Abstract:Background: Parents of children with a chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a crucial role in the management of their child's disease. The burden on parents is high: they are often exhausted, depressed and experience high levels of stress and a low quality of life, which could have a negative impact on their child's health outcomes. Support aiming at preventing and reducing parental stress is essential. Therefore, it is necessary to have insight in the problems and support needs among these parents. Objective: Our aim is to describe parents' support needs regarding the problems they experience in having a child with CKD. Methods: Five focus group interviews were conducted with parents of children: (i) with hereditary kidney disease, (ii) with nephrotic syndrome, (iii) with chronic kidney failure, (iv) using dialysis and (v) after renal transplantation. The children were treated at a paediatric nephrology unit in one university hospital in the Netherlands. The data were thematically analysed. Results: Twenty-one parents participated in the focus groups. Parents need more information about their child's CKD and treatment options, and managing their own hobbies and work. Furthermore, parents need emotional support from their partner, family, friends, peers and healthcare professionals to help them cope with the disease of their child. Additionally, parents need practical support to hand over their care and support in transport, financial management and regarding their child at school. Conclusion: Needs regarding balancing their personal life are seldom prioritized by parents as the child's needs are considered more important. Therefore, it is important that healthcare professionals should not only attend to the abilities of parents concerning their child's disease management, but also focus on the parents' abilities in balancing their responsibilities as a caregiver with their own personal life.
Depressive disorders in children with chronic kidney disease treated conservatively

Abstract:Background: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) experience a lot of mental and emotional stress, which can lead to the development of depressive disorders. The prevalence of depressive disorders in CKD children is estimated to be between 7% and 35%. Objectives: The aim of our study was to analyze the prevalence and characteristics of depression and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with CKD treated conservatively. Material and methods: The cross-sectional, multicenter study was conducted in 73 CKD children aged 8-18 and in 92 of their parents. To assess the mental wellbeing of CKD children, Kovacs's Children's Depression Inventory 2 (CDI2) was used as CDI2: Self-Report and CDI2: Parent Form. Results: The majority of CKD children acquired medium scores in CDI2, 11% of participants reported symptoms suggesting depressive disorder, and among them 8.2% met the criteria for depression. A significant relationship was found between age and interpersonal problems, age at CKD diagnosis, and total score and ineffectiveness, CKD duration and total score/emotional problems. Depressive symptoms were associated with the stage of CKD, and they differed significantly between stages III and IV. We noticed the child-parent disagreement on reported depressive symptoms. Parents perceive their children's mental state as worse than the children themselves. Conclusions: There is a problem of depression in children with CKD treated conservatively. Variables associated with depressive symptoms in CKD children treated conservatively require further study. Key factors predisposing to the development of depression seem to be age at the time of diagnosis, disease duration, and progression of CKD from stage III to IV. Disparities between depressive symptoms self-reported by CKD children and their parents' assessment require further analysis. However, these disparaties indicate that the final diagnosis of the occurrence of depressive disorders should be based on a multidimensional assessment of the patient's situation.

Abstract:The mental health of youth with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been increasingly recognized as an area of clinical need. The development of mental health concerns is influenced by a range of physiological, psychological, and environmental factors. Some of these factors are common across child development, but some are more unique to youth with CKD. Mental health concerns are associated with increased risk for a range of poor medical outcomes (e.g., adherence, risk of transplant rejection) and quality of life concerns. In this educational review, we discuss the current evidence base regarding the development of mental health concerns in youth with CKD. The review covers multiple domains including mood and anxiety disorders, traumatic stress, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Estimated prevalence and hypothesized risk factors are outlined, and the potential impact of mental health on medical care and functional outcomes are reviewed. Finally, we introduce options for intervention to support positive mental health and offer recommendations for building access to mental health care and improving the mental health education/training of medical professionals.Graphical abstract“A higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available as Supplementary information”

Causal Effects of Positive Affect, Life Satisfaction, Depressive Symptoms, and Neuroticism on Kidney Function: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Abstract:Background: Further investigation of the causal effects of psychologic wellbeing on kidney function is warranted. Methods: In this Mendelian randomization (MR) study, genetic instruments for positive affect, life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and neuroticism were introduced from a previous genome-wide association study meta-analysis of European individuals. Summary-level MR was performed using the CKDGen data of European ancestry (n=567,460), and additional allele score-based MR was performed in the individual-level data of White British UK Biobank participants (n=321,024). Results: In summary-level MR with the CKDGen data, depressive symptoms were a significant causative factor for kidney function impairment (CKD OR, 1.45; 95% confidence interval, 1.07 to 1.96; eGFR change [%] beta -2.18; 95% confidence interval, -3.61 to -0.72) and pleiotropy-robust sensitivity analysis results supported the causal estimates. A genetic predisposition for positive affect was significantly associated with better kidney function (CKD OR, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.52 to 0.91), eGFR change [%] beta 1.50; 95% confidence interval, 0.09 to 2.93) and sensitivity MR analysis results supported the finding for CKD outcome, but was nonsignificant for eGFR. Life satisfaction and neuroticism exposures showed nonsignificant causal estimates. In the UK Biobank with covariate-adjusted allele score MR analysis, allele scores for positive affect and life satisfaction were causally associated with reduced risk of CKD and higher eGFR. In contrast, neuroticism allele score was associated with increased risk of CKD and lower eGFR, and depressive symptoms allele score was associated with lower eGFR, but showed nonsignificant association with CKD. Conclusions: Health care providers in the nephrology field should be aware of the causal linkage between psychologic wellbeing and kidney function.
Anxiety, depression, resilience and quality of life in children and adolescents with pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease

Abstract:BackgroundChronic kidney disease (CKD) is a risk factor for psychosocial impairment and psychiatric symptoms. Children and adolescents on dialysis frequently have compromised daily life activities and a worse quality of life (QoL) compared with healthy peers. However, few studies have investigated these aspects of CKD in pediatric pre-dialysis CKD patients. Therefore, we have analyzed resilience, QoL and anxiety and depressive symptoms in children and adolescents with pre-dialysis CKD and compared these to the values of healthy controls.MethodsDemographic and clinical data were collected from 28 children and adolescents with pre-dialysis CKD and 28 healthy sex- and age-matched controls. Psychological assessment of the participants was performed using the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale, Pediatric Quality of Life (QoL) Inventory 4.0 , Child Depression Inventory and Self-report for Childhood Anxiety Related Disorders scales.ResultsOf the 56 children enrolled in our study, the CKD patients were referred to mental health professionals more frequently than the controls. Patients exhibited higher scores for separation anxiety and a higher frequency of clinically significant depressive symptoms. They also had lower overall QoL scores, as well as poorer scores for the psychological, educational and psychosocial subdomains of QoL instruments. There was a negative correlation between anxiety and depressive symptoms and all domains of QoL. Resilience was similar in both groups, but lower in patients with significant depressive symptoms. No significant association was found between clinical or laboratory findings and psychological variables in CKD patients.ConclusionAlthough patients and controls exhibited similar scores of resilience, CKD negatively impacted the QoL of pediatric patients, contributing to a higher frequency of depression and separation anxiety.

Abstract:Background: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) generally have worse educational and psychosocial outcomes compared with their healthy peers. This can impair their ability to manage their treatment, which in turn can have long-term health consequences through to adulthood. We attempted to capture the experiences of children with CKD and to describe the perspectives of their parents and caregivers on access to educational and psychosocial support. Methods: Children with CKD (n = 34) and their caregivers (n = 62) were sampled via focus groups from pediatric hospitals in Australia, Canada, and the USA. Sixteen focus groups were convened and the transcripts were analyzed thematically. Results: We identified four themes: disruption to self-esteem and identity (emotional turmoil of adolescence, wrestling with the sick self, powerlessness to alleviate child's suffering, balancing normality and protection); disadvantaged by lack of empathy and acceptance (alienated by ignorance, bearing the burden alone); a hidden and inaccessible support system (excluded from formal psychological support, falling behind due to being denied special considerations); and building resilience (finding partners in the journey, moving towards acceptance of the illness, re-establishing childhood). Conclusions: Children with CKD and their caregivers encountered many barriers in accessing psychosocial and educational support and felt extremely disempowered and isolated as a consequence. Improved availability and access to psychosocial and educational interventions are needed to improve the wellbeing and educational advancement of children with CKD. Abstract:Endovascular exclusion of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is an investigational technique under scrutiny around the world. The tube and bifurcated versions of the Endovascular Grafting System (EGS) developed by Endovascular Technologies are the subjects of FDA-approved multicenter trials in the United States (US). Similar studies are under way in Europe, Australia, and the United Kingdom. This review details the implantation techniques for the EGS device and summarizes the important clinical findings published through 1996. Although the EGS was voluntarily removed from the US trial when fractures were discovered in the graft attachment system, subsequent experience with the re-engineered EGS has been positive. Successfully implanted EGS tube grafts have been associated with aneurysm shrinkage after 1 year in AAAs initially excluded or with sealed endoleaks. Aneurysm enlargement has been seen in EGS tube grafts with persistent endoleak.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo determine the association of socioeconomic disadvantage and parent-rated health in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD).MethodsA total of 377 children (aged 6–18 years) with CKD stages I–V (n = 199), on dialysis (n = 43), or with a kidney transplant (n = 135) were recruited from 2012 to 2016 in Australia and New Zealand. Associations of five socioeconomic status (SES) components and the global SES index with parent-rated health of the child were examined using adjusted logistic regression.ResultsThe median age of participants was 12.6 years (interquartile range (IQR) 8.9–15.5). In the entire cohort, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for poor parent-rated health were 1.85 (1.13–3.03) for lower household income, 1.78 (1.08–2.96) for families that did not own their own home, 2.50 (1.50–4.16) for caregivers who rated their financial status as poor, 0.84 (0.51–1.38) for lower educational attainment, and 1.68 (1.04–2.72) for children whose primary caregivers were unemployed. With reference to the highest global SES index quartile, adjusted ORs for poor parent-rated health in descending order were 1.49 (0.69–3.21), 2.11 (1.06–4.20), and 2.20 (1.09–4.46), respectively. The association between low SES and poor parent-rated health was modified by CKD stage, where lower global SES index was independently associated with poor parent-rated health in children with CKD stages I–V, but not children on dialysis or with kidney transplants (p = 0.04).ConclusionsLow SES is associated with poor parent-rated health in children with CKD stages I–V, but not children on dialysis and with kidney transplants.

Abstract:Background There is great mental stress due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, there are no detailed psychological studies of the children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their guardians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective This study explores the psychological pressure on children with CKD and their guardians. Methods An online survey was conducted at 20 of the largest pediatric nephropathy departments in China, including the Rutter Parent Questionnaire, Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). Overall, 885 children (589 children with CKD associated with 296 children of the control group) completed the survey together with their guardians. Results There was no statistical difference between CKD children and control children regarding their Rutter behavior scores and abnormal behaviors. Nevertheless, the abnormal behavior of children might aggravate the anxiety and depression of guardians in both CKD and control groups ( p < 0.05). We confirmed that the anxiety and depression of guardians in the CKD group were both significantly higher than those in the control group ( p < 0.05). The guardians in the CKD group with lower annual income were more likely to experience anxiety ( p < 0.05). Furthermore, the guardians whose children were older than 11 years old might be more anxious than those who were 6–11 years old. Besides, the guardians in the CKD group who watched the news for 30–60 min daily were less likely to have depression than those who watched < 10 min ( p < 0.05). The subgroup results showed that the gender, the time of watching the news, the annual income of guardians, and children's age might be the most critical factors influencing guardians' psychological burden. Conclusion The guardians in the CKD group have more severe anxiety and depression during the pandemic. The children's abnormal behavior, adolescents' pressure, low household income, and the panic about the pandemic may be the main reasons for the anxiety and depression of guardians.

Depression and its associated factors in pediatric chronic kidney disease

Abstract:Background: Few studies on the occurrence of depression in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been conducted and none have identified associated clinical and demographic factors. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in which we administered the Child Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2) to 44 patients aged 9-18 years with CKD stages III-V. Criteria for depression were CDI-2 scores of ≥65 or an established diagnosis of depression recorded in the medical chart. Relative risks (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to determine associations between patient characteristics and depression status. Results: Of the 44 patients enrolled in the study, 13 (30 %) met our criteria for depression, representing 18 % of patients aged <13 years and 34 % of those aged ≥13 years. Although not reaching statistical significance, the adjusted risk of depression was lower for patients with CKD duration of ≤3 years than for those with longer CKD duration (RR 0.19, 95 % CI 0.02, 1.53), and for those with CKD stage IV (RR 0.23, 95 % CI 0.05, 1.09) and CKD stage V (RR 0.13, 95 % CI 0.01, 1.07) compared to those with CKD stage III. Conclusions: Our results indicate that depression is common in children with CKD, particularly for those with longstanding renal disease and at CKD stage III.

Abstract:BackgroundPatients with terminal chronic kidney disease (CKDT) requiring renal replacement therapies (RRT) undergo important changes in living habits and frequently need caregiving. These patients and their caregivers are risk groups for the development of physical and psychological symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of anxiety, depression, stress, fatigue, social support, and quality of life in patients with CKD and their caregivers.MethodThis cross sectional study was conducted with 21 patients and their caregivers, from January to September 2015. We included patients aged over 18 years, with at least 6 months on dialysis treatment, and caregivers who were family members. The participants’ social, demographic, clinical, laboratory, and psychological variables were evaluated. A descriptive analysis and an examination of the association between patients and caregivers were performed.ResultsAmong patients, we observed that 38.1% had symptoms that indicated anxiety and depression. The average score for practical social support was 3.15 ± 0.769 and that for emotional social support was 3.16 ± 0.79. As for fatigue, 14.3% of patients reported being ‘extremely tired’ and 14.3% reported that they engaged in all the activities they usually performed before the illness. Further, 57.1% presented stress, and of these, 66.7% were at the resistance stage, with predominance of psychological symptoms in 60.0%. The quality of life domain in terms of functional capacity (FC) presented a correlation with haemoglobin level (r = 0.581, p = 0.006) and non-anaemic patients presented better FC. Among caregivers, we observed symptoms that indicated anxiety and depression in 33.3% of the sample. Caregivers exhibited an average score of 2.88 ± 0.77 for practical social support and 3.0 ± 0.72 for emotional social support. Further, 14.3% reported being ‘extremely tired’ and 28.8% reported that they engaged in all activities that they usually performed before the patient’s illness. When comparing the two groups (patients vs. caregivers), we observed that they presented similar results for the presence of anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Caregivers received less social support than patients did. Both groups presented similar predominance of stress levels; however, patients presented more predominance of psychological symptoms. With reference to quality of life, patients and caregivers presented similar results on the social aspects, vitality, mental health, and mental domains.ConclusionThe mental health characteristics of patients and caregivers were similar, and within the context of dialysis for renal disease, both must undergo specific interventions.

Abstract:The Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) prospective cohort study was designed to address the neurocognitive, growth, cardiovascular, and disease progression of children and adolescents with mild to moderate CKD. The study has had continuous funding from NIDDK for 17 years and has contributed significant advances in pediatric CKD. The goals of this educational review are threefold: (1) to provide an overview of the neurocognitive and psychosocial studies from CKiD to date; (2) to provide best practice recommendations for those working with the neurocognitive and psychosocial aspects of pediatric CKD based on CKiD findings; and (3) to help chart future goals and directives for both research and clinical practice. This collection of 22 empirical studies has produced a number of key findings for children and adolescents with mild to moderate CKD. While various studies suggest a relatively positive presentation for this population as a whole, without evidence of significant impairment or deterioration, findings do indicate the presence of neurocognitive dysfunction, emotional-behavioral difficulties, and lower quality of life for many children with CKD. These findings support the promotion of best practices that are accompanied by additional future clinical and research initiatives with this patient population.

The Impact of Pediatric CKD on Educational and Employment Outcomes

Abstract:Key Points: This study evaluates educational and employment outcomes in patients with pediatric kidney disease and assesses predictors of educational attainment and employment in young adulthood.Despite high rates of high school graduation, nearly 20% of patients with CKD are unemployed or receiving disability at long-term follow-up. Background: Pediatric patients with CKD are at risk for neurocognitive deficits and academic underachievement. This population may be at risk for lower educational attainment and higher rates of unemployment; however, published data have focused on patients with advanced CKD and exist in isolation from assessment of neurocognition and kidney function. Methods: Data from the CKD in Children (CKiD) cohort study were used to characterize educational attainment and employment status in young adults with CKD. We used ratings of executive function as a predictor of future educational attainment and employment status. Linear regression models predicted the highest grade level completed. Logistic regression models predicted unemployment. Results: A total of 296 CKiD participants aged 18 years or older had available educational data. In total, 220 of 296 had employment data. By age 22 years, 97% had completed high school and 48% completed 2+ years of college. Among those reporting employment status, 58% were part-time or full-time employed, 22% were nonworking students, and 20% were unemployed and/or receiving disability. In adjusted models, lower kidney function (P = 0.02), worse executive function (P = 0.02), and poor performance on achievement testing (P = 0.004) predicted lower grade level completed relative to expectation for age. Conclusions: CKiD study patients appear to have a better high school graduation rates (97%) than the adjusted national high school graduation rate (86%). Conversely, roughly 20% of participants were unemployed or receiving disability at study follow-up. Tailored interventions may benefit patients with CKD with lower kidney function and/or executive function deficits to optimize educational/employment outcomes in adulthood.

In the present study, we address this issue by examining the inhibition by mazindol of the binding of [3H]WIN 35,428 ([3H]2beta-carbomethyoxy-3beta-(4-fluorophenyl)-tropane), a phenyltropane analog of cocaine, and the inhibition by WIN 35,428 of [3H]mazindol binding to the cloned human dopamine transporter expressed in C6 glioma cells. The design involved the construction of inhibition curves at six widely different radioligand levels, enabling the distinction between the nonlinear hyperbolic competition (i.e., negative allosteric) model and the competitive (i.e., mutually exclusive binding) model. Nonlinear computer curve-fitting analysis indicated no difference in the goodness of fit between the two models; the negative allosteric model indicated an extremely high allosteric constant of approximately > or = 100, which practically equates to the competitive model. The present results suggest that complex interactions reported between cocaine and mazindol in inhibiting dopamine transport are beyond the level of ligand recognition.

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to analyze psychosocial aspects of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children treated with automated peritoneal dialysis (APD). Methods: The study assessed 41 children > 2 (range 2.1-18) years of age and their parents. Data concerning the illness and sociodemographic parameters were collected. Patients completed the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) and their parents the PedsQL-proxy version, General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), and Caregiver's Burden Scale (CBS). Results: Parents rated their children's overall health-related quality of life (QoL) as well as their physical and emotional functioning lower than the patients themselves. The majority of primary caregivers had a medium level of the total burden index in the CBS and higher values in the scales need for support and perceived available support than in the received support (BSSS). In the GHQ-12, 51.2% of primary caregivers had scores >2 points, which indicated the possible occurrence of abnormal mental functioning. Conclusions: Financial support for patients' families is necessary. Parents who provide primary care to children on PD require, above all, emotional support and assistance in self-fulfilment. More than half of them may have impaired mental function. There is the strong need to provide continuous psychological care for caregivers. Differences in perception of the children's activity in varied areas by the patients themselves and their caregivers may contribute to further problems within families.
Higher Mental Workload is Associated With Poorer Laparoscopic Performance as Measured by the NASA-TLX Tool

Abstract:Introduction: Increased workload during task performance may increase fatigue and facilitate errors. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) is a previously validated tool for workload self-assessment. We assessed the relationship of workload and performance during simulator training on a complex laparoscopic task. Methods: NASA-TLX workload data from three separate trials were analyzed. All participants were novices (n = 28), followed the same curriculum on the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery suturing model, and were tested in the animal operating room (OR) on a Nissen fundoplication model after training. Performance and workload scores were recorded at baseline, after proficiency achievement, and during the test. Performance, NASA-TLX scores, and inadvertent injuries during the test were analyzed and compared. Results: Workload scores declined during training and mirrored performance changes. NASA-TLX scores correlated significantly with performance scores (r = −0.5, P < 0.001). Participants with higher workload scores caused more inadvertent injuries to adjacent structures in the OR (r = 0.38, P < 0.05). Increased mental and physical workload scores at baseline correlated with higher workload scores in the OR (r = 0.52–0.82; P < 0.05) and more inadvertent injuries (r = 0.52, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Increased workload is associated with inferior task performance and higher likelihood of errors. The NASA-TLX questionnaire accurately reflects workload changes during simulator training and may identify individuals more likely to experience high workload and more prone to errors during skill transfer to the clinical environment.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To assess parent psychological distress in families of children with common chronic health conditions (CHC) and to explore relationships between parent psychological distress, unmet supportive care needs and children’s quality of life (QoL). Method Cross-sectional study involving parents of children diagnosed with a common CHC between 0 and 12 years of age and who had received treatment within the last 5 years. Eligible parents completed an online survey, that included the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) assessing distress in parents and a 34-item assessment of unmet supportive care needs across 6 domains. Parents completed ratings of their child’s current functioning (QoL) using the 23-item PedsQL. Multivariable regression models examined the relative association between unmet needs, children’s QoL and parents’ depression, anxiety, and stress. Results The sample consisted of 194 parents of children with congenital heart disease (n=97; 50%), diabetes (n=50; 26%), cancer (n=39; 20%), and asthma (n=8; 4%). A significant proportion of parents had moderate–severe symptoms of depression (26%), anxiety (38%), and stress (40%). Of the PedsQL scales, the poorest outcomes were found for emotional and school functioning. Multivariable analyses showed that both higher unmet needs and poorer child emotional functioning were associated with parent depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. Conclusion Evidence linking parent distress symptoms to higher unmet needs and poorer child emotional functioning suggests these factors may be targets for interventions to alleviate parent distress. Longitudinal research using larger samples is required to replicate findings, and clarify the magnitude and direction of associations.

Abstract:Background: Kidney failure at any age has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL) but the overall symptom burden for children and young people (CYP) is poorly described. Kidney failure has no cure and whilst transplantation is the preferred management option, it is not always possible, with patients requiring supportive care at the end of their lives. Aim: To use the literature to understand the symptom burden for CYP with kidney failure who are approaching end-of-life. Methods: Using three databases, a systematic literature review was performed to identify eligible studies to extract data on symptoms experienced in CYP aged < 21 years with kidney failure. Data extraction was completed by two authors using a pre-designed proforma. Study quality assessment was undertaken using the BMJ AXIS tool. Results: A total of 20,003 titles were screened to yielding 35 eligible studies including 2,862 CYP with chronic kidney disease (CKD), of whom 1,624 (57%) had CKD stage 5. The studies included a median of 30 (range 7-241) patients. Symptoms were subcategorised into eight groups: sleep, mental health, gastrointestinal, dermatology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), neurology, multiple symptoms, and ophthalmology. The prevalences of the most commonly reported symptoms were: restless leg syndrome 16.7-45%, sleep disordered breathing 20-46%, hypersomnia 14.3-60%, depression 12.5-67%, anxiety 5.3-34%, overall gastrointestinal symptoms 43-82.6%, nausea and vomiting 15.8-68.4%, abdominal pain 10.5-67.4%, altered appetite or anorexia 19-90%, xerosis 53.5-100%, pruritis 18.6-69%, headache 24-76.2% and ophthalmological symptoms 26%. Within each subgroup, the symptom definitions used were heterogeneous, the methods of assessment were varied and some symptoms, such as pain and constipation, were poorly represented. Conclusions: There is a marked lack of evidence relating to the symptom burden for CYP with CKD. This study highlights the high symptom prevalence, particularly in relation to sleep, mental health, headache, dermatological and gastrointestinal symptoms. There is a need for consensus recommendations on the evaluation and management of symptoms for CYP with CKD approaching end-of-life. Prospero id: CRD42022346120.
