Abstract:Studies of microplastics (MPs) in remote, trans-boundary and alpine rivers are currently lacking. To understand the sinks and transport mechanisms of MPs, this study investigated the distributions and sources of MPs in the surface waters and sediments of five tributaries of the Koshi River (KR), a typical alpine river in the Himalayas between China and Nepal. Mean abundances of MPs in water and sediment were 202 ± 100 items/m3 and 58 ± 27 items/kg, dry weight, respectively. The upstream tributary, Pum Qu in China, had the smallest abundance of MPs, while the middle tributary, Sun Koshi in Nepal, had the greatest abundance. Compared to international values in rivers, contamination of the KR with MPs was low to moderate. Fibers represented 98% of all MP particles observed, which consisted of polyethylene, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyamide, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Blue and black MPs were prevalent, and small MPs (<1 mm) accounted for approximately 60% of all MPs. Atmospheric transmission and deposition were considered to be the principal sources of MPs in the upstream tributary. The results imply that point sources associated with mostly untreated sewage effluents and solid wastes from households, major settlements, towns, and cities were most important sources of MPs in the KR. Non-point sources from agricultural runoff and atmospheric transport and deposition in the middle stream tributaries also contribute a part of microplastics, while the least amount was from fishing in the downstream tributary. Urbanization, agriculture, traffic, and tourism contributed to pollution in the KR by MPs. Equations to predict abundances of MPs based on river altitudes revealed that different trends were affected by both natural and human factors within the KR basin. This study presents new insights into the magnitude of MP pollution of a remote alpine river and provides valuable data for developing MP monitoring and mitigation strategies in similar environments worldwide.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive in the environment and have posed growing threat to ecosystems and human health. This study investigated MP abundances in surface water (fresh and salt lakes, urban and rural rivers, etc.) from 28 stations in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. MPs were detected in 25 out of 28 water samples with relatively low abundance (average 584.82 particles m-3). Fibers were the most frequently observed shape, particle sizes mostly ranged from 100 to 500 µm, and the greatest number of MPs was polypropylene. Source analysis identified the major sources of domestic wastewater and tourism in some areas. The concentration and proportion of small MPs (20-100 µm) in salty water were apparently greater than that in fresh water, indicating Salt intrusion accelerated MPs fragmentation. As the study area is the origin of the Yangtze River, we further compared the MP distribution throughout the watershed. Nearly two orders of magnitude in MP concentrations were increased associated with urban agglomeration in the middle and downstream areas, but the highest level was marked around the Yichang City (location of the Three Gorges Reservoir) due to interception associated with sedimentation and precipitation. This study provides data and theoretical bases for analyzing MPs migration and degradation processes in high altitudes.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in the Yangtze River have been drawn increasing attention recently with most merely concentrating on the plain area. This research focuses on the source area of the Yangtze River on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), revealing the occurrence, drivers, sources, and exposure risks of riverine MPs in the Jinsha River (JSR) basin. The results showed that average MP abundances determined were higher in the tributaries than in the of mainstreams. According to the correlation analysis, MP abundance was consistently negatively related to pH and altitude both in water and sediment. However, MPs in two media showed a contrary relationship with river width, which could be explained by the special terrain of plateau rivers and hydrological conditions. After the tributary river flow into the mainstream, the concentration of MPs in the mainstream near the tributary side were significantly lower than that before confluence temporarily. Based on the conditional fragmentation-based model, the cumulative λ value of fibers in surface water along the river divided the JSR into three stages (upstream, midstream, and downstream). Under certain assumptions, the proportions of MPs sourced from three stages were eventually revealed, respectively. This is conducive to better understanding the plateau environmental impacts of MP distribution in the large river.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the environment and have been drawing increasing attention; however, MPs’ occurrence and behavior in remote areas are not well understood. In this study, we quantified and characterized MPs from surface waters and sediments in a remote area, namely the Tibetan Plateau, China. The samples were collected from the Lhasa River and the lower reaches of the Brahmaputra River to better understand MPs’ sources to rivers of the Tibetan Plateau. MPs’ concentrations in water and sediment were 735 items/m3 and 51 items/kg, respectively, and the dominating MPs observed were fibers with size ranging from 100 to 500 μm. MP abundance increased nearly two-fold from upstream to downstream in the Brahmaputra River, associated with the inputs from downstream human activities and the inflows of tributaries (especially the Lhasa River). This study provides important bases for analyzing MPs migration processes in the plateau region.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are among the most widespread anthropogenic pollutants of natural environments, while limited research has focused on the fate of MPs in soils along the Plateau rivers. In this study, we investigated MPs in soils along the source areas of the Yangtze River on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The results showed mean MP abundance values of (89.4 ± 51.0) and (64.4 ± 24.5) items/kg of dry soils around the tributary and mainstream areas, respectively. Film, transparent colors, and polyethylene were common shape, color, and compositions, respectively. The correlation analysis and PCA revealed that MP abundance was related to soil heavy metals (Cr and Ni) and nutrients (TOC and TP) (p < 0.05). Structural equation modeling also revealed that population density was the dominant driving factor contributing to MPs, with a total effect coefficient of 0.45. In addition, the conditional fragmentation model further distinguished the differences in MP sources from upstream to downstream along the Jinsha River. The significant sources of MPs in the bare land and grasslands from the upper reaches of the Jinsha River included traffic, tourism, and atmospheric transport. In contrast, MP transport during farming activities mainly contributed to MPs in the agricultural soil in the lower reaches.

Abstract:Microplastics (MP) pollution is an emerging threat to life and the environment. These particles are not restricted to human-inhabited lands but also found in different mountains and glaciers where the human population is relatively low. These MPs make their way to the river ecosystem from glaciers, rains, and municipal and industrial effluents. The current study was designed to highlight MPs’ pollution in water, sediments, and fishes of the Swat River: originating from the Hindu Kush Mountain Range. These samples were collected from eight different sites across the river. An average concentration of MPs detected in water samples (305.79 ± 289.66 MPs/m3), fish (12.54 ± 8.02 MPs/individual), and sediments (588.29 ± 253.95 MPs/kg). The highest concentration was observed among water samples at Mingora city and the lowest at the confluence point of the rivers near Charsadda being 753.71 ± 330.08 MPs/m3 and 57.64 ± 31.98 MPs/m3, respectively. MP concentrations in the sediment samples were also the highest at Mingora city (834.0 ± 367.21 MPs/kg), and lowest at Chakdara (215.0 ± 20.0 MPs/kg). Among the fish samples, Schizothorax plagiostomus contained the highest while Wallago attu contained the lowest MP concentrations corresponding to 17.08 ± 8.27 MPs/individual and 5.0 ± 2.36 MPs/individual, respectively. Fibers were the most prevalent MPs in all the matrices representing 80%, 92%, and 85% of the total MP count in water, sediments, and fish samples. These findings highlighted that freshwater ecosystem are not free from MPs and are as much vulnerable to anthropogenic activities as marine ecosystem. Therefore, need attention not less than marine ecosystem awareness, education, ecotourism, sustainable reduction in plastic use, and strict rules and regulations could be helpful to prevent the anthropogenic menace.

Abstract:The effect of phenformin on the induction of plasma triglyceride by high-carbohydrate feeding was studied in ten subjects (nine normals and one Type II, hyperlipoproteinemia). Each study was divided into four periods. During periods I and III, each subject received an American Diabetes Association diet calculated to maintain body weight and in periods II and IV a high-carbohydrate diet (85 per cent of the calories derived from carbohydrate) which was isocaloric with the control diet. Phenformin, 50 mg. twice daily, was administered in either period II or IV in association with the high-carbohydrate diet. There was no change in weight during the study. The plasma triglyceride increase (ΔTG) during the high-carbohydrate diet alone was 103 mg. per cent as compared with a ΔTG of 26 mg. per cent during the high carbohydrate-phenformin period, a highly significant difference (p < 0.005). Insulin secretion and glucose tolerance during each period was determined by the sum of the increments above base baseline of plasma insulin and glucose concentrations during a five-hour oral glucose tolerance test. No significant differences in glucose tolerance or in insulin secretion occurred during any of the periods despite the alterations produced by the high-carbohydrate diet and phenformin in plasma triglyceride concentrations. A slight correlation could be demonstrated between the insulin response to a glucose load while on the control diet and the magnitude of the triglyceride response on the high-carbohydrate diet. The data indicate that (1) phenformin inhibits the induction of plasma triglyceride produced by carbohydrate loading, (2) there was no correlation between the changes in plasma triglyceride concentrations, glucose tolerance or insulin responsiveness during the experimental periods and (3) the magnitude of the increase in plasma triglyceride concentration may be related to the insulin response to a glucose load during the control period.
New insights into the distribution, potential source and risk of microplastics in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) as emerging contaminants have become a major global concern, however, the distribution and origin of MPs in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and their impacts on ecosystem are poorly known. Hence, we systematically evaluated the profile of MPs on the representative metropolitan locations of Lhasa and Huangshui Rivers and the scenic sites of Namco and Qinghai Lake. The average abundance of MPs in the water samples was 7020 items/m 3 , which was 34 and 52 times higher than those for the sediment (206.7 items/m 3 ) and soil samples (134.7 items/m 3 ), respectively. Huangshui River had the highest levels, followed by Qinghai Lake, Lhasa River and Namco. Human activities rather than altitude and salinity impacted the distribution of MPs in those areas. Besides the consumption of plastic products by locals and tourists, laundry wastewater and exogenous tributary inputs, the unique prayer flag culture also contributed to the MP emission in QTPs. Notably, the stability and fragment of MPs were crucial for their fate. Multiple assessment models were employed to evaluate the risk of MPs. PERI model took MP concentration, background value and toxicity into account, comprehensively describing the risk differences of each site. The large PVC proportion in Qinghai Lake posed the highest risk. Furthermore, concerns should be raised about PVC, PE and PET in Lhasa and Huangshui Rivers, and PC in Namco. Risk quotient suggested that aged MPs in sediments slowly released biotoxic DEHP and should be cleaned up promptly. The findings offer baseline data of MPs in QTP and ecological risks, providing important support for the prioritization of future control measures.

Abstract:The Yangtze River is an important global channel for plastics and microplastics (MPs) to enter the sea. However, the existing research on MPs in the Yangtze River has primarily focused on the mainstream region, without regarding the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risks associated with tributaries, as well as their relationship with the mainstream. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a large-scale catchment-wide investigation of the surface water in the Yangtze River, encompassing MPs (48 µm-5 mm) of the mainstream and 15 important tributaries. Tributaries and upstream regions exhibited relatively higher levels of MPs compared with the mainstream and different sections of the river. The distribution of MPs is primarily influenced by the emission of arable land and the pH of water. Notably, the upstream tributary areas demonstrated the highest ecological risks associated with MPs. Further analysis highlighted that the tributaries accounted for a contribution ranging from 16% to 67% in quantity and from 14% to 90% in mass of the microplastics observed in the mainstream. Our results suggest that the pollution of tributaries and their associated ecological risk migration must be effectively regulated.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and have received widespread attention worldwide as emerging pollutants. Urbanization and anthropogenic activities are the main sources of MPs in rivers; however, the MPs in plateau rivers with less human activities are not well understood. In this study, the pollution of MPs in the surface water and shore sediment of the Lhasa River from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was investigated, and a risk assessment was conducted. The abundance of MPs in the surface water and shore sediment of Lhasa River were 0.63 n/L and 0.37 n/g, respectively. MPs in surface water were mainly dominated by films (43.23%) and fibers (31.12%) in shape, transparent (54.25%) in color, and 0–0.5 mm (75.83%) in size, while MPs in the shore sediment were mainly fibers (43.69%) and fragments (36.53%), transparent (71.91%), and 0–0.5 mm (60.18%). PP and PE were the predominant polymer types, accounting for 44.55% and 30.79% respectively in the surface water and 32.51% and 36.01% respectively in the shore sediment. More notably, the polymer pollution index ( H ) of MPs in the Lhasa River was at hazard level III due to the high risk caused by PVC, but the pollution load index ( PLI ) was low at hazard level I. This study reveals that the remote river in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are polluted by MPs, and their potential risks to the vulnerable ecosystem deserve attention.

Abstract:Peroxisomes are ubiquitous eukaryotic organelles housing diverse enzymatic reactions, including several that produce toxic reactive oxygen species. Although understanding of the mechanisms whereby enzymes enter peroxisomes with the help of peroxin (PEX) proteins is increasing, mechanisms by which damaged or obsolete peroxisomal proteins are degraded are not understood. We have exploited unique aspects of plant development to characterize peroxisome-associated protein degradation (PexAD) in Arabidopsis. Oilseed seedlings undergo a developmentally regulated remodeling of peroxisomal matrix protein composition in which the glyoxylate cycle enzymes isocitrate lyase (ICL) and malate synthase (MLS) are replaced by photorespiration enzymes. We found that mutations expected to increase or decrease peroxisomal H2O2 levels accelerated or delayed ICL and MLS disappearance, respectively, suggesting that oxidative damage promotes peroxisomal protein degradation. ICL, MLS, and the β-oxidation enzyme thiolase were stabilized in the pex4–1 pex22–1 double mutant, which is defective in a peroxisome-associated ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme and its membrane tether. Moreover, the stabilized ICL, thiolase, and an ICL-GFP reporter remained peroxisome associated in pex4–1 pex22–1. ICL also was stabilized and peroxisome associated in pex6–1, a mutant defective in a peroxisome-tethered ATPase. ICL and thiolase were mislocalized to the cytosol but only ICL was stabilized in pex5–10, a mutant defective in a matrix protein import receptor, suggesting that peroxisome entry is necessary for degradation of certain matrix proteins. Together, our data reveal new roles for PEX4, PEX5, PEX6, and PEX22 in PexAD of damaged or obsolete matrix proteins in addition to their canonical roles in peroxisome biogenesis.
Microplastics contamination in groundwater of a drinking-water source area, northern China

Abstract:Although the contamination of microplastics (MPs) in groundwater has been anticipated, their occurrence, distribution, and composition require further understanding. In this study, the occurrence and distributions of MPs were investigated in shallow groundwater from an important water source district in Tianjin city of northern China. The abundance, the physical morphology, the chemical composition, and the potential correlations of the determined MPs with human activities were thoroughly characterized. MPs were determined from all ten sampling sites with the abundance ranged between 17.0 ± 2.16 to 44.0 ± 1.63 n/L, revealing the ubiquitous existed MPs contamination. Based on the physical categorization, fiber (44.74%) was the most abundant shape, while blue (31.02%) and transparent (26.09%) were the most prevalent colors. The dominant size of MPs was smaller than 200 μm which accounted for 73.10%. A total of seven types of MPs were determined with polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polystyrene as the main types, of which, polypropylene showed strong positive correlations with polystyrene, indicating the possible similar sources of them. Besides, the determined MPs in groundwater were greater in areas with the high population density and strong population activity, indicating their high correlation with human activity. The study highlighted the presence of MPs in groundwater of drinking water source in northern China and provided useful information for evaluating the potential ecological effects on water quality safety and human health brought by MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pervade the environment and increasingly threaten both natural ecosystems and human health. In this study, we investigated MP particle concentrations in sediment samples collected from 54 sites along the banks of the Yangtze River and its major tributaries and on lakeshores. The main polymer types found in the samples were polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE). MP particle abundance in the various types of locations was 35–51,968 particles/kg dry weight (d.w.) on the banks of the main river, 52–1463 particles/kg (d.w.) on the banks of tributaries and 2574–23,685 particles/kg (d.w.) on lakeshores. Correlation between MP abundance and mean annual runoff of each upstream tributary was significant, which suggests that increased runoff brings more microplastic waste to streambank sediments. The most common shape of MP particles in all upstream samples was flake, and in downstream samples it was foam. Small microplastic particles (< 0.50 mm) were predominant at all sites in this study, and the minimum particle size in samples from the Yangtze river banks was 0.065 mm. Average abundance of MP particles on the shores of the source lake was 9069 particles/kg around the inlet but only 866 particles/kg around the outlet; the difference was due to interception associated with sedimentation and precipitation in the lake. Our study represents the large-scale study of MPs contamination in sediment along the Yangtze River and provides important data regarding the accumulation and distribution of MPs in shoreline sediments of the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, main tributaries and lakes in China.

Abstract:Reservoirs are regarded as potential collection sites for microplastics (MPs), and ample water resources in plateau regions provide favorable natural conditions for hydroelectric power generation. However, research on the impact of cascade reservoir construction in the plateau region on the fate of MPs within the watershed is limited. In this study, the Yalong River, an alpine canyon river in the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, was selected as the research area. This study explored the distribution of MPs at various depths in water, sediment, and riverbank soil as well as the formation of "MP communities" within the river-cascade reservoir system. Furthermore, the effects of dam construction on MPs' migration in different environments were analyzed. The results revealed that the abundance of MPs in the water and sediment within the cascade reservoir area (CRA) was significantly higher than that in the river area (RA) ( P < 0.001). Additionally, the trend of increasing MPs in water with decreasing altitude was notably slower in CRA. Regarding shape, the proportion of fibers in the water within the CRA was significantly lower than that in the RA, with a smaller vertical migration rate in the water than in the sediment. The proportion of MPs < 500 μm in the water within the CRA was significantly higher than that in the RA. High-density MPs were notably deposited in the reservoir sediments. The analysis of the MP communities revealed that the construction of cascade dams led to relative geographical isolation between different sampling sites, reducing the similarity of MP communities in the CRA. This study established a theoretical foundation for understanding the impact of cascade dam construction on the fate characteristics of MPs and their potential risks in plateau areas.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are widely detected in urban drinking water systems. However, the presence and characteristics of MPs in mountainous drinking water systems with independent and simple filtration facilities have been overlooked. In this study, we revealed the ubiquity of MPs and demonstrated that their concentrations increased along with the pipeline length in Bainitan Village, Tiantai County, China. The simple filtration facility in this village did not effectively remove most MPs. Polyethylene, polyurethane, and polyethylene terephthalate were the dominant polymers in water samples (72.32% in total), while polyvinylchloride, polyurethane, and polyethylene were the most prevalent in the sediment (74.00% in total) of the reservoir. Long fragments were the predominant shape of MPs in all samples, with the majority being smaller than 100 μm. The estimated daily intake of MPs through drinking water ingestion was highest in infants (2.14–31.26 MPs/kg bw/day), compared to children (1.41–20.67 MPs/kg bw/day) and adults (1.05–15.35 MPs/kg bw/day), highlighting their increased vulnerability. This emphasizes the need for advanced water treatment systems in mountainous regions. It also underscores the necessity for government attention to improve water safety in remote areas. Our research will contribute valuable baseline data for further research on MP exposure, particularly in mountainous communities.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous plastic entities with sizes <5 mm, resistant to degradation and conventional removal processes, and exhibit adverse ecological and human health impacts. The last decade is well-capitalized to explore the occurrence, transportation, sources, and impacts of MPs in the aquatic environment; however, little is known about MPs contamination in wetland systems. Here, we investigated the pollution level of MPs in the surface freshwater and sediment samples collected from the Xijin Wetland Park, which is the largest wetland park in South China, located in Hengxian County, Nanning City, Guangxi Province. Our results showed that the MPs content was ranged from 150 to 1067 n/m3and 4 to 148 n/kg dry weight (dw) in the surface water and sediment samples in the Xijin Wetland Park, respectively. The compositional profiling of MPs revealed 'fiber' as the most abundant shape and '< 0.05 mm' as the most copious particle size among both water and sediment samples. 'blue' was the most frequent color in water while sediment samples was'white', The attenuated total reflectance-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was employed to analyze the polymer composition of MPs and results showed that rayon (14.55%), followed by polyester (9.09%) and polyethylene (8.18%) as the most frequently detects MPs polymers in the Wetland Park. In summary, this study not only provides the baseline data regarding MPs' pollution and associated risk but also gives guidelines to control the plastic pollution in the Xijin Wetland Park.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial aquatic ecosystems have received increasing attention. However, its footprints in reservoirs are poorly documented compared to those in rivers and lakes, especially for small-sized microplastics (<300 μm, SMPs). This study investigated the whole size spectrum of MPs contamination, classified by shape and polymer type, in surface waters and sediments at the Jiayan reservoir, one of the cascade reservoirs in the Upper Yangtze River in western China. High concentrations of MPs were detected in all surface water and sediment samples. The MPs abundances ranged from 1.10 × 104 to 6.17 × 104 items/m3 (average 2.75 × 104 ± 2.33 × 104 items/m3) in the surface water and 2.60 × 103 to 1.57 × 104 items/kg (average 6.90 × 103 ± 5.96 × 103 items/kg) in the sediment. The SMPs accounted for 80% of the total MPs particles, and were dominated by polyethylene (PE) fragment. Small-sized PE is the main contributor to the high abundance of MPs in the Jiayan reservoir. Neglecting SMPs not only leads to an underestimation of the degree of risk, but also causes misjudgment of the major morphology, components, and sources. The conditional fragmentation model analysis showed the stability of MPs increased from the fibers to fragments and fibers tend to disintegrate into smaller particles. Agricultural activities and atmospheric deposition were the main sources of MPs in the Jiayan reservoir. This study indicates that the reservoirs are presumably hotspots for MPs accumulation, and the fate of SMPs in the cascade reservoirs deserves more attention for further studies.
