Abstract:Autonomous navigation of a robot in agricultural fields is essential for every task from crop monitoring to weed management and fertilizer application. Many current approaches rely on accurate GPS, however, such technology is expensive and also prone to failure (e.g. through lack of coverage). As such, autonomous navigation through sensors that can interpret their environment (such as cameras) is important to achieve the goal of autonomy in agriculture. In this paper, we introduce a purely vision-based navigation scheme that is able to reliably guide the robot through row-crop fields without manual intervention. Independent of any global localization or mapping, this approach is able to accurately follow the crop-rows and switch between the rows, only using onboard cameras. With the help of a novel crop-row detection and a novel crop-row switching technique, our navigation scheme can be deployed in a wide range of fields with different canopy types in various growth stages with limited parameter tuning, creating a crop agnostic navigation approach. We have extensively evaluated our approach in three different fields under various illumination conditions using our agricultural robotic platform (BonnBot-I). For navigation, our approach is evaluated on five crop types and achieves an average navigation accuracy of 3.82cm relative to manual teleoperation.

Towards Over-Canopy Autonomous Navigation: Crop-Agnostic LiDAR-Based Crop-Row Detection in Arable Fields

Abstract:Autonomous navigation is crucial for various robotics applications in agriculture. However, many existing methods depend on RTK-GPS devices, which can be susceptible to loss of radio signal or intermittent reception of corrections from the internet. Consequently, research has increasingly focused on using RGB cameras for crop-row detection, though challenges persist when dealing with grown plants. This paper introduces a LiDAR-based navigation system that can achieve crop-agnostic over-canopy autonomous navigation in row-crop fields, even when the canopy fully blocks the inter-row spacing. Our algorithm can detect crop rows across diverse scenarios, encompassing various crop types, growth stages, the presence of weeds, curved rows, and discontinuities. Without utilizing a global localization method (i.e., based on GPS), our navigation system can perform autonomous navigation in these challenging scenarios, detect the end of the crop rows, and navigate to the next crop row autonomously, providing a crop-agnostic approach to navigate an entire field. The proposed navigation system has undergone tests in various simulated and real agricultural fields, achieving an average cross-track error of 3.55cm without human intervention. The system has been deployed on a customized UGV robot, which can be reconfigured depending on the field conditions.

Abstract:Vision-based navigation systems in arable fields are an underexplored area in agricultural robot navigation. Vision systems deployed in arable fields face challenges such as fluctuating weed density, varying illumination levels, growth stages and crop row irregularities. Current solutions are often crop-specific and aimed to address limited individual conditions such as illumination or weed density. Moreover, the scarcity of comprehensive datasets hinders the development of generalised machine learning systems for navigating these fields. This paper proposes a suite of deep learning-based perception algorithms using affordable vision sensors for vision-based navigation in arable fields. Initially, a comprehensive dataset that captures the intricacies of multiple crop seasons, various crop types, and a range of field variations was compiled. Next, this study delves into the creation of robust infield perception algorithms capable of accurately detecting crop rows under diverse conditions such as different growth stages, weed density, and varying illumination. Further, it investigates the integration of crop row following with vision-based crop row switching for efficient field-scale navigation. The proposed infield navigation system was tested in commercial arable fields traversing a total distance of 4.5 km with average heading and cross-track errors of 1.24° and 3.32 cm respectively.

Abstract:Autonomous weeding robots are a productive and more sustainable solution over traditional, labor-intensive weed control practices such as chemical weeding that are harmful to the environment when used excessively. To achieve a fully autonomous weed control operation, the robots need to be precisely guided through the crop rows without damaging rice plants and they should be able to detect the end of the crop row and make turns to change rows. This research attempted to integrate GNSS, compass and machine vision into a rice field weeding robot to achieve fully autonomous navigation for the weeding operation. A novel crop row detection algorithm was developed to extract the four immediate rows spanned by a camera mounted at the front of the robot. The extracted rows were used to determine a guide-line that was used to precisely maneuver the robot along the crop rows with an accuracy of less than a hundred millimeters in variable circumstances such as weed intensity, growth stage of plants and weather conditions. The GNSS and compass were used for locating the robot within the field. A state-based control system was implemented to integrate the GNSS, compass and vision guidance to efficiently navigate the weeding robot through a pre-determined route that covers the entire field without damaging rice plants. The proposed system was experimentally determined to deliver good performance in low weed concentrations with an accuracy of less than 2.5° in heading compensation and an average deviation from the ideal path of 45.9 mm. Though this accuracy dropped when the weed concentration increased, the system was still able to navigate the robot without inflicting any serious damage to the plants.

Evaluation of a Stereo Vision System for Cotton Row Detection and Boll Location Estimation in Direct Sunlight

Abstract:Cotton harvesting is performed by using expensive combine harvesters which makes it difficult for small to medium-size cotton farmers to grow cotton economically. Advances in robotics have provided an opportunity to harvest cotton using small and robust autonomous rovers that can be deployed in the field as a “swarm” of harvesters, with each harvester responsible for a small hectarage. However, rovers need high-performance navigation to obtain the necessary precision for harvesting. Current precision harvesting systems depend heavily on Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) to navigate rows of crops. However, GNSS cannot be the only method used to navigate the farm because for robots to work as a coordinated multiagent unit on the same farm because they also require visual systems to navigate, avoid collisions, and to accommodate plant growth and canopy changes. Hence, the optical system remains to be a complementary method for increasing the efficiency of the GNSS. In this study, visual detection of cotton rows and bolls was developed, demonstrated, and evaluated. A pixel-based algorithm was used to calculate and determine the upper and lower part of the canopy of the cotton rows by assuming the normal distribution of the high and low depth pixels. The left and right rows were detected by using perspective transformation and pixel-based sliding window algorithms. Then, the system determined the Bayesian score of the detection and calculated the center of the rows for the smooth navigation of the rover. This visual system achieved an accuracy of 92.3% and an F1 score of 0.951 for the detection of cotton rows. Furthermore, the same stereo vision system was used to detect the location of the cotton bolls. A comparison of the cotton bolls’ distances above the ground to the manual measurements showed that the system achieved an average R2 value of 99% with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 9 mm when stationary and 95% with an RMSE of 34 mm when moving at approximately 0.64 km/h. The rover might have needed to stop several times to improve its detection accuracy or move more slowly. Therefore, the accuracy obtained in row detection and boll location estimation is favorable for use in a cotton harvesting robotic system. Future research should involve testing of the models in a large farm with undefoliated plants.

Abstract:Robotic autonomous operating systems in global n40avigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied agricultural environments (green houses, feeding farms, and under canopy) have recently become a research hotspot. 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) locates the robot depending on environment and has become a popular perception sensor to navigate agricultural robots. A rapid development methodology of a 3D LiDAR-based navigation system for agricultural robots is proposed in this study, which includes: (i) individual plant clustering and its location estimation method (improved Euclidean clustering algorithm); (ii) robot path planning and tracking control method (Lyapunov direct method); (iii) construction of a robot-LiDAR-plant unified virtual simulation environment (combination use of Gazebo and SolidWorks); and (vi) evaluating the accuracy of the navigation system (triple evaluation: virtual simulation test, physical simulation test, and field test). Applying the proposed methodology, a navigation system for a grape field operation robot has been developed. The virtual simulation test, physical simulation test with GNSS as ground truth, and field test with path tracer showed that the robot could travel along the planned path quickly and smoothly. The maximum and mean absolute errors of path tracking are 2.72 cm, 1.02 cm; 3.12 cm, 1.31 cm, respectively, which meet the accuracy requirements of field operations, establishing the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology has good scalability and can be implemented in a wide variety of field robot, which is promising to shorten the development cycle of agricultural robot navigation system working in GNSS-denied environment.

Abstract:The intensive advances in robotics have deeply facilitated the accomplishment of tedious and repetitive tasks in our daily lives. If robots are now well established in the manufacturing industry, thanks to the knowledge of the environment, this is still not fully the case for outdoor applications such as in agriculture, as many parameters are varying (kind of vegetation, perception conditions, wheel–soil interaction, etc.) The use of robots in such a context is nevertheless important since the reduction of environmental impacts requires the use of alternative practices (such as agroecological production or organic production), which require highly accurate work and frequent operations. As a result, the design of robots for agroecology implies notably the availability of highly accurate autonomous navigation processes related to crop and adapting to their variability. This paper proposes several contributions to the problem of crop row tracking using a four-wheel-steering mobile robot, which straddles the crops. It uses a 2D LiDAR allowing the detection of crop rows in 3D thanks to the robot motion. This permits the definition of a reference trajectory that is followed using two different control approaches. The main targeted application is navigation in vineyard fields, to achieve several kinds of operation, such as monitoring, cropping, or accurate spraying. In the first part, a row detection strategy based on a 2D LiDAR inclined in front of the robot to match a predefined shape of the vineyard row in the robot framework is described. The successive detected regions of interest are aggregated along the local robot motion, through the system odometry. This permits the computation of a local trajectory to be followed by a robot. In a second part, a control architecture that allows the control of a four-wheel-steering mobile robot is proposed. Two different strategies are investigated, one is based on a backstepping approach, while the second considers independently the regulation of front and rear steering axle position. The results of these control laws are then compared in an extended simulation framework, using a 3D reconstruction of actual vineyards in different seasons.

Abstract:Agricultural robot technology is now developing explosively. Autonomous navigation is the key technology of agricultural robots. Compared with that of driverless cars, the environment of the agricultural robot is complex and diverse, and their navigation modes and core technologies are significantly different. Our research team of the agricultural robot, Jiangsu University has proposed the overall technical framework for the autonomous navigation of agricultural robots in fields, orchards, and greenhouses, and has made important research progress: (1) Aiming at the large-scale farms, we have broken through the autonomous forward-turn planning and vehicle-working part cooperative control technology based on Beidou RTK positioning, and pioneered the unmanned working in paddy fields in China. (2) Since pre-built map could not meet the need of a cross-regional operation, and the global planning method based on satellite positioning makes it complex to realize multi-machine parallel operation or master-slave collaboration, the portable base station of autonomous navigation technology based on UWB sensors of agricultural machinery in the field was put forward. It has made great breakthroughs in the realization of cross-regional single-machine operation technology, distributed multi-machine parallel operation technology, and cluster master-slave cooperative operation technology.(3) Aiming at harvest operations of crops, the local-global integrated navigation method based on depth vision and magnetic information was constructed, the harvesting path planning method based on harvesting edge, lodging area, and magnetic information fusion was proposed. It can realize autonomous navigation and self-adaptive harvest of different sites and all kinds of lodge morphology crops. (4) Aiming at the vineyard environment of the slender discreted stems, the navigation method combining laser scanning with an electronic compass was put forward. In this technology, autonomous diagnosis of pose/posture of the vehicle in the environment, fast driving to navigation line, and route planning in real-time. It can realize the robot's autonomous work in the vineyard. (5) Aiming at the environment of the continuous structured corridor in the greenhouse and animals/plants factory environment, the navigation method of sided arc array of photoelectric switches was put forward. It can realize curb-following navigation based on combination judgment from the numbers of triggered photoelectric switches and the center sequence number of triggered photoelectric switches to accomplish heading deviation and lateral deviation synchronous detection. Our research team of the agricultural robots, Jiangsu University is accelerating research on different types of autonomous navigation in technology and equipment, meanwhile, it is hopeful to provide differentiated navigation solutions for the rapid development of agricultural robot technology in China.

Headland Turning Path Planning for Agricultural Vehicles Based on Panoramic Surround View Images

Abstract:Headland turning poses a significant challenge to the vision-based autonomous navigation of agricultural vehicles. During a turning process, a single forward-looking vision sensor with limited field of view inevitably loses the perception of the headland area. Unfortunately, no practical pure vision-based headland turning method has been proposed yet. To address this challenge, a panoramic surround view (PSV) system incorporating four fisheye cameras positioned at the front, rear, left, and right of an agricultural vehicle was developed in this study. The stitched PSV image provided a comprehensive 360-degree bird’s-eye view of the vehicle’s surroundings, enabling a continuous perception of the relative position between the agricultural vehicle and the headland. Detection of the headland area in PSV images was accomplished through semantic segmentation. In addition, a headland turning path planning algorithm comprising three steering manoeuvres was devised. Leveraging the lightweight model CGNet, the mean intersection over union (mIoU) for the semantic segmentation of the headland achieving a remarkable 92.84%. The average deviation of the detected headland boundary was 5.63 pixels in an image with a resolution of 640*340. The proposed algorithm demonstrated an inference speed of 18.45 frames per second. Field navigation experiments were conducted, and a successful completion of headland turns further validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Non-linear Model Predictive Control for Multi-task GPS-free Autonomous Navigation in Vineyards

Abstract:Autonomous navigation is the foundation of agricultural robots. This paper focuses on developing an advanced autonomous navigation system for a rover operating within row-based crops. A position-agnostic system is proposed to address the challenging situation when standard localization methods, like GPS, fail due to unfavorable weather or obstructed signals. This breakthrough is especially vital in densely vegetated regions, including areas covered by thick tree canopies or pergola vineyards. This work proposed a novel system that leverages a single RGB-D camera and a Non-linear Model Predictive Control strategy to navigate through entire rows, adapting to various crop spacing. The presented solution demonstrates versatility in handling diverse crop densities, environmental factors, and multiple navigation tasks to support agricultural activities at an extremely cost-effective implementation. Experimental validation in simulated and real vineyards underscores the system's robustness and competitiveness in both standard row traversal and target objects approach.

Vision-based Vineyard Navigation Solution with Automatic Annotation

Abstract:Autonomous navigation is the key to achieving the full automation of agricultural research and production management (e.g., disease management and yield prediction) using agricultural robots. In this paper, we introduced a vision-based autonomous navigation framework for agriculture robots in trellised cropping systems such as vineyards. To achieve this, we proposed a novel learning-based method to estimate the path traversibility heatmap directly from an RGB-D image and subsequently convert the heatmap to a preferred traversal path. An automatic annotation pipeline was developed to form a training dataset by projecting RTK GPS paths collected during the first setup in a vineyard in corresponding RGB-D images as ground-truth path annotations, allowing a fast model training and fine-tuning without costly human annotation. The trained path detection model was used to develop a full navigation framework consisting of row tracking and row switching modules, enabling a robot to traverse within a crop row and transit between crop rows to cover an entire vineyard autonomously. Extensive field trials were conducted in three different vineyards to demonstrate that the developed path detection model and navigation framework provided a cost-effective, accurate, and robust autonomous navigation solution in the vineyard and could be generalized to unseen vineyards with stable performance.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of autonomous navigation in agricultural fields. It proposes a localization and mapping framework based on semantic place classification and key location estimation, which together build a hybrid topological map. This map benefits from generic partitioning of the field, which contains a finite set of well-differentiated workspaces and, through a semantic analysis, it is possible to estimate in a probabilistic way the position (state) of a mobile system in the field. Moreover, this map integrates both metric (key locations) and semantic features (working areas). One of its advantages is that a full and precise map prior to navigation is not necessary. The identification of the key locations and working areas is carried out by a perception system based on 2D LIDAR and RGB cameras. Fusing these data with odometry allows the robot to be located in the topological map. The approach is assessed through off-line data recorded in real conditions in diverse fields during different seasons. It exploits a real-time object detector based on a convolutional neural network called you only look once, version 3, which has been trained to classify a considerable number of crops, including market-garden crops such as broccoli and cabbage, and to identify grapevine trunks. The results show the interest in the approach, which allows (i) obtaining a simple and easy-to-update map, (ii) avoiding the use of artificial landmarks, and thus (iii) improving the autonomy of agricultural robots.

Abstract:Obstacle avoidance control and navigation in unstructured agricultural environments are key to the safe operation of autonomous robots, especially for agricultural machinery, where cost and stability should be taken into account. In this paper, we designed a navigation and obstacle avoidance system for agricultural robots based on LiDAR and a vision camera. The improved clustering algorithm is used to quickly and accurately analyze the obstacle information collected by LiDAR in real time. Also, the convex hull algorithm is combined with the rotating calipers algorithm to obtain the maximum diameter of the convex polygon of the clustered data. Obstacle avoidance paths and course control methods are developed based on the danger zones of obstacles. Moreover, by performing color space analysis and feature analysis on the complex orchard environment images, the optimal H-component of HSV color space is selected to obtain the ideal vision-guided trajectory images based on mean filtering and corrosion treatment. Finally, the proposed algorithm is integrated into the Three-Wheeled Mobile Differential Robot (TWMDR) platform to carry out obstacle avoidance experiments, and the results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm. The research conclusion can achieve satisfactory results in precise obstacle avoidance and intelligent navigation control of agricultural robots.

Abstract:Small autonomous robotic platforms can be utilized in agricultural environments to target weeds in their early stages of growth and eliminate them. Autonomous solutions reduce the need for labor, cut costs, and enhance productivity. To eliminate the need for chemicals in weeding, and other solutions that can interfere with the crop’s growth, lasers have emerged as a viable alternative. Lasers can precisely target weed stems, effectively eliminating or stunting their growth. In this study an autonomous robot that employs a diode laser for weed elimination was developed and its performance in removing weeds in a cotton field was evaluated. The robot utilized a combination of visual servoing for motion control, the Robotic operating system (ROS) finite state machine implementation (SMACH) to manage its states, actions, and transitions. Furthermore, the robot utilized deep learning for weed detection, as well as navigation when combined with GPS and dynamic window approach path planning algorithm. Employing its 2D cartesian arm, the robot positioned the laser diode attached to a rotating pan-and-tilt mechanism for precise weed targeting. In a cotton field, without weed tracking, the robot achieved an overall weed elimination rate of 47% in a single pass, with a 9.5 second cycle time per weed treatment when the laser diode was positioned parallel to the ground. When the diode was placed at a 10°downward angle from the horizontal axis, the robot achieved a 63% overall elimination rate on a single pass with 8 seconds cycle time per weed treatment. With the implementation of weed tracking using DeepSORT tracking algorithm, the robot achieved an overall weed elimination rate of 72.35% at 8 seconds cycle time per weed treatment. With a strong potential for generalizing to other crops, these results provide strong evidence of the feasibility of autonomous weed elimination using low-cost diode lasers and small robotic platforms.

Abstract:GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation in agriculture is facing many challenges, such as weak signals in orchards and the high cost for small plots of farmland. With the reduction of camera cost and the emergence of excellent visual algorithms, visual navigation can solve the above problems. Visual navigation is a navigation technology that uses cameras to sense environmental information as the basis of an aircraft flight. It is mainly divided into five parts: Image acquisition, landmark recognition, route planning, flight control, and obstacle avoidance. Here, landmarks are plant canopy, buildings, mountains, and rivers, with unique geographical characteristics in a place. During visual navigation, landmark location and route tracking are key links. When there are significant color-differences (for example, the differences among red, green, and blue) between a landmark and the background, the landmark can be recognized based on classical visual algorithms. However, in the case of non-significant color-differences (for example, the differences between dark green and vivid green) between a landmark and the background, there are no robust and high-precision methods for landmark identification. In view of the above problem, visual navigation in a maize field is studied. First, the block recognition method based on fine-tuned Inception-V3 is developed; then, the maize canopy landmark is recognized based on the above method; finally, local navigation lines are extracted from the landmarks based on the maize canopy grayscale gradient law. The results show that the accuracy is 0.9501. When the block number is 256, the block recognition method achieves the best segmentation. The average segmentation quality is 0.87, and time is 0.251 s. This study suggests that stable visual semantic navigation can be achieved under the near color background. It will be an important reference for the navigation of plant protection UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle).

With the development of electronics and information technology, machine vision technology has become a promising tool for real-time and accurate navigation of agricultural robots. Due to low hardware cost and rich visual information, machine vision technology has been intensively studied and widely used in the field of autonomous navigation agricultural robots. Aiming at the special complexity of agricultural environment, this paper reviews the research advances of agricultural autonomous vehicle and robot navigation and guidance based on machine vision. A detailed summary of the development and characteristics of various vision sensors and systems is given. Key visual navigation information processing technologies such as filtering-based data computation, segmentation-based data computation and line-detection-based data computation for agricultural robots are discussed. Special attention is paid to the application of vision-based navigation technology for agricultural robots, i.e., environment perception and mapping, robot localization, and path planning. Finally, the challenges of machine vision in agricultural robot navigation are discussed, and the future development of vision sensor technology and autonomous navigation technology is prospected.

Deep learning-based Crop Row Detection for Infield Navigation of Agri-Robots

Abstract:Autonomous navigation in agricultural environments is challenged by varying field conditions that arise in arable fields. State-of-the-art solutions for autonomous navigation in such environments require expensive hardware such as RTK-GNSS. This paper presents a robust crop row detection algorithm that withstands such field variations using inexpensive cameras. Existing datasets for crop row detection does not represent all the possible field variations. A dataset of sugar beet images was created representing 11 field variations comprised of multiple grow stages, light levels, varying weed densities, curved crop rows and discontinuous crop rows. The proposed pipeline segments the crop rows using a deep learning-based method and employs the predicted segmentation mask for extraction of the central crop using a novel central crop row selection algorithm. The novel crop row detection algorithm was tested for crop row detection performance and the capability of visual servoing along a crop row. The visual servoing-based navigation was tested on a realistic simulation scenario with the real ground and plant textures. Our algorithm demonstrated robust vision-based crop row detection in challenging field conditions outperforming the baseline.

Abstract:The current state of automation technology has led to a growing interest in the design and development of new use-case agricultural robots that can provide effective solutions to the challenges that agriculture is facing in industrialized countries, especially those derived from labor shortage and ever-increasing production costs. The advent of autonomous moderate-size machines in the field appears as a prospective way of promoting the sustainable production of food in Europe, Japan, and North America. However, there exist important obstacles to the broad expansion of autonomous robots in the field; reliability, safeguarding, system complexity, and cost-efficiency in particular rank high among the impediments to overcome before prototypes move into the production stage. Robot navigation is essential for the successful deployment of autonomous machines in conventional farms, as a minimum level of safety has to be granted at the same time that navigation engines cannot be too sophisticated for solutions to compete with current equipment. In such compromise, global navigation satellite systems play a key role due to its wide range of solutions, and an important number of limitations. In this research, a variety of experiments were conducted to determine the scope of GNSS solutions as a principal component of the navigation system of novel farm robots. Results showed that regardless of the quality of the receiver used, multipath and other uncontrollable errors eventually occur in the field, and therefore signal consistency must be continuously checked by the robot’s navigation engine. Different strategies based on the meticulous analysis of NMEA strings, the optimal combination of GGA and VTG messages, and the trajectory-based redundant estimation of robot planar states are proposed to enhance the integration of GNSS measurements in the navigation engine of agricultural robots.

Navigation of an Autonomous Spraying Robot for Orchard Operations Using LiDAR for Tree Trunk Detection

Abstract:Traditional Japanese orchards control the growth height of fruit trees for the convenience of farmers, which is unfavorable to the operation of medium- and large-sized machinery. A compact, safe, and stable spraying system could offer a solution for orchard automation. Due to the complex orchard environment, the dense tree canopy not only obstructs the GNSS signal but also has effects due to low light, which may impact the recognition of objects by ordinary RGB cameras. To overcome these disadvantages, this study selected LiDAR as a single sensor to achieve a prototype robot navigation system. In this study, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and K-means and random sample consensus (RANSAC) machine learning algorithms were used to plan the robot navigation path in a facilitated artificial-tree-based orchard system. Pure pursuit tracking and an incremental proportional–integral–derivative (PID) strategy were used to calculate the vehicle steering angle. In field tests on a concrete road, grass field, and a facilitated artificial-tree-based orchard, as indicated by the test data results for several formations of left turns and right turns separately, the position root mean square error (RMSE) of this vehicle was as follows: on the concrete road, the right turn was 12.0 cm and the left turn was 11.6 cm, on grass, the right turn was 12.6 cm and the left turn was 15.5 cm, and in the facilitated artificial-tree-based orchard, the right turn was 13.8 cm and the left turn was 11.4 cm. The vehicle was able to calculate the path in real time based on the position of the objects, operate safely, and complete the task of pesticide spraying.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a novel visual-based autonomous trajectory-tracking control method for steering a wheeled robot following the lines of crop row in paddy field. A rice crop rows detection method, based on the region growth sequential clustering − random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm, is developed to generate trajectory. Concurrently, a dynamics predictive controller is employed to compute the command for the desired steering angle. The controller leverages a model that incorporates slip dynamics and operates on a low power consumption industrial computer. Experimental results show that the developed algorithm can successfully obtain the correct trajectory in more than 96.25 % of the cases, with the angle error consistently below 3°. Furthermore, the single-image processing time is notably swift at 13.98 ms, underscoring the commendable adaptability and real-time performance of the proposed methodology. During movement in the paddy field, the robot exhibits maximum lateral deviations of 4.55 cm, 5.65 cm, and 6.41 cm at speeds of 0.3 m/s, 0.6 m/s, and 0.9 m/s, respectively, accompanied by corresponding heading angle errors of 4.59°, 5.63°, and 7.39°. Notably, while adeptly tracking rice crop rows at all three speeds, the robot consistently maintains a maximum lateral error below one-fourth of the inter-row spacing of rice planting. This study assumes significance in enhancing the stability of ground-traversing agricultural robots, serving as a valuable reference for advancing the research and development of intelligent and efficient agricultural robotic systems.
