Abstract:Big data has been reported widely to facilitate epidemic prevention and control in health care during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, there is still a lack of practical experience in applying it to hospital prevention and control. This study is devoted to the practical experience of design and implementation as well as the preliminary results of an innovative big data-driven COVID-19 risk personnel screening management system in a hospital. Our screening system integrates data sources in four dimensions, which includes Health Quick Response (QR) code, abroad travelling history, transportation close contact personnel and key surveillance personnel. Its screening targets cover all patients, care partner and staff who come to the hospital. As of November 2021, nearly 690 000 people and 5.79 million person-time had used automated COVID-19 risk screening and monitoring. A total of 10 376 person-time (0.18%) with abnormal QR code were identified, 242 person-time with abroad travelling history were identified, 925 person-time were marked based on the data of key surveillance personnel, no transportation history personnel been reported and no COVID-19 nosocomial infection occurred in the hospital. Through the application of this system, the hospital's expenditure on manpower and material resources for epidemic prevention and control has also been significantly reduced. Collectively, this study has proved to be an effective and efficient model for the use of digital health technology in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the data from multiple sources, this system has an irreplaceable role in identifying close contacts or suspicious person, and can significantly reduce the social burden caused by COVID-19, especially the human resources and economic costs of hospital prevention and control. It may provide guidance for clinical epidemic prevention and control in hospitals, as well as for future public health emergencies.
An Effectiveness Evaluation of a Community-Based Course for Medical Students: a Randomized Controlled Trial in the Teaching of Epidemiology.

Abstract:Background Epidemiology is considered to be the fundamental science of public health and plays an important role in clinical competence and professional development. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term course for the teaching of epidemiology, which was designed as a community-based class for medical students. Method This course was designed according to Kern’s six-step approach to curriculum development. A total of 75 undergraduates were recruited. Forty-one students were assigned to an experimental group engaged in theoretical teaching and practical courses, while 34 students were assigned to the control group only taking theoretical courses. All participants were asked to complete a pre- and post-course survey and to take a test after completing the course. The scores between the experimental and control groups were compared using the Wilcoxon test. Result The experimental group showed significantly higher self-assessment scores in course understanding ( p = 0.0126) and clinical practice skills ( p = 0.0005) after completing the course, while no significant difference was observed in the control group. In addition, students in the experimental group reported significantly higher interest ( p = 0.0015), stronger learning motivation ( p = 0.0113) and a better mastery of epidemiology ( p = 0.0167) after completing the course than those in the control group. However, test scores ( p = 0.0859) and pass rates ( p = 0.1755) demonstrated no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusion The short-term practical course in epidemiology exerted significantly positive effects on the improvement of student learning enthusiasm, course understanding and clinical practice skills. These findings provide new ideas and statistical evidence for the development of epidemiological instruction. Future studies should explore how to more widely and optimally apply community-based courses to the teaching of epidemiology.
[Application of virtual simulation technology in epidemiology education: a systematic review]

Abstract:Objective: To systematically review the progress, advantages, disadvantages, precautions and future trends of virtual simulation technology used in epidemiology teaching. Methods: A systematical literature retrieval was conducted by using PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data and VIP Paper Check System with key words of epidemiology, teaching and virtual simulation, and the literatures included were screened and classified with narrative integration method. Chinese virtual simulation teaching platforms were used to select the literatures about existing epidemiology virtual simulation teaching projects for integration and analysis. Results: A total of 22 articles were included (7 in Chinese and 15 in English), most of which were teaching projects for students majoring in Public Health. We also found 24 national first-class courses and 21 provincial first-class courses in virtual simulation of epidemiology in China. The application of virtual simulation technology in epidemiology education is still in its infancy, and the interaction degree is mostly moderate. It is mainly used in three scenarios: improving the visualization degree of complex concepts and structures, training the operational skills through low-risk and low-cost virtual environment, serving as an effective supplement to the teaching of epidemiological field investigation and response to public health emergencies. In terms of effect, it is conducive to students' understanding of epidemiology related phenomena and principles, and has the advantages of breaking through time and space constraints, reducing teaching costs and risks, improving students' attention and satisfaction and so on. However, it also faces the lack of foundation in the initial stage, and some students have problems such as psychological and physiological discomfort. In the future, we need to optimize the development process, program design and so on. At the same time, we should conduct more in-depth research on cost calculation, effect evaluation and curriculum integration. Conclusions: The application of virtual simulation technology in epidemiology education is an important part of training high-level applied public health talents. We encourage to actively carry out virtual simulation teaching in epidemiology, and train public health talents with Chinese characteristics.
[Historical perspective of progress and achievement on three-dimensional construction of epidemiological textbooks in the past 70 years in China]

Abstract:Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the epidemiological textbooks in China have gone through an all-round development consistently, from nothing to something, from paper to multimedia. After the reform and opening up, especially after the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in order to meet the needs of training multi-level public health talents, a group of epidemiologists, represented by professor Qian Yuping, Wu Xike, Li Liming, Zhan Siyan, et al, have always devoting themselves to the construction of epidemiological textbooks, so that the theory, teaching and scientific research of epidemiology had their own series of specialized textbooks. For nearly 20 years, epidemiological textbooks are obviously updated and improved under the convergence of new technology and media. Digital resources, such as CD, Mooc and electronic schoolbag, together with traditional paper textbooks, perfectly contribute to the modern comprehensive three-dimensional epidemiological textbooks and lay a solid foundation for talent cultivation, discipline construction, scientific research and disease prevention and control.

Abstract:Objective:This study aims to systematically sort out the effectiveness evaluation of the general education teaching models in epidemiology at home and abroad and provide a reference for the development and reform of epidemiology education.Methods:A systematic search of English databases such as PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science and Chinese databases such as CNKI, Sinomed, Wanfang, etc., were used to screen out the literature on different general teaching models of education in epidemiology. Each literature's teaching effect will be summarized and evaluated to conduct a systematic qualitative review in the narrative integration method, Results:A total of 45 articles (28 in Chinese and 17 in English) were included in this study, involving 14 teaching models, including mixed teaching models, PBL (problem-based learning), project designing models, and CBL (case-based learning) and other teaching models. Except for some teaching models such as project design, network platform, and flipped classroom model, the teaching effect of other innovative models is better than that of the traditional model. The distribution of teaching models was different in Chinese and foreign literature. Foreign teaching models were diverse, mainly concentrated in mixed teaching models and software/network platform learning. Domestic teaching models were relatively fixed. The mixed teaching model and PBL model were the most widely used in China, and there were fewer comparative studies between different teaching models than in foreign countries.Conclusion:General education in epidemiology is still in the early exploration stage. Compared with the traditional lecture model, the effect of various innovative teaching models has been improved. According to teaching objectives and student characteristics, we encourage extensive use of different teaching strategies, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications and integrating epidemiological knowledge with inter-professional knowledge. Thus, students who can apply what they learn are becoming interdisciplinary talents our society needs.

Abstract:Background: A crucial goal of infectious disease surveillance is the early detection of epidemics, which is essential for disease control. In China, the current surveillance system is based on confirmed case reports. In rural China, it is not practical for health units to perform laboratory tests to confirm disease and people are more likely to get 'old' and emerging infectious diseases due to poor living conditions and closer contacts with wild animals and poultry. Syndromic surveillance, which collects non-specific syndromes before diagnosis, has great advantages in promoting the early detection of epidemics and reducing the necessities of disease confirmation. It will be especially effective for surveillance in resource poor settings.Methods/Design: This is a field experimental study. The experimental tool is an innovative electronic surveillance system, combining syndromic surveillance with the existing case report surveillance in four selected counties in China. In the added syndromic surveillance, three types of data are collected including patients' major symptoms from health clinics, pharmaceutical sales from pharmacies and absenteeism information from primary school. In order to evaluate the early warning capability of the new added syndromic surveillance, the timelines and validity of the alert signals will be analyzed in comparison with the traditional case reporting system. The acceptability, feasibility and economic evaluation of the whole integrated surveillance system will be conducted in a before and after study design.Discussions: Although syndromic surveillance system has mostly been established in developed areas, there are opportunities and advantages of developing it in rural China. The project will contribute to knowledge, experience and evidence on the establishment of an integrated surveillance system, which aims to provide early warning of disease epidemics in developing countries.
Increased frequency of multiple primary melanomas in hereditary familial melanoma.

Abstract:Multiple primary melanomas can be observed in a frequency of 1-4% in melanoma patients, while they obviously occur more frequently in hereditary familial melanoma. In every 8th patient with an--in itself rare--hereditary familial melanoma a development of two or more primary melanomas has to be expected. Casuistically, a family is reported where a 14-year-old girl died of malignant melanoma, whose mother later on developed two primary malignant melanomas in an interval of 2 years.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine Chinese medical educators' ICT and digital literacy awareness in an international joint health programme. An online survey was used to investigate the Chinese medical educators' current situation and their challenges on the development of digital literacy in practice. The results show that medical educators' occupations and the lengths of usage of computers have a significant influence on the web search skills. A majority of participants are aware of digital technologies and interested in using them but fewer are confident to use them to design teaching and learning resources online (16.9%) to meet students' needs. A lack of institutional funding, insufficient ICT training programme and resources are found as major factors for enhancing Chinese medical educators' digital literacy skills. Barriers and opportunities are also discussed for arousing instructional attention in facilitating medical educators to improve their digital literacy skills.

Abstract:Epidemiology is a discipline integrating methodology and applied science, whose mission is to prevent and control diseases and promote health. This review introduces the new progress of epidemiology from five aspects: communicable diseases, chronic diseases, systems epidemiology, implementation research and big data of health care. New projects and constantly emerging technologies in the field of infectious diseases are inspiring, while more attention should be paid to the environmental factors of pathogen variation. In the field of chronic diseases, there is an urgent need to study the multimorbidity of the elderly. The role of infectious inducers and human microbiota in the occurrence and development of chronic diseases has been gradually revealed. Systems epidemiology, which is of great significance to achieve precision prevention is a new branch and an important supplement of modern epidemiology. Implementation research, is a bridge connecting basic scientific research and public health practice and will provide evidence to support the effective implementation of the Health China Action Plan. The development of health care big data is based on digital public health, which provides a broad research platform and abundant data resources for epidemiology, and will promote the fundamental transformation of the service and management mode of public health.

Abstract:Background: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has tested the ability of universities to provide a high-quality, safe educational experience for students due to campuses shutting down. As a result, online learning could shift from a traditional classroom teaching mode and make education accessible to students. Previous studies have used individual online teaching cases to exploit a variety of online learning tools to ensure the continuation of medical education during this difficult time in China. However, for the first time, we have conducted a systematic review of local online teaching approaches, existing challenges, and potential solutions. Purpose: We present the issues and experience of conducting online medical teaching practices in China with the aim of communicating them to our peers in other countries or regions when examining the transition to e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Methods: We searched the keywords below from public databases and reviewed relevant publications reporting on medical online teaching in China during the COVID-19 pandemic to analyze and summarize the online tools, modalities, and challenges. Results: We listed common online teaching tools and described a variety of online teaching modalities, as well as possible challenges. We also discussed potential solutions for those challenges, as well as the impact of the transition to online teaching on traditional education. Conclusion: By investigating local online medical teaching in China, we present useful tools and modalities that have been successfully exploited in education during the difficult time of COVID-19, although some challenges remain. The exploration of the transition to online teaching or learning will likely continue to have a profound impact on traditional classroom teaching.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: In response to the sudden COVID-19 epidemic outbreak, China’s Ministry of Education proposed “continuing teaching and learning regardless of suspending classes” to provide “available courses and teachers” for students. Web-based teaching has become the main teaching method of medical colleges and universities during the COVID-19 epidemic period. Before the outbreak, the concept and technology of web-based teaching had been partially implemented. The epidemic situation has promoted the implementation of large-scale web-based teaching and the multidimensional development of education in China. Furthermore, there are higher requirements for information teaching. Teachers and students cannot adapt to the web-based teaching mode. The lack of interaction is a problem in the web-based teaching. To adapt to the rapid development of information technology, medical colleges and universities must consider the COVID-19 epidemic as an opportunity to quickly update educational concepts, train teachers’ Internet thinking, innovate the web-based teaching mode, and make full use of the network platform to provide better teaching and services. Moreover, medical colleges and universities should eliminate the weaknesses of web-based teaching and improve the quality and connotation of teaching.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of technology, the development of the Internet has entered a new era evolutionizing traditional media to new media. Multimedia has become an inevitable trend, directly changing traditional teaching to digital teaching. In recent years, with the popularization of electronic classroom teaching materials, traditional teaching has experienced a digital transformation, which impacts teachers and students. Abstract:Rapidly upgraded digital technology has impacted all walks of life, and public health field is also undergoing a digital transformation. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the wide use of digital technology in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, greatly enhancing the capacity of public health system in emergency response and routine disease prevention and control. This article summarizes the definition of digital public health, applications of digital technology in the prevention and control of infectious diseases and chronic non-communicable diseases, as well as in public health surveillance, discusses the challenges in the development of digital public health and introduces the eight principles for digital transformation of public health proposed by the Pan American Health Organization.

Abstract:Improving citizen epidemic prevention information literacy is one of the most cost-efficient and important measures to improve people's epidemic prevention abilities to effectively deal with future public health crises. Epidemic prevention information literacy is beneficial to improve individuals' ability to deal with public health crises in the future. By summarizing related domestic and international research, and utilizing an empirical methodology, we constructed an epidemic prevention information literacy assessment model with good reliability, validity, and model fit. The model is composed of four indicators: (1) "epidemic prevention information awareness"; (2) "epidemic prevention information knowledge"; (3) "epidemic prevention information ability"; (4) "epidemic prevention information morality". We used the model to assess the epidemic prevention information literacy of Chinese citizens. The results showed the following: (1) the overall level of the epidemic prevention information literacy of Chinese citizens was comparatively high, however, its development was unbalanced, and the capability and moral levels of the epidemic prevention information were comparatively low; (2) the four dimensions of the epidemic prevention information literacy were different in terms of the citizens' education levels and locations. We analyzed the probable causes of these problems, and we propose specific corresponding countermeasures. The research provides a set of methods and norms for the evaluation of citizen epidemic prevention information literacy in the post-epidemic era.
