Abstract:Treated wastewater has emerged as an alternate resource to meet the increasing demands for water and clean energy. Decentralised wastewater management systems are gaining importance in developing nations to improve the efficiency and increase the turnover of wastewater treatment. Wastewater characterisation and monitoring are critical for applications such as resource recovery and disease surveillance. Moreover, characterisation of raw wastewater also aids in determining an optimal approach for treatment. In the Indian subcontinent, wastewater analysis facilities are few and thus located at a distance from the wastewater source or wastewater treatment plant. Storage conditions can have a significant impact on wastewater quality. A comparative study of the change in physico-chemical characteristics (pH, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand) of domestic wastewater stored at 30–32 °C and at 4 °C showed a significant variation over time. These results make it amply clear that cold storage facilities are critical for storage and transportation of samples in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Financial investments to enhance laboratory facilities for wastewater characterisation would go a long way in effectively utilizing wastewater as a resource.
