaluation: Program directors from each of the 5 community pharmacy research fellowships identified common themes pertaining to program structure, outcomes, and lessons learned to assist others planning similar programs. Results: Common characteristics across the programs include length of training, prerequisites, graduate coursework, mentoring structure, and immersion into a pharmacist patient care practice. Common facilitators have been the existence of strong community pharmacy partnerships, creating a fellowship advisory team, and networking. A common challenge has been recruitment, with many programs experiencing at least one year without filling the fellowship position. All program graduates (n = 4) have been successful in securing pharmacy faculty positions. Conclusion: Five schools and colleges of pharmacy share similar experiences in implementing community pharmacy research fellowships. Early outcomes show promise for this training pathway in growing future pharmacist-scientists focused on community pharmacy practice.

Abstract:Health Education Journal, Ahead of Print. Objective:The Bridging the Gap Between Physical and Mental Illness in Community Pharmacy (PharMIbridge) randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to test the effectiveness of a pharmacist-led support service in improving medication adherence, and the physical and mental health of people living with severe and persistent mental illness compared to a standard medication review service.Method:Using the six-step intervention mapping (IM) framework, this paper describes the development and content of the PharMIbridge pharmacist training programme, an integral part of the RCT implementation, and continuous adaptations made to the process to keep pace with the evolving severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in Australia. A Training Working Group comprising health educators, practitioners, mental health consumers and researchers, refined the programme objectives and assisted with developing content and troubleshooting issues related to training delivery for pharmacists randomised to the RCT intervention arm.Results:A 2-day training programme was developed, which included Mental Health First Aid, simulated patient role-plays, and four pre-recorded modules using lectures, demonstration case vignettes, role-play activities and discussion. The programme, co-facilitated by project team members and mentors (pharmacist and consumer educators), aims to enhance pharmacists' mental health literacy, skills and confidence and empower them to engage with this vulnerable population using a strengths-based approach. Pre- and post-training questionnaires and interviews will be used to evaluate the impact of the PharMIbridge training programme.Conclusion:The systematic stepwise method provided by the IM framework highlights the solution-focused approach adopted by the project team and characteristics including adaptability and resilience which enabled training development and implementation across four Australian regions during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Abstract:Background: The Pharmacy Integration Fund (PhIF) was established in England in 2016, with funded learning programmes or 'pathways' designed to support the development of clinical pharmacy practice in a range of settings. Despite pharmacy staff being well positioned to provide more clinical work, limited research has investigated behaviour change training targeted at widespread practice transformation. Objective(s): To investigate implementation of PhIF learning in practice, using the COM-B model of behaviour change. Methods: An online survey distributed in February and October 2020 included questions on motivations for learning, confidence in target behaviours and impact of PhIF training on behaviour. The October 2020 survey also included questions exploring the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quantitative data were analysed in SPSS. v.27 (IBM). Inferential statistics were used to compare between the pathways (Primary care pathways [PCP], Post-registration pathway [PRP] and Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician [ACPT] pathway). Free text comments were categorised and themed. Results: Three-hundred and eighty-three responses were received (49% PRP learners, 39% PCP learners and 12% ACPT learners). Learners generally had the capacity and opportunities to apply learning, and were strongly motivated to implement behaviours in practice, although learners based in community pharmacy (those on the PRP) were less likely to report receiving employer support. Enhanced knowledge/skills (capacity) were more commonly reported than change to patient-facing activities, leading clinical services and conducting medication reviews with patients with complex needs (clinical practice behaviours targeted by the pathways). The COVID-19 pandemic heightened barriers to implementing practice change. Conclusions: Implementation of a range of clinical practice behaviours following at scale training appears to have been largely successful. Despite this, the community pharmacy context, where funded service opportunities may be lacking, continues to present challenges to workforce transformation plans. More work is needed to understand how training can be implemented to promote practice change for pharmacy professionals in all settings.
Implementation and Evaluation of Entrustable Professional Activities for a Pharmacy Intern Training Program in Australia

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to describe the implementation and evaluation of entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for a pharmacy intern training program in Australia. Methods: Surveys and focus groups were used to evaluate the perceptions and experiences of provisionally registered pharmacists and pharmacists using the EPAs as an assessment tool in the workplace. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the focus group data. Surveys compared the frequency and median responses to the Likert-scale items. Entrustment levels at 6, 13, 26, and 44 weeks were reported for each EPA. Results: Pharmacist (n = 6) and provisionally registered pharmacist (n = 8) focus groups identified the following themes: use of EPAs in the workplace, benefits and challenges of using EPAs, and future direction and recommendations for using EPAs in the workplace. Feasibility measures in the pharmacist survey suggested that pharmacists were satisfied with using EPAs in the workplace. The provisionally registered pharmacist survey showed that they valued feedback provided by pharmacists and that they engaged with the EPAs in the workplace. Provisionally registered pharmacists enrolled in the study (n = 40) showed progression in entrustment levels at each reporting period. Conclusion: Pharmacists and provisionally registered pharmacists reported that EPAs were feasible and could be used in the workplace as an educative tool. However, they highlighted education as an important factor for successful implementation. At each milestone, provisionally registered pharmacists showed progression in entrustment level.
Global overview of pharmacy support personnel training programmes: a scoping review protocol

Abstract:Introduction: A global variation in the pharmacy support personnel training programmes has been observed. The objective of this scoping review is to map out global evidence available on the pharmacy support personnel training programme characteristics, and interface between knowledge, practice and regulatory requirements. Methods and analysis: The scoping review will be undertaken by two independent reviewers. Peer-reviewed journal articles of any study design and grey literature will be included with no publication time limit. All literature published in English focusing on pharmacy support personnel training programmes, entry-level certification requirements, ongoing professional development and apprenticeship will be included. We will search MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, (EBSCOhost) and Dissertation and Thesis (ProQuest), ProQuest Dissertation and Thesis Global and Google Scholar, and reference list of all included studies. We will also search grey literature from websites of international professional regulatory bodies and associations. All studies that meet the inclusion criteria will be imported into a reference management package (EndNote V.20) that facilitates study selection, screening and de-duplication. Data will be extracted by two independent reviewers using a jointly developed and piloted data charting form. Data items will include skills, knowledge, competencies, admission criteria, content, duration, qualification options, accreditation status, delivery models and approaches. Data extracted from the included studies will be collated, and quantitative results presented using descriptive statistics such as percentages, tables, charts and flow diagrams as appropriate. A narrative account of findings from the literature will be presented following qualitative content analysis of the extracted information using NVivo V.12. Quality appraisal of included studies will not be assessed as the purpose of the scoping review is to give a descriptive global overview of the pharmacy support personnel training programmes, and evidence will also be sourced from grey literature. Ethics and dissemination: No ethical approval is needed for this study as it does not include animals or human participants. The study findings will be disseminated electronically and in print with presentations done at relevant platforms, that is, in peer-reviewed journals, in print and in conferences. Abstract:Abstract Background Following evidence published in the Pharmacists in Emergency Departments (PIED 2016) study Health Education England funded novel advanced clinical practitioner training for pharmacists (ACP-p), to support service delivery. Objective To explore experiences and clinical activity of trainee ACP-p, and opinions and recommendations of both trainees and clinical supervisors. Setting Five Urgent/Emergency Care Departments in London UK. Method Longitudinal mixed-methods study in three phases of registered UK pharmacists appointed as trainee ACP-p. Phase 1 (May-July 2019) – early semi-structured interviews and focus group using an experiences, opinions and recommendations (EOR) framework, Phase 2 (January-December 2019) – prospective recording of trainee clinical activity, standardised using bespoke spreadsheet, Phase 3 (November-December 2019) – as Phase 1 but at conclusion of training. Main outcome measure Experiences, clinical activity, opinions and recommendations of study participants. Results Twelve (92 %) eligible trainee ACP-p and five supervisors were recruited. Identified themes were: trainee personality, educational components, length of programme, support/supervision, career transition, university and placement training alignment, recommendations. Success was dependent on effective support and supervision. Clinical supervisors should be allocated adequate supervision time. Trainees, their supervisors and emergency department staff should be given a clear brief. Study participants agreed that the programme could be successful. Trainee ACP-p reported that they could manage 82 % of 713 pre-selected clinical presentations. Additional training needs include: ECGs, X-rays and CT scans. Conclusions Pharmacists can successfully train as ACP-p in this setting over a two-year period. This career transition needs careful management and clear structures. Training ACP-p is a useful way of enhancing skills and supporting clinical services to large numbers of patients.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction The National Health Service (NHS) is confronted with significant challenges in facilitating clinical research delivery.1 Clinical pharmacists were instrumental in ensuring patient safety while conducting urgent public health studies, such as the RECOVERY trial, during the COVID-19 pandemic.2 Numerous studies have reported the positive impact of pharmacy workforce in supporting clinical research delivery3. However, it remains unclear whether pharmacists are willing to take on this extra responsibility. Aim To explore the opinions of UK clinical pharmacists towards facilitating the delivery of clinical research in secondary care. Objectives include understanding the level of knowledge of clinical research among clinical pharmacists; assessing levels of interest among clinical pharmacists towards supporting clinical research delivery; identifying clinical pharmacists’ perceived barriers and facilitators to supporting clinical research delivery; and developing recommendations to facilitate pharmacists’ engagement in research delivery. Methods This study employed a qualitative research approach and utilised convenience sampling based on the researcher’s professional network. Eight pharmacists from two secondary care NHS Trusts participated. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted using questions adapted from the Research Capacity and Culture (RCC) tool which was validated by two clinical trial pharmacists. Keele University Research Ethics Committee provided a favourable ethical opinion. Interview transcripts were analysed to identify emerging themes by using framework analysis. Results The findings revealed that participants possessed limited knowledge of clinical research in general. The key themes identified were categorised into three domains: individual, professional, and organisational, which corresponded with the RCC tool. In the individual domain, pharmacists demonstrated interest in clinical research delivery but lacked confidence. They acknowledged clinical research as contributing to evidence-based practice and enhancing professional development. However, they expressed concerns about patient harm resulting from trial interventions and poorly designed studies generating misleading data. Within the professional domain, pharmacists' capability to support clinical research delivery was limited by inadequate training in clinical research, their clinical skills, and their disease knowledge. They perceived internal and external barriers to participation. It has been suggested to improve the research culture within the profession and promote the role pharmacists can play in delivering research among other healthcare professionals. In the organisational domain, the workplace environment was perceived to present obstacles due to competing priorities and clinical research not being seen to be a core duty by managers. Additionally, awareness of clinical research opportunities was limited and exposure to clinical research-related activities within the workplace was minimal. Discussion/Conclusion Recommendations to address these barriers include promoting clinical research training, developing mentorship programs, creating platforms to connect clinical pharmacists with research opportunities, and identifying roles that allow pharmacists to incorporate clinical research into their routine practice. This research project has several limitations, including the use of a convenience sampling method, a small sample size and potential interviewer bias due to research participants all being known to the researcher. In summary, the pharmacy workforce possesses the potential to support the challenges in clinical research delivery faced by the NHS. However, addressing the perceived barriers is critical to enhancing pharmacist involvement in this field. References 1.
