Abstract:Objective: Anticipatory grief is frequently experienced by family caregivers of persons with dementia. It is defined as the feelings of pain and loss that appear in the caregiver prior to the death of the person cared for, and it is linked to negative consequences for the physical and psychological caregiver's health. However, more research is needed about this construct. The purpose of this work was to explore the differences regarding gender and kinship in anticipatory grief in caregivers and to explore its associations with distress experienced by the caregivers. Method: The sample consisted of 70 caregivers. The anticipatory grief was measured with the Caregiver Grief Scale (CGS; Meichsner et al., 2016). Also, frequency of problematic behaviours in the person with dementia and caregiver reactions to them (RMPBC; Teri et al., 1992), depressive symptomatology (CES-D; Radloff, 1977), guilt (CGQ; Losada et al., 2010), anxiety (Tension Sub-scale of POMS's Questionnaire; Fernández et al., 2000), emotional ambivalence (CAS; Losada et al., 2017) and the experiential avoidance in caregiving (EACQ; Losada et al., 2014) were measured. Independent-samples T-tests were conducted to study if there were differences in anticipatory grief according to the gender of the caregiver and the kinship with the person with dementia. Secondly, Pearson correlations were conducted to study the associations between anticipatory grief and emotional distress variables. Results: The results showed no significative differences according to the gender of the caregiver in anticipatory grief. However, a longer caregiver ́s age and being a spouse caregiver was related to a greater anticipatory grief. Regarding the person cared for, behavioral problems and caregivers ́ reaction to them were associated with anticipatory grief. With regard to caregiver ́s emotional distress, significant and positive correlations were also obtained between anticipatory grief and its subscales with depressive symptomatology, guilt, anxiety, emotional ambivalence and experiential avoidance in caregiving. Conclusions: The results suggest that anticipatory grief may have a relevant role in the well-being of dementia family caregivers. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this process in the assessment and intervention in this context with caregivers.

Abstract:Background The world prevalence of people with dementia is increasing. Most of the care received by people with dementia is provided by family caregivers, and this prolonged activity has a significant impact on caregivers' levels of depression. Stressors and frequency of leisure are known predictors of caregivers' depressive levels. The longitudinal impact of caregivers' ambivalent and guilt feelings is unknown. Methods Participants were 177 family caregivers of relatives with dementia who were assessed three times during a 2‐year period. In addition to demographic variables, psychological symptoms of the dementias, and frequency of leisure activities, caregivers' ambivalent feelings, guilt, and depressive symptoms were measured. The longitudinal association of changes in these variables with changes in caregivers' depressive symptoms over time was assessed using mixed linear models. Results Changes over time in the assessed variables predicted 48.05% of variance of changes over time in depressive symptoms. Even when variables strongly associated with increased depressive symptoms were controlled (lower caregivers' age and educational level, higher reaction to BPSD, and lower leisure activities), increases in ambivalence and guilt contributed to an increase of 9.22% of the variance of changes depressive symptoms over a 2‐year period. The effects of ambivalent feelings on depression are indirect, mediated by guilt feelings. Cessation of caregiving do not seem to alter these findings. Conclusions Caregivers' ambivalent and guilt feelings are significant predictors of caregivers' mental health. Caregivers may significantly benefit from early detection of ambivalent and guilt feelings and preventive strategies targeting triggers associated with ambivalent and guilt symptoms.

Abstract:An abundance of literature on caregivers of individuals with dementia has been written since the mid-1980s. However, most of this literature focused on the experience of stress, burden, and depression in caregivers, thus excluding the grief experience that also accompanies the caregiving experience. The purpose of this multimethod study is to describe the lived experience of 44 spouses and adult children who are caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and scored high on the Marwit and Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory, Short Form (MM-CGI-SF). This study presents qualitative results from a mixed-methods descriptive study (N = 201). Seven themes emerged from the qualitative data that detailed the caregiving experience of the individuals with high grief: (a) yearning for the past, (b) regret and guilt, (c) isolation, (d) restricted freedom, (e) life stressors, (f) systemic issues, and (g) coping strategies. The first 2 themes reflect grief reactions, whereas isolation, restricted freedom, life stressors, and systemic issues possessed elements of both grief and caregiver burden and stress. Coping strategies used by this group of caregivers included spiritual faith, social supports, and pets. Quantitative analysis confirmed that these themes are unique to individuals with high levels of grief compared with those with moderate/low levels of grief, except for the coping strategies of social support and spiritual faith. Caregivers with high levels of grief may benefit from supportive interventions that are based on reducing feelings of isolation, lack of freedom, and increased guilt and regret, while also addressing feelings of loss. Interventions that facilitate building a supportive network are suggested. Using a screening tool such as the MM-CGI-SF will help in identifying caregivers with high levels of grief who may be in need of additional support.

Abstract:Objectives: Caring for a family member with dementia may have important negative psychological consequences on caregivers. The present study aims to analyze the existence of different profiles in family caregivers of people with dementia according to the levels manifested in different psychosocial variables, which are grouped into psychosocial variables (dysfunctional thoughts, familism, experiential avoidance) and resources (leisure and social support). In addition, it aims to study whether there are differences among those profiles in the levels of distress (depressive, anxious and guilt symptomatology) depending on the relationship of kinship with the cared-for person. Methods: 288 family caregivers of people with dementia divided into four kinship groups (wives, husbands, sons and daughters) participated. Face-to-face interviews were conducted assessing sociodemographic variables, familism (family obligations), dysfunctional thoughts, experiential avoidance, leisure activities, perceived social support and depressive, anxious and guilt symptomatology. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using Ward's method and contingency tables were run between the clusters obtained and the variable of kinship and distress variables. Results: Five clusters were obtained: Low psychosocial vulnerability-High resources (mostly daughters), Low psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources (mostly daughters), Mixed (mostly sons), High psychosocial vulnerability-High resources (mostly husbands) and High psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources (mostly wives). Although with nuances, the clusters associated with lower distress are the Low psychosocial vulnerability-High resources profile and the High psychosocial vulnerability-High resources profile, and with higher distress the Low psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources profile and the Mixed profile. Conclusions: High levels of dysfunctional thoughts, familism and experiential avoidance are not always associated with greater psychological distress. In fact, profile 2 (Low psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources), in which most caregiving daughters are distributed, seems to be particularly vulnerable to presenting higher levels of emotional. Therefore, the identification of profiles of potential protection and vulnerability to psychological distress in family caregivers could help to increase the effectiveness of interventions aimed at this population.

Abstract:Objective: Research in informal dementia caregiving has focused on the negative outcomes it implies as a chronic stress situation, even though positive feelings derived from the caregiving experience are also reported. This co-occurrence of positive and negative experiences is a form of emotional complexity that has barely been explored in caregivers although it could be relevant for understanding caregivers' vulnerability to distress. To explore this emotional complexity, profiles of caregivers according to their levels of positive and negative affect were created and compared with regard to their reported anxiety, ambivalence feelings, experiential avoidance, quality of the actual relationship, thoughts of institutionalizing the person with dementia (PWD), and social support. Methods: 363 primary family caregivers were distributed in groups based on their reported depressive feelings and positive emotions related to caregiving and the PWD. Four groups were identified: (1) flat (low negative affect, low positive affect), (2) negative (high negative affect, low positive affect), (3) positive (low negative affect, high positive affect), (4) mixed (high negative affect, high positive affect). ANOVAS were performed to explore differences between groups. Results: Caregivers in the positive and mixed profiles reported better actual relationships with the PWD and higher experiential avoidance. Caregivers with both negative and mixed profile showed higher anxiety than the other profiles, and the negative profile also reported higher thoughts about institutionalizing the care-recipient and more ambivalence. Caregivers in the positive group reported the highest social support. Conclusion: The obtained findings converge in the idea that caregivers ́ positive emotions towards the PWD are closely related to the quality of the relationship, and may be involved in a delayed decision to institutionalize her/him. The presence of negative affect (depressive feelings) is associated with anxiety symptoms, even when positive emotions are reported, supporting the high prevalence of anxiety-depressive comorbidity in this population. Finally, the negative profile (low positive and high negative affect) is the one that reports more ambivalence. Taken together, these findings suggest that caregiving for PWD should be considered an emotionally complex situation with positive affect derived from the caregiving being key in understanding caregivers' well-being and distress.

Abstract:There is a general consensus that providing care for a relative that has dementia is associated with negative outcomes for caregivers' mental health. There seem to be also associations with negative physical health outcomes, although the literature on this topic is more scarce. Most of the available research consist in studies with a cross-sectional design. Longitudinal studies focused on psychosocial correlates of mental and physical health of the caregivers are lacking, mostly those analyzing the influence of factors such as behavioral and psychological symptoms of the dementia, caregivers` dysfunctional thoughts, and caregivers' ambivalent and guilt feelings. The aim of this presentation will be to describe the findings from the Madrid Caregivers Longitudinal Study, that consist in a two year follow-up of family caregivers of people with dementia. Several models will be described testing the longitudinal effect of psychosocial variables on caregivers' distress (depression and anxiety) and cardiovascular health (measured through biomarkers of inflammation). The practical implications of the findings will be discussed.

Abstract:The present study aims to analyze the existence of different profiles in family caregivers of people with dementia according to psychosocial and resource variables. In addition, it aims to study whether there is a greater representation of each kinship group in each of the profiles and if there are differences in emotional distress among such profiles considering the kinship with the care-recipient. Participants were 288 family dementia caregivers, divided into four kinship groups (wives, husbands, sons and daughters). Psychosocial (familism, dysfunctional thoughts and experiential avoidance), resource (leisure activities and social support) and outcomes (depressive, anxious and guilt symptomatology) variables were collected. A hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward's method, an exploratory factor analysis of two fixed factors and contingency tables were performed. Five clusters were obtained: Low psychosocial vulnerability-High resources, Low psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources, Mixed, High psychosocial vulnerability-High resources, and High psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources. Results suggested that clusters associated with lower distress were the Low psychosocial vulnerability-High resources and the High psychosocial vulnerability-High resources. Clusters associated with higher distress were the Low psychosocial vulnerability-Low resources and Mixed. High levels of dysfunctional thoughts, familism and experiential avoidance do not always have a maladaptive function. This could depend on sociocultural and resource variables such as the kinship with the caregiver or perceived social support. The identification of profiles of family caregivers potentially needing protection and vulnerable to psychological distress could help to increase the effectiveness of interventions aimed at this population.

Abstract:The study identified factors associated with depressive symptoms in family caregivers of persons with dementia with Lewy bodies, Alzheimer’s disease, or Parkinson’s disease dementia. An Internet-based survey generated 606 response sets. Regression analysis indicated that care recipients’ memory and behavioral problems, caregivers’ self-efficacy, grief, and tangible, emotional, and affectionate support were significantly associated with caregivers’ depressive symptoms. Self-efficacy mediated caregiver burden to improve psychological well-being. Social support mediated the association between caregiver grief and psychological well-being. Social workers can provide psychoeducational interventions to help caregivers to manage emotional distress and improve capacity to manage tasks related to the dementia.

Abstract:Background: The intensity of predeath grief is associated with postdeath grief in family caregivers of patients in palliative care. Different factors during caregiving may influence this association. Objective: To examine (1) the intensity of grief in relation to preparedness for caregiving, caregiver burden, and social support, and (2) if these variables moderate associations between predeath and postdeath grief. Methods: This prospective correlational study used unpaired t-test to compare grief in relation to preparedness for caregiving, caregiver burden, and social support. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis investigated moderation effects. Family caregivers were recruited from 10 palliative homecare facilities. The Anticipatory Grief Scale, Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, Preparedness for Caregiving Scale, Caregiver Burden Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used. Ethical approval for the study was granted by the Regional Ethical Review Board in Stockholm, Sweden. Results: In total, 128 family caregivers participated. Those with high caregiver burden scored significantly higher intensity of predeath but not postdeath grief. Caregiver burden and social support moderated the association between intensity of predeath grief and postdeath grief. There was a stronger association between predeath and postdeath grief among caregivers with low caregiver burden or low social support. Preparedness for caregiving had no moderating effect. Discussion: Attention should be directed to caregiver burden and social support during family caregiving, as these variables seem to be significant for the intensity of grief before and after the patient's death. Acknowledging predeath grief during caregiving and recognizing pre- and postdeath grief as parts of the same process are of importance in clinical practice and when designing supportive interventions.

Abstract:<p>Using the Pearlin stress process model, the present study aimed to test if there was an association between caregiving intensity and caregiver burden, to analyze what type of association existed, and to test if different indicators of social support moderated such association among caregivers of people with dementia. Data from the baseline assessment of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health (REACH II) (<em>N</em> = 637) were used. Caregiver burden (12-item Zarit caregiver burden scale), caregiving intensity (caregiving hours), and social support (Lubben social network, received support, satisfaction with support, and negative interactions) were the main measurements. Separate multivariate regression models were conducted with Stata 16. The results showed that the relationship between caregiving hours and caregiver burden was a nonlinear inversed U shape after controlling all of the socio-demographic variables. Further analyses showed that when caregiving hours reached 14 hours per day, the levels of burden were the highest. In addition, received support, satisfaction with support, and social network significantly buffered the relationship between caregiving hours and caregiver burden when they were examined separately. However, only social network played a significant buffering role when examining the four social support indicators simultaneously. These findings suggest the need for programs and practices that emphasize the importance of identifying, gaining, and strengthening positive aspect of social support, especially in how to broaden a caregiver's social network while caring for a family member with dementia.</p>

Abstract:Objective: Caregiving of a relative with dementia is considered a chronic stressful situation that generates physical and psychological strain and that may have negative effects on caregivers' health. Many caregivers make the decision to enter their relatives in a nursing-home, however, there are few studies that analyze psychosocial (e.g., guilt) and biomarkers of cardiovascular risk (C-reactive protein, CRP) variables that are related to this decision during the caregiving process stress. The aim of this study was to analyze caregivers' differences between caregivers who finish the role of caring of their relatives with dementia and those who continue their caregiving role throughout the process of caring in a 3-year period. Methods: The sample consisted of 294 family caregivers of people with dementia and was divided in two groups; a) caregivers who institutionalized their relatives during a 3-year period (12.7%); and caregivers who maintained their role as caregivers (87.3%). Results: Preliminary results show that caregivers who institutionalized their relatives with dementia in some time point of the caregiving process presented at baseline more frequency of behavioral problems (t = -2.95; p < .01), more feelings of guilt (t = -3.52; p < .01) and compassion (t = -3.79; p < .01), reported less frequency of dysfunctional thoughts about caregiving (t = 1.99; p < .05) and presented higher levels of CRP (t = 2.72; p < .01), compared to caregivers who maintained their role as caregivers. In addition, caregivers who institutionalized their relative were younger (t= 2.13; p < .05) and reported more weekly hours (t= -3.46; p < .01) and more days (t= -3.01; p < .01) of home help compared to those caregivers who maintained their role. No significant effects were found for caregivers' gender (p = .38), daily hours caring (t= 1.54; p = .13) nor time caring (t=-1.1; p = .27). Discussion: The results of this study present several clinical implications. Knowing variables that are related to the decision of institutionalization could prevent it as well as it can be useful to accompany caregivers by providing support throughout the entire process.

Factors Associated with Gain in Caregiving from a Gender Perspective

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Gender differences in the variables of burden, anxiety, depression, and others associated with psychological distress have been found in studies on caregivers caring for a dependent relative, but a gender perspective is seldom used when analysing the positive aspects of caregiving. This study contributes to filling this gap by analysing gender differences in caregivers in a specific positive variable: gain. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used in a sample of 44 male and 96 female caregivers from Family Alzheimer Associations. Gender differences were analysed in demographic and psychological variables associated with the caregiving situation. Results: Female caregivers showed higher psychological distress than male caregivers, but gender differences in gain were only obvious when a deeper analysis of the GAIN scale responses was performed. The mediational role of psychological distress and other predictive variables showed a different pattern in male and female caregivers. The important predictive and mediating role that psychological distress plays in the greater perception of gains in caregiving and the result showing that female caregivers are the ones with poorer mental health support the need for preventive and therapeutic programs specifically targeting the positive aspects of caregiving in female caregivers. Conclusions: Three aspects could be highlighted in this study: family caregivers of AD patients perceived gain in the caregiving situation; gender plays a differential role in the perception of gain; and, finally, psychological distress should be the target when interventions are planned, not only to alleviate negative aspects but also to increase the positive aspects of caregiving.

Abstract:While providing home care for a family member with senile dementia is clearly extremely stressful, there has been little controlled research assessing the specific effects of this stress on caregiver psychological, social, and health functioning. To address this question, 44 primary caregivers of senile dementia patients and 44 matched controls completed a series of questionnaires and interview assessments. Caregivers reported significantly higher levels of depression and negative affect toward their relatives, and lower overall life satisfaction than controls. Caregivers also had significant impairment of their social activities, including visits with friends, vacations, and church attendance when compared with controls. Caregivers expressed less satisfaction with their social networks than did controls, but the groups did not differ in objective size of social network or number of network contacts. Caregivers reported poorer health, more prescription medication use, and higher utilization of health care than controls. Results clearly indicate the serious and wide-ranging effects of the stress of caregiving, and reinforce the importance of providing comprehensive services for caregiving families.

Psychological Distress in Alzheimer’s Disease Family Caregivers: Gender Differences and the Moderated Mediation of Resilience

Abstract:Different studies have reported gender differences in the variables of psychological distress, burden, social support, and resilience in family caregivers of relatives with Alzheimer’s disease; however, there is no clear evidence of the specific role of burden, social support, and resilience between gender and psychological distress. The aim of the present study is to clarify the role of these variables. Burden, psychological distress, social support, and resilience have been assessed in a cross-sectional design with a convenience sample of 140 family caregivers of relatives with Alzheimer’s disease. Our results confirm gender differences in terms of psychological distress, with higher scores found in female than in male caregivers, whilst male caregivers showed higher scores in terms of resilience than female caregivers. No gender differences have been found in terms of burden and social support. In addition, moderated mediation was obtained via the interaction of gender and social support on resilience, which plays a mediating role in psychological distress. Social support and resilience have shown a protective role concerning the mental health of caregivers, but female caregivers need higher social support to present a similar level of resilience to male caregivers.

Abstract:Objective: Little is known about caregiving across the spectrum of cognitive impairment [mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia] and how early life and sociocultural factors affect caregiver health. In this study, we characterized differences between caregivers of those with MCI versus those with dementia. Methods: A total of 158 caregivers were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, most of whom were dementia caregivers (65%). Caregivers completed questionnaires on depressive symptoms, self-rated health (SRH), perceived burden and stress, as well as psychosocial and demographic measures. Results: Caregivers of those with MCI reported fewer depressive symptoms and lower stress and burden compared with dementia caregivers. In adjusted analyses caregivers with greater stress reported more depressive symptoms. For SRH, at lower stress levels, having a sibling die before age 18 (ie, early life adversity) was associated with poorer SRH; at higher stress levels, having early life adversity was associated with better SRH. At lower burden levels, more live births were associated with worse SRH; at higher burden levels, more live births were associated with better SRH. Conclusions: Early life factors are relevant for caregivers of those with cognitive impairment and targeted prevention and early intervention may be helpful in alleviating caregiver burden and stress.

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the extent to which caregivers of patients with chronic illnesses experience death anxiety, and which variables from caregivers and patients might potentially be related to their death anxiety. It also aimed to compare the levels of death anxiety between patients and caregivers. Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Psychology Database, Cochrane, and Google Scholar were searched for original studies available until December 2022 that quantitatively addressed death anxiety in family and informal caregivers of individuals with chronic illnesses. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed, and a meta-analysis was conducted using Hedges' g as the effect size index and the DerSimonian–Laird method to analyze differences between patients and caregivers in death anxiety. The results of the 11 included studies showed moderate levels of death anxiety in caregivers, and the meta-analysis (k = 7; 614 patients and 586 caregivers) revealed non-significant differences between the death anxiety experienced by patients and caregivers (pooled Hedges' g = −0.03, 95% CI = −0.29 to 0.25, p = 0.802). Some sociodemographic and psychological factors (e.g., gender, depression, and anxiety) might be related to the death anxiety experienced, but additional research is necessary to validate these findings.

The relationship between perceived social support and depressive symptoms in informal caregivers of community-dwelling older persons in Chile

Abstract:Aim: Depression among caregivers of older persons is a serious concern, but it is often overlooked and neglected in developing countries. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived social support and depression in informal caregivers of community-dwelling older persons in Chile. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional secondary data on 377 dyads of community-dwelling older persons and their informal caregivers from a nationwide survey in Chile. The Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire (FSSQ) was used to measure caregivers' perceived social support, and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale assessed their depression. Results: In this study, 76.9% of the caregivers perceived a high level of social support, and 46.9% were assessed as having depression. Based on multivariable analysis, factors that decrease the likelihood of being depressed are a high level of social support (odds ratio (OR) = 0.311, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.167-0.579) and having taken holidays in the past 12 months (OR = 0.513, 95%CI: 0.270-0.975). Factors that increase the likelihood of being depressed are being a female caregiver (OR = 2.296, 95%CI: 1.119-4.707), being uninsured (OR = 4.321, 95%CI: 1.750-10.672), being the partner or spouse of the care recipient (OR = 3.832, 95%CI: 1.546-9.493), and the number of hours of care (OR = 1.053, 95%CI: 1.021-1.085). Conclusion: Higher levels of perceived social support and holidays were associated with lower levels of depression. However, being female, being the care recipient's partner or spouse, being uninsured, and having long care periods had detrimental effects. Interventions to preserve and enhance perceived social support could help improve depressive symptoms in informal caregivers. Additionally, support should be available to caregivers who are women, uninsured, and the care recipient's partner or spouse, as well as those who provide care for long hours, to ensure they have respite from their caregiving role.

Abstract:Most research in dementia family caregiving field has been guided by the stress and coping model, which holds a caregiver-centered perspective look at the family caregiving scenario. This individualistic approach of mainstream caregiving research does not allow to explain the relational aspects and variables related to the interaction between caregivers and the person with dementia (PWD), which have been underexplored until today. However, more systemic and dyad-centered approaches are needed to enrich our understanding of this chronic stress scenario. How caregivers perceive their way of caring for the PWD may exert a central role in the stress and coping model, and it may be potentially related to characteristics of the PWD (problematic behaviors and functional capacity), and caregivers ́ distress and coping variables. This study aimed to develop and test a valid and reliable instrument to measure caregivers ́ self-perceived caring style and explore these potential associations. This communication will present preliminary evidence from family dementia caregivers who volunteered to participate and were interviewed to assess sociodemographic data, stressors, psychological outcomes (anxiety and depression) and the following interaction-related variables: self-perceived caregiving interaction style, expressed emotion and quality of the relationship in the dyad (past and present). A sample of 100 participants is expected, as the project is currently going on. The Caregivers ́ Self-Perceived Caring Style Scale (SPCSS) has been developed to measure 6 potential aspects of caregivers' way of caring for the PWD: calmness, tenderness/lovingness, acceptance/validation, control/structure, overprotection, hostility, and communication facilitation. Preliminary reliability and validity analyses support good psychometric properties of the scale, as well as significant correlations between the different styles of caring and characteristics of the PWD, caregivers ́ gender and kinship with the PWD, depression and anxiety symptoms, quality of the dyad relationship and expressed emotion. Implications for caregiving research and for the development of effective interventions to alleviate caregivers ́ distress will be discussed.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationships between daily stress, social support, and the mental health of dementia family caregivers. Methods: A national sample of family caregivers ( N = 165) completed daily diary surveys over 21 days ( n = 2,841). Mixed-level models were used to examine the daily odds of experiencing depression and anxiety-related symptoms when risk factors, such as the stress of managing behavioral symptoms of dementia (BSDs) exhibited by the person living with dementia, and protective factors, such as social support, were reported on a given day. Results: Dementia caregivers were more likely to report depression and anxiety-related symptoms when BSDs were present and perceived as more bothersome than usual. Specific BSDs, including restless behaviors and intense emotions, were also found to increase the daily odds of experiencing depression and anxiety symptoms. The daily odds of depression symptoms decreased on days when caregivers reported receiving instrumental support, while the daily odds of anxiety symptoms increased on days when caregivers reported receiving emotional support. Conclusions: The daily odds of experiencing depression and anxietyvary based on the presence of specific BSDs and social support. These findings support the need for targeted interventions to improve the day-to-day well-being of dementia family caregivers.
