Abstract:Hydrogel actuators with anisotropic microstructure, photothermal shape‐change, and photocatalytic activity are prepared from composites of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) and Au/g‐C3N4 nanoparticles. A variety of light‐fueled controllable shape‐change is elicited, applicable to soft robotics. The photothermal deformation of hydrogel constructs is utilized to maximize their energy harvesting capability and photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Hydrogel actuators have shown great promise in underwater robotic applications as they can generate controllable shape transformations upon stimulation due to their ability to absorb and release water reversibly. Herein, a photoresponsive anisotropic hydrogel actuator is developed from poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and gold‐decorated carbon nitride (Au/g‐C3N4) nanoparticles. Carbon nitride nanoparticles endow hydrogel actuators with photocatalytic properties, while their reorientation and mobility driven by the electrical field provide anisotropic properties to the surrounding network. A variety of light‐fueled soft robotic functionalities including controllable and programmable shape‐change, gripping, and locomotion is elicited. A responsive flower‐like photocatalytic reactor is also fabricated, for water splitting, which maximizes its energy‐harvesting efficiency, that is, hydrogen generation rate of 1061.82 μmol g−1 h−1, and the apparent quantum yield of 8.55% at 400 nm, by facing its light‐receiving area adaptively towards the light. The synergy between photoactive and photocatalytic properties of this hydrogel portrays a new perspective for the design of underwater robotic and photocatalytic devices.

Abstract:The development of soft hydrogel actuators with outstanding mechanical properties, fast actuation speed, and available quantification of self-sensing actuation remains a challenging endeavor. In this work, dopamine-decorated polypyrrole nanofibers (DAPPy) were introduced into the polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)-crosslinked poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) network to generate a stretchable, NIR-responsive, and strain sensitive DAPPy/PNIPAM hydrogel layer. Besides, this active layer was combined with the passive ligninsulfonate sodium/polyacrylamide (LS/PAAM) to give DAPPy/PNIPAM//LS/PAAM bilayer hydrogel actuator, which exhibits ultrafast thermo-responsive actuation (19°/s) and underwater grasping and lifting performance. Moreover, the DAPPy/PNIPAM layer has excellent electrical conductivity (0.29 S/m) and thermal conversion ability (10.8 °C/min), which enable such a conductive hydrogel to act as a highly sensitive strain and temperature sensor with real-time resistance change in response to tensile strain (gauge factor up to 3.4), applied pressure, temperature, and remote NIR light irradiation. More importantly, the bilayer hydrogel actuator can integrate both actuation and self-sensing functions through the bending angle-surface temperature-relative resistance change relationship of the photothermal process. With excellent mechanical actuation and self-sensing ability, the resulting bilayer hydrogel showed a promising application potential as soft biomimetic actuating materials and soft intelligent actuators.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators have potential applications in many fields because of their multiple responsiveness to environmental stimuli. However, it is still very challenging to design a hydrogel actuator with simple preparation, fast response, and good mechanical properties. In this work, a facile and convenient method to obtain a fast responsive hydrogel actuator has been successfully developed by embedding uniform inorganic particles into Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel network to form an asymmetric structure. By controlling the types and contents of inorganic particles, a wide range of adjustable actuation property can be achieved. At the same time, the introduction of inorganic particles greatly increases the mechanical properties of hydrogels, which is also very important for actuation performance improvement of hydrogel actuators. The optimized hydrogel exhibits relatively fast bending deformation under thermal stimulation (60 °C), with a bending velocity of about 13.0° s −1 within first 10 s and a bending amplitude of about 328.1° within 1 min. The hydrogel can be designed to be temperature-controlled claw actuators with programmable shapes, indicating its application prospects in encapsulating, grasping, and transporting objects in water environment. Graphical We successfully designed and manufactured hybrid hydrogels with an asymmetric structure and improved mechanical property by adding inorganic particles to the PNIPAM hydrogel. The hybrid hydrogel with optimized SiO 2 particles shows superior actuation properties due to bigger different in the swelling rates on both sides of hybrid hydrogels. The flexible and controllable deformation of the hydrogel actuator provides an inspiration for intelligent soft actuator in water environmental applications.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators represent a powerful tool due to their ability to capture, move, and be manipulated, which has applications in diverse fields. The development of hydrogel actuators capable of localized movement, where only a part of the whole system moves, wireless remote control, and flexible shape-changing is critical and challenging to fulfill their potential. Here, photothermal hydrogel actuators are designed and fabricated to accomplish a precise hand-like manipulation of encapsulating and finger-like one-by-one bending by light. A thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) active layer and a non-thermoresponsive poly(acrylamide) passive layer are combined to generate a thermal-expansion coefficient mismatch among the interface and this energy eventually transforms into a bending motion. As an energy transformation agent, the gold nanoparticles doped in the PNIPAm hydrogel absorb the light energy and transform it into thermalenergy effectively as a result of a surface plasmon resonance electron-phonon process and intrinsic interband transitions. The resulting nanocomposite actuators exhibit flexible, reversible motions and local hand-like finger flexion driven by either flood illumination or local irradiation. The developed programmable actuators are expected to be an attractive candidate for the next generation of "smart" soft robots.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel method for crafting hydrogel actuators with anisotropic structures, enhancing adaptability across diverse environments. The thin PNIPAm nanoparticle layer, synthesized via interfacial precipitation polymerization, ensures exceptional structural stability. This versatile approach enables programmable 3D actuation, offering a pathway for advanced hydrogel applications. Hydrogel actuators with anisotropic structures exhibit reversible responsiveness upon the trigger of various external stimuli, rendering them promising for applications in many fields including artificial muscles and soft robotics. However, their effective operation across multiple environments remains a persistent challenge, even for widely studied thermo‐responsive polymers like poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm). Current attempts to address this issue are hindered by complex synthetic procedures or specific substrates. This study introduces a straightforward methodology to grow a thin, dense PNIPAm nanoparticle layer on diverse hydrogel surfaces, creating a highly temperature‐sensitive hydrogel actuator. This actuator demonstrates adaptability across various environments, including water, oil, and open air, owing to its distinct structure facilitating self‐water circulation during actuation. The thin PNIPAm layer consists of interconnected PNIPAm nanoparticles synthesized via in situ interfacial precipitation polymerization, seamlessly bonded to the hydrogel substrate through an interfacial layer containing hybrid hydrogel/PNIPAm nanoparticles. This unique anisotropic structure ensures exceptional structural stability without interfacial delamination, even enduring harsh treatments such as freezing, ultrasonic irradiation, and prolonged water immersion. Remarkably, PNIPAm films on hydrogel surfaces which enable programmable 3D actuation can also be precisely patterned. This synthetic approach opens a novel pathway for fabricating advanced hydrogel actuators with broad‐ranging applications.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based actuators have attracted significant attention and shown promising applications in many fields. However, most hydrogel actuators can only act in aqueous media, which dramatically limits their applications. Hence, the realization of hydrogel actuators that function under non-aqueous conditions still remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the water self-circulation mechanism that contributes to the motion of Mimosa leaves, we herein present a general strategy towards designing hydrogel actuators that can generate motions in water, oil and even in open-air environments. A hydrogel with a reverse thermal responsive bilayer composite structure was prepared, composed of a hydrogel layer derived from a polymer featuring a lower critical solution temperature (LCST layer) and a hydrogel layer derived from a polymer featuring an upper critical solution temperature (UCST layer). Upon heating, water molecules were transferred from the LCST layer to the UCST layer within the bilayer hydrogel, while under cooling the reverse process took place, allowing for an actuation even in non-aqueous environments. This water self-circulation within the bilayer hydrogel enabled a bending of the hydrogel and hence offers a smart strategy yet with a new idea for actuators working inmulti-environments. Such hydrogel actuators may provide new insights for the design and fabrication of intelligent soft materials for bio-inspired applications.

Abstract:Inspired by intelligent biomaterials which often have flexible responsiveness to multiple environmental cues and strengthen their mechanical properties by trainings, emerging soft actuators require programmable manipulation. Currently, the integration of such characteristics as rapid self-strengthening, strain-adaptive stiffening and smart actuation, into a single hydrogel actuator is urgently needed. Here, we report a self-strengthened hydrogel actuator based on the semi-interpenetrating polymer network consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), which can display diverse programmable actuations by responding to temperature/salt stimuli. In the design, the layer of freeze-thawed PNIPAm/PVA (PPGel-F) is assembled with another original PNIPAm/PVA hydrogel layer (PPGel) into one device. By taking advantage of the PVA crystalline nanofibrils in the PPGel-F matrix, the differentiated swelling degree across the bilayer structure gives rise to asymmetric deformations and the resultant shape transformation. Moreover, upon the mechanical training with less than 100 cycles, the anisotropic arrangement of PVA nanofibrils through strong hydrogen bonding interactions can swiftly immobilize the amorphous polymer chains orientation along the tensile direction. This enhances the strain-induced crystallization, thereby generating the rapid self- strengthening behavior. The proposed work provides potential solution for constructing dynamically adaptive hydrogel systems that can mimic biological tissues for more intelligent soft robotics and bionic research.

Abstract:Current hydrogel-based actuators have achieved rapid development due to their excellent performance such as shape-morphing and color-changing for application in fields such as camouflage, biomimetic soft-robotics and so on. However, it is still challenging to fabricate soft robots with the capability of simultaneous changes in shape and fluorescent color at a fast speed when triggered by one single stimulus. Herein, an anisotropic organohydogel actuator made up of rGO-doped hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) network and hydrophobic poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) network is prepared via a two-step interpenetrating method. Bearing fluorescent monomer N-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)acrylamide (ATPE) as well as fluorescent ligand 6-acrylamidopicolinic acid (6APA), the PLMA network shows fluorescent changes in color or brightness depending on the presence or absence of Eu3+ ions in response to heat/NIR. In a word, the proposed organohydrogel actuator, which exhibits simultaneous fluorescence color variation and fast morphing in response to one stimulus, provides insights in designing and fabricating novel soft robots.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive hydrogel actuators have promising applications in various fields. However, the typical hydrogel actuation relies on the swelling and de-swelling process caused by osmotic-pressure changes, which is slow and normally requires the presence of water environment. Herein, we report a light-powered in-air hydrogel actuator with remarkable performances, including ultrafast motion speed (up to 1.6 m/s), rapid response (as fast as 800 ms) and high jumping height (~15 cm). The hydrogel is operated based on a fundamentally different mechanism that harnesses the synergetic interactions between the binary constituent parts, i.e. the elasticity of the poly(sodium acrylate) hydrogel, and the bubble caused by the photothermal effect of the embedded magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The current hydrogel actuator exhibits controlled motion velocity and direction, making it promising for a wide range of mobile robotics, soft robotics, sensors, controlled drug delivery and other miniature device applications.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators with controllable deformation and excellent biocompatibility are widely used in soft robot, valve, drug delivery and lenses. However, the stimulation response performance of existing hydrogel actuators mostly focuses on a single active layer, which greatly affects its driving performance and service life. In this work, we integrate temperature-responsive hydrogel (Poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide), PNIPAM) and pH-responsive hydrogel (polyacrylic acid, PAAc) into one system to fabricate a dual active layer composite hydrogel actuator with high performance. Based on the PAAc hydrogels achieving contract or expand at different pH values, the obtained actuator exhibits admirable bidirectional bending characteristics. In addition, the anisotropic bamboo sheet endows the hydrogel actuator with programmable 3 D complex deformation. Benefitting from the synergy and different responsiveness between the two active layers, the hydrogel actuator not only has multiple response performance, but also greatly improves its deformation degree and response speed. More importantly, these promising properties of the actuator have broad application prospects in the development of pattern design and intelligent switch. This work proposes a promising strategy for the structural design of hydrogel actuators with excellent performance, and encourages more exploration of the application range of the actuator.

Abstract:Intelligent hydrogel materials have significant potential for soft robotic applications due to their sharply and reversibly responding to various external stimuli. However, obtaining a biomimetic hydrogel actuator with integrated self-sensing and self-actuation properties is still a great challenge. Herein, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel is fabricated by incorporating a conductive polymer polyaniline (PANI) into a double network poly( N -isopropylacrylamide- co -acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PNA/PVA) hydrogel. The as-prepared conductive PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel could span a wide range of mechanical properties and phase transition temperatures by simply tuning polymer composition. When combined the active PNA/PVA/PANI layer with a passive polyacrylamide (PAAM) layer, a bilayer hydrogel actuator exhibits superior actuation ability with high bending speeds by the thermal stimulation. In addition, the introduction of PANI component endows the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity up to 3.91 ± 0.15 S/m and ultrahigh-efficiency of photothermal conversion. Consequently, the PNA/PVA/PANI hydrogel not only exhibits piezoresistive strain/pressure sensing in motion recognition and physiological signal monitoring, but also displays a variety of precise and remotely driven photo-responsive locomotion such as contraction, bending, light tracking and weightlifting by locally near-infrared (NIR) illumination. Furthermore, this hydrogel can simultaneously detect these actuation states via real-time resistance change, achieving closed-loop monitoring and sensing feedback. The self-sensing actuation performance has been fully demonstrated by remotely controlling a hydrogel octopus's grasping and object moving activities. The multi-responsiveness and real-time sensory feedback will inspire this material to be applied in novel soft biomimetic actuating materials and systems.

Abstract:Hydrogel actuators belong to a type of smart soft materials which can take place anisotropic thrust and/or displacement under various environmental stimuli including thermal, light, pH, humidity etc. Robust strength and rapid response are of critical importance to high-performance hydrogel actuators. Here we report the syntheses and investigations of mechanical properties for series novel organic-inorganic hydrogels by using vinyl functionalized silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) as the cross-linker. The doped SiNPs significantly enhance the mechanical strength of polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels. Furthermore, the SiNPs composite poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm) hydrogels exhibit rapid response in deswelling and swelling behaviours. The excellent mechanical and responsive properties are attributed to the enhanced rigidity via SiNPs doping into the hydrogel network and the improved water diffusion through mPEG branch chains on the surface of nanoparticles, respectively. As a proof of concept, a bilayer hydrogel actuator is facilely synthesized via an in-situ polymerization process. This composite hydrogel actuator shows extremely fast response rate of directional bending in hot water, about 6 times faster than the control without doping of SiNPs. This work demonstrates that these SiNPs composite hydrogels provide enhanced mechanical and responsive performances and may expand the future applications in smart hydrogel materials.

Abstract:Soft robots made of hydrogels are suited for underwater exploration due to their biocompatibility and compliancy. Yet, reaching high dexterity and actuation force for hydrogel-based actuators is challenging. Meanwhile, real-time proprioception is critical for feedback control. Moreover, sensor integration to mimic living organisms remains problematic. To address these challenges, we introduce a hydrogel actuator driven by hydraulic force with a fast response (time constant 0.83 s). The highly stretchable and conductive hydrogel (1400% strain) is molded into the PneuNet shape, and two of them are further assembled symmetrically to actuate bi-directionally. Then, we demonstrate its bionic application for underwater swimming, showing 2 cm/s (0.19 BL/s) speed. Inspired by biological neuromuscular systems' sensory motion, which unifies the sensing and actuation in a single unit, we explore the hydrogel actuator's self-sensing capacity utilizing strain-induced resistance change. The results show that the soft actuator's proprioception can monitor the undulation in real-time with a sensitivity of 0.2%/degree. Furthermore, we take a finite-element method and first-order differential equations to model the actuator's bending in response to pressure. We show that such a model can precisely predict the robot's bending response over a range of pressures. With the self-sensing actuator and the proposed model, we expect the new approach can lead to future soft robots for underwater exploration with feedback control, and the underlying mechanism of the undulation control might offer significant insights for biomimetic research.

Abstract:Near-infrared light-responsive hydrogels are one of the most important soft biomimetic actuators owing to their accuracy, remote control performance, and permeability. However, the complex deformations and materials of hydrogel actuators are still a serious challenge. Herein, we have developed a novel composite hydrogel actuator by combining natural bamboo sheet and nigrosine/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) composite hydrogel. The high-efficient photothermal conversion of the nigrosine/PNIPAM composite hydrogel sheet generates light-responsive actuation that is remotely controllable. Furthermore, the bamboo sheet with fiber-oriented structure can be cut at different angles, which facilitates programmable 3D complex deformations in the actuator. Accordingly, we have designed a series of biomimetic actuating devices, including simulations of butterfly antenna, Dendrobium , smart switch, and even a multi-step deformational biomimetic claw. In addition, we also explored a biomimetic insect with precisely-controlled fast movements on the water surface based on Marangoni effect. This work provides a simple but general strategy for fabricating biomimetic actuators and will inspire new designs for intelligent soft actuators.

Abstract:Responsive hydrogels based on Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) are known to exhibit distinctive thermosensitive properties. However, isotropic PNIPAM hydrogels with weak mechanical properties and low deformation rates tend to exhibit only regular volume expansion/contraction, which limits them to promising applications such as intelligent actuators. In order to prepare programmable hydrogel actuators with satisfactory mechanical properties and fast deformation capability, a polyvinyl alcohol/PNIPAM (PVA/PNIPAM) bilayer hydrogel with anisotropic structure is proposed by combining preprepared PVA polymer film with outstanding mechanical properties as the passive layer and thermosensitive PNIPAM hydrogel as the active layer, forming a semi-interpenetrating network structure at the interface via the hydrogen-bond interaction between PNIPAM and PVA. The microstructures, mechanical properties and actuation behaviors of bilayer hydrogel were studied by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrograph, mechanical testing machine and actuation test device. Results show that the introduction of PVA can improve the tensile stress of the bilayer hydrogel from 23.6 kPa to 62.6 kPa, and favor the hydrogel actuator excellent actuation preformation with a maximum bending amplitude of 500° and a maximum bending velocity of 13°/s within first 40 s. The bilayer hydrogel is further designed to work as a fluidic system valve that can recognize various temperature solutions and control solution flow rate. This design provides a simple and practical strategy to construct responsive hydrogels with anisotropic structure for further development in the field of intelligent actuators and flexible microfluidic systems.

Abstract:Thermo-responsive hydrogel actuators have attracted tremendous interest due to their promising applications in artiﬁcial muscles, soft robotics, and flexible electronics. However, most of these materials are based on polymers with lower critical solution temperature (LCST), while those from upper critical solution temperature (UCST) are rare. Herein, we report a multiple-responsive UCST hydrogel actuator based on the complex of poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) and poly(acrylamide) (PAAm). By applying a heterogeneous photo-polymerization, a bilayer hydrogel was obtained, including a layer of interpenetrating network (IPN) of PAAm/PAAc and a layer of single network of PAAm. When cooled down below the UCST, the PAAm/PAAc layer contracted due to the hydrogen bonding of the two polymers while the PAAm layer stays in swelling state, driving the hydrogel to curl. By adjusting the composition of the two layers, the amplitude of actuation behavior could be regulated. By creating patterned IPN domains with photo-masks, the hydrogel could deform into complex 2D and 3D shapes. Active motion was realized in both water and oil bath, thanks to the internal water exchange between the two layers. Interestingly, the hydrogel actuator is also responsive to urea and salts (Na2SO4, NaCl, NaSCN), due to that the strength of the hydrogen bonds in the IPN changes with the additives. Overall, the current study realized an anisotropic UCST transition through introducing asymmetrically distributed polymer-polymer hydrogen-bonds, which would inspire new inventions of intelligent materials.

Abstract:Marangoni‐effect‐driven actuators (MDAs) have the advantages of direct light‐to‐work conversion and convenient operation, which makes it widely researched in the cutting‐edge fields including robots, micromachines, and intelligent systems. However, the MDA relies on the surface tension difference and it only works on the 2D liquid–air interface. Besides, the MDAs are normally pure black due to the light‐absorption material limitation. Herein, a transparent light‐driven 3D movable actuator (LTMA) and a 3D manipulation strategy are proposed. The LTMA is composed of photothermal nanoparticles‐doped temperature‐responsive hydrogel, whose surface energy changes as the nanoparticles absorb light energy. The 3D manipulation strategy combines Marangoni effect with photothermal buoyancy flow for realizing complex self‐propellant and floating/sinking motions. The LTMA can perform more advanced tasks such as 3D obstacle avoidance and 3D sampling. Benefiting from the porous structure of hydrogel, LTMA can naturally absorb the chemical molecules for remote sampling and automated drug delivery. The light‐driven, transparent, three‐dimensionally movable, and programmable actuator has promising prospects in the field of micromachines and intelligent systems.

Abstract:In nature, many living creatures coordinate multiple parts of the body like color, shape or posture in response to external stimulus. This inspires scientists to develop fluorescent hydrogels with stimuli-responsive behaviors for the creation of artificial actuators. However, most reported fluorescent hydrogels need more than two kinds of stimuli to achieve abundant macro changes, which is far from the intelligent and cooperative characteristics of living creatures. Here, we construct a smart fluorescent hydrogel by polymerizing sodium 4-styrenesulfonate ( NaSS ), (Z)-N-(4-(1-cyano-2-(4-(diethylamino)phenyl)vinyl)-phenyl)methacrylamide ( NE ) and acrylamide ( AM ). Under acidic conditions, the gel volume decreases due to the polyelectrolyte effect and acid/base responsiveness of benzenesulfonate groups from NaSS . Meanwhile, the protonation process of N, N-diethylaniline group from NE increases the solubility and breaks the intramolecular charge transfer ( ICT ) process. Therefore, a smart fluorescent hydrogel with synergistic shape, color, fluorescence and transparency response behaviors towards a single acid stimulus was successfully constructed. This hydrogel is further made into intelligent actuators with bilayer structures, which provides new insights in the design of biomimetic systems.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive shape-changing hydrogels are attractive candidates for use as underwater soft robots. The bottleneck lies in the low actuation speed inherently limited by the water diffusion between hydrogels and their surrounding environment. In addition, accessing complex motions is restricted by the material fabrication methods. Here we report a hitherto unknown mechanism to achieve high-speed and programmable actuations for a disulfide crosslinked thermally responsive hydrogel. The dynamic photo-activated disulfide bond exchange allows photo-mechanical programming to introduce spatio-selective network anisotropy. This gives rise to an actuation behavior dominated by thermally driven conformation change of the locally oriented polymer chains instead of the common mass-diffusion-based mechanism. With the incorporation of photothermal fillers, light-powered oscillation at frequencies as high as 1.7 Hz is realized. This, coupled with the versatility of the programming, allows access to robots with diverse high-speed motions including continuous swimming, step-wise walking, and rotating.

Abstract:Development of smart soft actuators is highly important for fundamental research and industrial applications, but has proved to be extremely challenging. In this work, we present a facile, one-pot, one-step method to prepare dual-responsive bilayer hydrogels, consisting of a thermos-responsive poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (polyNIPAM) layer and a salt-responsive poly(3-(1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)propane-1-sulfonat) (polyVBIPS) layer. Both polyNIPAM and polyVBIPs layers exhibit a completely opposite swelling/shrinking behavior, where polyNIPAM shrinks (swells) but polyVBIPS swells (shrinks) in salt solution (water) or at high (low) temperatures. By tuning NIPAM:VBIPS ratios, the resulting polyNIPAM/polyVBIPS bilayer hydrogels enable to achieve fast and large-amplitude bidirectional bending in response to temperatures, salt concentrations, and salt types. Such bidirectional bending, bending orientation and degree can be reversibly, repeatedly, and precisely controlled by salt- or temperature-induced cooperative, swelling-shrinking properties from both layers. Based on their fast, reversible, bidirectional bending behavior, we further design two conceptual hybrid hydrogel actuators, serving as a six-arm gripper to capture, transport, and release an object and an electrical circuit switch to turn on-and-off a lamp. Different from the conventional two or multi-step methods for preparation of bilayer hydrogels, our simple, one-pot, one-step method and a new bilayer hydrogel system provide an innovative concept to explore new hydrogel-based actuators through combining different responsive materials that allow to program different stimulus for soft and intelligent materials applications.
