Abstract:Mindfulness is a state of being fully attentive to the current moment and is an experiential way of living in daily life. As a personal trait, mindfulness has been proven to enhance various negative emotions and behaviors. However, in the field of driving, there is still a lack of research on the mechanisms of mindfulness on anger expression behavior, specifically aggressive driving. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal the impact of mindfulness on drivers' aggressive driving behaviors and the mediating effect of driving anger and anger rumination. A total of 350 (208 males and 142 females) participants in China voluntarily completed a series of questionnaires, including the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS), the Driving Anger Scale (DAS), the Anger Rumination Scale (ARS) and the Driving Anger Expression Inventory (DAX). The hierarchical multiple regression analysis and pathway analysis results showed that mindfulness negatively predicted driving anger, anger rumination and driving anger expression. Moreover, driving anger and anger rumination mediated the relationship between mindfulness and driving anger expression, accounting for 9.51% and 18.74% of the total effect, respectively. The chain-mediated effect of driving anger and anger rumination accounted for 8.00% of the total effect. This study has revealed some of the internal mechanisms through which mindfulness reduces aggressive driving. It fills a part of the gap in understanding the protective role of mindfulness in the driving domain. Furthermore, it suggests mindfulness interventions for drivers, which may have the potential to enhance overall road safety.

Comparison of Different Combinations of Ultra-Short-Term HRV Features for Identifying Driving Anger

Abstract:Objective: Anger is one of the basic negative emotions, and scenes such as road rage can pose a threat to public safety. The expression of anger and the characteristics of heart rate variability (HRV) are closely related to the autonomic nervous system. HRV features can be analyzed using ultra-short-term R-R interval data; Therefore, this article aimed to compare the effectiveness of different combinations of HRV features in identifying driving anger. Method: Anger and calmness were elicited using video clips during electrocardiography (ECG). 67 HRV features were from extracted and remove individual differences. The best 10 features were selected by using Mann-Whitney U-test. Then, Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to calculate the accuracy and compare these combinations. Results: as the number of features in the combinations increased, the identification effect became better, but the improvement decreased. After the number of features exceeded 5, there was basically no improvement. Meanwhile, the gap between the combination and combination also decreased. Although the overall effect might not be as good when there were single or few features in them, certain specific feature combinations had good results, such as the combination of four features $(\text{SDNN}+\text{RR}- \text{Mean}+\text{Prc} 20\text{NN}+\text{pNN} 20)$ which was already one of the best combinations. Significance: This study can provide important support and reference for the identification and intervention of “road rage” and other scenarios.

Abstract:Emotions that occur while driving, especially anger, can significantly impact driving-related safety. Due to the potential risks of aggressive driving behaviour, which include hazardous driving and traffic accidents, it is important to explore strategies to effectively manage anger, thereby enhancing driving-related safety. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among psychological resilience, cognitive emotional regulation, driving anger, and the expression of driving anger. A total of 350 drivers (aged 21–50 years) completed online questionnaires, including the Connor–Davidson Psychological Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), the Driving Anger Scale (DAS), and the Driver Anger Expression Inventory (DAX). The results indicated that a higher level of psychological resilience is associated with a greater tendency to employ positive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and a greater tendency to exhibit more adaptive expressions of driving anger. In contrast, a lower level of psychological resilience is associated with negative cognitive emotion regulation strategies, resulting in elevated levels of driving anger and a higher frequency of nonadaptive expressions. Additionally, cognitive emotion regulation mediated the relationship between psychological resilience and driving anger. These findings suggest that drivers with high levels of psychological resilience and those who engage in effective cognitive emotion regulation strategies are more likely to remain calm in irritating driving situations, thereby enhancing overall driving-related safety.

Abstract:Driving with anger can result in hazardous driving behaviors, often arising from inadequate communication among Traffic Participants (TPs). Currently, external Human-Machine Interface (eHMI) technology provides a novel channel for enhancing communication among TPs, yet its role in regulating driving emotions remains uncertain. This study investigates the impact of eHMI technology on the regulation of driving anger. We simulated a driving scenario in which the preceding vehicle abruptly applied brakes to elicit anger from the following driver. Three eHMI formats (Symbol, Text, and Symbol + Text) positioned at the rear of the preceding vehicle were implemented to explain the sudden braking event and regulate drivers' emotions. Objective electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and subjective assessment data were analyzed to assess the effects of eHMIs on driving anger regulation. The results indicate that driving with eHMIs exhibited significant regulatory quality of drivers' anger. Among the three formats, Symbol + Text eHMI exerted a notable regulatory impact, while both Symbol and Text eHMI contributed to emotional regulation. This study illustrates the positive impact of eHMI on emotion regulation in traffic environments, providing valuable backing for traffic management authorities in developing guidelines and policies, and contributing to the standardization of future eHMI technologies.

Abstract:This study examined the mediating role of anger rumination in the relationship between anger and reactive aggression and the potential of adaptive anger rumination in reducing reactive aggression. Study 1, a two‐wave longitudinal survey of 177 Chinese adolescents, showed that anger rumination mediated the relationship between anger and reactive aggression. Study 2, an experimental study with 160 university students, showed that the self‐distanced group had lower aggression than the self‐immersed group, and anger rumination mediated the impact of anger on reactive aggression in only the self‐immersed group. These findings clarify the role of anger rumination concerning the relationship between anger and reactive‐aggression and highlight the importance of self‐distanced anger rumination in preventing reactive aggression among adolescents and young adults.

Synthesis and characterization of a novel stationary phase, Si-Zr/Ti(PMTDS), based upon ternary oxide support for high performance liquid chromatography

Abstract:A new stationary phase based on the thermal immobilization of poly(methyltetradecylsiloxane) (PMTDS) on silica particles coated with a mixture of zirconia and titania was prepared and evaluated for the chromatographic separation of test mixtures. The spherical particles were characterized by elemental analysis, SEM, FTIR and 29Si NMR. The physicochemical properties of PMTDS phase supported on Si-Zr/Ti were intermediate between PMTDS phases supported on titanized silica and zirconized silica. The chromatographic performance of Si-Zr/Ti(PMTDS) phase was similar to PMTDS phases based on metal oxide coated silica having only one metal oxide and the preparation of a Si-Zr/Ti(PMTDS) phase allowed evaluation of the effect of each oxide, zirconia and titania, on the separation process and on the stability of the immobilized polymer phase. The hydrolytic stability of Si-Zr/Ti(PMTDS) stationary phase was similar to the Si-Ti(PMTDS) phase, improving the chemical stability of the silica-based PMTDS phase by about 100%.
Which drivers drive as they live and who are transformed while driving? Analysis of moderators in the relationship between general anger and driving anger

Abstract:Introduction: Trait driving anger is a widely studied personality variable in the field of road safety, due to its strong relationship with both risky behavior on the road and crash-related events. The Deffenbacher's Driving Anger Scale theoretical approach has underlined different situations that could provoke anger in drivers, although trait driving anger is usually analyzed as a whole. Trait general anger has been proposed as one of the most relevant predictors of trait driving anger, showing moderate relationships with it. Method: The current research aimed to analyze the relationship between trait general anger and each one of the situations provoking anger, as well as to search for personality variables that could moderate these relationships. Based on literature review, it was expected that self-esteem would moderate both Discourtesy and Hostile gestures, Type-A behavior pattern would moderate both Slow driving and Traffic obstructions, and conscientiousness would moderate both Police presence and Illegal driving. A sample of 417 drivers (Mage = 31.24, SDage = 13.59, 64.5% females) taken from the Spanish general population completed a set of self-reports. Results: The results showed significant moderation effects in the case of Hostile gestures, Discourtesy, Illegal driving, and Slow driving. Conditional processes of these moderations were analyzed. Lastly, practical implications are discussed, allowing for tailored interventions to be implemented based on individual drivers' tendencies. Therefore, interventions should address different triggers of driving anger: boosting self-esteem for those angered by disrespect, targeting Type-A behavior reduction for those angered by traffic slowdowns, and promoting conscientiousness enhancement for those angered by others' risky driving.

Abstract:Road safety issue is an urgent problem that needs to be addressed and has been a growing public health concern worldwide. Previous research has investigated the risk factors associated with dangerous driving behavior. So far, however, little research has explored the potential influence of social exclusion on dangerous driving behavior, and little is known about the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The current study aims to empirically explore how and when social exclusion impacts dangerous driving behavior based on the Multimotive Model of social exclusion, and the effects of driving anger and cognitive reappraisal. A total of 240 Chinese drivers ( Mean age = 26.07, SD = 7.68) completed anonymous questionnaires regarding social exclusion, driving anger, dangerous driving behavior, and cognitive reappraisal. The findings indicated that (1) social exclusion positively predicted dangerous driving behavior; (2) driving anger fully mediated this association; (3) cognitive reappraisal respectively moderated the effect of social exclusion on dangerous driving behavior and driving anger. When cognitive reappraisal was low, social exclusion had a stronger positive effect on dangerous driving behavior. These findings highlight the significance of identifying the mechanisms underlying the effect of social exclusion on driving behavior. Certain implications can be provided for promoting drivers' safe driving behavior and reducing the negative effect of social exclusion.

Focusing on Appraisals: How and Why Anger and Fear Influence Driving Risk Perception.

Abstract:Introduction: The present research explores how and why anger and fear influence driving risk perception. Methods: Based on appraisal tendency framework, researchers hypothesized that anger and fear would influence driving risk perception in opposite directions due to their differences in appraisals. Results: Study 1 showed that anger reduced risk perception, whereas fear increased it. In Studies 2, 3, and 4, the researchers adopted the paradigm of reappraisal to investigate the causes of the opposite effects found in Study I. Consistent with our hypothesis, appraisals accounted for these effects: After reappraisals along the dimensions of certainty (Study 2), control (Study 3), and responsibility (Study 4), the different effects between anger and fear on driving risk perception diminished or disappeared. In addition, fearful or angry experience mediated the effects of reappraisals on driving risk perception. Impact on industry: The findings highlight the necessity to differentiate anger and fear in road safety management. Additionally, the current research also provides feasible methods (e.g., certainty, control, or responsibility reappraisal) to intervene in driving risk perception, which is important for driving safety. Abstract:Reactive aggression is a type of aggression that has severe consequences in individual's psychosocial development and social stability. Trait anger is a risk personality factor for reactive aggression. However, the mediating mechanism of this relationship has not been sufficiently analyzed. We proposed that hostile attribution bias and anger rumination may be cognitive factors that play mediating roles in the relationship between trait anger and reactive aggression. To test this hypothesis, a sample of 600 undergraduates (51.67% females, M age = 20.51, SD = 1.11) participated in this study. Findings showed that hostile attribution bias, anger rumination sequentially mediated the association between trait anger and reactive aggression. These results highlight the importance of anger rumination and hostile attribution bias to explain the link between trait anger and reactive aggression in undergraduates. The findings of the present study also provide valuable information about the role of negative cognitive activities (e.g., hostile attribution, ruminate in anger emotion) in high trait anger individual may trigger reactive aggression. The limitations of the study are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that anger rumination plays a critical role in increasing anger. The present study examined whether these effects were different with respect to different foci of anger. In Study 1, 96 participants were asked to ruminate about their shame-related or shame-unrelated anger experiences either in an analytical or an experiential way after recalling an autobiographical anger memory. In Study 2, either shame-related or shame-unrelated anger was evoked in participants (n = 176) by an accomplice, and then the participants were instructed to ruminate in one of the following ways: self-distanced analytical, self-distanced experiential, self-immersed analytical, and self-immersed experiential rumination. Study 1 showed significant interaction effects between the foci of anger and the mode of processing. Study 2 showed significant three-way interaction effects among the foci of anger, the mode of processing and the vantage perspective of rumination. Specifically, the results indicated that self-immersed analytical rumination was more useful than the other types of rumination in reducing shame-unrelated anger, while no difference was found regarding shame-related anger. These findings indicated that the effects of anger rumination are different regarding the foci of anger.

Abstract:The effects of two types of rumination on different kinds of executive functions were investigated. Fifty-nine participants (M age = 22.8 yr., SD = 2.5) were assigned to one of three conditions and instructed either to: (1) ruminate in a self-distanced way, (2) ruminate in a self-immersed way, or (3) think about the layout of their campus following anger induction. Afterward, the participants were directed to finish tasks designed to assess three kinds of executive functions: shifting, inhibition, and updating. Results showed that self-immersed rumination impaired shifting ability the most, while participants engaged in self-distanced rumination showed the worst performance on the inhibition task. No significant difference was found in the updating task. These results suggest that rumination influenced particular executive functions in different ways.
The role of trait emotional intelligence in driving anger: The mediating effect of emotion regulation

Abstract:Emotions during driving have an essential impact on driving safety. This study aims to explore the relationships among emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, driving anger and related behaviour. A total of 304 drivers (aged 18–57) completed online questionnaires, including the trait emotional intelligence (TEI) scale, difficulties in emotional regulation scale (DERS), driving anger scale (DAS) and driver anger expression inventory (DAX). The results showed that the influence of TEI on maladaptive driving anger expression was negative, and individuals with higher emotional intelligence showed less maladaptive expressions of driving anger. Difficulties in emotion regulation played a mediating role between emotional intelligence and driving anger. These results suggest that drivers with high emotional intelligence and emotion regulation may face driving situations calmly and with a high level of driving safety.

Abstract:Abstract Cardiac surgeons took to the heart and claimed an exclusive privilege to intervene. The task of cardiologists was to identify “candidates” and feed the great surgical machine. Recently, catheter surgery was developed and has fallen into the hands of cardiologists who became interventionists. Cardiac surgeons are concerned about shrinking domain, identity, and the future. The analysis of the current situation requires another look at old concepts: surgery, intervention, therapy, patients, invasiveness, etc., and a revision of the philosophy of the entire profession. Therapeutic plans comprise three interrelated components: the target, the bullet (therapeutic agent), and the gun (the way of delivering the bullet on target). This description characterizes surgery as a way of delivering. If side effects are effects that do not affect the target, surgical procedures are mostly side effects, with significant morbidity. Future surgical rationales should reconcile target‐specific therapy and minimal collateral damages: “minimal surgery!” or to use a new buzzword, “less invasive surgery.” Cardiac surgery has focused on surgical practice and neglected the science of cardiology, missing opportunities for new research, new rationales, new techniques, and new territories. Surgeons must again become Renaissance men, involved in the entire field of cardiology, with a special skill in surgical techniques. Cardiac surgeons should no longer confine their practice to the delivering end. This end does not, any more, justify the means.
Inducing driving anger with multi-stage road events in simulator environment

Abstract:This study aims to: (1) design and validate a novel driving-anger induction method using multi-stage simulated road events and (2) experimentally explore the influence of individual characteristics on anger intensity. Thirty-six drivers participated in the experiment, who were classified into the high trait anger (HTA) and low trait anger (LTA) groups. Each driver completed driving tasks in two scenarios under time pressure: with and without multi-stage anger-inducing events, and subjective and physiological data were collected. The scenarios with anger-inducing events led to significantly higher anger intensity, skin conductivity, breathing rate, and pupil diameter. Differences between HTA and LTA drivers during anger were mainly in subjective evaluations rather than physiological responses. The results also showed that the drivers in both groups tended to under-report their own anger intensity. This study provides a new method for inducing driving anger. The findings may contribute to future anger detection and intervention system designs.

Abstract:Bullying is an act of verbal, nonverbal, and physical violence. The cause is not trusting each other so that they bully each other even though the problem is trivial. In adolescence, individuals begin to have more abstract and reasonable thoughts, as well as the ability to draw conclusions from events. However, at this age emotions are still relatively unstable so that at this stage many are controlled by the emotions that exist in themselves. Teenagers who are victims of bullying tend to reflect on the distress they have experienced. They have a tendency to remember bad things that have happened in their lives and find it difficult to forget them, which is commonly called rumination. Previous research with child and adolescent subjects found that adolescents who experience victimization more often tend to experience rumination that causes anger and sadness. Moral Disengagement is considered a cognitive process that individuals use to justify behavior that they know is wrong. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of Moral Disengagement in moderating the relationship between anger rumination and bullying behavior in adolescents. This research uses a quantitative approach with a research design using ex-post facto which is carried out after a phenomenon occurs. Based on the results of the study, it was found that anger rumination has a significant role in the emergence of bullying behavior in bullying victims (Sig. 0.000 0.05) which means that anger rumination does not affect bullying. Likewise, the interaction between variables M and Y is also not significant, P = 0.7945 (>0.05) which means that moral disagreement variables do not affect bullying behavior. The results of the research show that anger rumination plays a non-significant role in the emergence of bullying behavior in bullying victims (Sig. 0.8836 < 0.005). The results of this study do not prove the effect of anger rumination on the emergence of bullying behavior. This result is not in accordance with previous research on rumination and anger rumination affecting the emergence of bullying behavior. Keywords: anger rumination, bullying, moral disengagement
Situational Driving Anger, Driving Performance and Allocation of Visual Attention

Abstract:The effects of situational (state) driving anger on driving performance and allocation of driver visual attention were studied using a driving simulator experiment. A total of 24 licensed drivers, half being experienced and half novices, took part in this study. Each participant completed two similar drives, one in an emotion-neutral condition and one in an angry state. The anger emotion state was induced using a 5-min long traffic-related video clip. The results showed that compared with emotion-neutral drivers, drivers in an angry state tended to drive faster, maintain less headway while following a lead vehicle, and accept shorter gaps when performing left-turns. Moreover, when angry, drivers tended to adopt later and harder braking in the lane merging event, indicating a failure to respond properly to an imminent crash that fell into the peripheral areas of the road. Responses to emergency situations that happened in the centre areas of the road, however, were unaffected by situational anger. Results on eye movement data revealed that when angry, drivers scanned a narrower area and applied a more heuristic processing style, both of which may increase the chance of missing potential hazards in peripheral areas. Furthermore, it was found that increased experience did not better prepare drivers for the adverse influences of situational anger. Simulating the effect of different lighting conditions on left-turn driving behavior using a scenario-based anger method

Abstract:Anger is a key factor affecting drivers' subjective judgment and driving skills. The influence of anger on driving behavior has been widely studied, but there is a lack of comparative research under different lighting conditions. Through a driving simulation experiment, this paper studies the influence of anger on left-turn driving behavior under two light conditions day and night. In the experiment, 32 licensed participants were divided into two groups, one in emotional neutrality and the other in anger. Among them, the emotional state of anger is induced by a traffic-related video. The results showed that compared with daytime participants, participants at night had higher anger intensity, shorter gap acceptance, and post encroachment time (PET) when left-turn driving. In addition, compared with neutral emotion participants, angry participants tended to accept shorter gap acceptance and PET when turning left. This indicates that participants failed to respond correctly to left-turn driving behavior in a state of anger. However, the response of gender differences to situational driving anger was not affected by light conditions. The anger intensity of male participants during the day and night was higher than that of female participants, and the gap between acceptance and PETs during left-turn was shorter than that of female participants. This shows that male participants are more likely to produce high-intensity anger and are more likely to make dangerous driving decisions in a state of anger. This paper puts forward some suggestions on identifying anger and preventing angry driving.

Abstract:Aggressive driving is an aberrant, complex, and resilient road behaviour. The concept of how people perceive mental processes has been shown to have a strong influence over how well emotion is regulated. This study aimed to develop and validate a new self-report measure of beliefs, the Beliefs about Driver Anger Questionnaire (BDAQ), that can predict mental processes known to be associated with driver aggression (i.e., anger rumination and anger). Two distinct Australian samples ( N = 294; 165) completed online surveys regarding demographics, anger-related beliefs, self-regulatory ability, anti-social traits, and anger-related tendencies. Analyses were then implemented to test the internal and external validity of the measure. Specifically, principal components analysis and a subsequent confirmatory factor analysis revealed that five prominent beliefs emerged: positive beliefs about the utility of rumination and anger, negative beliefs about the controllability of rumination and anger, and antisocial beliefs about anger expression. Reliability tests showed that the subscales all demonstrated a sound internal consistency (α = 0.72 to 0.85). Bivariate correlations revealed evidence for concurrent validity, as the BDAQ subscales were positively associated with existing measures of metacognitive beliefs, self-regulatory dysfunction, anti-social traits, anger rumination, trait driver anger, and driver aggression. Finally, path analysis was used to test the predictive utility of the BDAQ and the associated theory behind the measure. The results showed that the BDAQ subscales both uniquely and indirectly influenced and explained sizeable portions of the variance in anger rumination (54.3%), driver anger (49.6%), and driver aggression (38.7%). Overall, the BDAQ appears to be a valid self-report measure of anger-related beliefs and is associated with psychological phenomena that underlie aggressive driving behaviour. The measure can therefore be used to better understand driver anger and how to intervene on the potentially dangerous behaviours that follow.

Driving anger scale validation: Relationship of driving anger with the aberrant driving behaviour of truck drivers

Abstract:<p>Truck-related accidents in China have substantially increased. Truck driver safety issues have elicited considerable attention from transportation safety researchers. Driving anger is one of the most important factors that influence driving behaviour. However, little knowledge about the driving anger of truck drivers was available in the relevant literature. This study aimed to (1) provide empirical data about the driving anger of truck drivers, (2) examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the driving anger scale (DAS) with a sample of truck drivers and (3) explore how the driving anger of truck drivers predicts their aberrant driving behaviour. The three-part survey data from 475 randomly selected truck drivers were collected in this study. The self-reported aberrant driving behaviour that was measured with the driving behaviour questionnaire was predicted by the drivers' DAS ratings. One-factor structure and three-factor structure of the DAS were tested for Chinese truck drivers. Results indicated that the one-factor structure of the six-item DAS was more suitable for truck drivers than the three-factor structure. The factor structure of the DAS for Chinese truck drivers was consistent with the structure of the original version by Deffenbacher, Oetting, and Lynch (1994). The internal consistency, convergent validity and criterion-related validity of the six-item DAS were acceptable. Driving anger amongst truck drivers can be used to predict their aberrant driving behaviour. This study identified several practical implications to reduce the driving anger of truck drivers and consequently improve their driving behaviour.</p>
