Abstract:Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) tracking has been widely used in inspection, rescue, follow-up and many other fields. Compared to ground targets, aerial targets are smaller, more flexible and possess more freedom of motion, which makes the task more challenging. In this paper, we propose a vision-based UAV tracker aiming at aerial targets. Firstly, a lightweight detection model is deployed for target detection and target’s position is estimated taking advantage of detection box information and camera internal parameters. Then, a flexible motion prediction method is proposed followed by an efficient and occlusion-aware front-end path searching approach. Finally, an optimization-based multicopter trajectory planning framework is employed to generate a spatio-temporal optimal trajectory. The experimental results indicate that our tracker achieves great robustness and security in both vertical and horizontal tracking.

Abstract:This paper proposes an online predictive control method for fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with a pan-tilt camera in target tracking. It aims to achieve long-term tracking while concurrently maintaining the target near the image center. Particularly, this work takes the UAV and pan-tilt camera as an overall system and deals with the target tracking problem via joint optimization, so that the tracking ability of the UAV can be improved. The image captured by the pan-tilt camera is the unique input associated with the target, and model predictive control (MPC) is used to solve the optimization problem with constraints that cannot be performed by the classic image-based visual servoing (IBVS). In addition to the dynamic constraint of the UAV, the perception constraint of the camera is also taken into consideration, which is described by the maximum distance between the target and the camera. The accurate detection of the target depends on the amount of its feature information contained in the image, which is highly related to the relative distance between the target and the camera. Moreover, considering the real-time requirements of practical applications, an MPC strategy based on soft constraints and a warm start is presented. Furthermore, a switching-based approach is proposed to return the target back to the perception range quickly once it exceeds the range, and the exponential asymptotic stability of the switched controller is proven as well. Both numerical and hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method compared with the existing method.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. An adaptive image-based visual servoing (IBVS) controller is designed for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to achieve robust tracking for moving targets, under underactuation and tight coupling constraints of UAV kinematics. Specifically, image features are selected from perspective image moments of a planar target to obtain virtual feature dynamics regarding UAV kinematics and dynamics. By constructing an auxiliary variable, a translational velocity observer for moving target is constructed by using virtual image features. An IBVS tracking controller is designed without target geometric information by combining UAV and visual feature dynamics. Designed controller and observer make the UAV robustly reach desired height and track the moving target, despite uncertainty of target movement. The controller has asymptotical convergence performance, and the target velocity is observed according to Lyapunov stability analysis. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method has smoother and more accurate performance in motion tracking and target velocity prediction under system uncertainty.

Abstract:In this work, aiming at the trajectory tracking control of the quadrotor UAV subject to external disturbances and model uncertainties, a finite-time approach with preassigned performance guaranteed is proposed. First, the control system is decoupled into translational and rotational subsystems. Then, in both two subsystems, the performance bounds constructed by the newly established appointed-time performance functions are devised for guaranteeing the tracking performance, and the controllers are designed via applying the dynamic surface control technique with integral barrier Lyapunov functions involved. Moreover, finite-time tracking differentiators and finite-time multivariable disturbance observers are exploited to estimate the target signals and the lumped disturbances, respectively. Finally, two examples of simulation are carried out to validate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control method.

Abstract:This paper proposes an event-triggered finite-time adaptive fuzzy tracking control for the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) subjected to time-varying output constraints and external disturbances. The challenge of the event-triggered control design is how to make the output of a quadrotor UAV not exceed the prescribed time-varying constraints and achieve finite-time tracking. By redefining the nonlinear terms and control inputs, the quadrotor UAV system is transformed into multiple input multiple output (MIMO) nonlinear system with pure-feedback structure to facilitate the tracking controller design of position and attitude. To deal with time-varying output constraint, the tangent barrier Lyapunov functions (TBLFs) are introduced in the adaptive finite-time controller design process. To save the computation, resources, and transmission load, the event-triggered mechanisms are applied to control inputs, and the closed-loop stability of quadrotor UAV system can be proved. Finally, the simulation results are given to indicate the validity of the presented control strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-level visual servo strategy is elaborately devised for an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) equipped with a pan-tilt camera, so as to exactly track the desired trajectory around a visual target without direct position measurements. In the lower level, a barrier function-based adaptive pseudo-inverse (BFAP) controller is specially designed for the camera to keep the target in sight. Together with a finite-time position observer (FPO) and a finite-time extended state observer (FESO), a model-free finite-time trajectory-tracking control (MFTC) scheme is naturally synthesized for the USV on the higher level. Prominent advantages are presented as follows: 1) The BFAP controller can not only circumvent the singularity issue in a simpler manner, but also solve the field-of-view problem thoroughly in spite of unknown image depth; 2) The FPO provides a new vision-based method to locate the USV by rapidly calibrating a constant extrinsic parameter of the camera online, achieving higher positioning accuracy; and 3) The MFTC scheme allows all model information of the USV to be unknown, which is more favorable to practical implementations. Stability analyses are strictly made by the Lyapunov theory, and simulation studies conducted on the prototype CyberShip II comprehensively demonstrate remarkable performance of the proposed BFAP controller and MFTC scheme.

Abstract:This paper addresses the state-constrained control of the symmetric underactuated unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) under unknown dynamics and time-varying interference based on improved Lyapunov function. Inspired by the prescribed performance control (PPC), the improved logarithmic barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) is proposed with a reasonably defined performance function in advance. The tracking errors of position and yaw direction are constrained within the set range. Meanwhile, the symmetric barrier Lyapunov function (SBLF) and dynamic surface control (DSC) are introduced to simplify the controller design and indirectly restrict the yaw velocity. On this basis, the finite-time disturbance observer (FDO) is proposed to estimate the unknown disturbance. The finite-time auxiliary dynamic system is introduced to deal with the input saturation. In addition, the neural network minimum learning parameter (MLP) can reduce the computational complexity while figuring out the unknown dynamics. Finally, numerical simulation verifies the effectiveness of the control system.

Abstract:In this paper, the optimal attitude control problem is investigated for quadrotor UAV with time-varying control effectiveness faults based on adaptive dynamic programming. Initially, a novel nonlinear conversion function is introduced to achieve the finite-time prescribed performance on tracking errors of three attitude angles of the quadrotor UAV. Furthermore, given that the controller may experience a degree of time-varying faults due to internal component aging or external environmental influences, an improved value function with a discount factor is proposed to resist the aforementioned time-varying control effectiveness faults. Then, by integrating the concurrent learning technique into adaptive dynamic programming algorithm, a valid approximate optimal control protocol is presented. Such an algorithm not only effectively improves the utilization of historical data in the history stack but also loosens the strict persistent excitation condition into a rank condition that is easy to check online. Moreover, it can be proved that the uniformly ultimately bounded stability of the attitude system is ensured even in the presence of time-varying control effectiveness faults. Meanwhile, tracking errors of attitude angles successfully converge to pre-defined symmetric or asymmetric precision intervals with an adjustable convergence rate in a user-defined finite time. Finally, a simulation example of the quadrotor UAV attitude system is given to verify the validity of the developed control scheme.

Abstract:This paper studies the trajectory tracking control problem for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under unknown disturbances and model uncertainties. A priori information about disturbances is required for most existing prescribed time-extended state observer (PTESO) methods. For unknown disturbances, a barrier function-based adaptive prescribed-time extended state observer (BFAPTESO) is designed by utilizing the time-domain transformation and adaptive mechanism in the prescribed time and using the barrier function method in the rest time. To improve tracking performance amidst model uncertainty, a finite-gain prescribed-time state observer (FGPTSO) is applied in the position loops. Then, the novel prescribed-time controllers are designed in conjunction with the above observers in the attitude and position loops. The proposed control scheme mitigates unknown dynamic disturbances and model uncertainties, guaranteeing that the tracking error achieves and sustains the preset accuracy within the prescribed time. Finally, numerical results indicate that the proposed control method is effective and robust.

Abstract:In this paper, a composite finite-time prescribed performance tracking control scheme is presented for an unmanned helicopter (UH) system subject to performance constraints, model uncertainties and external perturbations. A new finite-time neural network disturbance observer (FTNNDO) with adaptive laws is designed to deal with the external disturbances and model uncertainties, which not only accelerate the convergence rate in finite time but also eliminate the complicated differential calculation in the traditional backstepping scheme. Using the continuous adaptive law, the neural network (NN) approximate errors can be effectively estimated and compensated online without the chattering and gain overestimation caused by traditional methods, thus further enhancing the robustness of the system. To constrain the tracking performance of the transient process and steady-state accuracy, a novel prescribed performance function is designed to preset the tracking errors within prescribed boundaries. Based on the FTNNDO and barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), an improved finite-time tracking controller is designed to achieve fast convergence with prescribed performance. By using Lyapunov synthesis, it is strictly proven that the finite-time convergence of the closed-loop control system can be achieved and tracking errors are always within the prescribed performance bounds. In the end, simulation results for the UH tracking control system are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of developed control scheme.

Abstract:As for time-varying tracking control problems, many neural-dynamics-based control methods have been proposed because of their high efficiency. The varying-parameter convergent neural dynamics design method with the characteristic of super-exponential convergence has been applied to design controllers for unmanned aerial vehicles. Although the varying-parameter convergent neural dynamics controller has a fast convergence speed, it still needs long enough time to achieve tracking theoretically. By combining the finite-time activation function with the varying-parameter convergent neural dynamics design method, a finite-time-gain-adjustment design method is proposed and proved theoretically in this paper. This controller can make state variables of the system converge to their time-varying targets in finite time. Compared with some traditional methods, contrastive experiments and application to a multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle system illustrate that the proposed controller has finite convergence time, better anti-noise performance, and faster convergence speed, which enable the multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles to track time-varying targets more quickly and accurately, so as to achieve more complex and efficient control tasks.

Abstract:Considering the problem of trajectory tracking control for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle, the command filter-based finite-time adaptive optimal control strategy is proposed. By utilizing a finite-time command filter to rapidly approximate the derivative of virtual control signal and designing fractional power error compensating signal, the problem of “explosion of complexity” and the effect of filtered error are removed simultaneously. Furthermore, the adaptive dynamic programming technique is used to construct a critic-actor network, which enables the optimization of the compensated tracking errors and control signals. The proposed finite-time optimal control scheme ensures the minimization of the performance index function and guarantees the finite-time boundedness of all signals in closed-loop system, and the position and attitude tracking errors are driven into a sufficiently small neighborhood of the origin in a finite time. Finally, the validity and superiority of the presented finite-time adaptive optimal control algorithm are verified by a simulation example.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to track and hover above an uncooperative target, such as an unvisited area or an object that is newly discovered. A vision-based strategy integrating the metrology and the control is employed to achieve target tracking and hovering observation. First, by introducing a virtual camera frame, the reprojected image features can change independently of the rotational motion of the vehicle. The image centroid and an optimal observation area on the virtual image plane are exploited to regulate the relative horizontal and vertical distance. Then, the optic flow and gyro measurements are utilized to estimate the relative UAV-to-target velocity. Further, a gain-switching proportional-derivative (PD) control scheme is proposed to compensate for the external interference and model uncertainties. The closed-loop system is proven to be exponentially stable, based on the Lyapunov method. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed vision-based strategy in both hovering and tracking scenarios.
Adaptive fuzzy time-varying sliding mode control for quadrotor UAV attitude system with prescribed performance

Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive fuzzy time-varying sliding mode control scheme for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attitude system with prescribed performance. A performance function is used and an error transformation is provided to transform the original constrained nonlinear system into an equivalent unconstrained one. Fuzzy systems are used to approximate unknown nonlinear functions of the attitude system. To eliminate the reaching phase which can make the control is robust with respect to external disturbances and parameter uncertainties from the very beginning, a time-varying fast terminal sliding mode surface is designed by the transformed error and a tracking differentiator. Then by using the sliding mode surface, the controller is developed. The proposed scheme guarantees that all the signals in the resulting closed-loop system are bounded and that the tracking errors converge to a small residual set with the prescribed performance bounds in finite time. Simulation results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">This paper proposes a new control method for the ground moving target tracking problem by a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a monocular pan-tilt camera. By utilizing the image-based visual servoing, the control law can be directly designed in the image plane, thereby avoiding errors caused by the 3D position calculation. Based on that, we design a control framework to integrate the control of the UAV and the pan-tilt, which enables the UAV to track the target while maintaining the feature point near the image center. Furthermore, considering that the low-cost pan-tilt camera we use has restricted characteristics, we present a deterministic finite automata model to transit the states of tracking when the pan-tilt attitude reaches saturation, thereby improving the tracking ability of the UAV for the moving target. The stability proof of the controller is given, and extensive experiments of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation and real flights are provided. The results show that the proposed method can achieve continuous robust tracking of the ground moving target.</p>

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. In order to eliminate the dependence of finite-time control on the initial state of the system in the image-based visual servoing (IBVS) of a quadrotor UAV (QUAV) for the moving target, we propose a control scheme for the moving target of a QUAV based on fixed-time stability. We select the image moments of the virtual camera plane as features and establish an image moment dynamics model that includes target motion parameters based on them. Then, we use the backstepping method to design the fixed-time controller for the system. The design steps of the controller mainly consist of two parts. Firstly, we designed a fixed-time stable linear velocity observer to address the unmeasurable linear velocity and unmeasurable monocular camera depth issues of QUAV. Then, using a high-order tracking differentiator to estimate the target linear velocity as a feedforward, combined with the fixed-time linear velocity observer estimated QUAV linear velocity, we designed a fixed-time controller for the system using the backstepping method. We demonstrated the fixed-time stability of the controller using the Lyapunov theory. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by numerical simulation. At the same time, the comparative simulation shows that the method can guarantee the rate of convergence of the system and has high control accuracy.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of prescribed performance tracking control for strict-feedback systems with parametric uncertainties and unmatched disturbances. An adaptive command-filtered control approach with performance guarantees is put forward to address the problem. By means of a new-type self-adjustable performance function and a barrier function, it is capable of achieving the practical prescribed time tracking and enhancing the reliability of control implementation simultaneously, without yet the requirement for the specific initial condition. In the control design, a class of finite-time command filters is adopted to solve the “explosion of complexity” problem, and the error compensation mechanism with practical finite-time stability is introduced to remove the impact of filtered errors. Moreover, considering that the overshoot of the tracking error fails to be quantified by the majority of performance functions with infinite initial values, a pair of asymmetric performance functions is constructed such that the trajectory tracking with the predefined overshoot, settling time, and accuracy is achieved, while preserving the capability of relaxing the initial condition. It turns out that the proposed approach warrants the performance-related constraint satisfaction and the boundedness of all the closed-loop signals. Three simulation studies are carried out to demonstrate the theoretical findings. Note to Practitioners—This paper is motivated by the potential fragility problem exhibited in the traditional constraint-handling methods in the presence of paroxysmal factors such as suddenly strong disturbances or highly fluctuating target trajectories. For practical applications (e.g., satellite docking, automobile production, target interception, and network congestion control) suffering from the above scenario, it might be favorable to widen prescribed performance boundaries in a proactive way from the perspective of the safe and reliable operation of the controlled system. On this basis, a novel command filter-based adaptive tracking control solution with self-adjustable performance guarantees is proposed. It not only achieves trajectory tracking with the preassigned overshoot, settling time, and accuracy in the context of raising the reliability of control implementation but also possesses the attributes of inexpensive computation burden and easy acceptability in practical applications.

Abstract:Target tracking is a typical and challenging scenario that is required to be executed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in operational environments. This work investigates the noncooperative target tracking control problem for UAVs. An integrated model is constructed by combining the dynamics of both the line-of-sight variables and the acceleration components. Particularly, the dynamics of the acceleration components, that contain unmeasurable states, characterize the relative motion between the noncooperative target and the UAV. To estimate these states, a globally convergent observer is developed by utilizing the noncertainty-equivalent (NCE) structure. With the integrated model and the NCE observer, an outputfeedback target tracking control scheme is proposed using the dynamic surface control technique and the prescribed performance control method. Based on the Lyapunov approach, the relative spatial positions of the target and the UAV are proved to always stay within a specified operation region and ultimately converge to a small terminal region. Finally, simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed target tracking control scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, a finite-time trajectory tracking control scheme is established for the quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) under the co-existence of modeling uncertainty, external disturbance and input constraint. Firstly, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based auxiliary part is established estimate and compensate the model uncertainty and external disturbance. Then, design the sliding surface with tracking error for the backstepping control procedure and use Lyapunov stability theory to solve the optimal control law. Besides, the control law has a hyperbolic tangent function form which can helps to handle the input constraint problem. Finally, validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme through simulations.

Abstract:In this article, a novel prescribed performance adaptive fixed-time backstepping control strategy is investigated for the attitude tracking of a 3-DOF helicopter. First, a new unified barrier function (UBF) is designed to convert the prescribed performance constrained system into an unconstrained one. Then, a fixed-time (FxT) backstepping control framework is established to achieve the attitude tracking. By virtual of a newly proposed inequality, a non-singular virtual control law is constructed. In addition, a FxT differentiator with a compensation mechanism is employed to overcome the matter of "explosion of complexity". Moreover, a modified adaptive law is developed to approximate the upper bound of the disturbances. To obtain a less conservative and more accurate approximation of the settling time, an improved FxT stability theorem is proposed. Based on this theorem, it is proved that all signals of the system are FxT bounded, and the tracking error converges to a preset domain with small overshoot in a user-defined time. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the presented control strategy are confirmed by numerical simulations.
