Abstract:Over the past few years, marked increases in ground-level ozone (O-3) concentration has been detected over much of eastern China. These high levels of O-3 pollution have been demonstrated to be detrimental to human health and plant growth, which requires urgent control on China's O-3 pollution. Among the various control measures, diurnal regulations of VOCs were adopted in some regions in China. For example, several local governments encourage factories with notable VOCs emissions shift their manufacturing processes to the nighttime; some governments also offer discount for night refueling. However, the effects of this diurnal regulation approach are still unclear. To evaluate the effectiveness of this measure, we proposed a quantitative assessment using WRF-CAMx air quality model. The assessment was systematically implemented at multiple time and spatial scales. Results at the regional scale revealed that the diurnal regulation of VOCs could slightly redistribute hourly O-3 concentrations and had minor influence on hourly peak O-3 concentration. The effects of this measure on hourly O-3 concentrations varied substantially across different cities: positive or negative impacts on O-3 concentrations were both found at the city level. At the daily scale, the variations of maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8) O-3 concentrations were distributed between -1% and 1%, accounting for about 88%, 76%, 65% of the entire days in key regions under S1, S2, S3; the average O-3-polluted days demonstrated an increasing trend in "2 + 26''cities and YRD, but for FWP and PRD, there were little changes in average number of O-3-polluted days. And at the monthly scale, the effects were not satisfactory, monthly average MDA8 O-3 demonstrated an increasing trend under VOCs regulation scenarios in "2 + 26" cities, FWP and YRD; Increasing or decreasing trends in monthly average MDA8 O-3 were both found at the city level, but most of the variations were less than 1%. In general, Diurnal regulation of VOCs may not be effective in controlling ozone pollution at the regional scale. Measures proposed to control O-3 pollution need more refined management and scientific evaluation before wide implementation.
Increased diurnal difference of NO2 concentrations and its impact on recent ozone pollution in eastern China in summer

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a key tropospheric O3 precursor. Since 2013, efforts to decrease air pollution in China have driven substantial declines in annual NO2 concentrations, whereas ozone (O3) concentrations have increased. Based on nationwide NO2 observations and a regional air quality model (WRF-CMAQ), we analyzed trends in the diurnal difference (DD, the difference between nighttime and daytime concentrations) of NO2 concentrations across eastern China and in five national urban agglomerations (UAs) from 2014 to 2021, and explored the factors underlying such changes and the potential impacts on O3 pollution. We found that the observed DD of NO2 has increased in most cities and UAs, and that this trend can be primarily attributed to changes in anthropogenic emissions, based on comparison with DDs simulated with fixed anthropogenic emissions, which generally showed much weaker trends and little interannual variation. A sensitivity analysis using the WRF-CMAQ model was conducted to investigate the impact of a modified diurnal cycle of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions on O3 concentrations. The result revealed that enhancing the DD of NO2 would increase O3 concentrations in the morning and the daily maximum 8-h O3 concentrations in the cities with high NOx concentrations, as well as downwind areas of cities, indicating that greater DDs in NO2 is one of the reasons that have led to the enhanced China's O3 pollution in recent years.

Attenuated sensitivity of ozone to precursors in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region with the continuous NOx reduction within 2014–2018

Abstract:Facing the elevated surface summer O3 over North China in recent years with the continuous NOx reduction, we conducted the ozone-precursor sensitivity study in summer (July) in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH) under the 2018 and 2014 emissions, based on WRF-Chem model. On 2018 emission condition, 30% precursor reduction simulations presented the positive contribution of VOCs and the negative contribution of NOx to daytime O3. The occurrence probabilities of VOCs-sensitive, NOx-titration, mixed sensitive, NOx-sensitive, and non-sensitive regimes respectively reached 3-49%, 2-82%, 0-7%, 0-6% and 14-82% in the urban grids, and 2-32%,1-19%, 1-6%, 0-5% and 54-86% in the rural grids. For several widely used photochemical indicators, their values in VOCs-sensitive regime were well separated from those in NOx-sensitive regime, but the NOx-sensitive values were very similar to the non-sensitive values, which implied the inefficiency of these indicators in indicating NOx-sensitive regime. Finally, VOCs-sensitive regime was discerned based on the indicator HCHO/NO2, occupying about a third of areas in morning and dusk but shrinking to about a tenth of areas in 11:00-16:00 in BTH. And these areas apparently decreased from 2014 emission to 2018 emission. However, the rest areas of this region were under non-sensitive regime but not NOx-sensitive regime, for the noticeable O3 drop never happened in NOx reduction scenario. Meanwhile, the modeled O3/PAN in the areas under non-sensitive regime exceeded 60, which also implied the minor impact of local photochemistry on O3 there. Additionally, the responses of daytime O3 to precursor emissions in the urban grids were calculated, declining by 20.8% for NOx and 6.9% for VOCs from 2014 to 2018. Therefore, to solve the ozone pollution problem of BTH, the cross-region strategy coupled with the VOCs and NOx co-control will be essential.

Composition and Reactivity of Volatile Organic Compounds and the Implications for Ozone Formation in the North China Plain

Abstract:Enhanced ozone (O3) pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental concern in China, particularly for densely populated megacities and major city clusters. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the key precursors to O3 formation, have not been routinely measured. In this study, we characterize the spatial and temporal patterns of VOCs and examine the role of VOCs in O3 production in five cities (Dongying (DY), Rizhao (RZ), Yantai (YT), Weihai (WH), and Jinan (JN)) in the North China Plain (NCP) for two sampling periods (June and December) in 2021 through continuous field observations. Among various VOC categories, alkanes accounted for the largest proportion of VOCs in the cities. For VOCs, chemical reactivities, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alkenes were dominant contributors to O3 formation potential (OFP). Unlike inland regions, the contribution to OFP from OVOCs increased greatly at high O3 concentrations in coastal regions (especially YT). Model simulations during the O3 episode show that the net O3 production rates were 27.87, 10.24, and 10.37 ppbv/h in DY, RZ, and JN. The pathway of HO2 + NO contributed the most to O3 production in JN and RZ, while RO2 + NO was the largest contributor to O3 production in DY. The relative incremental reactivity (RIR) revealed that O3 formation in DY was the transitional regime, while it was markedly the VOC-limited regime in JN and RZ. The O3 production response is influenced by NOx concentration and has a clear daily variation pattern (the sensitivity is greater from 15:00 to 17:00). The most efficiencies in O3 reduction could be achieved by reducing NOx when the NOx concentration is low (less than 20 ppbv in this study). This study reveals the importance of ambient VOCs in O3 production over the NCP and demonstrates that a better grasp of VOC sources and profiles is critical for in-depth O3 regulation in the NCP.

Abstract:We analyzed the measurements of ozone (O-3) and its precursors made at rural/suburban sites downwind of four large Chinese cities Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Lanzhou, to elucidate their pollution characteristics, regional transport, in situ production, and impacts of heterogeneous processes. The same measurement techniques and observation-based model were used to minimize uncertainties in comparison of the results due to difference in methodologies. All four cities suffered from serious O-3 pollution but showed different precursor distributions. The model-calculated in situ O-3 production rates were compared with the observed change rates to infer the relative contributions of on-site photochemistry and transport. At the rural site downwind of Beijing, export of the well-processed urban plumes contributed to the extremely high O-3 levels (up to an hourly value of 286 ppbv), while the O-3 pollution observed at suburban sites of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Lanzhou was dominated by intense in situ production. The O-3 production was in a volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited regime in both Shanghai and Guangzhou, and a NOx-limited regime in Lanzhou. The key VOC precursors are aromatics and alkenes in Shanghai, and aromatics in Guangzhou. The potential impacts on O-3 production of several heterogeneous processes, namely, hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), uptake of hydro peroxy radical (HO2) on particles and surface reactions of NO2 forming nitrous acid (HONO), were assessed. The analyses indicate the varying and considerable impacts of these processes in different areas of China depending on the atmospheric abundances of aerosol and NON, and suggest the urgent need to better understand these processes and represent them in photochemical models.
Meteorological and Chemical Impacts on Ozone Formation: A Case Study in Hangzhou, China

Abstract:Regional ozone pollution has become one of the most challenging problems in China, especially in the more economically developed and densely populated regions like Hangzhou. In this study, measurements of O3, CO, NOx and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), together with meteorological data, were obtained for the period July 1, 2013–August 15, 2013 at three sites in Hangzhou. These sites included an urban site (Zhaohui “ZH”), a suburban site (Xiasha “XS”) and a rural site (Qiandaohu “QDH”). During the observation period, both ZH and XS had a higher ozone level than QDH, with exceeding rates of 41.3% and 47.8%, respectively. Elevated O3 levels in QDH were found at night, which could be explained by less prominent NO titration effect in rural area. Detailed statistical analysis of meteorological and chemical impacts on ozone formation was carried out for ZH, and higher ozone concentration was observed when the wind direction was from the east. This is possibly due to emissions of VOCs from XS, a typical chemical industrial park located in 30km upwind area of ZH. A comprehensive comparison between three ozone episode periods and one non-episode period were made in ZH. It was concluded that elevated concentrations of precursors and temperatures, low relative humidity and wind speed and easterly-dominated wind direction contribute to urban ozone episodes in Hangzhou. VOCs reactivity analysis indicated that reactive alkenes like isoprene and isobutene contributed most to ozone formation. Three methods were applied to evaluate O3-VOCs-NOx sensitivity in ZH: VOCs/NOx ratio method, Smog Production Model (SPM) and Relative Incremental Reactivity (RIR). The results show that summer ozone in urban Hangzhou mostly presents VOCs-limited and transition region alternately. Our study implies that the increasing automobiles and VOCs emissions from upwind area could result in ozone pollution in urban Hangzhou, and synergistic reduction of VOCs and NOx will be more effective.

Abstract:Abstract. Elevated ground-level ozone (O3), reflecting atmospheric oxidative capacity, are of increasing concern. High levels of total oxidants (Ox= O3 + NO2) have been persistently observed as a feature of Beijing's air pollution. Beijing is a well-known megacity requiring the enforcement of stringent air quality controls as rapid economic growth continues. To evaluate the effect of air quality controls in recent years, ground-based on-line measurements at an urban site were conducted in summer and the variations in O3 with simultaneous changes in NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) between 2005 and 2011 were analyzed. Both NOx and total VOCs in Beijing decreased over the study period, 1.4 ppbv yr−1 and 1.6 ppbv yr−1, respectively. However, VOCs reactivity, in terms of OH loss rate, showed an indistinct statistical trend due to unsteady variations from naturally emitted isoprene, though some anthropogenic species showed decreasing trends, such as pentane, benzene and toluene. Meanwhile, daytime average O3 increased rapidly at an annual rate of 2.6 ppbv yr−1, around 5% yr−1 between 2005 and 2011. Considering the influence of NO titration effect and elevated regional ozone background in the North China Plain (NCP), the main reason for such an increase in oxidants was subject to "local" photochemistry. A simplified model was used to evaluate the effect of changes in the levels of ozone precursors on ozone production. We found that between 2001 and 2006, the production rate of total oxidants, P(Ox) increased rapidly due to increased VOC levels and decreasing NO2, while from 2006 to 2011 P(Ox) remained high, though decreased slightly as a consequence of the decrease in both VOC reactivity (−5% yr−1) and NOx (−4% yr−1). Observations have shown that Beijing's efforts to control air pollution were somehow effective in cutting ozone precursors, but still left higher ground-level ozone. We surmised that it resulted from potential contributions from OVOCs and regional transport near Beijing. Therefore, Beijing needs deeper cooperation with adjacent provinces to control ozone pollution together. To impel this kind of joint prevention and control program, ground-level ozone should become a mandatory index for air quality management, and a faster reduction of VOCs, especially reactive VOCs, in urban areas, should coordinate with national NOx emission control programs.
Response Surface Model Based Emission Source Contribution and Meteorological Pattern Analysis in Ozone Polluted Days

Abstract:Urban and regional ozone (O3) pollution is a public health concern and causes damage to ecosystems. Due to the diverse emission sources of O3 precursors and the complex interactions of air dispersion and chemistry, identifying the contributing sources of O3 pollution requires integrated analysis to guide emission reduction plans. In this study, the meteorological characteristics leading to O3 polluted days (in which the maximum daily 8-h average O3 concentration is higher than the China Class II National O3 Standard (160 mu g/m3)) in Guangzhou (GZ, China) were analyzed based on data from 2019. The O3 formation regimes and source apportionments under various prevailing wind directions were evaluated using a Response Surface Modeling (RSM) approach. The results showed that O3 polluted days in 2019 could be classified into four types of synoptic patterns (i.e., cyclone, anticyclone, trough, and high pressure approaching to sea) and were strongly correlated with high ambient temperature, low relative humidity, low wind speed, variable prevailing wind directions. Additionally, the cyclone pattern strongly promoted O3 formation due to its peripheral subsidence. The O3 formation was nitrogen oxides (NOx)-limited under the northerly wind, while volatile organic compounds (VOC)-limited under other prevailing wind directions. Anthropogenic emissions contributed largely to the O3 formation (54-78%) under the westerly, southwesterly, easterly, southeasterly, or southerly wind, but only moderately (35-47%) under the northerly or northeasterly wind. Furthermore, as for anthropogenic contributions, local emission contributions were the largest (39-60%) regardless of prevailing wind directions, especially the local NOx contributions (19-43%); the dominant upwind regional emissions contributed 12-46% (e.g., contributions from Dongguan were 12-20% under the southeasterly wind). The emission control strategies for O3 polluted days should focus on local emission sources in conjunction with the emission reduction of upwind regional sources.
New insight into formation mechanism, source and control strategy of severe O 3 pollution: The case from photochemical simulation in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area, Central China

Abstract:The Wuhan Metropolitan Area, located in Central China, has experienced severe O 3 pollution in recent years; thus urging to diagnose formation regime and propose reasonable control strategies. Multi-source data of air pollutants and meteorological factors in 4 cities during August 2019 when severe regional O 3 pollution occurred were obtained; then, in-situ O 3 formation mechanism, the O 3 -precursors sensitivity, the sources and control strategies of O 3 were evaluated based on the combination of the 0-D photochemical observation-based model and the positive matrix factorization model through the analysis of local ozone budget, the relative incremental reactivity, an empirical kinetic model approach and source apportionment. The results indicated the P(O 3 ) (net O 3 production rate) was 25 ppbv h −1 in Ezhou and 11–13 ppbv h −1 in other 3 cities. The dominated photochemical production of O 3 was NO + HO 2 reaction (62–71%), whereas the main pathway to destroy O 3 during daytime was NO 2 + OH (>70%) and nocturnal loss of O 3 with alkenes even reached up to 39–46%. Generally, O 3 formation was sensitive to AVOC (Anthropogenic Volatile Organic Compounds), in which reactive aromatics, OVOCs (Oxygenated VOCs), and alkenes (xylenes, ethylene, isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone, hexanal, toluene and methacrolein, specifically) as well as abundant i-pentane should be targeted to alleviate O 3 pollution. The highly reactive VOCs sources for O 3 formation in this region were vehicular exhaust (28–41%), industrial emissions (20–29% except Ezhou), and solvent use (17–29% except Huangshi). Co-reduction of O 3 precursors in aforementioned reactive emissions according to optimal ratios of AVOC to NO 2, i.e., 5:1 (Wuhan and Huanggang), 4:1 (Ezhou), and 6:1 (Huangshi), could achieve local O 3 effective mitigation. Surprisingly, P(O 3 ) could reduce by 38% and 48% under 40% AVOC cut accompanied by NO 2 in more contaminated cities (Wuhan and Ezhou). Overall, our study provides new insight to future collaborative O 3 alleviation strategies formulation in Central China, which quantified O 3 formation at different precursors levels in different cities suffering from regional O 3 pollution, concluded best precursors control ratios and confirmed validity of O 3 mitigation through precursors-oriented emission reduction in vital sources.

Revealing the modulation of boundary conditions and governing processes on ozone formation over northern China in June 2017

Abstract:In this study, ozonesonde data were used to evaluate the impact of different boundary conditions on the vertical distribution of ozone over urban Beijing. The comparison shows that the clean and static boundary conditions, referred to as PROFILE, apparently underestimate the ozone concentration over the upper troposphere and stratosphere, whereas the global chemical transport model (CTM) provides much more reasonable performance. Further investigation reveals that the boundary conditions exert larger impacts over areas with high altitudes and close distances to boundaries, such as the Tibetan Plateau, while they yield weak impacts on regions relatively far from the boundary, such as the North China Plain (NCP). Process analysis was conducted to investigate the modulation of physical and chemical processes on ozone formation in June 2017, illustrating that during the daytime of the high-O3 period, the photochemical reactions within the planetary boundary layer (PBL) almost become the only source favorable to ozone accumulation. Motivated by this phenomenon, we constructed a linear regression and found that the maximum daily 8-hr ozone (MDA8) ozone concentration was highly correlated with the surface ozone change rate and chemical reactions in the PBL during the pollution period, with MDA8 ozone exceeding 70 ppbv over NCP. Based on this relationship as well as the design of numerical experiments, we propose a strategy of dynamic emission control. Firstly, the emission reduction during the peak ozone formation period may weaken the fast chemical reactions in the PBL and subsequent surface ozone concentration. Secondly, emission reduction one or two days prior to an episode might achieve larger ozone reduction through the accumulation effect. Lastly, emission control outside of the NCP may surpass the local impact under favorable meteorological conditions. Therefore, the efficacy of dynamic emission control was striking when both the accumulation and transport effect were taken into consideration.

Abstract:Rapid economic growth and associated emission increase in China have led to severe air pollution in recent decades. As fine particulate matter concentration is decreasing due to strict control measures, ozone (O3) concentration has an increasing trend with adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model was used to investigate the formation of O3 in China during three high concentration episodes in summer 2013 and analyzed its sensitivity to emission changes. Compared with observation data, O3 performance met the EPA criteria of mean normalized bias (MNB) within ±0.15 in major parts of China including five megacities. The diurnal variation of O3 had similar trend with temperature. The August episode (6–12) had the highest daily maximum 1-h O3 of ∼100 ppb in North China Plain (NCP), while the July episode (11–19) had the lowest concentrations of ∼50 ppb. The O3 production rates (OPR) were higher at NCP and the Yangzi River Delta (YRD), but O3 production efficiencies (OPE) acted in contrary. O3 isopleth showed that NOx controlled O3 concentration in most areas of China. Reducing VOC would have minor effects on O3 concentrations while reducing NOx could largely reduce O3 concentration except for urban areas such as Shanghai and Guangzhou. Linear correlations were observed between secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and Ox (O3+NO2) concentrations in August at Shanghai and Guangzhou, indicating correlations between O3 and other photochemical compounds. This study provides valuable information for designing effective control strategies for O3 in China.

Abstract:In response to regional ozone (O3) pollution, Chinese government has implemented air pollution control measures in recent years. Here, a case study was performed at an O3-polluted city, Wuhu, in Yangtze River Delta region of China to investigate O3 variation trend and the relationship to its precursors after implementation of Clean Air Action Plan Phase II, which aims to reduce O3 pollution. The results showed that peak O3 concentration was effectively reduced since Clean Air Action Plan Phase II. Due to significant NOx reduction, O3 formation tended to shift from volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited regimes to NOx-limited regimes during 2018-2022. VOC/NOx ratios measured in 2022 revealed that peak O3 concentration tended to respond positively to NOx. Apart from high-O3 period, Wuhu was still in a VOC-limited regime. The relationship of maximum daily 8-h ozone average and NO2 followed a lognormal distribution with an inflection point at 20 μg m-3 of NO2, suggesting that Wuhu should conduct joint control of VOC and NOx with a focus on VOC reduction before the inflection point. Alkenes and aromatics were suggested to be preferentially controlled due to their higher ozone formation potentials. Using random forest meteorological normalization method, meteorology had a positive effect on O3 concentration in 2018, 2019 and 2022, but a negative effect in 2020 and 2021. The meteorology could explain 44.0 ± 19.1% of the O3 variation during 2018-2022. High temperature favors O3 production and O3 pollution occurred more easily when temperature was over 25 °C, while high relative humidity inhibits O3 generation and no O3 pollution was found at relative humidity above 70%. This study unveils some new insights into the trend of urban O3 pollution in Yangtze River Delta region since Clean Air Action Plan Phase II and the findings provide important references for formulating control strategies against O3 pollution.

Abstract:Ozone (O3) concentrations usually peak at midday by photochemical reactions and gradually decline after sunset due to chemical destruction and dry deposition. However, an increase in the frequency of elevated nocturnal ozone enhancement (NOE) and high nocturnal ozone value (HNOV) has been frequently observed in urban areas of eastern China, but the reasons are not well understood. In this study, taking a typical industrial city, ZiBo as a case study, we analyzed the trends, characteristics, and causes of the NOE and HNOV events in historical years by combining observations and model simulations. During the warm season (April-September) of 2017-2023, HNOV events are accompanied by low humidity, high temperature, large friction velocity, and a high boundary layer (52 days in total), whereas NOE events coincide with increases in humidity, wind speed, friction velocity, and boundary layer height (141 days in total). During the HNOV and NOE events, the nighttime average concentrations of Ox were 77 ± 7 and 12 ± 6 μg m-3 higher than the non-nocturnal O3 period, indicating enhanced atmospheric oxidizing capacity during nighttime. The modeling results indicate that both the HNOV and NOE events were mainly driven by vertical mixing and regional transport. We selected a typical period with high O3 pollution and frequent NOE and HNOV events to conduct the modeling study. Three typical nocturnal O3 events are identified: Case I was mainly driven by horizontal transport; while in the two subsequent cases, the vertical transport contribution was 80 μg m-3 h-1 (20:00 LT on June 21, 2021) and 35 μg m-3 h-1 (02:00 LT on June 26, 2021), respectively. Our study reveals that the O3 pollution in industrial cities has been extending to nighttime, primarily attributed to vertical mixing and horizontal transport within the boundary layer. This highlights the critical role of implementing regional joint control action to reduce primary emissions and eliminate residual ozone.

Abstract:Ozone (O3) pollution has become a noticeable problem in the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle in China. The April-September MDA8 O3 level increases significantly by 2.26 μg m-3 year-1 from 2015 to 2023, with meteorological factors occupying merely 18 % in line with multivariate linear regression. To reveal the impact of anthropogenic emissions on O3 increase, O3 production sensitivity is accurately diagnosed by deriving localized thresholds for satellite formaldehyde (HCHO) to NO2 ratio and validated by in-situ measurements and observation-based model. Tracking volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx through satellite HCHO and NO2, the O3 responses to precursor changes are assessed for long-term and special cases, and appropriate precursor reduction ratios are inferred. The results present that the transition range of satellite HCHO/NO2 from VOC-limited to NOx-limited in the region ranges from 2.7 to 4.3. The VOC-limited regime is concentrated in the urban areas of Chongqing and Chengdu as well as the central of the neighboring cities such as Deyang, Mianyang, and Meishan. The relative incremental reactivity from in-situ observations and box model at three sites in August 2019 demonstrates that O3 is most sensitive to anthropogenic VOC at urban and suburban sites, consistent with satellite results. Satellite and surface NO2 decrease at an annual rate of -2.1 % and - 2.9 % between 2015 and 2023, with larger decreases in Chengdu and Chongqing. In contrast, the trend of satellite HCHO is insignificant, indicating effective reduction in NOx but no significant reduction in VOC. This inappropriate reduction results in an increase in urban O3. The three short-term cases further validate the need for synergistic NOx and VOC reductions. Based on the relationship between O3 and satellite NO2 and HCHO, the minimum and optimal reduction ratios of VOC to NOx are 0.4:1 and 2.4:1 for the entire region, with higher ratios in Chengdu and Chongqing.

Abstract:In recent years, ozone (O 3 ) pollution has worsened in China and contributes frequently to air pollution problems. To support the implementation of coordinated control for ozone and fine particulate matter, it is essential to study the chemical compositions and sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are the crucial precursor of both ozone and fine particulate matter. In this study, 117 volatile organic compounds were monitored in 13 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban Agglomeration and Fenwei plain. Concentrations of total volatile organic compounds ranged from 42 to 279 μg/m 3 during the monitoring episode. In all 13 cities, alkanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatics and oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) were the dominant volatile organic compounds. Contributions of alkanes, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatics and oxygenated volatile organic compounds to total ozone formation potential (OFP) were 21.7%–32.6%, 21.0%–27.9%, 24.3%–50.8% and 28.6%–52.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the results of source apportionment by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that solvent usage, gasoline evaporation, vehicle emissions, petrochemical industry and combustion were essential volatile organic compounds sources in 13 cities. Moreover, the sensitivity of ozone production was studied using an Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach (EKMA) model, and it was found that ozone formation was volatile organic compounds limited in all 13 cities.

Abstract:Due to complicated ozone formation regimes controlled by both ozone precursors and meteorological conditions, the underlying drivers for soaring ozone concentrations in Beijing were limitedly examined. With ground observation and remotely sensed data, the variation of ground ozone concentrations at an urban AT (Aoti) station and a rural YF (Yufa) station in Beijing was examined and a notable upward trend of ozone concentrations at both stations was found from 2006 to 2017. Following this, through a statistical model, the relative contribution of meteorological conditions to long-term ozone variations at both stations was calculated as 2%–3%, indicating anthropogenic emissions were the major cause for long-term ozone variations in Beijing. Meanwhile, short-term ozone variations could be influenced significantly by seasonal and synoptic meteorological conditions. Furthermore, the long-term variations of ozone formation regimes across Beijing were analyzed using OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) retrieved HCHO VCDs (Vertical Column Densities)/NO2 VCDs, which were strongly correlated with ozone concentrations. The results suggested that the ozone formation regime for the AT urban station and YF rural station had changed from VOCs-limited and NOx-limited to VOCs-NOx-limited respectively. In this case, NOx-oriented emission-reduction measures for reducing PM2.5 concentrations might conversely enhance ozone concentrations in Beijing. Given the increasingly heterogeneous distribution of different ozone formation regimes across Beijing, emission-reduction strategies that balanced consider the reduction of VOCs and NOx emissions should be better designed and implemented according to local ozone formation regimes.

Abstract:Atmospheric oxidation capacity is the basis for converting freshly emitted substances into secondary products and is dominated by reactions involving hydroxyl radicals (OH) during daytime. In this study, we present in situ measurements of ROx radical (hydroxy OH, hydroperoxy HO2, and organic peroxy RO2) precursors and products; the measurements are carried out in four Chinese megacities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing) during photochemically polluted seasons. The atmospheric oxidation capacity is evaluated using an observation-based model and radical chemistry precursor measurements as input. The radical budget analysis illustrates the importance of HONO and HCHO photolysis, which account for ∼50 % of the total primary radical sources. The radical propagation is efficient due to abundant NO in urban environments. Hence, the production rate of secondary pollutants, that is, ozone (and fine-particle precursors (H2SO4, HNO3, and extremely low volatility organic compounds, ELVOCs) is rapid, resulting in secondary air pollution. The ozone budget demonstrates its high production in urban areas; also, its rapid transport to downwind areas results in rapid increase in local ozone concentrations. The O3–NOx–VOC (volatile organic compound) sensitivity tests show that ozone production is VOC-limited and that alkenes and aromatics should be mitigated first for ozone pollution control in the four studied megacities. In contrast, NOx emission control (that is, a decrease in NOx) leads to more severe ozone pollution. With respect to fine-particle pollution, the role of the HNO3–NO3 partitioning system is investigated using a thermal dynamic model (ISORROPIA 2). Under high relative humidity (RH) and ammonia-rich conditions, nitric acid converts into nitrates. This study highlights the efficient radical chemistry that maintains the atmospheric oxidation capacity in Chinese megacities and results in secondary pollution characterized by ozone and fine particles.
Ozone Production in Four Major Cities of China: Sensitivity to Ozone Precursors and Heterogeneous Processes

Abstract:Abstract. Despite a large volume of research over a number of years, our understandings of the key precursors that control tropospheric ozone production and the impacts of heterogeneous processes remain incomplete. In this study, we analyze measurements of ozone and its precursors made at rural/suburban sites downwind of four large Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Lanzhou. At each site the same measurement techniques were utilized and a photochemical box model based on the Master Chemical Mechanism (v3.2) was applied, to minimize uncertainties in comparison of the results due to differences in methodology. All four cities suffered from severe ozone pollution. At the rural site of Beijing, export of the well-processed urban plumes contributed to the extremely high ozone levels (up to an hourly value of 286 ppbv), while the pollution observed at the suburban sites of Shanghai, Guangzhou and Lanzhou was characterized by intense in-situ ozone production. The major anthropogenic hydrocarbons were alkenes and aromatics in Beijing and Shanghai, aromatics in Guangzhou, and alkenes in Lanzhou. The ozone production was found to be in a VOCs-limited regime in both Shanghai and Guangzhou, and a mixed regime in Lanzhou. In Shanghai, the ozone formation was most sensitive to aromatics and alkenes, while in Guangzhou aromatics were the predominant ozone precursors. In Lanzhou, either controlling NOx or reducing emissions of olefins from the petrochemical industry would mitigate the local ozone production. The potential impacts of several heterogeneous processes on the ozone formation were assessed. The hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), uptake of the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) on particles, and surface reactions of NO2 forming nitrous acid (HONO) present considerable sources of uncertainty in the current studies of ozone chemistry. Further efforts are urgently required to better understand these processes and refine atmospheric models.
Contrasting effects of clean air actions on surface ozone concentrations in different regions over Beijing from May to September 2013–2020

Abstract:Due to the nonlinear impacts of meteorology and precursors, the response of ozone (O 3 ) trends to emission changes is very complex over different regions in megacity Beijing. Based on long-term in-situ observations at 35 air quality sites (four categories, i.e., urban, traffic, northern suburban and southern suburban sites) and satellite data, spatiotemporal variability of O 3 , gaseous precursors, and O 3 -VOCs-NO x sensitivity were explored through multiple metrics during the warm season from 2013 to 2020. Additionally, the contribution of meteorology and emissions to O 3 was separated by a machine-learning-based de-weathered method. The annual averaged MDA8 O 3 and O 3 increased by 3.7 and 2.9 μg/m 3 /yr, respectively, with the highest at traffic sites and the lowest in northern suburb, and the rate of O x (O 3 + NO 2 ) was 0.2 μg/m 3 /yr with the highest in southern suburb, although NO 2 declined strongly and HCHO decreased slightly. However, the increment of O 3 and O x in the daytime exhibited decreasing trends to some extent. Additionally, NO x abatements weakened O 3 loss through less NO titration, which drove narrowing differences in urban-suburban O 3 and O x . Due to larger decrease of NO 2 in urban region and HCHO in northern suburb, the extent of VOCs-limited regime fluctuated over Beijing and northern suburb gradually shifted to transition or NO x -limited regime. Compared with the directly observed trends, the increasing rate of de-weathered O 3 was lower, which was attributed to favorable meteorological conditions for O 3 generation after 2017, especially in June (the most polluted month); whereas the de-weathered O x declined except in southern suburb. Overall, clean air actions were effective in reducing the atmospheric oxidation capacity in urban and northern suburban regions, weakening local photochemical production over Beijing and suppressing O 3 deterioration in northern suburb. Strengthening VOCs control and keeping NO x abatement, especially in June, will be vital to reverse O 3 increase trend in Beijing.

Abstract:Ground-level ozone (O3) has been an emerging air pollution in China and interacts with fine particulate matters (PM2.5). We synthesized observations of O3 and its precursors in two summer months of 2020 at 10 sites in the Zhejiang province, East China and simulated the in situ photochemistry. O3 pollution in the northeastern Zhejiang province was more serious than that in the southwest. The site-average daytime O3 increment correlated well (R2 = 0.73) with the total reactivity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide toward the hydroxyl radical (OH) in urban areas. Model simulation revealed that the main function of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the rural sites where isoprene accounted for >85% of OH reactivity of VOCs was to facilitate the radical cycling. With NOx reduction from 0 to 90%, the self-reactions between peroxy radicals (Self-Rxns), a proven pathway for secondary organic aerosol formation, were intensified by up to 23-fold in a NOx-rich environment. In contrast, reducing VOCs could weaken the Self-Rxns while reducing O3 production rate and atmospheric oxidation capacity. This study observes and simulates O3 chemistry based on extensive measurements in typical Chinese cities, highlighting the necessity of reducing VOCs for co-benefit of O3 and PM2.5.
