Abstract:A technique for encapsulating fluorescent organic probes in a micelle system offers an important alternative method to manufacture watersoluble organic nanoparticles (ONPs) for use in sensing Hg2+. This article reports on a study of a surfactant-free micelle-like ONPs based on a 3,6-di(2-thieny1)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP) amphiphile, (2(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)-3,6-di(2-thiophyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (NDPP) fabricated to monitor Hg2+ in water. NDPP was synthesized through a simple one-step modification of a commercially available dye TDPP with a flexible and hydrophilic alkoxy. This study reports, for the first time, that TDPP dyes can respond reversibly, sensitively, and selectively to Hg2+ through TDPP-Hg-TDPP complexation, similar to the well-known thymine(T) Hg thymine(T) model and the accompanying molecular aggregation. Interestingly, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed that, in water, NDPP forms loose micelle-like fluorescent ONPs with a hydrohobic TDPP portion encapsulated inside. These micelle-like nanoparticles offer an ideal location for TDPP Hg complexation with a modest molecular aggregation, thereby providing both clear visual and spectroscopic signals for Hg2+ sensing. An estimated detection limit of 11 nM for Hg2+ sensing with this NDPP nanoparticle was obtained. In addition, NDPP ONPs show good water solubility and high selectivity to Hg2+ in neutral or alkalescent water. It was superior to most micelle based nanosensors, which require a complicated process in the selection or synthesis of suitable surfactants. The determinations in real samples (river water) were made and satisfactory results were achieved. This study provides a low-cost strategy for fabricating small molecule-based fluorescent nanomaterials for use in sensing Hg2+. Moreover, the NDPP nanoparticles show potential ability in Hg2+ ion adsorption and recognization of cysteine using NDPP-Hg composite particle.
A Pyrene Based “Turn-On” Fluorescent Sensor for Highly Sensitive Detection of Cu2+ and 3-Nitropropionic Acid

Abstract:Copper (II) (Cu2+) and 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) are harmful substances usually found in foods. Therefore, establishing rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection method for both of these substances is significant research work. A pyrene-based fluorescent sensor (PP) was synthesized to enable highly selective and sensitive simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and 3-NPA in food samples. Initially, PP showed weak fluorescence because of the photo–induced electron transfer process (PET). Upon the presence of Cu2+, the emission of PP at 454nm enhanced owing to the coordination between PP and Cu2+ which hindered the PET. Additionally, under 365nm UV irradiation, the color of the PP solution transitions from orange to bright blue, allowing for naked-eye detection. The sensor PP demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu2+ compared to other competitive metal ions, with the detection limit was 0.036μM, within a linear range of 0–20μM. The binding stoichiometry between PP and Cu2+ is determined to be 2:1 using the Job’s plot method, with a binding constant (Ka) of 7.2 ×103M−1/2. Furthermore, at lower pH (in the range 2.55–5.98), the emission of PP was also enhanced due to the protonation of PP which suppresses the PET process. Given its sensitive and linear response to acidic pH, PP exhibits excellent sensing performance for detecting 3-NPA, with a low detection limit of 0.32μM, surpassing previously reported methods in terms of detection sensitivity.
Adaptable Biomolecule-Interactive Dual Colorimetric Chemosensor for Cu 2+ and Pd 2+ : Insight from Crystal Structure, Photophysical Investigations, Real-Time Sampling, and Molecular Logic Circuits

Abstract:Considering the crisis of single probes for the simultaneous colorimetric detection of both Cu2+ and Pd2+ metal ions, which are toxic to living organisms even in trace amounts, in this communication, we report the facile synthesis and characterization, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), of a single molecular probe (E)-3-((2-(methylthio)phenyl)diazenyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4-ol (TABH). TABH is bioactive and avidly interacts with biomolecules such as BSA protein and CT DNA, as evidenced by spectrofluorometric and photometric tests. The probe is also proficient in the selective and swift colorimetric sensing of Cu2+ and Pd2+ ions in ACN/H2O (4/1 v/v, pH = 7.2) medium over other metal ions. The sensor’s ability to selectively bind the analytes is demonstrated by a noticeable color shift from yellow to reddish brown for Cu2+ and violet for Pd2+, which is clearly visible to the human eye. A detailed investigation of the recognition mechanism using Job’s plot, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR) analysis, electrospray ionization (ESI) mass analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry for both ions. Furthermore, the chemosensor exhibits a strong association affinity (7.61 × 104 and 1.42 × 105 M–1 for Cu2+ and Pd2+, respectively) and a low detection limit (54.8 and 5.32 nM for Cu2+ and Pd2+, respectively). Binding data and absorption studies revealed that Pd2+ had a higher affinity for the probe than Cu2+. This makes it simple for Pd2+ to replace Cu2+ in the [TAB-Cu 2+ ] complex, increasing Pd2+’s differential selectivity over Cu2+. Cu2+ sensing is reversible with the addition of both ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and triphenylphosphine (PPh3), whereas Pd2+ sensing is exclusively reversible with the presence of PPh3 only. The sensing activities were also investigated with molecular logic operations of AND, OR, and NOT gates. In addition, the chemoprobe proved to be effective in identifying Cu2+ and Pd2+ in actual water samples. It was then converted into test strips, creating a portable device for on-site analysis and testing.

Abstract:A novel colorimetric and fluorescent probe (NAP-PMA) has been constructed through appending 2-pyridinemethanamine to naphthalimide. The air and moisture stable fluorophore were adopted as a colorimetric and fluorescent probe for palladium cation in organic solvent, revealing simultaneously good selectivity, high sensitivity and low detection limit (22.5 nM). Moreover, NAP-PMA not only exhibited a visible naked-eye color change from yellowish green to pink, but also displayed specific selectivity for the recognition of palladium acetate. The fluorescence sensing and 1H NMR titration experiments demonstrated that the proposed mechanism of the sensing process is the formation of a novel palladium complex system by the introduction of Pd2+. In addition, NAP-PMA could be used as paper strips to quantitatively detect Pd2+ in water. Furthermore, the developed sensing platform NAP-PMA-Pd is capable of detecting CO in living cells by “turn on” mode with high selectivity and stability, providing a potential real-time monitor for CO-involved reactions in biological systems.

Abstract:Rapid modern industrialization and urbanization have escalated heavy metal pollution, with palladium (Pd 2+ ) raising significant concerns due to its extensive usage in catalysis, hydrogen storage, and electronics, thereby imposing substantial risks on the environment and human health. In this study, we report a highly fluorescent indium nanocubes based chemosensor ( InNCs ) functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) and 4-(pyridyl)ethenyl benzene (PEB). The InNCs exhibited emission maximum at 415 nm (λ ex ∼ 350 nm) with robust chemical and photo-stability, and acted as a fluorogenic probe for selective recognition of Pd 2+ in aqueous medium. The fluorescence sensing properties of InNCs were thoroughly assessed via different techniques including steady-state absorption, emission and time-resolved emission spectroscopic methods. Among the various competitive analytes, only Pd 2+ could induce a significant fluorescence quenching in the probe. This "turn-off" fluorescence sensing demonstrated a remarkably low LoD of ∼65 nM. Notably, with the addition of EDTA, the probe displayed good recyclability upto 4 cycles. The sensory probe was successfully employed as a reusable platform to estimate Pd(II) in different real water and soil samples with considerable accuracy (∼ 5–10 % error). Moreover, the probe exhibited a pH-induced fluorescence transition, indicating its potential to be applied as a pH sensor. The Pd(II) binding and pH-sensing mechanisms have also been elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescent sensors could effectively eliminate the interference of spontaneous fluorescence or instrument fluctuation to improve the analysis sensitivity and accuracy. In this work, a dual-emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots/AuNCs (NCDs-AuNCs) nanohybrid was fabricated under mild conditions by the hydrothermal method, without additional coupling agents, which is facile and environmentally friendly. The prepared nanohybrid was employed for the sensitive detection of Pb 2+ . The sensor exhibited dual emission peaks at 460 and 625 nm with efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer under a single excitation wavelength of 360 nm, in which the red fluorescence of AuNCs was enhanced and the blue fluorescence of NCDs was slightly quenched with the presence of Pb 2+ . The quantitative analysis of Pb 2+ was performed upon the change of both fluorescence intensities. The sensor was successfully used for Pb 2+ detection in real water samples with satisfactory spiking recoveries in a range of 91.0%–101.3% and low relatively standard deviations (RSDs < 3%), which exhibited good selectivity and anti-interference ability. In addition, a paper-based sensor was fabricated by immobilizing the nanohybrids on filter paper, which enables the visual semi-quantitative determination of Pb 2+ by the naked eye through the color transition from blue to pink. The prepared NCDs-AuNCs nanohybrids showed great application potential in environmental water monitoring in an efficient and green way.

Abstract:Designing high performance signal turn on or ratiometric fluorescent probes for detecting hazardous substances is of great importance and challenging. In this paper, two coumarin-based fluorescent probes C1 and C2 with allyl carbonate and propargyl as their respective fluorescence masking groups were designed and synthesized for detecting both palladium and hydrazine. Probe C1 showed highly selective and sensitive fluorescence turn on response towards Pd-0 over all other tested metal ions including Pd2+. Whereas a large ratiometric fluorescence response towards Pd-0 was observed for probe C2. The detection limits for Pd-0 were determined to be 33 nM and 14 nM for C1 and C2, respectively. Taking advantages of the high Pd-0 selectivity of C1 and the metal ion reducing ability of hydrazine, we further successfully developed a new strategy for hydrazine detection, which is based on the reduction of Pd2+ to Pd-0 by hydrazine and subsequent Pd-0-induced removal of the allyl carbonate fluorescence masking group in C1. The C1-Pd2+ sensing system was determined to be selective for hydrazine detection over other tested amines with a detection limit calculated to be 37 nM (similar to 1.2 ppb). (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. An ICT-guided ratiometric naphthalene-benzothiazole-based probe for the detection of cyanide with real-time applications in human breast cancer cells

Abstract:A methoxynaphthalene benzothiazole conjugate (MNBTZ) armed with CC vinylic double bonds was synthesized and utilized for the selective detection of CN- ions. The probe showed yellow fluorescence due to ICT from the methoxynaphthalene moiety to benzothiazole, which instantly changed to light purple upon the nucleophilic addition of CN- to the vinylic double bond, inhibiting ICT due to the break-in conjugation. The effectiveness of the probe was proved by this brilliant ratiometric fluorescence change, which was achieved selectively as observed by experiments with competing anions. 1H NMR titrations and DFT calculations support this mechanism. A low detection limit of 2.1(±0.0022) × 10-8 M along with good fluorescence color change on solid TLC plates and human breast cancer cells makes it amenable to CN- sensing.

Abstract:The colorimetric detection of metal ions is significantly applied for industrial, ecological, and medical applications. Here, we synthesize 4-((Z)-1-(((Z)-(2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)-hydrazineylidene)ethyl)benzene-1,3-diol a new chemosensor that acts for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ and Pd2+ ions to the ligand. The recognition is determined by redshift in UV-visible, emission intensity changes in fluorescence, colorless to yellow coloration, and cyclic voltammetric signal changes with the addition of Cu2+ and Pd2+ ions to the ligand. The insights into the color changes are described visually and under different wavelengths of light. The designed colorimetric sensing model is developed as paper, cotton, and mask-based assay for Pd2+ and Cu2+ ion. The chemosensor reversibility is checked with the addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and color changes are observed with naked eyes. The infrared (IR) spectral analysis describes ligand's binding behavior towards selective metal ions. In addition, the chemosensor works for low detection limit (4.906 x 10(-7) M for Cu2+, 9.802 x 10(-7) M for Pd2+), limit of quantitation (1.636 x 10(-6) M for Cu2+, 3.267 x 10(-6) M for Pd2+) with good association affinity (1.273 x 10(5) M-1 for HMHEB-Cu2+ binding, 6.983 x 10(10) M-2 for HMHEB-Pd2+ binding).
Synthesis and applications of a corrole-based dual-responsive fluorescent probe for separate detection of hydrazine and hydrogen sulfide

Abstract:Here, a corrole-based dual-responsive fluorescent probe DPC-DNBS was rationally designed and synthesized for the separate detection of hydrazine (N2H4) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) with high selectivity and sensitivity. The probe DPC-DNBS is intrinsically none fluorescent due to PET effect, however, addition of increasing amount of N2H4 or H2S to DPC-DNBS turned on an excellent NIR fluorescence centered at 652 nm and thereby provided a colorimetric signaling behavior. The sensing mechanism was verified by HRMS, 1H NMR and the DFT calculations. Common metal ions and anions do not interfere with the interactions of DPC-DNBS with N2H4 or H2S. Furthermore, the presence of N2H4 does not affect the detection of H2S; however, the presence of H2S interferes with the detection of N2H4. Hence, quantitative detection of N2H4 must occur in an H2S-free environment. The probe DPC-DNBS displayed some fascinating merits in separate detection of these two analytes, including large Stokes shift (233 nm), fast response (15 min for N2H4, 30 s for H2S), low detection limit (90 nM for N2H4, 38 nM for H2S), wide pH range (6-12) and outstanding biological compatibility. Significantly, DPC-DNBS was utilized to detect hydrazine in real water, soil and food samples. And its favorable performances for separate detection N2H4 and H2S were successfully demonstrated in HeLa cells and zebrafish, indicating its value of practical application in biology.

Abstract:Cyanide is one of the highly poisonous pollutants to our environment and toxic to human health. It is important to develop the widely applicable methods for their recognition to secure safe uses for people coming into contact and handling cyanide and their derivatives. In this regard, the aggregation-induced emission materials possess high potential for the development of simple, fast, and convenient methods for cyanide detection through either "turn-off" or "turn-on". Among the AIE-based materials, tetraphenylethylene is a promising sensor for various sensing applications. In this paper, we have designed and synthesized a TPE-based chemosensor, which shows high sensitivity and displays good selectivity for cyanide (CN–) over others in the presence of interfering Cl–, I–, F–, Br–, HSO4–, H2PO4–, NO3–, HCO3–, and ClO4– anions employed. The naked-eye, UV–vis, and fluorescence methods are employed to evaluate the performance of probe 1 toward CN– detection. From these experiments, CN– ions can be detected with a limit of detection as low as 67 nM, which is comparatively lower than that of the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit of the cyanide anion, that is, 1.9 μM. From the Job's plot, the 1:1 stoichiometric complexation reaction between probe 1 and CN– was found. The probe was efficiently applied for the detection of CN– ions using a paper strip method. The probe 1 also showed the potential of detecting CN– ions in various food items and in the cell line.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Sensitive detection of cancer cells is essential to early clinic diagnosis, and the photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors with high sensitivity and good selectivity may provide a new approach for cytosensing. Herein, we demonstrate the development of a new cathodic PEC cytosensor based on the integration of covalent organic polymer (COP) with palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs). The COP films are in-situ grown at room temperature on the transparent indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates, and they subsequently assemble with PdNPs to immobilize aptamers via palladium-sulfur chemistry. PdNPs can catalyze the oxidation of dopamine to produce aminochrome and its derivative, which may function as the electron acceptors of COP for the generation of an enhanced photocurrent. In the absence of cancer cells, the electrons on the conduction band of COP on the electrode transfer to the aminochrome and O2, while the electrons on the electrode transfer to the hole of valence band, resulting in a high cathodic photocurrent. In the presence of cancer cells, the trapped cancer cells efficiently cover the electrode to reduce the surface of COP/PdNPs, resulting in the decrease of catalytic precipitation on the electrode and consequently the generation of a low PEC signal. This PEC cytosensor exhibits high sensitivity with a detection limit of 8 cells mL−1 and a large dynamic range from 10 to 106 cells mL−1. Moreover, this PEC cytosensor has distinct advantages of high selectivity, good reproducibility and excellent stability, and it can be extended to directly detect various cancer cells through the integration with corresponding specific aptamers.

Abstract:Palladium has attracted a growing number of attention due to its widely application and environmental toxicity. Consequently, a novel colorimetric and fluorescent turn-on probe (NT-Pd) was designed for sensing of palladium. This probe was capable of detecting palladium in aqueous solution (DMSO was less than 1%, v/v). Under this mild condition, NT-Pd displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for sensing of palladium in both colorimetric and fluorescent strategy, such as low detection limit (5.30 nM) and rapid response time (within 10 min). In addition, NT-Pd was successfully applied for imaging of exogenous palladium in living cells and zebrafishes with good biocompatibility and low toxicity, indicating this probe has satisfactory application potential to track palladium in the complicated biological system.

Abstract:A novel dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran-based sensor bearing 2-thiophenecarbonyl as a masking group was established for the detection of cyanide anions. Upon the addition of cyanide, sensor 1 manifested a near-infrared emission band at 717 nm, with an extremely large red-shift (similar to 180 nm) in the absorption spectrum. It also showed an obvious color change from yellow to green. Sensor 1 was used to sensitively measure CN- with low detection limit of 1.44 mu M. The stoichiometric ratio between probe and CN- were determined as 1:1, with the association constant of 7.87 x 10(2) M-1. The reaction mechanism was investigated by ESI-MS, H-1 NMR, HPLC, and density functional theory methods. Results indicate that the nucleophilicity of the cyanide catalyzes the elimination of 2-thiophenecarbonyl, which strengthens the intramolecular charge transfer effect of the dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran fluorophore. Furthermore, sensor 1 was found to be efficient in detecting cyanide in the intracellular region of MCF-7 cells.

Abstract:An effective biosensing platform is described based on halloysite nanotube/carbon composite decorated with Pd nanoparticles (HNT/C@Pd NPs). A novel electrochemical aptasensor was designed using the proposed nano-platform to determine human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), a breast cancer biomarker. Inherently, aptasensing interfaces provide high sensitivity and selectivity for tumor markers owing to the high specific surface area of HNT/C and good conductivity stems from deposition of Pd NPs into HNT/C composite. With a correlation coefficient of 0.996, the electrochemical aptasensor demonstrated a wide linear range from 0.03 ng/mL to 9 ng/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) of the established assay was 8 pg/mL based on S/N = 3 method. Further, the designed biosensor demonstrated acceptable selectivity, good reproducibility, and high stability. The applicability of the impedimetric sensor in human serum samples was also examined and compared to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay (p-value >0.05). Based on the results, it was found that the proposed methodology can be used in quantification of breast cancer markers for early diagnosis and treatment.
Rational design of fluorescent chemosensor for Pd2+ based on the formation of cyclopalladated complex

Abstract:According to the assumption that the formation of C–Pd bond becomes a cyclopalladated complex (CPC), we designed and synthesized two C–N–N pincer ligands of BODIPY appended 2,2′-bipyridine derivatives (BP and BPB). It has been confirmed that the C–Pd bond does exist and plays a crucial role in “on-off” fluorescence behavior. Based on it, a coordination-induced fluorescence quenching sensor for Pd2+ was constructed. The results indicated that BP possessed high sensitivity and specificity for Pd2+ in solution. The limit of detection (LOD) of BP is determined to be 0.97 nM within a linear range between 1.0 and 50.0 nM, meanwhile, the platinum-group ions demonstrate no interference. The bio-imaging application of BP was investigated and it exhibited a promising vitro test for fluorescent imaging of Pd2+ ions in MCF-7 cells. Meanwhile, BPB coated sensor label for Pd2+ was set up. The visible color variation was displayed under UV light with increasing concentrations of Pd2+. Briefly speaking, fluorescence probes of BP and BPB offer new approaches for Pd2+ detection in a lab and on-site test, as well as the vivo imaging. Then, with the aid of (TD)DFT calculation, the internal reason for the optical difference between the two ligands was disclosed. This concept of CPC containing a Pd–C covalent bond provides a promising perspective of coordination fluorescence sensors.

Abstract:The frequent use of palladium in industry may lead to palladium contamination in the final pharmaceutical products, which raises health risks due to their potential toxicity. In this work, a novel near-infrared fluorescent probe NIR-Pd for the detection of palladium (II) has been developed. The probe exhibits excellent sensing properties such as rapid detection of palladium within a few minutes, selectively and sensitively detects palladium in solution. The limit of detection was calculated to be 134.6 nM. Moreover, the probe was successfully used for near-infrared fluorescence imaging of palladium in living cells. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Visually colorimetric sensing of hazardous metallic ions based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been considered a facile, on-site, and reliable monitoring route, yet the improvement of detection limit, as well as environmental pH tolerance, is still needed. Herein, we present an integrated probe design based on functionalizing AuNP cores with carbon quantum dots (CQD) as colorimetric probes for tracing Cu 2+ ions with a limit of detection as low as 18.7 nM. Improved detection selectivity was elucidated with the reduction in thiol groups bound between CQD decorations and AuNP probes initiated by oxidation of Cu 2+ ion analytes, thus separating crossly connected probes, depending on tracing Cu 2+ concentrations. Moreover, distributed CQDs with negative potentials allowed the stabilization of dispersed AuNPs against re-aggregation, which caused the gradual morphological transition from aggregated features to dispersed states in microscopic view, and eventually, reflected the gradual color change from red to purple-red. The correlated practicality of colorimetric detection of the Cu 2+ ion was further validated with sound-sensing selectivity, environmental pH resistance and tests on real samples.
