Abstract:Objective: Oxidative stress is a risk factor for sarcopenia. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a widely employed tool for evaluating the oxidative stress-related exposures from dietary and lifestyle factors. In this study, we aimed to conducted to explore the relationship between OBS and skeletal muscle mass and strength. Methods: 6,438 subjects from 2011 to 2018 and 5,414 from 2011 to 2014 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were selected for analysis. The correlations between OBS and skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength were investigated using multivariate logistic regression and linear regression analysis. Results: Compared with lowest OBS, participants with OBS in the highest quartile had lower risk of low skeletal muscle mass (OR = 0.173 (0.120 ~ 0.248), p < 0.0001) and low handgrip strength (β = 0.173 (0.120 ~ 0.248), p = 0.011). The negative association also were found between dietary/lifestyle OBS and skeletal muscle mass (OR = 0.268 (0.178 ~ 0.404), p < 0.0001; OR = 0.231 (0.130 ~ 0.410), p < 0.0001) and handgrip strength (β = 1.812 (0.555 ~ 3.071), p = 0.008; β = -2.255 (-3.430 ~ -1.079), p < 0.001) independently. The positive association remains significant, especially among men and those with higher education levels by subgroup analysis. Conclusion: All of these results indicated a negative association between OBS and low skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength. An antioxidant-rich diet and healthy lifestyle are crucial for enhancing skeletal muscle mass and strength.

Abstract:Background: Sarcopenia, a condition characterized by diminished skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function, accompanied by inflammation and oxidative stress, remains an area of limited exploration concerning its correlation with the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS). Methods: Leveraging data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we meticulously examined 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors to derive the OBS. Adjusting appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) by body mass index (BMI) served as the designated marker for sarcopenia. To scrutinize the association between OBS and sarcopenia, we conducted weighted logistic regression and engaged in sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, we implemented subgroup analysis and interaction tests to gain comprehensive insights into the relationship across diverse populations. Results: In a sample comprising 6,677 individuals aged 20-59, logistic regression illuminated a negative association between OBS and sarcopenia [OR = 0.942 (0.920, 0.964), p < 0.001]. Robust associations were also discerned between diseases and both dietary and lifestyle OBS. Subgroup analysis unveiled a more pronounced negative association in older, married/living with partner or more educated individuals. Moreover, this association persisted in populations grappling with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and arthritis. Conclusion: Our study posits a perceptible link between OBS and the prevalence of sarcopenia among American adults.

Abstract:Background: Previous studies have established a correlation between the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and sarcopenia. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is an integrated measure that reflects the overall balance of antioxidants and pro-oxidants in dietary components and lifestyle. However, there are limited reports on the association between OBS and lean mass and the impact of protein intake on the association between OBS and lean mass. Methods: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018, multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations between OBS and outcomes. The findings were then illustrated through fitted smoothing curves and threshold effect analyses. Results: This study included 2,441 participants, demonstrating that higher OBS is significantly associated with an increased ratio of appendicular lean mass to body mass index. Key inflection points at OBS 31 mark pronounced changes in these associations, with age and protein intake notably affecting the association. The effect of OBS on lean mass varies among populations with high and low protein intake. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that OBS is significantly and positively associated with lean mass. A high protein intake of more than 84.5 g/day may enhance the role of OBS in influencing muscle health to improve muscle outcomes.

Abstract:Background : Frailty has been one of the most serious global public health challenges we will ever face. Oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of frailty, and may be accurately reflected by the oxidative balance score (OBS). However, there have been no studies examining the effect of OBS on frailty. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association between OBS and frailty and whether there was an interaction between the outcomes. Methods : 22 914 participants aged over 20 years taking part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2007–2018 were involved in the study. Sixteen dietary factors and four lifestyle factors were selected to score the OBS. A modified 36-item deficit cumulative frailty index (FI) was used to assess the degree of frailty. The association between OBS and frailty was analyzed using binary logistic regression. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were used to investigate whether this association was stable across populations. Results : A negative association between OBS and the prevalence of frailty was found in this study. There was also an interaction between OBS and age in their association with frailty. High OBS was significantly and negatively associated with the prevalence of frailty in the 20–39 and 40–64 age groups. In addition, higher OBS combined with a population in the 20–39 age group resulted in a stronger negative association with frailty. Conclusion : High OBS was significantly associated with lower odds of frailty. An interaction existed between OBS and age. Individuals, especially in relatively young populations, are advised to increase OBS through greater intake of antioxidant nutrients and healthier lifestyles, thereby reducing the adverse effects of frailty.

Association of the oxidation balance score with the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from the NHANES 2007-2012: A large-scale cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: The occurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with oxidative stress. Oxidation Balance Score (OBS) can evaluate the oxidation and antioxidant status of the body. However, we found no studies that examined the association between the two. Objective: To assess the association between OBS and COPD prevalence, and to explore dietary and lifestyle patterns aimed at preventing and delay COPD in adults. Method: We included 13,909 participants using data from the NHANES. Weighted logistic regression model and weighted restricted cubic spline curve were used to explore the relationship between OBS and COPD. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were used to determine the stability of results. Mediation analysis was employed to assess the effect of inflammatory factors. Result: In logistic regression model, compared with the lowest quartile of OBS, the highest quartile of OBS, diet OBS, lifestyle OBS and COPD had odd ratios OR(95%CI)=0.67 (0.51, 0.89), OR (95% CI) = 0.71 (0.55, 0.93), and OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.26, 0.58) respectively. The restricted cubic spline curve reveals that OBS and dietary OBS exhibit an L-shaped curve in relation to COPD prevalence, while lifestyle OBS shows a negative correlation curve with COPD prevalence. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis proved the robustness of the association. Mediation analysis demonstrated that inflammatory factors mediate the association of OBS on the prevalence of COPD. Conclusion: The increase of OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of COPD, but excessive OBS and dietary OBS were associated with an inapparent decrease or even increased risk of COPD.

Abstract:Background: The oxidative balance score (OBS), an encompassing scoring mechanism for assessing oxidative stress, is formulated based on nutritional and lifestyle components. The emergence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is intricately linked to oxidative stress. Nonetheless, the correlation between OBS and MetS displays variability within distinct cohorts. Objective: We worked on the relationships between OBS and the risk of MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients. Methods: A total of 11,171 adult participants were collected from the U.S. National Health Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. Employing survey-weighted logistic models, we evaluated the relationship between OBS and MetS risk. Furthermore, survey-weighted linear models were utilized to investigate the connection between OBS and MetS severity. Among the participants, 3,621 individuals had their survival status recorded, allowing us to employ Cox proportional hazards regression models in order to ascertain the association between OBS and the all-cause mortality within the subset of individuals with MetS. The OBS (where a higher OBS signified an increased prevalence of anti- or pro-oxidant exposures) weighed the 20 factors, while the MetS severity score weighed the five factors. Results: After multivariable adjustment, individuals with elevated OBS were found to exhibit a decreased susceptibility to MetS [odds ratio (OR) 0.95; 95% CI 0.94-0.96]. The adjusted OR was 0.42 (95% CI 0.33-0.53) for MetS risk in the fourth OBS quartile compared with those in the first OBS quartile (P for trend < 0.001). A one-unit increase in OBS was linked to a 3% reduction in MetS severity score by 3% (mean difference, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.04 to -0.03). Moreover, increased OBS correlated with decreased hazard of all-cause mortality risk among MetS subjects (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.93-0.98). These associations retained their strength even subsequent to the introduction of sensitivity analyses. There existed a statistically significant negative correlation between diet/lifestyle OBS and both MetS risk as well as MetS severity. Conclusions: An inverse correlation was observed between OBS and the susceptibility to MetS, MetS severity, and all-cause mortality of MetS patients. Health outcomes for MetS patients were positively related to antioxidant diets and lifestyles.

Abstract:Oxidative Balance Scores (OBS) are utilized to assess an individual's antioxidant status, encompassing both dietary and lifestyle factors that contribute to oxidative balance. This study investigates the relationship between OBS and chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevalence among U.S. adults, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018. The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of 13,373 individuals from NHANES, focusing on adults aged 20 years or older. OBS was calculated using 20 components, including dietary and lifestyle factors. CKD was identified based on albumin-to-creatinine ratio and estimated glomerular filtration rate, with patients stratified into mild, moderate, and high-risk groups. Statistical analysis included logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines to explore the OBS-CKD relationship. Our findings indicate a statistically significant negative correlation between OBS and CKD prevalence, particularly in mild and moderate-risk groups. Higher OBS quartiles were associated with a decreased likelihood of CKD (OR 0.70; 95% CI 0.53–0.92; P = 0.013). Restricted cubic splines indicated a non-linear, inverse association between OBS and CKD odds for the overall population (P for nonlinearity = 0.017). For mild and moderate CKD risk groups, the relationships were less pronounced (P for nonlinearity = 0.053 and 0.184, respectively), suggesting variability in the OBS-CKD link across different risk levels. The study highlights the potential of elevated OBS as a primary prevention measure for CKD, particularly in individuals with mild to moderate risk. These findings underscore the importance of antioxidant status in CKD risk management and encourage further research into the role of dietary and lifestyle factors in CKD prevention.

Abstract:Oxidative stress strongly influences the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction (ED). In this study, we used the oxidative balance score (OBS), a composite index, to measure the effects of oxidative stress triggered by diet and lifestyle factors. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the statistical relationship between OBS and ED among adult males in the U.S. The data from 3318 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001–2004 were analyzed. Weighted logistic regression was used to correct for confounding factors and acquire nationwide representative estimates. Generalized additive modeling was used to explore the nonlinear relationship. We also supplemented subgroup and sensitivity analysis to examine the robustness of the main results. Multivariate logistic regression indicated a consistent negative linear association between OBS and ED across all participants [OR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.94, 0.98)]. After categorizing OBS into tertiles, participants in the highest tertile had 43% lower odds of having ED than those in the lowest tertile [OR (95% CI) = 0.57 (0.37, 0.87)]. The generalized additive model also visualized the linear trend of this association. Furthermore, this linear relationship remained relatively consistent, regardless of whether subgroup or sensitivity analyses were performed. Our findings suggest that adopting a lifestyle and diet pattern that promotes favorable OBS may effectively protect against the development of ED, regardless of the underlying causes.

Abstract:Objective: Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is an index affecting the oxidative stress of dietary and lifestyle factors. We aimed to explore the association of OBS with prostate specific antigen (PSA) among older males. Methods: A total of 5,136 samples were collected in this study to investigate the relationship between OBS and PSA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline were used to assess the associations between OBS and PSA. Results: Compared with the Q1 group, the odds ratios for the association between OBS and PSA were 1.005 (1.003, 1.009), 1.003 (1.001, 1.006), and 1.001 (0.978, 1.022) for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. In the age-specific analyses, the association was significant among individuals aged 65 years old and over: the odds ratios for the association between OBS and PSA were 1.019 (1.005, 1.028), 1.028 (1.018, 1.039), and 1.038 (1.022, 1.049) for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. But it was not significant among individuals aged less than 65 years old: the odds ratios for the association between OBS and PSA were 1.016 (0.995, 1.026), 1.015 (0.985, 1.022), and 0.988 (0.978, 1.016) for Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively. The restricted cubic splines also indicated a nonlinear relationship between OBS and PSA among individuals aged 65 years old and over ( P overall = 0.006, P nonlinear = 0.021). Conclusion: Our findings provide evidence that OBS is positively associated with higher levels of PSA among older adults. Further large-scale prospective cohort studies are needed to verify our findings.

Abstract:Introduction: Oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was devised to quantify the overall oxidative state, integrating pro-oxidant and antioxidant influences from both dietary intake and lifestyle practices. The aim of this study was to delve into the relationship between the OBS and CKD within the adult population of the United States. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009-2018, we derived the OBS from 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. We employed weighted multivariate regression to probe the link between OBS and CKD. Additionally, we undertook subgroup analyses and applied Restricted Cubic Spline Regression (RCS) for further data analyses. Results: This study encompassed 19,444 participants. Logistic regression analysis consistently demonstrated a protective effect of higher OBS on CKD. In Model 3, each unit increase in OBS was associated with a 2% reduction in the risk of CKD (95% CI: 0.97-0.99, p < 0.001) and a 4% reduction in the risk of reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (95% CI: 0.95-0.98, p < 0.001). The highest OBS quintile (Q4) also showed significant reductions in the risk of CKD (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.53-0.82, p < 0.001) and reduced eGFR (OR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.37-0.69, p < 0.001) in Model 3. RCS analysis revealed a linear relationship between OBS and CKD. Subgroup analyses indicated significant associations between OBS and CKD in most subgroups, except for those without hypertension or with cardiovascular disease. Additionally, interaction analyses demonstrated that age, hypertension, and diabetes significantly modify the association between OBS and CKD risk. Conclusion: An elevated OBS, reflecting a predominance of antioxidants, correlates with a diminished CKD risk in the American adult demographic. These insights emphasize the potential influence of oxidative equilibrium on the development of CKD.

Abstract:Background The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) was created to evaluate an individual's overall antioxidant status. The objective of this study was to examine the association between OBS and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) among individuals aged ≥ 40 years. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2013–2014 and included adults aged ≥ 40 years. Survey-weighted multivariable logistic and restricted cubic spline models were used to assess the association between OBS and AAC. Results Among 2520 participants, 744 were diagnosed with AAC (weighted percentage, 28.13%). Survey-weighted multivariable logistic revealed an inverse association between OBS and AAC [0.98 (0.96, 1.00)], and the nonlinear dose-response relationship was observed. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests revealed that this inverse relationship was consistent across different populations (all P for interaction > 0.05). Conclusions OBS was inversely associated with the prevalence of AAC among individuals aged ≥ 40 years. Maintaining a higher OBS may be beneficial in reducing the burden of AAC.

Abstract:Background: The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), which quantifies the balance between antioxidants and pro-oxidants influenced by diet and lifestyle, is crucial given oxidative stress's significant role in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This study aims to determine the association between OBS and CKD using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018. OBS was constructed from a detailed array of 20 factors, including dietary nutrients and lifestyle behaviors. The relationship between OBS and CKD risk was evaluated using weighted logistic regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, with a generalized additive model (GAM) examining non-linear associations. Subgroup analyses and interaction effects across diverse demographic and clinical groups, along with sensitivity analyses, were performed to validate the findings. Results: Among 32,120 participants analyzed, 4,786 were identified with CKD. Fully adjusted weighted logistic regression analysis revealed that each unit increase in OBS was associated with a 2% reduction in CKD prevalence [OR: 0.98 (0.98–0.99), P < 0.001]. Higher OBS quartiles were significantly correlated with a decreased CKD risk [Q4 vs . Q1: OR: 0.82 (0.68–0.98), P = 0.03; P for trend = 0.01]. The GAM and smoothed curve fit indicated a linear relationship between OBS and the risk of CKD. Stratified and sensitivity analyses further substantiated the inverse relationship between OBS and CKD prevalence. Conclusions: Our findings from the NHANES data affirm a significant inverse association between OBS and CKD risk in the U.S. population, underscoring the role of optimizing dietary and lifestyle factors in managing CKD risk. These results advocate for incorporating OBS considerations into CKD prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract:Background: The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a systematic tool to assess the effects of diet and lifestyle in relation to oxidative stress. The association between OBS and gout has not been reported previously. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the complex association between OBS and gout in US adults. Methods: In all, 10 492 participants were included in this study. The exposure variable was OBS, which was scored by 16 dietary and four lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression, subgroup analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to analyze the association between OBS and gout. Results: Compared with the lowest OBS quartile group (Q1), the multivariate corrected odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [C]) for the highest quartile of OBS (Q4) was 0.72 (0.52-1.00) (p = .13 for trend); furthermore, the RCS showed a negative linear relationship between OBS and gout (p-nonlinear = .606). Conclusion: In conclusion, the risk of gout is higher with high OBS. The prevalence of gout decreased with higher OBS. Diabetes may alter this negative correlation.

Abstract:Background: Most studies have primarily focused on assessing the association between diet or exercise patterns and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This study adopted a more comprehensive approach by introducing the oxidative balance score (OBS) to evaluate the combined effects of diet and lifestyle on the body's antioxidant ability. Our main objective was to investigate the association between OBS and the burden of MASLD in the United States. Methods: Participants with complete information from 2001 to 2018 were included. In the absence of other definite liver injury factors, the United States fatty liver index (us-FLI) ≥ 30 was used as the diagnostic criterion for MASLD. We first calculated the weighted prevalence for each cycle and stratified it according to demographic and metabolic-related disease characteristics. Subsequently, weighted multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate the relationship between OBS and MASLD. In addition, we explored the body's inflammatory state and the level of insulin resistance (IR) in mediating OBS and MASLD. Results: From 2001 to 2018, the prevalence of MASLD in the U.S. population as a whole increased from 29.76% to 36.04%, and the rate was higher in people with metabolic-related diseases. Notably, OBS exhibited a negative correlation with MASLD. Participants in the highest tertile of OBS had a significantly lower prevalence of MASLD compared to those in the lowest tertile [OR: 0.72, 95%CI: (0.57, 0.92), p < 0.001]. Moreover, a high OBS is associated with a lower inflammatory state and level of IR. The body's inflammatory state and IR level mediated the association between OBS and MASLD by 5.2% and 39.7%, respectively (both p < 0.001). Conclusions: In this study, we observed an increasing prevalence of MASLD over the years. A higher OBS was associated with a lower risk of MASLD, especially when OBS ≥ 25. The body's inflammatory state and IR level mediate the association between OBS and MASLD, but the mechanism needs to be further investigated.

Abstract:Background: Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel indicator of the overall antioxidant/oxidant balance, providing a comprehensive reflection of the body's overall oxidative stress status, with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between OBS with serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia. Methods: Data utilized in this study were sourced from the 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants under 18 years old, those with ≤16 complete data out of 20 OBS components, incomplete serum uric acid data, and missing covariates were excluded from the analysis. OBS was computed by evaluating 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, encompassing 5 pro-oxidants and 15 antioxidants, guided by a priori knowledge of their relationship with oxidative stress. Results: A total of 1,5096 individuals were included in our analysis with 49.7% being male, and an average age of 49.05 ± 17.56 years. The mean OBS was 19.76 ± 7.17. Hyperuricemia was present in 19.28% of participants. Due to the right-skewed distribution of the OBS, a natural log transformation was applied to address this issue, and Quartiles of lnOBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.10–2.56 (N=3526), 2.64–2.94 (N=3748), 3.00–3.22 (N=4026), and 3.26–3.61 (N=3796), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher lnOBS quantiles were correlated with lower serum uric acid levels. Compared with the lowest lnOBS quantile, participants in the highest lnOBS quantile had a significant serum uric acid decrease of 16.94 μmol/L for each unit increase in lnOBS (β=-16.94, 95% CI: -20.44, -13.45). Similar negative associations were observed in the second-highest (β=-8.07, 95% CI: -11.45, -4.69) and third-highest (β=-11.69, 95% CI: -15.05, -8.34) lnOBS quantiles. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.00, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.88), and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.71), respectively. Compared to Quartile 1, participants in Quartile 4 had a 38% lower prevalence of hyperuricemia. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed that there was a significant dependence of sex between OBS and serum uric acid (p for interaction 0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia showed there is no significant dependence on these negative correlations (all p for interaction >0.05). Conclusions: The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in US adults exhibited a negative association with OBS. By exploring this connection, our research aims to gain a better understanding of how oxidative balance affects the prevalence of hyperuricemia. This could provide valuable insights for developing preventive strategies and interventions for hyperuricemia. Additional large-scale prospective studies are required to explore the role of OBS in hyperuricemia further.

Abstract:Background: The correlation between oxidative stress and female infertility pathogenesis was established, and the oxidative balance score (OBS) can serve as a measure of overall oxidative stress burden within an individual. Prior reports have not addressed the relationship between OBS and female infertility. This study endeavors to investigate the association between infertility risk in female and OBS. Methods: The analysis focused on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2018. OBS was determined from 16 dietary components and 4 lifestyle components. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to investigate the relationship between OBS and female infertility. Further stratified analysis was conducted to examine the associations across various subgroups. To elucidate the dose-response relationship between infertility risk in female and OBS, a restricted cubic spline function was employed. Results: The study included a total of 1410 participants. Through weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, we observed a consistent inverse correlation between OBS and the risk of female infertility [OR (95% CI) = 0.97 (0.95, 0.99), p = 0.047]. When participants were segregated into quartiles based on OBS, those in the highest quartile had a 61% [OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.2, 0.79), p = 0.01] reduced risk of infertility compared to those in the lowest quartile of OBS. A trend test assessing OBS by quartile also revealed the relationship between OBS and female infertility. This correlation remained constant across both dietary and lifestyle OBS. Additionally, lifestyle OBS and female infertility exhibited a nonlinear association. A sensitivity analysis verified the consistency of our findings. Conclusion: The study found that a higher OBS is associated with a lower prevalence of female infertility. These results emphasized the potential role of oxidative homeostasis in the pathogenesis of infertility and highlighted the importance of follow-up studies and prevention strategies.

Abstract:Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disease in which oxidative stress has been proposed as one of the primary markers. The oxidative balance score (OBS) represents the oxidative balance of a person's dietary pattern using the merged intake of anti-oxidants and pro-oxidants. Therefore, the present study assessed the association between OBS and sarcopenia in Iranian older adults. In the current study, 80 people with sarcopenia and 80 without it were considered the case and control groups, respectively. All controls were matched by sex with cases. To confirm sarcopenia, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), handgrip strength (HGS) measurement, and gait speed were used. Also, body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A valid and reliable food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to assess all participants' dietary intake of pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants. Conditional logistic regression was applied to assess the association between OBS and sarcopenia. In the bivariate model, we observed lower odds of sarcopenia in the second and last tertile of OBS in comparison to the first tertile (T) (T 2 – odds ratio (OR) = 0.414, 95% confidence interval (CI) : 0.186–0.918 and T 3 – OR = 0.101, 95% CI: 0.041–0.248). After adjusting for potential confounders, the association was not significant in second and last tertile of OBS in comparision to the first one. The present study's findings demonstrated that overcoming exposure to anti-oxidants over pro-oxidants, as illustrated by a higher OBS, is not related to lower odds of sarcopenia in older adults.
