Abstract:Ineffective communication leads to poor patient outcomes. This cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study examined relationships between self-perceived communication competence (SPCC), communication apprehension (CA) and emotional intelligence (EI) in ADN students (N=135). Second-year students had higher CA scores than first-year students. EI was a significant predictor of SPCC with a positive correlation between EI and SPCC and a negative correlation between CA and SPCC. Early interventions to identify and reduce CA for students may improve communication competence.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Communication is vital in all areas of nursing: prevention, treatment, therapy, rehabilitation, education, and health promotion. This descriptive, longitudinal study aimed to assess nursing students' attitudes toward learning communication skills, perceived importance of nursing communication, and caring efficacy. A self-administered questionnaire was used with a convenience sample to collect data from nursing students and nurse interns. No significant differences over time were found for students' attitudes toward learning communication skills or perceived importance of communication; interns reported higher scores for caring efficacy. Nursing students need to be strong communicators in clinical practice to deal with patients' needs, anxieties, and concerns.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to establish an evaluation index for basic communication skills in basic nursing education. Currently, there are no indicators to evaluate basic communication skills to be acquired in basic nursing education. We attempted to create a communication skills self-efficacy measurement scale based on micro-counseling skills. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted on 238 second-year students from three nursing universities that obtained the consent of the survey cooperation. The questionnaire is a nursing student version counseling self-efficacy / preliminary scale and a characteristic self-efficacy scale created by referring to the explanation of each unit of the micro-counseling skills. Results: The nursing student communication skill self-efficacy measurement scale included 20 items in 4 factors determined by factor analysis and item sorting. The reliability coefficient of each factor was over .80, and the correlation with the characteristic self-efficacy measurement scale was confirmed at the 1% level.

Abstract:Background: Problematic communication in nurse-client relationships is a contributory factor to healthcare disparities and negative health outcomes. Information and practice sessions about intercultural communication in nursing education are vital to equip the future health workforce. Limited evidence was located regarding undergraduate nursing students' perspectives on intercultural communication, which is crucial in determining the effectiveness and appropriateness of incorporating intercultural communication in nursing curricula. Objective: This study explored the perceptions of undergraduate nursing students regarding intercultural communication in their nursing program. Design: This study used a qualitative descriptive design guided by the Integrated Model of Intercultural Communication Competence. Setting: A Western Canadian university. Participants: Ten fourth-year undergraduate nursing students. Methods: Participants volunteered to participate in a semi-structured, one-on-one interview. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using content analysis. Another data source was the first author's reflective journal. Member checks were conducted. Results: Participants perceived that limited intercultural communication content existed in nursing curricula; however, they acknowledged that learning about and engaging in intercultural communication facilitated more empathetic and culturally safe nursing practice. Barriers identified during intercultural communication in students' clinical practice included language, power differentials, gender, and limited staffing. However, students' cultural background, experiences, social media, and learning within culturally diverse environments were perceived to enable them to facilitate intercultural communication. Based on the findings, recommendations were formulated to integrate a cultural component in health assessment protocols with the addition of active teaching strategies to equip nursing students with the requisite skills and knowledge for effective intercultural communication. Conclusion: This study highlighted the perceived barriers, facilitators, and outcomes of intercultural communication education. Participating nursing students described how they developed empathetic intercultural communication skills and adjusted care with culturally diverse clients. Findings indicate that nurse educators use active teaching strategies that offer students opportunities to engage with culturally diverse clients.
Impact of Standardized Patients on First Semester Nursing Students Self-Confidence, Satisfaction, and Communication in a Simulated Clinical Case

Abstract:Background Utilizing standardized patients (SPs) as a strategy to potentially improve beginning level nursing students’ confidence, satisfaction, and communication after simulated clinical cases is an innovative approach in nursing education. Aim The aim of this study was to examine to what extent an SP affected first semester nursing students’ self-confidence, satisfaction, and communication using a simulated clinical case. Methods First semester undergraduate students in a bachelors of nursing program at a large university in the South-Central region of the United States ( N = 100), were randomly assigned to one of the two groups. Each group was assigned the same case using either an SP or high-fidelity manikin. Students completed postsurveys immediately following completion of the simulation. Student’s self-confidence, satisfaction, and communication were measured using the National League for Nursing Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning for Nursing Education Research and an SP/Faculty Communication Checklist. Results An independent sample t test comparing the two student groups on each of the outcome variables was conducted for each of the research questions. Students who completed the simulation with an SP, reported greater satisfaction, and improved communication. Student reflective comments were significantly more positive in the SP group. There was no statistical difference between the two groups in self-confidence. Conclusion Further research is needed to determine whether the use of SPs versus high-fidelity manikins in simulated cases results in increased self-confidence in beginning level nursing students. Student satisfaction and communication are key components for nursing student success. The impact of SPs and the effect on student outcomes could have long-term benefits for undergraduate nursing programs.

Abstract:Effective communication is a vital component of nursing care, however, nurses often lack the skills to communicate with patients, carers and other health care professionals. Communication skills training programs are frequently used to develop these skills. However, there is a paucity of data on how best to evaluate such courses. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between student self rating of their own ability and their satisfaction with a nurse training course as compared with an objective measure of communication skills. 209 first year nursing students completed a communication skills program. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected and associations between measures were investigated. Paired samples t-tests showed significant improvement in self-rated ability over the course of the program. Students generally were very satisfied with the course which was reflected in both qualitative and quantitative measures. However, neither self-rated ability nor satisfaction was significantly correlated with the objective measure of performance, but self-rated ability and satisfaction were highly correlated with one another. The importance of these findings is discussed and implications for nurse education are proposed.

Abstract:The communication attitude (ACO) of nurses can significantly influence patient health outcomes. This work aims to evaluate predictor variables of communication attitude (emotional intelligence and social skills) in nurses and nursing students separately by comparing linear and non-linear methodologies. Two samples participated in this study: 312 nursing professionals and 1369 nursing students. In total, 75.60% of the professionals and 83.80% of the students were women. After signing the informed consent form, their emotional intelligence (TMMS-24), social skills (IHS) and ACO (ACO) were assessed. It was found that ACO through linear regression models in professionals was predicted by emotional repair and, in students, by attention and emotional repair, as well as by low exposure to new situations, low social skills in the academic or work area and high empathy. Overall, the comparative qualitative models show how the combination of different skills related to emotional intelligence and social skills lead to high levels of ACO. Conversely, their low levels result in an absence of ACO. Our results highlight the importance of emotional intelligence, especially emotional repair and empathy, as well as the need to consider ways to encourage the learning of these skills in a formal way.

Abstract:Objective To explore the status quo of nurse-patient communication ability in undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice and its influencing factors, and provide a basis for clinical nursing education managers to formulate a training plan for communication skills of undergraduate nursing students in the clinical practice stage. Methods From August to September 2019, totally 960 undergraduate nursing students engaging in clinical nursing practice for≤3 months were investigated. The survey content included demographic data, training content of nurse-patient communication ability, and clinical communication ability of nursing students. The status quo and influencing factors of communication ability of undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice were analyzed. Results The nurse-patient communication ability score of 960 undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice was (2.18±0.21) , with the highest score in the dimension of acute listening (2.42±0.51) and the lowest score in the dimension of verification feeling (1.88±0.51) . Univariate analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in the nurse-patient communication ability in the early stage of clinical practice between undergraduate nursing students with different gender, with or without training for nurse-patient communication in the early stage of clinical practice in the hospital and with different training forms (P<0.05) . Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the nurse-patient communication ability score of undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice was positively correlated with the number of nurse-patient communication training sessions in the hospital (r=0.456, P<0.01) . According to multiple linear regression analysis, the number of training sessions and training forms in the hospital were main influencing factors to the nurse-patient communication ability of undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice (P<0.05) . Conclusions The level of nurse-patient communication ability in undergraduate nursing students in the early stage of clinical practice is low and needs to be further improved. Clinical nursing teaching managers should formulate effective training programs based on its influencing factors to strengthen training accordingly. Abstract:Nurses must demonstrate effective communication across complex interpersonal domains, as emphasized by numerous professional healthcare organizations. However, formal communication skills training has been only modestly integrated into baccalaureate nursing programs, and of those studied systematically, there are notable methodological concerns. The current study focused on application of a well-researched communication program [PROGRAM NAME] to student nurses completing summer internships at a comprehensive cancer center as part of their clinical education. The [PROGRAM NAME] training program for student nurses is an in-person, day-long training that includes three sections: responding empathically to patients; discussing death, dying, and end-of-life goals of care; and responding to challenging family interactions. Student nurse participants provided strongly favorable perceptions of the program, with 90% indicating that they agreed or strongly agreed with all perception items. A significant pre- to post-training improvement in self-reported confidence was observed (p < .01). Additionally, pre- and post-training observational coding of standardized patient assessments indicated significant improvements in usage of the following skill categories: total skill use, information organization, and empathic communication (p < .001). Overall, these results suggest that communication skills training for student nurses is a feasible, acceptable, and effective way of increasing confidence and skills usage in complex clinical scenarios.

Abstract:Introduction: This study explores the knowledge of communication skills among nursing students. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of student nurses regarding communication skills and to explore the relationship between gender/age and knowledge of student nurses regarding communication. with patients, and to evaluate the psychometric properties of a self-assessment questionnaire. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 randomly selected nursing students using a self-reported questionnaire It was carried out from January 2023 to March 2023 involving nursing students who were studied at Aman Medical Institute (AMI), college of Nursing, Islamabad. The questionnaire was comprised of 20 statements with the categorization of 5. Collected data were analysed through frequency and percentage. Results: After applying the chi-square test p-value is 0.05. the results showed that there is a significance in age and gender related to communication skills. Pearson's R value is -0.19 and Spearman Correlation value is also -0.19. there is a relationship between gender/age and knowledge of nurses regarding communication. Discussion: The study results show that most of the nursing students have good awareness regarding communication skills that is 98% and 2% students out of 100 have poor awareness regarding communication skills. According to the study, with age and knowledge of student nurses regarding communication skills p-value is 0.04, it concluded that results were significant according to age. It means that there is a relationship between age and knowledge of nursing students.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the level and characteristics of nursing students′ clinical communication competency.Methods Totally,147 interns including undergraduate students and those from vocational school,were recruited in the survey by convenient sampling and they finished the demographic questionnaire,the scale of influencing factors and the clinical communication competency scale.Results Strictly,78.9% of the students rated clinical communication as very important,and 50.3% attached great importance to clinical communication.Undergraduate students scored 83.40±6.81,and those from vocational school scored 79.32±9.70 in clinical communication.Students′ clinical communication ability were affected by their passion for nursing major and the attention they paid to communication.The scores of establishing rapport and verifying patients′ feeling were affected by students′ educational levels,whether being a student leader or not,their passion for their major,the attention they paid to communication,and their satisfaction with practicing environment.Confirming patients′ problem were affected by whether being a student leader or not,co-participation by students′ educational backgrounds and transporting effective information by whether being a students lea-der or not.Statistical significance lay in the above-mentioned relations(P<0.05 for all).Conclusion Nursing teachers should pay attention to students′ needs and feelings,create good atmosphere during students′ internship,provoke students′ inte-rest in their major and improve their clinic communication competency according to students′ educational background.

Abstract:The relationship between nurses and their patients is changing significantly, resulting in a patient-focused model. This work aims to contribute new knowledge about the effect of communication skills on perceived self-efficacy of nursing professionals. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a final sample consisting of 242 nurses. Different instruments that measured communication skills and the general and specific self-efficacy of nursing professionals were utilized. A positive and statistically significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the communication skills and the perceived general and specific self-efficacy was obtained. Nursing professionals who have adequate communication skills feel more confident and more competent, fostering good interpersonal relationships with their patients, and therefore, their perceived general and specific self-efficacy improved as well. Teaching communication skills is important to help nurses cope with a broad range of stressors in their daily interactions with patients, increasing their perceived self-efficacy.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to grasp the correlation between communication ability, empathy, and interpersonal relations among nursing students, and to explore the mediating effect of empathy on the relation between communication and interpersonal relation in nursing students.Methods: Participants were 209 college students in the Department of Nursing at two universities. The data collection period was from October 1, 2019 to November 1, 2019. The questionnaire consisted of measuring tools for general characteristics, communication ability, interpersonal relation and empathy. SPSS/23.0 program was used. The analysis used descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and Sobel's tests.Results: The communication ability was nursing major satisfaction (t=8.25, p <.001), and last year's average grade (t=7.29, p =.001). Interpersonal relationships showed significant differences in gender (t=2.51, p =.013) and nursing major satisfaction (t=10.99, p <.001). Communication ability and empathy (r=.37, p <.001), communication ability and interpersonal relation (r=.77, p <.001), empathy and interpersonal relation (r=.43, p <.001) showed a significant static correlation. In communication ability and interpersonal relation, empathy had a partial mediating effect (Z=2.97, p <.001), and explanatory power was 62%.Conclusion: To improve the communication ability and interpersonal relation of nursing students, it is necessary to develop a personalized and empathy-enhanced education program for each grade.
Mindfulness predicts student nurses' communication self-efficacy: A cross-national comparative study

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare student nurses' communication self-efficacy, empathy, and mindfulness across two countries, and to analyse the relationship between these qualities. Methods: The study had a cross-sectional design. Data was collected from final year student nurses in Norway and Sweden. Communication self-efficacy, empathy, and mindfulness were reported by questionnaires; Clear-cut communication with patients, Jefferson Scale of Empathy, and Langer 14 items mindfulness scale. Results: The study included 156 student nurses, 94 (60%) were Swedish. The mean communication self-efficacy score was 119 (95% CI 116-122), empathy score 115 (95% CI 113-117) and mindfulness score 79 (95% CI 78-81). A Mann-Whitney test showed that Swedish students scored significantly higher on communication self-efficacy, empathy, and mindfulness than Norwegian students did. When adjusted for age, gender, and country in a multiple linear regression, mindfulness was the only independent predictor of communication self-efficacy. Conclusion: The Swedish student nurses in this study scored higher on communication self-efficacy, empathy, and mindfulness than Norwegian students did. Student nurses scoring high on mindfulness rated their communication self-efficacy higher. Practice implications: A mindful learning approach may improve communication self-efficacy and possibly the effect of communication skills training.
Nursing students' work readiness and its influencing factors before participating in a nurse residency program: a multicenter cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Studies have shown that work readiness is closely related to nurses' role adaptation, career development, and patient safety. However, we know little about the nursing students' work readiness and its influencing factors before participating in a nurse residency program, and whether factors have changed from before. Aim: (1) To investigate the work readiness of nursing students ready to engage in a nurse residency program; (2) to identify the factors affecting the nursing students' work readiness and the associations between emotional intelligence and work readiness; and (3) to discuss the changes of factors affecting nursing students' work readiness. Design: An online, multicenter cross-sectional study. Methods: 878 nursing students from eight tertiary hospitals in Chongqing, China were recruited. The online investigation used the General Information Questionnaire, the Nursing Students' Work Readiness Scale, and the Emotional Intelligence scale. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS V23.0. Results: 768 valid questionnaires were included in this study. The nurses obtained a work readiness score of 277.08 ± 44.39 and an emotional intelligence score of 89.57 ± 13.89. Univariate analysis revealed that the following factors affected work readiness: age, sex, family support for becoming a nurse, voluntary choice of nursing major, previous experience as a student cadre, scholarship recipient status, willingness to engage in nursing work during the COVID-19 pandemic and confidence in clinical nursing practice. Frequent incidents of violence, poor salary for nurses for the nurse residency program, and low social acceptance were the top three reasons for decreased confidence in clinical nursing among nursing students. Furthermore, multiple linear regression analysis indicated that age, voluntary choice of nursing major, student leadership experience, confidence in clinical nursing work, self-emotion, and emotional application significantly influenced nurses' work readiness. Conclusion: Clinical instructors and administrators should dynamically assess nurses' work readiness, prioritize individuals aged ≤23, who have chosen the nursing profession involuntarily, lack prior experience as student cadres, and exhibit low confidence in clinical nursing work. This focus will enhance their emotional self-management skills and ability to apply emotions effectively, improving their work readiness and training efficacy.
Effect of integrated English hybrid learning for undergraduate nursing students on students' self-perceived communication competence and communication apprehension: A quasi-experiment study

Abstract:Aim: To demonstrate the self-perceived communication competence and communication apprehension of nursing students before and after taking English for Nursing courses. Background: Despite the growing demand for English as a foreign language courses for nursing students in Indonesia, relatively little research has been conducted to investigate whether these courses meet students' specific learning needs to increase communication competency. Design: Quasi-experiment. Methods: A total of 173 undergraduate nursing students participated and had access to the mixed-methods learning system of integrated English hybrid learning from August through December 2021. The learning methods involved lectures, tutorials, and project-based learning on multiple platforms, such as LiVE Unpad, WhatsApp, and Zoom. Communication competence and apprehension in the English Language were assessed using the Self-Perceived Communication Competence and Communication Apprehension questionnaires via Google Form, and were analyzed using the paired t-test and ANOVA. Results: The findings suggest that English for Nursing courses significantly increased self-perceived communication competence and communication apprehension among nursing students (p < 0.001 for both). A variance test revealed favorability for self-perceived communication apprehension in groups that enjoyed learning English and for communication apprehension in groups that read English texts frequently and rarely. Conclusions: Integrated English hybrid learning for undergraduate nursing students effectively increased their self-perceived communication competence and communication apprehension in undergraduate nursing students. However, this approach cannot be applied to all nursing education levels. A combination of the current and new approaches, as suggested by educators and policymakers, should make it applicable to the desired level of nursing education.

Abstract:As the availability of tests to identify hereditary predisposition to chronic diseases continues to grow, a need has arisen to prepare individuals receiving genetic test results to share this highly sophisticated and value-laden information with other at-risk family members. Responding to this need, a communication skills-building intervention, based on Buckman's model of “Breaking Bad News,” was developed for use in the setting of genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Outcomes will include knowledge, attitudes, and health behavior on the part of both the proband and her first-degree relatives.

However, little is known about the relationships among the dimensions of nurse personality, intercultural communication, and cultural self-efficacy in the provision of this care.PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to examine the associations among personality, intercultural communication, and cultural self-efficacy in nursing students and to compare intercultural communication and cultural self-efficacy between first-year and third-year nursing students.METHOD: One hundred twenty-six Chinese students completed a questionnaire that consisted of three scales that were designed to measure intercultural communication, cultural self-efficacy (cultural concepts, transcultural nursing functions, and cultural knowledge related to South Asians), and personality, respectively.RESULTS: Intercultural communication correlated positively with the three subscales of personality, agreeableness (r = .22, p < .05), openness (r = .20, p < .05), and conscientiousness (r = .18, p < .05). Self-efficacy in cultural concepts correlated positively with agreeableness (r = .18, p < .05) and intercultural communication (r = .49, p < .01). Self-efficacy in transcultural nursing functions correlated positively with intercultural communication (r = .36, p < .01), agreeableness (r = .31, p < .01), emotional stability (r = .25, p < .01), openness (r = .32, p < .01), extraversion (r = .19, p < .05), and conscientiousness (r = .20, p < .05). Self-efficacy in cultural knowledge related to South Asians correlated positively with agreeableness (r = .20, p < .05) and intercultural communication (r = .27, p < .01). No significant difference was found between first-year and third-year students in terms of intercultural communication, self-efficacy in knowledge of cultural concepts, self-efficacy in the skills needed to perform key transcultural nursing functions, or self-efficacy in the cultural knowledge related to South Asians.CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Personality assessments should be included in the nursing student recruitment process. Furthermore, nurse educators should focus greater attention on enhancing the cultural self-efficacy and intercultural communication skills of their students.

Abstract:Background One in four newly graduated registered nurses leave their employment positions within the first year. To reduce this attrition, nursing stakeholders could focus on the final year of nursing education because students at this stage make professional career plans, including their practice destination for the graduate year and their commitment to the profession. Previous studies provide evidence of nursing students' career preferences and specialty choices. However, there is a dearth of data that focuses on the students' career decision-making process. Aim This study examined the self-efficacy or confidence of final-year nursing students in making career decisions and the factors that influence their career decision-making process. Setting and participants Final year pre-registration nursing students ( N = 222) at two public universities in Western Australia. Methods An online survey was used to collect cross-sectional data. The Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale – Short Form was used to investigate nursing students' confidence in making career decisions. Career decision-making self-efficacy refers to the confidence to successfully complete career decision-making tasks. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the participants' characteristics. The chi-square test was used to assess the significance of the difference between categorical data, and binary logistic regression was used to determine the odds of the factors that predict career decision self-efficacy. Results Forty-seven percent of participants who answered all Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale – Short Form questions had good confidence in making career decisions. Factors such as the setting of the final clinical placement, the intention to be employed in the specialisation or organisation of their final placement and the students' assessment of their clinical experience were associated with career decision-making confidence. Conclusions Most participants had low confidence in making career decisions. This study provides ideas for nursing stakeholders to implement measures to improve students' confidence to make informed career decisions.

Abstract:Studies have shown that an underappreciation of the importance of person-centered communication and inappropriate communication training could result in unsatisfactory communication performance from nurses. There are a large number of studies about communication training for nurses, but not so many about communication training in early stages of nursing career. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of a traditional course versus scenario-based simulation training on nurses' communication competency, communication self-efficacy, and communication performance in discharge planning Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). A randomized controlled trial was used with a pretest and two posttests. The experimental group underwent the scenario-based simulation course, whereas the control group received the traditional course. A convenience sample of 116 nurses with qualifications ranging from N0 level (novice nurses) to N2 level (competent nurses) in Taiwan's clinical nursing ladder system was recruited from a medical center in northern Taiwan. Analysis of covariance was used to determine between-subjects effects on communication competency and self-efficacy, whereas independent t test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to examine between-subjects effects on learner satisfaction and discharge planning communication performance. Paired t test was used to determine communication self-efficacy. In this study, the nurses and independent raters found scenario-based simulation training more effective than traditional communication course. However, standardized patients reported no significant difference in communication performance between the two groups of nurses. Despite that traditional classroom lectures and simulation-based communication training could both produce enhanced communication competency and self-efficacy among nurses, this study has established that the latter may be better than the former in terms of learner satisfaction and communication performance improvement. Therefore, introduction of simulation-based training to in-service nursing education could enhance nurses' communication performance in clinical practice.
