Abstract:Sex effects on ventilatory and oxygen consumption (V̇O2) measurements during exercise have been identified in humans. This study's aim was to evaluate the hypothesis that there are sex effects on ventilatory and V̇O2 measurements in exercising, untrained yearling Thoroughbreds (Tb). Forty-one Tbs (16 colts, 25 fillies; 19.8 ± 1.4 months old) were recruited. Physiological, ventilatory and exercise data were gathered from horses exercising unridden at high intensity on an all-weather track from a global positioning-heart rate unit and a portable ergospirometry system. Data were analysed with an unpaired Student's t-test and the Benjamini-Hochberg correction for multiple testing (P ≤ 0.05 significant). Mean bodyweight (BW, P = 0.002) and wither height (P = 0.04) were greater for colts than fillies. There were no differences in physiological and exercise data and absolute peak V̇O2 between groups. However, fillies had a higher mass specific peak V̇O2 (P = 0.03) than colts (121.5 ± 21.6 mL/kg.min vs. 111.9 ± 27.4 mL/kg.min). The peak breathing frequency was greater for fillies (P < 0.001) while the peak inspiratory (P < 0.001) and expiratory air flow (P < 0.001), peak expiratory tidal volume (VTE; P < 0.001) and peak minute ventilation (V̇E; P = 0.01) were greater for colts; there were no differences for peak VTE and V̇E when adjusted for BW. Differences in BW explain the differences in mass specific peak V̇O2 between groups. Given their morphological differences, it is likely that lung volumes and airway diameters are smaller for fillies, resulting in greater resistance and lower air flows and volumes. Further research is required to investigate the ventilatory differences and how they may change with maturation and impact performance.
Moderate-intensity training in hypoxia improves exercise performance and glycolytic capacity of skeletal muscle in horses

Abstract:We investigated whether moderate-intensity training of horses in moderate hypoxia for 4 weeks elicits greater adaptations in exercise performance, aerobic capacity, and glycolytic/oxidative metabolism in skeletal muscle compared to normoxic training. In a randomized crossover study design, seven untrained Thoroughbred horses (5.9 ± 1.1 years, 508 ± 9 kg) completed 4 weeks (3 sessions/week) of two training protocols consisting of 3-min cantering at 70% of maximal oxygen consumption ( V˙O2max ) in hypoxia (HYP; FI O2 = 14.7%) and normoxia (NOR; FI O2 = 21.0%) with a 4-month washout period. Normoxic incremental exercise tests (IET) were conducted before and after training. Biopsy samples were obtained from the middle gluteal muscle before IET and monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) protein expression and glycolytic/mitochondrial enzyme activities were analyzed. Data were analyzed using mixed models (p < 0.05). Running speed was 7.9 ± 0.2 m/s in both groups and arterial oxygen saturation during training in NOR and HYP were 92.9 ± 0.9% and 75.7 ± 3.9%, respectively. Run time in HYP (+9.7%) and V˙O2max in both groups (NOR, +6.4%; HYP, +4.3%) at IET increased after 4 weeks of training. However, cardiac output, arterial-mixed venous O2 difference, and hemoglobin concentration at exhaustion were unchanged in both conditions. While MCT1 protein and citrate synthase activity did not increase in both conditions after training, MCT4 protein (+13%), and phosphofructokinase activity (+42%) increased only in HYP. In conclusion, 4 weeks of moderate-intensity hypoxic training improves exercise performance and glycolytic capacity of skeletal muscle in horses.

Abstract:Limited data are available for the influence of physical training in jumping horses at the background of booster vaccination. The aim of the study was to establish the effects of physical exercise applied at the background of booster vaccination against equine herpes virus 4/1 (EHV 4/1) and equine influenza virus (EIV) on changes in the erythron, breathing and pulse rates of horses. The differences were investigated between vaccinated and exercised horses and vaccinated-only controls. Fifteen Hanoverian geldings were distributed into 3 groups: group А, 3 non-vaccinated animals; group В, 6 vaccinated and group С, 6 vaccinated horses submitted to physical exercise. Horses from groups B and C were vaccinated 1 year ago against EHV 4/1 and EIV. Вlood samples were evaluated for erythron parameters following standard procedures. The pulse and breathing rates were determined during the 14-day study period. The physical training of horses resulted in most substantial increase in red blood cell count, haemoglobin and haematocrit on post exercise hour 0, day 1 and day 11; all values were within the reference ranges except for haemoglobin on hour 0. The red blood cell indices MCV and MCH were not significantly altered vs initial level except for MCHC on day 2 and day 11. Pulse and breathing rates were enhanced on post exercise hours 0 and 2 vs initial level and groups A and B. The results are important for evaluation of training effects on aerobic potential enhancing the physical performance.
On Ground Experiments of Free-flyer Space Robot Simulator in Intervention Missions

Abstract:Robots exploitation for hazardous space environment is challenging the planetary missions, and will have a special role in the assembly and maintenance of International Space Station. In orbit support of extra vehicular activities (EVA), autonomous target identification and manipulation, will enable space robots more and more to substitute astronauts and time delayed teleoperation. Robust and reliable applications of free-flyer space robots are mainly characterized by the dynamic coupling between the motion of the arm and the drift of the spacecraft. Attitude modification is highly undesirable for tracking or manipulation tasks with accuracy, for directional antennas misalignment and for EVA performed close to manned space vehicles. In order to compensate the spacecraft attitude induced motions or to regulate the attitude at a fixed value, the proposed coordinated control exploits both coupled dynamics of the spacecraft-manipulator system and non-holonomic constraint due to angular momentum.
A proteomics perspective on 2 years of high-intensity training in horses: a pilot study

Abstract:The human plasma proteome is rather well studied, but not that of other species, including horses. The aims of this study were to (1), explore differences in plasma proteomic profile of young elite harness trotters kept under standardised conditions and subjected to two different training programmes for 2 years and (2) explore changes in proteomic profile over time during the training period. From September at age 1.5 year to March at age 2 years, 16 Standardbred horses were exposed to the same training programme. In March, high-intensity training was introduced and the horses were divided into two training groups (High and Low). Blood samples were collected at rest in December as 1.5-year-olds, July as 2-year-olds, December as 2.5-year-olds and December as 3.5-year-olds. Untargeted proteomics was performed and a hypothesis-generating approach was used in statistical analysis (t-tests). At the age of 2.5 years, the level of serotransferrin was higher in the High group ( P = 0.01) and at least at one sampling occasion, proteins associated with fat metabolism, oxidant/antioxidant processes, cardiovascular responses, bone formation and inflammation were lower in High group compared to Low ( P < 0.05). Analyses of changes over time revealed that levels of proteins involved in energy metabolism, red cell metabolism, circulation, oxidant/antioxidant activity, bone formation, inflammation, immune modulation and cellular and vascular damage changed ( P < 0.05). The results indicate that proteomics analysis of blood plasma could be a viable tool for evaluation of exercise adaptations, performance and for health monitoring, with several potential biomarkers identified in this study.

Abstract:Exercise-induced hypervolemia is normal in racehorses. Stress failure of the blood-gas barrier causes EIPH and occurs when the transmural pulmonary capillary (Pcap)-alveolar pressure difference (Ptm) exceeds the barrier's stress failure threshold. Why Pcap increases is incompletely understood. We hypothesized that alterations in blood volume (BV) affect left ventricular (LV) and pulmonary arterial wedge (PAW) pressures, and Pcap, and correspondingly affect EIPH severity. Six thoroughbreds with EIPH underwent treadmill exercise at the same speed (≈11.9m/s [11.1, 12.2]; median [IQR]) before (≈119%V̇O 2 max; B), 2hr after 14L depletion of blood (≈132%V̇O 2 max; D) and 2hr after reinfusing the blood (≈111%V̇O 2 max; R). LV, pulmonary arterial (PAP), PAW and intrapleural (Ppl) pressures were measured throughout exercise. Pcap = (PAP+PAW)/2 and Ptm = Pcap - Ppl. EIPH severity was assessed 60min post-exercise by tracheoendoscopy (EIPHgrade) and bronchoalveolar lavage erythrocyte count (BALRBC). A mixed-effect model and Tukey post-hoc test analyzed effects of BV changes on LV, PAW, Pcap, Ppl, Ptm and EIPH. p≤0.05 was significant. EIPH severity was affected by BV (EIPHgrade: p=0.01, BALRBC: p=0.003). Peak Ptm was not different between B (146mmHg [140; 151]) and R (151mmHg [137; 160]) but was lower for D (128mmHg [127; 130]; B: p=0.005, R: p=0.02). LV end diastolic pressure (LVED) was correlated with maxPcap (r 2 =0.52, p=0.001). Ppl was unaffected by changes in BV. Vascular pressures and Ppl fluctuated constantly during exercise and independently influenced Ptm. Circulating BV but not exercise intensity had a major effect on LVED, Pcap and Ptm, and was correlated with EIPH severity in thoroughbred racehorses (r 2 =0.48, p=0.001).

Abstract:Horses participating in endurance events encounter enormous physical challenges. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) have been reported before and after endurance rides, but these have not been determined during the rides. Moreover, the modulation in HRV and haematology in horses with different ride results (completed a course or disqualified due to irregular gait) have not been elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate changes in HR, HRV, and haematological parameters during novice endurance rides and to compare these parameters between horses that successfully completed the course (SC) or were disqualified for irregular gait (FTQ-GA). Beat-to-beat (RR) intervals of 16 healthy horses (aged 6-14 years) were recorded before and throughout the approximately 40 km endurance event. Blood samples were taken at the pre-ride inspection and after passing each veterinary inspection. HRV and haematology measures were determined from nine SC and seven FTQ-GA horses. Horses with different ride results demonstrated distinctive physiological stress responses. Increases in PCV, RBC, WBC and neutrophils after completing the ride were found only in SC horses, implying that they were ridden with greater effort than FTQ-GA horses. A reduction in HRV during warm-up, followed by a significant reduction during the first and second riding phases, was observed. HRV returned to baseline at the compulsory rest period of both phases. FTQ-GA horses experienced lower RR intervals, RR triangular index, modified deceleration capacity, very-low-frequency band, and parasympathetic nervous system index, coinciding with higher HR and sympathetic nervous system and stress indices than SC horses. These results indicated that endurance horses revealed a shift toward sympathetic activity during the ride. Lower parasympathetic activity in FTQ-GA horses suggests they were under more stress or discomfort than SC horses in novice endurance rides. These results have welfare implications, indicating the need for additional rest breaks in FTQ-GA horses.
Respiratory oscillometry testing in relation to exercise in healthy and asthmatic Thoroughbreds

Abstract:Background: Racehorses may experience exercise-induced bronchodilation or bronchoconstriction, with potential differences between healthy and asthmatic individuals. Objectives: To identify exercise-related lung function variations by oscillometry in racehorses, compare lung function between healthy and mild equine asthma (MEA) horses, assess oscillometry's potential as a predictor of racing fitness. Study design: Prospective case-control clinical study. Methods: Fourteen Thoroughbred racehorses (5 healthy, 9 MEA) underwent a protocol including respiratory oscillometry at rest, exercise with fitness monitoring, oscillometry at 15 and 45 min post-exercise, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALf) cytology. Oscillometry parameters (resistance [Rrs] and reactance [Xrs]) were compared within and between healthy and MEA groups at different timepoints. Associations between Rrs and Xrs at rest and 15 min post-exercise and BALf cytology and fitness indices were evaluated. Results: MEA horses showed higher Rrs at 15 min post-exercise (0.6 ± 0.2 cmH2 O/L/s) than healthy horses (0.3 ± 0.1 cmH2 O/L/s) (p < 0.01). In healthy horses, Rrs decreased at 15 min post-exercise compared with resting values (0.5 ± 0.1 cmH2 O/L/s) (p = 0.04). In MEA horses, oscillometry parameters did not vary with time. Post-exercise Xrs inversely correlated with total haemosiderin score (p < 0.01, r2 = 0.51). Resting Rrs inversely correlated with speed at 200 bpm (p = 0.03, r2 = -0.61), and Xrs with maximum heart rate (HR) during exercise (p = 0.02, r2 = -0.62). Post-exercise Rrs inversely correlated with mean (p = 0.04, r2 = -0.60) and maximum speed (p = 0.04, r2 = -0.60), and HR variability (p < 0.01, r2 = -0.74). Main limitations: Small sample size, oscillometry repeatability not assessed, potential interference of upper airway obstructions, external variables influencing fitness indices. Conclusions: Oscillometry identified lung function differences between healthy and MEA horses at 15 min post-exercise. Only healthy horses exhibited exercise-induced bronchodilation. Oscillometry showed potential in predicting subclinical airway obstruction.

Abstract:Abstract Changes in serum biochemistry and skeletal muscle of horses in response to individual endurance rides of varying distance have been reported, as have the effects of submaximal treadmill training. This study evaluated the effects of a controlled field endurance training programme on energy metabolism. Five Arabian horses 6.8 ± 2.0 years (mean ± standard deviation) were trained for 16 weeks over progressively longer distances. The biceps femoris, triceps long head, and semitendinosus muscles were biopsied before and after 4-weekly runs of 10, 20 and 30 miles, respectively, and before and after 10, 20, 30 and 50 miles of a fourth run at the end of the training programme to measure 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HAD) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activities and triglyceride (TG) and glycogen concentrations in those biopsies. Blood samples were obtained simultaneously to measure serum TG, free fatty acid (FFA), glycerol, glucagon, insulin, and cortisol concentrations. Data were analysed using RM-ANOVA for effects of training and distance. was considered significant. Training increased resting glycogen and TG concentrations in the biceps ( , ), triceps ( , ) and semitendinosus ( , ), respectively. Both HAD and SDH activities increased in the biceps femoris ( ; ) and triceps ( ; ), respectively, but not in the semitendinosus. There was no training effect detected on serum hormone responses to exercise distance although serum glycerol ( ), glucagon ( ) and cortisol ( ) concentrations increased with increasing run distance, while insulin concentration decreased ( ). Glucagon and cortisol concentrations were correlated (r = 0.67; ). Serum TG decreased with exercise but at a slower rate following training, and serum FFA were higher during exercise following training when compared to the partially trained state. Overall, endurance training enhanced peripheral mobilisation of fat and its utilisation by working muscle, and resting muscle glycogen stores increased.
Functional and Morphological Adaptations in the Heart of Children Aged 12-14 Years following Two Different Endurance Training Protocols

Abstract:This study investigated the cardiac functional and the morphological adaptations because of two endurance training protocols. Untrained children (N = 30, age: 12-14 years) were divided into three groups (N = 10/group). The first group did not perform any session (CONTROL), the second performed ventilatory threshold endurance training (VTT) for 12 weeks (2 sessions/week) at an intensity corresponding to the ventilatory threshold (VT) and the third (IT) performed two sessions per week at 120% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Two other sessions (30 min running at 55-65% of VO2max) per week were performed in VVT and IT. Echocardiograms (Left Ventricular end Diastolic Diameter, LVEDd; Left Ventricular end Diastolic Volume, LVEDV; Stroke Volume, SV; Ejection Fraction, EF; Posterior Wall Thickness of the Left Ventricle, PWTLV) and cardiopulmonary ergospirometry (VO2max, VT, velocity at VO2max (vVO2max), time in vVO2max until exhaustion (Tlim) was conducted before and after protocols. Significant increases were observed in both training groups in LVEDd (VTT = 5%; IT = 3.64%), in LVEDV (VTT = 23.7%; ITT = 13.6%), in SV (VTT = 25%; IT = 16.9%) but not in PWTLV and EF, after protocols. No differences were noted in the CONTROL group. VO2max and VT increased significantly in both training groups by approximately 9% after training. Our results indicate that intensity endurance training does not induce meaningful functional and morphological perturbations in the hearts of children.

Abstract:The plasma metabolomic profile of elite harness horses subjected to different training programmes was explored. All horses had the same training programme from 1.5 until 2 years of age and then high-intensity training was introduced, with horses divided into high and low training groups. Morning blood samples were collected at 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3.5 years of age. The plasma was analysed using targeted absolute quantitative analysis and a combination of tandem mass spectrometry, flow-injection analysis and liquid chromatography. Differences between the two training groups were observed at 2 years of age, when 161 metabolites and sums and ratios were lower (e.g. ceramide and several triglycerides) and 51 were higher (e.g. aconitic acid, anserine, sum of PUFA cholesteryl esters and solely ketogenic AAs) in High compared with low horses. The metabolites aconitic acid, anserine, leucine, HArg synthesis and sum of solely ketogenic AAs increased over time, while beta alanine synthesis, ceramides and indole decreased. Therefore high-intensity training promoted adaptations linked to aerobic energy production and amino acid metabolism, and potentially also affected pH-buffering and vascular and insulin responses.

Heat acclimation improves exercise performance in hot conditions and increases heat shock protein 70 and 90 of skeletal muscles in Thoroughbred horses

Abstract:This study aimed to determine whether heat acclimation could induce adaptations in exercise performance, thermoregulation, and the expression of proteins associated with heat stress in the skeletal muscles of Thoroughbreds. Thirteen trained Thoroughbreds performed 3 weeks of training protocols, consisting of cantering at 90% maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) for 2 min 2 days/week and cantering at 7 m/s for 3 min 1 day/week, followed by a 20-min walk in either a control group (CON; Wet Bulb Globe Temperature [WBGT] 12-13°C; n = 6) or a heat acclimation group (HA; WBGT 29-30°C; n = 7). Before and after heat acclimation, standardized exercise tests (SET) were conducted, cantering at 7 m/s for 90 s and at 115% VO2max until fatigue in hot conditions. Increases in run time (p = 0.0301), peak cardiac output (p = 0.0248), and peak stroke volume (p = 0.0113) were greater in HA than in CON. Pulmonary artery temperature at 7 m/s was lower in HA than in CON (p = 0.0332). The expression of heat shock protein 70 (p = 0.0201) and 90 (p = 0.0167) increased in HA, but not in CON. These results suggest that heat acclimation elicits improvements in exercise performance and thermoregulation under hot conditions, with a protective adaptation to heat stress in equine skeletal muscles.
A Preliminary Investigation into Ridden Water Submersion Training as an Adjunct to Current Condition Training Protocols in Performance Horses

Abstract:This observational study aimed to elucidate the effects of RWST on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems of horses and concurrently determine whether RWST limits distal limb temperature increases previously reported during gallop training on land. A group of 15 clinically sound international event horses were recruited, and heart rate (HR), speed (km/h) and thermal images of the distal limb were analysed at set intervals during RWST training. Intervals of RWST produced a total mean HRmax value of 65.18 ± 3.76%, which is within the parameters for increased aerobic stamina. Mean HR increased significantly (p < 0.01) while mean distal limb temperature decreased significantly (p < 0.01) between warm-up and RWST, which contrasts with positive correlations previously reported during gallop training on land. These preliminary results suggest that RWST can be classed as a moderate submaximal intensity exercise in elite international event horses whilst restricting an increase in temperature of the distal limb that is commonly associated with tendon rupture. Horses competing at very elite levels of eventing only represent a small percentage of the total performance population; therefore, further research is needed to ascertain the physiological effects of RWST in non-elite performance horses, as well as horses competing across various equestrian disciplines.
Upper airway endoscopy in exercising horses: Findings in 164 barrel racing horses with respiratory clinical signs and/or poor performance

Abstract:Barrel racing involves sprinting through a cloverleaf pattern in under 20 s. The prevalence of upper airway obstructions (UAO) in barrel racers is unknown, thus a retrospective analysis of 164 client-owned horses referred for overground endoscopy (OGE) between 2014 and 2022 was performed. Referring complaints included respiratory noise, cough, epistaxis, behaviour (owner reported stress/anxiety, refusal to enter arena, excessive head shaking), and/or poor performance. Horses performed a standardized exercise test with low and high-speed components. Videoendoscopic recordings were systematically scored by one experienced clinician. Exercising abnormalities included palatal instability (PI), intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (iDDSP), nasopharyngeal collapse (NPC), recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN), ventro-medial luxation of the apex of the corniculate process of the arytenoid (VLAC), medial deviation of the aryepiglottic fold (MDAF), vocal fold collapse (VFC), and cricotracheal ligament collapse. Associations between co-existing UAOs, age and sex were examined (McNemar's test; logistic regression; P < 0.05). During exercise, 24/164 (15%) horses had no UAO. In the remaining 140 horses, 56% had two or more. NPC was observed in 68/140 (49%), PI in 59/140 (42%), iDDSP in 55/140 (39%), VFC in 38/140 (27%), RLN in 27/140 (19%), VLAC in 14/140 (10%), MDAF in 8/140 (6%) and cricotracheal ligament collapse in 8/140 (6%). Nasopharyngeal collapse and RLN were primarily Grade 3 and Grade B, respectively. Associations exist between several co-existing UAOs, but not age or sex. Abnormalities were more frequent at low-speed (55%) than high-speed (22%), highlighting the importance of OGEs at different exercise intensities. Multiple UAOs appear common in barrel racers with clinical presentations.
Heart Rate Responses during Sport-Specific High-Intensity Circuit Exercise in Child Female Gymnasts

Abstract:This study examined heart rate (HR) responses during a sport-specific high-intensity circuit training session to indirectly assess cardiorespiratory stress in child athletes. Seventeen, female gymnasts, aged 9–11 years performed two 5-min 15 s sets of circuit exercise, interspersed by a 3 min rest interval. Each set included five rounds of five gymnastic exercises (7 s work, 7 s rest) executed with maximal effort. During the first circuit training set, peak heart rate (HR) was 192 ± 7 bpm and average HR was 83 ± 4% of maximum HR (HRmax), which was determined in a separate session. In the second set, peak HR and average HR were increased to 196 ± 8 bpm (p < 0.001, d = 0.55) and to 89 ± 4% HRmax (p < 0.001, d = 2.19), respectively, compared with the first set. HR was above 80% HRmax for 4.1 ± 1.2 min during set 1 and this was increased to 5.1 ± 0.4 min in set 2 (p < 0.001, d = 1.15). Likewise, HR was above 90% of HRmax for 2.0 ± 1.2 min in set 1 and was increased to 3.4 ± 1.7 min in set 2 (p < 0.001, d = 0.98). In summary, two 5-min 15 s sets of high-intensity circuit training using sport-specific exercises, increased HR to levels above 80% and 90% HRmax for extended time periods, and thus may be considered as an appropriate stimulus, in terms of intensity, for improving aerobic fitness in child female gymnasts.
The Emerging Role of Hypoxic Training for the Equine Athlete

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive discussion on the physiological impacts of hypoxic training, its benefits to endurance performance, and a rationale for utilizing it to improve performance in the equine athlete. All exercise-induced training adaptations are governed by genetics. Exercise prescriptions can be tailored to elicit the desired physiological adaptations. Although the application of hypoxic stimuli on its own is not ideal to promote favorable molecular responses, exercise training under hypoxic conditions provides an optimal environment for maximizing physiological adaptations to enhance endurance performance. The combination of exercise training and hypoxia increases the activity of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway compared to training under normoxic conditions. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) is known as a master regulator of the expression of genes since over 100 genes are responsive to HIF-1α. For instance, HIF-1-inducible genes include those critical to erythropoiesis, angiogenesis, glucose metabolism, mitochondrial biogenesis, and glucose transport, all of which are intergral in physiological adaptations for endurance performance. Further, hypoxic training could conceivably have a role in equine rehabilitation when high-impact training is contraindicated but a quality training stimulus is desired. This is achievable through purpose-built equine motorized treadmills inside commercial hypoxic chambers.

Abstract:In argumentative collaborative learning, learners have to externalize their knowledge and construct one knowledge from their knowledge by an argument. Although the quality of the argument is much important to enhance the knowledge construction, it is very difficult for learners without enough arguing-skills to achieve such high quality argument. Therefore, we developed a system that promotes utilization of knowledge conducted in preparation into the argument of face-to-face collaborative learning to enhance the quality of the argument in the collaborative learning. Our system judges real-time argument topics from learners' speech texts obtained by a speech recognizer and then makes the learners aware of learning contents associating with the argument topics during the collaborative learning. In our experiment, we confirmed usefulness of the proposed system by comparing with collaborative learning in an environment without a system.
Associations between postrace atrial fibrillation and measures of performance, racing history and airway disease in horses

Abstract:Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common performance limiting arrhythmia in racehorses. High dose exercise and airway disease promote AF in humans. Few studies have investigated epidemiological factors associated with AF in horses. Objectives: Explore variables relating to performance, exercise volume and postrace endoscopic findings in horses with AF. Animals: A total of 164 horses with poor race performance and postrace AF were compared to 321 horses with poor performance without AF (PP) and 314 horses performing to expectation (TE). Methods: Horse-level and race-level variables for horses racing in Australia and Hong Kong from 2009 to 2021 were compared using univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Postrace endoscopic exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) and tracheal mucus accumulation (TMA) grades for AF and PP horses were compared using chi-squared analysis. Results: Variables that were significant in the multivariable model of AF compared to TE were distance (lengths) behind the winner, (odds ratio [OR]; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.41 [1.32-1.51], P < .0001), cumulative prize money per start before the event (OR [95% CI] 1.02 [1.01-1.03], P = .01) and age (OR [95% CI] 0.72 [0.55-0.92], P = .01). More AF horses had EIPH grade ≥ 3 (23/109; 21.1%) than PP horses (7/213; 3.3%; OR [95%CI] 7.9 [3.3-20.2], P < .0001). Conclusions and clinical importance: Acute race performance was substantially impaired by AF but career earnings before the event were not inferior. Exercise volume did not promote AF. Higher grades of EIPH found in AF horses suggests a mechanistic relationship between these conditions.
