Abstract:Z-scheme heterojunction research has become a hotspot in the field of photocatalysis owing to the strong oxidative and reductive capacity for driving photocatalytic reactions. In this work, for the first time, a Z-scheme ternary bismuth phosphate/reduced graphene oxide/protonated g-C3N4 (BiPO4/rGO/pg-C3N4) photocatalyst was fabricated for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The optimal mass ratios of rGO and pg-C3N4 were confirmed as 1.2 wt% and 40 wt%, respectively. This Z-scheme heterojunction exhibited an enhanced TC degrading ability with an 80.0% of TC decomposition after 50 min simulated solar light irradiation, which was 3.3 and 6.3 times that of pg-C3N4 and BiPO4, respectively. Importantly, the internal electric field forced Z-scheme charge transfer of BiPO4/rGO/pg-C3N4 composites, possessing higher charge separation efficiency. The formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction was substantiated by radical scavenging experiments and Mott–Schottky measurements, and it was beneficial for the photocatalytic reaction by accelerating the charge separation and improving the redox ability. Moreover, rGO as cocatalyst could not only provide TC adsorption and catalytic sites but also further promote the charge transfer.
Fabrication of BiOBr/MoS2/graphene oxide composites for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic removal of tetracycline antibiotics

Abstract:Bismuth oxybromide/molybdenum disulfide/graphene oxide (BiOBr/MoS2/GO) heterojunction composites were fabricated to modulate the adsorption ability and photocatalytic degradation performance toward oxytetracycline (OTC). The flowerlike BiOBr/MoS2/GO composites demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activies for the OTC degradation. Specifically, OTC, tetracycline, chlorotetracycline, and doxycycline were simultaneously removed with degradation rates higher than 98% under visible light irradiation within 40 min. Radical trapping experiments indicated that photogenerated holes (h+), hydroxyl radicals (OH), and superoxide radicals (O2−) played crucial roles in photocatalytic OTC degradation. Further, Possible transformation pathway and photocatalytic mechanism were proposed by investigating the intermediates in OTC degradation process.

Enhanced adsorption and synergistic photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline by MOF-801/GO composite via solvothermal synthesis

Abstract:The widespread use of antibiotics seriously affects environmental health and safety. The adsorption and degradation of antibiotics in water resources are particularly important for environmental protection and human health. In this work, we synthesized a new composite material formed by metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene oxide (GO) via one-pot solvothermal synthesis using zirconium oxychloride octahydrate, fumaric acid and GO. The structural characterizations and electrochemical tests of MOF-801/GO were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Compared with MOF-801, MOF-801/GO has a smaller electrochemical impedance, a narrower bandgap, and a nearly hundred times improvement in the transient photoresponse to visible light. In addition, the average pore size becomes larger and thermal stability is improved. This indicates that GO provides a good electron transport channel, suppressed the recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and photogenerated holes in MOF-801, and successfully improved the photocatalytic activity of MOF-801. MOF-801/GO was used for the adsorption photocatalytic removal of tetracycline, and the removal efficiency was as high as 97 % at 60 min, nearly 30% improvement over MOF-801, and the efficiency remained above 90 % after three cycles. This work provides a new approach for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in water resources, and a new idea for utilizing the good electrical conductivity of GO to enhance the photoelectric activity of MOFs.

Abstract:With the rapid development of medicine, the use of antibiotics is growing, thus brings a series of pollution problems. To address one of the most heavily used tetracyclic antibiotics, oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), we successfully loaded advanced organic photoelectric material J71:Y6 on the coconut shell carbon (CSC) substrate with high specific surface area, and successfully prepared an innovative, high-efficient, eco-friendly and stable catalyst, CSC:J71:Y6. This catalyst not only demonstrates excellent catalytic efficiency, which can completely degrade oxytetracycline hydrochloride in just 50 min, but also ensures that there is no secondary pollution in the treatment process. The stability of CSC:J71:Y6 ' s performance after 30 experimental cycles, maintaining a high 88.6% removal efficiency, is particularly noteworthy. We explore the principle of its high efficiency through several characterization experiments and also give possible pathways for degrading OTC. This research integrates the two frontier fields of organic photoelectric materials and photocatalysis, which not only effectively overcomes the problems of low efficiency, poor stability and secondary pollution faced by traditional catalysts, but also opens up a new green road for the environmental protection industry, especially in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this work, a novel ternary heterojunction composite with bismuth oxide (Bi2O3), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was produced via a one-step hydrothermal process. The prepared Bi2O3/rGO/TiO2 (BRGT) composite possessed a strong visible-light responsiveness and a high separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, with a specific surface area of 133.1 m2/g. The optimal degradation performance towards tetracycline (94.3% removal) was obtained by BRGT-10 with Bi/Ti molar ratio of 10% and mass ratio of graphene oxide/Ti of 5% following conditions of 0.1 g/L BRGT-10 at pH of 6.7. The degradation rate of tetracycline by BRGT was 4.5, 3.8, 1.4, and 1.28 times that of TiO2, TiO2/rGO, Bi2O3/TiO2, and Bi2O3/TiO2@rGO, respectively. O2− radicals and holes play the dominant roles in the photodegradation of tetracycline. Based on density function theory calculation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry identification of intermediates, the degradation pathways of tetracycline were mostly attributed to the breakage of carbon-carbon double bonds, nitrogen-carbon bonds and rearrangement of hydroxyl groups, and the decreased toxicity of the formed intermediates was evaluated. The BRGT-10 composite owned optimal reusability and applicability. This study explores a facile synthesis process of ternary heterojunction composite and provides insights into photodegradation mechanism of refractory organics from water under visible-light.

Abstract:This work designed a composite photocatalyst of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and Bi2WO6 modified perovskite-like material Bi2MoO6 for effective photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) in pharmaceutical wastewater. Characterization of the photocatalyst g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6/Bi2WO6 (CN/MO/WO) by various test techniques showed that the injection of Bi2WO6 and Bi2MoO6 not only enhanced the response range and absorption of the composite catalyst to visible light but also suppressed the photogenerated electron-hole (e--h+) complexation. g-C3N4 was introduced to increase the specific surface area of the catalytic system while effectively promoting carrier transfer. As a result, the composites exhibited more vigorous photocatalytic activity than the monomer. Among them, the 15% CN/MO/WO catalyst showed the highest photocatalytic activity, and the photodegradation rate of TC could reach 98% under limited 30 min visible light irradiation. The results of total organic carbon (TOC) showed that the ternary photocatalytic system could improve the mineralization efficiency of TC. Therefore, it's a potential solution for effectively treating pharmaceutical wastewater by catalyst under visible light.
Degradation of Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride Using Photocatalysis in the Presence of Fe3O4/rGO/Co-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite Particles: Experiment, Modeling, Optimization and Mechanistic Evaluation

Abstract:In recent years, semiconductor materials have shown excellent potential in the field of photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics. To prepare a photocatalyst with excellent performance, an Fe3O4/rGO/Co-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 tetrameric hybrid photocatalyst was successfully prepared for the first time by means of chemical pre-cipitation using graphene oxide as the precursor. The developed quaternary photocatalyst was used for the degradation of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), and its photocatalytic activity was investigated. The structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, ESR, N-2 adsorption, PL spectroscopy and UV-Vis DRS. The effects of different parameters on the degradation process were studied by the response surface method and artificial intelligence. The results showed that Fe3O4/rGO/Co-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 was successfully synthesized. Under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of OTC was approximately 82% (the Fe3O4/rGO/Co-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 dose was 0.16 g, the pH was 7.0, the initial concentration of OTC was 30 mg/L, and the visible light irradiation time was 70 min). pH is the most influential variable for OTC removal. At the same time, the degradation rate of OTC remained above 50% after 5 times of recycling, indicating that Fe3O4/rGO/Co-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalyst had good stability and recoverability. In addition, the results of ESR and radical trapping experiments showed that center dot O-2(-) and center dot OH were the main active species in the OTC removal process.

Abstract:This study presents a ternary heterostructure comprising graphene oxide (GO) decorated BiOI/CdS, as a highly effective candidate for both the photodegradation and adsorption of organic pollutants. The composite materials were synthesized through a facile solvothermal method. The structural and morphological characteristics of the synthesized materials were thoroughly analyzed using various analytical techniques. Photoluminescence (PL) spectral analysis of the photocatalysts emphasises the strong charge-carrier separations in ternary composites, which is the main requirement for enhancing degradation performances. The photocatalysts were utilized to remove the methylene blue (MB) and doxycycline (DC) from aqueous suspensions. The most effective ternary composite (GO/BiOI/CdS-x, x = 0.4 mmol CdS) resulted in 99.2% degradation of MB within 25 min and 83.7 % degradation of DC within 150 min of light exposure. Trapping experiments identified O 2 •- and h + as the most active species in pollutant degradation. A Z-scheme mechanism, supported by Mott-Schottky plots, VB-XPS spectra, and active species observations, was proposed to elucidate degradation processes. Additionally, the GO/BiOI/CdS-0.4 ternary composite demonstrated impressive adsorption ability for MB, indicating its robust pollutant removal capability. The composite also demonstrated remarkable stability and an impressive ability to be reused, positioning it as a highly promising material for use in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The designation and fabrication of heterogeneous photocatalyst with superior redox capability is an important technique for emerging pollutants treatment. In this study, we designed the Z-scheme heterojunction of stable 3D-Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU, which could not only accelerate the migration and separation in photogenerated carriers, but also stabilize the separation rate of photo-generation carriers. In the Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU photocatalytic system, 88.89% of oxytetracycline (OTC, 10 mg L −1 ) and 78.25%–84.59% of multiple antibiotics (SDZ, NOR, AMX and CFX, 10 mg L −1 ) could be decomposed within 20 min under the optimized reaction condition, revealing the superior performance and potential application value. Specifically, the morphology, chemical structure and optical properties detection of Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU greatly affected the direct Z-scheme electron transferring mode in the p-n type heterojunction. Besides, the ·OH, h + , ·O 2 − dominated the photoactivation process through ring-opening, dihydroxylation, deamination, decarbonization and demethylation in OTC decomposition. Expectantly, the stability and universality of Bi 2 MoO 6 @MoO 3 /PU composite photocatalyst would further broaden the practical application and demonstrated that the potential of photocatalytic technique in antibiotics pollutants for wastewater remediation.

Fabrication of Multi-Morphological Bi2O2(OH)NO3-BiVO4 Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Antibiotic Removal Performance

Abstract:Due to the suitable band gap, good stability, and convenient preparation, bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is regarded as one of potential semiconductor photocatalyst. However, the practical application was restricted by low catalytic efficiency and the poor charge separation. To address these obstacles, a novel Bi-based Bi2O2(OH)NO3BiVO4 heterogeneous composite was constructed and synthesized by a mild and convenient hydrothermal method. The results of XRD, SEM, XPS, and DRS characterizations indicated that the Bi2O2(OH)NO3-BiVO4 heterogeneous catalyst were prepared successfully. The as-synthesized Bi2O2(OH)NO3-BiVO4 composite had good surface properties and catalytic stability. The results of photocatalytic degradation demonstrated that the tetracycline removal capacity of Bi2O2(OH)NO3-BiVO4 composite was obviously enhanced, and the highest degradation rate could reach 95% after 90 min. The results of quenching experiments revealed that both active species of .OH,.O2- and h+ were involved in the Bi2O2(OH)NO3-BiVO4 catalytic system. The possible degradation pathways for tetracycline degradation were proposed by detecting the intermediate products of the degradation process using UPLC-MS technology. Under the interference of pH, common ions and organic matter in aquatic systems, the degradation system can still remain high degradation efficiency. It shows that the Bi2O2(OH)NO3BiVO4 composite may be a promising photocatalyst for practical application. The current study provides new insight into developing more effective photocatalysts for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Developing durable photocatalysts with highly efficient antibiotics degradation is crucial for environment purification. Herein, tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) was loaded onto the surface of Bi2MoO6 microspheres to gain hierarchical organic-inorganic TCPP/Bi2MoO6 (TCPP/BMO) heterojunctions via a facile impregnation strategy. The catalytic properties of these catalysts were comprehensively investigated through the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light. Among all the TCPP/BMO heterojunctions, the highest photodegradation rate constant (0.0278 min-1) was achieved with 0.25 wt% TCPP (TCPP/BMO-2), which was approximately 1.15 folds greater than that of pristine Bi2MoO6 and far superior to pure TCPP. The extremely high photocatalytic performance is attributed to the interfacial interaction between TCPP and Bi2MoO6, which favors the efficient separation of charge carriers and the enhancement of visible-light absorbance. TCPP/BMO-2 possesses high mineralization capability and good recycling performance. Photo-induced O2-, h+, and OH were mainly responsible for the degradation of TC. The degradation pathways of TC and toxicity of degradation intermediates were analyzed based on the intermediates detected by the high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) and the toxicity assessment by the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) prediction. A possible photocatalytic mechanism over TCPP/BMO is proposed. This work offers an insight in developing the porphyrin-based organic-inorganic heterojunctions for effectively remedying pharmaceutical wastewater.

Rational design of TiO2/MnMoO4/MoO3 nanocomposites: Visible-light-promoted photocatalysts for decomposition of tetracycline with tandem n-n heterojunctions

Abstract:In this research, MnMoO4 and MoO3 nanoparticles were simultaneously integrated with TiO2 particles by reflux method preceded by calcination step. The synthesized nanocomposites containing tandem n-n heterojunctions showed superior efficiency in photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic and three toxic dyes including rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and malachite green (MG). The degradation rate constant of TC, MB, MG, and RhB over the optimum photocatalyst was 50.4, 32.2, 42.2, and 34.5 times more than pristine TiO2, respectively. The superior activity of the ternary photocatalyst was assigned to more generation of charges and efficacious separation and migration of electron/hole pairs, which were corroborated by UV–vis DRS, PL, EIS, and photocurrent density analyses. This study revealed that the novel ternary TiO2/MnMoO4/MoO3 photocatalysts are very promising materials for photodegrading industrial effluents in the environment.

Abstract:The overuse of antibiotics triggered a serious environmental crisis, stimulating the development of feasible technologies for removing antibiotics from wastewater. Herein, a set of CeOx@C-TiO2 composites with varying amounts of CeOx from 1% to 15% were synthesized and applied for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) for the first time. It was found that the composites exhibited excellent performance for TC removal by degradation and mineralization under visible-light irradiation. The uniform distribution of CeOx nanoparticles in C-TiO2 permitted the surface contact of particles, enhancing their visible light absorption with a reduced band gap of 2.39 eV and electron-transfer efficiency through the formation of heterojunctions. The amount of CeOx played a predominant role in the photocatalytic properties. The 10% composite exhibited high removal rates of 99.1%, 98.2%, and 83.5% for 10, 20, and 40 mg/L TC, respectively. Characterization experiments proved that Ce mainly existed in its +3 and +4 valence states in the composites. The interchange of these two valence states accelerated the transfer of electrons and promoted the production of superoxide anion radicals and hydroxyl radicals responsible for TC degradation. These findings provide valuable guidelines for exploiting high-performance MOF-derived photocatalysts for the abatement of contaminants.

Abstract:It is challenging to engineer a photocatalyst that can degrade antibiotics efficiently. We have successfully developed a series of photocatalysts by annealing In-MOF (BUT-205) with TiO2, namely (a) In2O3/TiO2-I, (b) In2O3/TiO2-II, and (c) In2O3/TiO2-III. These catalysts, particularly In2O3/TiO2-III, exhibited superior efficiency in degrading tetracycline (TC) under visible light. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of In2O3/TiO2-III can be attributed to the formed S-scheme heterojunction, which promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs. The S-scheme heterojunction was confirmed by XPS, in-situ XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky plot, etc. Compared to pure TiO2 and In2O3, the In2O3/TiO2-III demonstrated an 18-fold and 3-fold higher degradation rate constant (k). Various factors affecting the degradation of TC were investigated, including pollutant concentration, catalyst type, solution pH, catalyst dosage, inorganic anions, inorganic cations, and radical species. Photoluminescence (PL) and transient photocurrent density evaluate the separation rate of electron-hole pairs, and EPR experiments (active species trapping) studies confirmed •O2 − and h+ as the primary entities in TC photodegradation by In2O3/TiO2-III. HPLC/MS analysis revealed the photocatalytic degradation pathway. The MOF-derived photocatalysts efficiency in TC photoreduction results from the formed S-scheme heterojunction, making it a promising candidate for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Exploring novel materials with both high adsorption capacity and photocatalytic properties is urgent in environmental remediation. In this work, a Z-scheme ZnO/Cu 2 O heterostructure with a large surface area of 45.42 m 2 /g was constructed by using the liquid phase reduction method. Compared to pure ZnO and pure Cu 2 O, the as-synthesized ZnO/Cu 2 O nanocomposites exhibited excellent capacity of adsorption and photodegradation for tetracycline (TC), which was degraded 95.3% of TC within 120 min under simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic processes. Theory and experimental analysis manifested that the excellent adsorption-photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the large BET specific surface area, the efficient charge carrier separation and the high redox capability. The results of this study identified the potential advantages of ZnO/Cu 2 O composites for removing antibiotics to purify water resources and protect the environment.

Preparation of 3D BiOI Microspheres for Highly Efficient Visible Light-Induced Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysts for pharmaceutical antibiotic wastewater treatment are subject to increasing attention . Herein, BiOI photocatalysts were prepared by a one-step solvothermal method using ethylene glycol (EG) as solvent and their tetracycline (TC) degradation activities under visible light irradiation were compared. Catalyst preparation temperature, time, and pH conditions were optimized, and the catalyst physicochemical properties were characterized. Solution pH was found to have a significant effect on the morphology, electronic structure, and surface exposed facet of BiOI. Catalysts synthesized in the absence of NaOH presented more regular 3D flower-like microspheres, possessed larger surface area, were composed of many small nanosheets predominantly exposing the (001) facet, and showed better photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. The optimized BiOI presents superior TC degradation efficiency (73.6%) under visible light irradiation, and recycling experiments indicated that the catalysts have good stability and reusability . The active species were investigated by free radical trapping experiments, revealing that •O 2 − plays a major role in the photodegradation process. Possible TC degradation pathways are proposed according to mass spectrometry analysis .

Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X=Cl, Br, I) species with tunable microstructures, abundant surface active centres, excellent electrical conductivity, and good photocatalytic properties have become important basic materials in the field of photocatalysis. However, pure BiOX and BiOX materials modified with a single strategy have limited photocatalytic performance due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Therefore, combining two different modification strategies to synergistically improve the photocatalyst activity of BiOX should be investigated. In this manuscript, iron-doped BiOBr/BiOI heterojunctions were synthesised using a one-pot solvothermal method for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water. The synergistic effect between iron ion doping and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction formation was elucidated by combining photocatalytic experiments and material characterisation. The Fe/BiOBr/BiOI composite photocatalyst possessed a good bandgap structure, which enhanced its visible light response and effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Thus, photocatalytic activity was improved. Photocatalytic degradation experiments showed that Fe/BiOBr/BiOI effectively removed TCH from aqueous solution under visible light irradiation, with the removal rate reaching 99 % after 60 min of visible light irradiation. In addition, Fe/BiOBr/BiOI still possessed good photocatalytic activity after six recovery-cycling experiments, demonstrating its stability. Finally, the separation of photoexcited carriers and the doping mechanism of the iron ions were determined by combining the experimental results and characterisation data. This study provides a new direction for designing efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Heterojunction catalysts offer promising potential for efficient and sustainable remediation of polluted environments. In this study, Z-scheme Bi 2 MoO 6 /NiFe layered double hydroxide (BMO/NiFe) heterojunction catalysts were synthesized using solvothermal process. The surface morphology, crystalline structure, and photochemical characteristics of the synthesized photocatalyst were analyzed by several spectroscopic and electron microscopy methods. BMO , NiFe and BMO/NiFe were efficiently utilized for tetracycline (TC) antibiotics degradation under visible light irradiation. The experimental findings suggest that the BMO/NiFe 15 heterojunction catalyst greatly enhances the TC degradation rate to 95 % under 300 W visible light irradiation for 120 min. The rate constant of 0.0219 min −1 indicates a rapid degradation process following pseudo first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the effect of active free radicals, the recyclability of the catalyst and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of TC were proposed. This novel method opens up possibilities for creating advanced photocatalysts, which can effectively degrade TC in water bodies, addressing the urgent need for its removal from aquatic environments. The present work serves as a primary pathway to design and develop efficient Bi 2 MoO 6 -based direct Z-scheme photocatalysts with promising applications in simultaneous wastewater degradation with hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Efficient photodegradation of antibiotics in water systems is significant for environmental restoration and water purification. In this work, a series of catalysts for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation under visible light was proposed. The hybrids (denoted by CoFe@NSC) of CoFe alloy and N/S-codoped mesoporous carbon were obtained by annealing CoFe Prussian blue analogue (CoFe PBA) nanocubes under different temperatures using thioacetamide as the N and S resource. The CoFe@NSC photocatalysts show substantially boosted photocatalytic activity for OTC degradation compared with that of the CoFe PBA catalyst. Among the three CoFe@NSC hybrids obtained by pyrolyzing at 800 degrees C, 900 degrees C, and 1000 degrees C, the CoFe@NSC-1000 hybrid at 1000 degrees C exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity toward OTC degradation under visible light irradiation for its highly conjugated nanostructure, large specific surface area (733.0 m2 g-1), enhanced visible light absorption capacity, and improved separation/migration rate for photogenerated charge carriers. Approximately 90% of OTC was degraded by CoFe@NSC-1000 catalyst after visible light irradiation for 150 min. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping tests indicate that the photoinduced superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are the main active species for photodegradation. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the active species, trapping experiments and ESR analysis. The biotoxicity of photocatalytic degradation products and residual antibiotic were also explored using E. coli as the reference organism. This work offers new insight into the development of novel catalysts for photodegradation of antibiotics.
